This study aimed to investigate the long-term serum metal ion levels of patients who received metal-on-metal hip resurfacing arthroplasty (MoM HRA). We conducted a retrospective study of 99 patients (110 hips) from March 2006 to May 2017 who underwent MoM HRA. The Harris Hip Score (HHS) and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) activity score were measured, and the patients underwent clinical and radiological management. Serum levels of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), and molybdenum (Mo) were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at 1, 6, and 12 months, and each year follow-up after prosthesis implantation. Patients were followed up from 1 to 156 months, with a mean of 98 months. No complications occurred. Metal ion analysis revealed significantly elevated levels compared to preoperative levels. The metal ions levels increased and reached a peak after surgery, and then the levels began to decline gradually. Approximately 84-108 months after surgery, the metal ion levels increased again to approximately peak levels. Then, up to 156 months after surgery, the metal ions levels will drop approximately to preoperative levels. The serum levels of Cr in women were higher than those in men, with the difference being statistically significant. Patients with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥24.9 kg/m2 Co levels were significantly higher than those of normal-weight patients. The serum levels of metal ions showed no significant differences between the prostheses. The use of the MoM HRA was clinically effective, and the Co, Cr, and Mo levels increased significantly after HRA; however, upon long-term follow-up, serum metal ion levels tended to decrease to preoperative levels. Longer follow-up periods and larger study samples are needed to establish the long-term outcome of patients undergoing HRA with MoM bearings. Level IV, Therapeutic Study.

Background: Fatty liver in dairy cows is a common metabolic disease defined by triglyceride (TG) buildup in the hepatocyte. Clinical diagnosis of fatty liver is usually done by liver biopsy, causing considerable economic losses in the dairy industry owing to the lack of more effective diagnostic methods. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential utility of blood biomarkers for the diagnosis and early warning of fatty liver in dairy cows., Results: A total of twenty-four lactating cows within 28 days after parturition were randomly selected as experimental animals and divided into healthy cows (liver biopsy tested, n = 12) and cows with fatty liver (liver biopsy tested, n = 12). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the macroelements and microelements in the serum of two groups of cows. Compared to healthy cows (C), concentrations of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), strontium (Sr), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), boron (B) and molybdenum (Mo) were lower and copper (Cu) was higher in fatty liver cows (F). Meanwhile, the observed differences in macroelements and microelements were related to delivery time, with the greatest major disparity between C and F occurring 7 days after delivery. Multivariable analysis was used to test the correlation between nine serum macroelements, microelements and fatty liver. Based on variable importance projection and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, minerals Ca, Se, K, B and Mo were screened as the best diagnostic indicators of fatty liver in postpartum cows., Conclusions: Our data suggested that serum levels of Ca, K, Mg, Se, B, Mo, Mn, and Sr were lower in F than in C. The most suitable period for an early-warning identification of fatty liver in cows was 7 days after delivery, and Ca, Se, K, B and Mo were the best diagnostic indicators of fatty liver in postpartum cows., (© 2024. Background: Growing evidence suggests that cardiovascular disease develops over the lifetime, often beginning in childhood. Metal exposures have been associated with cardiovascular disease and important risk factors, including dyslipidemia, but prior studies have largely focused on adult populations and single metal exposures., Objective: To investigate the individual and joint impacts of multiple metal exposures on lipid levels during childhood., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 291 4-year-old children from the Rhea Cohort Study in Heraklion, Greece. Seven metals (manganese, cobalt, selenium, molybdenum, cadmium, mercury, and lead) were measured in whole blood using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Serum lipid levels included total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. To determine the joint and individual impacts of child metal exposures (log 2 -transformed) on lipid levels, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was employed as the primary multi-pollutant approach. Potential effect modification by child sex and childhood environmental tobacco smoke exposure was also evaluated., Results: BKMR identified a positive association between the metal mixture and both total and LDL cholesterol. Of the seven metals examined, selenium (median 90.6 [IQR = 83.6, 96.5] µg/L) was assigned the highest posterior inclusion probability for both total and LDL cholesterol. A difference in LDL cholesterol of 8.22 mg/dL (95% CI = 1.85, 14.59) was observed when blood selenium was set to its 75th versus 25th percentile, holding all other metals at their median values. In stratified analyses, the positive association between selenium and LDL cholesterol was only observed among boys or among children exposed to environmental tobacco smoke during childhood., Impact Statement: Growing evidence indicates that cardiovascular events in adulthood are the consequence of the lifelong atherosclerotic process that begins in childhood. Therefore, public health interventions targeting childhood cardiovascular risk factors may have a particularly profound impact on reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease. Although growing evidence supports that both essential and nonessential metals contribute to cardiovascular disease and risk factors, such as dyslipidemia, prior studies have mainly focused on single metal exposures in adult populations. Objective: To describe the copper and selenium statuses of beef calves at weaning., Animal: Calves ( n = 1998) were sampled from 106 Canadian cow-calf herds in the fall of 2021., Procedure: Serum samples from calves were tested for copper, selenium, and molybdenum concentrations., Results: Although the percentages of calves classified as selenium deficient (< 0.025 ppm) were relatively low (0.5% western Canada, 3% eastern Canada), 53% of calves from western Canada and 77% of calves from eastern Canada were classified as having less than adequate selenium concentrations (< 0.08 ppm). Copper deficiency (< 0.5 ppm) was common in calves from both western (17%) and eastern (14%) Canada. High molybdenum concentrations (> 0.10 ppm) were identified in 6% of calves from western Canada and 7% of calves from eastern Canada., Conclusion: Selenium concentrations were higher in calves from western Canada than from those in eastern Canada ( P < 0.001). Copper and molybdenum concentrations were not significantly different between western and eastern Canada. Less-than-adequate serum copper was the most common deficiency identified in Canadian beef calves at weaning., Clinical Relevance: Trace minerals are important for immune system function in calves at weaning. Selenium concentrations in calves at weaning were lower than in cows from the same herds collected at pregnancy testing 2 y earlier. Copper deficiency was also identified, though less frequently than for mature cows. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients have late presentation at the time of diagnosis and a poor prognosis. Metal dyshomeostasis is known to play a role in cancer progression. However, the blood and tissue metallome of PDAC patients has not been assessed. This study aimed to determine the levels of essential and toxic metals in the serum and pancreatic tissue from PDAC patients. Serum samples were obtained from PDAC patients before surgical resection. Tissue (tumor and adjacent normal pancreas) were obtained from the surgically resected specimen. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis was performed to quantify the levels of 10 essential and 3 toxic metals in these samples. Statistical analysis was performed to identify dysregulated metals in PDAC and their role as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. Significantly decreased serum levels of magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, arsenic, and mercury and increased levels of molybdenum were shown to be associated with PDAC. There were significantly decreased levels of zinc, manganese and molybdenum, and increased levels of calcium and selenium in the pancreatic tumor tissue compared with the adjacent normal pancreas. Notably, lower serum levels of calcium, iron, and selenium, and higher levels of manganese, were significantly associated with a poor prognosis (i.e., overall survival) in PDAC patients. In conclusion, this is the first study to comprehensively assess the serum and tissue metallome of PDAC patients. Molybdenum has been found to be associated with metabolic disorders. However, the relationship between molybdenum and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is still unclear. A large case-control study was conducted in a Chinese population from the baseline of Ezhou-Shenzhen cohort. A total of 5356 subjects were included with 2678 MetS and 2678 controls matched by sex and age (±2 years). Medians (IQRs) of plasma molybdenum concentrations were 1.24 μg/L for MetS cases and 1.46 μg/L for controls. After adjustment for multiple covariates, the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MetS were 1.00 (reference), 0.71 (0.59-0.84), 0.56 (0.46-0.68), and 0.47 (0.39-0.58) across quartiles of plasma molybdenum, and per SD increment of log-transformed molybdenum was associated with a 23% lower risk of MetS. In the spline analysis, the risk of MetS and its components decreased steeply with increasing molybdenum and followed by a plateau when the cutoff point was observed around 2.0 μg/L. The dose-dependent relationship of molybdenum with MetS remained consistent when considering other essential elements in the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model. In our study, higher plasma molybdenum was significantly associated with a lower risk of MetS, as well as its components, in a dose-response manner.

