Search

Crystal symmetries can enforce all bands of a material to be topological, a property that is commonly referred to as ``supertopology". Here, we determine the symmetry-enforced $\mathbb{Z}_2$ supertopologies of non-magnetic centrosymmetric materials with weak and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). For weak (i.e., negligible) SOC, crystal symmetries can enforce Dirac nodal lines protected by a $\pi$-Berry phase, while for strong SOC, crystal symmetries can give rise to nontrival weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologies in 2D subplanes of the 3D Brillouin zone. We catalogue all centrosymmetric space groups whose symmetries enforce these $\mathbb{Z}_2$ supertopologies. Skyrmion lattices (SkL) in centrosymmetric materials typically have a magnetic period on the nanometer-scale, so that the coupling between magnetic superstructures and the underlying crystal lattice cannot be neglected. Here, we reveal the commensurate locking of a SkL to the atomic lattice in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$ via high-resolution resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). Weak easy-plane magnetic anisotropy, demonstrated here by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and REXS, penalizes placing a skyrmion core on a site of the atomic lattice. Under these conditions, a commensurate SkL, locked to the crystal lattice, is stable at finite temperatures -- but gives way to a competing incommensurate ground state upon cooling. We discuss the role of Umklapp-terms in the Hamiltonian for the formation of this lattice-locked state, its magnetic space group, the role of slight discommensurations, or (line) defects in the magnetic texture, and contrast our findings with the case of SkLs in noncentrosymmetric material platforms., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, additional SI included (19 pages, 11 figures, 1 table)

Two common difficulties in the design of topological quantum materials are that the desired features lie too far from the Fermi level and are spread over a too large energy range. Doping-induced states at the Fermi level provide a solution, where non-trivial topological properties are enforced by the doping-reduced symmetry. To show this, we consider a regular placement of dopants in a lattice of space group (SG) 176 (P6$\text{}_3$/m), which reduces the symmetry to SG 143 (P3). Our two- and four-band models feature symmetry-enforced double Weyl points at $\Gamma$ and A with Chern bands for $k_z\neq 0,\pi$, Van Hove singularities, nontrivial multiband quantum geometry due to mixed orbital character, and a singular flat band. The excellent agreement with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations on copper-doped lead apatite ('LK-99') provides evidence that minimal topological bands at the Fermi level can be realized in doped materials., Comment: Shortened for peer-review, phase convention adjusted, recent literature added

Magnetic materials with highly anisotropic chemical bonding can be exfoliated to realize ultrathin sheets or interfaces with highly controllable optical or spintronics responses, while also promising novel cross-correlation phenomena between electric polarization and the magnetic texture. The vast majority of these van-der-Waals magnets are collinear ferro-, ferri-, or antiferromagnets, with a particular scarcity of lattice-incommensurate helimagnets of defined left- or right-handed rotation sense, or helicity. Here we use polarized neutron scattering to reveal cycloidal, or conical, magnetic structures in DyTe$_3$, with coupled commensurate and incommensurate order parameters, where covalently bonded double-slabs of dysprosium square nets are separated by highly metallic tellurium layers. Based on this ground state and its evolution in a magnetic field as probed by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we establish a one-dimensional spin model with off-diagonal on-site terms, spatially modulated by the unconventional charge order in DyTe$_3$. The CDW-driven term couples to antiferromagnetism, or to the net magnetization in applied magnetic field, and creates a complex magnetic phase diagram indicative of competing interactions in an easily cleavable helimagnet. SmB6 is a mixed-valence compound with flat f-electron bands that have a propensity to magnetism. Since the paramagnetic phase of SmB6 has a nontrivial Z2 topology, one may expect interesting band topologies for the magnetic phases too. Here we show that as the Sm valence increases with pressure, SmB6 undergoes a first-order phase transition into a metallic antiferromagnetic state, whose symmetry depends on the model parameters. The magnetic orderings give rise to distinct band topologies: while the A-type order leads to an overlap between valence and conduction bands in the form of Dirac nodal lines, the G-type order has a negative indirect gap with weak Z2 indices. We also investigate the spin polarized phase, which can be realized in a strong magnetic field, and find that it exhibits Weyl points as well as nodal lines close to the Fermi level. We derive two fundamental laws of chiral band crossings: (i) a local constraint relating the Chern number to phase jumps of rotation eigenvalues; and (ii) a global constraint determining the number of chiral crossings on rotation axes. Together with the fermion doubling theorem, these laws describe all conditions that a network of chiral band crossing must satisfy. We apply the fundamental laws to prove the existence of enforced double Weyl points, nodal planes, and generic Weyl points, among others. In addition, we show that chiral space-group symmetries cannot stabilize nodal lines with finite Chern numbers. Combining the local constraint with explicit low-energy models, we determine the generic topological phase diagrams of all multi-fold crossings. Remarkably, we find a four-fold crossing with Chern number 5, which exceeds the previously conceived maximum Chern number of 4. We identify BaAsPt as a suitable material with this four-fold crossing exhibiting Chern number 5 near the Fermi energy., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures

Diffuse gamma-ray line emission traces freshly produced radioisotopes in the interstellar gas, providing a unique perspective on the entire Galactic cycle of matter from nucleosynthesis in massive stars to their ejection and mixing in the interstellar medium. We aim at constructing a model of nucleosynthesis ejecta on galactic scale which is specifically tailored to complement the physically most important and empirically accessible features of gamma-ray measurements in the MeV range, in particular for decay gamma-rays such as $^{26}$Al, $^{60}$Fe or $^{44}$Ti. Based on properties of massive star groups, we developed a Population Synthesis Code which can instantiate galaxy models quickly and based on many different parameter configurations, such as the star formation rate, density profiles, or stellar evolution models. As a result, we obtain model maps of nucleosynthesis ejecta in the Galaxy which incorporate the population synthesis calculations of individual massive star groups. Based on a variety of stellar evolution models, supernova explodabilities, and density distributions, we find that the measured $^{26}$Al distribution from INTEGRAL/SPI can be explained by a Galaxy-wide population synthesis model with a star formation rate of $4$-$8\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}}$ and a spiral-arm dominated density profile with a scale height of at least 700 pc. Our model requires that most massive stars indeed undergo a supernova explosion. This corresponds to a supernova rate in the Milky Way of $1.8$-$2.8$ per century, with quasi-persistent $^{26}$Al and $^{60}$Fe masses of $1.2$-$2.4\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and $1$-$6\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, respectively. Comparing the simulated morphologies to SPI data suggests that a frequent merging of superbubbles may take place in the Galaxy, and that an unknown but strong foreground emission at 1.8 MeV could be present., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 2 page appendix, accepted for publication in A&A

The presence of radioactive $^{26}$Al at 1.8 MeV reflects ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way. Diffuse emission from its decay can be measured with gamma-ray telescopes in space. The intensity, line shape, and spatial distribution of the $^{26}$Al emission allow a study of these nucleosynthesis sources. The line parameters trace massive-star feedback in the interstellar medium due to its 1~My lifetime. We aim to deepen previous studies of the $^{26}$Al emission in the Milky Way, using all gamma-ray data including single and double events as collected with SPI on INTEGRAL from 2003 until 2020. We apply improved spectral response and background as evaluated from tracing spectral details over the entire mission. The exposure for Galactic $^{26}$Al emission is enhanced using all event types measured within SPI. We re-determine the intensity of Galactic $^{26}$Al emission across the entire sky, through maximum likelihood fits of simulated and model-built sky distributions to SPI spectra for single and for double detector hits. We find an all-sky flux of (1.84$\pm$0.03$)\times$10$^{-3}$~ph~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ in the 1.809~MeV line from $^{26}$Al, determined as fitted to sky distributions from previous observations with COMPTEL. Significant emission from higher latitudes indicate an origin from nearby massive-star groups and superbubbles, also supported by a bottom-up population synthesis model. The line centroid is found at (1809.83$\pm$0.04~keV, and line broadening from source kinematics integrated over the sky is (0.62$\pm0.3$)~keV (FWHM)., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures. The band topology of magnetic semimetals is of interest both from the fundamental science point of view and with respect to potential spintronics and memory applications. Unfortunately, only a handful of suitable topological semimetals with magnetic order have been discovered so far. One such family that hosts these characteristics is the antiperovskites, A$_3$BO, a family of 3D Dirac semimetals. The A=Eu$^{2+}$ compounds magnetically order with multiple phases as a function of applied magnetic field. Here, by combining band structure calculations with neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements, we establish the antiperovskite Eu$_3$PbO as a new topological magnetic semimetal. This topological material exhibits a multitude of different topological phases with ordered Eu moments which can be easily controlled by an external magnetic field. The topological phase diagram of Eu$_3$PbO includes an antiferromagnetic Dirac phase, as well as ferro- and ferrimagnetic phases with both Weyl points and nodal lines. For each of these phases, we determine the bulk band dispersions, the surface states, and the topological invariants by means of $\textit{ab-initio}$ and tight-binding calculations. Our discovery of these topological phases introduces Eu$_3$PbO as a new platform to study and manipulate the interplay of band topology, magnetism, and transport.

