A study investigated the effect of teaching assistant (TA) training and preparation and prior teaching experience on undergraduate students' perceptions and TAs' self-perceptions of nine teaching effectiveness factors. Subjects were 129 TAs in 29 departments at one university. Results reveal that TAs with either K-12 or college teaching experience were consistently rated as more effective. (Author/MSE)

A study compared self-ratings and undergraduate student ratings of graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) on nine factors of teaching effectiveness, examining how math and science GTAs who speak English as their native language (NGTAs) differ from their international counterparts (IGTAs). Three digital precision bathymetric data sets spanning 16.1 yr enabled a long-term analysis of the geometric, migration, and volumetric changes to large bedforms in a 1 k[m.sup.2] region of eastern Long Island Sound. Whereas a 1 yr study of sand wave mechanics during 1987 provided indirect evidence of long-term southwestward transport, this study adds a June 2003 data set and conclusively demonstrates a basinward (southwestward) progression of sand waves between 7 and 17 m in height. In addition, the modus operandi of sand wave migration during various temporal scales involves crestal flexing, crestal rotation, and differential migration along the crest. A volumetric analysis suggests that the sand waves are in a waning phase of migration and early stage of preservation as sea level rises into the basin and flood-dominant tidal currents decrease in strength. This paper examines the circulation rate, the measure of items checked out per unit time, as a more accurate and useful yardstick of circulation activity than monthly volume. The article defines formulas for calculating circulation rates including items/day and items/hour for libraries open different days and hours. Circulation rates can be applied to individual libraries, systems, and categories of materials. Also examined is the utility of the circulation rate as a work load standard to guide staffing for checkout and shelving. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
