4. CC-LR: Providing Interactive, Challenging and Attractive Collaborative Complex Learning Resources

- Abstract
Many researchers argue that students must be meaningfully engaged in the learning resources for effective learning to occur. However, current online learners still report a problematic lack of attractive and challenging learning resources that engage them in the learning process. This endemic problem is even more evident in online collaborative learning approaches whose resources lack of authentic interactivity, user empowerment, social identity and challenge, thus having a negative effect on learners' self-motivation and engagement. To overcome these and other limitations and deficiencies, in this paper, a new type of learning resource named Collaborative Complex Learning Resources (CC-LR) is presented based on the virtualization of collaborative learning with the aim of leveraging knowledge elicited during live sessions. During the CC-LR execution, the collaborative sessions are animated so learners can observe how avatars discuss and collaborate, how discussion threads grow and how knowledge is been constructed, refined and consolidated. In addition, complex aspects of the learning process can be incorporated in the CC-LRs during their creation, such as cognitive assessment and emotional awareness. The system produced from this research is tested to evaluate the CC-LR enriched with complex information and analyze its effects in the discussion process. The research reported in this paper was undertaken within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) European project called "Adaptive Learning via Intuitive/Interactive, Collaborative and Emotional systems".

5. Design of Open-Ferromagnetic Core for Tesla Transformer-Based Pulse Generators

- Abstract
This article details an open-ferromagnetic (OF) core design to be used in a Tesla transformer (TT)-based pulse generator. The core model is designed based on parameters obtained through an analytical design of the TT. Due to the high energy density of the pulse forming line (PFL), the required effective cross-sectional (CS) area of the core to mitigate core saturation is calculated and modeled solely on the structure of the core. Electromagnetic simulations are used to evaluate the performance of the ferromagnetic core in terms of its degree of saturation, ease of fabrication, and the total transformer power loss when used in a pulse generator with an average output power of 4.65 kW.

13. Analytical Design and Simulation of a 9.3-GW Tesla Transformer for HPM Sources

- Abstract
This article presents a step-by-step design and modeling of a high-voltage pulse generator (PG) based on a Tesla transformer (TT) with an open-magnetic core to drive a low-impedance high-power microwave (HPM) source. Our design uses the OFF-resonance mode of operation for higher voltage transformation ratios. The pulse-forming line of the transformer is filled with deionized water for a higher energy density of the line and an increased output pulse duration. Maxwell equations are used to establish the transformer parameters such as the magnetizing and leakage inductances, and subsequently, the geometry of the TT for optimum power transfer between the resonant circuits. The required circuit parameters and geometry of the generator producing up to 250 kV and peak power of 9.3 GW when matched to a 6.7-

International audience; Large-scale climate patterns influenced temperature and weather patterns around the globe in 2011. In particular, a moderate-to-strong La Nina at the beginning of the year dissipated during boreal spring but reemerged during fall. The phenomenon contributed to historical droughts in East Africa, the southern United States, and northern Mexico, as well the wettest two-year period (2010-11) on record for Australia, particularly remarkable as this follows a decade-long dry period. Precipitation patterns in South America were also influenced by La Nina. Heavy rain in Rio de Janeiro in January triggered the country's worst floods and landslides in Brazil's history. The 2011 combined average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was the coolest since 2008, but was also among the 15 warmest years on record and above the 1981-2010 average. The global sea surface temperature cooled by 0.1 degrees C from 2010 to 2011, associated with cooling influences of La Nina. Global integrals of upper ocean heat content for 2011 were higher than for all prior years, demonstrating the Earth's dominant role of the oceans in the Earth's energy budget. In the upper atmosphere, tropical stratospheric temperatures were anomalously warm, while polar temperatures were anomalously cold. This led to large springtime stratospheric ozone reductions in polar latitudes in both hemispheres. Ozone concentrations in the Arctic stratosphere during March were the lowest for that period since satellite records began in 1979. An extensive, deep, and persistent ozone hole over the Antarctic in September indicates that the recovery to pre-1980 conditions is proceeding very slowly. Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations increased by 2.10 ppm in 2011, and exceeded 390 ppm for the first time since instrumental records began. Other greenhouse gases also continued to rise in concentration and the combined effect now represents a 30% increase in radiative forcing over a 1990 baseline. Most ozone depleting substances continued to fall. The global net ocean carbon dioxide uptake for the 2010 transition period from El Nino to La Nina, the most recent period for which analyzed data are available, was estimated to be 1.30 Pg C yr(-1), almost 12% below the 29-year long-term average. Relative to the long-term trend, global sea level dropped noticeably in mid-2010 and reached a local minimum in 2011. The drop has been linked to the La Nina conditions that prevailed throughout much of 2010-11. Global sea level increased sharply during the second half of 2011. Global tropical cyclone activity during 2011 was well-below average, with a total of 74 storms compared with the 1981-2010 average of 89. Similar to 2010, the North Atlantic was the only basin that experienced above-normal activity. For the first year since the widespread introduction of the Dvorak intensity-estimation method in the 1980s, only three tropical cyclones reached Category 5 intensity level-all in the Northwest Pacific basin. The Arctic continued to warm at about twice the rate compared with lower latitudes. Below-normal summer snowfall, a decreasing trend in surface albedo, and above-average surface and upper air temperatures resulted in a continued pattern of extreme surface melting, and net snow and ice loss on the Greenland ice sheet. Warmer-than-normal temperatures over the Eurasian Arctic in spring resulted in a new record-low June snow cover extent and spring snow cover duration in this region. In the Canadian Arctic, the mass loss from glaciers and ice caps was the greatest since GRACE measurements began in 2002, continuing a negative trend that began in 1987. New record high temperatures occurred at 20 m below the land surface at all permafrost observatories on the North Slope of Alaska, where measurements began in the late 1970s. Arctic sea ice extent in September 2011 was the second-lowest on record, while the extent of old ice (four and five years) reached a new record minimum that was just 19% of normal. On the opposite pole, austral winter and spring temperatures were more than 3 degrees C above normal over much of the Antarctic continent. However, winter temperatures were below normal in the northern Antarctic Peninsula, which continued the downward trend there during the last 15 years. In summer, an all-time record high temperature of -12.3 degrees C was set at the South Pole station on 25 December, exceeding the previous record by more than a full degree. Antarctic sea ice extent anomalies increased steadily through much of the year, from briefly setting a record low in April, to well above average in December. The latter trend reflects the dispersive effects of low pressure on sea ice and the generally cool conditions around the Antarctic perimeter.

