Abstract

Scintillators based on Tl salts that provide high densities and high effective atomic numbers are currently being investigated for their possible use in radioisotope identification applications. Ce-doped Tl2LaCl5, in particular, has been the leading compound of those studied, showing good light output and energy resolution. The analogous Tl2CeCl5 has received much less attention, and the information known about it is rather incomplete. This paper focuses on the scintillation and optical properties of Tl2CeCl5 single crystals and compares them to those of Tl2LaCl5:Ce to better evaluate the effect of full substitution of La with Ce.

2. On the degree of irrationality of low genus $K3$ surfaces

Abstract

Given a general polarized $K3$ surface $S\subset \mathbb P^g$ of genus $g\le 14$, we study projections $S\hookrightarrow \mathbb P^g\dashrightarrow \mathbb P^2$ of minimal degree and their variational structure. In particular, we prove that the degree of irrationality of all such surfaces is at most $4$, and that for $g=7,8,9,11$ there are no rational maps $S\dashrightarrow \mathbb P^2$ of degree $3$ induced by the primitive linear system. Our methods combine vector bundle techniques \`a la Lazarsfeld with derived category tools, and also make use of the rich theory of singular curves on $K3$ surfaces., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure. 3. Families of subvarieties of manifolds with a canonical form

Abstract

Suppose $Y$ is a smooth variety equipped with a top form. We prove a simple theorem giving a sharp lower bound on the geometric genus of a family of subvarieties of $Y$, in terms of the dimension of this family. Two elementary applications are presented. On the one hand, we show that for a very general curve $C$ and a very general hypersurface $Y\subset \mathbb P^{n+1}$ of degree $\ge 2n+1$, any map $C \to Y$ is constant. On the other hand, we give a lower bound on the genus of a family of curves with an isotrivial factor in the associated family of Jacobians; we also characterize the families of curves attaining this bound as the families of degree $2$ branched covers of a fixed curve., Comment: 14 pages, comments welcome

4. The polarized degree of irrationality of $K3$ surfaces

Abstract

Given a polarized variety $(X,L)$ we use an elementary observation to produce projections of low degree $ X\subset \mathbb{P}(H^0(L^\vee)) \dashrightarrow \mathbb P ^r $ via vector bundles. For surfaces this observation can be used to show that maps of the degree at most $d$ move in families. In the case of polarized $K3$ surfaces we study projections of the lowest possible degree up to genus $6$ and we give a new upper bound for higher genera. As a different application of our construction we exhibit new rational maps of low degree for some hyper-K\"ahler varieties, abelian varieties and Gushel-Mukai threefolds., Comment: 10 pages, comments are welcome! Abstract

In this paper we compute the gonality and the dimension of the Brill-Noether loci $W^1_d(C)$ for curves in a non primitive linear system of a simple abelian surface, adapting vector bundles techniques \`a la Lazarsfeld originally introduced with $K3$ surfaces. Abstract

We have synthesized several morphologies and crystal structures of MgWO4 using a one-pot hydrothermal method, producing not only monoclinic stars and large nanoparticles but also triclinic wool balls and sub-10 nm nanoparticles. Herein we describe the importance of reaction parameters in demonstrating morphology control of as-prepared MgWO4. Moreover, we correlate structure and composition with the resulting photoluminescence and radioluminescence properties. Specifically, triclinic-phase samples yielded a photoluminescence emission of 421 nm, whereas monoclinic-phase materials gave rise to an emission maximum of 515 nm. The corresponding radioluminescence data were characterized by a broad emission peak, located at 500 nm for all samples. Annealing the wool balls and sub-10 nm particles to transform the crystal structure from a triclinic to a monoclinic phase yielded a radioluminescence (RL) emission signal that was two orders of magnitude greater than that of their unannealed counterparts. Finally, to confirm the practical utility of these materials for biomedical applications, a series of sub-10 nm particles, including as-prepared and annealed samples, were functionalized with biocompatible PEG molecules, and subsequently were found to be readily taken up by various cell lines as well as primary cultured hippocampal neurons with low levels of toxicity, thereby highlighting for the first time the potential of this particular class of metal oxides as viable and readily generated platforms for a range of biomedical applications.

