Abstract

NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has initiated a program to enhance the participation of historically underrepresented institutions and communities in NASA's mission. Currently known as the NASA SMD Bridge Program, its goal is to establish enduring partnerships among these institutions, research-intensive universities, and NASA centers. There are concerns about using "Bridge" in the program's name, with stakeholders suggesting that it might stigmatize students and mislead applicants about its focus. In this white paper, we address these concerns and conclude that a name change that better reflects the mission of this SMD effort is necessary to address these concerns., Comment: White paper produces as part of NASA's SMD Bridge Program Workshop

7. An improved model of an actively contracting lymphatic vessel composed of several lymphangions: pumping characteristics

Abstract

Using essentially our 2011 numerical model of a multi-lymphangion segment of a collecting lymphatic vessel, but augmented by inclusion of a refractory period and definition of a mid lymphangion pressure, we explore the effect of several parameters on the form of pump function curves. Pump function is sensitively dependent on the shape of the passive constitutive relation between lymphangion diameter and transmural pressure. Maximum flow-rate increases with the diameter scale applied to the constitutive relation and decreases with the pressure scale. Both maximum flow-rate and maximum pressure difference which can be overcome increase as the excess of lymphangion chain inlet pressure over external pressure is reduced, until inlet pressure is low enough that lymphangion collapse intervenes. Abstract

Background: Isolated greater trochanter fractures represent a subset of hip fractures for which diagnostic work-up and treatment algorithms can vary. Magnetic resonance imaging has been described as the definitive method of evaluating fracture extension into the intertrochanteric region. While prophylactic fixation for those with fracture extension may prevent the propagation of the injury, treatment debates remain. This study aimed to assess adherence to protocols at our institution and evaluate outcomes in those whose care deviated from protocol. Methods: In a retrospective analysis, adult patients (≥18 years old) presenting with a greater trochanter fracture over a 7-year period (2015–2021) were identified. Patients were excluded if the injury was periprosthetic, had a ballistic mechanism, or had any concomitant fractures of the femoral head, neck, or shaft identified on plain radiographs. Patient demographics, comorbidities, treatment, and outcomes were tabulated via chart review. Results: In total, 57 isolated greater trochanter fracture patients were included. Of these, 52 patients (91%) had computed tomographic scans, yet only 41 patients (72%) had magnetic resonance imaging completed. In total, 10 of the 41 (24%) patients with magnetic resonance imaging showed <50% fracture line extension, and all of these patients were treated nonoperatively. In contrast, 24 of 41 magnetic resonance imaging patients (59%) showed >50% fracture line extension in both coronal and axial planes, of which 14 (58%) were treated operatively. However, the 10 nonoperative patients with significant fracture extension showed no increased hospital length-of-stay or fracture extension upon follow-up. Conclusions: Our study showed that institutional protocol for diagnostic workup and treatment evaluation for isolated greater trochanter fractures is not consistently followed. However, patients who deviated from treatment protocol showed no elevated risks of fracture propagation. Our study questions the need for magnetic resonance imaging in all isolated greater trochanter fractures, and suggests that protocols be revisited to ensure that workup is optimal for patients and costeffective for the healthcare system itself. 28. An Exploration of Faculty Hiring Practices in Community Colleges

Abstract

With the average age of faculty members exceeding 55, it is expected that "large numbers of community college faculty may retire at virtually the same time and in the near future" (Gahn & Twombly, 2001, p. 260). In the wake of their exodus, it is a reasonable assumption that community colleges will be faced with hiring many new full- and part-time faculty members within the same time frame. Add to this that little information exists regarding the effectiveness of hiring practices, specifically related to the hiring of faculty in community colleges. Past and current practices represent somewhat amorphous processes with little internal consistency among various stages of decision-making. Considering the probable turnover in full-time faculty, and their subsequent replacement, in many cases, by adjuncts, community college leaders must respond to the challenges, both inherent and learned, in the hiring process to ensure quality instruction in light of diminishing legislative support and the significant, long-term financial obligation the institution makes with the hiring of each new faculty member.
