Abstract

The LAGO (Latin American Giant Observatory) observatory is an experiment that spans over Latin America in a wide range of latitudes that gives different rigidity cut offs for the enter of cosmic rays in the atmosphere. The motivation of the Observatory is to study atmospheric radiation and space weather through the measurement of the secondary emission of low energy cosmic rays at ground level using Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD). Abstract

NaBiF 4 :Yb3+(20 mol%),Er3+(2mol%) phosphors (NBF:Yb,Er) were synthesized by a simple precipitation method. Several NBF:Yb,Er samples were made with different Na/F ratios (from 2/16 to 6/16 and 6/24). XRD and SEM measurements indicated that all the NBF:Yb,Er phosphors presented an hexagonal phase and morphology of microbars with sizes of 1–2 μm, respectively. According to the photoluminescence measurements, these phosphors emitted red/green emission bands at 541/655 nm and their emission intensity increased ⁓10.5 and 21 times for the green and red bands, respectively, after increasing the Na/F ratio from 2/16 to 4/16. In addition, the emission color was tuned from deep-green to yellow. Moreover, the Na/F ratio was decreased from 6/16 to 6/24, this in turn, changed the color emission from deep-green to orange. This last change of color occurred because the red emission was mainly favored by the following two cross relaxation (CR) processes CR 1 : 4I 11/2 (Er3+)+ 4F 7/2 (Er3+)→4F 9/2 (Er3+)+ 4F 9/2 (Er3+) and CR 2 : 4S 3/2 (Er3+)+ 2F 7/2 (Yb3+)→4I 13/2 (Er3+)+ 2F 5/2 (Yb3+). The second CR 2 process also promoted the NIR emission at 1527 nm. Additionally, the lifetimes for the green and red bands increased from 393 to 420 μs and from 428 to 518 μs with the Na/F ratio, respectively. Thus, we presented here a new strategy to enhance the photoluminescence intensity and to control the emission-color/lifetimes without using extra co-dopants (as previously reported in literature). Abstract

The Latin American Giant Observatory (LAGO) is an extended cosmic ray observatory composed by a network of water-Cherenkov detectors spanning over different sites located at significantly different altitudes (from sea level up to more than $5000$\,m a.s.l.) and latitudes across Latin America, covering a huge range of geomagnetic rigidity cut-offs and atmospheric absorption/reaction levels. This detection network is designed to measure the temporal evolution of the radiation flux at ground level with extreme detail. The LAGO project is mainly oriented to perform basic research in three branches: high energy phenomena, space weather and atmospheric radiation at ground level. LAGO is built and operated by the LAGO Collaboration, a non-centralized collaborative union of more than 30 institutions from ten countries. Abstract

BackgroundThree prospective studies have evaluated the association between dietary acrylamide intake and endometrial cancer (EC) risk with inconsistent results. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between acrylamide intake and EC risk: for overall EC, for type-I EC, and in never smokers and never users of oral contraceptives (OCs). Smoking is a source of acrylamide, and OC use is a protective factor for EC risk.MethodsCox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the association between acrylamide intake and EC risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. Acrylamide intake was estimated from the EU acrylamide monitoring database, which was matched with EPIC questionnaire-based food consumption data. Acrylamide intake was energy adjusted using the residual method.ResultsNo associations were observed between acrylamide intake and overall EC (n=1382) or type-I EC risk (n=627). We observed increasing relative risks for type-I EC with increasing acrylamide intake among women who both never smoked and were non-users of OCs (HRQ5vsQ1: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.08-3.62; likelihood ratio test (LRT) P-value: 0.01, n=203).ConclusionsDietary intake of acrylamide was not associated with overall or type-I EC risk; however, positive associations with type I were observed in women who were both non-users of OCs and never smokers.

Abstract

The deterioration of built heritage is a major concern for many countries. In the specific caseof brick heritage buildings, degradation depends on several factors such as the chemical andmineralogical composition and the porosity of the bricks, floor insulation and exposure toenvironmental conditions. This paper applies a probabilistic Bayesian approach to identi-fying the pattern of recession of the brick walls using digital photogrammetry data. Twocases studies are presented corresponding to two buildings classified as Assets of CulturalInterest by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. The analysis of physico-chemical factors andphotogrammetric descriptions allow a holistic understanding of the deterioration processto be developed. The degradation patterns and degradation velocities obtained are used forthe structural assessment of the buildings. The comparison of the degradation patterns ofboth buildings considering their individual features allows the most critical factors in thedegradation process of brick walls to be identified., El deterioro del patrimonio construido es una gran preocupación para muchos países. En el caso específico de los edificios patrimoniales de ladrillo, la degradación depende de varios factores como la composición química y mineralógica y la porosidad de los ladrillos, el aislamiento del suelo y la exposición a las condiciones ambientales. Este artículo aplica un enfoque probabilístico bayesiano para identificar el patrón de recesión de las paredes de ladrillo utilizando datos de fotogrametría digital. Se presentan dos casos de estudio correspondientes a dos edificios catalogados como Bienes de Interés Cultural por el Ministerio de Cultura español. El análisis de los factores físico-químicos y las descripciones fotogramétricas permiten desarrollar una comprensión holística del proceso de deterioro. Los patrones de degradación y las velocidades de degradación obtenidos se utilizan para la evaluación estructural de los edificios. Abstract

