1. Measuring SES-related traits relating to technology usage: Two validated surveys

Abstract

Software producers are now recognizing the importance of improving their products' suitability for diverse populations, but little attention has been given to measurements to shed light on products' suitability to individuals below the median socioeconomic status (SES) -- who, by definition, make up half the population. To enable software practitioners to attend to both lower- and higher-SES individuals, this paper provides two new surveys that together facilitate measuring how well a software product serves socioeconomically diverse populations. The first survey (SES-Subjective) is who-oriented: it measures who their potential or current users are in terms of their subjective SES (perceptions of their SES). The second survey (SES-Facets) is why-oriented: it collects individuals' values for an evidence-based set of facet values (individual traits) that (1) statistically differ by SES and (2) affect how an individual works and problem-solves with software products. Our empirical validations with deployments at University A and University B (464 and 522 responses, respectively) showed that both surveys are reliable. Further, our results statistically agree with both ground truth data on respondents' socioeconomic statuses and with predictions from foundational literature. Finally, we explain how the pair of surveys is uniquely actionable by software practitioners, such as in requirements gathering, debugging, quality assurance activities, maintenance activities, and fulfilling legal reporting requirements such as those being drafted by various governments for AI-powered software.

2. An Ontology for Social Determinants of Education (SDoEd) based on Human-AI Collaborative Approach

Abstract

The use of computational ontologies is well-established in the field of Medical Informatics. The topic of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) has also received extensive attention. Work at the intersection of ontologies and SDoH has been published. However, a standardized framework for Social Determinants of Education (SDoEd) is lacking. In this paper, we are closing the gap by introducing an SDoEd ontology for creating a precise conceptualization of the interplay between life circumstances of students and their possible educational achievements. The ontology was developed utilizing suggestions from ChatGPT-3.5-010422 and validated using peer-reviewed research articles. The first version of developed ontology was evaluated by human experts in the field of education and validated using standard ontology evaluation software. Abstract

In recent years, foundation models (FMs) such as large language models (LLMs) and latent diffusion models (LDMs) have profoundly impacted diverse sectors, including music. This comprehensive review examines state-of-the-art (SOTA) pre-trained models and foundation models in music, spanning from representation learning, generative learning and multimodal learning. We first contextualise the significance of music in various industries and trace the evolution of AI in music. By delineating the modalities targeted by foundation models, we discover many of the music representations are underexplored in FM development. Then, emphasis is placed on the lack of versatility of previous methods on diverse music applications, along with the potential of FMs in music understanding, generation and medical application. By comprehensively exploring the details of the model pre-training paradigm, architectural choices, tokenisation, finetuning methodologies and controllability, we emphasise the important topics that should have been well explored, like instruction tuning and in-context learning, scaling law and emergent ability, as well as long-sequence modelling etc. A dedicated section presents insights into music agents, accompanied by a thorough analysis of datasets and evaluations essential for pre-training and downstream tasks. Finally, by underscoring the vital importance of ethical considerations, we advocate that following research on FM for music should focus more on such issues as interpretability, transparency, human responsibility, and copyright issues. The paper offers insights into future challenges and trends on FMs for music, aiming to shape the trajectory of human-AI collaboration in the music realm.

Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects., Comment: 535 authors from 84 institutions, 12 pages, 8 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract

We present an automated technique for computing a map between two genus-zero shapes, which matches semantically corresponding regions to one another. Lack of annotated data prohibits direct inference of 3D semantic priors; instead, current State-of-the-art methods predominantly optimize geometric properties or require varying amounts of manual annotation. To overcome the lack of annotated training data, we distill semantic matches from pre-trained vision models: our method renders the pair of 3D shapes from multiple viewpoints; the resulting renders are then fed into an off-the-shelf image-matching method which leverages a pretrained visual model to produce feature points. This yields semantic correspondences, which can be projected back to the 3D shapes, producing a raw matching that is inaccurate and inconsistent between different viewpoints. These correspondences are refined and distilled into an inter-surface map by a dedicated optimization scheme, which promotes bijectivity and continuity of the output map. We illustrate that our approach can generate semantic surface-to-surface maps, eliminating manual annotations or any 3D training data requirement. 31. Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, association with ocean currents and seasonal effects of upwelling using real-time Argos locations

Abstract

Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) are the most abundant marlin in Central American waters and are a species of socioeconomic and ecological importance with sport fishing generating millions of dollars (USD) and thousands of jobs each year. Concurrently, sailfish are caught as bycatch in purse seine and longline fishing gear potentially threatening the stability of the population and sportfishing community. In this study, Wildlife Computers Mk10 satellite transmitters were deployed on sailfish (n = 6) which relayed real time Argos satellite locations and post-release light-derived geolocation positional estimates. The two location recording methods produced similar tracking intervals—deployment date until the final location date—(Argos: 33.0 ± 13.5 d; GPE: 32.0 ± 11.2 d), and detection days—number of days the transmitter recorded a location—(Argos: 7.8 ± 6.0 d; GPE: 12.3 ± 8.5 d). In total, displacement distances from initial tagging to final (Argos) location ranged from 339.92 to 985.59 km and crossed 6 different Exclusive Economic Zones. During migrating, sailfish exhibited alternating with-current and against-current movements, a pattern that was consistent in both the upwelling and non-upwelling seasons. Despite the known fluctuations associated with seasonal upwelling in the eastern Pacific, sailfish experienced relatively stable microenvironments with average temperature variability remaining within 2°C. Behavioral modification to achieve this consistency could be through depth use (48 ± 28 m vs. 37 ± 47 m), though this mechanism alone seems unlikely to fully explain their ability to mitigate environmental dynamics. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying these behavioral adaptations and the ecological factors that contribute to sailfish resilience. Additionally, strengthened protection measures are critical to ensure the conservation of sailfish in Costa Rica, including elimination of all commercial sale.

33. Rethinking Music Technology Pedagogy: A New Zealand Focus

Abstract

In the creative sector, "music technology" refers to a wide range of musical practices, tools and devices enabled or facilitated by computers. Yet the music technology curriculum in New Zealand, as in other parts of the world, is dominated by two specific tools: commercial Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and notation software. In this chapter, I problematise this limitation by showing the pedagogical issues deriving from this exclusive model and by unpacking the ideological substrate of these tools, which is firmly grounded on neoliberal practices and principles. My analysis covers the ontology of these tools--what they are, what they do--and their business model. I then compare these tools against alternative approaches to music technology based on free-to-use, open-source software and programming languages based on principles of inclusion, collaboration and creative exploration.
