Abstract

The MEG II experiment searches for a charged-lepton-flavour-violating $\mu \to e \gamma$ with the target sensitivity of $6 \times 10^{-14}$. A liquid xenon calorimeter with VUV-sensitive photosensors measures photon position, timing, and energy. This paper concentrates on the precise photon energy reconstruction with the MEG II liquid xenon calorimeter. Since a muon beam rate is $3\text{-}5 \times 10^{7}~\text{s}^{-1}$, multi-photon elimination analysis is performed using waveform analysis techniques such as a template waveform fit. As a result, background events in the energy range of 48-58 MeV were reduced by 34 %. The calibration of an energy scale of the calorimeter with several calibration sources is also discussed to achieve a high resolution of 1.8 %., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

The MEG II experiment, based at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland, reports the result of a search for the decay $\mu^+\to e^+\gamma$ from data taken in the first physics run in 2021. No excess of events over the expected background is observed, yielding an upper limit on the branching ratio of B($\mu^+\to e^+\gamma$) < $7.5 \times 10^{-13}$ (90% C.L.). The combination of this result and the limit obtained by MEG gives B($\mu^+\to e^+\gamma$) < $3.1 \times 10^{-13}$ (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date. A ten-fold larger sample of data is being collected during the years 2022-2023, and data-taking will continue in the coming years., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. To be published in EPJC

Abstract

The MEG II experiment, located at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Switzerland, is the successor to the MEG experiment, which completed data taking in 2013. MEG II started fully operational data taking in 2021, with the goal of improving the sensitivity of the mu+ -> e+ gamma decay down to 6e-14 almost an order of magnitude better than the current limit. Abstract

In the MEG II experiment, the liquid xenon gamma-ray detector uses Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPC) which are sensitive to vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light under a high-intensity muon beam environment. In the commissioning phase of the detector with the beam, a significant degradation in the photon detection efficiency (PDE) for VUV light was found, while the degradation in the PDE for visible light was much less significant. This implies that the radiation damage is localized to the surface of the MPPC where incoming VUV photons create electron-hole pairs. It was also found that the PDE can recover to the original level by thermal annealing., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Abstract

The MEG experiment took data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in the years 2009--2013 to test the violation of the lepton flavour conservation law, which originates from an accidental symmetry that the Standard Model of elementary particle physics has, and published the most stringent limit on the charged lepton flavour violating decay ${\mu}^+ \rightarrow {\rm e}^+ \gamma$: BR(${\mu}^+ \rightarrow {\rm e}^+ \gamma$) $<4.2 \times 10^{-13}$ at 90% confidence level. The MEG detector has been upgraded in order to reach a sensitivity of $6\times10^{-14}$. The basic principle of MEG II is to achieve the highest possible sensitivity using the full muon beam intensity at the Paul Scherrer Institute ($7\times10^{7}$ muons/s) with an upgraded detector. The main improvements are better rate capability of all sub-detectors and improved resolutions while keeping the same detector concept. Abstract

We present the first direct search for lepton flavour violating muon decay mediated by a new light particle X, $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{X}, \mathrm{X} \to \gamma\gamma$. This search uses a dataset resulting from $7.5\times 10^{14}$ stopped muons collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009--2013. No significant excess is found in the mass region 20--45 MeV/c$^2$ for lifetimes below 40 ps, and we set the most stringent branching ratio upper limits in the mass region of 20--40 MeV/c$^2$, down to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-11})$ at 90\% confidence level.

The MEG experiment, designed to search for the mu+->e+ gamma decay at a 10^-13 sensitivity level, completed data taking in 2013. Abstract

