The SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Interstellar Medium) survey used the APEX telescope to map 84 deg^2 of the Galactic plane between l = -60 deg and l = +31 deg in several molecular transitions, including 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1), thus probing the moderately dense (~10^3 cm^-3) component of the interstellar medium. With an angular resolution of 30'' and a typical 1-sigma sensitivity of 0.8-1.0 K at 0.25 km/s velocity resolution, it gives access to a wide range of structures, from individual star-forming clumps to giant molecular clouds and complexes. The coverage includes a good fraction of the first and fourth Galactic quadrants, allowing us to constrain the large scale distribution of cold molecular gas in the inner Galaxy. In this paper we provide an updated overview of the full survey and the data reduction procedures used. We also assess the quality of these data and describe the data products that are being made publicly available as part of this first data release (DR1). We present integrated maps and position-velocity maps of the molecular gas and use these to investigate the correlation between the molecular gas and the large scale structural features of the Milky Way such as the spiral arms, Galactic bar and Galactic centre. We find that approximately 60 per cent of the molecular gas is associated with the spiral arms and these appear as strong intensity peaks in the derived Galactocentric distribution. We also find strong peaks in intensity at specific longitudes that correspond to the Galactic centre and well known star forming complexes, revealing that the 13CO emission is concentrated in a small number of complexes rather than evenly distributed along spiral arms., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We use the 13CO(2-1) emission from the SEDIGISM high-resolution spectral-line survey of the inner Galaxy, to extract the molecular cloud population with a large dynamic range in spatial scales, using the SCIMES algorithm. This work compiles a cloud catalogue with a total of 10663 molecular clouds, 10300 of which we were able to assign distances and compute physical properties. We study some of the global properties of clouds using a science sample, consisting of 6664 well resolved sources and for which the distance estimates are reliable. In particular, we compare the scaling relations retrieved from SEDIGISM to those of other surveys, and we explore the properties of clouds with and without high-mass star formation. Our results suggest that there is no single global property of a cloud that determines its ability to form massive stars, although we find combined trends of increasing mass, size, surface density and velocity dispersion for the sub-sample of clouds with ongoing high-mass star formation. We then isolate the most extreme clouds in the SEDIGISM sample (i.e. clouds in the tails of the distributions) to look at their overall Galactic distribution, in search for hints of environmental effects. We find that, for most properties, the Galactic distribution of the most extreme clouds is only marginally different to that of the global cloud population. The Galactic distribution of the largest clouds, the turbulent clouds and the high-mass star-forming clouds are those that deviate most significantly from the global cloud population. We also find that the least dynamically active clouds (with low velocity dispersion or low virial parameter) are situated further afield, mostly in the least populated areas. By combining two surveys covering a large fraction of the molecular material in the Galactic disk we investigate the role the spiral arms play in the star formation process. We have matched clumps identified by ATLASGAL with their parental GMCs as identified by SEDIGISM, and use these giant molecular cloud (GMC) masses, the bolometric luminosities, and integrated clump masses obtained in a concurrent paper to estimate the dense gas fractions (DGF$_{\rm gmc}=\sum M_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$) and the instantaneous star forming efficiencies (i.e., SFE$_{\rm gmc} = \sum L_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$). We find that the molecular material associated with ATLASGAL clumps is concentrated in the spiral arms ($\sim$60% found within $\pm$10 km s$^{-1}$ of an arm). We have searched for variations in the values of these physical parameters with respect to their proximity to the spiral arms, but find no evidence for any enhancement that might be attributable to the spiral arms. The combined results from a number of similar studies based on different surveys indicate that, while spiral-arm location plays a role in cloud formation and HI to H$_2$ conversion, the subsequent star formation processes appear to depend more on local environment effects. This leads us to conclude that the enhanced star formation activity seen towards the spiral arms is the result of source crowding rather than the consequence of a any physical process., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. We present the results of a programme to search and