18. Effect of silymarin plus vitamin E in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. A randomized clinical pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an increasingly recognized health problem. Various treatment strategies such as thiazolidinediones, metformin, lipid-lowering agents and antioxidants have been evaluated. So far, no single intervention has convincingly improved liver histology. Experience of using silymarin alone or in combination with other agents in patients with NAFLD is limited in the medical literature. The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of silymarin plus vitamin E in the treatment of NAFLD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A sample of 36 patients was enrolled. The diagnosis of NAFLD was confirmed by percutaneous liver biopsy. All patients were randomized to one of the following intervention groups: group I: treated with 2 tablets per day of silymarin plus vitamin E (Eu-rosil 85®, MEDAS SL) and a lifestyle modification program consisting of hypocaloric diet (1520 kcal, 52% of carbohydrates, 25% of lipids and 23% of proteins) and exercise for 3 months and group II (only with the hypocaloric diet). Anthro-pometric variables as waist circumference, weight, body mass index (BMI) were measured. Biochemical parameters: Glucose, triglycerides, AST, ALT, GGt levels and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were determined under fasting conditions. Non-invasive NAFLD-index were applied before and after the treatments: Fatty liver index (FLI), liver accumulation product (LAP) and NAFLD-Fibrosis score (FS). RESULTS: The mean age was 47.4 ±11.2 years old (range 18-67); 22 men and 14 women. In group I, 11 patients (61%) have a NAS-score > 5 and 10 (55.5%) in the group II (NS). Anthropometric parameters decreased after treatment in both groups. Patients in both groups showed a decrease in GGt levels after treatment (group I: 68 IU/L vs. 46.2 ± 27 IU/L; p < 0.05 and group II 80.5 ± 46 IU/L vs. 50.3 ± 27 IU/L; p < 0.05). Only in group II we observed a significant decrease in AST and ALT levels. In both groups, we observed a decrease in: FLI index (group I: 86.2 ± 19 vs. 76.9 + 20; p < 0.05 and in group II: 85.2 ± 18 vs. 77.5 ± 23; p < 0.05), and NAFLD-FS index (group I: -1.6 ±1.8 vs. -2.1 ± 1.5; p < 0.05 and in group II -1 ± 1.9 vs. -1.5 ± 2.1; p < 0.05). Patients in group I who did not get a 5% loss of weight also displayed decreased GGt levels, and in the FLI and NAFLD-FS indexes; whereas patients in group II without decrease of 5% by weight showed no improvement in any of the analyzed parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with silymarin plus vitamin E and a hypocaloric diet ameliorate function hepatic test, and non-invasive NAFLD index. Silymarin can be an alternative valid therapeutic option particularly when other drugs are not indicated or have failed or as a complementary treatment associated with other therapeutic programs. Lumbosacral orientation in the sagittal plane is of utmost importance, as it plays a critical role in the function of the spine and the hip joints. Equilibrium of the trunk influences the tridimensional orientation of the acetabulum and the functional range of motion of the hips. Each patient is characterized by a “morphological” parameter named incidence angle; its sagittal balance is the consequence of a postural adaptation for other functional parameters (pelvic tilt, sacral slope, lumbar lordosis, acetabular sagittal tilt, functional anteversion). Understanding variations of the sacral slope on lateral pelvic X-rays is essential for planning total hip arthroplasty and identifying patients at risk of impingement, as lumbosacral posture influences functional anteversion of the acetabulum. Posterior pelvic version as in sitting position (sacral slope decrease) is linked to the increase of the functional acetabular anteversion. Anterior pelvic version as in standing position (sacral slope increase) is linked to the decrease of the functional acetabular anteversion.

