1. Capsular block syndrome: a case report and literature review

Methods: The literature was reviewed to summarize the diagnosis, classification, use of diagnostic aids, and the current treatments for this complication.Results: A 69-year-old patient complained of decreased visual acuity 11 months after undergoing phacoemulsification. She was found to have a secondary myopization. Anterior segment ultrabiomicroscopy confirmed the diagnosis of capsular block syndrome. The patient underwent neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy, which resulted in complete resolution of her symptoms.Conclusion: Capsular block syndrome is a fairly rare complication of phacoemulsification procedures that, depending primarily on the timing of its occurrence following surgery, can develop into one of the three following possible clinical scenarios: intraoperatory, early postoperatory, and late postoperatory. In this patient, Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was shown to be a safe and effective treatment option for this type of complication. La composición y variación de la riqueza del complejo de larvas Melolonthidae se examinó en cuatro circunstancias agroecológicas en los municipios de Caldono y Buenos Aires, Cauca (1400 a 1500 m.s.n.m, 21,5ºC. y 2000 mm/año de precipitación promedio). Quincenalmente, durante un año, se visitaron parcelas de media hectárea de yuca, pastizal, cafetal y bosque, en cada parcela y ocasión se realizaron 10 muestreos ( 1m2 por 15 cm de profundidad). Se colectaron 10.261 larvas pertenecientes a 32 especies y 12 géneros de Melolonthidae, así: Phyllophaga, Plectris, Astaena, Macrodactylus, Ceraspis, Barybas, Isonychus, Anomala Callistethus, Strigoderma, Leucothyreus, Cyclocephala. La riqueza de especies presentó variaciones estadísticamente significativas entre localidades (F=87.24 p =2.72-18), muestreos (F=22.29 p =5.18-13), parcelas (F= 23.39 p=1.40-13) así como entre la mayoría de interacciones. Los promedios de riqueza fueron: yuca (4.5 ), pastizal (3.6), café (2.1) y bosque (2.2), cada uno con grandes fluctuaciones que hicieron la diferencia. Se discuten las curvas de isodensidades de cada parcela y sus implicaciones en el programa de manejo. Abstract Richness of the white-grub complex (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) in agroecosystems of the Cauca province, Colombia. The composition and variation in the richness of the complex of rhizophagous Melolonthidae larvae was examinated in four agroecological zones in the Municipality of Caldono (1400-1500 m, 21.5ºC, average rainfall 2000 mm/yr) with complementary surveys in the neighbouring site of Buenos Aires, Cauca. Half-hectare plots (cassava, pastures, coffee and wooded areas) were selected and visited every 15 days (total of 15 visits per plot), and a total of 10 samples were taken (1 m2 by 15 cm deep). In total, 10,261 larvae of 32 species were collected: Phyllophaga, Plectris, Astaena, Macrodactylus, Ceraspis, Barybas, Isonychus, Anomala Callistethus, Strigoderma, Leucothyreus, Cyclocephala. The richness of species varied significantly among sites (F=87.24; p =2.72-18), samples (F=22.29; p=5.18-13), plots (F=23.39; p=1.40-13). In most cases, the average rates for richness were: pastures (3.6), cassava (4.5), coffee (2.11) and wooded areas (2.2). They all had substantial fluctuations, which accounts for the differences. Abstract

The detection of habitable worlds is one of humanity's greatest endeavors. So far, astrobiological studies show that one of the most critical components for life development is liquid water. Its chemical properties and its capacity to dissolve and hence transport other substances makes this constituent a key piece in the development of life. As a consequence, looking for life as we know it is directly related to the search for liquid water. For a remote detection of life in distant planetary systems, this means looking for planets in the so-called habitable zone. In this sense, K-dwarf stars are the perfect hosts. Contrary to G-dwarfs, the habitable zone is closer, thus making planet detection easier using transit or radial velocity techniques. Contrary to M-dwarfs, the stellar activity is much smaller, hence having a smaller impact in both the detectability and in the true habitability of the planet. Also, K-dwarfs are the quietest in terms of oscillations, and granulation noise. Despite this, there is a dearth of planets in the habitable zone of K-dwarfs due to a lack of observing programs devoted to this parameter space. In response to a call for Legacy Programs of the Calar Alto observatory, we have started the first dedicated and systematic search for habitable planets around K-dwarfs, the K-dwarfs Orbited By habitable Exoplanets (KOBE). This survey is monitoring the radial velocity of 50 carefully pre-selected K-dwarfs with the CARMENES instrument along 5 semesters with an average of 90 data points per target. Based on planet occurrence rates convolved with our detectability limits, we expect to find $1.68\pm 0.25$ planets per star in the KOBE sample and in half of the sample we expect to find one of those planets within the habitable zone. Abstract

