Searching for people online is a common search task that most of us have performed at some point or other. With so much information about people available online it is often quite amazing what one can find out about someone else -- especially when information taken from various sources is pieced together to create a more detailed picture of the individual, and used to make inferences about them. These "cumulative revelations"’ gleaned from one’s online digital footprint create potential risks to the individual (e.g. identity theft, stalking, harassment, cyberbullying, loss employment opportunities, etc.). In this work, we present a cyber-safety tool designed to explore how people assess and judge the relevance and risks of small, apparently innocuous pieces of information associated with fictitious personas when searching and browsing online profiles and social media. The tool aims to provide education and awareness of the potential risks of cumulative revelations by having participants engage with different scenarios. In a study conducted with over 200 participants on two different search scenarios (identity theft, online reputation) we found that participants' ability to identify risky posts and piece together revelations varied considerably across the population. However, most participants reported increased awareness and understanding of risks and threats posed by their online information behaviours.

There is an urgent need for playful, personalised, interactive, comforting and tactile solutions that help those living with dementia to live positively ( Treadaway et al.,2014; Treadaway et al., 2019). Using research through design and a person centred approach focusing on the 'lived experience of people' (Reason, 1944), this paper explores the making and use of interactive textiles for well-being within two Dementia Friendly Communities (DFC) in Scotland. Working closely with these groups, the researcher designed and facilitated interactive textile workshops. Following the workshops, the DFC's decided they would 'craft bomb' (using craft to decorate) their communities with textiles to raise awareness of dementia, and invite the wider community to collaborate.

Luciano Floridi coined the term infosphere to update the concept of the "ecosphere" for the information society. Just as with the ecosphere, the infosphere is a fragile environment where ruthless commercial practices can cause lasting economic degradation. Mining for data can in this sense be seen as harmful as mining for tin, and if "big data" is really the new oil, then we must be wary of ruthless data barons causing data spills. The paper reports some of the findings and research of an EPSRC funded project on "cumulative revelations", the risks that are generated through seemingly small and individually innocuous disclosure of information, which nonetheless over time accumulates critical potential. We explore how we can use ideas and concepts from environmental science and environmental law to think of better ways to create sustainable data infrastructures in the presence of such "de-minimis" risks that are ill catered for in traditional risk-based approaches to regulation

This paper outlines the crowdsourcing, display and gifting of a “Sonic Flock” of interactive textile birds in the Outer Hebrides. The research explores how the Sonic Flock can enhance wellbeing, social connection and facilitate conversation within and between Dementia Friendly Communities (DFC). A range of themes - including bringing the outside in, birds and textile making were identified through conversations with care home residents, staff and families of those living in care homes in the Outer Hebrides. These themes were fed into the Sonic Flock project. Knitted and sewn birds were crowdsourced from makers throughout the UK. The resulting Sonic Flock; over 80 birds, were displayed in An Lanntair as part of Cuimhne (‘memory’ in Gaelic) exhibition. Some of the textile birds were designed and developed to play bird songs when touched. After the exhibition, the birds were gifted to island residents living in care homes throughout Lewis, Harris and Uist. They acted as social objects and conversation starters, building relationships between the researcher, staff, residents and wider DFC.

PURPOSE: Crowdsourcing is based on outsourcing computationally intensive tasks to numerous individuals in the online community who have no formal training. Our aim was to develop a novel online tool designed to facilitate large-scale annotation of digital retinal images, and to assess the accuracy of crowdsource grading using this tool, comparing it to expert classification. METHODS: We used 100 retinal fundus photograph images with predetermined disease criteria selected by two experts from a large cohort study. The Amazon Mechanical Turk Web platform was used to drive traffic to our site so anonymous workers could perform a classification and annotation task of the fundus photographs in our dataset after a short training exercise. Three groups were assessed: masters only, nonmasters only and nonmasters with compulsory training. We calculated the sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) plots for all classifications compared to expert grading, and used the Dice coefficient and consensus threshold to assess annotation accuracy. RESULTS: In total, we received 5389 annotations for 84 images (excluding 16 training images) in 2 weeks. A specificity and sensitivity of 71% (95% confidence interval [CI], 69%-74%) and 87% (95% CI, 86%-88%) was achieved for all classifications. The AUC in this study for all classifications combined was 0.93 (95% CI, 0.91-0.96). For image annotation, a maximal Dice coefficient (∼0.6) was achieved with a consensus threshold of 0.25. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the hypothesis that annotation of abnormalities in retinal images by ophthalmologically naive individuals is comparable to expert annotation. The highest AUC and agreement with expert annotation was achieved in the nonmasters with compulsory training group. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: The use of crowdsourcing as a technique for retinal image analysis may be comparable to expert graders and has the potential to deliver timely, accurate, and cost-effective image analysis.

This file includes the interview guides from the EPSRC-funded Charting the Digital Lifespan project [PI: Moncur. EPSRC Reference EP/L00383X/1]. This project investigated digital personhood and digital experience at the life transitions of leaving secondary school, becoming a parent, and retiring from work in the UK. This file contains three Interview guides, used to structure interviews with individuals at each life transition point. The guides set out questions and also notes (including types of internet activity to ask interviewees about) and were used between December 2013 and December 2014. Individuals interested in similar topics may feel free to use the interview guides as a starting point for developing their own interviews, or to use questions contained herein as part of their own interview guide or questionnaire. The broad topics covered by these interview guides include, at each life transition: enablement through digital, digital social norms, privacy and security, permanence of data, devices and platforms, nostalgia, modes of communication, expressions of self, digital literacy, time online, media forms, and physical and digital links.
