Point cloud completion is a challenging task that involves predicting missing parts in incomplete 3D shapes. While existing strategies have shown effectiveness on point cloud datasets with regular shapes and continuous surfaces, they struggled to manage the morphologically diverse structures commonly encountered in real-world scenarios. This research proposed a new point cloud completion method, called SegCompletion, to derive complete 3D geometries from a partial shape with different structures and discontinuous surfaces. To achieve this, morphological segmentation was introduced before point cloud completion by deep hierarchical feature learning on point sets, and thus, the complex morphological structure was segmented into regular shapes and continuous surfaces. Additionally, each instance of a point cloud that belonged to the same type of feature could also be effectively identified using HDBSCAN (Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise). Furthermore, the multiscale generative network achieved sophisticated patching of missing point clouds under the same geometric feature based on feature points. To compensate for the variance in the mean distances between the centers of the patches and their closest neighbors, a simple yet effective uniform loss was utilized. A number of experiments on ShapeNet and Pheno4D datasets have shown the performance of SegCompletion on public datasets. Moreover, the contribution of SegCompletion to our dataset (Cotton3D) was discussed. This paper describes word segmentation granularity in Korean language processing. From a word separated by blank space, which is termed an eojeol, to a sequence of morphemes in Korean, there are multiple possible levels of word segmentation granularity in Korean. For specific language processing and corpus annotation tasks, several different granularity levels have been proposed and utilized, because the agglutinative languages including Korean language have a one-to-one mapping between functional morpheme and syntactic category. Thus, we analyze these different granularity levels, presenting the examples of Korean language processing systems for future reference. Interestingly, the granularity by separating only functional morphemes including case markers and verbal endings, and keeping other suffixes for morphological derivation results in the optimal performance for phrase structure parsing. This contradicts previous best practices for Korean language processing, which has been the de facto standard for various applications that require separating all morphemes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The complex morphology, conjunctive orthography and widespread occurrence of morphophonological alternation in the Nguni languages have given rise to several efforts towards morphological segmentation of tokens of Nguni languages. For supervised methods, annotated data is required, which currently exists as canonically segmented data in the NCHLT corpus and surface segmented data in the Ukwabelana corpus. In this paper, we present a method and segmentation strategy based on a computational grammar for isiZulu. The grammar, which itself has some limitations in processing speed and robustness to unexpected input, is used to create a new set of segmentations for the tokens of the Ukwabelana corpus. By training various models with the same architecture but on different datasets, we first showthat our approach enables us to match the performance of a model trained on pre-existing data. Morphological segmentation and stemming are foundational tasks in natural language processing. They have become effective ways to alleviate data sparsity in agglutinative languages because of the nature of agglutinative language word formation. Uyghur and Kazakh, as typical agglutinative languages, have made significant progress in morphological segmentation and stemming in recent years. However, the evaluation metrics used in previous work are character-level based, which may not comprehensively reflect the performance of models in morphological segmentation or stemming. Moreover, existing methods avoid manual feature extraction, but the model’s ability to learn features is inadequate in complex scenarios, and the correlation between different features has not been considered. Consequently, these models lack representation in complex contexts, affecting their effective generalization in practical scenarios. To address these issues, this paper redefines the morphological-level evaluation metrics: F1-score and accuracy (ACC) for morphological segmentation and stemming tasks. In addition, two models are proposed for morpheme segmentation and stem extraction tasks: supervised model and unsupervised model. The supervised model learns character and contextual features simultaneously, then feature embeddings are input into a Transformer encoder to study the correlation between character and context embeddings. The last layer of the model uses a CRF or softmax layer to determine morphological boundaries. In unsupervised learning, an encoder–decoder structure introduces n-gram correlation assumptions and masked attention mechanisms, enhancing the correlation between characters within n-grams and reducing the impact of characters outside n-grams on boundaries. Finally, comprehensive comparative analyses of the performance of different models are conducted from various points of view. Experimental results demonstrate that: (1) The proposed evaluation method effectively reflects the differences in morphological segmentation and stemming for Uyghur and Kazakh; (2) Learning different features and their correlation can enhance