A quantum com puter makes light work of the maximum independent set problem

Interactions govern the flow of information and the formation of correlations between constituents of many-body quantum systems, dictating phases of matter found in nature and forms of entanglement generated in the laboratory. Typical interactions decay with distance and thus produce a network of connectivity governed by geometry-such as the crystalline structure of a material or the trapping sites of atoms in a quantum simulator

Using an ensemble of atoms in an optical cavity, we engineer a family of nonlocal Heisenberg Hamiltonians with continuously tunable anisotropy of the spin-spin couplings. We thus gain access to a rich phase diagram, including a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic Ising phase transition that manifests as a diverging magnetic susceptibility at the critical point. The susceptibility displays a symmetry between Ising interactions and $XY$ (spin-exchange) interactions of the opposite sign, which is indicative of the spatially extended atomic system behaving as a single collective spin. Images of the magnetization dynamics show that spin-exchange interactions protect the coherence of the collective spin, even against inhomogeneous fields that completely dephase the noninteracting and Ising systems. Our results underscore prospects for harnessing spin-exchange interactions to enhance the robustness of spin squeezing protocols.

Nonlocal light-mediated interactions between cold atoms coupled to the mode of an optical cavity present unique prospects for simulating the quantum dynamics of strongly-interacting many-body systems. In a recent publication, we introduced a tunable, nonlocal sparse spin network that can be engineered in near-term single-mode cavity QED platforms.1 In this companion paper, we study this spin network in detail and pedagogically review its basic dynamical properties, providing theoretical details and calculations that expand on the statements made in our original publication. We show that the network exhibits two distinct notions of emergent geometry - linear and treelike - that can be accessed using a single tunable parameter. In either of these two extreme limits, we find a succinct description of the resulting dynamics in terms of two distinct metrics on the network, encoding a notion of either linear or treelike distance between spins. We also show that the network can be mapped in these two extreme limits onto exactly solvable models: a linear Heisenberg spin chain in one limit, and a Dyson hierarchical model in the other. These observations highlight the essential role played by the geometry of the interaction structure in determining a system's dynamics, and raise prospects for novel studies of nonlocal and highly chaotic quantum dynamics in near-term experiments.

We report on the realization of long-range Ising interactions in a cold gas of cesium atoms by Rydberg dressing. The interactions are enhanced by coupling to Rydberg states in the vicinity of a F\"{o}rster resonance. We characterize the interactions by measuring the mean-field shift of the clock transition via Ramsey spectroscopy, observing one-axis twisting dynamics. We furthermore emulate a transverse-field Ising model by periodic application of a microwave field and detect dynamical signatures of the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition. Numerous conceptually important quantum algorithms rely on a black-box device known as an oracle, which is typically difficult to construct without knowing the answer to the problem that the algorithm is intended to solve. A notable example is Grover's search algorithm. Here we propose a Grover search for solutions to a class of NP-complete decision problems known as subset sum problems, including the special case of number partitioning. Each problem instance is encoded in the couplings of a set of qubits to a central spin or boson, which enables a realization of the oracle without knowledge of the solution. The algorithm provides a quantum speedup across a known phase transition in the computational complexity of the partition problem, and we identify signatures of the phase transition in the simulated performance. Whereas the naive implementation of our algorithm requires a spectral resolution that scales exponentially with system size for NP-complete problems, we also present a recursive algorithm that enables scalability. Rydberg dressing provides optically controllable interactions between neutral atoms, of interest for generating many-body entanglement. We demonstrate these interactions and emulate transverse-field Ising dynamics in a cold gas of cesium atoms.

