Search

Metastable phases present a promising route to expand the functionality of complex materials. Of particular interest are light-induced metastable phases that are inaccessible under equilibrium conditions, as they often host new, emergent properties switchable on ultrafast timescales. However, the processes governing the trajectories to such hidden phases remain largely unexplored. Here, using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the formation of a hidden quantum state in the layered dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ upon photoexcitation. Our results reveal the nonthermal character of the transition governed by a collective charge-density-wave excitation. Utilizing a double-pulse excitation of the structural mode, we show vibrational coherent control of the phase-transition efficiency. Our demonstration of exceptional control, switching speed, and stability of the hidden phase are key for device applications., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

We report the crystal growth and structural and electronic properties of superconducting, van der Waals layered PtTe. Easily cleavable crystals with a plate-like morphology consistent with the layered structure were grown from a platinum rich flux. A consistent determination of $T_c = 0.57$ K is made from the onset of diamagnetism, the zero of resistivity, and the midpoint of the heat capacity jump. The observed behavior is consistent with type-II superconductivity, with upper critical field at $T=0$ estimated using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg theory to be 143 and 65 Oe for fields out of and in the plane, respectively. The heat capacity discontinuity is close to the weak coupling BCS value. Density functional theory calculations and analysis of the electronic structure finds that PtTe is a topological semimetal with numerous surface states, but suggests the superconducting state itself may be topologically trivial. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals a normal-state Fermi surface in remarkable agreement with theory, and confirms the overall topological nature of the material by experimental identification of the surface bands. Together, these findings identify PtTe as an interesting example of a cleavable, topological, and superconducting material.

Topological semimetals are a frontier of quantum materials. In multi-band electronic systems, topological band-crossings can form closed curves, known as nodal lines. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling and/or symmetry-breaking operations, topological nodal lines can break into Dirac/Weyl nodes and give rise to novel transport properties, such as the chiral anomaly and giant anomalous Hall effect. Recently the time-reversal symmetry-breaking induced Weyl fermions are observed in a kagome-metal Co3Sn2S2, triggering interests in nodal-line excitations in multiband kagome systems. Here, using first-principles calculations and symmetry based indicator theories, we find six endless nodal lines along the stacking direction of kagome layers and two nodal rings in the kagome plane in nonmagnetic Ni3 In2 S2 . The linear dipsersive electronic structure, confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, induces large magnetoresistance up to 2000% at 9 T. Electronic flat band systems are a fertile platform to host correlation-induced quantum phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity, magnetism and topological orders. While flat band has been established in geometrically frustrated structures, such as the kagome lattice, flat band-induced correlation effects especially in those multi-orbital bulk systems are rarely seen. Here we report negative magnetoresistance and signature of ferromagnetic fluctuations in a prototypical kagome metal CoSn, which features a flat band in proximity to the Fermi level. We find that the magnetoresistance is dictated by electronic correlations via Fermi level tuning. Combining with first principles and model calculations, we establish flat band-induced correlation effects in a multi-orbital electronic system, which opens new routes to realize unconventional superconducting and topological states in geometrically frustrated metals.

The combination of non-trivial band topology and symmetry breaking phases gives rise to novel quantum states and phenomena such as topological superconductivity, quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion electrodynamics. Evidence of intertwined charge density wave (CDW) and superconducting order parameters has recently been observed in a novel kagome material AV3Sb5 (A=K,Rb,Cs) that features a Z2 topological invariant in the electronic structure. However, the origin of the CDW and its intricate interplay with topological state has yet to be determined. Here, using hard x-ray scattering, we demonstrate a three-dimensional (3D) CDW with 2*2*2 superstructure in (Rb,Cs)V3Sb5. Unexpectedly, we find that the CDW fails to induce acoustic phonon anomalies at the CDW wavevector but yields a novel Raman mode which quickly damps into a broad continuum below the CDW transition temperature. Our observations exclude strong electron-phonon coupling driven CDW in AV3Sb5 and point to an unconventional and electronic-driven mechanism that couples the CDW and the topological band structure.