identify the nature of unusual sources within the All-sky Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) that is based on a machine-learning algorithm for anomaly detection, namely one-class support vector machines (OCSVM). Designed to detect sources deviating from a training set composed of known classes, this algorithm was used to create a model for the expected data based on WISE objects with spectroscopic identifications in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Subsequently, it marked as anomalous those sources whose WISE photometry was shown to be inconsistent with this model. We report the results from optical and near-infrared spectroscopy follow-up observations of a subset of 36 bright ($g_{AB}$<19.5) objects marked as 'anomalous' by the OCSVM code to verify its performance. Among the observed objects, we identified three main types of sources: i) low redshift (z~0.03-0.15) galaxies containing large amounts of hot dust (53%), including three Wolf-Rayet galaxies; ii) broad-line quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) (33%) including low-ionisation broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasars and a rare QSO with strong and narrow ultraviolet iron emission; iii) Galactic objects in dusty phases of their evolution (3%). The nature of four of these objects (11%) remains undetermined due to low signal-to-noise or featureless spectra. The current data show that the algorithm works well at detecting rare but not necessarily unknown objects among the brightest candidates. Context: We describe the new SEPIA (Swedish-ESO PI Instrument for APEX) receiver, which was designed and built by the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD), at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) in collaboration with ESO. It was installed and commissioned at the APEX telescope during 2015 with an ALMA Band 5 receiver channel and updated with a new frequency channel (ALMA Band 9) in February 2016. Aims: This manuscript aims to provide, for observers who use the SEPIA receiver, a reference in terms of the hardware description, optics and performance as well as the commissioning results. Methods: Out of three available receiver cartridge positions in SEPIA, the two current frequency channels, corresponding to ALMA Band 5, the RF band 158--211 GHz, and Band 9, the RF band 600--722 GHz, provide state-of-the-art dual polarization receivers. The Band 5 frequency channel uses 2SB SIS mixers with an average SSB noise temperature around 45K with IF (intermediate frequency) band 4--8 GHz for each sideband providing total 4x4 GHz IF band. The Band 9 frequency channel uses DSB SIS mixers with a noise temperature of 75--125K with IF band 4--12 GHz for each polarization. The origin and life-cycle of molecular clouds are still poorly constrained, despite their importance for understanding the evolution of the interstellar medium. We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous, spectroscopic survey of the inner Galactic plane, in order to complement the many continuum Galactic surveys available with crucial distance and gas-kinematic information. Our aim is to combine this data set with recent infrared to sub-millimetre surveys at similar angular resolutions. The SEDIGISM survey covers 78 deg^2 of the inner Galaxy (-60 deg < l < +18 deg, |b| < 0.5 deg) in the J=2-1 rotational transition of 13CO. This isotopologue of CO is less abundant than 12CO by factors up to 100. Therefore, its emission has low to moderate optical depths, and higher critical density, making it an ideal tracer of the cold, dense interstellar medium. The data have been observed with the SHFI single-pixel instrument at APEX. The observational setup covers the 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1) lines, plus several transitions from other molecules. The observations have been completed. Data reduction is in progress, and the final data products will be made available in the near future. Here we give a detailed description of the survey and the dedicated data reduction pipeline. Preliminary results based on a science demonstration field covering -20 deg < l < -18.5 deg are presented. Analysis of the 13CO(2-1) data in this field reveals compact clumps, diffuse clouds, and filamentary structures at a range of heliocentric distances. By combining our data with data in the (1-0) transition of CO isotopologues from the ThrUMMS survey, we are able to compute a 3D realization of the excitation temperature and optical depth in the interstellar medium. Ultimately, this survey will provide a detailed, global view of the inner Galactic interstellar medium at an unprecedented angular resolution of ~30"., Comment: 30 pages. Broad absorption line quasars are among the objects presenting the fastest outflows. The launching mechanism itself is not completely understood. Models in which they could be launched from the accretion disk, and then curved and accelerated by the effect of the radiation pressure, have been presented. We conducted an extensive observational campaign, from radio to optical band, to collect information about their