This paper shows how a self-consistent dynamical model can be obtained by fitting the gravitational potential of the Milky Way to the stellar kinematics and densities from Gaia data. Using the Besancon Galaxy Model we derive a potential and the disc stellar distribution functions are computed based on three integrals of motion to model stationary stellar discs. The gravitational potential and the stellar distribution functions are built self-consistently, and then adjusted to be in agreement with the kinematics and the density distributions obtained from Gaia observations. A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is used to fit the free parameters of the dynamical model to Gaia parallax and proper motion distributions. The fit is done on several sets of Gaia eDR3 data, widely spread in longitudes and latitudes. We are able to determine the velocity dispersion ellipsoid and its tilt for sub-components of different ages, both varying with R and z. The density laws and their radial scale lengths, for the thin and thick disc populations are also obtained self-consistently. This new model has some interesting characteristics, such as a flaring thin disc. The thick disc is found to present very distinctive characteristics from the old thin disc, both in density and kinematics. This well supports the idea that thin and thick discs were formed in distinct scenarios as the density and kinematics transition between them is found to be abrupt. The dark matter halo is shown to be nearly spherical. We also derive the Solar motion to be (10.79 $\pm$ 0.56, 11.06 $\pm$ 0.94, 7.66 $\pm$ 0.43) km/s, in good agreement with recent studies. The resulting fully self-consistent gravitational potential, still axisymmetric, is a good approximation of a smooth mass distribution in the Milky Way and can be used for further studies, including to compute orbits for real stars in our Galaxy (abridged)., Comment: Final version, 26 pages, 14 figures. Context. Several methods have been proposed to build 3D extinction maps of the Milky Way (MW), most often based on Bayesian approaches. Although some studies employed machine learning (ML) methods in part of their procedure, or to specific targets, no 3D extinction map of a large volume of the MW solely based on a Neural Network method has been reported so far. Aims. We aim to apply deep learning as a solution to build 3D extinction maps of the MW. Methods. We built a convolutional neural network (CNN) using the CIANNA framework, and trained it with synthetic 2MASS data. We used the Besan\c{c}on Galaxy model to generate mock star catalogs, and 1D Gaussian random fields to simulate the extinction profiles. From these data we computed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to train the network, using the corresponding extinction profiles as targets. A forward pass with observed 2MASS CMDs provided extinction profile estimates for a grid of lines of sight. Results. We trained our network with data simulating lines of sight in the area of the Carina spiral arm tangent and obtained a 3D extinction map for a large sector in this region ($l = 257 - 303$ deg, $|b| \le 5$ deg), with distance and angular resolutions of $100$ pc and $30$ arcmin, respectively, and reaching up to $\sim 10$ kpc. Although each sightline is computed independently in the forward phase, the so-called fingers-of-God artifacts are weaker than in many other 3D extinction maps. We found that our CNN was efficient in taking advantage of redundancy across lines of sight, enabling us to train it with only 9 sightlines simultaneously to build the whole map. Conclusions. We found deep learning to be a reliable approach to produce 3D extinction maps from large surveys. With this methodology, we expect to easily combine heterogeneous surveys without cross-matching, and therefore to exploit several surveys in a complementary fashion., Comment: 7 pages

We investigate the properties of the double sequences of the Milky Way discs visible in the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs [Fe/H] diagram. In the framework of Galactic formation and evolution, we discuss the complex relationships between age, metallicity, [$\alpha$/Fe], and the velocity components. We study stars with measured chemical, seismic and astrometric properties from the APOGEE survey, the Kepler and Gaia satellites, respectively. We separate the [$\alpha$/Fe]-[Fe/H] diagram into 3 stellar populations: the thin disc, the high-$\alpha$ metal-poor thick disc and the high-$\alpha$ metal-rich thick disc and characterise each of these in the age-chemo-kinematics parameter space. We compare results obtained from different APOGEE data releases and using two recent age determinations. We use the Besan\c{c}on Galaxy model (BGM) to highlight selection biases and mechanisms not included in the model. The thin disc exhibits a flat age-metallicity relation while [$\alpha$/Fe] increases with stellar age. We confirm no correlation between radial and vertical velocities with [Fe/H], [$\alpha$/Fe] and age for each stellar population. Considering both samples, V$_\varphi$ decreases with age for the thin disc, while it increases with age for the h$\alpha$mp thick disc. Although the age distribution of the h$\alpha$mr thick disc is very close to that of the h$\alpha$mp thick disc between 7 and 14 Gyr, its kinematics seems to