The normalized $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) cross section ratio has been measured using the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber from the reaction threshold to $30$~MeV. The fissionTPC is a two-volume MICROMEGAS time projection chamber that allows for full three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles from neutron-induced fission. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, where the neutron energy is determined from neutron time-of-flight. The $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) ratio reported here is the first cross section measurement made with the fissionTPC, and will provide new experimental data for evaluation of the $^{238}$U(n,f) cross section, an important standard used in neutron-flux measurements. Use of a development target in this work prevented the determination of an absolute normalization, to be addressed in future measurements. Instead, the measured cross section ratio has been normalized to ENDF/B-VIII.$\beta$5 at 14.5 MeV.

Abstract

We study long-range correlations and trends in time series extracted from the data of seismic events occurred from 1973 to 2011 in a rectangular region that contains mainly all the continental part of Colombia. The long-range correlations are detected by the calculation of the Hurst exponents for the time series of interevent intervals, separation distances, depth differences and magnitude differences. By using a modification of the classical $R/S$ method that has been developed to detect short-range correlations in time series, we find the existence of persistence for all the time series considered except for magnitude differences. We find also, by using the $DFA$ until the third order, that the studied time series are not influenced by trends. 13. Exploring Drivers of Wildfires in Spain

Abstract

Wildfires play a dual role in ecosystems by providing ecological benefits while posing catastrophic events; they also inflict non-catastrophic damage and yield long-term effects on biodiversity, soil quality, and air quality, among other factors, including public health. This study analysed the key determinants of wildland fires in Spain using openly available spatial data from 2008 to 2021, including fire perimeters, bioclimatic variables, topography, and socioeconomic datasets, at a resolution of 1 km2. Our methodology combined principal component analysis (PCA), linear regression analysis, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Our findings show that scrub/herbaceous vegetation (average 63 ± 1.45% SE) and forests (average 19 ± 0.76% SE) have been highly susceptible to wildfires. The population density exhibited a robust positive correlation with wildfire frequency (R2 = 0.88, p < 0.0001). Although the study provides insights into some fire-related climatic drivers over Spain, it includes only temperature- and precipitation-based variables and does not explicitly consider fuel dynamics. Therefore, a more advanced methodology should be applied in the future to understand the local specifics of regional wildfire dynamics. Our study identified that scrub/herbaceous areas and forests near densely populated regions should be prioritised for wildfire management in Spain, particularly under changing climate conditions.

Abstract

The fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) is a compact (15 cm diameter) two-chamber MICROMEGAS TPC designed to make precision cross section measurements of neutron-induced fission. The actinide targets are placed on the central cathode and irradiated with a neutron beam that passes axially through the TPC inducing fission in the target. The 4$\pi$ acceptance for fission fragments and complete charged particle track reconstruction are powerful features of the fissionTPC which will be used to measure fission cross sections and examine the associated systematic errors. This paper provides a detailed description of the design requirements, the design solutions, and the initial performance of the fissionTPC.

Abstract

We present here CAFE, the Calar Alto Fiber-fed Echelle spectrograph, a new instrument built at the Centro Astronomico Hispano Alem\'an (CAHA). CAFE is a single fiber, high-resolution ($R\sim$70000) spectrograph, covering the wavelength range between 3650-9800\AA. It was built on the basis of the common design for Echelle spectrographs. Its main aim is to measure radial velocities of stellar objects up to $V\sim$13-14 mag with a precision as good as a few tens of $m s^{-1}$. To achieve this goal the design was simplified at maximum, removing all possible movable components, the central wavelength is fixed, so the wavelentgth coverage; no filter wheel, one slit and so on, with a particular care taken in the thermal and mechanical stability. The instrument is fully operational and publically accessible at the 2.2m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory. In this article we describe (i) the design, summarizing its manufacturing phase; (ii) characterize the main properties of the instrument; (iii) describe the reduction pipeline; and (iv) show the results from the first light and commissioning runs. The preliminar results indicate that the instrument fulfill the specifications and it can achieve the foreseen goals. In particular, they show that the instrument is more efficient than anticipated, reaching a $S/N\sim$20 for a stellar object as faint as $V\sim$14.5 mag in $\sim$2700s integration time. The instrument is a wonderful machine for exoplanetary research (by studying large samples of possible systems cotaining massive planets), galactic dynamics (high precise radial velocities in moving groups or stellar associations) or astrochemistry., Comment: 12 pages, 23 figures; Acepted for publishing in A&A, 2013