nature and test the models present in the literature, the main dichotomy being between a young scenario and an orientation one. We found a variety of possible orientations, morphologies, and radio ages, not converging to a particular explanation for the BAL phenomenon. From our latest observations in the m- and mm-band, we obtained an indication of a lower dust abundance with respect to normal quasars, thus suggesting a possible feedback process on the host galaxy. Also, in the low-frequency regime we confirmed the presence of CSS components, sometime in conjunction with a GPS one already detected at higher frequencies. Following this, about 70% of our sample turns out to be in a GPS or CSS+GPS phase. We conclude that fast outflows, responsible for the BAL features, can be more easily present among objects going through a restarting or just-started radio phase, where radiation pressure can substantially contribute to their acceleration., Comment: accepted for publication on AN

Broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) are objects showing absorption from relativistic outflows, with velocities up to 0.2c. These manifest, in about 15% of quasars, as absorption troughs on the blue side of UV emission lines, such as C iv and Mg ii. In this work, we complement the information collected in the cm band for our previously presented sample of radio loud BAL QSOs with new observations at m and mm bands. Our aim is to verify the presence of old, extended radio components in the MHz range, and probe the emission of dust (linked to star formation) in the mm domain. We observed 5 sources from our sample, already presenting hints of low-frequency emission, with the GMRT at 235 and 610 MHz. Other 17 sources (more than half the sample) were observed with bolometer cameras at IRAM-30m and APEX. All sources observed with the GMRT present extended emission at a scale of tens of kpc. In some cases these measurements allow us to identify a second component in the SED, at frequencies below 1.4 GHz, beyond the one already studied in the GHz domain. In the mm-band, only one source shows emission clearly ascribable to dust. Upper limits were obtained for the remaining targets. These findings confirm that BAL QSOs can also be present in old radio sources, or even in restarting ones, where favourable conditions for the outflow launching/acceleration are present. A suggestion that these outflows could be precursors of the jet comes from the fact that ~70% of our sample can be considered in a GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) or Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS)+GPS phase. This would confirm the idea proposed by other authors that these outflows could be recollimated to form the jet. Comparing with previous works in the literature, dust emission seems to be weaker than the what expected in 'normal' QSOs, suggesting that a feedback mechanism could inhibit star formation in radio-loud BAL QSOs., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report about a 230 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) fringe finder observation of blazar 3C 279 with the APEX telescope in Chile, the phased submillimeter array (SMA), and the SMT of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). We installed VLBI equipment and measured the APEX station position to 1 cm accuracy (1 sigma). We then observed 3C 279 on 2012 May 7 in a 5 hour 230 GHz VLBI track with baseline lengths of 2800 M$\lambda$ to 7200 M$\lambda$ and a finest fringe spacing of 28.6 micro-arcseconds. Fringes were detected on all baselines with SNRs of 12 to 55 in 420 s. The correlated flux density on the longest baseline was ~0.3 Jy/beam, out of a total flux density of 19.8 Jy. Visibility data suggest an emission region <38 uas in size, and at least two components, possibly polarized. We find a lower limit of the brightness temperature of the inner jet region of about 10^10 K. Lastly, we find an upper limit of 20% on the linear polarization fraction at a fringe spacing of ~38 uas. With APEX the angular resolution of 230 GHz VLBI improves to 28.6 uas. This allows one to resolve the last-photon ring around the Galactic Center black hole event horizon, expected to be 40 uas in diameter, and probe radio jet launching at unprecedented resolution, down to a few gravitational radii in galaxies like M 87. To probe the structure in the inner parsecs of 3C 279 in detail, follow-up observations with APEX and five other mm-VLBI stations have been conducted (March 2013) and are being analyzed., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Broad absorption lines (BALs) are present in the spectra of ~20% of quasars (QSOs); this indicates fast outflows (up to 0.2c) that intercept the observer's line of sight. These QSOs can be distinguished again into radio-loud (RL) BAL QSOs and radio-quiet (RQ) BAL QSOs. The first are very rare, even four times less common than RQ BAL QSOs. The reason for this is still unclear and leaves open questions about the nature of the BAL-producing outflows and their connection with the radio jet. We explored the spectroscopic characteristics of RL and RQ BAL QSOs with the aim to find a possible explanation for the rarity of RL BAL QSOs. We identified two samples of genuine BAL QSOs from SDSS optical spectra, one RL and one RQ, in a suitable redshift interval (2.5$

Broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) belong to a class of objects not well-understood as yet. Their UV spectra show BALs in the blue wings of the UV resonance lines, owing to ionized gas with outflow velocities up to 0.2 c. They can have radio emission that is difficult to characterize and that needs to be studied at various wavelengths and resolutions. We aim to study the pc-scale properties of their synchrotron emission and, in particular, to determine their core properties. We performed observations in the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technique, using both the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz, and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 and 8.4 GHz to map the pc-scale structure of the brightest radio-loud objects of our sample, allowing a proper morphological interpretation. A variety of morphologies have been found: 9 BAL QSOs on a total of 11 observed sources have a resolved structure. Core-jet, double, and symmetric objects are present, suggesting different orientations. In some cases the sources can be young GPS or CSS. The projected linear size of the sources, also considering observations from our previous work for the same objects, can vary from tens of pc to hundreds of kpc. In some cases, a diffuse emission can be supposed from the missing flux-density with respect to previous lower resolution observations. Finally, the magnetic field strength does not significantly differ from the values found in the literature for radio sources with similar sizes. These results are not easily interpreted with the youth scenario for BAL QSOs, in which they are generally compact objects still expelling a dust cocoon. The variety of orientations, morphologies, and extensions found are presumably related to different possible angles for the BAL producing outflows, with respect to the jet axis. Accounting for ~20% of the total QSO population, Broad Absorption Line QSOs are still an unsolved problem in the AGN context. They present wide troughs in the UV spectrum, due to material with velocities up to 0.2 c toward the observer. The two models proposed in literature try to explain them as a particular phase of the evolution of QSOs or as normal QSOs, but seen from a particular line of sight. We built a statistically complete sample of Radio-Loud BAL QSOs, and carried out an observing campaign to piece together the whole spectrum in the cm wavelength domain, and highlight all the possible differences with respect to a comparison sample of Radio-Loud non-BAL QSOs. VLBI observations at high angular resolution have been performed, to study the pc-scale morphology of these objects. Finally, we tried to detect a possible dust component with observations at mm-wavelengths. Results do not seem to indicate a young age for all BAL QSOs. Instead a variety of orientations and morphologies have been found, constraining the outflows foreseen by the orientation model to have different possible angles with respect to the jet axis.

The origin of broad-absorption-line quasars (BAL QSOs) is still an open issue. Accounting for ~20% of the QSO population, these objects present broad absorption lines in their optical spectra generated from outflows with velocities up to 0.2c. In this work we present the results of a multi-frequency study of a well-defined radio-loud BAL QSO sample, and a comparison sample of radio-loud non-BAL QSOs, both selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We aim to test which of the currently-popular models for the BAL phenomenon - `orientation' or 'evolutionary' - best accounts for the radio properties of BAL quasars. Observations from 1.4 to 43 GHz have been obtained with the VLA and Effelsberg telescopes, and data from 74 to 408 MHz have been compiled from the literature. The fractions of candidate GHz-peaked sources are similar in the two samples (36\pm12% vs 23\pm8%), suggesting that BAL QSOs are not generally younger than non-BAL QSOs. BAL and non-BAL QSOs show a large range of spectral indices, consistent with a broad range of orientations. There is weak evidence (91% confidence) that the spectral indices of the BAL QSOs are steeper than those of non-BAL QSOs, mildly favouring edge-on orientations. At a higher level of significance (\geq97%), the spectra of BAL QSOs are not flatter than those of non-BAL QSOs, which suggests that a polar orientation is not preferred., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We completed observations with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope to measure the polarised emission from a complete sample of Compact Steep-Spectrum sources. We observed the sources at four different frequencies. We complemented these measurements with polarisation parameters at 1.4 GHz derived from the NVSS. Previous single dish measurements were taken from the catalogue of Tabara and Inoue. The depolarisation