follow that of the thin disc. This feature, not predicted by the hypotheses included in the BGM, suggests a different origin and history for this population. Finally, we show that there is a maximum dispersion of the vertical velocity, $\sigma_Z$, with age for the h$\alpha$mp thick disc around 8 Gyr. We aim to characterize a diverse selection of dense, potentially star-forming cores, clumps, and clouds within the Milky Way in terms of their dust emission and SF activity. We studied 53 fields that have been observed in the JCMT SCUBA-2 continuum survey SCOPE and have been mapped with Herschel. We estimated dust properties by fitting Herschel observations with modified blackbody functions, studied the relationship between dust temperature and dust opacity spectral index $\beta$, and estimated column densities. We extracted clumps from the SCUBA-2 850 $\mu$m maps with the FellWalker algorithm and examined their masses and sizes. Clumps are associated with young stellar objects found in several catalogs. We estimated the gravitational stability of the clumps with virial analysis. The clumps are categorized as unbound starless, prestellar, or protostellar. We find 529 dense clumps, typically with high column densities from (0.3-4.8)$\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, with a mean of (1.5$\pm$0.04)$\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, low temperatures ($T\sim $10-20 K), and estimated submillimeter $\beta$ =1.7$\pm$0.1. We detect a slight increase in opacity spectral index toward millimeter wavelengths. Masses of the sources range from 0.04 $M_\odot$ to 4259 $M_\odot$. Mass, linear size, and temperature are correlated with distance. Furthermore, the estimated gravitational stability is dependent on distance, and more distant clumps appear more virially bound. Finally, we present a catalog of properties of the clumps.Our sources present a large array of SF regions, from high-latitude, nearby diffuse clouds to large SF complexes near the Galactic center. We study the large-scale magnetic field structure and its interplay with the gas dynamics in the Monoceros OB1 East molecular cloud. We combine observations of dust polarised emission from the Planck telescope and CO molecular line emission observations from the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory 14-metre telescope. We calculate the strength of the plane-of-the-sky magnetic field using a modified Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and estimate mass over flux ratios in different regions of the cloud. We use the comparison of the velocity and intensity gradients of the molecular line observations with the polarimetric observations to trace dynamically active regions. The molecular complex shows an ordered large-scale plane-of-the-sky magnetic field structure. In the Northern part, it is mostly orientated along the filamentary structures while the Southern part shows at least two regions with distinct magnetic field orientations. We find that in the Northern filaments the magnetic field is unlikely to provide support against fragmentation at large scales. Our analysis reveals a shock region in the Northern part of the complex right in-between two filamentary clouds which were previously suggested to be in collision. Moreover, the shock seems to extend farther towards the Western part of the complex. In the Southern part, we find that either the magnetic field guides the accretion of interstellar matter towards the cloud or it was dragged by the matter towards the densest regions. The large-scale magnetic field in Monoceros OB-1 East molecular clouds is tightly connected to the global structure of the complex and, in the Northern part, it seems to be dominated by gravity and turbulence, while in the Southern part it influences the structuring of matter., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the first release of the data and compact-source catalogue for the JCMT Large Program SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE). SCOPE consists of 850-um continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353-GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having 3 or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of $N_{H_{2}}$ $>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with YSOs, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. In bright photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated to massive star formation, the presence of dense "clumps" that are immersed in a less dense interclump medium is often proposed to explain the difficulty of models to account for the observed gas emission in high-excitation lines. We aim at presenting a comprehensive view of the modeling of the CO rotational ladder in PDRs, including the high-J lines that trace warm molecular gas at PDR interfaces. We observed the 12CO and 13CO ladders in two prototypical PDRs, the Orion Bar and NGC 7023 NW using the instruments onboard Herschel. We also considered line emission from key species in the gas cooling of PDRs (C+, O, H2) and other tracers of PDR edges such as OH and CH+. All the intensities are collected from Herschel observations, the literature and the Spitzer archive and are analyzed using the Meudon PDR code. A grid of models was run to explore the parameter space of only two parameters: thermal gas pressure and a global