Surface magnetism and its correlation with the electronic structure are critical to understand the gapless topological surface state in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Here, using static and time resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we find a significant ARPES intensity change together with a gap opening on a Rashba-like conduction band. Comparison with a model simulation strongly indicates that the surface magnetism on cleaved MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is the same as its bulk state. The coexistence of surface ferromagnetism and a gapless TSS uncovers the novel complexity of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ that may be responsible for the low quantum anomalous Hall temperature of exfoliated MnBi$_2$Te$_4$.

The experimental realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetically-doped (Bi, Sb)2Te3 films stands out as a landmark of modern condensed matter physics. However, ultra-low temperatures down to few tens of mK are needed to reach the quantization of Hall resistance, which is two orders of magnitude lower than the ferromagnetic phase transition temperature of the films. Here, we systematically study the band structure of V-doped (Bi, Sb)2Te3 thin films by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and show unambiguously that the bulk valence band (BVB) maximum lies higher in energy than the surface state Dirac point. Our results demonstrate clear evidence that localization of BVB carriers plays an active role and can account for the temperature discrepancy.

Fermi surface topology and pairing symmetry are two pivotal characteristics of a superconductor. Superconductivity in one monolayer (1ML) FeSe thin film has attracted great interest recently due to its intriguing interfacial properties and possibly high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) over 77 K. Here, we report high-resolution measurements of the Fermi surface and superconducting gaps in 1ML FeSe using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Two ellipse-like electron pockets are clearly resolved overlapping with each other at the Brillouin zone corner. The superconducting gap is nodeless but moderately anisotropic, which put strong constraints on determining the pairing symmetry. The gap maxima locate along the major axis of ellipse, which cannot be explained by a single d-wave, extended s-wave, or s$\pm$ gap function. Four gap minima are observed at the intersection of electron pockets suggesting the existence of either a sign change or orbital-dependent pairing in 1ML FeSe., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The intriguing role of nematicity in iron-based superconductors, defined as broken rotational symmetry below a characteristic temperature, is an intensely investigated contemporary subject. Nematicity is closely connected to the structural transition, however, it is highly doubtful that the lattice degree of freedom is responsible for its formation, given the accumulating evidence for the observed large anisotropy. Here we combine molecular beam epitaxy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy together to study the nematicity in multilayer FeSe films on SrTiO3. Our results demonstrate direct connection between electronic anisotropy in momentum space and standing waves in real space at atomic scale. The lifting of orbital degeneracy of dxz/dyz bands gives rise to a pair of Dirac cone structures near the zone corner, which causes energy-independent unidirectional interference fringes, observed in real space as standing waves by scattering electrons off C2 domain walls and Se-defects. On the other hand, the formation of C2 nematic domain walls unexpectedly shows no correlation with lattice strain pattern, which is induced by the lattice mismatch between the film and substrate. Our results establish a clean case that the nematicity is driven by electronic rather than lattice degrees of freedom in FeSe films., Comment: After more STM and ARPES measurements, we find the interpretation of the unidirectional interference fringes is not correct. We performed ultrafast time-resolved near-infrared pump, resonant soft X-ray diffraction probe measurements to investigate the coupling between the photoexcited electronic system and the spin cycloid magnetic order in multiferroic TbMnO3 at low temperatures. We observe melting of the long range antiferromagnetic order at low excitation fluences with a decay time constant of 22.3 +- 1.1 ps, which is much slower than the ~1 ps melting times previously observed in other systems. To explain the data we propose a simple model of the melting process where the pump laser pulse directly excites the electronic system, which then leads to an increase in the effective temperature of the spin system via a slower relaxation mechanism. Despite this apparent increase in the effective spin temperature, we do not observe changes in the wavevector q of the antiferromagnetic spin order that would typically correlate with an increase in temperature under equilibrium conditions. We suggest that this behavior results from the extremely low magnon group velocity that hinders a change in the spin-spiral wavevector on these time scales., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We present time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the charge density wave system CeTe$_{3}$. Optical excitation transiently populates the unoccupied band structure and reveals a gap size of 2$\Delta$ = 0.59 eV. The occupied Te-5p band dispersion is coherently modified by three modes at $\Omega_{1}$ = 2.2 THz, $\Omega_{2}$ = 2.7 THz and $\Omega_{3}$ = 3 THz. All three modes lead to small rigid energy shifts whereas $\Delta$ is only affected by $\Omega_{1}$ and $\Omega_{2}$. Their spatial polarization is analyzed by fits of a transient model dispersion and DFT frozen phonon calculations. We conclude that the modes $\Omega_{1}$ and $\Omega_{2}$ result from in-plane ionic lattice motions, which modulate the charge order, and that $\Omega_{3}$ originates from a generic out-of-plane $A_{1g}$ phonon. We thereby demonstrate how the rich information from trARPES allows identification of collective modes and their spatial polarization, which explains the mode-dependent coupling to charge order., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Nematic state, where the system is translationally invariant but breaks the rotational symmetry, has drawn great attentions recently due to experimental observations of such a state in both cuprates and iron-based superconductors. The mechanism of nematicity that is likely tied to the pairing mechanism of high-Tc, however, still remains controversial. Here, we studied the electronic structure of multilayer FeSe film by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We found that the FeSe film enters the nematic state around 125 K, while the electronic signature of long range magnetic order has not been observed down to 20K indicating the non-magnetic origin of the nematicity. The band reconstruction in the nematic state is characterized by the splitting of the dxz and dyz bands. More intriguingly, such energy splitting is strong momentum dependent with the largest band splitting of ~80meV at the zone corner. The simple on-site ferro-orbital ordering is insufficient to reproduce the nontrivial momentum dependence of the band reconstruction. Instead, our results suggest that the nearest-neighbor hopping of dxz and dyz is highly anisotropic in the nematic state, the origin of which holds the key in understanding the nematicity in iron-based superconductors., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Ultrafast light pulses can modify the electronic properties of quantum materials by perturbing the underlying, intertwined degrees of freedom. In particular, iron-based superconductors exhibit a strong coupling among electronic nematic fluctuations, spins, and the lattice, serving as a playground for ultrafast manipulation. Here we use time-resolved x-ray scattering to measure the lattice dynamics of photo-excited BaFe2As2. Upon optical excitation, no signature of an ultrafast change of the crystal symmetry is observed, but the lattice oscillates rapidly in time due to the coherent excitation of an A1g mode that modulates the Fe-As-Fe bond angle. We directly quantify the coherent lattice dynamics and show that even a small photo-induced lattice distortion can induce notable changes in the electronic and magnetic properties. Our analysis implies that transient structural modification can generally be an effective tool for manipulating the electronic properties of multi-orbital systems, where electronic instabilities are sensitive to the orbital character of bands near the Fermi level.

