4. Atherosclerotic Plaque Characterization by 0.5-mm-Slice Multislice Computed Tomographic Imaging

Abstract

Background It has been proposed that 0.5-mm-slice multislice computed tomography (MSCT) is a noninvasive tool for the detection of atherosclerotic plaque, but the validity of such an assessinent has not been demonstrated by an invasive investigation. The present study was performed to compare the 0.5-mm-slice NISCT density of plaques with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) findings. Methods and Results Atherosclerotic plaques were characterized in 37 consecutive patients undergoing percutaneous interventions. Based on the IVUS echogenecity, the plaques were classified as soft (n= 18), fibrous (n= 40) or calcified (n=40). In these 98 plaques, 0.5-mm-slice MSCT plaque density was calculated in 443 regions-of-interest, including 331 lesional foci and 112 luminal cross-sections, and represented as Hounsfield units (HU). MSCT density of the 3 types of plaque was 11 +/- 12 HU, 78 +/- 21 HU, and 516 +/- 198 HU respectively. Computed tomography density of the (contrast-filled) lumen was 258 +/- 43HU. There were statistically highly significant differences in the densitometric characteristics among the 4 groups (soft, fibrous, calcified plaque and lumen) by nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.0001). Conclusions The IVUS-based coronary plaque configuration can be accurately identified by 0.5-mm slice MSCT. Noninvasive assessment of plaque characterization will ensure emphasis on the vessel wall beyond the vascular lumen.

Abstract

研究論文, Articles, The aim of this study is to verify quantitatively how speech levels are used according to power and closeness towards listener, and index social distance and psychological distance. We analyzed refusal data collected by oral discourse completion test from 62 Japanese language native speakers, employing two main speech levels and their respective sub-speech levels for analysis. Results showed social distance is primarily indicated by use of (Sub-) formal or (Sub-) informal levels, whereas psychological distance is mainly expressed by language items categorized by sub-levels. Traditionally, social and psychological distance have been discussed together, but by employing sub-speech levels, their respective indicators can be distinguished.

15. Optical and microphysical properties of upper clouds measured with the Raman lidar and hydrometeor videosonde: a case study on 29 March 2004 over Tsukuba, Japan

Abstract

Optical and microphysical properties of the upper clouds at an altitude range of 5-11 km were measured over Tsukuba, Japan, on 29-30 March 2004 using a ground-based Raman lidar and a balloon-borne hydrometeor videosonde (HYVIS). The Raman lidar measured the vertical distributions of the particle extinction coefficient, backscattering coefficients, depolarization ratio, and extinction-to-backscatter ratio (lidar ratio) at 532 nm; further, it measured the water vapor mixing ratio. The HYVIS measured the vertical distributions of the particle size, shape, cross-sectional area, and number concentration of the cloud particles by taking microscopic images. The HYVIS measurement showed that the cloud particles were ice crystals whose shapes were columnar, bulletlike, platelike, and irregular, and 7-400 [micro]m in size. The Raman lidar measurement showed that the depolarization ratio ranged from 0% to 35% and the lidar ranged from 0.3 to 30 sr for the clouds in ice-saturated air. The comparison between the measured data and theoretical calculations of the cloud optical properties suggests that the observed variations in the depolarization ratio and lidar ratio were primarily due to the variation in the proportion of the horizontally oriented ice crystals in the clouds. The optical thickness of the cloud obtained from the lidar was about 2 times lower than that calculated from the HYVIS data, and the maximum extinction coefficient was about 5 times lower than the HYVIS data. The most probable reason for the differences is the horizontal inhomogeneities of the cloud properties between the measurements sites for the two instruments.

20. Development of speech level base and speech level shift : A comparison between intermediate learners and advanced learners of Japanese

Abstract

研究論文, Articles, The aim of this study is to identify the developmental process of speech level base and speech level shift by comparing ten advanced and ten intermediate adult learners of Japanese. We used closed role-play to elucidate request, invitation and apology, and analyzed each utterance within the six speech levels. Data analysis revealed that the development of speech level base evolves through the following stages: 1) only polite speech level base can be used, 2) plain speech level base appears, however, polite speech level base is dominant, 3) both polite and plain speech level bases can be used, however, not precisely controlled, 4) there are no gaps between speaker's perception and usage of speech level base. Developmental steps of speech level shift can be illustrated as follows: 1) no shift, 2) haphazard up-shift, 3) haphazard up-/down- shift, 4) delay in re-turning to the speech level base after a speech shift, 5) accomplishment of pragmatically appropriate speech level shift. Until now little attention has been paid to the developmental process of speech level. The result of this study, however, sheds light on how learners of Japanese acquire speech level base and speech level shift.
