The aim of this Technical Design Report is to illustrate the technological choices foreseen to be implemented in the construction of the CYGNO-04 demonstrator, motivate them against the experiment physics goals of CYGNO-30 and demonstrate the financial sustainability of the project. CYGNO-04 represents PHASE 1 of the long term CYGNO roadmap, towards the development of large high precision tracking gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) for directional Dark Matter searches and solar neutrino spectroscopy. The CYGNO project1 peculiarities reside in the optical readout of the light produced during the amplification of the primary ionization electrons in a stack of triple Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs), thanks to the nice scintillation properties of the chosen He:CF4 gas mixture. To this aim, CYGNO is exploiting the fast progress in commercial scientific Active Pixel Sensors (APS) development for highly performing sCMOS cameras, whose high granularity and sensitivity allow to significantly boost tracking, improve particle identification and lower the energy threshold. The X-Y track project obtained from the reconstruction of the sCMOS images is combined with a PMT measurement to obtain a full 3D track reconstruction. In addition, several synergic R&Ds based on the CYGNO experimental approach are under development in the CYGNO collaboration (see Sec 2) to further enhance the light yield by means of electro luminescence after the amplification stage, to improve the tracking performances by exploiting negative ion drift operation within the INITIUM ERC Consolidator Grant, and to boost the sensitivity to O(GeV) Dark Matter masses by employing hydrogen rich target towards the development of PHASE 2 (see Sec. 1.2). While still under optimization and subject to possible significant improvements, the CYGNO experimental approach performances and capabilities demonstrated so far with prototypes allow to foresee the development of an O(30) m3 experiment by 2026 for a cost of O(10) MEUROs. A CYGNO-30 experiment would be able to give a significant contribution to the search and study of Dark Matter with masses below 10 GeV/c2 for both SI and SD coupling. In case of a Dark Matter observation claim by other experiments, the information provided by a directional detector such as CYGNO would be fundamental to positively confirm the galactic origin of the allegedly detected Dark Matter signal. CYGNO-30 could furthermore provide the first directional measurement of solar neutrinos from the pp chain, possibly extending to lower energies the Borexino measurement2. In order to reach this goal, the CYGNO project is proceeding through a staged approach. The PHASE 0 50 L detector (LIME, recently installed underground LNGS) will validate the full performances of the optical readout via APS commercial cameras and PMTs and the Montecarlo simulation of the expected backgrounds. The full CYGNO-04 demonstrator will be realized with all the technological and material choices foreseen for CYGNO-30, to demonstrate the scalability of the experimental approach and the potentialities of the large PHASE 2 detector to reach the expected physics goals. The first PHASE 1 design anticipated a 1 m3 active volume detector with two back-to-back TPCs with a central cathode and 500 mm drift length. Each 1 m2 readout area would have been composed by 9 + 9 readout modules having the LIME PHASE 0 dimensions and layout. Time (end of INITIUM project by March 2025) and current space availability at underground LNGS (only Hall F) forced the rescaling of the PHASE 1 active volume and design to a 0.4 m3, hence CYGNO-04. CYGNO-04 will keep the back-to-back double TPC layout with 500 mm drift length each, but with an 800 x 500 mm2 readout area covered by a 2 + 2 modules based on LIME design. The reduction of the detector volume has no impact on the technological objectives of PHASE 1, since the modular design with central cathode, detector materials and shieldings and auxiliary systems are independent of the total volume. The physics reach (which is a byproduct of PHASE 1 and NOT an explicit goal) will be only very partially reduced (less than a factor 2 overall) since a smaller detector volume implies also a reduced background from internal materials radioactivity. In addition, the cost reduction of CYGNO-04 of about 1⁄3 with respect to CYGNO-1 illustrated in the CDR effectively makes the overall project more financially sustainable (see CBS in the last section). In summary this document will explain: the physical motivation of the CYGNO project and the technical motivations of the downscale of the PHASE 1 to CYGNO-04, 400 liters of active volume, with respect to the demonstrator presented in the CDR; the results of R&D and the Montecarlo expectations for PHASE 0; the technical choices, procedures and the executive drawings of CYGNO-04 in the Hall F of the LNGS; safety evaluations and the interference/request to the LNGS services; Project management, WBS/WBC, WP, GANTT, ecc