Many nanoscale biomaterials fail to reach the clinical trial stage due to a poor understanding of the fundamental principles of their in vivo behaviour. Here we describe the transport, transformation and bioavailability of MoS 2 nanomaterials through a combination of in vivo experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. We show that after intravenous injection molybdenum is significantly enriched in liver sinusoid and splenic red pulp. This biodistribution is mediated by protein coronas that spontaneously form in the blood, principally with apolipoprotein E. The biotransformation of MoS 2 leads to incorporation of molybdenum into molybdenum enzymes, which increases their specific activities in the liver, affecting its metabolism. Our findings reveal that nanomaterials undergo a protein corona-bridged transport-transformation-bioavailability chain in vivo, and suggest that nanomaterials consisting of essential trace elements may be converted into active biological molecules that organisms can exploit. Our results also indicate that the long-term biotransformation of nanomaterials may have an impact on liver metabolism.

Background Inorganic phosphate in blood is currently determined by the reaction with molybdate. This report aims at reviewing conditions underlying spuriously altered levels of circulating inorganic phosphate. Content A systematic search of the Excerpta Medica, the National Library Database and the Web of Science database was conducted without language restriction from the earliest publication date available through January 31, 2020. Summary For the analysis, 80 reports published in English (n = 77), French (n = 1), German (n = 1) and Spanish (n = 1) were retained. Well-documented pseudohyperphosphatemia was observed in individuals exposed to liposomal amphotericin, in patients affected by a gammopathy, in patients with hyperlipidemia and in patients with hyperbilirubinemia. An unexplained elevated inorganic phosphate level sometimes provided a clue to the diagnosis of a gammopathy. Well-documented cases of pseudohypophosphatemia were observed in patients on large amounts of intravenous mannitol. Finally, pseudohypophosphatemia was occasionally observed on treatment with liposomal amphotericin and in patients with a gammopathy. Outlook In order to avoid unnecessary testing and treatment, the phenomenon of spuriously altered inorganic phosphate should be recognized. An unexplained hyperphosphatemia may provide a clue to the diagnosis of a gammopathy or a severe hyperlipidemia.

Background: The aim of the present study was to determine changes occurring in the erythrocyte concentrations of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) in male subjects with different training levels living in the same region (Spain)., Methods: Thirty sedentary subjects (24.34 ± 3.02 years) formed the control group (CG); 24 moderately trained (4-7 h/week) subjects (23.53 ± 1.85 years) formed the group with a moderate degree of training (MTG) and 22 professional cyclists (23.29 ± 2.73 years), who performed more than 20 h/week of training, formed the high-level training group (HTG). Erythrocyte samples were collected from all subjects in fasting conditions, washed and frozen at - 80 °C until analysis. Erythrocyte analysis of trace elements was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)., Results: The results showed that there was a statistically significant lower erythrocyte concentration of Cu, Mn, Mo and Zn in the MTG and HTG than CG. Se was only significantly lower in HTG than CG. The correlation analysis indicates that this change was correlated with training in the case of Cu, Mn, Se and Zn. All results are expressed in μg/g Hb., Conclusions: We can conclude that physical training produces a decrease in erythrocyte concentrations of Cu, Mn, Se and Zn, which can cause a decrement in athletes' performance given the importance of these elements. For this reason, erythrocyte monitoring during the season would seem to be advisable to avoid negative effects on performance.