We show that a class of random all-to-all spin models, realizable in systems of atoms coupled to an optical cavity, gives rise to a rich dynamical phase diagram due to the pairwise separable nature of the couplings. By controlling the experimental parameters, one can tune between integrable and chaotic dynamics on the one hand, and between classical and quantum regimes on the other hand. For two special values of a spin-anisotropy parameter, the model exhibits rational-Gaudin type integrability and it is characterized by an extensive set of spin-bilinear integrals of motion, independent of the spin size. More generically, we find a novel integrable structure with conserved charges that are not purely bilinear. Instead, they develop `dressing tails' of higher-body terms, reminiscent of the dressed local integrals of motion found in Many-Body Localized phases. Surprisingly, this new type of integrable dynamics found in finite-size spin-1/2 systems disappears in the large-$S$ limit, giving way to classical chaos. We propose an experimentally realizable quantum spin model that exhibits fast scrambling, based on non-local interactions which couple sites whose separation is a power of 2. By controlling the relative strengths of deterministic, non-random couplings, we can continuously tune from the linear geometry of a nearest-neighbor spin chain to an ultrametric geometry in which the effective distance between spins is governed by their positions on a tree graph. The transition in geometry can be observed in quench dynamics, and is furthermore manifest in calculations of the entanglement entropy. Between the linear and treelike regimes, we find a peak in entanglement and exponentially fast spreading of quantum information across the system. We report direct observations of photon-mediated spin-exchange interactions in an atomic ensemble. Interactions extending over a distance of 500 microns are generated within a cloud of cold rubidium atoms coupled to a single mode of light in an optical resonator. We characterize the system via quench dynamics and imaging of the local magnetization, verifying the coherence of the interactions and demonstrating optical control of their strength and sign. Furthermore, by initializing the spin-1 system in the mF = 0 Zeeman state, we observe correlated pair creation in the mF = +/- 1 states, a process analogous to spontaneous parametric down-conversion and to spin mixing in Bose-Einstein condensates. Our work opens new opportunities in quantum simulation with long-range interactions and in entanglement-enhanced metrology.

Quantum simulators are a promising technology on the spectrum of quantum devices from specialized quantum experiments to universal quantum computers. These quantum devices utilize entanglement and many-particle behaviors to explore and solve hard scientific, engineering, and computational problems. Rapid development over the last two decades has produced more than 300 quantum simulators in operation worldwide using a wide variety of experimental platforms. Recent advances in several physical architectures promise a golden age of quantum simulators ranging from highly optimized special purpose simulators to flexible programmable devices. These developments have enabled a convergence of ideas drawn from fundamental physics, computer science, and device engineering. They have strong potential to address problems of societal importance, ranging from understanding vital chemical processes, to enabling the design of new materials with enhanced performance, to solving complex computational problems. It is the position of the community, as represented by participants of the NSF workshop on "Programmable Quantum Simulators," that investment in a national quantum simulator program is a high priority in order to accelerate the progress in this field and to result in the first practical applications of quantum machines. Such a program should address two areas of emphasis: (1) support for creating quantum simulator prototypes usable by the broader scientific community, complementary to the present universal quantum computer effort in industry; and (2) support for fundamental research carried out by a blend of multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary collaborations with resources for quantum simulator software, hardware, and education., Comment: 41 pages -- references and acknowledgments added in v2

We propose a robust scheme for generating macroscopic superposition states of spin or motion with the aid of a single photon. Shaping the wave packet of the photon enables high-fidelity preparation of non-classical states of matter even in the presence of photon loss. Success is heralded by photodetection, enabling the scheme to be implemented with a weak coherent field. We analyze applications to preparing Schr\"{o}dinger cat states of a collective atomic spin or of a mechanical oscillator coupled to an optical resonator. The method generalizes to preparing arbitrary superpositions of coherent states, enabling full quantum control. We illustrate this versatility by showing how to prepare Dicke or Fock states, as well as superpositions in the Dicke or Fock basis.

Report of the first workshop to identify approaches and techniques in the domain of quantum sensing that can be utilized by future High Energy Physics applications to further the scientific goals of High Energy Physics.