index DP was computed for four pairs of frequencies. A drop in the fractional polarisation appeared in the radio emission when observing at frequencies below about 2 GHz. Rotation measures were derived for about 25% of the sources in the sample. The values range from about -20 rad/m**2} found for 3C138 to 3900 rad/m**2 in 3C119. In all cases, the lambda**2 law is closely followed. The presence of a foreground screen as predicted by the Tribble model or with ``partial coverage'' as defined by ourselves can explain the polarimetric behaviour of the CSS sources detected in polarisation by the present observations. Indication of repolarisation at lower frequencies was found for some sources. A case of possible variability in the fractional polarisation is also suggested. The most unexpected result was found for the distribution of the fractional polarisations versus the linear sizes of the sources. Our results appear to disagree with the findings of Cotton and collaborators and Fanti and collaborators for the B3-VLA sample of CSS sources, the so-called ``Cotton effect''. This apparent contradiction may, however, be caused by the large contamination of the sample by quasars with respect to the B3-VLA., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysycs, in press

Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs) have been found to be associated with extremely compact radio sources. These reduced dimensions can be either due to projection effects or these objects might actually be intrinsically small. Exploring these two hypotheses is important to understand the nature and origin of the BAL phenomenon because orientation effects are an important discriminant between the different models proposed to explain this phenomenon. We present results on low-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of 70 infrared-luminous galaxies obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard Spitzer. We selected sources from the European Large Area Infrared Survey (ELAIS) with S15 > 0.8 mJy and photometric or spectroscopic z > 1. About half of the sample are QSOs in the optical, while the remaining sources are galaxies, comprising both obscured AGN and starbursts. We classify the spectra using well-known infrared diagnostics, as well as a new one that we propose, into three types of source: those dominated by an unobscured AGN (QSOs), obscured AGN, and starburst-dominated sources. Starbursts concentrate at z ~ 0.6-1.0 favored by the shift of the 7.7-micron PAH band into the selection 15 micron band, while AGN spread over the 0.5 < z < 3.1 range. Star formation rates (SFR) are estimated for individual sources from the luminosity of the PAH features. An estimate of the average PAH luminosity in QSOs and obscured AGN is obtained from the composite spectrum of all sources with reliable redshifts. The estimated mean SFR in the QSOs is 50-100 Mo yr^-1, but the implied FIR luminosity is 3-10 times lower than that obtained from stacking analysis of the FIR photometry, suggesting destruction of the PAH carriers by energetic photons from the AGN. The SFR estimated in obscured AGN is 2-3 times higher than in QSOs of similar MIR luminosity. This discrepancy might not be due to luminosity effects or selection bias alone, but could instead indicate a connection between obscuration and star formation. However, the observed correlation between silicate absorption and the slope of the near- to mid-infrared spectrum is compatible with the obscuration of the AGN emission in these sources being produced in a dust torus., Comment: 32 pages, 24 figures, 15 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present multi-frequency observations of a sample of 15 radio-emitting Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs), covering a spectral range between 74 MHz and 43 GHz. They display mostly convex radio spectra which typically peak at about 1-5 GHz (in the observer's rest-frame), flatten at MHz frequencies, probably due to synchrotron self-absorption, and become steeper at high frequencies, i.e., >~ 20 GHz. VLA 22-GHz maps (HPBW ~ 80 mas) show unresolved or very compact sources, with linear projected sizes of <= 1 kpc. About 2/3 of the sample look unpolarised or weakly polarised at 8.4 GHz, frequency in which reasonable upper limits could be obtained for polarised intensity. Statistical comparisons have been made between the spectral index distributions of samples of BAL and non-BAL QSOs, both in the observed and the rest-frame, finding steeper spectra among non-BAL QSOs. However constraining this comparison to compact sources results in no significant differences between both distributions. This comparison is consistent with BAL QSOs not being oriented along a particular line of sight. In addition, our analysis of the spectral shape, variability and polarisation properties shows that radio BAL QSOs share several properties common to young radio sources like Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) or Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources., Comment: 18 pages, 11 Postscript figures, 12 Tables. We report results from a Spitzer