Search

Experimental determination of the structure of the superconducting order parameter in the kagome lattice compound CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is an essential step towards understanding the nature of the superconducting pairing in this material. Here we report measurements of the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $\lambda(T)$, in crystals of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ down to $\sim 60\,\mathrm{mK}$. We find that $\lambda(T)$ is consistent with a fully-gapped state but with significant gap anisotropy. The magnitude of the gap minima are in the range $\sim 0.2 - 0.3 T_\mathrm{c}$ for the measured samples, markedly smaller than previous estimates. We discuss different forms of potential anisotropy and how these can be linked to the V and Sb Fermi surface sheets. We highlight a significant discrepancy between the calculated and measured values of $\lambda(T=0)$ which we suggest is caused by spatially suppressed superconductivity.

We present the second data release for the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array eXtended (GLEAM-X) survey. This data release is an area of 12,892-deg^2 around the South Galactic Pole region covering 20h 40m <= RA <= 6h 40m, -90deg <= Dec <= +30deg. Observations were taken in 2020 using the Phase-II configuration of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and covering a frequency range of 72-231MHz with twenty frequency bands. We produce a wideband source-finding mosaic over 170-231MHz with a median root mean squared noise of 1.5 (+1.5/-0.5) mJy beam^(-1). We present a catalogue of 624,866 components, including 562,302 components which are spectrally fit. This catalogue is 98% complete at 50mJy, and a reliability of 98.7% at a 5sigma level, consistent with expectations for this survey. We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). Ternary nitrides are of growing technological importance, with applications as semiconductors, catalysts, and magnetic materials; however, new synthetic tools are needed to advance materials discovery efforts. Here, we show that Zn$_3$WN$_4$ can be synthesized via metathesis reactions between Li$_6$WN$_4$ and Zn$X_2$ ($X$ = Br, Cl, F). In situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry show that the reaction onset is correlated with the Zn$X_2$ melting point and that product purity is inversely correlated with the reaction's exothermicity. High resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction measurements show that this bulk synthesis produces a structure with substantial cation ordering, as opposed to the disordered structure initially discovered via thin film sputtering. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals that Zn$_3$WN$_4$ powders exhibit two optical absorption onsets at 2.5 eV and 4.0 eV, indicating wide-bandgap semiconducting behavior and suggesting a small amount of structural disorder. We hypothesize that this synthesis strategy is generalizable because many potential Li-$M$-N precursors (where $M$ is a metal) are available for synthesizing new ternary nitride materials. This work introduces a promising synthesis strategy that will accelerate the discovery of novel functional ternary nitrides and other currently inaccessible materials.

We have conducted a blind search in 49 consecutive days of interplanetary scintillation observations made by the Murchison Widefield Array from mid-2019, with overlapping daily observations approximately East and South-East of the Sun at an elongation of $\sim$30 degrees and a field of view of 30 degrees. These observations detect an unprecedented density of sources. In spite of these observations being taken at sunspot minimum, this search has revealed several interesting transitory features characterised by elevated scintillation levels. One solar wind enhancement is captured in two observations several hours apart, allowing its radial movement away from the Sun to be measured. We present here a methodology for measuring the plane-of-sky velocity for the moving heliospheric structure. The plane-of-sky velocity was inferred as $0.66\pm0.147\,^{\text{o}}\text{hr}^{-1}$, or $480\pm106\,\text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1}$ assuming a distance of 1AU. After cross-referencing our observed structure with multiple catalogues of heliospheric events, we propose that the likely source of our observed structure is a stream-interaction region originating from a low-latitude coronal hole. This work demonstrates the power of widefield interplanetary scintillation observations to capture detailed features in the heliosphere which are otherwise unresolvable and go undetected., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We present a new measurement of the positive muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu - 2)/2$, from the Fermilab Muon $g\!-\!2$ Experiment using data collected in 2019 and 2020. We have analyzed more than 4 times the number of positrons from muon decay than in our previous result from 2018 data. The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, $\omega_a$. From the ratio $\omega_a / \tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, together with precisely determined external parameters, we determine $a_\mu = 116\,592\,057(25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). Combining this result with our previous result from the 2018 data, we obtain $a_\mu\text{(FNAL)} = 116\,592\,055(24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). The new experimental world average is $a_\mu (\text{Exp}) = 116\,592\,059(22)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm), which represents a factor of 2 improvement in precision., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Monte Carlo Application Toolkit (MCATK) commonly uses surface tracking on a structured mesh to compute scalar fluxes. In this mode, higher fidelity requires more mesh cells and isotopes and thus more computational overhead -- since every time a particle changes cells, new cross-sections must be found for all materials in a given cell -- even if no collision occurs in that cell. We implement a hybrid version of Woodcock (delta) tracking on this imposed mesh to alleviate the number of cross-section lookups. This algorithm computes an energy-dependent microscopic majorant cross section is computed for the problem. Each time a particle enters a new cell, rather than computing a true macroscopic cross-section over all isotopes in the cell, the microscopic majorant cross-section is simply multiplied by the total number density of the cell to obtain a macroscopic majorant cross-section for the cell. Delta tracking is then performed within that single cell. This increases performance with minimal code changes, speeding up the solve time by a factor of 1.5 -- 1.75 for k-eigenvalue simulations and 1.2 -- 1.6 for fixed source simulations in a series of materially complex criticality benchmarks., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, M&C 2023 ANS conference

