We present a flare star catalog from four years of non-targeted millimeter-wave survey data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT). The data were taken with the SPT-3G camera and cover a 1500-square-degree region of the sky from $20^{h}40^{m}0^{s}$ to $3^{h}20^{m}0^{s}$ in right ascension and $-42^{\circ}$ to $-70^{\circ}$ in declination. This region was observed on a nearly daily cadence from 2019-2022 and chosen to avoid the plane of the galaxy. A short-duration transient search of this survey yields 111 flaring events from 66 stars, increasing the number of both flaring events and detected flare stars by an order of magnitude from the previous SPT-3G data release. We provide cross-matching to Gaia DR3, as well as matches to X-ray point sources found in the second ROSAT all-sky survey. We have detected flaring stars across the main sequence, from early-type A stars to M dwarfs, as well as a large population of evolved stars. These stars are mostly nearby, spanning 10 to 1000 parsecs in distance. Most of the flare spectral indices are constant or gently rising as a function of frequency at 95/150/220 GHz. The timescale of these events can range from minutes to hours, and the peak $\nu L_{\nu}$ luminosities range from $10^{27}$ to $10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the SPT-3G frequency bands.

The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun are known for their space weather and geomagnetic consequences. Among all CMEs, so-called radio-loud (RL) and halo CMEs are considered the most energetic in the sense that they are usually faster and wider than the general population of CMEs. Hence the study of RL and halo CMEs has become important and the prediction of their occurrence rate in a future cycle will give a warning in advance. In the present paper, the occurrence rates of RL and halo CMEs in solar cycle (SC) 25 are predicted. For this, we obtained good correlations between the numbers of RL and halo CMEs in each year and the yearly mean sunspot numbers in the previous two cycles. The predicted values of sunspot numbers in SC 25 by NOAA/NASA were considered as representative indices and the corresponding numbers of RL and halo CMEs have been determined using linear relations. Our results show that the maximum number of RL and halo CMEs will be around 39 $/pm$ 3 and 45 $/pm$ 4, respectively. Removing backside events, a set of front-side events was also considered separately and the front-side events alone in SC 25 are predicted again. The peak values of front-side RL and halo events have been estimated to be around 31 $/pm$ 3 and 29 $/pm$ 3 respectively. Using the data obtained from XMM-Newton, we show the gradual evolution of two periodicities of ~4500 s and ~2200 s in the decay phase of the flare observed in a solar analog EK Dra. The longer period evolves firstly for first 14 ks, while the shorter period evolves for next 10 ks in the decay phase. We find that these two periodicities are associated with the magnetoacoustic waves triggered in the flaring region. The flaring loop system shows cooling and thus it is subjected to the change in the scale height and the acoustic cut-off period. This serves to filter the longer period magnetoacoustic waves and enables the propagation of the shorter period waves in the later phase of the flare. Standing long-period (with the periods longer than several minutes) oscillations in large hot (with the temperature higher than 3 MK) coronal loops have been observed as the quasi-periodic modulation of the EUV and microwave intensity emission and the Doppler shift of coronal emission lines, and have been interpreted as standing slow magnetoacoustic (longitudinal) oscillations. Quasi-periodic pulsations of shorter periods, detected in thermal and non-thermal emissions in solar flares could be produced by a similar mechanism. We present theoretical modelling of the standing slow magnetoacoustic mode, showing that this mode of oscillation is highly sensitive to peculiarities of the radiative cooling and heating function. We generalised the theoretical model of standing slow magnetoacoustic oscillations in a hot plasma, including the effects of the radiative losses, and accounting for plasma heating. The heating mechanism is not specified and taken empirically to compensate the cooling by radiation and thermal-conduction. It is shown that the evolution of the oscillations is described by a generalised Burgers equation. Numerical solution of an initial value problem for the evolutionary equation demonstrates that different dependences of the radiative cooling and plasma heating on the temperature lead to different regimes of the oscillations, including growing, quasi-stationary and rapidly decaying. Our findings provide a theoretical foundation for probing the coronal heating function, and may explain the observations of decayless long-period quasi-periodic pulsations in flares. In this paper, we present observations and analysis of an interesting sigmoid formation, eruption and the associated flare that occurred on 2014 April 18 using multi-wavelength data sets. We discuss the possible role of the sigmoid eruption in triggering the flare, which consists of two different set of ribbons: parallel ribbons as well as a large-scale quasi-circular ribbon. Several observational evidence and nonlinear force-free field extrapolation results show the existence of a large-scale fan-spine type magnetic configuration with a sigmoid lying under a section of the fan dome. The event can be explained with the following two phases. During the pre-flare phase, we observed the formation and appearance of sigmoid via tether-cutting reconnection between the two sets of sheared fields under the fan dome. The second, main flare phase, features the eruption of the sigmoid, the subsequent flare with parallel ribbons, and a quasi-circular ribbon. We propose the following multi-stage successive reconnections scenario for the main flare. First, tether-cutting reconnection is responsible for the formation and the eruption of the sigmoid structure. Second, the reconnection occurred in the wake of the erupting sigmoid produces the parallel flare ribbons on the both sides of the circular polarity inversion line. Third, the null-type reconnection higher in the corona, possibly triggered by the erupting sigmoid, leads to the formation of a large quasi-circular ribbon. We investigate quasi-periodic coronal pulsations during the decay phase of an X 3.2 class flare on 14 May 2013, using soft X-ray data from the RHESSI satellite. Periodogram analyses of soft X-ray light curves show that 53 s and 72 s periods co-exist in the 3-6, 6-12 and 12-25 KeV energy bands. Considering the typical length of the flaring loop system and observed periodicities, we find that they are associated with multiple (first two harmonics) of fast magnetoacoustic sausage waves. The phase relationship of soft X-ray emissions in different energy bands using cross-correlation technique show that these modes are standing in nature as we do not find the phase lag. Considering the period ratio, we diagnose the local plasma conditions of the flaring region by invoking MHD seismology. Despite many studies on how geometry can be used to control the electronic properties of graphene, certain limitations to fabrication of designed graphene nanostructures exist. Here, we demonstrate controlled topographical replication of graphene by artificial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) nanostructures. Owing to the high degree of geometrical freedom of DNA nanostructures, we controlled the nanoscale topography of graphene. The topography of graphene replicated from DNA nanostructures showed enhanced thermal stability and revealed an interesting negative temperature coefficient of sheet resistivity when underlying DNA nanostructures were denatured at high temperatures., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Pentacene has been used widely in organic devices, and the interface structure between pentacene and a substrate is known to significantly influence device performances. Here we demonstrate that molecular ordering of pentacene on graphene depends on the interaction between graphene and its underlying SiC substrate. The adsorption of pentacene molecules on zero-layer and single-layer graphene, which were grown on a Sifaced 6H-SiC(0001) wafer, was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Pentacene molecules form a quasi-amorphous layer on zero-layer graphene which interacts strongly with the underlying SiC substrate. In contrast, they form a uniformly ordered layer on the single-layer graphene having a weak graphene-SiC interaction. Furthermore, we could change the configuration of pentacene molecules on the singlelayer graphene by using STM tips. The results suggest that the molecular ordering of pentacene on graphene and the pentacene/graphene interface structure can be controlled by a graphene-substrate interaction., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

