Abstract

The aim of the present work is to characterize the influence of cycling thermochemical energy storage material, i.e. CaO/Ca(OH)2, on their fluidizability and heat transfer characteristics in the fluidized bed. Previous experimental investigation in a small fluidized bed thermochemical energy storage reactor resulted in a set of particle size distributions for different numbers of storage cycles. These particle size distributions are remodelled with CaCO3 of different particle sizes based on calculated mixing fractions. Remodelled materials are subsequently experimentally investigated in a fluidization test rig, consisting of a glass column with an inner diameter of 140 mm and a total fluidized bed volume of approx. 3 L. Differential pressure measurement and a horizontally immersed overall perimeter heat flux probe are used to characterize fluidizability and wall-to-bed heat transfer between immersed cylinder and bed material. Particle size distributions are successfully obtained from the mixing process. Sauter mean diameters range from 382 μm to 27 μm. Experimental investigation in the fluidization test rig is expected to show improved heat transfer for increasing storage cycles due to a decrease in particle size. This effect is expected to be increasingly superimposed by poor fluidizability due to large contents of fines, ultimately leading to a performance degradation curve.

Abstract

Atomistic simulations of large biomolecular systems with chemical variability such as constant pH dynamic protonation offer multiple challenges in high performance computing. One of them is the correct treatment of the involved electrostatics in an efficient and highly scalable way. Here we review and assess two of the main building blocks that will permit such simulations: (1) An electrostatics library based on the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) that treats local alternative charge distributions with minimal overhead, and (2) A λ-dynamics module working in tandem with the FMM that enables various types of chemical transitions during the simulation. Our λ-dynamics and FMM implementations do not rely on third-party libraries but are exclusively using C++ language features and they are tailored to the specific requirements of molecular dynamics simulation suites such as GROMACS. The FMM library supports fractional tree depths and allows for rigorous error control and automatic performance optimization at runtime. Near-optimal performance is achieved on various SIMD architectures and on GPUs using CUDA. Abstract

Background: The kidney-brain interaction has been a topic of growing interest. Past studies of the effect of kidney function on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) outcomes have yielded inconsistent findings. Although the second, main phase of the Intensive Blood Pressure Reduction in Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage Trial (INTERACT2) suggests the effectiveness of early intensive blood pressure (BP) lowering in improving functional recovery after ICH, the balance of potential benefits and harms of this treatment in those with decreased kidney function remains uncertain. Study Design: Secondary analysis of INTERACT2, which randomly assigned patients with ICH with elevated systolic BP (SBP) to intensive (target SBP < 140 mm Hg) or contemporaneous guideline-based (target SBP < 180 mm Hg) BP management. Setting & Participants: 2,823 patients from 144 clinical hospitals in 21 countries. Predictors Admission estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs) of patients were categorized into 3 groups based on the CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) creatinine equation: normal or high, mildly decreased, and moderately to severely decreased (>90, 60-90, and <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively). Outcome(s): The effect of admission eGFR on the primary outcome of death or major disability at 90 days (defined as modified Rankin Scale scores of 3-6) was analyzed using a multivariable logistic regression model. Potential effect modification of intensive BP lowering treatment by admission eGFR was assessed by interaction terms. Result(s): Of 2,623 included participants, 912 (35%) and 280 (11%) had mildly and moderately/severely decreased eGFRs, respectively. Patients with moderately/severely decreased eGFRs had the greatest risk for death or major disability at 90 days (adjusted OR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.28-2.61). Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Conflicting data exist of an association between off-hour (weekend, holiday, or night-time) hospital admission and adverse outcome in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We determined the association between off-hour admissions and poor clinical outcome, and of any differential effect of early intensive blood pressure (BP) lowering treatment between off- and on-hour admissions, among participants of the Intensive BP Reduction in Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage Trial (INTERACT2). METHODS: Subsidiary analysis of INTERACT2, a multinational, multicenter, clinical trial of patients with spontaneous ICH with elevated systolic BP, randomly assigned to intensive (target systolic BP <140 mm Hg) or guideline-based (<180 mm Hg) BP management. Primary outcome was death or major disability (modified Rankin scale of 3-6) at 90 days. Off-hour admission was defined as night-time (4:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.) on weekdays, weekends (Saturday and Sunday), and public holidays in each participating country. RESULTS: Of 2,794 patients with information on the primary outcome, 1,770 (63%) were admitted to study centers during off-hours. Off-hour admission was not associated with risk of poor outcome at 90 days (53% off-hour vs. 55% on-hour; p = 0.49), even after adjustment for comorbid risk factors (odds ratio 0.92; 95% CI 0.76-1.12). Consistency exists in the effects of intensive BP lowering between off- and on-hour admission (p = 0.85 for homogeneity). CONCLUSIONS: Off-hour admission was not associated with increased risks of death or major disability among trial protocol participants with acute ICH. Intensive BP lowering can provide similar treatment effect irrespective of admission hours.

