We discuss the relationships between the outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil at the municipal level and different health, social, demographic, and economic indices. We obtain significant correlations between the data gathered for each municipalitiy and the proportion of cases and deaths by COVID-19 and the results by municipality of the 2018 Brazilian presidential election. We obtain different estimates for the number of deaths caused by central government denialism of scientific facts and measures for mitigation of the pandemic and its the historical, economic, and social roots.

We study how available data on COVID-19 cases and deaths in different countries are reliable. Our analysis is based on a modification of the law of anomalous numbers, the Newcomb-Benford law, applied to the daily number of deaths and new cases in each country. We first revisit the Newcomb-Benford law and show how to avoid false negative compliance of the data. We then compared deviation from this law, to a number of social and economic indices for each country by computing the Spearman rank order correlation between each index and the \c{hi}2 deviation of COVID- 19 data to the modified NB law. A similar analysis for excess deaths for the same countries with sufficient available data was performed. We conclude that in general less democratic, less transparent and more corrupt countries tend to have data of lesser quality. We demonstrate the successive appearance of the exciton, biexciton, and P band of the exciton-exciton scattering with increasing excitation power in the photoluminescence of indium selenide layered crystals. The strict energy and momentum conservation rules of the P band are used to reexamine the exciton binding energy. The new value $\geq 20$ meV is markedly higher than the currently accepted 14 meV, being however well consistent with the robustness of excitons up to room temperature. A peak controlled by the Sommerfeld factor is found near the bandgap ($\sim 1.36$ eV), which puts the question on the pure three-dimensional character of the exciton in InSe, which has been assumed up to now. We use, for the first time, the Detrend Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) to study the correlation properties of the transmitted flux fluctuations, in the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) Forest along the lines of sight (LOS) to QSOs, at different space scales. We consider in our analysis the transmitted flux in the intergalactic medium over the redshift range 2 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 4.5 from a sample of 45 high-quality medium resolution (R $\sim$ 4300) quasar spectra obtained with Echelle Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) mounted on the Keck II 10-m telescope, and from a sample of 19 high-quality high resolution (R $\sim$ 50000) quasar spectra obtained with Ultra-Violet and Visible Echelle Spectrograh (UVES) mounted on the ESO KUEYEN 8.2 m telescope. The result of the DFA method applied to both datasets, shows that there exists a difference in the correlation properties between the short and long-range regimes: the slopes of the transmitted flux fluctuation function are different on small and large scales. The scaling exponents, $\alpha_{1}$ = 1.635$\pm$ 0.115 and $\alpha_{2}$ = 0.758$\pm$ 0.085 for the ESI/Keck sample and $\alpha_{1}$ = 1.763 $\pm 0.128$ and $\alpha_{2}$ = 0.798 $\pm 0.084$ for the UVES/VLT sample for the short and long range regime respectively. The transition between the two regims is observed at about $\sim 1.4 h^{-1} Mpc$ (comoving). The fact that $\alpha_{1}$ is always larger than $\alpha_{2}$ for each spectrum supports the common view that the Universe is smoother on large scales than on small scales. The non detection of considerable variations in the scaling exponents from LOS to LOS confirms that anisotropies cannot be ubiquitous, at least on these scales., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

Multifractal properties of the energy time series of short $\alpha$-helix structures, specifically from a polyalanine family, are investigated through the MF-DFA technique ({\it{multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis}}). Estimates for the generalized Hurst exponent $h(q)$ and its associated multifractal exponents $\tau(q)$ are obtained for several series generated by numerical simulations of molecular dynamics in different systems from distinct initial conformations. All simulations were performed using the GROMOS force field, implemented in the program THOR. The main results have shown that all series exhibit multifractal behavior depending on the number of residues and temperature. Moreover, the multifractal spectra reveal important aspects on the time evolution of the system and suggest that the nucleation process of the secondary structures during the visits on the energy hyper-surface is an essential feature of the folding process., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The proposal of this paper is to provide a simple angular random walk model to build up polypeptide structures, which encompass properties of dihedral angles of folded proteins. From this model, structures will be built with lengths ranging from 125 up to 400 amino acids for the different fractions of secondary structure motifs, which dihedral angles were randomly chosen according to narrow Gaussian probability distributions. In order to measure the fractal dimension of proteins three different cases were analyzed. The first contained alpha-helix structures only, the second beta-strands structures and the third a mix of alpha-helices and beta-sheets. The behavior of proteins with alpha-helix motifs are more compacted than in other situations. The findings herein indicate that this model describes some structural properties of a protein and suggest that randomness is an essential ingredient but proteins are driven by narrow angular Gaussian probability distributions and not by random-walk processes., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Physica A