Se ha desarrollado una plataforma de procesamiento y análisis de señales electroencefalográficas (EEG) para la evaluación de la efectividad de una nueva técnica de rehabilitación con realidad virtual en pacientes con ictus isquémico en fase crónica. Para ello, se han utilizado datos EEG de 64 canales de sujetos que realizaban tareas relacionadas con el movimiento de la mano derecha. Se ha elaborado un protocolo de preprocesamiento y post-procesamiento de señales EEG utilizando la plataforma EEGLAB. El preprocesado incluyó la eliminación de ruido a 50Hz, la re-referenciación, el rechazo de artefactos mediante Análisis de Componentes Independientes (ICA), y un filtro de paso banda de 0.5 a 50Hz. En el procesamiento, se analizaron los Potenciales Relacionados con Eventos (ERP). Este protocolo ha permitido extraer características relevantes de las señales EEG y se han encontrado diferencias entre los sujetos sanos y los pacientes con ictus.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the impact of emerging pollutants on reproductive health and semen quality in healthy men. Most studies have focused on investigating the association between human semen quality and exposure to organic contaminants in blood or urine samples. However, there is a notable lack of effective methodologies for detecting a wide range of organic chemicals in semen. To address this gap, we have developed and validated a robust LC-HRMS methodology for semen analysis. This methodology is capable of determining over 2,000 chemicals in seminal plasma and is compatible with suspect and non-target strategies, making it valuable for studies on male fertility. To demonstrate the potential of this methodology in characterizing the chemical exposome in seminal plasma, we analyzed exogenous organic chemicals and associated metabolites, such as plastic additives, PFAS, flame retardants, surfactants, and insecticides, in ten samples obtained from the LED-FERTYL general population cohort based in Catalonia, Spain.

Abstract

Background: Recent evidence suggest that energy distribution during the daytimecould be a potential determinant for the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Objective: To cross-sectionally assess the association between breakfast size and the prevalence of MetS in Spanish adults. Methods: Our study included a subset of 3644 participants from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Spain study recontacted between 2017-2018. Information on diet, sociodemographic, lifestyle, sleep quality, and chronotype was collected using standardized questionnaires, while anthropometric and blood pressure data were measured in a face-to-face personal interview by a nurse. MetS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) definition by measuring serum levels of total cholesterol, tryglycerides and glucose. Breakfast size was calculated as: (energy from breakfast/total energy intake) * 2000 kcal. To evaluate the association between breakfast size and MetS prevalence, a multivariable logistic regression model adjusted by potential confounders was used to estimate OR and 95% CI. Results: Prevalence of MetS in our study was 40.7%. The mean breakfast size was 306.6 * 2000 kcal (15% of the total daily energy intake), with 14 (0.4%) participants skipping breakfast. Participants in the highest quartile of breakfast size had a lower MetS prevalence compared to participants in the lowest quartile (ORQ4vsQ1 = 0.62; 95% CI = 0.51-0.76; p-trend < 0.001). No modification of the estimated ORs by sex, breakfast time, and number of eating occasions per day were observed. Abstract

Chemicals infiltrate our daily experiences through multiple exposure pathways. Human biomonitoring (HBM) is routinely used to comprehensively understand these chemical interactions. Historically, HBM depended on targeted screening methods limited to a relatively small set of chemicals with triple quadrupole instruments typically. However, recent advances in high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) have facilitated the use of broad-scope target, suspect, and non-target strategies, enhancing chemical exposome characterization within acceptable detection limits. Despite these advancements, establishing robust and efficient sample treatment protocols is still essential for trustworthy broad-range chemical analysis. This study sought to validate a methodology leveraging HRMS-based strategies for accurate profiling of exogenous chemicals and related metabolites in urine samples. We evaluated five extraction protocols, each encompassing various chemical classes, such as pharmaceuticals, plastic additives, personal care products, and pesticides, in terms of their extraction recoveries, linearity, matrix effect, sensitivity, and reproducibility. The most effective protocol was extensively validated and subsequently applied to 10 real human urine samples using wide-scope target analysis encompassing over 2000 chemicals. We successfully identified and semi-quantified a total of 36 chemicals using an ionization efficiency-based model, affirming the methodology's robust performance. Notably, our results dismissed the need for a deconjugation step, a typically labor-intensive and time-consuming process.© 2023. The Author(s).

Understanding the potential impact of organic contaminants on male fertility is crucial, yet limited studies have examined these chemicals in semen, with most focusing on urine and blood. To address this gap, we developed and validated a robust LC-HRMS methodology for semen analysis, with a focus on polar and semipolar chemicals. Our methodology enables the quantitative (or semiquantitative) analysis of >2000 chemicals being compatible with suspect and nontarget strategies and providing unprecedented insights into the occurrence and potential bioaccumulation of diverse contaminants in this matrix. We comprehensively analyzed exogenous organic chemicals and associated metabolites in ten semen samples from Spanish participants collected in an area with a large presence of the chemical industry included in the LED-FERTYL Spanish study cohort. This investigation revealed the presence of various contaminants in semen, including plastic additives, PFAS, flame retardants, surfactants, and insecticides. Notably, prevalent plastic additives such as phthalic acid esters and bisphenols were identified, indicating potential health risks. Additionally, we uncovered previously understudied chemicals like the tire additive 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and specific organophosphate flame retardants. This study showcases the potential of our methodology as a valuable tool for large-scale cohort studies, providing insights into the association between contaminant exposure and the risk of male fertility impairments.