- Abstract
The objective of this work was to examine the effect of oxygen plasma treatment on the surface chemistry of carbon fibres. Virgin, unsized high-strength carbon fibres were subjected to oxygen plasma treatments with different degrees of severity. Adsorption of probe molecules with different acid-base characteristics (acetone, carbon tetrachloride, trichloromethane, dichloromethane, diethyl ether, nitromethane, tetrahydrofurane) was measured at 303-353 K using inverse gas chromatography (IGC) at infinite dilution. Plasma treatment brings about increases in the specific free energy of adsorption of either acidic, basic or amphoteric probe molecules, indicating creation of surface functionalities with various acid-base strengths. This helps to justify the improvement in interfacial adhesion in polycarbonate matrix composites following plasma treatment of carbon fibres.

23. Mesophase from a coal tar pitch: a Raman spectroscopy study

- Abstract
Raman spectroscopy has been utilised to detect changes in the structural order accompanying the process of mesophase spherules preparation. A coal tar pitch was selected as the precursor and it was carbonised under the appropriate conditions to produce a discrete amount of anisotropic material present almost completely in the form of spherules. These anisotropic spherules were concentrated by partial removal of the isotropic phase by hot filtration. The analysis by Raman spectroscopy confirmed an increase of the graphene-like orientation from the original coal tar pitch to the final anisotropic concentrate, with the carbonisation semicoke presenting an intermediate behaviour. The results indicate that Raman spectroscopy can be employed to monitor the process of production of mesophase spherules from coal tar pitches by studying the degree of structural order of the resultant product.

24. Effect of temperature on the graphitization process of a semianthracite

In this work, a Spanish semianthracite was graphitized at temperatures ≥2400 °C. The aim of this research was to study the influence of the temperature on the evolution of the structural order of the graphitic materials obtained. Crystalline parameters such as interlayer spacing, d 002 , and domain sizes L c and L a were calculated from X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The intensity ratio of the D and G Raman bands was used to assess the degree of orientation of these materials. Analysis of the XRD and Raman data of the graphitized samples allowed one to conclude that their structural order tend to increase with the temperature of treatment. Interlayer distances d 002 remained almost unchanged in the whole range of temperatures studied. It seems that after a given value of this parameter is reached, improvement of samples' crystallinity is only related to crystallite-size growth. According to the Raman I D / I D + I G ratio, an increase of the bidimensional structural order with the graphitization temperature is observed. The degree of graphitization achieved at the highest temperature employed can be improved by increasing the time of treatment.

- Abstract
This paper studies the pitting corrosion of highly alloyed stainless steels (SS) immersed in an ammonium chloride and diethylamine chloride aqueous solution at temperatures of 25, 40, 60 and 80°C. Four materials were tested: UNS S 31726 SS, UNS S 31254 SS, UNS S 32550 SS and titanium, for comparative purposes. Gravimetric, after immersion up to 103 days, polarisation curves, impedance, SEM, EDX and optical microscopy were the techniques used. UNS S 31726 SS shows the lowest corrosion resistance. UNS S 31254 and UNS S 32550 SSs show similar behaviour. Titanium presents impedance data three orders higher than the other SS materials. The SS materials present a pseudoinductive behaviour on impedance data, associated with an adsorption process of the amine compound which decreases as the temperature increases.

- Abstract
An active power filter connected in series to the power distribution system is presented and analysed. The series active power filter is implemented with a three-phase PWM voltage-source inverter and operates with a resonant LC passive filter connected in parallel to the power lines. The proposed scheme is able to simultaneously compensate current harmonics, the fundamental negative and zero sequence voltage components generated by the voltage source unbalance, and also eliminates the zero sequence current harmonic components that circulate through the neutral conductor. The active power filter is discussed in terms of the principles of operation under steady-state and transient conditions. The design and implementation of the power and control circuits are reported. Key predicted results are verified experimentally on a 5 kVA prototype model.

- Abstract
Owing to the non‐existence of artificial hepatic assistance, retransplantation is the only alternative available to patients who have undergone liver transplantation (LT) when irreversible graft failure occurs. Our initial experience with 60 LTs has resulted in a global survival of 71% among those retransplanted. The causes of graft failure and the progress of retransplanted individuals are discussed.

