Abstract

Smartphone sensors are used increasingly in the assessment of ataxias. To date, there is no specific consensus guidance regarding a priority set of smartphone sensor measurements, or standard assessment criteria that are appropriate for clinical trials. As part of the Ataxia Global Initiative Digital-Motor Biomarkers Working Group (AGI WG4), aimed at evaluating key ataxia clinical domains (gait/posture, upper limb, speech and oculomotor assessments), we provide consensus guidance for use of internal smartphone sensors to assess key domains. Guidance was developed by means of a literature review and a two stage Delphi study conducted by an Expert panel, which surveyed members of AGI WG4, representing clinical, research, industry and patient-led experts, and consensus meetings by the Expert panel to agree on standard criteria and map current literature to these criteria. Seven publications were identified that investigated ataxias using internal smartphone sensors. The Delphi 1 survey ascertained current practice, and systems in use or under development. Wide variations in smartphones sensor use for assessing ataxia were identified. The Delphi 2 survey identified seven measures that were strongly endorsed as priorities in assessing 3/4 domains, namely gait/posture, upper limb, and speech performance. The Expert panel recommended 15 standard criteria to be fulfilled in studies. Evaluation of current literature revealed that none of the studies met all criteria, with most being early-phase validation studies. Our guidance highlights the importance of consensus, identifies priority measures and standard criteria, and will encourage further research into the use of internal smartphone sensors to measure ataxia digital-motor biomarkers.

Abstract

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is an important tool to reduce loneliness among older adults. One possibility for introducing them to ICT is via digital games (DG). To evaluate the effects of practicing DG during computer classes on loneliness among individuals older than 50 years. Longitudinal study, in which data from 36 students of an aging care center (72.22% female), aged between 51 and 87 years old (mean = 62.47 years old), enrolled in computer classes for beginners were analysed. Four games were used during intervention: Coincident Timing, Motor Skill Analyser, Labyrinth and Fitts. A characterization questionnaire and the short version of the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S), which comprises romantic, familial and social loneliness, were used. The statistical analysis compared the evolution in loneliness between three moments of data collection. The test ANOVA for repeated measures indicated differences between the moments of data collection for Romantic loneliness (F (1.64, 57.31) = 6.75, p = 0.004) and Friedman test for Familial loneliness (X.sup.2 = 21.46, p < 0.001) and SELSA-S total (X.sup.2 = 7.35, p = 0.025). No change was observed for Social loneliness. There was an increase in Romantic loneliness and a decrease in Familial loneliness along the three moment of data collection. Abstract

Introduction: People with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) present motor alterations which can impact daily life tasks that require speed and/or accuracy of movement. Objective: A sub analysis of NCT01439022, aiming to estimate the extent to which two different exercise training protocols (global and handwriting upper limb exercise training) impact reaction time, travel speed, and accuracy in PwPD. Methods: Seventy PwPD, right-side dominant were randomised 1:1 into two six-month training protocol groups; 35 PwPD performed global exercise training and 35 performed specific training (handwriting upper limb exercise movements). Assessments of speed-accuracy and trade-off were carried out at baseline, after 3 and 6 months of training, and at a 12-month follow-up. The current study used data from a previous publication of a randomised controlled trial that included a 6-month self-managed community exercise programme for PwPD. For the present study we included only the participants who completed the Fitts' task during the baseline assessment. Results: In the upper limb assessments, no main effects were found for the number of touches, but the exercise group showed a marginal increase over time on the left side. Error averages on the left side decreased significantly for the exercise group from baseline to 6 and 12 months. The exercise group also presented a lower Error CoV and the Reaction Time CoV increased on the right side. Significant findings for Fitts r on the left side indicated lower values for the exercise group, with improvements continuing at 12 months. Conclusion: We report the potential of global exercise interventions to facilitate improvements in reaction time and travel speed, as well as other motor control metrics, with lasting effects at 12 months, particularly on the non-dominant side. Abstract

People with autism spectrum disorder could benefit from physical activity during the pandemic and COVID-19 restrictions, mainly to maintain adequate physical activity. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility, enjoyment, and potential effect of telerehabilitation using a serious game named 'MoveHero'. Registered in Clinical Trials (NCT04402034). We adopted a remotely run Telerehabilitation research design with 44 participants recruited: 22 People with ASD people and 22 non-ASD individuals. All participants safely participated, 100% adherence to sessions, ∼60% enjoying the task, and significantly improved performance, with better performance for the NA group at most practice moments. Our findings support both how to implement a gaming intervention and the need to investigate the efficacy of serious games to motivate moderate intensity physical activity in people with ASD. A new and thrilling way to promote physical activity is through telerehabilitation to people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Abstract

In the contemporary society a massive amount of data is generated continuously by various means, and they are called Big-Data sets. Big Data has potential and limits which need to be understood by statisticians and statistics consumers, therefore it is a challenge to develop Big-Data Literacy to support the needs of constructive, concerned, and reflective citizens. However, the development of the concept of statistical literacy mirrors the current gap between purely technical and socio-political characterizations of Big Data. In this paper, we review the recent history of the concept of statistical literacy and highlight the need to integrate the new challenges and critical issues from data science associated with Big Data, including ethics, epistemology, mathematical justification, and math washing.
