Abstract

Background: Inadequate production of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies renders patients with primary immunodeficiency susceptible to infection by numerous pathogens, some of which can lead to severe asthma exacerbation and possible death. These patients who are immunocompromised are often reliant on intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapies, which provide passive antibodies against various respiratory pathogens, including measles virus and encapsulated bacteria. Objective: We conducted a subanalysis of data from a multicenter, multinational, phase III, open-label bioequivalence study to compare protective concentrations oflgG antibodies provided by a 5% and a 10% IVIG product in patients with primary immunodeficiency. Methods: Patients on stable 21- or 28-day regimens of previous IVIG products were assigned to receive study treatment (adults: 5% IVIG and 10% IVIG; children: 10% IVIG) at doses of 300-800 mg/kg per infusion. Trough concentrations of total IgG, IgG subclasses, measles-neutralizing antibodies, and IgG against Haemophilus influenzae type b and Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes were evaluated. Results: A total of 48 patients (33 adidts ages 16-55 years; 15 children ages 2-15 years) were enrolled and received treatment. No statistically significant differences in trough concentrations of total IgG, IgG subclasses, measles-neutralizing antibodies, or IgG directed at encapsulated bacteria were observed between the 5% and 10% formulations in analyses by age (adidt or pediatric) or infusion schedule (every 21 or 28 days). All evaluated patients had trough IgG concentrations above accepted thresholds for protection against disease. Conclusion: These findings support the conclusion that, at dose levels and infusion schedules prescribed in clinical practice, this 5% and 10% IVIG product provided consistent, predictable, and bioequivalent IgG concentrations for adult and pediatric patients with primary immunodeficiency disease. Both formulations delivered trough antibody concentrations of total IgG, measles-neutralizing antibodies, and antibodies against encapsulated bacteria that are above thresholds accepted as protective. This book contains two of John Speed's most important atlases, "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine," and "A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World." Published by Bassett & Chiswell in 1676, it is a late edition of both works which were originally published in 1612 for the Theatre and 1627 for the Prospect. This edition of the Prospect expands the maps from the original 21 maps in the 1627 edition to 28 maps, including new maps of British possessions in North America. These two Speed atlases are considered the most important English language atlases of the 17th century. 17. The Relative Clause in Child Language: A Review. Kansas Working Papers in Linguistics, Volume 3.

Abstract

Studies on the acquisition of relative clauses are reviewed. Two polarities among a variety of possible approaches are: Slobin's (1971) study that emphasizes acquisition process and learning strategies, and studies like Sheldon's (1974) that emphasize the linguistic structures involved. Early proposals that children experience more difficulty in processing discontinuous, as distinct from contiguous elements, have been contradicted by the parallel function hypothesis. More recent studies tend to emphasize an examination of the processing heuristics used by children, and they show that at times children have no adequate processing strategies. Most studies of relative clause acquisition report on experiments in which children were instructed to act out the content of sentences containing relative clauses by manipulating toy animals. By observing children's responses over the course of many experiments, investigators have been able to systematize children's responses into a number code of response types, which can be classified into a particular sentence type. All of the reviewed studies have in common that they suggest new avenues of approach to an understanding of children's acquisition of relative clauses. (SW)

These were of glandular epithelial origin and were widespread throughout the visceral organs. Both animals were found beached and dead within two months and were only 220 km apart.

42. A Thermodynamic Approach to Hormone-Receptor Interaction; Application to Insulin Binding to Adipocytes, Adipocyte Plasma Membranes and Liposomes Incorporating Adipocyte Insulin Receptors

Abstract

The binding of insulin to its receptor in rat adipocyte and isolated plasma membranes has been measured. The adipocyte insulin receptor has been reconstituted in lecithin liposomes and the binding of insulin investigated. A method of interpreting binding data presented as binding vs. the logarithm of free insulin concentration (binding isotherms) in terms of the binding potential concept of Wyman (1965) is described, and the results are compared with the commonly used Scatchard analysis of binding. The binding potential approach enables binding constants and Gibbs energies of formation of the insulin-receptor complex to be determined as a function of insulin bound. The limiting Gibbs energies of binding at 15°C to intact cells, membranes and liposomes were found to be -55, -52 and -49 kJ mol-1 respectively. The affinity of the receptor for insulin decreases smoothly with increase in binding in all three systems. For intact adipocytes the number of insulin receptors per cell is found to be approximately 43,000.
