9. Complete and Platform-Independent Calling Context Profiling for the Java Virtual Machine

Abstract

Calling context profiling collects statistics separately for each calling context. Complete calling context profiles that faithfully represent overall program execution are important for a sound analysis of program behavior, which in turn is important for program understanding, reverse engineering, and workload characterization. Many existing calling context profilers for Java rely on sampling or on incomplete instrumentation techniques, yielding incomplete profiles; others rely on Java Virtual Machine (JVM) modifications or work only with one specific JVM, thus compromising portability. In this paper we present a new calling context profiler for Java that reconciles completeness of the collected profiles and full compatibility with any standard JVM. In order to reduce measurement perturbation, our profiler collects platform-independent dynamic metrics, such as the number of method invocations and the number of executed bytecodes. In contrast to prevailing calling context profilers, our tool is able to distinguish between multiple call sites in a method and supports selective profiling of (the dynamic extent of) certain methods. We have evaluate the overhead introduced by our profiler with standard Java and Scala benchmarks on a range of different JVMs.

Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the immune system. In this system, T cells play an important role in stimulating the production of antibodies against invading microorganisms. When infection with HIV occurs, a protein on the outer surface of the virus, called gp120, binds to T cells. The gp120 protein enters into the T cell and uses it to make more virus. The net result is T cell destruction and increased virus production. A vaccine to prevent infection with HIV is needed, but has been difficult to produce. The best way to make a vaccine is to use an inactive or killed form of the virus. However, in the case of HIV, it would be dangerous to make the large amounts of virus that would be needed for a vaccine. An alternative method is to use genetic engineering to make large amounts of a specific viral protein that could be used to produce a vaccine. This type of vaccine would be noninfectious and would not be able to transmit disease. This article describes the development of an HIV vaccine made by recombinant DNA methods. The HIV DNA that makes the gp120 protein was inserted into yeast bacteria. Large amounts of the yeast were grown, and the yeast produced large amounts of the gp120 protein. Vaccine was made from a portion of the gp120 protein, known as env2-3, that will not attack and kill T cells. The vaccine was administered to 15 healthy men without HIV infection. It did not suppress the immune systems of the those who were vaccinated, and their T cell counts were normal. The vaccine did stimulate antibody production against the env2-3 protein. However, the amount of antibody in the blood (titer) was very small and would not be sufficient to fight HIV infection. Abstract

A phase 1 trial of a candidate human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-I) vaccine was done in 25 healthy seronegative subjects. The antigen, env2-3 (SF2), was a nonglycosylated polypeptide representing the gp120 region of the env gene of the HIV-l(SF2) isolate. It was produced in genetically engineered yeast as a denatured molecule incapable of binding CD4. A synthetic lipophilic muramyl tripeptide (MTP-PE) was used as an adjuvant. Ten subjects received adjuvant alone and 15 received 50- or 25O-µg doses of env2-3 (SF2) administered intramuscularly in two immunization regimens. In general, adjuvant and vaccine were well tolerated. Antibody responses to both the homologous antigen, env2-3 (SF2), and antigens from other highly divergent HIV isolates were elicited in the majority of vaccine recipients. However, antibody titers were low, without neutralizing activity. In 9 of 11 subjects who received the complete vaccine immunization series, a significant specific T lymphocyte response was observed

Abstract

Calling-context profiles and dynamic metrics at the bytecode level are important for profiling, workload characterization, program comprehension, and reverse engineering. Prevailing tools for collecting calling-context profiles or dynamic bytecode metrics often provide only incomplete information or suffer from limited compatibility with standard JVMs. However, completeness and accuracy of the profiles is essential for tasks such as workload characterization, and compatibility with standard JVMs is important to ensure that complex workloads can be executed. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of JP2, a new tool that profiles both the inter- and intra-procedural control flow of workloads on standard JVMs. JP2 produces calling-context profiles preserving callsite information, as well as execution statistics at the level of individual basic blocks of code. JP2 is complemented with scripts that compute various dynamic bytecode metrics from the profiles. As a case-study and tutorial on the use of JP2, we use it for crossprofiling for an embedded Java processor.

Abstract

Bytecode instrumentation is a widely used technique to implement aspect weaving and dynamic analyses in virtual machines such as the Java virtual machine. Aspect weavers and other instrumentations are usually developed independently and combining them often requires significant engineering effort, if at all possible. In this article, we present polymorphic bytecode instrumentation(PBI), a simple but effective technique that allows dynamic dispatch amongst several, possibly independent instrumentations. PBI enables complete bytecode coverage, that is, any method with a bytecode representation can be instrumented. We illustrate further benefits of PBI with three case studies. First, we describe how PBI can be used to implement a comprehensive profiler of inter-procedural and intra-procedural control flow. Second, we provide an implementation of execution levels for AspectJ, which avoids infinite regression and unwanted interference between aspects. Third, we present a framework for adaptive dynamic analysis, where the analysis to be performed can be changed at runtime by the user. We assess the overhead introduced by PBI and provide thorough performance evaluations of PBI in all three case studies. We show that pure Java profilers like JP2 can, thanks to PBI, produce accurate execution profiles by covering all code, including the core Java libraries. We then demonstrate that PBI-based execution levels are much faster than control flow pointcuts to avoid interference between aspects and that their efficient integration in a practical aspect language is possible. Finally, we report that PBI enables adaptive dynamic analysis tools that are more reactive to user inputs than existing tools that rely on dynamic aspect-oriented programming with runtime weaving.
