The two-dimensional rare-earth tri-tellurides undergo a unidirectional charge-density-wave (CDW) transition at high temperature and, for the heaviest members of the series, a bidirectional one at low temperature. Raman scattering experiments as a function of temperature on DyTe$_3$ and on LaTe$_3$ at 6 GPa provide a clear-cut evidence for the emergence of the respective collective CDW amplitude excitations. In the unidirectional CDW phase, we surprisingly discover that the amplitude mode develops as a succession of two mean-field, BCS-like transitions in different temperature ranges.

The low-temperature transport coefficients of the degenerate periodic SU(N) Anderson model are calculated in the limit of infinite correlation between {\it f} electrons, within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. We establish the Fermi liquid (FL) laws in the clean limit, taking into account the quasiparticle damping. The latter yields a reduced value of the Lorenz number in the Wiedemann-Franz law. Our results indicate that the renormalization of the thermal conductivity and of the Seebeck coefficient can lead to a substantial enhancement of the electronic thermoelectric figure-of-merit at low temperature. Using the FL laws we discuss the low-temperature anomalies that show up in the electrical resistance of the intermetallic compounds with Cerium and Ytterbium ions, when studied as a function of pressure. Our calculations explain the sharp maximum of the coefficient of the $T^2$-term of the electrical resistance and the rapid variation of residual resistance found in a number of Ce and Yb intermetallics at some critical pressure., Comment: 14 pages

We report on a Raman scattering investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW), quasi two-dimensional rare-earth tri-tellurides $R$Te$_3$ ($R$= La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy) at ambient pressure, and of LaTe$_3$ and CeTe$_3$ under externally applied pressure. The observed phonon peaks can be ascribed to the Raman active modes for both the undistorted as well as the distorted lattice in the CDW state by means of a first principles calculation. The latter also predicts the Kohn anomaly in the phonon dispersion, driving the CDW transition. The integrated intensity of the two most prominent modes scales as a characteristic power of the CDW-gap amplitude upon compressing the lattice, which provides clear evidence for the tight coupling between the CDW condensate and the vibrational modes.

We report the results of a $^{63,65}$Cu NMR/NQR study probing the intermetallic compound PrCu$_2$. The previously claimed onset of magnetic order at 65 K, indicated in a $\mu$SR study, is not confirmed. Based on our data we discuss different possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy, including a non negligible influence of the implanted muons on their environment. Competing dipolar and quadrupolar interactions lead to unusual features of the magnetic-ion/conduction-electron system, different from those of common intermetallics exhibiting structural or magnetic instabilities., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys Rev B

A technique allowing for a perturbative treatment of nonlocal corrections to the single-site dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in finite dimensions is developed. It is based on the observation that in the case of strong electron correlation the one-electron Green's function is strongly spatially damped so that its intersite matrix elements may be considered as small perturbations. Because the non-local corrections are at least quadratic in these matrix elements, DMFT in such cases may be a very accurate approximation in dimensions d = 1-3. This observation provides a rigorous justification for the application of DMFT to physical systems. Furthermore, the technique allows for a systematic evaluation of the nonlocal corrections. This is illustrated with the calculation of the magnetic short range order parameter for nearest neighbor spins in the half filled Hubbard model on the square lattice in its insulating phase which exhibits an excellent agreement with the results of a recent cluster approach.As a second example we study the lowest order correction to the DMFT self-energy and its influence on the local density of states., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures new section on causality issue; new Appendix on perturbative expansion of spectral functions

A number of recent experiments report the low-temperature thermopower $\alpha$ and specific heat coefficients $\gamma=C_V/T$ of strongly correlated electron systems. Describing the charge and heat transport in a thermoelectric by transport equations, and assuming that the charge current and the heat current densities are proportional to the number density of the charge carriers, we obtain a simple mean-field relationship between $\alpha$ and the entropy density $\cal S$ of the charge carriers. We discuss corrections to this mean-field formula and use results obtained for the periodic Anderson and the Falicov-Kimball models to explain the concentration (chemical pressure) and temperature dependence of $\alpha/\gamma T$ in EuCu$_2$(Ge$_{1-x}$Si$_x$)$_2$, CePt$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$, and YbIn$_{1-x}$Ag${_x}$Cu$_4$ intermetallic compounds. % We also show, using the 'poor man's mapping' which approximates the periodic Anderson lattice by the single impurity Anderson model, that the seemingly complicated behavior of $\alpha(T)$ can be explained in simple terms and that the temperature dependence of $\alpha(T)$ at each doping level is consistent with the magnetic character of 4{\it f} ions., Comment: 11 pages