Few studies specifically address the possible associations between multiple-metal exposures and liver damage among the occupational population. This study aimed to explore the cross-sectional relationships of plasma metals with liver function parameters. For 571 on-the-spot workers in the manganese-exposed workers healthy cohort (MEWHC), we determined liver function parameters: total bilirubin (TBILI), direct bilirubin (DBILI), indirect bilirubin (IBILI), alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST). Total concentrations of 22 plasma metals were measured by ICP-MS. The LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) penalized regression model was applied for selecting plasma metals independently associated with liver function parameters. Multiple linear regression analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were utilized for identifying the exposure-response relationship of plasma metals with liver function parameters. After adjusting for covariates and selected metals, a 1-SD increase in log-10 transformed levels of iron was associated with increases in the levels of TBILI, DBILI and IBILI by 20.3%, 12.1% and 23.7%, respectively; similar increases in molybdenum for decreases in levels of TBILI, DBILI and IBILI by 6.1%, 2.6% and 8.3%, respectively. The effect of a 1-SD increase in plasma copper corresponded decreases of 3.2%, 3.4% and 5.0% in TBILI, AST and ALT levels, respectively. The spline analyses further clarified the non-linear relationships between plasma iron and bilirubin whilst negative linear relationships for plasma molybdenum and bilirubin. Plasma iron was positively whilst plasma molybdenum was negatively associated with increased serum bilirubin levels. Huntington' disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive motor, psychiatric, and cognitive deterioration. HD is, together with spinocerebellar ataxias, spinobulbar muscular atrophy and dentatorubral-pallido- luysian atrophy, one of the nine disorders caused by an expansion of glutamine residues in the causative protein where the polyglutamine expansion cause aberrant protein folding. Since an excessive metal's accumulation in organs may induce protein misfolding and oxidative stress, we have studied the blood concentration of essential (Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, Zn) and nonessential (As, Cd, Sb, Sn, V) trace elements in HD patients. We found increased levels of the essential elements iron, chromium, selenium and zinc and of the nonessential element arsenic in the blood of HD patients. Since alteration in metals homeostasis may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease and could eventually constitute a target for therapy, we may suggest the utilize of the blood metal profile as a further in vivo tool to study and characterize Huntington disease., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier GmbH. Context: Studies suggest many essential trace metal(loid)s are involved in glucose metabolism, but the associations among pregnant women are unclear., Objective: To assess associations between early pregnancy plasma zinc, selenium, copper, and molybdenum levels and blood glucose levels later in the second trimester., Design: The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Fetal Growth Studies‒Singleton Cohort is a prospective cohort study conducted between July 2009 and January 2013., Setting: Twelve academic research hospitals in the United States., Patients: A total of 1857 multiracial, nonobese, healthy women., Main Outcome Measure: Blood glucose levels from 1-hour 50-g gestational load test (GLT) at 24 to 28 weeks of gestation., Results: Higher concentrations of first-trimester copper were associated with higher glucose levels from the GLT (i.e., every 50% increase in copper concentration was related to 4.9 mg/dL higher glucose level; 95% CI: 2.2, 7.5 mg/dL) adjusted for maternal sociodemographic characteristics and reproductive history. In contrast, every 50% increase in molybdenum concentration was associated with 1.2 mg/dL lower mean glucose level (95% CI: -2.3, -0.1 mg/dL). The magnitude of these associations was greater at the upper tails of glucose level distribution based on quantile regressions of the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles., Conclusions: Higher copper and lower molybdenum concentrations could increase the risk of glucose dysregulation during pregnancy, with women at higher risk of gestational diabetes mellitus potentially affected to a greater extent. Objectives: Although environmental exposure to multiple metals is common, epidemiological studies on the associations of exposure to 23 metals with kidney function have not been analyzed. We aimed to investigate the associations of 23 metals levels with renal function., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in four rural regions of Hunan province. Plasma and urine metals levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Two-level logistic regression was used to investigate the associations of metals levels with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with adjustment for confounding factors. We conducted a sensitivity analysis of the results using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation., Results: A total of 3553 participants completed the investigation. Five metals (plasma arsenic and molybdenum; urine copper, rubidium, and strontium) were identified to be significantly associated with renal function. Participants in the highest quartile of plasma arsenic and molybdenum were at 17.95 (95% CI: 6.35-50.76) and 24.23 (95% CI: 7.42-79.19) fold risk of abnormal eGFR, respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. The highest quartiles of urine copper, rubidium, and strontium were associated with 3.70 (95% CI:1.92-7.14), 0.16 (95% CI:0.07-0.37) and 0.08 (95% CI: 0.03-0.21) fold risk of abnormal eGFR. The sensitivity analysis revealed that plasma arsenic, molybdenum and urine copper, rubidium and strontium levels retained similar associations with abnormal eGFR., Conclusion: Plasma arsenic and molybdenum, and urine copper are risk factors for abnormal renal function, while urine rubidium and strontium are protective factors for renal function., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. In an OECD Test Guideline 416 multigenerational study, groups of 24 male and 24 female Sprague-Dawley rats were administered sodium molybdate dihydrate at 0, 5, 17, or 40 mg molybdenum (Mo)/kg bw/day in the drinking water or 40 mg Mo/kg bw/day in the diet over two generations to assess reproductive toxicity. No adverse effect on reproductive function was observed at any dose level in either generation as indicated by no significant dose-related effect on estrus cycles, sperm parameters, mating, fertility, gestation, litter size, pup survival, growth or postnatal development. Systemic toxicity, including decreased body weight, food consumption (males only) and water consumption, was observed among both sexes given 40 mg Mo/kg bw/day in the diet. Serum levels of Mo and copper were increased in a dose-related manner. The aim of the present study was to determine changes occurring in serum and urine concentrations of essential trace elements with proven essentiality (molybdenum, selenium, and zinc) as a result of performing an acute physical activity until exhaustion in middle- and long-distance runners who live in the same area of Extremadura (Spain). Twenty-one Spanish national middle- and long-distance runners and 26 sedentary students of a similar age were recruited for the study. Both groups ran on a treadmill until exhaustion, starting at a speed of 10 and 8 km/h, respectively, and increasing the speed at 1 km/h every 400 m, without modifying the slope, always within the recommended parameters. Serum and urine samples were obtained from all subjects before and after the tests. Analysis of trace metals was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Resting serum and urinary concentrations between groups were compared using the Student t test, and the Wilcoxon test was used to analyze the trends of changes before and after the effort. The results showed that molybdenum concentrations were significantly higher in athletes than in controls (p < 0.01). Selenium (p < 0.05) and zinc (p < 0.01) concentrations were significantly lower in athletes than in controls. When we compared the serum concentrations before and after the test in the controls, only in the case of selenium (p = 0.006), a significant increase was observed after the test. However, this signification disappears with the corrections for hematocrit. Athletes' serum concentrations of Se (p = 0.004) and Zn (p = 0.005) lowered at the end of the test. Also, the results showed that there were no statistical urinary concentration (expressed in μg/g creatinine) changes in Mo and Se. Zn urinary concentration increased at the end of exercise (p = 0.018), since an incremental exercise to exhaustion in middle- and long-distance elite athletes produces a decrease in Se and Zn serum concentrations but Zn urinary concentration increased. In conclusion, athletes show higher serum concentrations of molybdenum and lower serum concentrations of selenium and zinc than sedentary subjects. Additionally, a treadmill test until exhaustion provokes a decrease in serum concentration of selenium and zinc and a higher excretion of urinary zinc. Serum concentrations of Se and Zn should be carried out in order to avoid any possible deficit cases and to establish the optimal supplementation.

Routine administration of trace elements is recognised as a standard of care in children requiring parenteral nutrition. However, there is a lack of global consensus regarding trace elements provision and dosing in pediatric parenteral nutrition. This review provides an overview of available evidence regarding trace elements supply and posology in parenteral nutrition in neonates and children. Trace elements provision in children should be tailored to the weight and clinical condition of the child with emphasis on those at risk of toxicity or deficiency. Based on current evidence, there is a need to review the formulation of commercial solutions that contain multiple-trace elements and to enable individual trace elements additives to be available for specific indications. Literature supports the removal of chromium provision whereas manganese and molybdenum supplementation are debated. Preterm neonates may have higher parenteral requirements in iodine, selenium and copper than previously recommended. There is growing support for the routine provision of iron in long-term parenteral nutrition. Further studies on trace elements contamination of parenteral nutrition solutions are needed for a range of trace elements.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection can interfere with the absorption of most elements, and the variations of some element levels are related to the incidence of gastric cancer. However, there have been conflicting results concerning the influence of H. pylori infection on serum element levels. The present study aimed to compare the serum element concentrations of H. pylori-infected local residents with uninfected residents from Lujiang County with high gastric cancer risk in Eastern China. We used data and serum samples from the H. pylori screening-survey program which was a cross-sectional study. We took 155 samples randomly from the screening survey, identified 74 H. pylori-positive residents and 81 H. pylori-negative residents by a serological test. The serum concentrations of 15 elements (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium, copper, molybdenum, chromium, cobalt, nickel, lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and aluminum) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Serum cobalt was found at higher levels in the H. pylori-infected residents than the H. pylori-uninfected residents (0.246 vs 0.205 μg/L, P = 0.022), but no statistically significant differences in the serum levels of other elements were found. This is the first study to report the serum concentrations of 15 elements and their relationships with the infection status of H. pylori among local residents from Lujiang County with high gastric cancer risk. Although the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified cobalt and other soluble cobalt salts as possibly carcinogenic to human beings, our results may provide a clue to the relationships between cobalt, H. pylori, and gastric cancer.

Purpose: Patients with known hypersensitivity to metals often require hypoallergenic TKA implants. Coating of a standard implant is a common solution, and although in vitro tests have demonstrated reduction of polyethylene wear for these coatings, it is still unknown whether these implants have any clinical benefit. This study was initiated to investigate metal ion concentrations, knee function and patient-reported outcome (PRO) after coated and uncoated TKA., Methods: One hundred and twenty-two (122) patients were randomized to receive a coated or a standard TKA and, after exclusions, 59 patients were included in each group. Knee function and PRO were assessed with validated scores up to 3 years after surgery. Metal ion concentrations in blood samples were determined for chromium, cobalt, molybdenum and nickel, preoperatively and 1 year after surgery., Results: Chromium concentrations in patient plasma increased from a median of 0.25 to 1.30 µg/l in the standard TKA group, and from 0.25 to 0.75 µg/l in the coated TKA group (p = 0.012). Thirteen patients (3 coated, 10 standard TKA) had chromium concentrations above 2 µg/l. The concentrations of cobalt, molybdenum and nickel did not change. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) demonstrated a substantial improvement after TKA, without any differences between the groups., Conclusion: The increase in chromium concentration in the standard group needs further investigation. If surgeons use coated implants, they can be confident that these implants perform as well as standard implants., Level of Evidence: I.

