We prove the equivalence of two-symbol supersaturated designs (SSDs) with $N$ (even) rows, $m$ columns, $s_{\rm max} = 4t +i$, where $i\in\{0,2\}$, $t \in \mathbb{Z}^{\geq 0}$ and resolvable incomplete block designs (RIBDs) whose any two blocks intersect in at most $(N+4t+i)/4$ points. Using this equivalence, we formulate the search for two-symbol E($s^2$)-optimal and minimax-optimal SSDs with $s_{\max} \in \{2,4,6\}$ as a search for RIBDs whose blocks intersect accordingly. This allows developing a bit-parallel tabu search (TS) algorithm. The TS algorithm found E($s^2$)-optimal and minimax-optimal SSDs achieving the sharpest known E($s^2$) lower bound with $s_{\max} \in \{2,4,6\}$ of sizes $(N,m)=(16,25), (16,26), (16,27), (18,23),(18,24),(18,25),(18,26),(18,27),(18, 28),$ $(18,29),(20,21),(22,22),(22,23),(24,24)$, and $(24,25)$. In each of these cases no such SSD could previously be found.

Endoscopy is the most widely used imaging technique for the diagnosis of cancerous lesions in hollow organs. However, endoscopic images are often affected by illumination artefacts: image parts may be over- or underexposed according to the light source pose and the tissue orientation. These artifacts have a strong negative impact on the performance of computer vision or AI-based diagnosis tools. Although endoscopic image enhancement methods are greatly required, little effort has been devoted to over- and under-exposition enhancement in real-time. This contribution presents an extension to the objective function of LMSPEC, a method originally introduced to enhance images from natural scenes. It is used here for the exposure correction in endoscopic imaging and the preservation of structural information. To the best of our knowledge, this contribution is the first one that addresses the enhancement of endoscopic images using deep learning (DL) methods. Tested on the Endo4IE dataset, the proposed implementation has yielded a significant improvement over LMSPEC reaching a SSIM increase of 4.40% and 4.21% for over- and underexposed images, respectively., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. Endoscopy is the most widely used medical technique for cancer and polyp detection inside hollow organs. However, images acquired by an endoscope are frequently affected by illumination artefacts due to the enlightenment source orientation. There exist two major issues when the endoscope's light source pose suddenly changes: overexposed and underexposed tissue areas are produced. These two scenarios can result in misdiagnosis due to the lack of information in the affected zones or hamper the performance of various computer vision methods (e.g., SLAM, structure from motion, optical flow) used during the non invasive examination. The aim of this work is two-fold: i) to introduce a new synthetically generated data-set generated by a generative adversarial techniques and ii) and to explore both shallow based and deep learning-based image-enhancement methods in overexposed and underexposed lighting conditions. Best quantitative results (i.e., metric based results), were obtained by the deep-learnnig-based LMSPEC method,besides a running time around 7.6 fps)

This paper proposes a method to compute camera 6Dof poses to achieve a user defined coverage. The camera placement problem is modeled as a combinatorial optimization where given the maximum number of cameras, a camera set is selected from a larger pool of possible camera poses. We propose to minimize the squared error between the desired and the achieved coverage, and formulate the non-linear cost function as a mixed integer linear programming problem. A camera lens model is utilized to project the cameras view on a 3D voxel map to compute a coverage score which makes the optimization problem in real environments tractable. Jet fires are relatively small and have the least severe effects among the diverse fire accidents that can occur in industrial plants; however, they are usually involved in a process known as the domino effect, that leads to more severe events, such as explosions or the initiation of another fire, making the analysis of such fires an important part of risk analysis. This research work explores the application of deep learning models in an alternative approach that uses the semantic segmentation of jet fires flames to extract main geometrical attributes, relevant for fire risk assessments. A comparison is made between traditional image processing methods and some state-of-the-art deep learning models. It is found that the best approach is a deep learning architecture known as UNet, along with its two improvements, Attention UNet and UNet++. The models are then used to segment a group of vertical jet flames of varying pipe outlet diameters to extract their main geometrical characteristics. Attention UNet obtained the best general performance in the approximation of both height and area of the flames, while also showing a statistically significant difference between it and UNet++. UNet obtained the best overall performance for the approximation of the lift-off distances; however, there is not enough data to prove a statistically significant difference between Attention UNet and UNet++. The only instance where UNet++ outperformed the other models, was while obtaining the lift-off distances of the jet flames with 0.01275 m pipe outlet diameter. In general, the explored models show good agreement between the experimental and predicted values for relatively large turbulent propane jet flames, released in sonic and subsonic regimes; thus, making these radiation zones segmentation models, a suitable approach for different jet flame risk management scenarios.

