Abstract

Marine traffic is increasing globally yet collisions with endangered megafauna such as whales, sea turtles, and planktivorous sharks go largely undetected or unreported. Collisions leading to mortality can have population-level consequences for endangered species. Hence, identifying simultaneous space use of megafauna and shipping throughout ranges may reveal as-yet-unknown spatial targets requiring conservation. However, global studies tracking megafauna and shipping occurrences are lacking. Here we combine satellite-tracked movements of the whale shark, Rhincodon typus, and vessel activity to show that 92% of sharks’ horizontal space use and nearly 50% of vertical space use overlap with persistent large vessel (>300 gross tons) traffic. Collision-risk estimates correlated with reported whale shark mortality from ship strikes, indicating higher mortality in areas with greatest overlap. Hotspots of potential collision risk were evident in all major oceans, predominantly from overlap with cargo and tanker vessels, and were concentrated in gulf regions, where dense traffic co-occurred with seasonal shark movements. Nearly a third of whale shark hotspots overlapped with the highest collision-risk areas, with the last known locations of tracked sharks coinciding with busier shipping routes more often than expected. Depth-recording tags provided evidence for sinking, likely dead, whale sharks, suggesting substantial “cryptic” lethal ship strikes are possible, which could explain why whale shark population declines continue despite international protection and low fishing-induced mortality. Mitigation measures to reduce ship-strike risk should be considered to conserve this species and other ocean giants that are likely experiencing similar impacts from growing global vessel traffic. more...

Abstract

Bycatch mortality is a major factor contributing to shark population declines. Post-release mortality (PRM) is particularly difficult to quantify, limiting the accuracy of stock assessments. We paired blood-stress physiology with animal-borne accelerometers to quantify PRM rates of sharks caught in a commercial bottom longline fishery. Blood was sampled from the same individuals that were tagged, providing direct correlation between stress physiology and animal fate for sandbar (Carcharhinus plumbeus, N = 130), blacktip (C. limbatus, N = 105), tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier, N = 52), spinner (C. brevipinna, N = 14), and bull sharks (C. leucas, N = 14). PRM rates ranged from 2% and 3% PRM in tiger and sandbar sharks to 42% and 71% PRM in blacktip and spinner sharks, respectively. Decision trees based on blood values predicted mortality with >67% accuracy in blacktip and spinner sharks, and >99% accuracy in sandbar sharks. Ninety percent of PRM occurred within 5 h after release and 59% within 2 h. Blood physiology indicated that PRM was primarily associated with acidosis and increases in plasma potassium levels. Total fishing mortality reached 62% for blacktip and 89% for spinner sharks, which may be under-estimates given that some soak times were shortened to focus on PRM. Our findings suggest that no-take regulations may be beneficial for sandbar, tiger, and bull sharks, but less effective for more susceptible species such as blacktip and spinner sharks. more...

5. Temporal niche partitioning as a novel mechanism promoting co-existence of sympatric predators in marine systems

Abstract

Niche partitioning of time, space or resources is considered the key to allowing the coexistence of competitor species, and particularly guilds of predators. However, the extent to which these processes occur in marine systems is poorly understood due to the difficulty in studying fine-scale movements and activity patterns in mobile underwater species. Here, we used acceleration data-loggers to investigate temporal partitioning in a guild of marine predators. Six species of co-occurring large coastal sharks demonstrated distinct diel patterns of activity, providing evidence of strong temporal partitioning of foraging times. This is the first instance of diel temporal niche partitioning described in a marine predator guild, and is probably driven by a combination of physiological constraints in diel timing of activity (e.g. sensory adaptations) and interference competition (hierarchical predation within the guild), which may force less dominant predators to suboptimal foraging times to avoid agonistic interactions. Temporal partitioning is often thought to be rare compared to other partitioning mechanisms, but the occurrence of temporal partitioning here and similar characteristics in many other marine ecosystems (multiple predators simultaneously present in the same space with dietary overlap) introduces the question of whether this is a common mechanism of resource division in marine systems. more...

Abstract

Laser-induced depth profiling was applied to the investigation of galvanised steel sheets as a typical modern multi-layer coating system for environmental corrosion protection. The samples were ablated stepwise by the use of two different wavelengths of a frequency-converted Nd:YAG-laser, 266 nm and 532 nm, with a pulse duration of τ = 4 ns at fluences ranging from F = 50 to 250 J cm −2 . The emission light of the resulting plasma was analysed as a function of both penetration depth and elemental spectrum in terms of linear correlation analysis. Elemental depth profiles were calculated and compared to EDX-cross sections of the cut sample. A proven mathematical algorithm designed for the reconstruction of layer structures from distorted emission traces caused by the Gaussian ablation profile can even resolve thin intermediate layers in terms of depth and thickness. The obtained results were compared to a purely thermally controlled ablation model. Thereby light-plasma coupling is suggested to be a possible cause of deviations in the ablation behaviour of Al. The average ablation rate h as a function of fluence F for Ni ranges from 1 to 3.5 μm/pulse for λ = 266 nm as well as for λ = 532 nm. In contrast, the range of h for Al differs from 2 to 4 μm/pulse for λ = 532 nm and 4 to 8 μm/pulse for λ = 266 nm in the exact same fluence range on the exact same sample. more...