Background: The aim of the present study was to determine changes in the serum concentrations of trace elements Cobalt (Co), Molybdenum (Mo) and Zinc (Zn) among high-level sportsmen., Methods: Eighty professional athletes of different metabolic modalities (aerobic, anaerobic and aerobic-anaerobic), were recruited before the beginning of their training seasons. Thirty-one sedentary participants of the same geographic area constituted the control group. Co, Mo and Zn analysis was performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)., Results: Serum concentration of Mo (p < 0.001) was higher among sportsmen compared to the control group values. Separated by modalities, the concentrations of Co in the aerobic-anaerobic athletes were lower (p < 0.01) than in the control group as well as than in the other athletes. The highest Mo concentration was found in anaerobic sportsmen (p < 0.001), followed by aerobic-anaerobic (p < 0.001) being both statistically higher in comparison with the control group. In relation to Zn, it was observed that aerobic-anaerobic (p < 0.001) and anaerobic (p < 0.001) sportsmen showed higher concentrations than the control participants. However, aerobic sportsmen showed lower concentrations (p < 0.01) than controls., Conclusion: This data manifest that long-term, daily physical training may induce variations in serum concentrations of several essential elements among sportsmen in comparison to untrained men and that these changes seems to be related to the sports modality practiced.

Adverse Reaction to Metal Debris (ARMD) is a major cause of implant failure leading to revision surgery in patients with metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasties. However, the pathogenesis and its association to implant wear are poorly understood and previous studies have yielded discrepant results. We sought to investigate the associations between histological findings, whole blood and synovial fluid metal ion concentrations and periprosthetic tissue metal concentrations in patients with MoM total hip replacements and hip resurfacings revised for ARMD. 107 hips in total were included in our study. Of these, 87 were total hip replacements and 20 were hip resurfacings, respectively. We found that whole blood, synovial fluid and periprosthetic tissue metal concentrations correlated poorly with histological findings. We suggest that the lack of a clear association between histological findings and wear measures in the present study as well as in previous studies is mostly influenced by variability in patient susceptibility. However, patients presenting with perivascular lymphocytic infiltration had lower chromium concentration in their periprosthetic tissues than patients with no perivascular lymphocytic infiltration. This may reflect the role of metal hypersensitivity in implant failure in these patients. Patients with total hip replacements evinced more necrosis and lymphocytic infiltration in their tissues than patients with hip resurfacings. This suggests that trunnion wear debris is more cytotoxic and/or immunogenic than bearing wear debris leading to higher failure rates seen in patients with total hip replacements.

Background: Beginning in 2008, metal-on-metal prostheses have been in the spotlight owing to much higher revision rates than expected. Adverse local tissue reactions have been well described in the literature as potential complications., Methods: Between 2012 and 2013, 13 patients with metal-on-metal total hip replacements were evaluated clinically and radiologically and with laboratory samples. The same tests were repeated between 2015 and 2016 on eight patients to assess any changes. In the laboratory assessment, we searched for chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, and nickel in blood and urine samples over 24 h., Results: Clinical assessment has shown good score in all patients except one. On a second examination, between 2015 and 2016, all patients obtained results similar to those obtained in the first assessment, except a patient, who reported a recent fall. In the radiological assessment between 2012 and 2013, results were optimal, apart from a case of aseptic mobilization. The patients reassessed 3 years after the first examination showed radiological results similar to those previously obtained, apart from a patient, who showed signals of mobilization. Metal levels found in their blood decreased in most cases after 3 years. Urine levels of nickel increased in five subjects, and chromium levels increased in four, but levels of cobalt and molybdenum decreased in four patients., Conclusion: It could be hypothesized that the decreasing trend of metal ion levels is associated with a stable wear status. On the contrary, a progressive increase in metal ion levels must be considered as early proof of implant loosening.

This article reports on the first attempt of a systematic study on the synthesis of carbon dots (C-dots) for the potential applications in labeling and detection of molybdenum ion (Mo 6+ ). Carbon dots (C-dots) were synthesized directly via a simple hydrothermal method using lemon juices as carbon precursor with different temperatures to control the luminescence of C-dots. The obtained C-dots had strong green light emission and the ability to use its luminescence properties as probes for Mo 6+ detection application, which is based on Mo 6+ induced luminescence quenching of C-dots. This analysis system exhibits strong sensitivity and good selectivity for Mo 6+ ion, and a detection limit as low as 20 ppm is achieved. Background: There is little reliable information on human exposure to the metals platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh), despite their use in enormous quantities in catalytic converters for automobile exhaust systems., Objectives: To evaluate blood concentrations of Pt (B-Pt), Pd (B-Pd) and Rh (B-Rh) in women from six European and three non-European countries, and to identify potentially influential factors. In addition, molybdenum (Mo) and strontium (Sr) were analysed., Methods: Blood from 248 women aged 47-61 was analysed by high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry under strict quality control., Results: The medians were: B-Pt 0.8 (range <0.6-5.2), B-Pd <5 (<5-9.3), B-Rh <0.4 (<0.4-3.6)ng/L and B-Mo 2.0 (0.2-16) and B-Sr 16.6 (3.5-49) μg/L. Two women with highly elevated B-Pt (242 and 60ng/L), previously cancer treated with cis-platinum, were not included in the data analysis. All elements varied geographically (2-3 times) (B-Pd P=0.05; all other elements P<0.001); variations within each area were generally 5-10 times. Traffic was not associated with increased concentrations., Conclusions: General population blood concentrations of Pt, Pd and Rh are within or below the single digit ng/L range, much lower than in most previous reports. This is probably due to improved analytical performance, allowing for more reliable information at ultra-trace levels. In general, Mo and Sr agreed with previously reported concentrations. All elements showed geographical and inter-individual variations, but no convincing relationships with self-reported traffic intensity were found. Elevated exposure to manganese (Mn) has long been a public health concern. However, there is currently no consensus on the best exposure biomarker. Here we aimed to investigate the exposomic characteristics of plasma metals among Mn-exposed workers and explore the potential biomarkers of Mn exposure in the blood pool. First, total sixteen plasma metals (Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Selenium, Lead, Chromium, Arsenic, Manganese, Nickel, Molybdenum, Cadmium, Mercury, Thallium, and Cobalt) were determined among 40 occupationally Mn-exposed subjects. Second, Mn levels in both plasma and blood cells were detected among 234 workers from the manganese-exposed workers healthy cohort (MEWHC), respectively. Analysis of plasma metal exposome showed that the plasma Mn concentrations were positively correlated to plasma Fe (r=0.361), Ni (r=0.363), Cr (r=0.486), and Hg (r=0.313) (all p<0.05). Mn concentrations in plasma were not significantly correlated to external exposure levels (p trend =0.200), and it was further confirmed among the 234 subjects (p trend =0.452). However, Mn concentrations in blood cells progressively increased as the external exposure dose increased (low-exposure group vs high-exposure group, median 11.53μg/L vs 20.41μg/L, p trend =0.001). Our results suggest that Mn in blood cells, but not plasma, could serve as a potential internal exposure biomarker. Background: Low concentrations and excessive concentrations of trace elements have been commonly reported in hemodialysis patients, but available studies have several important limitations., Study Design: Random sample of patients drawn from a prospective cohort., Setting & Participants: 198 incident hemodialysis patients treated in 3 Canadian centers., Measurements: We used mass spectrometry to measure plasma concentrations of the 25 elements at baseline, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years following enrollment in the cohort. We focused on low concentrations of zinc, selenium, and manganese and excessive concentrations of lead, arsenic, and mercury; low and excessive concentrations of the other 19 trace elements were treated as exploratory analyses. Low and excessive concentrations were based on the 5th and 95th percentile plasma concentrations from healthy reference populations., Results: At all 4 occasions, low zinc, selenium, and manganese concentrations were uncommon in study participants (≤5.1%, ≤1.8%, and ≤0.9% for zinc, selenium, and manganese, respectively) and a substantial proportion of participants had concentrations that exceeded the 95th percentile (≥65.2%, ≥74.2%, and ≥19.7%, respectively). Almost all participants had plasma lead concentrations above the 95th percentile at all time points. The proportion of participants with plasma arsenic concentrations exceeding the 95th percentile was relatively constant over time (9.1%-9.8%); the proportion with plasma mercury concentrations that exceeded the 95th percentile varied between 15.2% and 29.3%. Low arsenic, platinum, tungsten, and beryllium concentrations were common (>50%), as were excessive cobalt, manganese, zinc, vanadium, cadmium, selenium, barium, antimony, nickel, molybdenum, lead, and chromium concentrations., Conclusions: There was no evidence that low zinc, selenium, or manganese concentrations exist in most contemporary Canadian hemodialysis patients. Some patients have excessive plasma arsenic and mercury concentrations, and excessive lead concentrations were common. Aims: Many of the secondary effects of high levels of molybdenum (Mo) overlap with symptoms commonly seen in pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We measured plasma Mo levels and examined the relationship between Mo levels and kidney function., Materials and Methods: The study was carried out at the London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ontario, Canada with 36 children and adolescents 4 - 18 years of age with CKD. There were 1 - 6 trace element measurements (Mo and copper (Cu)) per patient. We studied the proportion of patients with abnormal trace element levels and the relationship between trace element levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), calculated using the Filler formula. Plasma Mo and Cu levels were measured using High Resolution Sector Field Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry. Anthropomorphic data and blood parameters were collected from our electronic chart program., Results: Median eGFR was 51 mL/min/1.73m 2 (35, 75). Median Mo level was 2.00 µg/L (1.40, 2.88). 20 patients had at least one set of Mo levels above the published reference interval in either unit, and the results of 46% of the tests were above the interval. There was a strong negative correlation between the Mo levels and the eGFR (Spearman's r = -0.627, p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: Our study suggests that pediatric patients with CKD have elevated plasma levels of Mo, which may cause secondary effects commonly associated with CKD. The elevated Mo levels in our center's catchment area may cause an accumulation of this trace element in patients with impaired renal function.