The cosmic evolution of the chemical elements from the Big Bang to the present time is driven by nuclear fusion reactions inside stars and stellar explosions. A cycle of matter recurrently re-processes metal-enriched stellar ejecta into the next generation of stars. The study of cosmic nucleosynthesis and of this matter cycle requires the understanding of the physics of nuclear reactions, of the conditions at which the nuclear reactions are activated inside the stars and stellar explosions, of the stellar ejection mechanisms through winds and explosions, and of the transport of the ejecta towards the next cycle, from hot plasma to cold, star-forming gas. Due to the long timescales of stellar evolution, and because of the infrequent occurrence of stellar explosions, observational studies are challenging. Due to their radioactive lifetime of million years, the 26Al and 60Fe isotopes are suitable to characterise simultaneously the processes of nuclear fusion reactions and of interstellar transport. We describe and discuss the nuclear reactions involved in the production and destruction of 26Al and 60Fe, the key characteristics of the stellar sites of their nucleosynthesis and their interstellar journey after ejection from the nucleosynthesis sites. We connect the theoretical astrophysical aspects to the variety of astronomical messengers, from stardust and cosmic-ray composition measurements, through observation of gamma rays produced by radioactivity, to material deposited in deep-sea ocean crusts and to the inferred composition of the first solids that have formed in the Solar System. We show that considering measurements of the isotopic ratio of 26Al to 60Fe eliminate some of the unknowns when interpreting astronomical results, and discuss the lessons learned from these two isotopes on cosmic chemical evolution., Comment: 51 pages, 44 figures; review from an ISSI workshop series; accepted for publication in PASA

We identify all symmetry-enforced band crossings in nonmagnetic orthorhombic crystals with and without spin-orbit coupling and discuss their topological properties. We find that orthorhombic crystals can host a large number of different band degeneracies, including movable Weyl and Dirac points with hourglass dispersions, fourfold double Weyl points, Weyl and Dirac nodal lines, almost movable nodal lines, nodal chains, and topological nodal planes. Interestingly, spin-orbit coupled materials in the space groups 18, 36, 44, 45, and 46 can have band pairs with only two Weyl points in the entire Brillouin zone. This results in a simpler connectivity of the Fermi arcs and more pronounced topological responses than in materials with four or more Weyl points. In addition, we show that the symmetries of the space groups 56, 61, and 62 enforce nontrivial weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topology in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling, leading to helical surface states. With these classification results in hand, we perform extensive database searches for orthorhombic materials crystallizing in the relevant space groups. We find that Sr$_2$Bi$_3$ and Ir$_2$Si have bands crossing the Fermi energy with a symmetry-enforced nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant, CuIrB possesses nodal chains near the Fermi energy, Pd$_7$Se$_4$ and Ag$_2$Se exhibit fourfold double Weyl points, the latter one even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, whereas the fourfold degeneracies in AuTlSb are made up from intersecting nodal lines. We report the identification of symmetry-enforced nodal planes (NPs) in CoSi providing the missing topological charges in an entire network of band-crossings comprising in addition multifold degeneracies and Weyl points, such that the fermion doubling theorem is satisfied. In our study we have combined measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in CoSi with material-specific calculations of the electronic structure and Berry curvature, as well as a general analysis of the band topology of space group (SG) 198. The observation of two nearly dispersionless SdH frequency branches provides unambiguous evidence of four Fermi surface sheets at the R point that reflect the symmetry-enforced orthogonality of the underlying wave functions at the intersections with the NPs. Hence, irrespective of the spin-orbit coupling strength, SG198 features always six- and fourfold degenerate crossings at R and $\Gamma$ that are intimately connected to the topological charges distributed across the network.