36. Practical evaluation of different modulation techniques for current-controlled voltage source inverters

- Abstract
The quality of the current waveform generated by a current-controlled, voltage source inverter, depends basically on three factors: (a) the switching frequency of the PWM modulator; (b) the type of current waveform being generated; and (c) the modulation method used. In the paper, three modulation methods, whose characteristics are their simplicity, are analysed: periodical sampling control, hysteresis band control, and triangular carrier control. These three methods have been tested with three different waveform templates: sinusoidal, quasisquare and rectifier compensation current. They are compared in terms of the harmonic content and distortion at the same switching frequency. The paper shows that for sinusoidal current generation, the best method is the triangular carrier, followed by the hysteresis band and the periodical sampling. However, for the other two types of reference templates, the analysis showed that, depending on external factors such as inverter inductance, type of load, or delays in the PWM switching signals, one strategy may be better than the others. The paper shows that each control method is affected in a different way by the switching time delays present in the driving circuitry and in the power semiconductors. The results are analysed and compared, with the help of computer simulations and experimental results.

38. ELECTRON MICROSCOPE AND LOW-ANGLE X-RAY DIFFRACTION STUDIES OF THE NERVE MYELIN SHEATH

- Abstract
1. A close correlation has been obtained between high resolution electron microscopy and low-angle x-ray diffraction studies of the myelin sheath of frog and rat peripheral and central nerves. Extensive studies were performed by application of both techniques to the same specimens, prepared for examination by OsO4 or KMnO4 fixation, and embedding either in methacrylate or in gelatin employing a new procedure. Controlled physical and chemical modifications of the myelin sheath prior to fixation were also investigated. 2. A correspondence was established between the layer spacings observed in electron micrographs and the fundamental radial repeating unit indicated by the low-angle x-ray diffraction patterns. The variations in relative intensities of the low-angle x-ray reflections could be related to the radial density distributions seen in the electron micrographs. 3. An analysis of the preparation procedures revealed that OsO4 fixation introduces a greater shrinkage of the layer spacings and more pronounced changes in the density distribution within the layers than KMnO4 fixation. The effects of methacrylate and gelatin embedding are described, and their relative merits considered in relation to the preservation of myelin structure by OsO4 fixation. 4. The experimental modifications introduced by freezing and thawing of fresh whole nerve are described, particularly the enhancement of the intermediate lines and the dissociation of the layer components in the myelin sheath. A characteristic collapsing of the radial period of the sheath is observed after subjecting fresh nerve trunks to prolonged and intense ultracentrifugation. 5. Controlled extraction of fresh nerve with acetone at 0°C., which preferentially removes cholesterol, produces characteristic, differentiated modifications of the myelin sheath structure. Electron microscopy reveals several types of modifications within a single preparation, including both expanded and collapsed layer systems, and internal rearrangements of the layer components. Alcohol extraction leads to a more extensive structural breakdown, but in certain areas collapsed layer systems can still be observed. The components of the lipide extracts could be identified by means of x-ray diffraction. These modifications emphasize the importance of cholesterol in the myelin structure, and disclose a resistance of the dense osmiophilic lines to lipide solvents. 6. The significance of these structures is discussed in relation to present concepts of the molecular organization of myelin. The available evidence is consistent with the suggestion that the primary site of osmium deposition is at the lipoprotein interfaces and that the light bands probably represent regions occupied by lipide chains. The electron microscope and x-ray diffraction data also indicate the possibility of a regular organization within the plane of the layers, probably involving units of 60 to 80 A. The myelin sheath is regarded as a favourable cell membrane model for detailed analysis by combined application of x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy.

49. Electrodeposited films of YBa2Cu3O7−x on Ag and on SrTiO3: a comparison

- Abstract
Thick films (∼ 30μ) of YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) have been obtained through cationic electrodeposition on silver and on reduced SrTiO3, so as to make it conducting and eliminate the need for a conducting buffer layer (Spanish patent P9802655).The superconducting films morphology is, in both cases, of a columnar type, as shown by SEM, leaving some empty spaces in between the columns. These spaces can be diminished, when silver is used as a substrate, by a multiple sequential electrodeposition. Although the films are then not continuous, critical temperatures are as high as usual (∼ 92 K) and critical currents (as determined by the Bean method) are, in A/cm2, respectively 9 500 for YBCO/Ag and 3 250 for YBCO/SrTiO3.

- Abstract
Among the title materials, the La and Pr-doped ones show an abrupt drop of the resonant area of the Mo¨ssbauer spectra below ∼180K probably associated with the softening of a vibrational mode at the Cu/Fe-Oapicalbond at a pseudo-octahedral (Cu/Fe)O6position. This effect is similar to that observed in some superconducting materials. However, it must be noticed, that the fact that the title materials are not superconducting down to 1.7 K clearly shows that a phonon softening is not necessarily related to superconductivity.