PhD thesis in Physics Engineering, in the field of Instrumentation, performed under scientific guidance of Doutora Cristina Maria Bernardes Monteiro and Doutor Carlos Alberto de Oliveira Henriques, presented to the Physics Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. High Pressure Time Projection Chambers (HP-TPC) based on secondary scintillation, also called electroluminescence (EL) signal amplification are being proposed for rare event detection, such as directional dark matter search, double electron capture and double beta decay detection. In the last few years, the Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon-based TPC (NEXT) has been developing its technology, achieving an energy resolution < 1 % FWHM at the Qββ of the double beta decay of 136Xe, 2458 keV. The good energy resolution, the use of the event topology reconstruction for improved background suppression and the possibility to scale up to larger masses are the main strengths for the success of this experiment. The discrimination of the rare event through its topological signature of primary ionisation trails is a major asset for this type of TPC when compared to liquid or double phase TPCs. However, it is limited mainly by the high electron diffusion in pure xenon. In order to overcome this limitation, some studies have been performed with the addition of sub-percent concentrations of molecular species to xenon in order to reduce the electron diffusion. From the studied species, CH4appears to be a good candidate, since it allows to achieve a good energy resolution, as well as a good electron cooling efficiency. Nevertheless, the continuity of studies with additives to be used with xenon, to decrease the electron diffusion, has a primordial importance for this experiment. Recently, simulation studies have shown that helium can also be apotential candidate for reducing the electron diffusion in xenon-based mixtures. Therefore, the use of helium as an additive to pure xenon has been assessed, since its characteristics as a noble gas are a major advantage, e.g. in terms of gas purification and, in opposition to xenon admixtures with molecular additives, where the high quenching of xenon excited states and dissociative electron attachment induced by some molecular species will not occur in helium. Therefore, the EL output of xenon-helium mixtures is expected to be similar as that of pure xenon. Thus, the helium admixtures with xenon might be an attractive solution to significantly reduce the electron diffusion and improve the discrimination efficiency of these optical TPCs. Experimental studies of the impact of helium addition to xenon on the gas EL yield and on the respective EL statistical fluctuations have not yet been carried out, being, thus, of great importance to investigate these issues. In this work, the electroluminescence yield of Xe-He mixtures in the range of 0 to 30% helium is investigated. The impact of helium addition on the gas EL output is demonstrated to be small and its impact on the EL statistical fluctuations has been found to be negligible, within the experimental uncertainties. The EL yield is reduced by ~2%, 3%, 6% and 10% for 10%, 15%, 20% and30% of helium concentration, respectively, for a typical reduced electric fieldof 2.5 kV/cm/bar in the scintillation region. This decrease is lower than had been anticipated by the most recent simulation data presented in the literature. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the energy resolution remains unchanged, relative to that obtained in pure xenon. Nevertheless, there is a disadvantage with the TPC operation at higher pressures having 10-20 % helium concentrations, because the amount of xenon available as source of neutrinoless double beta decay will be reduced, in contrast to the addition of sub-percent levels of molecular additives, where the amount of xenon remains the same, an issue that will also be discussed in the present work. The present PhD project will have impact on the choice of the NEXT-100 detector technology and, in addition, its relevance goes beyond NEXT, being of relevance to any HPXe optical TPC where the reduction of electron diffusion is of significant importance. Moreover, the present results are a main benchmark for the simulation tools to be applied to future optical TPCs based on Xe-He mixtures. RESUMO: As câmaras de projeção temporal de alta pressão (HP-TPC) baseadas em cintilação secundária, também chamada de sinal de amplificação por eletroluminescência (EL) têm sido propostas para deteção de eventos raros, tais como pesquisas sobre matéria negra direcional, decaimento por dupla captura de eletrões, e