To find deterministic solutions to the transient $S_N$ neutron transport equation, iterative schemes are typically used to treat the scattering (and fission) source terms. We explore the one-cell inversion iteration scheme to do this on the GPU and make comparisons to a source iteration scheme. We examine convergence behavior, through the analysis of spectral radii, of both one-cell inversion and source iterations. To further boost the GPU parallel efficiency, we derive a higher-order discretization method, simple corner balance (in space) and multiple balance (in time), to add more work to the threads and gain accuracy. Fourier analysis on this higher-order numerical method shows that it is unconditionally stable, but it can produce negative flux alterations that are critically damped through time. We explore a whole-problem (in all angle and all cell) sparse linear algebra framework, for both iterative schemes, to quickly produce performant code for GPUs. Despite one-cell inversion requiring additional iterations to convergence, those iterations can be done faster to provide a significant speedup over source iteration in quadrature sets at or below $S_{128}$. Going forward we will produce a two-dimensional implementation of this code to experiment with memory and performance impacts of a whole-problem framework including methods of synthetic acceleration and pre-conditioners for this scheme, then we will begin making direct comparisons to traditionally implemented source iteration in production code., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, M&C 2023 ANS conference

We discuss the current development of MC/DC (Monte Carlo Dynamic Code). MC/DC is primarily designed to serve as an exploratory Python-based MC transport code. However, it seeks to offer improved performance, massive scalability, and backend portability by leveraging Python code-generation libraries and implementing an innovative abstraction strategy and compilation scheme. Here, we verify MC/DC capabilities and perform an initial performance assessment. We found that MC/DC can run hundreds of times faster than its pure Python mode and about 2.5 times slower, but with comparable parallel scaling, than the high-performance MC code Shift for simple problems. Finally, to further exercise MC/DC's time-dependent MC transport capabilities, we propose a challenge problem based on the C5G7-TD benchmark model., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, M&C 2023 ANS conference

We have shown previously that the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), can detect hundreds of Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) sources simultaneously across a field of view $\sim30^\circ$ in extent. To test if we can use this capability to track heliospheric structures, we undertook a search of 88 hours of MWA IPS data, and identified an observation likely to have a significant Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) in the field of view. We demonstrate that in a single 5-minute MWA observation we are able to localise and image a CME $\sim$33 hours after launch at an elongation of $\sim37^\circ$ from the Sun. We use IPS observables to constrain the kinematics of the CME, and describe how MWA IPS observations can be used in the future to make a unique contribution to heliospheric modelling efforts., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. We present a study of scintillation induced by the mid-latitude ionosphere. By implementing methods currently used in Interplanetary Scintillation studies to measure amplitude scintillation at low frequencies, we have proven it is possible to use the Murchison Widefield Array to study ionospheric scintillation in the weak regime, which is sensitive to structures on scales $\sim$300 m at our observing frequency of 154 MHz, where the phase variance on this scale was 0.06 rad$^{2}$ in the most extreme case observed. Analysing over 1000 individual 2-minute observations, we compared the ionospheric phase variance with that inferred with previous measurements of refractive shifts, which are most sensitive to scales almost an order of magnitude larger. The two measurements were found to be highly correlated (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.71). We observed that for an active ionosphere, the relationship between these two metrics is in line with what would be expected if the ionosphere's structure is described by Kolmogorov turbulence between the relevant scales of 300m and 2000m. In the most extreme ionospheric conditions, the refractive shifts were sometimes found to underestimate the small-scale variance by a factor of four or more, and it is these ionospheric conditions that could have significant effects on radio astronomy observations., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in PASA