To measure the magnetic field strength in the solar corona, we examined 10 fast (> 1000 km/s) limb CMEs which show clear shock structures in SOHO/LASCO images. By applying piston-shock relationship to the observed CME's standoff distance and electron density compression ratio, we estimated the Mach number, Alfven speed, and magnetic field strength in the height range 3 to 15 solar radii (Rs). Main results from this study are: (1) the standoff distance observed in solar corona is consistent with those from a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and near-Earth observations; (2) the Mach number as a shock strength is in the range 1.49 to 3.43 from the standoff distance ratio, but when we use the density compression ratio, the Mach number is in the range 1.47 to 1.90, implying that the measured density compression ratio is likely to be underestimated due to observational limits; (3) the Alfven speed ranges from 259 to 982 km/s and the magnetic field strength is in the range 6 to 105 mG when the standoff distance is used; (4) if we multiply the density compression ratio by a factor of 2, the Alfven speeds and the magnetic field strengths are consistent in both methods; (5) the magnetic field strengths derived from the shock parameters are similar to those of empirical models and previous estimates., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 11 Figures, 1 Table

We discuss the relation between bulk topological invariants and the spectrum of surface states in three dimensional non-interacting topological insulators. By studying particular models, and considering general boundary conditions for the electron wavefunction on the crystal surface, we demonstrate that using experimental techniques that probe surface states, only strong topological and trivial insulating phases can be distinguished; the latter state being equivalent to a weak topological insulator. In a strong topological insulator, only the {\it parity} of the number of surface states, but not the number itself, is robust against time-reversal invariant boundary perturbations. We present a detailed multi-wavelength analysis and interpretation of the evolution of an M7.6 flare on October 24, 2003. The X-ray observations of the flare taken from the RHESSI spacecraft reveal two phases of the flare evolution. The first phase is characterized by the altitude decrease of the X-ray looptop (LT) source for $\sim$11 minutes. Such a long duration of the descending LT source motion is reported for the first time. The EUV loops, located below the X-ray LT source, also undergo contraction with similar speed ($\sim$15 km s$^{-1}$) in this interval. During the second phase the two distinct hard X-ray footpoints (FP) sources are observed which correlate well with UV and H$\alpha$ flare ribbons. The X-ray LT source now exhibits upward motion. The RHESSI spectra during the first phase are soft and indicative of hot thermal emission from flaring loops with temperatures $T>25$ MK at the early stage. On the other hand, the spectra at high energies ($\varepsilon \gtrsim$25 keV) follow hard power laws during the second phase ($\gamma = 2.6-2.8$). We show that the observed motion of the LT and FP sources can be understood as a consequence of three-dimensional magnetic reconnection at a separator in the corona. During the first phase of the flare, the reconnection releases an excess of magnetic energy related to the magnetic tensions generated before a flare by the shear flows in the photosphere. The relaxation of the associated magnetic shear in the corona by the reconnection process explains the descending motion of the LT source. We show that the internal stationary state of a black hole for massless Dirac fields can be represented by an entangled state of collapsing matter and infalling Hawking radiation. This implies that the Horowitz-Maldacena conjecture for the black hole final state originally proposed for the massless scalar fields is also applicable to fermionic fields as well. For an initially mixed state we find that the measure of mixedness is expected to decrease under evaporation.