Background: Welders are exposed to a number of metallic elements during work. Bioaccessability, that is important for element uptake, has been little studied. This study addresses bioaccessability and uptake of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W) and vanadium (V) among welders., Methods: Bioaccessability of Cr, Mo, V and W was studied in airborne particulate matter collected by personal sampling of the workroom air among shipyard welders by using the lung lining fluid simulant Hatch solution. Associations between concentrations of Hatch soluble and non-soluble elements (Hatch sol and Hatch non-sol ) and concentrations of the four elements in whole blood, serum, blood cells and urine were studied., Results: Air concentrations of the four elements were low. Only a small fraction of Cr, V and W was Hatch sol , while similar amounts of Mo were Hatch sol and Hatch non-sol . Welders (N=70) had statistically significantly higher concentrations of all four elements in urine and serum when compared to referents (N=74). Highly statistically significant associations were observed between urinary W and Hatch sol W (p<0.001) and serum V and Hatch sol V (p<0.001), in particular when air samples collected the day before collection of biological samples were considered., Conclusions: Associations between Hatch sol elements in air and their biological concentrations were higher than when Hatch non-sol concentrations were considered. Background: In recent time, metal ion debris and adverse local tissue reaction have reemerged as an area of clinical concern with the use of large femoral heads after total hip arthroplasty (THA)., Methods: Between June 2014 and January 2015, 60 patients with a noncemented THA using a titanium (titanium, molybdenum, zirconium, and iron alloy) femoral stem and a V40 trunnion were identified with a minimum 5-year follow-up. All THAs had a 32- or 36-mm metal (n = 30) or ceramic (n = 30) femoral head coupled with highly cross-linked polyethylene. Cobalt, chromium, and nickel ions were measured., Results: Patients with metal heads had detectable cobalt and chromium levels. Cobalt levels were detectable in 17 (56.7%) patients with a mean of 2.0 μg/L (range: <1.0-10.8 μg/L). Chromium levels were detectable in 5 (16.7%) patients with a mean of 0.3 μg/L (range: <1.0-2.2 μg/L). All patients with a ceramic head had nondetectable cobalt and chromium levels. Cobalt and chromium levels were significantly higher with metal heads compared to ceramic heads (P < .01). Cobalt levels were significantly higher with 36-mm metal heads compared with 32-mm heads (P < .01). Seven patients with metal femoral heads had mild hip symptoms, 4 of whom had positive findings of early adverse local tissue reaction on magnetic resonance imaging. All ceramic THA was asymptomatic., Conclusion: The incidence and magnitude of cobalt and chromium levels is higher in metal heads compared to ceramic heads with this implant system (P < .01). Cases of ingesting button batteries by children are not common clinical situations in forensic medicine. Although it can be a cause of death when associated with digestive perforations, no cases of sudden death have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 17-month-old girl who presented at home with haematemesis, followed by failed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The child had been treated on two occasions for nasopharyngitis, 14 and 18 days prior to her death. The post-mortem scan revealed a radio-opaque foreign body in the oesophagus. The autopsy revealed the presence of a round button battery, 20 mm in diameter, blocking the lumen of the oesophagus in its upper third, associated with two parietal oesophageal ruptures opposite each other. There was limited digestive haemorrhage, but above all significant bronchial inhalation of blood. Toxicology analyses showed slightly increased blood levels of the heavy metals of which the battery was composed (lithium, chromium, manganese and molybdenum). The anatomopathological analyses confirmed the recent nature of these ruptures. Ingestions of button batteries localised at the level of the oesophagus are the cases linking to the highest risk of complications, particularly for batteries with a diameter of more than 20 mm and in children under the age of 4. The main difficulty in such clinical situations is identifying when the ingestion occurred, as more often than not, no witnesses are present. We discuss the advantages of anatomopathology and toxicology examinations targeted towards heavy metals in these forensic situations.