The evolution of the thermopower EuCu{2}(Ge{1-x}Si{x}){2} intermetallics, which is induced by the Si-Ge substitution, is explained by the Kondo scattering of conduction electrons on the Eu ions which fluctuate between the magnetic 2+ and non-magnetic 3+ Hund's rule configurations. The Si-Ge substitution is equivalent to chemical pressure which modifies the coupling and the relative occupation of the {\it f} and conduction states., Comment: 2 pages, Proceedings of the SCES 2005 confernece. The thermoelectric properties of intermetallic compounds with Ce or Yb ions are explained by the single-impurity Anderson model which takes into account the crystal-field splitting of the 4{\it f} ground-state multiplet, and assumes a strong Coulomb repulsion which restricts the number of {\it f} electrons or {\it f} holes to $n_f\leq 1$ for Ce and $n_f^{hole}\leq 1$ for Yb ions. Using the non-crossing approximation and imposing the charge neutrality constraint on the local scattering problem at each temperature and pressure, the excitation spectrum and the transport coefficients of the model are obtained. The thermopower calculated in such a way exhibits all the characteristic features observed in Ce and Yb intermetallics. Calculating the effect of pressure on various characteristic energy scales of the model, we obtain the $(T,p)$ phase diagram which agrees with the experimental data on CeRu$_{2}$Si$_2$, CeCu$_{2}$Si$_2$, CePd$_{2}$Si$_2$, and similar compounds. The evolution of the thermopower and the electrical resistance as a function of temperature, pressure or doping is explained in terms of the crossovers between various fixed points of the model and the redistribution of the single-particle spectral weight within the Fermi window., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The pressure-induced changes in the temperature-dependent thermopower S(T) and electrical resistivity \rho(T) of CeRu_2Ge_2 are described within the single-site Anderson model. The Ce-ions are treated as impurities and the coherent scattering on different Ce-sites is neglected. Changing the hybridisation \Gamma between the 4f-states and the conduction band accounts for the pressure effect. The transport coefficients are calculated in the non-crossing approximation above the phase boundary line. The theoretical S(T) and \rho(T) curves show many features of the experimental data. The seemingly complicated temperature dependence of S(T) and \rho(T), and their evolution as a function of pressure, is related to the crossovers between various fixed points of the model., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

EuB$_6$ is a magnetic semiconductor in which defects introduce charge carriers into the conduction band with the Fermi energy varying with temperature and magnetic field. We present experimental and theoretical work on the electronic magnetotransport in single-crystalline EuB$_6$. Magnetization, magnetoresistance and Hall effect data were recorded at temperatures between 2 and 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 5.5 T. The negative magnetoresistance is well reproduced by a model in which the spin disorder scattering is reduced by the applied magnetic field. The Hall effect can be separated into an ordinary and an anomalous part. At 20 K the latter accounts for half of the observed Hall voltage, and its importance decreases rapidly with increasing temperature. As for Gd and its compounds, where the rare-earth ion adopts the same Hund's rule ground state as Eu$^{2+}$ in EuB$_{6}$, the standard antisymmetric scattering mechanisms underestimate the $size$ of this contribution by several orders of magnitude, while reproducing its $shape$ almost perfectly. Well below the bulk ferromagnetic ordering at $T_C$ = 12.5 K, a two-band model successfully describes the magnetotransport. Our description is consistent with published de Haas van Alphen, optical reflectivity, angular-resolved photoemission, and soft X-ray emission as well as absorption data, but requires a new interpretation for the gap feature deduced from the latter two experiments., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, submitted to PRB

The formation energy and local magnetic moment of a series of point defects in CaB$_6 $ are computed using a supercell approach within the generalized gradient approximation to density functional theory. Based on these results, speculations are made as to the influence of these defects on electrical transport. It is found that the substitution of Ca by La does not lead to the formation of a local moment, while a neutral B$_6 $ vacancy carries a moment of 2.4 Bohr magnetons, mostly distributed over the six nearest-neighbour B atoms. A plausible mechanism for the ferromagnetic ordering of these moments is suggested. Since the same broken B-B bonds appear on the preferred (100) cleavage planes of the CaB$_6$ structure, it is argued that internal surfaces in polycrystals as well as external surfaces in general will make a large contribution to the observed magnetization., Comment: Calculated defect formation energies had to be corrected, due to the use of a wrong reference energy for the perfect crystal in the original paper

We report on measurements of the specific heat of the recently discovered superconductor MgB$_2$ in the temperature range between 3 and 220 K. Based on a modified Debye-Einstein model, we have achieved a rather accurate account of the lattice contribution to the specific heat, which allows us to separate the electronic contribution from the total measured specific heat. From our result for the electronic specific heat, we estimate the electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$ to be of the order of 2, significantly enhanced compared to common weak-coupling values $\leq 0.4$. Our data also indicate that the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state of MgB$_2$ can be accounted for by a conventional, s-wave type BCS-model., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