GO-1 program of IRS spectroscopy of a large sample of Luminous Infrared Galaxies and quasars selected from the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) which have a wide multiwavelength coverage, including ISOCAM, ISOPHOT, IRAC and MIPS (from SWIRE), and optical photometry. We discuss CO spectral line data of a volume-limited sample of 23 nearby (z<0.03) low luminosity radio galaxies, selected from the B2 catalogue. We investigate whether the CO properties of our sample are correlated with the properties of the host galaxy, and in particular with the dust component. We find strong evidences for a physical link between the dust disks probed by HST in the galaxy cores and the molecular gas probed by the CO spectral lines, which in two cases display a double-horn shape, consistent with ordered rotation. On the other hand, from a preliminary comparison with other samples of radio sources we find no significant differences in molecular gas properties between FRI and FRII radio sources. We discuss CO spectral line data of a volume-limited sample of 23 nearby (z<0.03) low luminosity radi galaxies, selected from the B2 catalogue. Most of such objects (16/23) have HST imaging. Our aim is to establish the distribution of molecular gas masses in low luminosity radio galaxies, in comparison with other radio source samples, confirm the suggestion that the CO is in ordered rotation, determine its relation to the dust disks observed in these objects with HST and establish targets for future interferometric imaging., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. We selected from VLA-FIRST a sample of 94 objects starlike in SDSSS, and with APM colour O-E>2, i.e. consistent with their being high-z QSOs. 78 candidates were classified spectroscopically from published data (mainly SDSS) or observations reported here. The fractions of QSOs (51/78) and z > 3 QSOs (23/78) are comparable to those found in other photometric searches for high-z QSOs. We confirm that O-E>2 ensures inclusion of all QSOs with 3.7 < z < 4.4. The fraction of broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs for 2 < z < 4.4 is 27+-10 per cent (7/26), and the estimated BAL fraction for radio loud (RL) QSOs is at least as high as for optically selected QSOs (about 13 per cent). The high BAL fraction and the high fraction of LoBALs in our sample are likely due to the red colour selection. The space density of RL QSOs for 3.7 < z < 4.4, MAB (1450 A) < -26.6 and P(1.4 GHz) > 10^25.7 W Hz^(-1) is 1.7+-0.6 Gpc^(-3). Adopting a RL fraction 13.4+-3 per cent, this corresponds to rho = 12.5+-5.6 Gpc^(-3), in good agreement with the SDSS QSO luminosity function in Fan et al. (2001). We present results of a morphological analysis of a small subset of the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) galaxy population. The analysis is based on public ACS data taken inside the SWIRE N1 field, which are the deepest optical high-resolution imaging available within the SWIRE fields as of today. Our reference sample includes 156 galaxies detected by both ACS and SWIRE. Among the various galaxy morphologies, we disentangle two main classes, spheroids (or bulge-dominated galaxies) and disk-dominated ones, for which we compute the number counts as a function of flux. We then limit our sample to objects with IRAC fluxes brighter than 10 microJy, estimated ~90% completeness limit of the SWIRE catalogues, and compare the observed counts to model predictions. We find that the observed counts of the spheroidal population agree with the expectations of a hierarchical model while a monolithic scenario predicts steeper counts. Both scenaria, however, under-predict the number of late-type galaxies. These observations show that the large majority (close to 80 per cent) of the 3.6 and 4.5 micron galaxy population, even at these moderately faint fluxes, is dominated by spiral and irregular galaxies or mergers., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accapted for publication in MNRAS

We present a mid-infrared analysis of 35 quasars with spectroscopic redshifts selected from the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic Survey (SWIRE). We discuss their optical and mid-infrared (MIR) colors, and show that these quasars occupy well defined regions in MIR color-color space. We examine the issue of type-I AGN candidate selection in detail and propose new selection methods based on mid-IR colors. This paper discusses properties of the European Large Area ISO Survey 15 micron quasars and tries to establish a robust method of quasar selection for future use within the Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic Survey (SWIRE) framework. The importance of good quality ground-based optical data is stressed, both for the candidates selection and for the photometric redshifts estimates. Colour-colour plots and template fitting are used for these purposes. The properties of the 15 micron quasars sample are studied, including variability and black hole masses and compared to the properties of other quasars that lie within the same fields but have no mid-infrared counterparts.
