1. Injection Feedback for a Storage Ring

Abstract

We report on an injection feedback scheme for the ThomX storage ring project. ThomX is a 50-MeV-electron accelerator prototype which will use Compton backscattering in a storage ring to generate a high flux of hard X-rays. Given the slow beam damping (in the ring), the injection must be performed with high accuracy to avoid large betatron oscillations. A homemade analytic code is used to compute the corrections that need to be applied before the beam injection to achieve a beam position accuracy of a few hundred micrometers in the first beam position monitors (BPMs). In order to do so the code needs the information provided by the ring's diagnostic devices. The iterative feedback system has been tested using MadX simulations. Our simulations show that a performance that matches the BPMs' accuracy can be achieved in less than 50 iterations in all cases. Details of this feedback algorithm, its efficiency and the simulations are discussed.

Abstract

We report on studies of the loss maps for particles travelling from the end of the ThomX's linac along the transfer line to the end of the ring first turn in preparation of the machine commissioning. ThomX is a 50-MeV-electron accelerator prototype which will use Compton backscattering to generate a high flux of hard X-rays. The accelerator tracking code MadX is used to simulate electrons' propagation and compute losses. These maps may be projected at any localisation along the bunch path or plotted along the bunch path. This information is particularly relevant at the locations of the monitoring devices (screens, position monitors,...) where loss predictions will be compared with measurements.

Abstract

A new versatile facility LEETECH for detector R&D, tests and calibration is designed and constructed. It uses electrons produced by the photoinjector PHIL at LAL, Orsay and provides a powerful tool for wide range R&D studies of different detector concepts delivering "mono-chromatic" samples of low energy electrons with adjustable energy and intensity. Among other innovative instrumentation techniques, LEETECH will be used for testing various gaseous tracking detectors and studying new Micromegas/InGrid concept which has very promising characteristics of spatial resolution and can be a good candidate for particle tracking and identification. In this paper the importance and expected characteristics of such facility based on detailed simulation studies are addressed.

Abstract

LAL is now equiped with its own platform for photoinjectors tests and Research and Developement, named PHIL (PHotoInjectors at LAL). This facility has two main purposes: push the limits of the photoinjectors performances working on both the design and the associated technology and provide a low energy (MeV) short pulses (ps) electron beam for the interested users. Another very important goal of this machine will be to provide an opportunity to form accelerator physics students, working in a high technology environment. To achieve this goal a test line was realised equipped with an RF source, magnets and beam diagnostics. In this article we will desrcibe the PHIL beamline and its characteristics together with the description of the first two photoinjector realised in LAL and tested: the ALPHAX and the PHIN RF Guns.

Abstract

ThomX is a new generation Compact Compton Source. It is currently commissioned by and at the IJCLab (Laboratoire de physique des 2 infinis - Irène Joliot-Curie (UMR9012)) at Orsay. The first beam is expected at the begining of 2021. The aim of ThomX is to demonstrate the characteristics of an intense and Compact (lab-size) X-ray source based on Compton Scattering. The performances are mostly driven by the laser optical system which is above the state of the art of stored laser power. Proof of principle of various X-ray techniques will be performed thanks to the versatile ThomX beamline. Firstly, this article presents the machine description. Secondly, the issues and limits of the laser system are discussed. Then, the ThomX beamline is described and the machine status conclude the ThomX presentation. Finally, the expected performances for the next years and the possible experiments that can be made with this new machine are detailed.

La rétrodiffusion des photons entrant en collision avec les électrons que seront produits les rayons X d’énergie réglable entre 45 et 90 keV. Il s’agit d’un projet pluridisciplinaire visant diverses applications, notamment dans le domaine biomédical (imagerie et thérapie), dans celui de l’héritage culturel (identification et préservation) et en science des matériaux (caractérisation). Des répliques de cet appareil sont susceptibles d’être implantées dans un laboratoire, un hôpital ou un musée, où un tel équipement serait complémentaire des sources de rayonnement synchrotron dont l’accès est beaucoup plus difficile. Un état des lieux du projet sera présenté incluant les avancements du bâtiment, des différents sous systèmes qui composent l'accélérateur et une tentative de planning pour l'obtention du premier faisceau.

