O artigo examina três práticas psicanalíticas – a casuística, a escuta e a rememoração – que podem ter efeitos anticoloniais e desafiar o universalismo europeu. Enquanto a casuística permite considerar uma particularidade cultural irredutível às pretensões universalistas do Ocidente, a escuta atribui um lugar de sujeito para aqueles que eram vistos tradicionalmente como objetos do saber europeu e a rememoração pode abrir um espaço para o presente do passado pré-colonial, subvertendo assim a temporalidade colonial com o seu presentismo a-histórico. A conclusão traça uma distinção entre a prática psicanalítica com seu potencial anticolonial e a metapsicologia freudiana que corresponde irremediavelmente a concepções europeias da subjetividade, propondo-se a estudar outras concepções, como as indígenas da América.

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a non-malignant disease, characterized by the production of wart-like growths in the respiratory tract, affecting both young people and adults (juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, JORRP, and adult-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, AORRP, respectively). Infection caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) is known as the main factor involved in RRP development. Complications of RRP may rarely occur, including lung involvement and malignant transformation. The present systematic review aimed to evaluate the prevalence of severe complications, such as lung involvement and lung tumor in JORRP and AORRP patients, and assess the role of HPV genotypes in the progression of disease severity following the guideline for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA Statement). A total of 378 studies were found on PubMed and Scopus using the following MESH terms: “recurrent respiratory papillomatosis and lung tumor” and “pulmonary tumor and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis”. Basing on inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 11 studies were included in the systematic review. We found a pooled prevalence of 8% (95% CI: 4–14%; I2: 87.5%) for lung involvement in RRP patients. In addition, we found a pooled risk difference of 5% in lung involvement between JORRP and AORRP (95% CI: −7–18%; I2: 85.6%, p-value: 0.41). Among patients with lung involvement, we observed a pooled prevalence of lung tumor of 4% (95% CI:1–7%; I2: 67.1%) and a pooled prevalence mortality for this group of 4% (95% CI:2–6%; I2: 0%). Overall, the positivity rate for HPV-6 and -11 in patients with RRP was 91%. Considering only cases with pulmonary involvement, the pooled prevalence for HPV-11 was 21% (95% CI: 5–45%; I2: 77.2%). Our results evidenced a low/middle risk of pulmonary involvement and lung tumor in JORRP and AORRP patients, with an increased risk for HPV-11-positive patients. Further studies should be performed to improve knowledge and adopt preventive measures to contrast the progression to severe diseases in RRP patients.

Abstract Manual dexterity is a key skill in motor development. There are conflicting studies on the influence of sports practice on this skill and on which type of sport trains this ability the most in youth. Manual dexterity is usually assessed with expensive and time-consuming tools not easily available to facilities such as schools or sports clubs. The aim of this study was to assess differences in manual dexterity performance between young basketball players, sportsmen, and non-sportsmen. A further aim was to analyze whether the coin rotation task was a reliable tool for assessing manual dexterity. Based on the characteristics of the sport, we hypothesized that basketball players had better manual dexterity performances. Seventy-eight participants were included in the study and categorized into “basketball”, “sports”, and “non-sports” groups. Manual dexterity was assessed with the grooved pegboard, the coin rotation task, and the handgrip tests. The basketball group showed better performance in all tests. The adaptability of seed metabolism to different environmental conditions represents a crucial aspect to understand the effects of climate change on plant populations in wild environments. Among the indicators of stress and repair in seeds, tocopherols and malondialdehyde have been related to membrane stability in seed deterioration. Alpine plants constitute an interesting system to understand stress response dynamics because of the relevant climate variations challenging seed viability in alpine environments. This study considered five accessions of Viscaria alpina seeds collected over five years, highlighting significant correlations between environmental parameters such as precipitations and temperature, and several indicators of the oxidative stress response. These provide new insights on how changes in indicators of the seed stress response can reflect annual variations in temperature and precipitations affecting their parental plants, with possible implications on the current understanding of seed persistence in alpine environments threatened by climate change and on the effects of seed storage.

In this contribution, the conservation status assessment of three vascular plants are presented according to IUCN categories and criteria. It includes the assessment of Oryza rhizomatis D.A.Vaughan and Saxifraga facchinii W.D.J.Koch at a global level and Helianthemum caput-felis Boiss. at a regional level.