scaling factor that corrects for approximations in the assumed geometry. We conclude that the emission in the high-J CO lines, which were observed up to Jup=23 in the Orion Bar (Jup=19 in NGC7023), can only originate from small structures of typical thickness of a few 1e-3 pc and at high thermal pressures (Pth~1e8 K cm-3). Compiling data from the literature, we found that the gas thermal pressure increases with the intensity of the UV radiation field given by G0, following a trend in line with recent simulations of the photoevaporation of illuminated edges of molecular clouds. This relation can help rationalising the analysis of high-J CO emission in massive star formation and provides an observational constraint for models that study stellar feedback on molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 20 pages, 11 figures

The Galactic Cold Cores (GCC) project has made Herschel observations of interstellar clouds where Planck detected compact sources of cold dust emission. Our aim is to characterise the structure of the clumps and their parent clouds. We also examine the accuracy to which the structure of dense clumps can be determined from submillimetre data. We use standard statistical methods to characterise the GCC fields. Clumps are extracted using column density thresholding and we construct for each field a three-dimensional radiative transfer (RT) model. These are used to estimate the relative radiation field intensities, clump stability, and the uncertainty of column density estimates. We examine the radial column density profiles of the clumps. In the GCC fields, the structure noise follows the relations previously established at larger scales. The fractal dimension has no significant dependence on column density and the values D = 1.25 +- 0.07 are only slightly lower than in typical molecular clouds. The column density PDFs exhibit large variations, e.g. in the case of externally compressed clouds. At scales r>0.1 pc, the radial column density distributions of the clouds follow an average relation of N~r^{-1}. In spite of a great variety of clump morphology, clumps tend to follow a similar N~r^{-1} relation below r~0.1 pc. RT calculations indicate only factor of 2.5 variation in the local radiation field intensity. The fraction of gravitationally bound clumps increases significantly in regions with A_V > 5 mag but most bound objects appear to be pressure-confined. The GCC host clouds have statistical properties similar to general molecular clouds. The gravitational stability, peak column density, and clump orientation are connected to the cloud background while most other statistics (e.g. D and radial profiles) are insensitive to the environment., Comment: accepted to A&A, 21 pages (37 pages with appendices, this version including language corrections)

The physical state of cold cloud clumps has a great impact on the process and efficiency of star formation and the masses of the forming stars inside these objects. The sub-millimetre survey of the Planck space observatory and the far-infrared follow-up mapping of the Herschel space telescope provide an unbiased, large sample of these cold objects. We have observed $^{12}$CO(1$-$0) and $^{13}$CO(1$-$0) emission in 35 clumps in 26 Herschel fields sampling different environments in the Galaxy. Densities and temperatures were calculated from both the dust continuum and the molecular line data, kinematic distances were derived using $^{13}$CO line velocities and clump sizes and masses were calculated by fitting 2D Gaussian functions to the optical depth distribution maps. Clump masses and virial masses were estimated assuming an upper and lower limit on the kinetic temperatures and considering uncertainties due to distance limitations. The excitation temperatures are between 8.5$-$19.5 K, while the Herschel-derived dust colour temperatures are 12$-$16 K. The sizes (0.1$-$3 pc), $^{13}$CO column densities (0.5$-$44$\times$10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$) and masses (from less than 0.1 $M_{\odot}$ to more than 1500 $M_{\odot}$) of the objects span broad ranges. Eleven gravitationally unbound clumps were found, many of them smaller than 0.3 pc, but large, parsec-scale clouds with a few hundred solar masses appear as well. Colder clumps have generally high column densities but warmer objects appear at both low and higher column densities. The combination of line and continuum observations can provide vital insights to the formation and fragmentation of filaments and the initial conditions for star formation. We have carried out line observations to map the kinematics of an evolved, actively star forming filament G82.65-2.00. The filament was first identified from the Planck data as a region of particularly cold dust emission and was mapped at 100-500 $\mu$m as a part of Herschel key program Galactic Cold Cores. The observations reveal several velocity components in the field, with strongest line emission concentrated to velocity range $\sim [3,5]$ km $\rm s^{-1}$. The column density of molecular hydrogen along the filament varies from 1.0 to 2.3 $\times 10^{22}$ $\rm cm^{2}$. We have examined six cold clumps from the central part of the filament. The clumps have masses in the range $10 - 20$ $M_{\odot}$ ($\sim70M_{\odot}$ in total) and are close to or above the virial mass. Furthermore, the main filament