the model’s generalization ability in complex contexts. The non-invasive measurement of hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) in retinal vessels is based on spectrophotometry and the absorption spectral characteristics of the tissue. The dual-wavelength retinal images are simultaneously captured via retinal oximetry. SO2 is calculated by processing a series of images and by calculating the optic density ratio of two images. However, existing SO2 research is focused on the thick vessels in the high-clarity region of retinal images. However, the thin vessels in the low-clarity region could provide significant information for the detection and diagnosis of neovascular diseases. To this end, we proposed a novel hybrid vessel segmentation algorithm. Firstly, a median filter was employed for image denoising. Secondly, high- and low-clarity region segmentation was carried out based on a clarity histogram. The vessels in the high-clarity areas were segmented after implementing a Gaussian filter, a matched filter, and morphological segmentation. Additionally, the vessels in the low-clarity areas were segmented using a guided filter, matched filtering, and dynamic threshold segmentation. Finally, the results were obtained through image merger and morphological operations. The experimental results and analysis show that the proposed method can effectively segment thick and thin vessels and can extend the measuring range of dual-wavelength retinal oximetry. With the development of deep learning, the accuracy of Uyghur morphological segmentation has been dramatically improved, but the demand for data volume is high, while meta-learning method can effectively alleviate the model's reliance on data volume by learning from previous tasks, and is widely used in low- resource domains. Therefore, the meta- learning method of Uyghur morphological segmentation is proposed, which focuses on fast generalisation on new tasks by training on previous tasks and obtaining a set of parameters with the ability to quickly adapt to new tasks. The experiments are first constructed with N pseudo-meta-learning tasks based on the similarity of the data for the partitioning of meta-learning support sets and query sets. Afterwards, the Uyghur data is encoded using Transformer's encoder. Finally, the meta-learning method is used to achieve morphological segmentation for Uyghur language in few shot environments. Experimental results show the meta-learning method outperforms the pre-trained model in the few shot task, effectively avoiding overfitting of the model and mitigating the impact of data sparsity on the model. Morphological segmentation is a basic task in agglutinative language information processing, dividing words into the smallest semantic unit morphemes. There are two types of morphological segmentation: canonical segmentation and surface segmentation. As a typical agglutinative language, Uyghur usually uses statistical-based methods in canonical segmentation, which relies on the artificial extraction of features. In surface segmentation, the artificial feature extraction process is avoided by using the neural network. However, to date, no model can provide both segmentation results in Uyghur without adding features. In addition, morphological segmentation is usually regarded as a sequence annotation task, so label imbalance easily occurs in datasets. Given the above situation, this paper proposes an improved labelling scheme that joins morphological boundary labels and voice harmony labels for the two kinds of segmentation simultaneously. Then, a convolution network and attention mechanism are added to capture local and global features, respectively. Finally, morphological segmentation is regarded as a sequence labeling task of character sequences. Due to the problem of label proportion imbalance and noise in the dataset, a focal loss function with label smoothing is used. We propose an integrated deep learning model for morphological segmentation, morpheme tagging, part-of-speech (POS) tagging, and syntactic parsing onto dependencies, using cross-level contextual information flow for every word, from segments to dependencies, with an attention mechanism at horizontal flow. Our model extends the work of Nguyen and Verspoor ((2018). Proceedings of the CoNLL Shared Task: Multilingual Parsing from Raw Text to Universal Dependencies. The Association for Computational Linguistics, pp. 81–91.) on joint POS tagging and dependency parsing to also include morphological segmentation and morphological tagging. We report our results on several languages. Primary focus is agglutination in morphology, in particular Turkish morphology, for which we demonstrate improved performance compared to models trained for individual tasks. Τhis article contributes to the ongoing research on the importance of the strategy of morphological segmentation to vocabulary growth in foreign language learning. A total of 45 students of the department of Italian Language and Literature at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) were to segment 21 Italian words—among which there were 6 pseudo-words—and write their meaning with the use of an e-questionnaire. In turn, 10 out of 45 students participated in a focus group discussion. Results reveal no correlation between morphological segmentation and understanding of the meaning of words, except in the case of pseudo-words that were completely unknown to the participants. During the focus group, students attempted to recognize the productive and transparent suffixes of the words and discover their contribution to the building and the meaning of them. Other