Single unit cell films of iron selenide (1UC FeSe) grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates have recently shown superconducting energy gaps opening at temperatures close to the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (77 K), a record for iron-based superconductors. Towards understanding why Cooper pairs form at such high temperatures, a primary question to address is the role, if any, of the STO substrate. Here, we report high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results which reveal an unexpected and unique characteristic of the 1UC FeSe/STO system: shake-off bands suggesting the presence of bosonic modes, most likely oxygen optical phonons in STO, which couple to the FeSe electrons with only small momentum transfer. Such coupling has the unusual benefit of helping superconductivity in most channels, including those mediated by spin fluctuations. Our calculations suggest such coupling is responsible for raising the superconducting gap opening temperature in 1UC FeSe/STO. We investigate the order parameter dynamics of the stripe-ordered nickelate, La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_4$, using time-resolved resonant X-ray diffraction. In spite of distinct spin and charge energy scales, the two order parameters' amplitude dynamics are found to be linked together due to strong coupling. Additionally, the vector nature of the spin sector introduces a longer re-orientation time scale which is absent in the charge sector. These findings demonstrate that the correlation linking the symmetry-broken states does not unbind during the non-equilibrium process, and the time scales are not necessarily associated with the characteristic energy scales of individual degrees of freedom., Comment: 4 figures. We investigate the bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ by temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission. We find a narrow-gap correlated insulator, with spectral features indicative of a polaronic ground state, strikingly similar to that observed previously for the parent compounds of the cuprate superconductors. We additionally observe similar behaviour for the single-layer cousin Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, indicating that strong electron-boson coupling dominates the low-energy excitations of this exotic family of materials, and providing a microscopic link between the insulating ground states of the seemingly-disparate 3d cuprates and 5d iridates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. A detailed phenomenology of low energy excitations is a crucial starting point for microscopic understanding of complex materials such as the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Because of its unique momentum-space discrimination, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is ideally suited for this task in the cuprates where emergent phases, particularly superconductivity and the pseudogap, have anisotropic gap structure in momentum space. We present a comprehensive doping-and-temperature dependence ARPES study of spectral gaps in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212), covering much of the superconducting portion of the phase diagram. In the ground state, abrupt changes in near-nodal gap phenomenology give spectroscopic evidence for two potential quantum critical points, p$=$0.19 for the pseudogap phase and p$=$0.076 for another competing phase. Temperature dependence reveals that the pseudogap is not static below T$_c$ and exists p$>$0.19 at higher temperatures. Our data imply a revised phase diagram which reconciles conflicting reports about the endpoint of the pseudogap in the literature, incorporates phase competition between the superconducting gap and pseudogap, and highlights distinct physics at the edge of the superconducting dome., Comment: to appear in PNAS

