14. 'I found my people': Academic development, transformation and the Next Generation Professoriate at UCT

Abstract

Questions of inclusivity and transformation are central in higher education. In South Africa, these imperatives have the additional weight of post-apartheid redress. Attempts to address these questions seldom contemplate how transformation will be achieved. Efforts to achieve transformation often don’t attend to the critical question of how to nurture relationships among academics. We argue that building trust and a sense of belonging expands notions of academic development and transformation. In this article we discuss the Next Generation Professoriate (NGP), a mid-career academic development initiative at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Building human connections was an intentional part of this initiative’s transformative process. The programme emphasized global South location as a commonality as it sought to encourage new forms of knowledge production and collaboration. Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Guidelines recommend that the proximal seminal vesicles (PrSV) should be included in the clinical target volume for locally advanced prostate cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Verification and margins for the prostate may not necessarily account for PrSV displacement. The purpose was to determine the inter-fraction displacement of the PrSV relative to the prostate during radiotherapy. METHODS: Fiducials were inserted into the prostate, and right and left PrSV (RSV and LSV) in 30 prostate cancer patients. Correctional shifts for the prostate, right and left PrSV and pelvic bones were determined from each patient's 39 daily orthogonal portal images relative to reference digitally reconstructed radiographs. RESULTS: There was a significant displacement of the RSV relative to the prostate in all directions: on average 0.38 mm (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.26 to 0.50) to the left, 0.80-0.81 mm (CI 0.68 to 0.93) superiorly and 1.51 mm (CI 1.36 to 1.65) posteriorly. The LSV was significantly displaced superiorly to the prostate 1.09-1.13 mm (CI 0.97 to 1.25) and posteriorly 1.81 mm (CI 1.67 to 1.96), but not laterally (mean 0.06, CI -0.06 to 0.18). The calculated PTV margins (left-right, superior-inferior, posterior-anterior) were 4.9, 5.3-5.6 and 4.8 mm for the prostate, 5.2, 7.1-8.0 and 9.7 mm for the RSV, and 7.2, 7.5-7.6 and 8.6 mm for the LSV. CONCLUSION: There is a significant displacement of the PrSV relative to the prostate during radiotherapy. Greater margins are recommended for the PrSV compared to the prostate.

Abstract

This Guide is an introduction to the basic concepts of using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry to determine the state of water in cement, and hence the degree of cure of the cement and the cement microstructure, in particular the porosity. The Guide provides information on calibrating the equipment, the NMR responses that can typically be found from cement and on how to quantify the information obtained. Recommendations are made for the specification of suitable equipment, the set-up procedures required, and the experiments to be performed. Detailed results of an international round robin are included to demonstrate the usability, repeatability and accuracy of the method. The preparation of suitable non-cementitious reference materials is discussed.

Abstract

This article describes the provisional assessment of a short list of four candidate high-temperature thermal conductivity reference materials in a European research project, “Thermo.” These four candidate materials are low-density calcium silicate, amorphous silica, high-density calcium silicate, and exfoliated vermiculite. Based on initial tests on material composition and microstructure changes, dimensional stability, mechanical stability, chemical stability and uniformity, the best two candidate materials that would be considered for further detailed characterization in the next stage are low-density calcium silicate and high-density calcium silicate. These two materials are dimensionally, mechanically, and chemically stable, which are more robust and easier to handle than others. However, the specimens need to be selected to meet the requirement for material uniformity in terms of density, i.e., density variation within 2%.