deteção do decaimento beta duplo. Nos últimos anos, a colaboração NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) tem vindo a desenvolver a sua tecnologia baseada num HP-TPC, tendo já atingido uma resolução em energia < 1 % FWHM para a energia, Qbb, do decaimento beta duplo do 136Xe, 2458 keV. A boa resolução em energia, a utilização da reconstrução topológica dos eventos para uma supressão de fundo e a possibilidade de escalar para grandes massas são os principais pontos fortes para o sucesso desta experiência. A discriminação dos eventos raros através da sua assinatura topológica do rasto da ionização primária é um grande trunfo para este tipo de TPC, quando comparado com TPCs de fase líquida ou dupla. Contudo, esta discriminação está limitada principalmente pela elevada difusão de eletrões em xénon puro. De forma a ultrapassar esta limitação, têm sido realizados alguns estudos com adição ao xénon de espécies moleculares com concentrações sub-percentuais, de forma a reduzir a difusão de eletrões. Das espécies moleculares estudadas, o CH4 parece ser um bom candidato, uma vez que permite a obtenção de uma boa resolução em energia, assim como uma boa eficiência no arrefecimento dos eletrões. Não obstante, a continuação dos estudos com aditivos a ser usados com xénon para reduzir a difusão de eletrões tem uma importância primordial para esta experiência. Recentemente, estudos de simulação têm mostrado que o hélio pode ser um potencial candidato para reduzir a difusão de eletrões em misturas baseadas em xénon. Portanto, a utilização do hélio como aditivo ao xénon puro tem vindo a ser avaliada, já que as suas características como gás nobre são uma grande vantagem, e.g. em termos de purificação do gás, e em oposição às misturas de xénon com aditivos moleculares, onde os efeitos de inibição dos estados excitados de xénon e perda de eletrões induzidos por espécies moleculares não vão ocorrer em hélio. Portanto, é expectável que o resultado de eletroluminescência das misturas de xénon-hélio seja semelhante ao do xénon puro. Por conseguinte, as misturas de hélio com xénon podem ser uma solução atrativa para reduzir significativamente a difusão de eletrões e melhorar a eficiência de discriminação destas TPCs óticas. Estudos experimentais do impacto da adição de hélio ao xénon no rendimento de eletroluminescência do gás e nas respetivas flutuações estatísticas da eletroluminescência ainda não foram realizados, sendo, desta maneira, de grande importância para a investigação destas questões. Neste trabalho, o rendimento de eletroluminescência de misturas de Xe-He é investigado para hélio em quantidades de 0 a 30 %. É demonstrado que o impacto da adição de hélio no resultado da eletroluminescência no gás é pequeno e o seu impacto nas flutuações estatísticas de eletroluminescência foi igualmente demonstrado ser insignificante, dentro das incertezas experimentais. O rendimento de eletroluminescência é reduzido em ~2%, 3%, 6% e 10% para concentrações de hélio de 10%, 15%, 20% e 30%, respetivamente, e para um campo elétrico reduzido típico de 2.5 kV/cm/bar na região de cintilação. Esta diminuição é menor do que tinha sido antecipado pelos dados mais recentes de simulações apresentados na literatura. Além disso, ficou demonstrado que a resolução em energia se mantém inalterada, relativamente àquela obtida em xénon puro. Não obstante, existe uma desvantagem com a operação de uma HP-TPC contendo hélio em concentrações de 10-20 %, porque a quantidade de xénon disponível como fonte do decaimento beta duplo sem emissão de neutrinos vai ser menor, em contraste com a adição a nível sub-percentual de aditivos moleculares, onde a quantidade de xénon se mantém igual, um problema que também será discutido no presente trabalho. O presente projeto de doutoramento terá impacto na escolha da tecnologia do detetor NEXT-100 e, além disso, a sua relevância vai além do NEXT, sendo de relevância para qualquer TPC ótico de xénon de alta pressão, onde a redução da difusão de eletrões tem uma importância significativa. Além disso, os presentes resultados são uma marca de referência importante para ferramentas de simulação a ser aplicadas em futuras TPCs óticas baseadas em misturas de Xe-He.