Abstract

Zinc tungstate is a semiconductor known for its favorable photocatalytic, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties, coupled with its relatively low cost, reduced toxicity, and high stability in biological and catalytic environments. In particular, zinc tungstate evinces scintillation properties, namely the ability to emit visible light upon absorption of energetic radiation such as x rays, which has led to applications not only as radiation detectors but also for biomedical applications involving the delivery of optical light to deep tissue, such as photodynamic therapy and optogenetics. Here, we report on the synthesis of zinc tungstate nanorods generated via an optimized but facile method, which allows for synthetic control over the aspect ratio of the as-synthesized anisotropic motifs via rational variation of the solution pH. We investigate the effect of aspect ratio on their resulting photoluminescent and radioluminescent properties. We further demonstrate the potential of these zinc tungstate nanorods for biomedical applications, such as photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment, by analyzing their toxicological profile within cell lines and neurons. Abstract

Li-containing elpasolite scintillators are currently investigated for their ability to detect both thermal neutrons and gamma photons with a single inorganic crystal. The scintillation is typically triggered by using an activator such as Ce. However, when Tl, also a luminescent ion, is present in the matrix, competition between the two centers Tl and Ce can occur. In this study, we are using Ce doped Tl2LiYCl6 to investigate this competition. To this end, the Ce (which substitutes Y) concentration is varied from 0 to 1 in the Tl2LiY1-xCexCl6 composition. In the low concentration range in which Ce remains a dopant, the photo- and radioluminescence spectra show that the scintillation of Tl2LiYCl6:Ce is mostly dominated by recombination on intrinsic luminescent centers. For cerium concentrations higher than x = 0.02, very different emissions can be easily distinguished from the photo- and radioluminescence of undoped and low Ce doped Tl2LiYCl6 crystals. These emissions are attributed to the formation of a second phase Tl2CeCl5, identified by X-ray diffraction. We conclude that the intrinsic luminescence related to Tl dominates the scintillation in the range of concentration for which Ce does substitute on the Y-site.

Abstract

Water-based liquid scintillators (WbLS) present an attractive target medium for large-scale detectors with the ability to enhance the separation of Cherenkov and scintillation signals from a single target. This work characterizes the scintillation properties of WbLS samples based on LAB/PPO liquid scintillator (LS). X-ray luminescence spectra, decay profiles, and relative light yields are measured for WbLS of varying LS concentration as well as for pure LS with a range of PPO concentrations up to 90 g/L. The scintillation properties of the WbLS are related to the precursor LAB/PPO: starting from 90 g/L PPO in LAB before synthesis, the resulting WbLS have spectroscopic properties that instead match 10 g/L PPO in LAB. This could indicate that the concentration of active PPO in the WbLS samples depends on their processing., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

The title compound, thallium magnesium trichloride, has been identified as a scintillator with both moderate gamma-stopping power and moderate light yield. Knowledge of its crystal structure is needed for further development. This work determines the crystal structure of TlMgCl3 to be hexa-gonal P63/mmc (No. 194) and isostructural with RbMgCl3, contrary to previously reported data. This structure was obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and was further confirmed by neutron diffraction measurements. Extending neutron diffraction measurements to high temperature, the data show that TlMgCl3 maintains this crystal structure from 290 K up through 725 K, approaching the melting point of 770 K. Anisotropic thermal expansion coefficients increase over this temperature range, from 31 to 38 × 10-6 K-1 along the a axis and from 19 to 34 × 10-6 K-1 along the c axis.