Abstract

The Ninth International Symposium on Logical Formalizations of Commonsense Reasoning will be held at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, at the University of Toronto, on June 1–3, 2009. Since its inception in 1991, the Commonsense Reasoning Symposium series has provided a forum for exploring one of the long-term goals of Artificial Intelligence, endowing computers with common sense. Although we know how to build programs that excel at certain bounded or mechanical tasks which humans find difficult, such as playing chess, we still have very little idea how to program computers to do well at commonsense tasks which are easy for humans. One approach to this problem is to formalize commonsense reasoning using formal languages such as mathematical logic. The focus of the symposium is on representation rather than on algorithms, and on formal rather than informal methods. Twenty-two technical papers, on a variety of topics in commonsense reasoning, including physical reasoning, planning, theories of action, belief revision, and nonmonotonic reasoning, are included in these proceedings and will be presented at the symposium. Each paper was reviewed by at least two members of the program committee. The program also features invited talks by three leading researchers: • Anthony G. Cohn (University of Leeds, UK), “Acquiring Commonsense Knowledge from Perceptual Observation”; • Ernest Davis (New York University, USA), “Commonsense Reasoning about Chemistry Experiments: Ontology and Representation”; and • Sheila McIlraith (University of Toronto, Canada), “Diagnosis Revisited.” We are pleased to recognize two student papers with the Commonsense-2009 Outstanding Student Paper Award. Eligible papers had to be authored or co-authored by a student at the time of submission, and could not be co-authored by any of the Symposium Chairs. The two Outstanding Student Papers are: • Shakhil Khan and Yves Lesperance: “A Logical Account of Prioritized Goals and Their Dynamics” • Hannes Strass and Michael Thielscher: “Defaults in Action: Nonmonotonic Reasoning about States in Action Calculi” We are very pleased that the symposium will be held in Toronto this year, where Ray Reiter (1939–2002), a world leader in cognitive robotics and formal commonsense reasoning, spent many years of his life and scientific career. It is with great gratitude for Ray’s lasting contributions to our field that we dedicate this symposium to his memory. Organizing such an event always rests on many shoulders. We are especially grateful to Hojjat Ghaderi, our Local Arrangements Chair, as well as the other members of his team from the University of Toronto: Luna Keshwah, Hector Levesque, and Sheila McIlraith. Abstract

Grazing of dairy cows is mandatory in organic farming. However, as in conventional farming there is a tendency to increase milk yield per cows by employing other feeding strategies than grazing. On-farm research was initiated on organic dairy farms in Lower Saxony to investigate the current practice of grassland utilization and dairy husbandry and to explore the potential of grazing for milk production. The results show that with an increased focus on grazing of dairy cows there is considerable room for more milk being produced from grazed grass. An in-depth analysis of the spatio-temporal pattern of the quality of the herbage on offer revealed steadily high net energy and protein concentrations almost irrespective of the sward botanical composition and the season of sampling. Research is needed to improve grazing management strategies in organic farming to make better use of the high potential of grazed grasslands and thereby increase the sustainability of milk production.

Abstract

Background: Individuals with 1st degree relatives harboring an intracranial aneurysm (IA) are at an increased risk of IA, suggesting genetic variation is an important risk factor. Methods: Families with multiple members having ruptured or unruptured IA were recruited and all available medical records and imaging data were reviewed to classify possible IA subjects as definite, probable or possible IA or not a case. A 6 K SNP genome screen was performed in 333 families, representing the largest linkage study of IA reported to date. A 'narrow' (n = 705 definite IA cases) and 'broad' (n = 866 definite or probable IA) disease definition were used in multipoint model-free linkage analysis and parametric linkage analysis, maximizing disease parameters. Ordered subset analysis (OSA) was used to detect gene × smoking interaction. Results: Model-free linkage analyses detected modest evidence of possible linkage (all LOD < 1.5). Parametric analyses yielded an unadjusted LOD score of 2.6 on chromosome 4q (162 cM) and 3.1 on chromosome 12p (50 cM). Significant evidence for a gene × smoking interaction was detected using both disease models on chromosome 7p (60 cM; p ≤ 0.01). Our study provides modest evidence of possible linkage to several chromosomes. Conclusion: These data suggest it is unlikely that there is a single common variant with a strong effect in the majority of the IA families. Rather, it is likely that multiple genetic and environmental risk factors contribute to the susceptibility for intracranial aneurysms.