is heavily fragmented and most of the the substructures have a mass lower than or close to the virial mass, suggesting that the filament is dispersing as a whole. Position-velocity maps of $\rm ^{12}CO$ and $\rm ^{13}CO$ lines indicate that at least one of the striations is kinematically connected to two of the clumps, potentially indicating mass accretion from the striation onto the main filament. Filaments are key for star formation models. As part of the study carried out by the Herschel GCC Programme, here we study the filament properties presented in GCC.VII in context with theoretical models of filament formation and evolution. A conservative sample of filaments at a distance D<500pc was extracted with the Getfilaments algorithm. Their physical structure was quantified according to two main components: the central (Gaussian) region (core component), and the power-law like region dominating the filament column density profile at larger radii (wing component). The properties and behaviour of these components relative to the total linear mass density of the filament and its environmental column density were compared with theoretical models describing the evolution of filaments under gravity-dominated conditions. The feasibility of a transition to supercritical state by accretion is dependent on the combined effect of filament intrinsic properties and environmental conditions. Reasonably self-gravitating (high Mline-core) filaments in dense environments (av\sim3mag) can become supercritical in timescales of t\sim1Myr by accreting mass at constant or decreasing width. The trend of increasing Mline-tot (Mline-core and Mline-wing), and ridge Av with background also indicates that the precursors of star-forming filaments evolve coevally with their environment. The simultaneous increase of environment and filament Av explains the association between dense environments and high Mline-core values, and argues against filaments remaining in constant single-pressure equilibrium states. The simultaneous growth of filament and background in locations with efficient mass assembly, predicted in numerical models of collapsing clouds, presents a suitable scenario for the fulfillment of the combined filament mass-environment criterium that is in quantitative agreement with Herschel observations., Comment: Accepted in A&A

The association of filaments with protostellar objects has made these structures a priority target in star formation studies. The datasets of the Herschel Galactic Cold Cores Key Programme allow for a statistical study of filaments with a wide range of intrinsic and environmental characteristics. Characterisation of this sample can be used to identify key physical parameters and quantify the role of environment in the formation of supercritical filaments. Filaments were extracted from fields at D<500pc with the getfilaments algorithm and characterised according to their column density profiles and intrinsic properties. Each profile was fitted with a beam-convolved Plummer-like function and quantified based on the relative contributions from the filament 'core', represented by a Gaussian, and 'wing' component, dominated by the power-law of the Plummer-like function. These parameters were examined for populations associated with different background levels. We find that filaments increase their core (Mcore) and wing (Mwing) contributions while increasing their total linear mass density (Mtot). Both components appear to be linked to the local environment, with filaments in higher backgrounds having systematically more massive Mcore and Mwing. This dependence on the environment supports an accretion-based model for filament evolution in the local neighbourhood (D<500pc). Structures located in the highest backgrounds develop the highest central Av, Mcore, and Mwing as Mtot increases with time, favoured by the local availability of material and the enhanced gravitational potential. Our results indicate that filaments acquiring a significantly massive central region with Mcore>Mcrit/2 may become supercritical and form stars. This translates into a need for filaments to become at least moderately self-gravitating in order to undergo localised star formation or become star-forming filaments., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The nearby cloud L1642 is one of only two known very high latitude (|b| > 30 deg) clouds actively forming stars. It is a rare example of star formation in isolated conditions, and can reveal important details of star formation in general, e.g., of the effect of magnetic fields. We compare Herschel dust emission structures and magnetic field orientation revealed by Planck polarization maps in L1642. The high-resolution ($\sim20"$) Herschel data reveal a complex structure including a dense, compressed central clump, and low density striations. The Planck polarization data (at 10$'$ resolution) reveal an ordered magnetic field pervading the cloud and aligned with the surrounding striations. There is a complex interplay between the cloud structure and large scale magnetic field. This suggests that the magnetic field is closely linked to the formation and evolution of the cloud. CO rotational emission confirms that the striations are connected with the main clumps and likely to contain material either falling into or flowing out of the clumps. There is a clear transition from aligned to perpendicular structures approximately at a column density of $N_{\rm{H}} = 1.6 \times 10^{21}\, {{\rm cm}}^{-2}$. Extinction remains one of the most reliable methods of measuring column density of nearby Galactic interstellar clouds. The current and ongoing near-infrared surveys enable the mapping of extinction over large sky areas. We produce allsky extinction maps using the 2MASS near-infrared survey. We use the NICER and NICEST methods to convert the near-infrared colour excesses to extinction estimates. The results are presented in Healpix format at the resolutions of 3.0, 4.5, and 12.0 arcmin. The main results of this study are the calculated J-band extinction maps. The comparison with earlier large-scale extinction mappings shows good correspondence but also demonstrates the presence of resolution-dependent bias. A large fraction of the bias can be corrected by using the NICEST method. For individual regions, best extinction estimates are obtained by careful analysis of the local stellar population and the use of the highest resolution afforded by the stellar density. However, the uniform allsky maps should still be useful for many global studies and as the first step into the investigation of individual clouds., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Several methods exist to convert near-infrared (NIR) stellar observations into extinction maps. We present a new method based on NIR multiband observations. The method uses a discretised version of the distribution of intrinsic stellar colours. A number of variations of the basic method are tested, and the results are compared to NICER calculations. When photometric errors are large, the results are close to those of NICER method but some advantages can be seen when the distribution of intrinsic colours cannot be described well with a single covariance matrix. A priori information about relative column density variations at sub-beam scales can result in a significant increase in accuracy. The results may be further improved by considering the magnitude dependence of the intrinsic colours. Thus, the new methods are useful mostly when photometric errors are small, the distribution of intrinsic colours is well known, or one has prior knowledge of the small-scale structures., Comment: Accepted to A&A

In 1985, "During experiments aimed at understanding the mechanisms by which long-chain carbon molecules are formed in interstellar space and circumstellar shells", Harry Kroto and his collaborators serendipitously discovered a new form of carbon: fullerenes. The most emblematic fullerene (i.e. C$_{60}$ "buckminsterfullerene"), contains exactly 60 carbon atoms organized in a cage-like structure similar to a soccer ball. Since their discovery impacted the field of nanotechnologies, Kroto and colleagues received the Nobel prize in 1996. The cage-like structure, common to all fullerene molecules, gives them unique properties, in particular an extraordinary stability. For this reason and since they were discovered in experiments aimed to reproduce conditions in space, fullerenes were sought after by astronomers for over two decades, and it is only recently that they have been firmly identified by spectroscopy, in evolved stars and in the interstellar medium. This identification offers the opportunity to study the molecular physics of fullerenes in the unique physical conditions provided by space, and to make the link with other large carbonaceous molecules thought to be present in space : polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons., Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the annual meeting of the French society of astronomy and astrophysics (SF2A 2015)

The Galactic Cold Cores project has made Herschel observations of 116 fields where the Planck survey has found signs of cold dust emission. The fields contain sources in different environments and different phases of star formation. The dust opacity spectral index beta and the dust colour temperature T are derived using Herschel and Planck data. The relation between beta and T is examined for the whole sample and inside individual fields. Based on IRAS and Planck data, the fields are characterised by a median colour temperature of 16.1 K and a median opacity spectral index of beta=1.84. We observe a clear T-beta anti-correlation. In Herschel observations, constrained at lower resolution by Planck data, the variations follow the column density structure and beta(FIR) can rise to ~2.2 in individual clumps. The Planck 217 GHz band shows a systematic excess that is consistent with a general flattening of the dust emission spectrum at millimetre wavelengths. When fitted separately below and above 700 um, the median spectral index values are beta(FIR) ~ 1.91 and beta(mm) ~ 1.66. The spectral index changes as a function of column density and wavelength. Beta variations are partly masked by temperature gradients and the changes in the intrinsic grain properties may be even greater., Comment: Accepted to A&A, 138 pages