Abstract

Пропонується нова розробка додаткового пристрою для фотоінжектора PHIL (ЛАЛ, Орсе). Запропонована розробка стане ефективним інструментом для широкого кола R&D стадій для різних детекторів, яка забезпечить “монохроматичні” пучки низькоенергетич­них електронів зі змінною енергією та інтенсивністю. Головний напрямок використання цього пристрою це радіаційно стійкі трекові детектори, системи розпізнавання типу частинок з використанням Micromegas/InGrid та методики моніторування пучка за допомогою зігнутих кристалів. Інше безпосереднє використання цього пристрою це калібрування сцинтиляційних кристалів для експерименту SuperNEMO, тестування діаманто­вих детекторів як монітори профілю та трекові детектори в проекті ATF2. Такі важливі величини як dE/dx для нерелятивістських електронів будуть виміряні за допоїмо­гою Micromegas/InGrid детекторів при реконструюванні одиночних електронів. Main detector concepts to be studied with the new platform range from large area radiation resistant precision tracking, Micromegas/InGrid concept, and particle identification, to the beam monitoring using bent crystal technique. Other immediate platform applications are scintillator measurements for the neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments (SuperNEMO), diamond sensor tests as profile monitors and as tracking devices for the ATF2 project. In the framework of by-product physics studies, dE/dx for non-relativistic electrons will be measured using Micromegas/InGrid detector for single primary electron cluster reconstruction. Main characteristics of the setup and simulation results are addressed by this paper, Предлагается создать новую установку для фотоинжектора PHIL в ЛАЛ, Орсе. Abstract

PHIL (PHoto-Injecteur au Lal) est un accélérateur d'électrons de basse énergie (entre 2 et 6 MeV) basé au LAL et ayant démarré fin 2009. Il est destiné à remplir plusieurs fonctions : banc de test et de R&D pour les photo-injecteurs RF, accueil d'utilisateurs, formation des étudiants et du personnel aux technologies et à la physique des accélérateurs. Durant la période 2011-2013 deux photo-injecteurs (Alpha-X et PHIN) ont été successivement montés. Ils ont permis d'atteindre différents objectifs, comme par exemple atteindre un gradient accélérateur de 90MV/m ou tester une cathode en Magnésium. Une fenêtre de sortie en aluminium a également été montée, permettant de faire sortir le faisceau à l'air pour le mettre à disposition d'utilisateurs : le test de capteurs diamant et la calibration de détecteurs pour l'étude des rayons cosmiques sont actuellement en cours. Parallèlement à cela, les outils de caractérisation du faisceau se développent également. Notamment grâce à l'installation d'imageurs YAG et d'un détecteur Cerenkov, mais aussi par l'utilisation de méthodes multi-paramétriques pour mesurer l'émittance transverse (méthode des 3 gradients et des 3 écrans) et la longueur (méthode des 3 phases) du faisceau.

Abstract

For the JEM-EUSO Collaboration; The fluorescence yield is a key ingredient in cosmic ray energy determination. It is sensitive to pressure, temperature and humidity. Up to now the fluorescence yield of the brightest line at 337 nm has been measured in an absolute way in one set of conditions, whereas fluorescence yields at the other wavelengths have been relatively measured for different conditions. Thus, absolute calibration for all the lines is unclear. We will do all measurements at once using the same apparatus: all the lines will be measured absolutely and not relatively for all conditions. For that we will use the 3-5 MeV electron beam of the PHIL accelerator (Photon Injector at LAL), shooting in a box filled with air at varying pressures, temperatures and humidity. Delta rays resulting from the beam collisions with Nitrogen are responsible for the light yield. The light detection probability should be independent of its emission point especially at the delta ray stopping point. The idea is to use an integrating sphere, encapsulated in a vessel where pressure, temperature and humidity can be varied. This sphere will have two ports for the beam (in and out), one more port dedicated to a NIST photodiode for calibration and another port feeding optical fibers going to: A) a grating spectrometer equipped with cooled CCD. B) a photomultiplier with BG3 filters to measure directly the integrated yield. Calibrations at the percent level, will give each line spectrum yields with a precision between 2 to 5%. A special issue will be to estimate the leakage due to "high energy" delta rays. Thus, we the air density will be increased, the beam energy will be lowered until the beam stops inside the sphere. Then, the energy loss will be precisely derived from the Bethe-Bloch formula. We will present the set-up.

Abstract

International audience; Most of ra­dio-fre­quen­cy (RF) pho­to-in­jec­tors op­er­at­ing in the world are made of 1,5 or 2,5 cells. Al­though ex­cel­lent qual­i­ties of elec­tron beam have been ob­tained there are few cases where the ex­ten­sion of the num­ber of cells could be in­ter­est­ing. For in­stance, the small ac­cel­er­a­tors with en­er­gy in the range of 10-20 MeV which are most­ly based on the op­er­a­tion of a RF gun with a boost­er. One sin­gle RF gun ful­fill­ing both func­tions would sim­pli­fy the con­struc­tion and the cost of such ma­chines. The in­her­ent sim­plic­i­ty would also en­sure a bet­ter re­li­a­bil­i­ty. We will pre­sent 2D and 3D RF sim­u­la­tions of this 4,5 cells RF pho­to-in­jec­tor. In ad­di­tion we will com­pare through beam dy­nam­ics sim­u­la­tions, with the PARMELA and ASTRA codes, the per­for­mances of this gun with re­spect of clas­si­cal de­sign based on the cou­ple RF gun plus boost­er.