The Calar Alto Observatory, located at 2168m height above the sea level in continental Europe, holds a significant number of astronomical telescopes and experiments, covering a large range of the electromagnetic domain, from gamma-ray to near-infrared. It is a very well characterized site, with excellent logistics. Its main telescopes includes a large suite of instruments. At the present time, new instruments, namely CAFE, PANIC and Carmenes, are under development. 22. Effect of solution annealing temperature on the localised corrosion behaviour of a modified super austenitic steel produced in an open-air atmosphere

Abstract

Two annealing heat treatments were investigated regarding localised corrosion behaviour on Nb and Mn-bearing super austenitic stainless steel. The material was designed based on physical metallurgical principles supported by Thermo-Calc modelling and was produced in an open-air atmosphere based on pre-sorted SS scrap plus ferroalloys elements. The production method aims for metal waste valorisation considering small foundries without an atmosphere-controlled process. Secondary phases at annealing temperatures were experimentally analysed by different microstructural characterisation methods and correlated by the Thermo-Calc modelling. In addition, electrochemical techniques and SKPFM were used to study the relationship between observed phases and localised corrosion performance. As the main results, a good correlation was observed between Thermo-Calc calculations and the microstructural characterisation. In particular, M23C6 carbides, sigma phase, and Nb-MX were identified for the sample treated at 1120 degrees C, while for the sample treated at 1180 degrees C, sigma phase and Nb-MX were identified, no M23C6 were detected. As regards localised corrosion behaviour, the M23C6 carbides and a phase for sample 1120 degrees C generated Cr and Mo depletion zones and diminished the corrosion resistance in corrosive aqueous solutions. In the case of sample 1180 degrees C, the a-phase with a smaller size and volume fraction than sample 1120 degrees C was observed, leading to a more uniform Cr and Mo distribution through the microstructure, obtaining high corrosion resistance and showing promising corrosion behaviour, similar to commercial SS 254smo considering its production in open-air., QC 20230403

45. Multidisciplinary preventive intervention for breast cancer-related lymphedema: An international consensus

Abstract

Objective To establish a consensus regarding the multidisciplinary prevention of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), taking into account the expert opinion of professional groups from across the world involved in the identification and treatment of breast cancers. Methods International consensus study involving a modified nominal group and Delphi process. A total of 50 preventive strategies representing those used by a range of health disciplines involved in breast cancer care were identified by the nominal group. These strategies were categorised into four subgroups (general recommendations, therapeutic approach, rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy and dietary recommendations) and presented in survey format to a multidisciplinary panel of experts in a two-round Delphi process. Eleven specialist areas and 15 countries were represented on the panel. Results Twenty-seven experts responded to both Delphi rounds, and the mean overall agreement after Round 2 was 85.7%. Of the 50 proposed strategies for preventing BCRL, 48 yielded consensus among experts. Conclusion We report an international consensus for the multidisciplinary prevention of BCRL, setting out recommendations aimed at systematising the care of women with breast cancer. The consensus could provide a platform for the development of standardised clinical guidelines.

50. Disease modification in ankylosing spondylitis with TNF inhibitors: spotlight on early phase clinical trials

Abstract

Introduction Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease whose main hallmark is involvement of the axial skeleton. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the first line treatment; however, their use is limited because of side effects. Tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) are a safe and effective therapy, and they have been approved for the management of AS. Areas covered This is a review of the efficacy of TNFi in disease modification in AS. It is focused on results from early-phase clinical trials; however, it also discusses the most relevant findings in order to optimize anti-TNF treatment. A literature search was done using PubMed, Medline, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane library, looking for scientific publications from inception to August 2021. Further information was retrieved from ClinicalTrial.gov and Clinicaltrialsregister.eu. Expert opinion TNFi have demonstrated short- and long-term improvements in all aspects of disease activity, as well as physical function in patients with AS. They have drastically revolutionized the management of the disease; and even though new drugs have become available in the market, TNFi has not been displaced for the treatment of AS, and still constitute the best alternative when NSAIDs are no-longer an option.