Abstract Background Bronchoscopy is a useful technique adopted in the management of patients with COVID-19. 10–40% of COVID-19 survivors experience persistent symptoms. A comprehensive description of the utility and safety of bronchoscopy in the management of patients with COVID-19 sequelae is lacking. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of bronchoscopy in patients with suspected post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. Methods An observational, retrospective study was carried out in Italy. Patients requiring bronchoscopy for suspected COVID-19 sequelae were enrolled. Results 45 (21, 46.7%, female) patients were recruited. Bronchoscopy was more frequently indicated for patients with a previous critical disease. The most frequent indications were tracheal complications, mostly performed in patients who were hospitalized during the acute phase than treated at home (14, 48.3% VS. 1, 6.3%; p-value: 0.007) and persistent parenchymal infiltrates, more frequent in those treated at home (9, 56.3% VS. 5, 17.2%; p-value: 0.008). 3 (6.6%) patients after the first bronchoscopy required higher oxygen flow. Four patients were diagnosed with lung cancer. Conclusion Bronchoscopy is a useful and safe technique in patients with suspected post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. The severity of acute disease plays a role in the rate and indications of bronchoscopy. Endoscopic procedures were mostly performed for tracheal complications in critical, hospitalized patients and for persistent lung parenchymal infiltrates in mild-moderate infections treated at home.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a pathological condition of the respiratory system characterized by chronic airflow obstruction, associated with changes in the lung parenchyma (pulmonary emphysema), bronchi (chronic bronchitis) and bronchioles (small airways disease). In the last years, the importance of phenotyping and endotyping COPD patients has strongly emerged. Metabolomics refers to the study of metabolites (both intermediate or final products) and their biological processes in biomatrices. The application of metabolomics to respiratory diseases and, particularly, to COPD started more than one decade ago and since then the number of scientific publications on the topic has constantly grown. In respiratory diseases, metabolomic studies have focused on the detection of metabolites derived from biomatrices such as exhaled breath condensate, bronchoalveolar lavage, and also plasma, serum and urine. Mass Spectrometry and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy are powerful tools in the precise identification of potentially prognostic and treatment response biomarkers. The aim of this article was to comprehensively review the relevant literature regarding the applications of metabolomics in COPD, clarifying the potential clinical utility of the metabolomic profile from several biologic matrices in detecting biomarkers of disease and prognosis for COPD. Meanwhile, a complete description of the technological instruments and techniques currently adopted in the metabolomics research will be described.

Leprosy is a neglected disease sporadically reported in high-income countries. Skin lesion and peripheral nerve involvement represent most common manifestations. Mediastinal lymphadenopathy in the absence of superficial lymph nodes involvement is very rare. Atypical or rare clinical presentations of disease may delay diagnosis and therapy and cause potential life-threatening manifestations and disabilities. We describe the case of a 49-year-old Sinhalese man who was admitted to our hospital with a one-month history of peripheral neurological symptoms and skin lesions on lower limbs. CT scan showed the presence of mediastinal lymphadenopathies without lung parenchymal and superficial lymph nodes involvement. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration showed the presence of granulomas while skin biopsy revealed dermo-hypodermic granulomas with perineural lymphohistiocytic inflammatory reaction. Fite-Faraco staining demonstrated the presence of acid-fast bacilli in both lymph nodal and skin biopsy and polymerase chain reaction was positive for Mycobacterium leprae. Multibacillary leprosy was then diagnosed.