Well-timed kicks to an ion's momentum enable better position measurements

We study the production of photons in a model of three bosonic atomic modes non-linearly coupled to a cavity mode. In absence of external driving and dissipation, the energy levels at different photon numbers assemble into the steps of an energy staircase which can be employed as guidance for preparing multi-photon states. We consider adiabatic photon production, driving the system through a sequence of Landau-Zener transitions in the presence of external coherent light pumping. We also analyse the non-equilibrium dynamics of the system resulting from the competition of the sudden switch of coherent photon pumping and cavity photon losses, and we find that the system approaches a plateau with a given number of photons, which becomes metastable upon increasing the rate of photon pumping. We discuss the sensitivity of the time scales for the onset of this metastable behaviour to system parameters and predict the value of photons attained, solving the driven-dissipative dynamics including three-body correlations between light and matter degrees of freedom., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The strong light-matter coupling attainable in optical cavities enables the generation of highly squeezed states of atomic ensembles. It was shown in [Phys. Rev. A 66, 022314 (2002)] how an effective one-axis twisting Hamiltonian can be realized in a cavity setup. Here, we extend this work and show how an effective two-axis twisting Hamiltonian can be realized in a similar cavity setup. We compare the two schemes in order to characterize their advantages. In the absence of decoherence, the two-axis Hamiltonian leads to more squeezing than the one-axis Hamiltonian. If limited by decoherence from spontaneous emission and cavity decay, we find roughly the same level of squeezing for the two schemes scaling as (NC)^(1/2) where C is the single atom cooperativity and N is the total number of atoms. When compared to an ideal squeezing operation, we find that for specific initial states, a dissipative version of the one-axis scheme attains higher fidelity than the unitary one-axis scheme or the two-axis scheme. Detection noise poses a challenge for achieving Heisenberg-limited phase estimation. We discuss a "twisting echo" protocol1 that addresses this problem by using interactions to amplify a spectroscopic signal. The echo protocol enables phase sensitivity near the Heisenberg limit while permitting detection noise on the order of the quantum noise of an unentangled state. For comparison with conventional schemes requiring direct detection of entangled states, we calculate the dependence of metrological gain on detection noise in Ramsey spectroscopy with squeezed, twin Fock, and GHZ states. The twisting echo outperforms all of these alternatives if the detection uncertainty is at or above the single-atom level.

We propose and analyze two distinct routes toward realizing interacting symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases via periodic driving. First, we demonstrate that a driven transverse-field Ising model can be used to engineer complex interactions which enable the emulation of an equilibrium SPT phase. This phase remains stable only within a parametric time scale controlled by the driving frequency, beyond which its topological features break down. To overcome this issue, we consider an alternate route based upon realizing an intrinsically Floquet SPT phase that does not have any equilibrium analog. In both cases, we show that disorder, leading to many-body localization, prevents runaway heating and enables the observation of coherent quantum dynamics at high energy densities. Furthermore, we clarify the distinction between the equilibrium and Floquet SPT phases by identifying a unique micromotion-based entanglement spectrum signature of the latter. We provide a protocol to measure out-of-time-order correlation functions. These correlation functions are of theoretical interest for diagnosing the scrambling of quantum information in black holes and strongly interacting quantum systems generally. Measuring them requires an echo-type sequence in which the sign of a many-body Hamiltonian is reversed. We detail an implementation employing cold atoms and cavity quantum electrodynamics to realize the chaotic kicked top model, and we analyze effects of dissipation to verify its feasibility with current technology. We propose an approach to quantum phase estimation that can attain precision near the Heisenberg limit without requiring single-particle-resolved state detection. We show that the "one-axis twisting" interaction, well known for generating spin squeezing in atomic ensembles, can also amplify the output signal of an entanglement-enhanced interferometer to facilitate readout. Applying this interaction-based readout to oversqueezed, non-Gaussian states yields a Heisenberg scaling in phase sensitivity, which persists in the presence of detection noise as large as the quantum projection noise of an unentangled ensemble. Topology and geometry are essential to our understanding of modern physics, underlying many foundational concepts from high energy theories, quantum information, and condensed matter physics. In condensed matter systems, a wide range of phenomena stem from the geometry of the band eigenstates, which is encoded in the matrix-valued Wilson line for general multi-band systems. Using an ultracold gas of Rb atoms loaded in a honeycomb optical lattice, we realize strong-force dynamics in Bloch bands that are described by Wilson lines and observe an evolution in the band populations that directly reveals the band geometry. The 10 B(α,n) 13 N reaction is studied as an activation process in a variety of solid boron-containing neutron shielding materials. The source of α-particles is the neutron capture reaction 10 B(n,α) 7 Li. Samples of boron carbide, boron oxide, and boron nitride are irradiated with thermal neutrons and the rate of 13 N production is determined. 13 N promptly decays, emitting a positron. This positron efficiently annihilates with electrons in the material and the resultant 511 keV gamma ray is detected. For each of the above-mentioned materials, the rate of 13 N production is (1–2) × 10 −10 per captured neutron.