We present a low-frequency (170\textendash200\,MHz) search for prompt radio emission associated with the long GRB 210419A using the rapid-response mode of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), triggering observations with the Voltage Capture System (VCS) for the first time. The MWA began observing GRB 210419A within 89\,s of its detection by \textit{Swift}, enabling us to capture any dispersion delayed signal emitted by this GRB for a typical range of redshifts. We conducted a standard single pulse search with a temporal and spectral resolution of $100\,\upmu$s and 10\,kHz over a broad range of dispersion measures from 1 to $5000\,\text{pc}\,\text{cm}^{-3}$, but none were detected. However, fluence upper limits of $77\text{--}224$\,Jy\,ms derived over a pulse width of $0.5\text{--}10$\,ms and a redshift of $0.6

A method to temporally tailor the properties of X-ray radiation carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) is presented. In simulations, an electron beam is prepared with a temporally modulated micro-bunching structure which, when radiating at the second harmonic in a helical undulator, generates OAM light with a corresponding temporally modulated intensity. This method is shown to generate attosecond pulse trains of OAM light without the need for any additional external optics, making the wavelength range tunable. In addition to the OAM pulse train, the method can be adapted to generate radiation where the handedness of the OAM mode may also be temporally modulated (flipped).

While unobscured and radio-quiet active galactic nuclei are regularly being found at redshifts $z > 6$, their obscured and radio-loud counterparts remain elusive. We build upon our successful pilot study, presenting a new sample of low-frequency-selected candidate high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) over a sky area twenty times larger. We have refined our selection technique, in which we select sources with curved radio spectra between 72-231 MHz from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. In combination with the requirements that our GLEAM-selected HzRG candidates have compact radio morphologies and be undetected in near-infrared $K_{\rm s}$-band imaging from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, we find 51 new candidate HzRGs over a sky area of approximately 1200 deg$^2$. Our sample also includes two sources from the pilot study: the second-most distant radio galaxy currently known, at $z=5.55$, with another source potentially at $z \sim 8$. We present our refined selection technique and analyse the properties of the sample. We model the broadband radio spectra between 74 MHz and 9 GHz by supplementing the GLEAM data with both publicly available data and new observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 5.5 and 9 GHz. In addition, deep $K_{\rm s}$-band imaging from the High-Acuity Widefield $K$-band Imager (HAWK-I) on the Very Large Telescope and from the Southern Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey Regions $K_{\rm s}$-band Survey (SHARKS) is presented for five sources. Here we present a low frequency (170-200MHz) search for coherent radio emission associated with nine short GRBs detected by the Swift and/or Fermi satellites using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) rapid-response observing mode. The MWA began observing these events within 30 to 60s of their high-energy detection, enabling us to capture any dispersion delayed signals emitted by short GRBs for a typical range of redshifts. We conducted transient searches at the GRB positions on timescales of 5s, 30s and 2min, resulting in the most constraining flux density limits on any associated transient of 0.42, 0.29, and 0.084Jy, respectively. We also searched for dispersed signals at a temporal and spectral resolution of 0.5s and 1.28MHz but none were detected. However, the fluence limit of 80-100Jy ms derived for GRB 190627A is the most stringent to date for a short GRB. We compared the fluence and persistent emission limits to short GRB coherent emission models, placing constraints on key parameters including the radio emission efficiency of the nearly merged neutron stars ($\lesssim10^{-4}$), the fraction of magnetic energy in the GRB jet ($\lesssim2\times10^{-4}$), and the radio emission efficiency of the magnetar remnant ($\lesssim10^{-3}$). Comparing the limits derived for our full GRB sample to the same emission models, we demonstrate that our 30-min flux density limits were sensitive enough to theoretically detect the persistent radio emission from magnetar remnants up to a redshift of $z\sim0.6$. Our non-detection of this emission could imply that some GRBs in the sample were not genuinely short or did not result from a binary neutron star merger, the GRBs were at high redshifts, these mergers formed atypical magnetars, the radiation beams of the magnetar remnants were pointing away from Earth, or the majority did not form magnetars but rather collapse directly into black holes., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASA

We report the results of our pilot millimeter observations of periodic maser sources. Using SMA, we carried out 1.3\,mm observations of G22.357$+$0.066 and G25.411$+$0.105, while ALMA 1.3 mm archival data was used in the case of G9.62+0.19E. Two continuum cores (MM1 and MM2) were detected in G22.357$+$0.066, while 3 cores (MM1 -- MM3) detected in G25.411$+$0.105. Assuming dust-to-gas ratio of 100, we derived the masses of the detected cores. Using the $^{12}$CO (2-1) and $^{13}$CO (2-1) line emission, we observed gas kinematics tracing the presence of bipolar outflows in all three star-forming regions. In the cases of G22.357$+$0.066 and G9.62+0.19E, both with similar periodic maser light curve profiles, the outflowing gas is seen in the north-west south-east direction. This suggest edge-on view of the 2 sources. G25.411$+$0.105, with a contrasting light curve profile, show a spatially co-located blue and red outflow lobes, suggesting a face-on view. Our results suggest that orientation effects may play a role in determining the characteristics of the light curves of periodic methanol masers., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) is a radio continuum survey at 76-227 MHz of the entire southern sky (Declination $<+30\deg$) with an angular resolution of $\approx 2$ arcmin. In this paper, we combine GLEAM data with optical spectroscopy from the 6dF Galaxy Survey to construct a sample of 1,590 local (median $z \approx 0.064$) radio sources with $S_{200\,\mathrm{MHz}} > 55$ mJy across an area of $\approx 16,700~\mathrm{deg}^{2}$. From the optical spectra, we identify the dominant physical process responsible for the radio emission from each galaxy: 73 per cent are fuelled by an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and 27 per cent by star formation. We present the local radio luminosity function for AGN and star-forming galaxies at 200 MHz and characterise the typical radio spectra of these two populations between 76 MHz and $\sim 1$ GHz. For the AGN, the median spectral index between 200 MHz and $\sim 1$ GHz, $\alpha_{\mathrm{high}}$, is $-0.600 \pm 0.010$ (where $S \propto \nu^{\alpha}$) and the median spectral index within the GLEAM band, $\alpha_{\mathrm{low}}$, is $-0.704 \pm 0.011$. For the star-forming galaxies, the median value of $\alpha_{\mathrm{high}}$ is $-0.650 \pm 0.010$ and the median value of $\alpha_{\mathrm{low}}$ is $-0.596 \pm 0.015$. Among the AGN population, flat-spectrum sources are more common at lower radio luminosity, suggesting the existence of a significant population of weak radio AGN that remain core-dominated even at low frequencies. However, around 4 per cent of local radio AGN have ultra-steep radio spectra at low frequencies ($\alpha_{\mathrm{low}} < -1.2$). We report the results of ongoing monitoring of the 6.7 GHz CH$_3$OH masers associated with G188.95+0.89. In these observations five features are periodically varying and at least two exhibit evidence of velocity drifts. It is not clear the cause of these velocity drifts. The spectra have varied significantly since detection in 1991. The 11.45 km s$^1$ feature has decreased exponentially from 2003. Complementary ALMA 1.3 mm continuum and line observational results are also presented. Eight continuum cores (MM1 - MM8) were detected in G188.95+0.89. We derived the masses of the detected cores. G188.95+0.89 MM2 was resolved into 2 continuum cores (separated by 0.1 arcsec) in ALMA band 7 observations. Also CH$_3$OH (4$_{(2,2)}$-3$_{(1,2)})$ thermal emission associated with MM2 is double peaked. We propose the presence of multiple (at least binary) young stellar objects in MM2. SiO emission exhibit a bow-shock morphology in MM2 while strong emission of $^{12}$CO at the east and west of MM2 suggest the presence of an east-west bipolar outflow., Comment: 6 pages, 11 figures