Background: Smoking habit is a common cause of pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH) and lung cancer and both diseases may coexist in the lung and share genetic alterations, such as V600E BRAF mutations. We collected a small series of three cases of PLCH-associated lung adenocarcinoma in order to evaluate the molecular setup in both components and underline the critical role of careful tissue selection for predictive molecular driver testing. Methods: Three cases of PLCH-associated adenocarcinoma were collected from consultation files. Clinical data from referring physicians and clinical data were obtained. The surgical biopsies were tested by immunohistochemistry and molecular analysis after separate dissection of adenocarcinoma cells and Langerhans histiocytes. Results: There were three active smoking men with a median age at diagnosis of 60.6 years. PLCH was disclosed at imaging during work-up for suspected lung cancer. Molecular analysis revealed KRAS (G12C and G13C) mutations in two cases and V600E BRAF mutation in one case of PLCH. Immunostaining with the V600E BRAF mutation specific primary antibody VE1 correctly recognized BRAF-mutated LCH. One case was wild-type in both diseases. Two similar cases were found in the literature, one of which showed a discrepant KRAS (G12D) mutation in adenocarcinoma and a V600E BRAF mutation in LCH; Conclusions: This case series of PLCH-associated adenocarcinoma underline the possibility to disclose identical genetic alterations in co-existing benign and malignant pathologies, then potentially creating erroneous interpretation of molecular analysis leading to inadequate therapeutic options in case of incorrect diagnostic recognition and inappropriate selection of both components through microdissection.

Abstract Etiological diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy represents a daily challenge. Endosonography (transesophageal and transbronchial ultrasound-guided needle aspiration) is the recommended technique in the first diagnostic work-up and in the mediastinal staging of lung cancer. Despite a good sensitivity, limited amount of collected tissue may hamper molecular assessment in advanced lung cancer and in the diagnosis of lymphoproliferative disorders, fibrotic sarcoidosis, and mycobacterial lymphadenitis. Cryobiopsy, a bronchoscopic technique based on cooling, crystallization, and subsequent collection of tissue, has been successfully employed in the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases. Cryoprobes provide larger amount of tissue than conventional bronchoscopic sampling tools and might potentially prevent the need for invasive surgical procedures. New applications of the technique (e.g., bronchoscopic diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions and mediastinal lymph nodes) have been recently described in few reports. In a recent issue of the Journal, Genova et al. described five patients who underwent endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) followed by ultrasound-guided transbronchial cryobiopsy of mediastinal lymphadenopathy for a suspected malignancy. The authors discussed about the potential added value of mediastinal cryobiopsy on a correct histopathological and molecular assessment in patients with malignancies. EBUS-cryobiopsy could be a promising technique in the diagnostic pathway of mediastinal lymphadenitis. However, cryobiopsy is now available only in few selected centres. The learning curve of the technique adapted to mediastinal ultrasound-guided sampling, the optimal sampling strategy, its true diagnostic accuracy in patients with malignant and benign diseases, as well as its safety, are still largely unclear. Mediastinal cryobiopsy could be complementary rather than alternative to conventional endosonography. Rapid on-site evaluation of EBUS-TBNA could guide subsequent sampling with cryoprobes in case of poor collection of biological material or in case of suspected lymphoproliferative disorders. Further studies should investigate its diagnostic yield, in comparison or in combination with conventional endosonography, in large cohorts of patients with malignant or benign mediastinal lymphadenopthies.

Abstract Background Sarcopenia gained importance in the evaluation of patients with chronic respiratory diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), since it may impact negatively on clinical outcomes. Aim Aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia, defined according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) 2019 definition, and to evaluate the prevalence of the single criteria that define the EWGSOP2 definition (muscle strength, muscle quantity and physical performance), in a cohort of consecutive patients with IPF prospectively followed up in 9 hospitals in Northern Italy between December 2018 and May 2021. Methods Enrolled patients underwent an extensive pulmonary and nutritional assessment, including bioelectrical impedance analysis, dynamometry and 4-m gait speed test, both at IPF diagnosis and at 6-month follow-up. Results Out of the 83 patients (81% males, mean age 72.5 years) with IPF at disease diagnosis enrolled in the study, 19 (22.9%) showed sarcopenia, including 2 (2.4%) with severe sarcopenia, 5 (6.0%) with confirmed sarcopenia and 12 (14.5%) with probable sarcopenia. Sarcopenia was associated with a significantly higher severity of the disease and sedentary lifestyle, while no differences were observed in regards to body mass index, history of weight loss and comorbidities between patients with and without sarcopenia. Out of the 64 patients without sarcopenia at baseline, 16 cases showed alteration of muscle quantity and/or physical performance. In the 51 patients with complete data at 6-month follow-up, there were no cases of severe sarcopenia, 1 case (2.0%) showed confirmed sarcopenia, while the prevalence of probable sarcopenia was 19.6% (10 cases). No differences in regards to antifibrotic treatment received and onset of gastrointestinal side effects were observed between patients with and without sarcopenia at follow-up. Conclusions The prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with IPF both at diagnosis and at 6-month follow-up was low but not negligible and was associated with higher severity of the disease and sedentary lifestyle. In IPF patients, a comprehensive diagnostic work-up including all the criteria defining the EWGSOP2 definition might be more useful than a series testing for prompt recognition of nutritional and physical performance abnormalities.