languages, such as English—L2/first foreign language for the majority of the interviewed students—assisted multilingual students in retrieving the meaning of the words implementing translanguaging practices. The students' responses show that they managed to segment the words correctly at a rate of 49.3%, while they understand their meaning due to their frequent use at a rate of 57.8%, without having been taught the morphology of L2. We investigate the usage of semantic information for morphological segmentation since words that are derived from each other will remain semantically related. We use mathematical models such as maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) and maximum a posteriori estimate (MAP) by incorporating semantic information obtained from dense word vector representations. Our approach does not require any annotated data which make it fully unsupervised and require only a small amount of raw data together with pretrained word embeddings for training purposes. The results show that using dense vector representations helps in morphological segmentation especially for low-resource languages. We present results for Turkish, English, and German. Our semantic MLE model outperforms other unsupervised models for Turkish language. Our proposed models could be also used for any other low-resource language with concatenative morphology. Fossil single-celled marine organisms known as foraminifera are widely used in oceanographic research. The identification of species is one of the most common tasks when analyzing ocean samples. One of the primary criteria for species identification is their morphology. Automatic segmentation of images of foraminifera would aid on the identification task as well as on other morphological studies. We pose this problem as an edge detection task for which capturing the correct topological structure is essential. Due to the presence of soft edges and even unclosed segments, state-of-the-art techniques have problems capturing the correct edge structure. Standard pixel-based loss functions are also sensitive to small deformations and shifts of the edges penalizing location more heavily than actual structure. Hence, we propose a homology-based detector of local structural difference between two edge maps with a tolerable deformation. This detector is employed as a new criterion for the training and design of data-driven approaches that focus on enhancing these structural differences. Our approaches demonstrate significant improvement on morphological segmentation of foraminifera when considering region-based and topology-based metrics. Morphologically rich and complex languages such as Arabic, pose a major challenge to neural machine translation (NMT) due to the large number of rare words and the inability of NMT to translate them. Unknown word (UNK) symbols are used to represent out-of-vocabulary words because NMT typically operates with a fixed vocabulary size. These rare words can be effectively encoded as sequences of subword units by using algorithms, such as byte pair encoding (BPE), to tackle the UNK problem. However, for languages with highly inflected and morphological variations, such as Arabic, the aforementioned method has its own limitations that make it not effective enough for translation quality. To alleviate the UNK problem and address the inconvenient behavior of BPE when translating the Arabic language, we propose to utilize a romanization system that converts Arabic scripts to subword units. We investigate the effect of our approach on NMT performance under various segmentation scenarios and compare the results with systems trained on original Arabic form. In addition, we integrate Romanized Arabic as an input factor for Arabic-sourced NMT compared with well-known factors, namely, lemma, part-of-speech tags, and morph features. Extensive experiments on Arabic-Chinese translation demonstrate that the proposed approaches can effectively tackle the UNK problem and significantly improve the translation quality for Arabic-sourced translation. Additional experiments in this study focus on developing the NMT system on Chinese-Arabic translation. Before implementing our experiments, we first propose standard criteria for the data filtering of a parallel corpus, which helps in filtering out its noise.

Dictionaries play an important role in neural machine translation (NMT). However, a large dictionary requires a significant amount of memory, which limits the application of NMT and can cause a memory error. This limitation can be solved by segmenting each word into morphemes in parallel source corpora. Therefore, this study introduces a new morphological segmentation approach for Turkic languages based on the complete set of endings (CSE), which reduces the vocabulary volume of the source corpora. Herein, we demonstrate the proposed CSE-based morphological segmentation method for the Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and Uzbek languages and present the results of computational NMT experiments for the Kazakh language. The NMT experiment results show that in comparison with byte-pair encoding (BPE)-based segmentation, the proposed CSE-based segmentation increases the bilingual evaluation understudy score of 0.5 and 0.2 points on average for Kazakh–English and English–Kazakh pairs, respectively. Furthermore, in comparison with the BPE-based segmentation, the proposed CSE-based segmentation approach reduced the vocabulary size in NMT by more than a factor of two. This feature of the proposed segmentation approach will be crucial for NMT as the size of the source corpora is increased to improve translation quality.