The interplay between superconductivity and the pseudogap is an important aspect of cuprate physics. However, the nature of the pseudogap remains controversial, in part because different experiments have suggested different gap functions. Here we present a photon-energy-dependence angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on Bi$_{1.5}$Pb$_{0.55}$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$. We find that antinodal ARPES spectra at low photon energies are dominated by background signals which can lead to a misevaluation of the spectral gap size. Once background is properly accounted for, independent of photon energy, the antinodal spectra robustly show two coexisting features at different energies dominantly attributed to the pseudogap and superconductivity, as well as an overall spectral gap which deviates from a simple d-wave form. These results support the idea that the spectral gap is distorted due to the competition between the pseudogap and superconductivity.

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the hole-overdoped iron pnictide superconductor KFe2As2, which shows a low Tc of ~4 K. Most of the observed Fermi surfaces show nearly two-dimensional shapes, while a band near the Fermi level shows a strong dispersion along the kz direction and forms a small three-dimensional hole pocket centered at the Z point, as predicted by band-structure calculation. However, hole Fermi surfaces of yz and zx orbital character centered at the \Gamma point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone are smaller than those predicted by the calculation while the other hole Fermi surfaces of xy orbital character is much larger. Clover-shaped hole Fermi surfaces around the corner of the 2D BZ are also larger than those predicted by the calculation. These observations are consistent with the de Haas-van Alphen measurement and indicate orbital-dependent electron correlation effects. The effective masses of the energy bands show moderate to strong enhancement, partly due to electron correlation and partly due to energy shifts from the calculated band structure., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerged in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of its ability to measure material properties at atomic and electronic time scales and create excited states not accessible by the conventional means can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here, combining time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on striped La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, we reveal unforeseen photo-induced phase fluctuations of the charge order parameter. Such fluctuations preserve long-range order without creating topological defects, unlike thermal phase fluctuations near the critical temperature in equilibrium10. Importantly, relaxation of the phase fluctuations are found to be an order of magnitude slower than that of the order parameter's amplitude fluctuations, and thus limit charge order recovery. This discovery of new aspect to phase fluctuation provides more holistic view for the importance of phase in ordering phenomena of quantum matter., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. We demonstrate the capability of growing high quality ultrathin films of the topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 using molecular beam epitaxy. Unlike previous growth techniques, which often pin the Fermi energy in the conduction band for ultrathin samples, our samples remain intrinsic bulk insulators. We characterize these films using in-situ angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which is a direct probe of bandstructure, and ex-situ atomic force microscopy. We find that the conduction band lies above the Fermi energy, indicating bulk insulating behavior with only the surface states crossing EF . We conclude that thermal cracking of Te and Se in our growth leads to higher quality thin films, paving the way for future improvements in growth of topological insulators.