Niemann–Pick Disease (NPD) is a rare autosomal recessive disease belonging to lysosomal storage disorders. Three types of NPD have been described: NPD type A, B, and C. NPD type A and B are caused by mutations in the gene SMPD1 coding for sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 1, with a consequent lack of acid sphingomyelinase activity. These diseases have been thus classified as acid sphingomyelinase deficiencies (ASMDs). NPD type C is a neurologic disorder due to mutations in the genes NPC1 or NPC2, causing a defect of cholesterol trafficking and esterification. Although all three types of NPD can manifest with pulmonary involvement, lung disease occurs more frequently in NPD type B, typically with interstitial lung disease, recurrent pulmonary infections, and respiratory failure. In this sense, bronchoscopy with broncho-alveolar lavage or biopsy together with high-resolution computed tomography are fundamental diagnostic tools. Although several efforts have been made to find an effective therapy for NPD, to date, only limited therapeutic options are available. Enzyme replacement therapy with Olipudase α is the first and only approved disease-modifying therapy for patients with ASMD. A lung transplant and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are also described for ASMD in the literature. The only approved disease-modifying therapy in NPD type C is miglustat, a substrate-reduction treatment. The aim of this review was to delineate a state of the art on the genetic basis and lung involvement in NPD, focusing on clinical manifestations, radiologic and histopathologic characteristics of the disease, and available therapeutic options, with a gaze on future therapeutic strategies.

ObjectiveCardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is currently recommended for all patients undergoing lung resection with either respiratory comorbidities or functional limitations. The main parameter evaluated is oxygen consumption at peak (VO2peak). Patients with VO2peak above 20 ml/kg/min are classified as low risk surgical candidates. The aims of this study were to evaluate postoperative outcomes of low-risk patients, and to compare their outcomes with those of patients without pulmonary impairment at respiratory function testing.MethodsRetrospective monocentric observational study was designed, evaluating outcomes of patients undergoing lung resection at San Paolo University Hospital, Milan, Italy, between January 2016 and November 2021, preoperatively assessed by CPET, according to 2009 ERS/ESTS guidelines. All low-risk patients undergoing any extent surgical lung resection for pulmonary nodules were enrolled. Postoperative major cardiopulmonary complications or death, occurring within 30 days from surgery, were assessed. A case-control study was nested, matching 1:1 for type of surgery the cohort population with control patients without functional respiratory impairment consecutively undergoing surgery at the same centre in the study period.ResultsA total of 80 patients were enrolled: 40 subjects were preoperatively assessed by CPET and deemed at low risk, whereas 40 subjects represented the control group. Among the first, 4 patients (10%) developed major cardiopulmonary complications, and 1 patient (2.5%) died within 30 days from surgery. In the control group, 2 patients (5%) developed complications and none of the patients (0%) died. The differences in morbidity and mortality rates did not reach statistically significance. Instead, age, weight, BMI, smoking history, COPD incidence, surgical approach, FEV1, Tiffenau, DLCO and length of hospital stay resulted significantly different between the two groups. At a case-by-case analysis, CPET revealed a pathological pattern in each complicated patient, in spite of VO2peak above target for safe surgery.ConclusionsPostoperative outcomes of low-risk patients undergoing lung resections are comparable to those of patients without any pulmonary functional impairment; nonetheless the formers represent a dramatically different category of individuals from the latter and may harbour few patients with worse outcomes. CPET variables overall interpretation may add to the VO2peak in identifying higher risk patients, even in this subgroup.