[Abridged] Fullerenes have been recently detected in various circumstellar and interstellar environments, raising the question of their formation pathway. It has been proposed that they can form by the photo-chemical processing of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Following our previous work on the evolution of PAHs in the NGC 7023 reflection nebula, we evaluate, using photochemical modeling, the possibility that the PAH C$_{66}$H$_{20}$ (i.e. circumovalene) can lead to the formation of C$_{60}$ upon irradiation by ultraviolet photons. The chemical pathway involves full dehydrogenation, folding into a floppy closed cage and shrinking of the cage by loss of C$_2$ units until it reaches the symmetric C$_{60}$ molecule. At 10" from the illuminating star and with realistic molecular parameters, the model predicts that 100% of C$_{66}$H$_{20}$ is converted into C$_{60}$ in $\sim$ 10$^5$ years, a timescale comparable to the age of the nebula. Shrinking appears to be the kinetically limiting step of the whole process. Hence, PAHs larger than C$_{66}$H$_{20}$ are unlikely to contribute significantly to the formation of C$_{60}$, while PAHs containing between 60 and 66 C atoms should contribute to the formation of C$_{60}$ with shorter timescales, and PAHs containing less than 60 C atoms will be destroyed. Assuming a classical size distribution for the PAH precursors, our model predicts absolute abundances of C$_{60}$ are up to several $10^{-4}$ of the elemental carbon, i.e. less than a percent of the typical interstellar PAH abundance, which is consistent with observational studies. According to our model, once formed, C$_{60}$ can survive much longer than other fullerenes because of the remarkable stability of the C$_{60}$ molecule at high internal energies.Hence, a natural consequence is that C$_{60}$ is more abundant than other fullerenes in highly irradiated environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. The project Galactic Cold Cores has made Herschel observations of interstellar clouds where the Planck satellite survey has located cold and compact clumps. The sources range from starless clumps to protostellar cores. We examine 116 Herschel fields to estimate the submillimetre dust opacity and its variations. The submillimetre dust opacity was derived from Herschel data, and near-infrared observations of the reddening of background stars are converted into near-infrared optical depth. We studied the systematic errors affecting these parameters and used modelling to correct for the expected biases. The ratio of 250um and J band opacities is correlated with the cloud location and star formation activity. We find a median ratio of tau(250um)/tau(J)= (1.6+-0.2)*10^-3, which is more than three times the mean value in diffuse medium. Assuming a spectral index beta=1.8 instead of beta=2.0, the value would be lower by ~30%. No significant systematic variation is detected with Galactocentric distance or with Galactic height. The tau(250um)/tau(J) maps reveal six fields with clear increase of submillimetre opacity of up to tau(250um)/tau(J) ~ 4*10^-3. These are all nearby fields with spatially resolved clumps of high column density. L1642 is one of the two high galactic latitude (|b| > 30deg) clouds confirmed to have active star formation. We examine the properties of this cloud, especially the large-scale structure, dust properties, and compact sources in different stages of star formation. We present high-resolution far-infrared and submm observations with the Herschel and AKARI satellites and mm observations with the AzTEC/ASTE telescope, which we combined with archive data from near- and mid-infrared (2MASS, WISE) to mm observations (Planck). The Herschel observations, combined with other data, show a sequence of objects from a cold clump to young stellar objects at different evolutionary stages. Source B-3 (2MASS J04351455-1414468) appears to be a YSO forming inside the L1642 cloud, instead of a foreground brown dwarf, as previously classified. Herschel data reveal striation in the diffuse dust emission around L1642. The western region shows striation towards NE and has a steeper column density gradient on its southern side. The densest central region has a bow-shock like structure showing compression from the west and a filamentary tail extending towards east. The differences suggest that these may be spatially distinct structures, aligned only in projection. We derive values of the dust emission cross-section per H nucleon for different regions of the cloud. Modified black-body fits to the spectral energy distribution of Herschel and Planck data give emissivity spectral index beta values 1.8-2.0 for the different regions. The compact sources have lower beta values and show an anticorrelation between T and beta. Markov chain Monte Carlo calculations demonstrate the strong anticorrelation between beta and T errors and the importance of mm Planck data in constraining the estimates. Sub-millimetre dust emission is an important tracer of density N of dense interstellar clouds. One has to combine surface brightness information at different spatial resolutions, and specific methods are needed to derive N at a resolution higher than the lowest resolution of the observations. Some methods have been discussed in the literature, including a method (in the following, method B) that constructs the N estimate in stages, where the smallest spatial scales being derived only use the shortest wavelength maps. We propose simple model fitting as a flexible way to estimate high-resolution column density maps. Our goal is to evaluate the accuracy of this procedure and to