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia Física apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia O crípton é o gás nobre que possui os melhores valores de resolução espacial para energias entre 14−34 keV, o que o torna um bom candidato para aplicações de imagiologia. Além disso, a escolha de Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) com 100 μm de espessura ao invés de um GEM standard representa uma vantagem inegável; os primeiros são mais robustos a descargas, atingindo coeficientes de multiplicação semelhantes. Combinando estas duas características, é possível atingir ganhos em carga mais elevados e melhores valores de resolução espacial, o que permite obter imagens mais detalhadas no intervalo de energias 14−34 keV. Uma cascata de dois GEMs não convencionais (com o dobro da espessura de um GEM standard) fabricados no CERN foi associada a uma placa resistiva de leitura bidimensional, com uma área ativa de 10×10 cm2 . Esta montagem permite recolher informação sobre a energia e a posição de cada evento usando apenas quatro canais, simplificando a eletrónica associada, bem como a própria reconstrução das imagens. Este detetor foi operado em misturas baseadas em crípton e irradiado com uma fonte de 55Fe e com uma fonte contínua de raios-x. Sempre que possível, os resultados foram comparados com as medidas obtidas com uma mistura Ar-CO2 (70:30). Parâmetros como ganho em carga, resolução em energia, relação sinal ruído das imagens, resolução espacial e resposta em contraste foram determinados nestas condições. Para as misturas baseadas em crípton, verificou-se uma redução na resolução espacial para energias acima dos 18 keV. O valor da MTF a 10% no intervalo de energias 22−24 keV foi também avaliado, sendo 0.5876(342) lp/cm para Ar-CO2 (70:30) e cerca de 3 lp/cm para misturas de Kr-CO2. Krypton is known to have the best value of position resolution amongst the noble gases within the range 14−34 keV, which makes it a good candidate for imaging applications. Also, the choosing of 100 μm thick Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) over the standard GEM plates presents an undeniable advantage as the former is more robust to sparking while achieving similar multiplication coefficients. By taking these factors into account, higher charge gains and lower values of position resolution can be achieved to produce cleaner imaging data in the energy range 14−34 keV. A cascade of two non-standard GEM plates (twice the thickness of a standard GEM) fabricated at CERN was coupled to a 2D resistive readout with an active area of 10×10 cm2. This setup allows event energy and interaction position information to be recorded using only four channels, simplifying the electronic system and the image reconstruction process. This detection system was operated in krypton-based mixtures and irradiated by a 55Fe and a continuous x-ray source. Whenever possible, the results were compared to the ones achieved in a Ar-CO2 (70:30) mixture. Parameters such as the charge gain, energy resolution, image signal-to-noise ratio, position resolution and contrast response were measured under the described conditions. For krypton-based mixtures, the reduction of position resolution happened for radiation energies higher than 18 keV. The Modulation Transfer Function value at 10% in the energy interval 22−24 keV was also evaluated, being 0.5876(342) lp/cm for Ar-CO2 (70:30) and around 3 lp/cm for Kr-CO2 mixtures.

A Eletroluminescência (EL), como método de amplificação de sinal da ionização primária produzida em gases nobres, em contadores gasosos de cintilação proporcional (CGCP), desenvolvidos na década de 1970, tem desempenhado um papel importante em aplicações a diversas áreas, tais como astronomia, física dos plasmas e física das altas energias, até meados dos anos 1990 com a evolução dos detetores de estado sólido. No entanto, nos últimos anos a EL recuperou importância em experiências para a deteção de eventos raros, como a procura de matéria negra e do decaimento beta duplo. NEXT (Neutrino Experiment in a xenon TPC) é uma colaboração internacional que tem como objetivo medir o decaimento beta duplo sem emissão de neutrinos, 0νββ, no isótopo 136Xe. Estudos recentes de simulação Monte Carlo realizados em Coimbra apontam tendências diferentes para cada gás adicionado ao xénon. Enquanto a presença de CH4 em quantidades da ordem de um por cento ou inferior não tem impacto importante na redução de EL, a adição de CF4 reduz significativamente a EL, mesmo em quantidades de algumas décimas percentuais. Um compromisso deve ser encontrado entre a redução de EL e a quantidade de impurezas moleculares a adicionar ao xénon. É de grande importância para a colaboração NEXT que estes estudos de I&D sejam realizados, tanto experimentalmente como por simulação. O Grupo de Instrumentação Atómica e Nuclear (GIAN) do Centro de Instrumentação da Universidade de Coimbra tem grande experiência na área, tendo ficado a seu cargo a realização de estudos detalhados sobre este tema. No presente trabalho, foram realizadas medidas relativas do rendimento de EL em xénon e em misturas de xénon usando um CGCP sem região de deriva com um campo elétrico uniforme. Outros parâmetros investigados, incluindo a amplitude, resolução em energia e velocidade de deriva, foram medidos em função do campo elétrico reduzido na região de cintilação. Os resultados obtidos são concordantes com os resultados de simulação de Monte Carlo.