Following over a decade of intense efforts to enable major progress in spintronics devices and quantum information technology by means of materials in which the electronic structure exhibits non-trivial topological properties, three key challenges are still unresolved. First, the identification of topological band degeneracies that are generically rather than accidentally located at the Fermi level. Second, the ability to easily control such topological degeneracies. And third, to identify generic topological degeneracies in large, multi-sheeted Fermi surfaces. Combining de Haas - van Alphen spectroscopy with density functional theory and band-topology calculations, we report here that the non-symmorphic symmetries in ferromagnetic MnSi generate nodal planes (NPs), which enforce topological protectorates (TPs) with substantial Berry curvatures at the intersection of the NPs with the Fermi surface (FS) regardless of the complexity of the FS. We predict that these TPs will be accompanied by sizeable Fermi arcs subject to the direction of the magnetization. Deriving the symmetry conditions underlying topological NPs, we show that the 1651 magnetic space groups comprise 7 grey groups and 26 black-and-white groups with topological NPs, including the space group of ferromagnetic MnSi. Thus, the identification of symmetry-enforced TPs on the FS of MnSi that may be controlled with a magnetic field suggests the existence of similar properties, amenable for technological exploitation, in a large number of materials., Comment: accepted version prior to processing by editorial staff

We discover three-dimensional intertwined Weyl phases, by developing a theory to create topological phases. The theory is based on intertwining existing topological gapped and gapless phases protected by the same crystalline symmetry. The intertwined Weyl phases feature both unconventional Weyl semimetallic (monopole charge>1) and higher-order topological phases, and more importantly, their exotic intertwining. While the two phases are independently stabilized by the same symmetry, their intertwining results in the specific distribution of them in the bulk. The construction mechanism allows us to combine different kinds of unconventional Weyl semimetallic and higher-order topological phases to generate distinct phases. Remarkably, on 2D surfaces, the intertwining causes the Fermi-arc topology to change in a periodic pattern against surface orientation. This feature provides a characteristic and feasible signature to probe the intertwining Weyl phases. Moreover, we provide guidelines for searching candidate materials, and elaborate on emulating the intertwined double-Weyl phase in cold-atom experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We study the occurrence of symmetry-enforced topological band crossings in tetragonal crystals with strong spin-orbit coupling. By computing the momentum dependence of the symmetry eigenvalues and the global band topology in the entire Brillouin zone, we determine all symmetry-enforced band crossings in tetragonal space groups. In particular, we classify all Dirac and Weyl degeneracies on points, lines, and planes, and find a rich variety of topological degeneracies. This includes, among others, double Weyl points, fourfold-double Weyl points, fourfold-quadruple Weyl points, Weyl and Dirac nodal lines, as well as topological nodal planes. For the space groups with symmetry-enforced Weyl points, we determine the minimal number of Weyl points for a given band pair and, remarkably, find that materials in space groups 119 and 120 can have band pairs with only two Weyl points in the entire Brillouin zone. This simplifies the topological responses, which would be useful for device applications. Using the classification of symmetry-enforced band crossings, we perform an extensive database search for candidate materials with tetragonal space groups. Notably, we find that Ba$_5$In$_4$Bi$_5$ and NaSn$_5$ exhibit twofold and fourfold Weyl nodal lines, respectively, which cross the Fermi energy. Hf$_3$Sb and Cs$_2$Tl$_3$ have band pairs with few number of Weyl points near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, we show that Ba$_3$Sn$_2$ has Weyl points with an accordion dispersion and topological nodal planes, while AuBr and Tl$_4$PbSe$_3$ possess Dirac points with hourglass dispersions. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. Measurement and astrophysical interpretation of characteristic gamma-ray lines from nucleosynthesis was one of the prominent science goals of the INTEGRAL mission and in particular its spectrometer SPI. Emission from 26Al and from 60Fe decay lines originates from accumulated ejecta of nucleosynthesis sources, and appears diffuse in nature. 