Abstract

International audience; The CLIC polarized positron source is based on a positron production scheme in which polarized photons are produced by Compton process. Compton backscattering happens in a so-called "Compton ring" where an electron beam of 1.06 GeV interacts with a powerful laser beam amplified in an optical resonator. The circularly-polarized gamma rays are sent on to a target, producing pairs of longitudinally polarized electrons and positrons. An Adiabatic Matching Device maximizes the capture of the positrons. A normal-conducting 2 GHz Linac accelerates the beam up to 2.424 GeV before injection into the Pre-Damping Ring (PDR). The nominal CLIC bunch population is 4.4x10**9 particles per bunch. Since the photon flux coming out from a "Compton ring" is not sufficient to obtain the requested charge, a stacking process is required in the PDR. Another option is to use a "Compton Energy Recovery Linac" where a quasi-continual stacking in the PDR could be achieved. A third option is to use a "Compton Linac" which would not require stacking. We describe the overall scheme as well as advantages and constraints of the three different options.

Abstract

Work supported by the French Agence Nationale de la recherche as part of the program EQUIPEX under reference ANR-10-EQPX-51, the Ile de France region, CNRS-IN2P3 and Université Paris Sud XI - http://accelconf.web.cern.ch/AccelConf/IPAC2014/papers/wepro052.pdf; A collaboration of seven research institutes and an industry has been set up for the ThomX project, a compact Compton Backscattering Source (CBS) based in Orsay - France. After a period of study and definition of the machine performance, a full description of all the systems has been provided. The infrastructure work has been started and the main systems are in the call for tender phase. In this paper we will illustrate the definitive machine parameters and components characteristics. We will also update the results of the different technical and experimental activities on optical resonators, RF power supplies and on the electron gun.

Abstract

A precise measurement of the energy is essential for the study of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Basically, two types of detectors are used for this purpose: Surface arrays which sample the shower tail: this method records the lateral development of the shower of secondary particles using an array of particle detectors and Fluorescence detectors which record the longitudinal development of the shower and observe the atmospheric fluorescence induced by charged particles in the shower. The second method is currently the most precise one to estimate the energy of cosmic rays. Fluorescence detectors provide a measurement of primary cosmic ray energy which is relatively model independent, as the fluorescence intensity is proportional to the electromagnetic energy released by the shower into the atmosphere. The main source of systematic uncertainties for energy estimation comes from the limited accuracy in the measurement of the air-fluorescence yield. A new type of absolute measurement of the nitrogen fluorescence yield in the air will be performed at LAL using 3 items which will yield an very accurate precision in all conditions of pressure, temperature, and pollutants. A 5 MeV electron beam will be provided by the new electron accelerator PHIL at LAL. As the fluorescence yield is proportional to the energy loss of the electrons, the contribution of secondary electrons (deltas) to the signal is much more important than the contribution of the primary electrons. It has therefore been chosen to use an integrating sphere, the basic property of which being that the probability to detect light is independent from where the light is produced inside the sphere. An output device on this sphere will be equipped with a set of optical fibers driving the fluorescence light to a Jobin-Yvon spectrometer equipped with an LN2 cooled CCD. The fluorescence spectrum in the 300-400 nm range will be accurately measured in steps of 0.1 nm resolution. A PMT equipped with a BG3 filter (the same as on JEM-EUSO) will be set on the sphere to measure the integrated yield. The sphere will be monitored by a NIST photo-diode, and will be surrounded by a spherical envelope to create a temperature controlled chamber (a Dewar). With this setup it will be possible to vary the temperature from -60degC to +40degC and the pressure from 1 to 0.01 atm. The expected precision of the yield should be better than 5%.

The aim of ThomX is to demonstrate the characteristics of an intense and Compact (lab-size) X-ray source based on Compton Scattering. The performances are mostly driven by the laser optical system which is above the state of the art of stored laser power. Proof of principle of various X-ray techniques will be performed thanks to the versatile ThomX beamline. Firstly, this article presents the machine description. Secondly, the issues and limits of the laser system are discussed. Then, the ThomX beamline is described and the machine status conclude the ThomX presentation. Finally, the expected performances for the next years and the possible experiments that can be made with this new machine are detailed.