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study twinned and detwinned iron pnictide compound NaFeAs. Distinct signatures of electronic reconstruction are observed to occur at the structural (TS) and magnetic (TSDW) transitions. At TS, C4 rotational symmetry is broken in the form of an anisotropic shift of the orthogonal dxz and dyz bands. The magnitude of this orbital anisotropy rapidly develops to near completion upon approaching TSDW, at which temperature band folding occurs via the antiferromagnetic ordering wave vector. Interestingly, the anisotropic band shift onsetting at TS develops in such a way to enhance the nesting conditions in the C2 symmetric state, hence is intimately correlated with the long range collinear AFM order. Furthermore, the similar behaviors of the electronic reconstruction in NaFeAs and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 suggests that this rapid development of large orbital anisotropy between TS and TSDW is likely a general feature of the electronic nematic phase in the iron pnictides, and the associated orbital fluctuations may play an important role in determining the ground state properties.

We report on the ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order in a single crystal of CuO at a temperature of 207 K in response to strong optical excitation using femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction. In the experiment, a femtosecond laser pulse induces a sudden, nonequilibrium increase in magnetic disorder. After a short delay ranging from 400 fs to 2 ps, we observe changes in the relative intensity of the magnetic ordering diffraction peaks that indicate a shift from a collinear commensurate phase to a spiral incommensurate phase. These results indicate that the ultimate speed for this antiferromagnetic re-orientation transition in CuO is limited by the long-wavelength magnetic excitation connecting the two phases., Comment: Accepted by Physical Review Letters (Dec. 2, 2011)

Knowledge of the gap function is important to understand the pairing mechanism for high-temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) superconductivity. However, Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in the cuprates have reported contradictory gap functions, with FT-STS results deviating strongly from a canonical $d_{x^2-y^2}$ form. By applying an "octet model" analysis to autocorrelation ARPES, we reveal that a contradiction occurs because the octet model does not consider the effects of matrix elements and the pseudogap. This reaffirms the canonical $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap around the node, which can be directly determined from ARPES. Further, our study suggests that the FT-STS reported fluctuating superconductivity around the node at far above $T_\mathrm{c}$ is not necessary to explain the existence of the quasiparticle interference, Comment: 5 pages

In this supporting material for the main paper (the preceding submission), we show, in addition to the related information for the experiments, additional discussion that cannot fit in the main paper (due to the space constraint). It includes further discussion about our experimental observations, wider implications of our main findings with various reported candidates for the pseudogap order, and a simple mean-field argument that favors interpretations based on a finite-Q order (density wave) for the pseudogap seen by ARPES (whether "the pseudogap order" is a single order or contains multiple ingredients, is an independent, open issue). We also include a detailed simulation section, in which we model different candidates (various density wave/nematic order) for the pseudogap order in simple forms using a mean-field approach, and discuss their partial success as well as limitations in describing the experimental observations. These simulations are based on a tight-binding model with parameters fitted globally (and reasonably well) to the experimental band dispersions (by tracking the maximum of the energy distribution curve), which could be useful for further theoretical explorations on this issue.

Nematicity, defined as broken rotational symmetry, has recently been observed in competing phases proximate to the superconducting phase in the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Similarly, the new iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition (i.e. a broken C4 symmetry) that either precedes or is coincident with a collinear spin density wave (SDW) transition in undoped parent compounds, and superconductivity arises when both transitions are suppressed via doping. Evidence for strong in-plane anisotropy in the SDW state in this family of compounds has been reported by neutron scattering, scanning tunneling microscopy, and transport measurements. Here we present an angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of detwinned single crystals of a representative family of electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductors, Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 in the underdoped region. The crystals were detwinned via application of in-plane uniaxial stress, enabling measurements of single domain electronic structure in the orthorhombic state. At low temperatures, our results clearly demonstrate an in-plane electronic anisotropy characterized by a large energy splitting of two orthogonal bands with dominant dxz and dyz character, which is consistent with anisotropy observed by other probes. For compositions x>0, for which the structural transition (TS) precedes the magnetic transition (TSDW), an anisotropic splitting is observed to develop above TSDW, indicating that it is specifically associated with TS. For unstressed crystals, the band splitting is observed close to TS, whereas for stressed crystals the splitting is observed to considerably higher temperatures, revealing the presence of a surprisingly large in-plane nematic susceptibility in the electronic structure., Comment: final version published in PNAS, including supplementary information