determine whether it is a viable alternative for making these maps. The new method consists of model maps of column density (or intensity at a reference wavelength) and colour temperature. The model is fitted using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, comparing model predictions with observations at their native resolution. We analyse simulated surface brightness maps and compare its accuracy with method B and the results that would be obtained using high-resolution observations without noise. The new method is able to produce reliable column density estimates at a resolution significantly higher than the lowest resolution of the input maps. Compared to method B, it is relatively resilient against the effects of noise. The method is computationally more demanding, but is feasible even in the analysis of large Herschel maps. The proposed empirical modelling method E is demonstrated to be a good alternative for calculating high-resolution column density maps, even with considerable super-resolution. Sub-millimetre dust emission provides information on the physics of interstellar clouds and dust. Noise can produce anticorrelation between the colour temperature T_C and the spectral index beta. This must be separated from the intrinsic beta(T) relation of dust. We compare methods for the analysis of the beta(T) relation. We examine sub-millimetre observations simulated as simple modified black body emission or using 3D radiative transfer modelling. In addition to chi^2 fitting, we examine the results of the SIMEX method, basic Bayesian model, hierarchical models, and one method that explicitly assumes a functional form for beta(T). All methods exhibit some bias. Bayesian method shows significantly lower bias than direct chi^2 fits. The same is true for hierarchical models that also result in a smaller scatter in the temperature and spectral index values. However, significant bias was observed in cases with high noise levels. Beta and T estimates of the hierarchical model are biased towards the relation determined by the data with the highest S/N ratio. This can alter the recovered beta(T) function. With the method where we explicitly assume a functional form for the beta(T) relation, the bias is similar to the Bayesian method. In the case of an actual Herschel field, all methods agree, showing some degree of anticorrelation between T and beta. The Bayesian method and the hierarchical models can both reduce the noise-induced parameter correlations. However, all methods can exhibit non-negligible bias. We study the chemistry of small hydrocarbons in the photon-dominated regions (PDRs) associated with the ultra-compact HII region Mon R2. Our goal is to determine the variations of the abundance of small hydrocarbons in a high-UV irradiated PDR and investigate their chemistry. We present an observational study of CH, CCH and c-C$_3$H$_2$ in Mon R2 combining data obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope and Herschel. We determine the column densities of these species, and compare their spatial distributions with that of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). We compare the observational results with different chemical models to explore the relative importance of gas-phase, grain-surface and time-dependent chemistry in these environments. The emission of the small hydrocarbons show different patterns. The CCH emission is extended while CH and c-C$_3$H$_2$ are concentrated towards the more illuminated layers of the PDR. The ratio of the column densities of c-C$_3$H$_2$ and CCH shows spatial variations up to a factor of a few, increasing from $N(c-C$_3$H$_2$)/N(CCH)\approx0.004$ in the envelope to a maximum of $\sim0.015-0.029$ towards the 8$\mu$m emission peak. Comparing these results with other galactic PDRs, we find that the abundance of CCH is quite constant over a wide range of G$_0$, whereas the abundance of c-C$_3$H$_2$ is higher in low-UV PDRs. In Mon R2, the gas-phase steady-state chemistry can account relatively well for the abundances of CH and CCH in the most exposed layers of the PDR, but falls short by a factor of 10 to reproduce c-C$_3$H$_2$. In the molecular envelope, time-dependent effects and grain surface chemistry play a dominant role in determining the hydrocarbons abundances. Various studies have emphasized variations of the charge state and composition of the interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) population in photodissociation regions (PDRs). We aim to model the spatial evolution of the charge and hydrogenation states of PAHs in PDRs. We focus on the specific case of the north-west (NW) PDR of NGC 7023 and also discuss the case of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). The physical conditions in NGC 7023 NW are modelled using a state-of-the-art PDR code. We then use a new PAH chemical evolution model that includes recent experimental data on PAHs and describes multiphoton events. We consider a family of compact PAHs bearing up to 96 carbon atoms. The calculated ionization ratio is in good agreement with observations in NGC 7023 NW. Within the PDR, PAHs evolve into three major populations: medium-sized PAHs (5090) can be superhydrogenated, and smaller species (Nc<50) are fully dehydrogenated. In the cavity, where the fullerene C60 was recently detected, all the studied PAHs are found to be