Background: Recent registry data reveal that modular-neck hip prostheses are associated with increased revision rates compared to fixed-neck stems. Poor implant survival has been associated to corrosion at the neck-stem junction, inducing metal ion release and subsequently adverse local tissue reactions. Data on metal ion release on the neck-stem junction of such stems are scarce. The purpose of this study was to evaluate corrosion at this interface by determining metal ion release., Methods: Serum and whole blood metal ion levels of 40 patients after 1 year of implantation of a modular-neck stem (titanium stem and cobalt-chromium neck) were compared with 10 patients with a monobloc version of the stem (all titanium) and 10 patients having no implant at all., Results: Seven of 40 patients (18%) with a modular-neck stem had cobalt or chromium concentrations >2 μg/L. These patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging using metal artifact reduction sequences, which revealed a pseudotumor in 1 patient., Conclusion: Corrosion at the neck-stem junction of modular-neck stems is a reported phenomenon, which is in part reflected by elevated systemic ion levels. Molybdenum is an essential trace element for mammalian, plant, and other animal systems. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has established an Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) to assure sufficient molybdenum intakes for human populations; however excessive exposures can cause toxicity. As a result, several agencies have established exposure guidance values to protect against molybdenum toxicity, including a Reference Dose (RfD), Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) and a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL). Biomonitoring for molybdenum in blood or urine in the general population is being conducted by the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) and the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Using pharmacokinetic data from controlled human dosing studies, Biomonitoring Equivalents (BEs) were calculated for molybdenum in plasma, whole blood, and urine associated with exposure guidance values set to protect against both nutritional deficits and toxicity. The BEEAR values in plasma, whole blood and urine are 0.5, 0.45 and 22 μg/L, respectively. The BEs associated with toxicity range from 0.9 to 31 μg/L in plasma, 0.8-28 μg/L in whole blood and 200-7500 μg/L in urine. Background: The aim of our study was to investigate the clinical results and serum metal ion levels in a cohort of patients who received total hip arthroplasty (THA) with ceramic-on-metal (CoM) bearings., Methods: From September 2009 to December 2011, 78 patients (89 hips) who underwent THA with CoM bearings were involved in this study. Harris Hip Score, Short-Form 12, and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores were measured and radiographs were taken for radiographic analysis. Serum metal ion levels of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and titanium (Ti) were measured using high-resolution inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry., Results: Severy-four patients (85 hips) were followed up at a mean of 50 months. At the end of follow-up, HSS, Short-Form 12, and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores were improved significantly compared with preoperative values. No intraoperative and postoperative complications occurred, and no radiolucency, osteolysis, and loosening was found from radiographic examination. Metal ion analysis showed that serum metal ions levels were significantly elevated compared with normal values. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that there was a correlation between 3 metal ion levels and body mass index(Co: r = 0.49, P < .01; Cr: r = 0.47, P < .01; Mo: r = 0.36, P = .04). No correlation was found between metal ion levels and age, cup abduction angle, cup anteversion angle, acetabular version, bilateral arthroplasty, cup screw used, hip stem implant type, or femoral head size., Conclusion: Our study concluded that the use of a CoM THA is effective clinically, but the systemic metal ion levels are significantly elevated at midterm follow-up. Background: The potential risks associated with hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) are controversial and underestimated. The aim of this study was to explore intermediate-term trends for the levels of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), and molybdenum (Mo) ions after HRA., Methods: Forty patients who underwent HRA from October 2005 to December 2010 were recruited to this study. The serum levels of metal ions were examined preoperatively and 3, 12, 24, and 60 months after surgery. Trends and differences in levels of metal ions with respect to sex, operated side, and body mass index (BMI) were analyzed., Results: There were no significant differences in levels of Cr, Co, and Mo at each time point with respect to sex, operated side, and BMI (p > 0.05). The postoperative levels of Cr, Co, and Mo ions were significantly higher than the preoperative levels across sex, operated side, and BMI groups. Postoperative levels of Cr, Co, and Mo peaked at 12, 24, and 60 months, respectively. Cr levels peaked earlier (at 12 months) in the overweight (BMI ≥25 kg/m(2)) group compared to the normal-weight group (BMI <25 kg/m(2)), Co levels (at 12 months) peaked in women compared to men, and Mo levels (at 3 months) peaked in the bilateral HRA group compared to the unilateral HRA group., Conclusions: Serum levels of Cr, Co, and Mo increased significantly after HRA. Cr levels peaked earlier in the overweight patients, Co levels peaked in women, and Mo levels peaked in patients who underwent bilateral HRA. However, there were no significant differences with respect to sex, operated side, and BMI.

In the plasma of dairy cows with 1-5 points of lameness, the mineral elements [calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iodine (I), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), and chromium (Cr)], the energy metabolic indicators [triglyceride (TG), glucose (Glu), total cholesterol (CHO), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), lactate (LA), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN)], and inflammatory indexes [bovine haptoglobin (BoHp), histamine (HIS), and immunoglobulin G (IgG)] were measured, respectively. Furthermore, the correlations of the measured indicators with the degrees of lameness were analyzed. The results showed that in the plasma of dairy cows with 2/3-5 points of lameness, for the mineral elements' levels, Ca, Cu, I, Se, and Fe significantly decreased, Cr significantly increased, and Mo showed a decreasing trend; for levels of the energy metabolism indicators, NEFA and BHBA significantly decreased, BUN and LA significantly increased, and Glu, CHO, and TG showed an increasing trend; for inflammation indexes, the concentrations of HIS, BoHp, and IgG all significantly increased; and further analysis indicated that the Mo, Fe, NEFA, BUN, BHBA, IgG, Ca, and Se had a significant correlation with the degrees of lameness. Resulting data revealed the changes of mineral elements, metabolism, and inflammation indexes in the plasma of dairy cows suffering from different degrees of lameness, which will provided basic knowledge for in-depth understanding of lameness in dairy cows.

Background: Despite the theoretical advantages of ceramic-on-metal (CoM) bearings observed in laboratory settings, limited clinical data are available to support in vitro results. Our present study prospectively investigated the clinical results, serum metal ion levels, inflammatory factor levels, and liver-kidney function in a cohort of patients who received total hip arthroplasty (THA) with CoM bearings., Methods: The cohort comprised 82 THAs in 71 patients (41 men and 30 women), with a mean age of 54 (range 22-77) years. The mean follow-up was four years. All patients completed pre- and postoperative clinical assessment using the Harris Hip Score, Short Form-12, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, and radiographic analysis. The serum metal ion levels of cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, and titanium were measured using high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and were compared with normal reference values. Inflammatory factors including C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation, and interleukin-6 levels, and liver-kidney function including alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen, were measured in our hospital clinical key laboratory., Results: At the end of the follow-up period, all clinical assessments showed a statistically significant improvement. Although the inflammatory factor levels and liver-kidney function were within normal ranges, the serum levels of metal ion were significantly elevated compared with normal values: cobalt, 2.8 μg/L; chromium, 2.2 μg/L; molybdenum, 0.9 μg/L; and titanium, 2.1 μg/L. Spearman's correlation analysis showed an association between cobalt, chromium, and titanium metal ion levels and BMI values., Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the use of a CoM THA was clinically effective and that metal ion levels were significantly elevated at midterm follow-up. Whether the elevated metal ion levels may reduce adverse reactions is unknown, and long-term follow-up is needed.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of exposure to aluminum, nickel, thallium and uranium on the metabolism of essential elements in humans, as well as the relationship between uranium, thallium, nickel, and aluminum and essential elements (Ca, Mg, Zn, Se, Mn, Co, Cr, and Mo) in the whole blood and blood serum of healthy men who were occupationally exposed. This study included 97 healthy men, 31-64 years age, including 70 workers in a thermo power plant and 27 control subjects. The results showed that chronic, moderate exposure of trace elements (Al, Ni, Tl, and U) lead to decreased serum chromium (SCr) and blood molybdenum levels (BMo), whereas by the results achieved in terms of correlations between non-essential and essential elements, non-essential elements such as uranium, thallium, nickel, and aluminum, despite their concentration within the reference values, are strongly competitive with essential elements in biochemical processes.