Seed coating is commonly applied in agricultural seed industry to alleviate biotic and edaphic barriers and improve seed germination, seedling emergence and establishment. Recently, this seed enhancement technology has been tested and applied to seeds of native species for ecological restoration and conservation. This work presents a novel application of seed coating for the reintroduction of species with dust‐like seeds that render direct seeding and cultivation unfeasible. Here we have used seed coating on Lindernia procumbens (Krocker) Philcox (Linderniaceae), a threatened annual species of paddy fields. Lindernia procumbens seeds were encrusted to the surface of rice seeds that acted as carrier to spread the species along rice sowing. We first tested how two selected concentrations of binder affected L. procumbens germination, then we investigated sowing depth (i.e. surface level—light, and buried—darkness) effect. Rice encrusting is a feasible and valuable tool for preserving threatened species with tiny seeds, since binder did not limit L. procumbens germination. Light increased L. procumbens seedlings emergence compared to buried conditions. Although L. procumbens emergence was limited in a paddy field trial, we promoted the formation of a soil seed bank for the species. As such, this should not discourage the possibility to reintroduce rare species with tiny seeds in agroecosystems. This pioneering technique can be extended to ecological restoration, where there is an urgent need for new seed‐based approaches and seed‐coating technologies to improve seedling establishment and restoration efficacy. Thoracostomy and chest tube placement are key procedures in treating pleural diseases involving the accumulation of fluids (e.g., malignant effusions, serous fluid, pus, or blood) or air (pneumothorax) in the pleural cavity. Initially described by Hippocrates and refined through the centuries, chest drainage achieved a historical milestone in the 19th century with the creation of closed drainage systems to prevent the entry of air into the pleural space and reduce infection risk. The introduction of plastic materials and the Heimlich valve further revolutionized chest tube design and function. Technological advancements led to the availability of various chest tube designs (straight, angled, and pig-tail) and drainage systems, including PVC and silicone tubes with radiopaque stripes for better radiological visualization. Modern chest drainage units can incorporate smart digital systems that monitor and graphically report pleural pressure and evacuated fluid/air, improving patient outcomes. Suction application via wall systems or portable digital devices enhances drainage efficacy, although careful regulation is needed to avoid complications such as re-expansion pulmonary edema or prolonged air leak. To prevent recurrent effusion, particularly due to malignancy, pleurodesis agents can be applied through the chest tube. In cases of non-expandable lung, maintaining a long-term chest drain may be the most appropriate approach and procedures such as the placement of an indwelling pleural catheter can significantly improve quality of life. Continued innovations and rigorous training ensure that chest tube insertion remains a cornerstone of effective pleural disease management. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the historical evolution and modern advancements in pleural drainage. By addressing both current technologies and procedural outcomes, it serves as a valuable resource for healthcare professionals aiming to optimize pleural disease management and patient care. Disseminated tuberculosis is a rare form of tuberculosis that can cause severe illness if diagnosed and treated late. We present the case of a young Senegalese woman who had a miscarriage due to a pelvic inflammatory disease, followed by the development of a left pleural effusion. Despite laparoscopic findings and a salpinx biopsy that revealed necrotizing granulomas, only microbiological examinations of pleural biopsies revealed the final diagnosis of disseminated, drug-sensitive tuberculosis.