The geometric structure of an energy band in a solid is fundamental for a wide range of many-body phenomena in condensed matter and is uniquely characterized by the distribution of Berry curvature over the Brillouin zone. In analogy to an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer that measures the magnetic flux penetrating a given area in real space, we realize an atomic interferometer to measure Berry flux in momentum space. We demonstrate the interferometer for a graphene-type hexagonal lattice, where it has allowed us to directly detect the singular $\pi$ Berry flux localized at each Dirac point. We show that the interferometer enables one to determine the distribution of Berry curvature with high momentum resolution. Our work forms the basis for a general framework to fully characterize topological band structures and can also facilitate holonomic quantum computing through controlled exploitation of the geometry of Hilbert space., Comment: 5+5 pages

We introduce an all-optical approach to producing high-flux synthetic magnetic fields for neutral atoms or molecules by designing intrinsically time-periodic optical superlattices. A single laser source, modulated to generate two frequencies, suffices to create dynamically modulated interference patterns which have topological Floquet energy bands. In particular, we propose a simple laser setup that realizes a tight-binding model with uniform flux per plaquette and well-separated Chern bands. Researchers characterize a single-photon source, proving it emits nonclassical states of light that may be useful for quantum communication schemes.

We propose and analyze a probabilistic but heralded scheme to generate pure, entangled, non-Gaussian states of collective spin in large atomic ensembles by means of single-photon detection. One photon announces the preparation of a Dicke state, while two or more photons announce Schr\"odinger cat states. The method produces pure states even for finite photon detection efficiency and weak atom-photon coupling. The entanglement generation can be made quasi-deterministic by means of repeated trial and feedback, enabling metrology beyond the standard quantum limit., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Deterministic light-induced spin squeezing in an atomic gas is limited by photon shot noise or, equivalently, by atomic state information escaping with the light field mediating the effective atom-atom interaction. We show theoretically that the performance of cavity spin squeezing [M.H. Schleier-Smith, I.D. Leroux, and V. Vuleti\'{c}, Phys. Rev. For mesoscopic ensembles containing 100 or more atoms we measure the total atom number and the number of atoms in a specific hyperfine state with single-atom resolution. The measurement detects the atom-induced shift of the resonance frequency of an optical cavity containing the ensemble. We demonstrate cavity sideband cooling of a single collective motional mode of an atomic ensemble down to a mean phonon occupation number of 2.0(-0.3/+0.9). Both this minimum occupation number and the observed cooling rate are in good agreement with an optomechanical model. The cooling rate constant is proportional to the total photon scattering rate by the ensemble, demonstrating the cooperative character of the light-emission-induced cooling process. Many effects in the interaction between atoms and a cavity that are usually described in quantum mechanical terms (cavity quantum electrodynamics, cavity QED) can be understood and quantitatively analyzed within a classical framework. We adopt such a classical picture of a radiating dipole oscillator to derive explicit expressions for the coupling of single atoms and atomic ensembles to Gaussian modes in free space and in an optical resonator. The cooperativity parameter of cavity QED is shown to play a central role and is given a geometrical interpretation. The classical analysis yields transparent, intuitive results that are useful for analyzing applications of cavity QED such as atom detection and counting, cavity cooling, cavity spin squeezing, cavity spin optomechanics, or phase transitions associated with the self-organization of the ensemble-light system.

We study experimentally the lifetime of a special class of entangled states in an atomic clock, squeezed spin states. In the presence of anisotropic noise, their lifetime is strongly dependent on squeezing orientation. We measure the Allan deviation spectrum of a clock operated with a phase-squeezed input state. For integration times up to 50 s the squeezed clock achieves a given precision 2.8(3) times faster than a clock operating at the standard quantum limit., 4 pages, 3 figures

Atomic clocks have reached the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) of precision, 1 set by the projection noise inherent in measurements on uncorrelated atoms. It is possible to overcome this limit by entangling the atoms to generate a “squeezed state” of the atomic ensemble. We use the collective interaction of an atomic ensemble with a far-detuned light field in an optical resonator to prepare squeezed states by two different methods: quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement and Hamiltonian evolution. We apply both methods to an ensemble of 5 × 10 48 7 Rb atoms in a superposition of hyperfine clock states. We measure the suppression of projection noise and compare it to the accompanying reduction in signal, thereby quantifying the net gain in spectroscopic sensitivity. By QND measurement, with resolution up to 9 dB below the projection noise level, we achieve 3.0(8) dB of metrologically relevant squeezing. Whereas the measurement-based approach relies on knowledge of the (randomly distributed) measurement outcome to produce a conditionally squeezed state, the method of Hamiltonian evolution produces a known squeezed state independent of detector performance. We mimic the dynamics of the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian, proposed as a generator of squeezed states by Kitagawa and Ueda, 2 by using the atom-induced frequency shift of the resonator mode and the corresponding resonator-field-induced shift of the atomic transition frequency to introduce an effective interaction among the atoms. The resulting deterministic squeezing is sufficient to allow a 6.0(4) dB improvement in spectroscopic sensitivity over the SQL.