Transitions of charged leptons from one generation to another are basically prohibited in the Standard Model because of the mysteriously tiny neutrino masses, although such flavor-violating transitions have been long observed for quarks and neutrinos. Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories (SUSY GUT), which unify quarks and leptons as well as their forces, predict that charged leptons should also make such transitions at small but experimentally observable rates. The MEG experiment was the first to have explored one of such transitions, mu+ -> e+ gamma decays, down to the branching ratios predicted by SUSY GUT. Here we report the final results of the MEG experiment based on the full dataset collected from 2009 to 2013 at the Paul Scherrer Institut, corresponding to a total of 7.5 x 10^14 stopped muons on target. No excess for mu+ -> e+ gamma decays was found. Thus the most stringent upper bound was placed on the branching ratio, B(mu+ -> e+ gamma) < 4.2 x 10^-13 at 90% C.L., about 30 times tighter than previous experiments, and severely constrains SUSY GUT and other well-motivated theories. We are now preparing the upgraded experiment MEG II with an aim to achieve a sensitivity of 4 x 10^-14 after three years of data taking. Abstract

We studied the radiative muon decay $\mu^+ \to e^+\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma$ by using for the first time an almost fully polarized muon source. We identified a large sample (~13000) of these decays in a total sample of 1.8x10^14 positive muon decays collected in the MEG experiment in the years 2009--2010 and measured the branching ratio B($\mu^+ \to e^+\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma$) = (6.03+-0.14(stat.)+-0.53(sys.))x10^-8 for E_e > 45 MeV and E_{\gamma} > 40 MeV, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. The precise measurement of this decay mode provides a basic tool for the timing calibration, a normalization channel, and a strong quality check of the complete MEG experiment in the search for $\mu^+ \to e^+\gamma$ process., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

Here I review the status and prospects of experimental investigations into lepton flavor violation (LFV) in charged leptons. Rare LFV processes are naturally expected to occur through loops of TeV scale particles predicted by supersymmetric theories or other models beyond the Standard Model. In contrast to physics of quark flavors that is dominated by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, LFV in charged leptons is a definitive signal of new physics. Currently active researches are rare tau decay searches at the B factories. The MEG experiment will soon start a sensitive search for the LFV muon decay, mu to e gamma. Abstract

The International Large Detector, ILD, is a detector concept which has been developed for the electron-positron collider ILC. The detector has been optimized for precision physics in a range of energies between 90 GeV and 1 TeV. ILD features a high precision, large volume combined silicon and gaseous tracking system, together with a high granularity calorimeter, all inside a 3.5 T solenoidal magnetic field. The paradigm of particle flow has been the guiding principle of the design of ILD. In this document the required performance of the detector, the proposed implementation and the readiness of the different technologies needed for the implementation are discussed. This is done in the framework of the ILC collider proposal, now under consideration in Japan, and includes site specific aspects needed to build and operate the detector at the proposed ILC site in Japan.

Abstract

The effect of confinement on the phase changes and dynamics of acetonitrile in mesoporous MCM-41 was examined by the use of absorption, FT-IR, DSC, and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements. The measurements indicated that the condensed phase is very similar to the bulk liquid and the phase changes between alpha-type and beta-type acetonitriles were observed below the melting points.

Abstract

A study of ZSM-5, aluminosilicate, and SiO2 that were modified by silver ion is presented in order to reveal the properties of Ag(super +) and also to clarify the specificity of the electronic state of Cu(super +) in copper-ion exchanged ZSM-5 (CuZSM-5). The IR spectroscopy is applied in combination with adsorption microcalorimetry in order to reveal the bonding nature of the silver ion supported on solid materials by utilizing CO as a probe molecule.

The dynamics of water molecules monolayered on SrF2 and ZnO surfaces was investigated by quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements. The low mobility of the monolayer water molecules around room temperature is ascribed to a decrease in activation entropy caused by limited paths for molecular motion of the monolayer water on impermeable crystal surface.

Abstract

We are developing a new type of photon detector for an experiment to search for muons decaying into a positron and gamma ray. Our sensitivity on the branching ratio is expected to reach [10.sup.-14] by use of the world's most intensive continuous muon beam at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). In this experiment, the photon detector will utilize liquid Xenon (Xe) as a scintillation material because of its fast response, large light yield, and high density. The scintillation light emitted in liquid Xe will be directly observed by photomultipliers (PMTs) located in the liquid without the use of a transmission window. In order to study the detector response to gamma rays, we have constructed a prototype with an active volume of 2.3 x [10.sup.3] [cm.sup.3] surrounded by 32 PMTs. The PMT is a new development enabling operation at temperatures as low as liquid Xe (165 K). Energy, position, and timing resolutions have been evaluated using gamma-ray sources ranging from 320 kev to 1835 keV. The performance of the prototype is presented in this article. Abstract