Abstract Background Haemoptysis is a challenging symptom that can be associated with potentially life-threatening medical conditions. Follow-up is key in these patients to promptly detect new or misdiagnosed pathologic findings. Few prospective studies have evaluated long-term prognostic outcomes in patients with haemoptysis. Furthermore, the role played by antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs on mortality and recurrence rates is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess mortality after 18 months of follow-up. Furthermore, the incidence of recurrence and the risk factors for recurrence and death were evaluated (including the role played by anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs). Methods Observational, prospective, multicentre, Italian study. Results 451/606 (74.4%) recruited patients with haemoptysis completed the 18 months follow-up. 22/604 (3.6%) diagnoses changed from baseline to the end of the follow-up. 83/604 (13.7%) patients died. In 52/83 (62.7%) patients, death was the outcome of the disease which caused haemoptysis at baseline. Only the diagnosis of lung neoplasm was associated with death (OR (95%CI): 38.2 (4.2–347.5); p-value: 0.0001). 166 recurrences were recorded in 103/604 (17%) patients. Abstract Background Complicated parapneumonic effusions and empyema represent advanced stages of pleural infections and are characterized by a high mortality. Medical thoracoscopy is a safe and minimally invasive endoscopic technique prescribed to treat severe pleural infections. However, only a few studies evaluated its success rate. A systematic review of observational studies was performed to assess the efficacy of medical thoracoscopy in patients with complicated parapneumonic effusions and empyema, as well as its predictive factors. Methods A search of the scientific evidence was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Articles describing observational studies on medical thoracoscopy in patients with parapneumonic effusions and empyema were selected. Results Eight studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled treatment success rate of thoracoscopy was 85% (95% CI 80.0–90.0%; I2: 61.8%) when used as first-line intervention or after failure of chest tube. The pooled complication rate was 9.0% (95% CI 6.0–14.0%; I2: 58.8%). A pooled difference of treatment success of 9.0% (95% CI 1.0–18.0%) was found when post-thoracoscopy intra-pleural fibrinolysis was prescribed. Pooled success rate was higher in cases with pleural fluid culture negativity (pooled difference: 14.0%; 95% CI 4.0–24.0%). Conclusions Medical thoracoscopy is effective and safe when prescribed for complicated parapneumonic effusions and empyema. Bacteriological negativity of pleural effusion specimens and administration of adjuvant intra-pleural fibrinolysis after the procedure are associated with a higher success rate.

Five species of wild Oryza (O. nivara, O. rufipogon, O. eichengeri, O. rhizomatis and O. granulata), including the endemic species O. rhizomatis, have been recorded in Sri Lanka. These species are facing continuous decline in their populations due to natural and anthropogenic processes, with habitat loss being the main threat. This study aimed to provide information on the distribution, the current status of ex situ and in situ conservation, and to identify high-priority species and sites of wild rice in Sri Lanka, in order to improve the effectiveness of conservation efforts. Occurrence records of Sri Lankan wild rice species were collected from literature, gene banks, and field surveys. The distribution of these species was mapped, and areas with high species richness were identified. A gap analysis was conducted to determine the high-priority areas and species for ex situ and in situ conservation. It was found that about 23% of the wild rice populations in Sri Lanka were within protected areas, and by expanding these protected areas by 1 km, an additional 22% of the populations located on the border of these areas could be effectively conserved. Our analysis also revealed that 62% of Sri Lankan wild rice populations were not represented in gene banks. The species-rich areas were found to be in only two districts (Polonnaruwa and Monaragala), and less than 50% of these areas were within protected areas. Based on these findings, O. rhizomatis, O. eichengeri, and O. rufipogon were identified as high-priority species for in situ conservation. Ex situ collections were also deemed necessary for O. granulata and O. rhizomatis to ensure diversity representation in gene banks.

Herbaria are an important source of data and material useful in many fields, including plant conservation. Seeds preserved in herbarium specimens may have the potential to germinate, although few studies focused on this topic. Here, the first systematic assessment of six techniques, including priming techniques and melatonin application, aimed at improving the germination of seeds from herbarium specimens is presented. Seed germination of 26 species common in Europe, some of which congeneric to extinct species, collected in herbaria and in the wild (20,549 seeds in total, including 19,509 from 297 herbarium specimens from 8 different herbaria) was tested with the following treatments: exogenous melatonin addition to the germination medium, priming with melatonin, osmopriming, hydropriming for 24 and 48 hours, standard soil, heat sterilization and gibberellins addition. More than 85% of the fresh seeds and 1% of the seeds collected in herbaria germinated, including seeds older than 50 years. Data show that treatment with exogenous melatonin had a positive effect on the germination of fresh seeds, but a negative effect on the germination of herbarium‐derived seeds. Furthermore, osmopriming treatment had a slightly positive effect on the germination of herbarium‐derived seeds. Osmopriming and exogenous melatonin addition seem to be promising techniques that need further investigation and improvement and might be useful for the development of an optimal germination protocol for old and herbarium‐derived seeds. The germination of seeds from herbaria could be an important tool in plant conservation, with the aim of reversing the extinction trend of many species through de‐extinction, safeguarding biodiversity, and genetic variability. This study provides preliminary data for the development of germination protocols, especially for old seeds of species of conservation interest, to maximise the chance of recovering lost genetic diversity and leading to the first de‐extinction ever.