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the iron pnictide superconductor KFe2As2 with Tc 4 K. Most of the observed Fermi surfaces show almost two-dimensional shapes, while one of the quasi-particle bands near the Fermi level has a strong dispersion along the kz direction, consistent with the result of a band-structure calculation. However, hole Fermi surfaces \alpha and \zeta are smaller than those predicted by the calculation while other Fermi surfaces are larger. These observations are consistent with the result of a de Haas-van Alphen study and a theoretical prediction on inter-band scattering, possibly indicating many body effects on the electronic structure., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Much progress has been made recently in the study of the effects of electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling in doped insulators using angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), yielding evidence for the dominant role of el-ph interactions in underdoped cuprates. As these studies have been limited to doped Mott insulators, the important question arises how this compares with doped band insulators where similar el-ph couplings should be at work. The archetypical case is the perovskite SrTiO$_3$ (STO), well known for its giant dielectric constant of 10000 at low temperature, exceeding that of La$_2$CuO$_4$ by a factor of 500. Based on this fact, it has been suggested that doped STO should be the archetypical bipolaron superconductor. Here we report an ARPES study from high-quality surfaces of lightly doped SrTiO$_3$. Comparing to lightly doped Mott insulators, we find the signatures of only moderate electron-phonon coupling: a dispersion anomaly associated with the low frequency optical phonon with a $\lambda'\sim0.3$ and an overall bandwidth renormalization suggesting an overall $\lambda'\sim0.7$ coming from the higher frequency phonons. Further, we find no clear signatures of the large pseudogap or small polaron phenomena. These findings demonstrate that a large dielectric constant itself is not a good indicator of el-ph coupling and highlight the unusually strong effects of the el-ph coupling in doped Mott insulators.

In conventional superconductors, a gap exists in the energy absorption spectrum only below the transition temperature (Tc), corresponding to the energy price to pay for breaking a Cooper pair of electrons. In high-Tc cuprate superconductors above Tc, an energy gap called the pseudogap exists, and is controversially attributed either to pre-formed superconducting pairs, which would exhibit particle-hole symmetry, or to competing phases which would typically break it. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies suggest that the pseudogap stems from lattice translational symmetry breaking and is associated with a different characteristic spectrum for adding or removing electrons (particle-hole asymmetry). However, no signature of either spatial or energy symmetry breaking of the pseudogap has previously been observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Here we report ARPES data from Bi2201 which reveals both particle-hole symmetry breaking and dramatic spectral broadening indicative of spatial symmetry breaking without long range order, upon crossing through T* into the pseudogap state. This symmetry breaking is found in the dominant region of the momentum space for the pseudogap, around the so-called anti-node near the Brillouin zone boundary. Through a systematic high resolution angle-resolved photoemission study of the iron pnictide compounds (Ba,Sr)Fe$_2$As$_2$, we show that the electronic structures of these compounds are significantly reconstructed across the spin density wave ordering, which cannot be described by a simple folding scenario of conventional density wave ordering. Moreover, we find that LDA calculations with an incorporated suppressed magnetic moment of 0.5$\mu_{\tiny{\textrm{B}}}$ can match well the details in the reconstructed electronic structure, suggesting that the nature of magnetism in the pnictides is more itinerant than local, while the origin of suppressed magnetic moment remains an important issue for future investigations.