The favourable properties of tungsten borides for shielding the central High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) core of a spherical tokamak fusion power plant are modelled using the MCNP code. The objectives are to minimize the power deposition into the cooled HTS core, and to keep HTS radiation damage to acceptable levels by limiting the neutron and gamma fluxes. The shield materials compared are W2B, WB, W2B5 and WB4 along with a reactively sintered boride B0.329C0.074Cr0.024Fe0.274W0.299, monolithic W and WC. Of all these W2B5 gave the most favourable results with a factor of ~10 or greater reduction in neutron flux and gamma energy deposition as compared to monolithic W. These results are compared with layered water-cooled shields, giving the result that the monolithic shields, with moderating boron, gave comparable neutron flux and power deposition, and (in the case of W2B5) even better performance. Good performance without water-coolant has advantages from a reactor safety perspective due to the risks associated with radio-activation of oxygen. 10B isotope concentrations between 0 and 100% are considered for the boride shields. The naturally occurring 20% fraction gave much lower energy depositions than the 0% fraction, but the improvement largely saturated beyond 40%. Thermophysical properties of the candidate materials are discussed, in particular the thermal strain. To our knowledge, the performance of W2B5 is unrivalled by other monolithic shielding materials. This is partly as its trigonal crystal structure gives it higher atomic density compared with other borides. It is also suggested that its high performance depends on it having just high enough 10B content to maintain a constant neutron energy spectrum across the shield., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, submitted to Nuclear Fusion

We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu-2)/2$. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $\omega_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{\circ}$C. The ratio $\omega_a / {\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_\mu({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.46\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$, the new experimental average of $a_\mu({\rm Exp}) = 116\,592\,061(41)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.35\,ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations, Comment: 10 pages; 4 figures

We present TransitFit, a package designed to fit exoplanetary transit light-curves. TransitFit offers multi-epoch, multi-wavelength fitting of multi-telescope transit data. TransitFit allows per-telescope detrending to be performed simultaneously with transit parameter fitting, including custom detrending. Host limb darkening can be fitted using prior conditioning from stellar atmosphere models. We demonstrate TransitFit in a number of contexts. We model multi-telescope broadband optical data from the ground-based SPEARNET survey of the low-density hot-Neptune WASP-127b and compare results to a previously published higher spectral resolution GTC/OSIRIS transmission spectrum. Using TransitFit, we fit 26 transit epochs by TESS to recover improved ephemeris of the hot-Jupiter WASP-91b and a transit depth determined to a precision of 111 ppm. We use TransitFit to conduct an investigation into the contested presence of TTV signatures in WASP-126b using 180 transits observed by TESS, concluding that there is no statistically significant evidence for such signatures from observations spanning 27 TESS sectors. We fit HST observations of WASP-43b, demonstrating how TransitFit can use custom detrending algorithms to remove complex baseline systematics. Lastly, we present a transmission spectrum of the atmosphere of WASP-96b constructed from simultaneous fitting of JWST NIRISS Early Release Observations and archive HST WFC3 transit data. The transmission spectrum shows generally good correspondence between spectral features present in both datasets, despite very different detrending requirements., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS. As the Manhattan Project shifted to the theory of implosion assembly in 1944, plutonium was extremely rare and large uncertainties surrounded the function of the Gadget. For these reasons, a team within the Manhattan Project began another ambitious experiment: to confine the effects of detonating two tons of high explosives and enable the recovery of precious plutonium! No data existed on the subject, and the team faced numerous challenges as they engineered what is believed to be the world's first blast-loaded confinement vessel.

Spectral variability of radio sources encodes information about the conditions of intervening media, source structure, and emission processes. With new low-frequency radio interferometers observing over wide fractional bandwidths, studies of spectral variability for a large population of extragalactic radio sources are now possible. Using two epochs of observations from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey that were taken one year apart, we search for spectral variability across 100--230 MHz for 21,558 sources. We present methodologies for detecting variability in the spectrum between epochs and for classifying the type of variability: either as a change in spectral shape or as a uniform change in flux density across the bandwidth. We identify 323 sources with significant spectral variability over a year-long timescale. Of the 323 variable sources, we classify 51 of these as showing a significant change in spectral shape. Variability is more prevalent in peaked-spectrum sources, analogous to gigahertz-peaked spectrum and compact steep-spectrum sources, compared to typical radio galaxies. We discuss the viability of several potential explanations of the observed spectral variability, such as interstellar scintillation and jet evolution. A new method to generate short wavelength Free Electron Laser output with modulated polarisation at attosecond timescales is presented. Simulations demonstrate polarisation switching timescales that are four orders of magnitude faster than the current state of the art and, at X-Ray wavelengths, approaching the atomic unit of time of approximately $24$~attoseconds. Such polarisation control has significant potential in the study of ultra-fast atomic and molecular processes. The output alternates between either orthogonal linear or circularly polarised light without the need for any polarising optical elements. This facilitates operation at the high brightness X-ray wavelengths associated with FELs. As the method uses an afterburner configuration it would be relatively easy to install at exciting FEL facilities, greatly expanding their research capability., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