This study investigated the subchronic toxicity of molybdenum (Mo) in Sprague-Dawley rats given sodium molybdate dihydrate in the diet for 90days at dose levels of 0, 5, 17 or 60mgMo/kgbw/day. The study complied with OECD Test Guideline (TG) 408, with additional examination of estrus cycles and sperm count, motility, and morphology from OECD TG 416. The overall no-observed-adverse-effect level was 17mgMo/kgbw/day, based on effects on body weight, body weight gain, food conversion efficiency and renal histopathology (females only) at 60mgMo/kgbw/day. No treatment-related adverse effects on reproductive organ weights or histopathology, estrus cycles or sperm parameters were observed at any dose level. No adverse effects were observed in the high dose animals after the 60-day recovery period, with the exception that male rats did not fully recover from reduced body weight. Serum blood, liver and kidney samples were analyzed for molybdenum, copper, zinc, manganese, iron, cobalt and selenium; high levels of molybdenum and copper were found in the serum, blood, liver and kidneys of rats treated with 60mgMo/kgbw/day. In this study we determined the concentration of 9 trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Pb, Se and Zn) in whole blood of children (n=100, 64 girls, 36 boys and median age: 36 months) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The proportion of children potentially deficient in essential elements or poisoned by toxic elements was evaluated. The aging effects on the concentration of these elements were also investigated. The median values were 3.17μg/L (As), 0.15μg/L (Cd), 1.1mg/L (Cu), 2.1μg/L (Hg), 10.4μg/L (Mn), 17.7μg/L (Mo), 8.7μg/dL (Pb), 10.7μg/L (Se) and 5.0mg/L (Zn). The concentration of many elements (As, Cd, Hg, Mn, Pb and Zn) showed significant age variations but not sex influence. Regarding levels of the essential elements (Cu, Mn, Mo, Se and Zn), B-Cu, B-Mn, B-Se and B-Zn were in the normal range, whereas exceeded levels were observed for B-Mo. None of these children was deficient in essential elements. Except B-Cd, all toxic elements showed exceeded blood levels. The proportion of children potentially poisoned by toxic elements varies from 10% (n=10) to 95% (n=95) and depends on toxic element: 95% for As, 10% for Hg and 35% for Pb. The main health concerns emerging from this study are the high As, Hg and Pb exposures of the Kinshasan children requiring further documentation, corrective actions and the implementation of appropriate regulations., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier GmbH. Purpose: Metal ion release by orthopaedic implants may cause local and systemic effects and induce hypersensitivity reactions. Coated implants have been developed to prevent or reduce these effects. This study was initiated to investigate the safety of a novel coating for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implants., Methods: A total of 120 patients undergoing primary TKA with no history of hypersensitivity and no other metal implant were randomised to receive either a coated or uncoated implant. Chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mb) and nickel (Ni) hypersensitivity patch testing and plasma ion concentrations were evaluated pre-operatively and one year post-operatively., Results: At the one year follow-up both groups demonstrated significant improvement in knee function and quality of life. One new weakly positive reaction to Co in the TKA group with coated implant and two doubtful skin reactions to Ni (one in each group) were noted. Even with sensitisation to implant materials no skin reactions were observed. Plasma metal ion concentrations did not increase and were not elevated at the one year follow-up in either group., Conclusions: Sensitisation after TKA was rare and had no influence on clinical results. TKA with coated implant and standard TKA demonstrated no plasma metal ion elevation.

Metal-on-metal resurfacing arthroplasty of the hip has been used increasingly over the last 10 years in younger active patients. The dissolution of the metal wear particles results in measurable increases in cobalt and chromium ions in the serum and urine of patients with a metal-on-metal bearing. We measured the cobalt, chromium, and molybdenum ion levels in urine; serum; and breast milk in a young and active patient with a metal-on-metal hip prosthesis after a pathologic fracture of the femoral neck. Metal-on-metal hip prosthesis leads to increasing levels of molybdenum in breast milk in the short-term follow-up. There are no increasing levels of chromium and cobalt ions in breast milk. Besides the already known elevated concentrations in serum of chromium and cobalt after implantation of a metal-on-metal hip prosthesis, we found no increasing levels of chromium and cobalt in urine., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Our previous report indicated that magnesium (Mg) deficiency increased molybdenum (Mo) concentration in the rat liver, suggesting the possibility that Mg deficiency affects Mo metabolism. Growing male rats were given a control diet or a Mg-deficient diet for 4 weeks. Urine and feces were collected during the second and fourth weeks of the feeding trial. The liver, kidney, spleen, skeletal muscle, and blood were collected at the end of the feeding trial. Mg deficiency did not affect the apparent absorption of Mo, but it reduced urinary excretion of Mo. The retention of Mo tended to be higher in the Mg-deficient group than in the control group. Hepatic Mo concentration was higher in the Mg-deficient group than in the control group, but Mg deficiency did not affect Mo concentration in other tissues and plasma. Mg deficiency downregulated the mRNA expression of Mo transporter 2 (MOT2) in the liver, but not in the kidney. These results suggest that Mg deficiency decreases urinary Mo excretion, which is too slight to affect plasma Mo concentration, and that Mg deficiency selectively disturbs the homeostatic mechanism of Mo in the liver, which is not related to the mRNA expression of MOT2 in the liver.

An experiment was conducted to investigate on the effects of different levels of copper (Cu: 0, 19, and 38 mg/kg) and molybdenum (Mo: 0 and 5 mg/kg) supplements and the interaction of these two factors on serum lipid profiles and antioxidant status in cashmere goats during the cashmere fiber growing period. Thirty-six Liaoning cashmere goats (approximately 1.5 years of age; 27.53±1.38 kg of body weight) were assigned to one of six treatments in a completely randomized design involving a 2×3 factorial arrangement. Goats were housed in individual pens and fed with Chinese wild rye- and alfalfa hay-based diet containing 4.72 mg Cu/kg, 0.16 mg Mo/kg, and 0.21 % S for 84 days. Blood samples were collected on day 84. The triglyceride concentration did not differ among treatments (P>0.05). Supplemental Cu, regardless of Mo level, decreased (P<0.05) the concentrations of serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increased (P<0.05) the concentration of serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol, but there were no differences (P>0.05) in these values between Cu-supplemented groups. Supplemental Cu increased (P<0.05) the activities of serum ceruloplasmin (Cp), Cu-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and decreased (P<0.05) the malondialdehyde content. The serum GSH-Px activity was also increased (P<0.05) by Mo supplementation. There was a tendency of the interaction effects of Cu and Mo on the activities of Cp (P=0.094), SOD (P=0.057), and GSH-Px (P=0.062), and goats fed with 19 mg Cu/kg in the absence of Mo tended to show the highest serum SOD activity, while goats fed with 38 mg Cu/kg with 5 mg Mo/kg tended to show the highest values of serum Cp and GSH-Px. Addition of Cu, Mo, or their interaction had no influence (P>0.05) on the activities of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, and lactate dehydrogenase, and the concentrations of serum glucose and total protein. In conclusion, addition of 19 mg Cu/kg in the absence of Mo (the total dietary Cu level of 23.72 mg/kg) was recommended for altering the fat metabolism and obtaining the optimal antioxidant activity of cashmere goats, while 38 mg Cu/kg should be supplemented when 5 mg Mo/kg was added in the basal diet (the total dietary level of 42.72 mg Cu/kg, 5.16 mg Mo/kg, and 0.21 % S) during the cashmere growing period.