26Al and 60Fe are believed to originate mostly from massive star clusters. Gamma-ray observations open an interesting window to trace the fate and flow of nucleosynthesis ejecta, after they have left the immediate sources and their birth sites, and on their path to mix with ambient interstellar gas. The INTEGRAL 26Al emission image confirms earlier findings of clumpiness and an extent along the entire plane of the Galaxy, supporting its origin from massive-star groups. INTEGRAL spectroscopy resolved the line and found Doppler broadenings and systematic shifts from large-scale galactic rotation. But an excess velocity of ~200 km/s suggests that 26Al decays preferentially within large superbubbles that extend in forward directions between spiral arms. The detection of 26Al line emission from nearby Orion and the Eridanus superbubble supports this interpretation. Positrons from beta+ decays of 26Al and other nucleosynthesis ejecta have been found to not explain the morphology of positron annihilation gamma-rays at 511 keV that have been measured by INTEGRAL. The 60Fe signal measured by INTEGRAL is diffuse but too weak for an imaging interpretation, an origin from point-like/concentrated sources is excluded. The 60Fe/26Al ratio is constrained to a range 0.2-0.4. Beyond improving precision of these results, diffuse nucleosynthesis contributions from novae (through 22Na radioactivity) and from past neutron star mergers in our Galaxy (from r-process radioactivity) are exciting new prospects for the remaining mission extensions., Comment: 38 pages, 12 Figures. Weyl superconductors feature Weyl points at zero energy in the three-dimensional (3D) Brillouin zone and arc states that connect the projections of these Weyl points on the surface. We report that higher-order Weyl superconductors can be realized in odd-parity topological superconductors with time-reversal symmetry being broken by periodic driving. Different from conventional Weyl points, the higher-order Weyl points in the bulk separate 2D first- and second-order topological phases, while on the surface, their projections are connected not only by conventional surface Majorana arcs, but also by hinge Majorana arcs. We show that the Weyl-point connectivity via Majorana arcs is largely enriched by the underlying higher-order topology and becomes anisotropic with respect to surface orientations. We identify the anisotropic Weyl-point connectivity as a characteristic feature of higher-order Weyl materials. As each 2D subsystem can be singled out by fixing the periodic driving, we propose how the Majorana zero modes in the 2D higher-order topological phases can be detected and manipulated in experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Context: Tracing unstable isotopes produced in supernova nucleosynthesis provides a direct diagnostic of supernova explosion physics. Theoretical models predict an extensive variety of scenarios, which can be constrained through observations of the abundant isotopes $^{56}$Ni and $^{44}$Ti. Direct evidence of the latter was previously found only in two core-collapse supernova events, and appears to be absent in thermonuclear supernovae.Aims: We aim to to constrain the supernova progenitor types of Cas A, SN 1987A, Vela Jr., G1.9+0.3, SN1572, and SN1604 through their $^{44}$Ti ejecta masses and explosion kinematics. Methods: We analyzed INTEGRAL/SPI observations of the candidate sources utilizing an empirically motivated high-precision background model. We analyzed the three dominant spectroscopically resolved de-excitation lines at 68, 78, and 1157\,keV emitted in the decay chain of $^{44}$Ti. The fluxes allow the determination of the production yields of $^{44}$Ti. Remnant kinematics were obtained from the Doppler characteristics of the lines. Results: We find a significant signal for Cas A in all three lines with a combined significance of 5.4$\sigma$. The fluxes are $(3.3 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{-5}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, and $(4.2 \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-5}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ for the $^{44}$Ti and $^{44}$Sc decay, respectively. We obtain higher fluxes for $^{44}$Ti with our analysis of Cas A than were obtained in previous analyses. We discuss potential differences. Conclusions: We obtain a high $^{44}$Ti ejecta mass for Cas A that is in disagreement with ejecta yields from symmetric 2D models. Upper limits for the other core-collapse supernovae are in agreement with model predictions and previous studies.
