1. What Encourages Care Workers to Continue Working in Intellectual Disability Services in England? Interview Findings

Abstract

The article reports research aimed at identifying factors relating to retention in English intellectual disability services, drawing on a study of the social care workforce. The research involved two rounds of interviews with social care managers and staff between 2009 and 2014. The study uses social exchange theory, particularly the idea of 'reciprocity' and the mechanism of 'hope', as a conceptual framework to aid interpretation of the themes relating to retention identified in the interview analysis: 'pay', 'support', 'morale', and 'training' (related to reciprocity) and 'improving quality of life' and 'supporting personal development' (related to hope). Both groups of themes are identified as being particularly appropriate to intellectual disability services. The study concludes that reciprocity and hope seem to interact in factors related to staff retention, although the study suggests that reciprocity rather than hope is directly connected with retention.

Abstract

This article reports on a study of local online information for carers in England. It sets this in the context of the Care Act 2014 which gave local authorities (LAs) specific responsibility for providing information to carers. The study selected four varied case study LAs and explored the content of their websites to see what carers might find available and accessible. We found the LA websites differed, with some LAs making use of local voluntary sector groups to be the main information resource. Mentions of NHS services for carers appeared often less comprehensive and there was scant mention of private social care providers as being sources of advice and information. The article suggests that social workers should be careful of referring carers to LA websites without checking that they are sufficiently meaningful to the carer and accessible to the individual. 27. Promoting the Mental Well-Being of Older People from Black and Minority Ethnic Communities in United Kingdom Rural Areas: Findings from an Interview Study

Abstract

Drawing from 81 interviews with practitioners in social care and housing with care services in the United Kingdom, this paper explores practice issues in rural areas when supporting the mental health and well-being of older people from Black and minority ethnic groups. The paper begins with a review of the literature which provides evidence that BME older people are likely to be increasingly part of the populations of rural areas. Next it presents interview data revealing that while practitioners are aware of such demographic changes in general terms; some feel that they lack training and skills in adapting their professional practice to support all older people. Others express feelings of professional isolation in seeking to support older people from minority groups and are concerned that older people from minority groups may be at risk of isolation and loneliness. The paper concludes with a discussion of the study's implications for rural practice, policy and research.