quickly fully dehydrogenated. PAH chemical evolution exhibits a complex non-linear behaviour as a function of the UV radiation field because of multiphoton events. Steady state for hydrogenation is reached on timescales ranging from less than a year for small PAHs, up to 10000 years for large PAHs at Av=1. We identified critical reactions that need more studies. Our new model allows us to rationalize the observational constraints without any fitting parameter. PAHs smaller than 50 carbon atoms are not expected to survive in the NGC 7023 NW PDR. A similar conclusion is obtained for the diffuse ISM. Carbon clusters turn out to be end products of PAH photodissociation, and the evolution of these clusters needs to be investigated further to evaluate their impact on the chemical and physical evolution of PDRs., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures; Accepted for publication in A&A

Context. Mon R2 is the only ultracompact HII region (UCHII) where the associated photon-dominated region (PDR) can be resolved with Herschel. Due to its brightness and proximity, it is the best source to investigate the chemistry and physics of highly UV-irradiated PDRs. Aims. Our goal is to estimate the abundance of H2O and NH3 in this region and investigate their origin. Methods. We present new observations obtained with HIFI and the IRAM-30m telescope. Using a large velocity gradient approach, we model the line intensities and derive an average abundance of H2O and NH3 across the region. Finally, we model the line profiles with a non-local radiative transfer model and compare these results with the abundance predicted by the Meudon PDR code. Results. The variations of the line profiles and intensities indicate complex geometrical and kinematical patterns. The H2O lines present a strong absorption at the ambient velocity and emission in high velocity wings towards the HII region. The spatial distribution of the o-H2^18O line shows that the its emission arises in the PDR surrounding the HII region. By modeling the o-H2^18O emission we derive a mean abundance of o-H2O of ~10^-8 relative to H2. The ortho-H2O abundance is however larger, ~1x10^-7, in the high velocity wings. Possible explanations for this larger abundance include an expanding hot PDR and/or an outflow. Ammonia seems to be present only in the envelope with an average abundance of ~2x10^-9 relative to H2. Conclusions. The Meudon PDR code can account for the measured water abundance in the high velocity gas as long as we assume that it originates from a <1 mag hot expanding layer of the PDR, i.e. that the outflow has only a minor contribution to this emission. Context. In photo-dissociation regions (PDRs), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) could be produced by evaporation of Very Small Grains (VSGs) by the impinging UV radiation field from a nearby star. Aims. We investigate quantitatively the transition zone between evaporating Very Small Grains (eVSGs) and PAHs in several PDRs. Methods. We study the relative contribution of PAHs and eVSGs to the mid-IR emission in a wide range of excitation conditions. We fit the observed mid-IR emission of PDRs by using a set of template band emission spectra of PAHs, eVSGs and gas lines. The fitting tool PAHTAT (PAH Toulouse Astronomical Templates) is made available to the community as an IDL routine. From the results of the fit, we derive the fraction of carbon f_eVSG locked in eVSGs and compare it to the intensity of the local UV radiation field. Results. We show a clear decrease of f_eVSG with increasing intensity of the local UV radiation field, which supports the scenario of photo-destruction of eVSGs. Conversely, this dependence can be used to quantify the intensity of the UV radiation field for different PDRs, including non resolved ones. Conclusions. PAHTAT can be used to trace the intensity of the local UV radiation field in regions where eVSGs evaporate, which correspond to relatively dense (nH = [100, 10^5 ] cm-3) and UV irradiated PDRs (G0 = [100, 5x10^4]) where H2 emits in rotational lines., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. We investigate the physics and chemistry of the gas and dust in dense photon-dominated regions (PDRs), along with their dependence on the illuminating UV field. Using Herschel-HIFI observations, we study the gas energetics in NGC 7023 in relation to the morphology of this nebula. NGC 7023 is the prototype of a PDR illuminated by a B2V star and is one of the key targets of Herschel. Our approach consists in determining the energetics of the region by combining the information carried by the mid-IR spectrum (extinction by classical grains, emission from very small dust particles) with that of the main gas coolant lines. In this letter, we discuss more specifically the intensity and line profile of the 158 micron (1901 GHz) [CII] line measured by HIFI and provide information on the emitting gas. We show that both the [CII] emission and the mid-IR emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) arise from the regions located in the transition zone between atomic and molecular gas. Using the Meudon PDR code and a simple transfer model, we find good agreement between the calculated and observed [CII] intensities. HIFI observations of NGC 7023 provide the opportunity to constrain the energetics at the surface of PDRs.