Abstract

Fibronectin (FN) is a multidomain glycoprotein found in plasma and tissue extracellular matrices (ECM). Plasma FN (pFN) is produced and secreted into the bloodstream by the liver. Liver ECM-FN and pFN are characte,rized by the absence of the EDA domain, one of the three FN exons undergoing alternative splicing. However, in pathological situations such as wound healing, the liver produces and accumulates huge amounts of EDA+FN in sinusoidal ECM. In order to study the functions of the FN isoforms produced by the liver, we used two mouse strains devoid of EDA-exon alternative splicing, which constitutively include (EDA+/+ strain) or exclude (EDA-/- strain) the EDA domain. The EDA+/+ strain is characterized by an important decrease of FN levels both in plasma and tissues. Here, we show that the atypycal presence of the EDA domain in hepatocytes affects pFN secretion into the bloodstream and we demonstrate that a high proportion of tissue ECM-FN is supplied by plasma. In fact, removal of the EDA exon only from the liver, by hepatocyt'-specific deletion of the EDA exon, restores normal levels of FN in both plasma and tissues of the EDA+/+ animals. This finding not only suggests that plasma behaves as a sort of FN reservoir for tissue maintenance but also shows for the first time that the pFN contribution to the ECM of tissues is roughly equal to that produced locally. The EDA-/- strain was used to study the role of the EDA domain in the onset of liver fibrosis. In two different liver fibrosis models, we observed that EDA-/- animals develop attenuated fibrosis in comparison to control mice. The important role of the EDA domain in the activation and proliferation of the hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), these are the key cells responsible for the ECM protein overproduction in the fibrotic processes, is demonstrated for the first time in vivo. EDA-/- livers treated to induce fibrosis, present a striking reduction in the number of myofibroblasts or activated HSCs, suggesting that the EDA domain could be a potential target for the treatment of liver fibrosis.

Abstract

Language and speech alterations have been described in people with Bipolar Disorder (BD), particularly in semantic contents, speed of language, and verbal association. A commonly used method to study lexical retrieval is the Verbal Fluency (VF) task (Lezak, M. D., Howieson, D. B., Loring, D. W., & Fischer, J. S. Neuropsychological assessment. New York: Oxford University Press, USA, 2004.). In its standard form, the participant's performance is rated by the number of correct words (excluding errors and repetitions) produced in one minute for a given cue (either semantic or phonemic). Two previous meta-analysis have synthesized the evidence in the literature showing a possible impairment in VF in BD. However, the high heterogeneity among studies and their inability to demonstrate an effect of the subtype of BD, the type VF task (semantic or phonemic), and the polarity of all mood states on the main outcomes, leaves the topic open for further exploration. In the last few years there has been an extensive number of emerging studies on this topic and no updated meta-analysis has been carried out to our knowledge. The aim of the present study is to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the impairment of VF in individuals with BD as compared with subject without mental disorders (Healthy Controls - HC) in the light of the new evidence.

Abstract

We have synthesized several morphologies and crystal structures of MgWO4 using a one-pot hydrothermal method, producing not only monoclinic stars and large nanoparticles but also triclinic wool balls and sub-10 nm nanoparticles. Herein we describe the importance of reaction parameters in demonstrating morphology control of as-prepared MgWO4. Moreover, we correlate structure and composition with the resulting photoluminescence and radioluminescence properties. Specifically, triclinic-phase samples yielded a photoluminescence emission of 421 nm, whereas monoclinic-phase materials gave rise to an emission maximum of 515 nm. The corresponding radioluminescence data were characterized by a broad emission peak, located at 500 nm for all samples. Annealing the wool balls and sub-10 nm particles to transform the crystal structure from a triclinic to a monoclinic phase yielded an RL emission signal that was two orders of magnitude greater than that of their unannealed counterparts. Finally, to confirm the practical utility of these materials for biomedical applications, a series of sub-10 nm particles, including as-prepared and annealed samples, were functionalized with biocompatible PEG molecules, and subsequently were found to be readily uptaken by various cell lines as well as primary cultured hippocampal neurons with low levels of toxicity, thereby highlighting for the first time the potential of this particular class of metal oxides as viable and readily generated platforms for a range of biomedical applications.

Abstract

Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MNs) encompass a specific sub-group of myeloid malignancies arising after exposure to radio/cytotoxic agents for the treatment of unrelated diseases. Such malignancies present unique features, including advanced age, high comorbidities burden, and unfavorable genetic profiles. All these features justify the need for a specific diagnostic workup and dedicated treatment algorithms. However, as new classification systems recognize the unique clinical characteristics exhibited by t-MN patients, how to assess fitness status in this clinical setting is largely unexplored. Optimizing fitness assessment would be crucial in the management of t-MN patients, considering that factors usually contributing to a worse or better outcome (like age, comorbidities, and treatment history) are patient-specific. In the absence of specific tools for fitness assessment in this peculiar category of AML, the aim of this review is to describe all those factors related to patient, treatment, and disease that allow planning treatments with an optimal risk/benefit ratio.