We generate input states with reduced quantum uncertainty (spin-squeezed states) for a hyperfine atomic clock by collectively coupling an ensemble of laser-cooled and trapped 87Rb atoms to an optical resonator. A quantum nondemolition measurement of the population difference between the two clock states with far-detuned light produces an entangled state whose projection noise is reduced by as much as 9.4(8) dB below the standard quantum limit (SQL) for uncorrelated atoms. When the observed decoherence is taken into account, we attain 4.2(8) dB of spin squeezing, confirming entanglement, and 3.2(8) dB of improvement in clock precision over the SQL. The method holds promise for improving the performance of optical-frequency clocks.

Spin squeezing, the generation of collective states of atomic ensembles with reduced spin noise by exploiting non-classical correlations between particles, is a promising approach to overcoming the standard quantum limit set by projection noise of independent atoms. We squeeze unconditionally the collective spin of a dilute ensemble of laser-cooled rubidium-87 atoms using their interaction with a driven optical resonator. The shape and size of the resulting spin uncertainty region are well described by a simple analytical model [M.H.S., I.D.L., V.V., arXiv:0911.3936] through two orders of magnitude in the effective interaction strength, without free parameters. We propose and analyze a simple method to squeeze dynamically and unconditionally the collective spin of a dilute atomic ensemble by interaction with a driven mode of an optical resonator, as recently demonstrated [I. D. L., M. H. S., and V. V., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 073602 (2010)]. We show that substantial squeezing can be achieved in the regime of strong collective ensemble-resonator coupling. The squeezing is ultimately limited either by photon emission into free space or by the curvature of the Bloch sphere. We generate entangled states of an ensemble of 5*10^4 rubidium-87 atoms by optical quantum nondemolition measurement. The resonator-enhanced measurement leaves the atomic ensemble, prepared in a superposition of hyperfine clock levels, in a squeezed spin state. Magnetic microtraps for ultracold atoms combine tight confinement, long storage times, high degree of control over the atomic position, and good optical access. Atom detection can be implemented via fluorescence, absorption, or dispersive measurements. All three types of measurements can be enhanced by an optical resonator, where the enhancement factor is proportional to the resonator finesse F. In the limit of negligible detector counts, in a setup where the detector registers n counts per atom in a fluorescence measurement, the atom number resolution is DeltaNf= (N/n)1/2 for a fluorescence measurement, and DeltaNa= (1/4N)1/2 for an absorption measurement. This means that absorption and fluorescence measurements perform similarly for one atom, but that the absorption measurement is superior for N >1. However, in absorption measurements the number of atoms must remain sufficiently small for the atomic absorption not to deteriorate the resonator finesse. Larger samples can be probed by dispersive measurements, where the tuning of the resonator due to the atomic index of refraction is measured. In the absence of technical noise, the corresponding atom number resolution is independent of detuning from the atomic transition, and given by DeltaNd= (1/n)1/2 . Using fluorescence detection in a resonator of finesse F=8000, we detect two counts per atom in 250 mus, enabling single-atom detection with 75% efficiency (Teper et al., 2006). Absorption detection with 3.3% transmission attenuation enables us to measure small samples with up to 10 atoms with a resolution of about one atom. Absorptive and dispersive detection are interesting in that the resolution is not decreased with higher atom number. The reason is that both rely on the forward scattered signal, where the fields emitted by different atoms add coherently. These methods therefore allow non-destructive measurements below the atom-number shot noise, provided that the optical depth of the sample exceeds unity. We have realized an optical depth of several thousand inside the resonator, which should enable trapped-atom detection significantly below the shot-noise limit. If the detection is applied in a state-selective manner to a sample of two-level atoms (Geremia et al., 2004), conditional spin squeezing results. Such squeezing of the pseudo-spin for an atomic clock transition can be used to realize a hyperfine atomic clock on a microchip (Treutlin et al., 2004) that operates below the atom number shot noise limit (standard quantum limit). We report experimental progress towards pseudo-spin squeezing for 87Rb atoms trapped on the microchip.
