Featured Application: 2-Ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) has demonstrated its effectiveness as a low-viscosity, high-cetane (LVHC) solvent for reducing the viscosity of straight vegetable oils (SVO) while improving their cetane number. This allows for better performance in diesel engines with comparable power output and stable emissions. Additionally, EHN could be produced in a renewable way using green hydrogen and biomass-derived components to enhance its environmental sustainability, making it an ideal candidate for biofuel blends in diesel engines, offering a partial replacement for fossil diesel. This study evaluates the performance of biofuels created from triple blends of fossil diesel, sunflower or castor oil (SVOs), and 2-Ethylhexyl Nitrate (EHN), a low-viscosity, high-cetane (LVHC) solvent. EHN reduces the viscosity of SVOs to enable their use in conventional diesel engines without compromising fuel properties. The results show that the power output from these blends is similar to or greater than that of fossil diesel, with comparable fuel consumption. Furthermore, the blends significantly reduce emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and soot, though NOx emissions are slightly higher due to the nitrogen content in EHN. However, NOx levels remain within permissible limits. The substitution of fossil diesel could be further enhanced if EHN were produced using green hydrogen and lignocellulosic biomass, making it a renewable and sustainable biofuel component. These findings support the potential of EHN/SVO biofuel blends to replace a significant portion of fossil diesel in conventional diesel engines while maintaining performance and reducing harmful emissions, except for a slight increase in NOx. The excess of activated sludge generated in municipal wastewater treatment plants constitutes one of the challenging problems facing modern society. The high-water content of this waste makes difficult the transport, disposal, and management of these solids. In this work, activated sludge excess from a secondary clarifier has been dehydrated by means of a combination of temperature and hydrogen peroxide treatment. Three main operating variables have been considered to affect sludge dewaterability and filterability. Temperature (120–180 °C), hydrogen peroxide dose (0.01–0.03 M), and treatment time (20–60 min) influence have been assessed by completing a 15-run Box Behnken experimental design. Different output variables (water content, resistance to filtration, sedimentation volumetric index, extracellular polymeric substances, etc.) have been monitored. Generally, temperature seems to be the most influencing parameter to obtain a dehydrated sludge with acceptable management/disposal characteristics (sludge volume reduction and filterability). In line with the concept of circular economy, an attempt has been conducted to obtain a sustainable biosorbent from the dehydrated sludge generated in the previous stage. Optimum conditions of carbonization and activation revealed that the solid obtained at 400 °C by using ammonium nitrate as activation agent was the most efficient absorbent to eliminate some model compounds from water (namely, phenol, ofloxacin, and diuron); however, a clear improvement margin in the synthesis is foreseen. In this study, direct evidence for chemical penetration into petroleum coke particles during activation is presented. In addition, the porosity development was directly related to the sulphur loss and phase behaviour of the species present. Petroleum coke (petcoke, 6 wt.% sulphur) was activated with KOH and NaOH at temperatures between 400 and 800°C. The CS bonds were broken before 400°C in the presence of KOH and before 500°C in the presence of NaOH. Electron microscopy analysis of cross‐sectioned and ultramicrotomed samples revealed that sulphur was still present within the particles and that the hydroxide activation agents had penetrated to the centre of the particles (90–150 μm). After heating to 800°C and washing with a weak acid aqueous solution, essentially all the sulphur was removed, as was any remaining chemical agent. The characterization results, phase diagrams, and complementary experiments with carbonate chemical agents or steam suggest that, during heating, a molten phase formed around the petcoke particles. The composition of this molten phase changed as activation proceeded and both sulphur and ash components were liberated from the petcoke. Two series of catalysts were prepared by sol-gel and microemulsion synthetic procedure (SG and ME, respectively). Each series includes both pure Mg and Zr solids as well as Mg-Zr mixed solids with 25%, 50% and 75% nominal Zr content. The whole set of catalysts was characterized from thermal, structural and surface chemical points of view and subsequently applied to the liquid-phase xylose dehydration to furfural. Reactions were carried out in either a high-pressure autoclave or in an atmospheric pressure multi-reactor under a biphasic (organic/water) reaction mixture. Butan-2-ol and toluene were essayed as organic solvents. Catalysts prepared by microemulsion retained part of the surfactant used in the synthetic procedure, mainly associated with the Zr part of the solid. The MgZr-SG solid presented the highest surface acidity while the Mg3Zr-SG one exhibited the highest surface basicity among mixed systems. Xylose dehydration in the high-pressure system and with toluene/water solvent mixture led to the highest furfural yield. Moreover, the yield of furfural increases with the Zr content of the catalyst. Therefore, the catalysts constituted of pure ZrO2 (especially Zr-SG) are the most suitable to carry out the process under study although MgZr mixed solids could be also suitable for overall processes with additional reaction steps.