Background: Metal implants may wear and corrode, resulting in systemic dissemination of metallic debris that is measurable in serum. Concern exists regarding adverse health effects related to implant-derived debris. Minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) is a popular technique in which a stainless steel substernal bar is implanted to achieve deformity correction. Serum metal levels have not previously been investigated after MIRPE., Methods: Serum chromium, molybdenum, and nickel levels were measured in this cross-sectional study of 11 children implanted with pectus bars after MIRPE. Samples were analyzed using high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry., Results: Median serum chromium and nickel values were elevated 3.3-fold (P = .0003) and 2.3-fold (P = .25), respectively, compared with age-matched controls. Serum chromium and nickel levels were abnormally elevated in 6 (55%) of 11 and 5 (45%) of 11, respectively. In patients whom postexplantation metal levels were measured, previously elevated levels were lowered. Serum chromium levels in children after MIRPE are comparable with adult cohorts with hip arthroplasty implants measured 1-year postoperatively. No acute metal toxicity was observed., Conclusions: Abnormally elevated levels of serum metal levels are measurable in children implanted with pectus bars. The article deals with the characteristics of alterations of mineral metabolism indicators in children of various age with chronic diseases ofgastrointestinal tract and having body mass of normal and different surplus degrees. The sample consisted of 127 children aged from 6 to 15 years with chronic gastroduodenitis, pancreatitis and cholecystitis. The concentration of bioelements in plasma was determined using the technique of mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. The study established the increase of concentration of molybdenum 4.3 times, chrome--8.4 times and selenium--1.36 times. The revealed bioelemental misbalance impacts the overall health of children and course of disease and hence has to be accounted in case of application of treatment targeted to the correction of mineral metabolism.

Metal-on-metal hip replacement implants generate wear debris and release ions both locally and systemically in patients. To investigate dissemination of metal, we determined blood and organ levels of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), and molybdenum (Mo) following the implantation of Co-Cr alloy wear debris in mice using skin pouches as a model system. We observed increased metal levels in blood for up to 72 h; the levels of Co were highest and remained elevated for 7 days. Co levels were elevated in all organs studied (liver, kidney, spleen, lung, heart, brain, and testes), with the peak at 48 h; highest levels were measured in liver and kidney (838.9 ± 223.7 ng/g in liver, and 938.8 ± 131.6 ng/g in kidney). Organ Cr levels were considerably lower than Co levels, for example, Cr in kidney was 117.2 ± 12.6 ng/g tissue at 48 h. Co is more mobile than Cr, reaching higher levels at earlier time points. This could be due to local tissue binding of Cr. Exposure to Co-Cr particles in vivo altered antioxidant enzyme expression and activities. We observed induction of catalase protein in the liver and glutathione reductase (GR) and peroxidase (GPx) proteins in the spleen. Activities of catalase and GPx in the liver were significantly increased while that of GR was decreased in the kidney. Organs of mice with Co-Cr particle implantation were exposed to increased metal levels capable of inducing reactive oxygen species scavenging enzymes, suggesting the tissue may be subjected to oxidative stress; however, the overall antioxidant defence system was not markedly disturbed., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Purpose: The effects of systemic metal ion exposure in patients with implants made of common prosthetic alloys continue to be a matter of concern. The aim of the study was to determine the measurement values of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo) in serum following rotating-hinge knee arthroplasty., Methods: Blood was taken from 25 patients [mean follow-up 35 (range nine to 67) months] treated with megaprostheses (n=17) or standard rotating-hinge devices (n=8) and analysed using electrothermal graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (ET-ASS)., Results: Determining the concentrations of metal ions following rotating-hinge knee arthroplasty revealed increments for Co and Cr but not Mo. Metal ion release was significantly higher in patients with megaprostheses compared to a standard rotating-hinge knee device (Co p=0,024; Cr p=0.025)., Conclusion: The authors believe there might be an additional metal ion release from the surface of the prosthesis and not only from the articulating surfaces because, in cases of rotating-hinge knee prosthesis, there is a metal-on-polyethylene articulation and not a direct metal-on-metal junction. Nevertheless, long-term studies are required to determine adverse effects of Co, Cr and Mo following total hip replacement and total knee arthroplasty.

The present study aims to examine the effect of supplementation of zinc on the distribution of various elements in the sera of diabetic rats subjected to an acute swimming exercise. A total of 80 Sprague-Dawley-type adult male rats were equally allocated to one of eight groups: Group 1, general; Group 2, zinc-supplemented; Group 3, zinc-supplemented diabetic; Group 4, swimming control; Group 5, zinc-supplemented swimming; Group 6, zinc-supplemented diabetic swimming; Group 7, diabetic swimming; and Group 8, diabetes. The rats were injected with 40 mg/kg/day subcutaneous streptozotocin (STZ) twice, with a 24-h interval between two injections. Zinc was supplemented at a dose of 6 mg/kg/day (ip) for 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected at the end of the 4-week study, and serum levels of lead, cobalt, molybdenum, chrome, sulfur, magnesium, manganese, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, iron, calcium, zinc, and selenium (mg/L) were determined with atomic emission. The lowest molybdenum, chrome, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, lead, selenium, and zinc values were obtained in Group 7 and 8. These same parameters were higher in the swimming exercise group (Group 4), relative to all other groups. The values in zinc-supplemented groups were found lower than the values in Group 4, but higher than those in Group 6 and 7. The results obtained from the study demonstrate that acute swimming exercise and diabetes affect the distribution of various elements in the serum, while zinc supplementation can prevent the negative conditions associated with both exercise and diabetes.

The present investigation was carried out to determine the molybdenum (Mo) status of blood plasma and milk of lactating cows at the Livestock Experimental Station, Khizer abad, Sargodha, Pakistan. Blood and milk from the lactating cows were sampled periodically after every month during winter so as to examine the effect of sampling intervals on Mo as well as its transfer from various dietary sources to animals during the whole investigation period. The Mo contents of blood plasma and milk except some instances during the study coincided nearly with their respective critical levels. Thus, there is no need of supplementation of Mo in feeds for the cows being reared at the ranch.

The quality of the diet of obese children is poor. Eating habits may alter micronutrient status in obese patients. In this study, we determined the serum levels of selenium, zinc, vanadium, molybdenum, iron, copper, beryllium, boron, chromium, manganese, cobalt, silver, barium, aluminum, nickel, cadmium, mercury, and lead in obese Turkish children. Thirty-four obese and 33 healthy control subjects were enrolled in the study. Serum vanadium and cobalt levels of obese children were significantly lower than those of the control group (0.244 ± 0.0179 vs. 0.261 ± 0.012 μg/l, p < 0.001, and 0.14 ± 0.13 vs. 0.24 ± 0.15 μg/l, p = 0.011, respectively). There was no significant difference between groups regarding the other serum trace element levels. In conclusion, there may be alterations in the serum levels of trace elements in obese children and these alterations may have a role in the pathogenesis of obesity.

Objective: To identify exposures possibly contributing to anemia cases among hexavalent chromium medical surveillance program enrollees., Methods: An investigation encompassed metals surveillance programs, extensive workplace sampling and remediation, consultation, evaluation of laboratory accuracy, and follow-up of anemic individuals., Results: Workers had underlying medical conditions that affected surveillance results. There was a systemic error in classification based on hematocrit value. The prevalence of anemia in a workforce averaging 52 years old was 16%., Conclusions: Anemia may be more prevalent in middle-aged workers than expected. Modern laboratories generally report a calculated hematocrit value, and using hemoglobin for most classification purposes is preferred. Characteristics of a specific workforce, including age, health, hobbies, and diet, should be taken into account when interpreting medical surveillance program findings. The value of a team approach in addressing occupational health problems was demonstrated.