Risk assessment is relevant in any workplace, however there is a degree of unpredictability when dealing with flammable or hazardous materials so that detection of fire accidents by itself may not be enough. An example of this is the impingement of jet fires, where the heat fluxes of the flame could reach nearby equipment and dramatically increase the probability of a domino effect with catastrophic results. Because of this, the characterization of such fire accidents is important from a risk management point of view. One such characterization would be the segmentation of different radiation zones within the flame, so this paper presents an exploratory research regarding several traditional computer vision and Deep Learning segmentation approaches to solve this specific problem. A data set of propane jet fires is used to train and evaluate the different approaches and given the difference in the distribution of the zones and background of the images, different loss functions, that seek to alleviate data imbalance, are also explored. Additionally, different metrics are correlated to a manual ranking performed by experts to make an evaluation that closely resembles the expert's criteria. The Hausdorff Distance and Adjusted Random Index were the metrics with the highest correlation and the best results were obtained from the UNet architecture with a Weighted Cross-Entropy Loss. These results can be used in future research to extract more geometric information from the segmentation masks or could even be implemented on other types of fire accidents.

Point defects in hexagonal boron nitride have emerged as a promising quantum light source due to their bright and photostable room temperature emission. In this work, we study the incorporation of quantum emitters during chemical vapor deposition growth on a nickel substrate. Combining a range of characterization techniques, we demonstrate that the incorporation of quantum emitters is limited to (001) oriented nickel grains. Such emitters display improved emission properties in terms of brightness and stability. We further utilize these emitters and integrate them with a compact optical antenna enhancing light collection from the sources. The hybrid device yields average saturation count rates of ~2.9 x106 cps and an average photon purity of ~90%. Our results advance the controlled generation of spatially distributed quantum emitters in hBN and demonstrate a key step towards on-chip devices with maximum collection efficiency.

Although automated driving systems have been used frequently, they are still unpopular in society. To increase the popularity of automated vehicles (AVs), assisting pedestrians to accurately understand the driving intentions and improving their perception of safety when interacting with AVs are considered effective. Therefore, the AV should send information about its driving intention to pedestrians when they interact with each other. However, the following questions should be answered regarding how the AV sends the information to them: 1) What timing for an AV to make pedestrians understand its driving intentions after being noticed by them? 2) What timing for an AV to make pedestrians feel safe after being noticed by them? Thirteen participants were invited to interact with a manually driven vehicle and an AV in an experiment. The participants' gaze information and a subjective evaluation of their understanding of the driving intention as well as their perception of safety were collected. By analyzing the participants' gaze duration on the vehicle with their subjective evaluations, we found that the AV should enable the pedestrian to accurately understand its driving intention within 0.5~6.5 [s] and make the pedestrian feel safe within 0.5~8.0 [s] while the pedestrian is gazing at it., Comment: Accepted by IEEE ITSC 2020, 7 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

This paper provides an overview of the current and near-future applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medicine and Health Care and presents a classification according to their ethical and societal aspects, potential benefits and pitfalls, and issues that can be considered controversial and are not deeply discussed in the literature. This work is based on an analysis of the state of the art of research and technology, including existing software, personal monitoring devices, genetic tests and editing tools, personalized digital models, online platforms, augmented reality devices, and surgical and companion robotics. Motivated by our review, we present and describe the notion of 'extended personalized medicine', we then review existing applications of AI in medicine and healthcare and explore the public perception of medical AI systems, and how they show, simultaneously, extraordinary opportunities and drawbacks that even question fundamental medical concepts. Many of these topics coincide with urgent priorities recently defined by the World Health Organization for the coming decade. In addition, we study the transformations of the roles of doctors and patients in an age of ubiquitous information, identify the risk of a division of Medicine into 'fake-based', 'patient-generated', and 'scientifically tailored', and draw the attention of some aspects that need further thorough analysis and public debate.

Interactions between pedestrians and automated vehicles (AVs) will increase significantly with the popularity of AV. However, pedestrians often have not enough trust on the AVs , particularly when they are confused about an AV's intention in a interaction. This study seeks to evaluate if pedestrians clearly understand the driving intentions of AVs in interactions and presents experimental research on the relationship between gaze behaviors of pedestrians and their understanding of the intentions of the AV. The hypothesis investigated in this study was that the less the pedestrian understands the driving intentions of the AV, the longer the duration of their gazing behavior will be. A pedestrian--vehicle interaction experiment was designed to verify the proposed hypothesis. A robotic wheelchair was used as the manual driving vehicle (MV) and AV for interacting with pedestrians while pedestrians' gaze data and their subjective evaluation of the driving intentions were recorded. The experimental results supported our hypothesis as there was a negative correlation between the pedestrians' gaze duration on the AV and their understanding of the driving intentions of the AV. Moreover, the gaze duration of most of the pedestrians on the MV was shorter than that on an AV. Therefore, we conclude with two recommendations to designers of external human-machine interfaces (eHMI): (1) when a pedestrian is engaged in an interaction with an AV, the driving intentions of the AV should be provided; (2) if the pedestrian still gazes at the AV after the AV displays its driving intentions, the AV should provide clearer information about its driving intentions., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures
