Abstract

The MIT/IEEE/Amazon GraphChallenge encourages community approaches to developing new solutions for analyzing graphs and sparse data derived from social media, sensor feeds, and scientific data to discover relationships between events as they unfold in the field. The anonymized network sensing Graph Challenge seeks to enable large, open, community-based approaches to protecting networks. Many large-scale networking problems can only be solved with community access to very broad data sets with the highest regard for privacy and strong community buy-in. Such approaches often require community-based data sharing. In the broader networking community (commercial, federal, and academia) anonymized source-to-destination traffic matrices with standard data sharing agreements have emerged as a data product that can meet many of these requirements. This challenge provides an opportunity to highlight novel approaches for optimizing the construction and analysis of anonymized traffic matrices using over 100 billion network packets derived from the largest Internet telescope in the world (CAIDA). This challenge specifies the anonymization, construction, and analysis of these traffic matrices. A GraphBLAS reference implementation is provided, but the use of GraphBLAS is not required in this Graph Challenge. As with prior Graph Challenges the goal is to provide a well-defined context for demonstrating innovation. 6. Structure prediction of stable sodium germanides at 0 and 10 GPa

Abstract

In this work we used $\textit{ab-initio}$ random structure searching (AIRSS) to carry out a systematic search for crystalline Na-Ge materials at both 0 and 10 GPa. The high-throughput structural relaxations were accelerated using a machine-learned interatomic potential (MLIP) fit to density-functional theory (DFT) reference data, allowing $\sim$1.5 million structures to be relaxed. At ambient conditions we predict three new Zintl phases, Na$_3$Ge$_2$, Na$_2$Ge and Na$_9$Ge$_4$, to be stable and a number of Ge-rich layered structures to lie in close proximity to the convex hull. The known Na$_\delta$Ge$_{34}$ clathrate and Na$_4$Ge$_{13}$ host-guest structures are found to be relatively stabilized at higher temperature by vibrational contributions to the free energy. Overall, the low energy phases exhibit exceptional structural diversity, with the expected mixture of covalent and ionic bonding confirmed using the electron-localisation function (ELF). The local Ge structural motifs present at each composition were determined using Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) descriptors and the Ge-K edge was simulated for representatives of each motif, providing a direct link to experimental x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Two Ge-rich phases are predicted to be stable at 10 GPa; NaGe$_3$ and NaGe$_2$ have simple kagome and simple hexagonal Ge lattices respectively with Na contained in the pores. NaGe$_3$ is isostructural with the MgB$_3$ and MgSi$_3$ family of kagome superconductors and remains dynamically stable at 0 GPa. Removing the Na from NaGe$_2$ results in the hexagonal lonsdalite Ge allotrope, which has a direct band gap., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The Open Databases Integration for Materials Design (OPTIMADE) application programming interface (API) empowers users with holistic access to a growing federation of databases, enhancing the accessibility and discoverability of materials and chemical data. Since the first release of the OPTIMADE specification (v1.0), the API has undergone significant development, leading to the upcoming v1.2 release, and has underpinned multiple scientific studies. In this work, we highlight the latest features of the API format, accompanying software tools, and provide an update on the implementation of OPTIMADE in contributing materials databases. We end by providing several use cases that demonstrate the utility of the OPTIMADE API in materials research that continue to drive its ongoing development.

Abstract

Expanding the scientific tools available to protect computer networks can be aided by a deeper understanding of the underlying statistical distributions of network traffic and their potential geometric interpretations. Analyses of large scale network observations provide a unique window into studying those underlying statistics. Newly developed GraphBLAS hypersparse matrices and D4M associative array technologies enable the efficient anonymized analysis of network traffic on the scale of trillions of events. This work analyzes over 100,000,000,000 anonymized packets from the largest Internet telescope (CAIDA) and over 10,000,000 anonymized sources from the largest commercial honeyfarm (GreyNoise). Neither CAIDA nor GreyNoise actively emit Internet traffic and provide distinct observations of unsolicited Internet traffic (primarily botnets and scanners). Analysis of these observations confirms the previously observed Cauchy-like distributions describing temporal correlations between Internet sources. The Gull lighthouse problem is a well-known geometric characterization of the standard Cauchy distribution and motivates a potential geometric interpretation for Internet observations. This work generalizes the Gull lighthouse problem to accommodate larger classes of coastlines, deriving a closed-form solution for the resulting probability distributions, stating and examining the inverse problem of identifying an appropriate coastline given a continuous probability distribution, identifying a geometric heuristic for solving this problem computationally, and applying that heuristic to examine the temporal geometry of different subsets of network observations. Application of this method to the CAIDA and GreyNoise data reveals a several orders of magnitude difference between known benign and other traffic which can lead to potentially novel ways to protect networks., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, IEEE HPEC 2023 (accepted)

Abstract

Metal-organic magnets (MOMs), modular magnetic materials where metal atoms are connected by organic linkers, are promising candidates for next-generation quantum technologies. MOMs readily form low-dimensional structures, and so are ideal systems to realise physical examples of key quantum models, including the Haldane phase, where a topological excitation gap occurs in integer-spin antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains. Thus far the Haldane phase has only been identified for $S=1$, with $S \geq 2$ still unrealised because the larger spin imposes more stringent requirements on the magnetic interactions. Here, we report the structure and magnetic properties of CrCl$_2$(pym) (pym=pyrimidine), a new quasi-1D $S=2$ AFM MOM. We show, using X-ray and neutron diffraction, bulk property measurements, density-functional theory calculations and inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS) that CrCl$_2$(pym) consists of AFM CrCl$_2$ spin chains ($J_1=-1.13(4)\;$meV) which are weakly ferromagnetically coupled through bridging pym ($J_2=0.10(2)\;$meV), with easy-axis anisotropy ($D=-0.15(3)\;$meV). We find that although small compared to $J_1$, these additional interactions are sufficient to prevent observation of the Haldane phase in this material. Nevertheless, the proximity to the Haldane phase together with the modularity of MOMs suggests that layered Cr(II) MOMs are a promising family to search for the elusive $S=2$ Haldane phase., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures, to be published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society

Abstract

Using ab initio dynamical mean-field theory we explore the electronic and magnetic states of layered Li$_x$MnO$_2$ as a function of $x$, the state of charge. Constructing real-space Wannier projections of Kohn-Sham orbitals based on the low-energy subspace of Mn $3d$ states and solving a multi-impurity problem, our approach focuses on local correlations at Mn sites. The antiferromagnetic insulating state in LiMnO$_2$ has a moderate N\'{e}el temperature of $T_N=296\,K$ in agreement with experimental studies. Upon delithiation the system proceeds through a number of states: ferrimagnetic correlated metals at $x$=0.92, 0.83; multiple charge disproportionated ferromagnetic correlated metals with large quasiparticle weights at $x$=0.67, 0.50, 0.33; ferromagnetic metals with small quasiparticle weights at $x$=0.17, 0.08 and an antiferromagnetic insulator for the fully delithiated state, $x=0.0$. At moderate states of charge, $x=0.67-0.33$, a mix of +3/+4 formal oxidation states of Mn is observed, while the overall nominal oxidation of Mn state changes from +3 in LiMnO$_2$ to +4 in MnO$_2$. In all these cases the high-spin state emerges as the most likely state in our calculations considering the full $d$~manifold of Mn based on the proximity of $e_g$ levels in energy to $t_{2g}$. The quasiparticle peaks in the correlated metallic states were attributed to polaronic states based on previous literature for similar isoelectronic JT driven materials, arising due to non-Fermi liquid type behaviour of the strongly correlated system.

Weighted quadratic estimates are proved for certain bisectorial firstorder differential operators with bounded measurable coefficients which are (not necessarily pointwise) accretive, on complete manifolds with positive injectivity radius. As compared to earlier results, Ricci curvature is only assumed to be bounded from below, and the weight is only assumed to be locally in A^2. Abstract

Modern network sensors continuously produce enormous quantities of raw data that are beyond the capacity of human analysts. Cross-correlation of network sensors increases this challenge by enriching every network event with additional metadata. These large volumes of enriched network data present opportunities to statistically characterize network traffic and quickly answer a key question: "What are the primary cyber characteristics of my network data?" The Python GraphBLAS and PyD4M analysis frameworks enable anonymized statistical analysis to be performed quickly and efficiently on very large network data sets. This approach is tested using billions of anonymized network data samples from the largest Internet observatory (CAIDA Telescope) and tens of millions of anonymized records from the largest commercially available background enrichment capability (GreyNoise). The analysis confirms that most of the enriched variables follow expected heavy-tail distributions and that a large fraction of the network traffic is due to a small number of cyber activities. This information can simplify the cyber analysts' task by enabling prioritization of cyber activities based on statistical prevalence. -- Los sensores de red modernos producen enormes cantidades de datos sin procesar que est\'an m\'as all\'a de la capacidad del an\'alisis humano. Abstract

By including phonon-assisted transitions within plane-wave DFT methods for calculating the X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS) we obtain the Al K-edge XAS at 300 K for two Al$_2$O$_3$ phases. The 300 K XAS reproduces the pre-edge peak for $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$, which is not visible at the static-lattice level of approximation. The 300 K XAS for $\gamma$-Al$_2$O$_3$ correctly describes two out of the three experimental peaks. We show that the second peak arises from 1s to mixed $s$-$p$ transitions and is absent in the 0 K XAS. This letter serves as a basis for future applications, as the method is generalizable to any atom and edge.

Abstract

The Internet has become a critical component of modern civilization requiring scientific exploration akin to endeavors to understand the land, sea, air, and space environments. Understanding the baseline statistical distributions of traffic are essential to the scientific understanding of the Internet. Correlating data from different Internet observatories and outposts can be a useful tool for gaining insights into these distributions. This work compares observed sources from the largest Internet telescope (the CAIDA darknet telescope) with those from a commercial outpost (the GreyNoise honeyfarm). Neither of these locations actively emit Internet traffic and provide distinct observations of unsolicited Internet traffic (primarily botnets and scanners). Newly developed GraphBLAS hyperspace matrices and D4M associative array technologies enable the efficient analysis of these data on significant scales. The CAIDA sources are well approximated by a Zipf-Mandelbrot distribution. Over a 6-month period 70\% of the brightest (highest frequency) sources in the CAIDA telescope are consistently detected by coeval observations in the GreyNoise honeyfarm. This overlap drops as the sources dim (reduce frequency) and as the time difference between the observations grows. The probability of seeing a CAIDA source is proportional to the logarithm of the brightness. The temporal correlations are well described by a modified Cauchy distribution. Abstract

Adversarial Internet robots (botnets) represent a growing threat to the safe use and stability of the Internet. Botnets can play a role in launching adversary reconnaissance (scanning and phishing), influence operations (upvoting), and financing operations (ransomware, market manipulation, denial of service, spamming, and ad click fraud) while obfuscating tailored tactical operations. Reducing the presence of botnets on the Internet, with the aspirational target of zero, is a powerful vision for galvanizing policy action. Setting a global goal, encouraging international cooperation, creating incentives for improving networks, and supporting entities for botnet takedowns are among several policies that could advance this goal. These policies raise significant questions regarding proper authorities/access that cannot be answered in the abstract. Systems analysis has been widely used in other domains to achieve sufficient detail to enable these questions to be dealt with in concrete terms. Defeating botnets using an observe-pursue-counter architecture is analyzed, the technical feasibility is affirmed, and the authorities/access questions are significantly narrowed. Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoporosis (OP) are two comorbid complex inflammatory conditions with evidence of shared genetic background and causal relationships. We aimed to clarify the genetic architecture underlying RA and various OP phenotypes while additionally considering an inflammatory component, C-reactive protein (CRP). Genome-wide association study summary statistics were acquired from the GEnetic Factors for OSteoporosis Consortium, Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research Consortium and UK Biobank. Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to detect the presence of causal relationships. Colocalization analysis was performed to determine shared genetic variants between CRP and OP phenotypes. Analysis of pleiotropy between traits owing to shared causal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was performed using PL eiotropic A nalysis under CO mposite null hypothesis (PLACO). MR analysis was suggestive of horizontal pleiotropy between RA and OP traits. RA was a significant causal risk factor for CRP (β = 0.027, 95% confidence interval = 0.016-0.038). There was no evidence of CRP→OP causal relationship, but horizontal pleiotropy was apparent. Colocalization established shared genomic regions between CRP and OP, including GCKR and SERPINA1 genes. Pleiotropy arising from shared causal SNPs revealed through the colocalization analysis was all confirmed by PLACO. These genes were found to be involved in the same molecular function 'protein binding' (GO:0005515) associated with RA, OP and CRP. We identified three major components explaining the epidemiological relationship among RA, OP and inflammation: (1) Pleiotropy explains a portion of the shared genetic relationship between RA and OP, albeit polygenically; (2) RA contributes to CRP elevation and (3) CRP, which is influenced by RA, demonstrated pleiotropy with OP.