Here we report the first angle-resolved photoemission measurement on nearly optimally-doped multi-layer Tl-based superconducting cuprates (Tl-2212 and Tl-1223) and a comparison study to single layer (Tl-2201) compound. A "kink" in the band dispersion is found in all three compounds but exhibits different momentum dependence for the single layer and multi-layer compounds, reminiscent to that of Bi-based cuprates. This layer number dependent renormalization effect strongly implies that the spin resonance mode is unlikely responsible for the dramatic renormalization effect near the antinodal region., Comment: 4 page, 5 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the temperature dependent phonon dispersion in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.4$, 0.6). The in-plane $\Sigma_{4}$ octahedral tilt mode softens significantly at the zone boundary of the high temperature tetragonal (HTT) \textit{I4}$_{\mathit{1}}$\textit{/acd} structure as the temperature approaches the transition to a low temperature orthorhombic (LTO) \textit{Pbca} phase. This behavior is similar to that in La$_2$CuO$_4$, but a new inelastic feature that is not found in the cuprate is present. An anomalous phonon mode is observed at energy transfers greater than the $\Sigma_{4}$ albeit with similar dispersion. This anomalous phonon mode never softens below $\sim 5$ meV, even for temperatures below the HTT-LTO transition. This mode is attributed to the presence of intrinsic structural disorder within the \textit{I4}$_{\mathit{1}}$\textit{/acd} tetragonal structure of the doped ruthenate., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The Fermi surface (FS) of ErTe3 is investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Low temperature measurements reveal two incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) gaps created by perpendicular FS nesting vectors. A large Delta_1 = 175 meV gap arising from a CDW with c* - q_CDW1 ~ 0.70(0) c* is in good agreement with the expected value. A second, smaller Delta_2 = 50 meV gap is due to a second CDW with a* - q_CDW2 ~ 0.68(5) a*. The temperature dependent evolution of the renormalization effect in optimally-doped Bi2212 along the nodal direction has been studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Fine structure is observed in the real part of the self-energy (Re$\Sigma$), including a subkink and maximum, suggesting that electrons couple to a spectrum of bosonic modes, instead of just one mode. Upon cooling through the superconducting phase transition, the fine structures of the extracted Re$\Sigma$ exhibit a two-processes evolution demonstrating an interplay between kink renormalization and superconductivity. We present a detailed ARPES investigation of the RTe3 family, which sets this system as an ideal "textbook" example for the formation of a nesting driven Charge Density Wave (CDW). This family indeed exhibits the full range of phenomena that can be associated to CDW instabilities, from the opening of large gaps on the best nested parts of Fermi Surface (FS) (up to 0.4eV), to the existence of residual metallic pockets. ARPES is the best suited technique to characterize these features, thanks to its unique ability to resolve the electronic structure in k-space. An additional advantage of RTe3 is that the band structure can be very accurately described by a simple 2D tight-binding (TB) model, which allows one to understand and easily reproduce many characteristics of the CDW. In this paper, we first establish the main features of the electronic structure, by comparing our ARPES measurements with Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital band calculations. We use this to define the validity and limits of the TB model. We then present a complete description of the CDW properties and, for the first time, of their strong evolution as a function of R. Using simple models, we are able to reproduce perfectly the evolution of gaps in k-space, the evolution of the CDW wave vector with R and the shape of the residual metallic pockets. Finally, we give an estimation of the CDW interaction parameters and find that the change in the electronic density of states n(Ef), due to lattice expansion when different R ions are inserted, has the correct order of magnitude to explain the evolution of the CDW properties., Comment: 18 pages, 25 figures

The surface structural phases of Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4) are investigated using quantitative Low Energy Electron Diffraction. The broken symmetry at the surface enhances the structural instability against the RuO6 rotational distortion while diminishing the instability against the RuO6 tilt distortion occurring within the bulk crystal. As a result, suppressed structural and electronic surface phase transition temperatures are observed, including the appearance of an inherent Mott metal-to-insulator transition for x = 0.1 and possible modifications of the surface quantum critical point near xc ~ 0.5., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