Quasi-elastic neutron scattering was used to investigate the dynamics of water molecules confined in MCM-41. The measurement was performed for three water-filled MCM-41 samples with different pore sizes in the temperature range 200-300 K. A model that was used in a study for bulky water was employed for the analysis of the spectra. The results showed that the translational diffusion of the confined water molecules demonstrated the Arrhenius type of temperature dependence, which was in contrast to a non-Arrhenius behavior for bulk water.

Abstract

The MEG experiment, designed to search for the $${\mu ^+ \rightarrow \hbox {e}^+ \gamma }$$ μ+→e+γ decay, completed data-taking in 2013 reaching a sensitivity level of $${5.3\times 10^{-13}}$$ 5.3×10-13 for the branching ratio. In order to increase the sensitivity reach of the experiment by an order of magnitude to the level of $$6\times 10^{-14}$$ 6×10-14 , a total upgrade, involving substantial changes to the experiment, has been undertaken, known as MEG II. We present both the motivation for the upgrade and a detailed overview of the design of the experiment and of the expected detector performance.

Abstract

The MEG experiment makes use of one of the world's most intense low energy muon beams, in order to search for the lepton flavour violating process $\mu^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e}^{+} \gamma$. We determined the residual beam polarization at the thin stopping target, by measuring the asymmetry of the angular distribution of Michel decay positrons as a function of energy. The initial muon beam polarization at the production is predicted to be $P_{\mu} = -1$ by the Standard Model (SM) with massless neutrinos. We estimated our residual muon polarization to be $P_{\mu} = -0.85 \pm 0.03 ~ {\rm (stat)} ~ { }^{+ 0.04}_{-0.05} ~ {\rm (syst)}$ at the stopping target, which is consistent with the SM predictions when the depolarizing effects occurring during the muon production, propagation and moderation in the target are taken into account. The knowledge of beam polarization is of fundamental importance in order to model the background of our ${\megsign}$ search induced by the muon radiative decay: $\mu^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e}^{+} \bar{\nu}_{\mu} \nu_{\rm e} \gamma$.

Abstract

The final results of the search for the lepton flavour violating decay μ+→e+γ based on the full dataset collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009–2013 and totalling 7.5×1014 stopped muons on target are presented. No significant excess of events is observed in the dataset with respect to the expected background and a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of B(μ+→e+γ)

Abstract

A telecommunication equipment and information technical equipment usually produce unintentional electromagnetic fields. Information from a video display unit could be reconstructed by intercepting such emissions at a distance. The testing methods and countermeasure methods have been discussed and those standardizations have been published at ITU-T SG5 WP2, and ITU-T K.115: Mitigation methods against electromagnetic security threats has also published in Oct. 2015. In this paper, a risk evaluation method of countermeasure technique for preventing electromagnetic information leakage is studied.

Abstract

The International Large Detector (ILD) is a concept for a detector at the International Linear Collider, ILC. The ILC will collide electrons and positrons at energies of initially 500 GeV, upgradeable to 1 TeV. The ILC has an ambitious physics program, which will extend and complement that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A hallmark of physics at the ILC is precision. The clean initial state and the comparatively benign environment of a lepton collider are ideally suited to high precision measurements. To take full advantage of the physics potential of ILC places great demands on the detector performance. The design of ILD is driven by these requirements. Excellent calorimetry and tracking are combined to obtain the best possible overall event reconstruction, including the capability to reconstruct individual particles within jets for particle ow calorimetry. This requires excellent spatial resolution for all detector systems. A highly granular calorimeter system is combined with a central tracker which stresses redundancy and efficiency. In addition, efficient reconstruction of secondary vertices and excellent momentum resolution for charged particles are essential for an ILC detector. The interaction region of the ILC is designed to host two detectors, which can be moved into the beam position with a push-pull scheme. The mechanical design of ILD and the overall integration of subdetectors takes these operational condition s into account.