Morphological segmentation is the task of segmenting words into morphemes, the basic semantic units. It is one of the most fundamental tasks in natural language processing, especially for morphologically-rich languages. In this paper, we treat the morphological segmentation as a character sequence to sequence learning problem and propose an attention based neural network model for solving it. In our proposed method, we use a bidirectional long-short term memory as the encoder, which can increase the amount of input information available to the network and capture past and future information effectively. Additionally, an attention mechanism is presented in the decoder to make our morphological segmentation model focus on certain contexts of current character to be tagged. We conduct experiments on several languages such as Turkish, Finnish, and English. Crack is the most common typical feature of concrete deterioration, so routine monitoring and health assessment become essential for identifying failures and to set up an appropriate rehabilitation strategy in order to extend the service life of concrete structures. At present, image segmentation algorithms have been applied to crack analysis based on inspection images of concrete structures. The results of crack segmentation offering crack information, including length, width, and area is helpful to assist inspectors in surface inspection of concrete structures. This study proposed an algorithm of image segmentation enhancement, named morphological segmentation based on edge detection-II (MSED-II), to concrete crack segmentation. Several concrete pavement and building surfaces were imaged as the study materials. In addition, morphological operations followed by cross-curvature evaluation (CCE), an image segmentation technique of linear patterns, were also tested to evaluate their performance in concrete crack segmentation. The result indicates that MSED-II compared to CCE can lead to better quality of concrete crack segmentation. The least area, length, and width measurement errors of the concrete cracks are 5.68%, 0.23%, and 0.00%, respectively, that proves MSED-II effective for automatic measurement of concrete cracks. However, the reader’s engagement in morphological segmentation may depend on the language morphological richness and orthographic transparency, and the readers’ reading skills. The current study tested the common idea that morphological segmentation is enhanced in non-transparent orthographies to compensate for the absence of phonological information. Hebrew’s rich morphology and the dual version of the Hebrew script (with and without diacritic marks) provides an opportunity to study the interaction of orthographic transparency and morphological segmentation on the development of reading skills in a within-language design. Hebrew speaking 2nd (N = 27) and 5th (N = 29) grade children read aloud 96 noun words. Half of the words were simple mono-morphemic words and half were bi-morphemic derivations composed of a productive root and a morphemic pattern. In each list half of the words were presented in the transparent version of the script (with diacritic marks), and half in the non-transparent version (without diacritic marks). Our results show that in both groups, derived bi-morphemic words were identified more accurately than mono-morphemic words, but only for the transparent, pointed, script. For the un-pointed script the reverse was found, namely, that bi-morphemic words were read less accurately than mono-morphemic words, especially in second grade. Second grade children also read mono-morphemic words faster than bi-morphemic words. Finally, correlations with a standardized measure of morphological awareness were found only for second grade children, and only in bi-morphemic words. These results, showing greater morphological effects in second grade compared to fifth grade children suggest that for children raised in a language with a rich morphology, common and easily segmented morphemic units may be more beneficial for younger compared to older readers. Moreover, in contrast to the common hypothesis, our results show that morphemic segmentation does not compensate for the missing phonological information in a non-transparent orthography, but rather that morphological segmentation is most beneficial in the highly transparent script. These results are consistent with the idea that morphological and phonological segmentation processes occur simultaneously and do not constitute alternative pathways to visual word recognition.

The use of Satellites in remote sensing has been increased to the extent that now it becomes possible to retrieve information about changes occurring in any activity over the Earth. Remote sensing can be defined as a process of gathering and clarifying information for an object, area without having a physical contact with it. Meteorology, Glaciology, Geology, Agriculture, Land planning, etc. are various fields that deploy remote sensing. Presently, water detection using satellite images is one of the interesting research areas. In this research, firstly the review of the basics of remote sensing and its use for water detection has been done. A Hybrid method has been proposed which consists of kmeans clustering and morphological segmentation techniques for water detection. The MATLAB tool was used to implement both techniques. The performance of proposed technique has been evaluated in terms of accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. It has been observed that the proposed technique shows the better results.