Abstract

We show the temporal change in repassivation mechanism as a time-dependent linear combination of a high-field model of oxide growth (HFM) and the point defect model (PDM). The observed switch in transient repassivation current-decrease under potentiostatic control occurs independently of the active electrode size and effective repassivation time for all applied overpotentials. For that, in situ depassivation of plasma electrolytically oxidized (PEO) coatings on aluminium was performed with nanosecond laser pulses at 266 nm and the repassivation current transients were recorded as a function of pulse number. A mathematical model combines the well established theories of oxide-film formation and growth kinetics, giving insight in the non linear transient behaviour of micro-defect passivation. According to our findings, the repassivation process can be described as a charge consumption via two concurrent channels. While the major current-decay at the very beginning of the fast healing oxide follows a point-defect type exponential damping, the HFM mechanism supersedes gradually, the longer the repassivation evolves. Furthermore, the material seems to reminisce former laser treatments via defects built-in during depassivation, leading to a higher charge contribution of the PDM mechanism at higher pulse numbers. more...

LIBS is a proven method for elemental analysis. It needs little to no sample preparation and relies solely on optical access to the sample. LIBS has therefore been handled as a promising analytical method for layered or structured samples with the potential to replace metallurgic cross-sections followed by SEM/EDX raster screenings. Due to the strong dependency of the ablation process on changing crater geometries, laser fluence, and plasma dynamics (e.g. laser absorption and scattering by the plasma, material dependent optical depth, reflecting coefficients, scattering processes, etc.), attributing an absolute depth to the number of laser pulses applied to the sample is not trivial. In this work, we show absolute depth recognition based on single-spot, non-scanning optical coherence tomography on LIBS craters produced with a standard LIBS setup. Abstract

Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonosis affecting humans and a wide range of domesticated and wild animal species. An important element for effective disease containment is to improve knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of afflicted communities. This study aimed to assess the KAP related to brucellosis at the human–animal interface in an endemic area of Egypt and to identify the risk factors for human infection. A matched case–control study was conducted at the central fever hospitals located in six governorates in northern Egypt. Face‐to‐face interviews with cases and controls were conducted using a structured questionnaire. In total, 40.7% of the participants owned farm animals in their households. The overall mean practice score regarding animal husbandry, processing and consumption of milk and dairy products were significantly lower among cases compared with controls (−12.7 ± 18.1 vs. 0.68 ± 14.2, respectively; p < .001). Perceived barriers for notification of animal infection/abortion were predominate among cases and positively correlated with participants’ education. The predictors of having brucellosis infection were consumption of unpasteurized milk or raw dairy products and practicing animal husbandry. Applying protective measures against infection significantly reduced its risk. A model predicting risk factors for brucellosis among those who own animal showed that frequent abortions per animal increased the chance for brucellosis infection among human cases by 50‐fold (95% CI: 8.8–276.9), whereas the use of protective measures in animal care reduced the odds (OR = 0.11 [95% CI: 0.03–0.45]). In conclusion, consumption of unprocessed dairy products was equally important as contact with infected/aborted animals as major risk factors for Brucella spp. infection among humans in Egypt. Abstract

In this study, galvanic coatings of Cu and Ni, typically applied in industrial standard routines, were investigated. Ablation experiments were carried out using the first two harmonic wavelengths of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser and the resulting plasma spectra were analysed using a linear Pearson correlation method. For both wavelengths the absorption/ablation behaviour as well as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) depth profiles were studied varying laser fluences between 4.3–17.2 J/cm$$^2$$ at 532 nm and 2.9–11.7 J/cm$$^2$$ at 1064 nm. The LIBS-stratigrams were compared with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of cross-sections. The ablation rates were calculated and compared to theoretical values originating from a thermal ablation model. Generally, higher ablation rates were obtained with 532 nm light for both materials. The light–plasma interaction is suggested as possible cause of the lower ablation rates in the infrared regime. Abstract

The ability to produce estimates of the metabolic rate of free-ranging animals is fundamental to the study of their ecology. However, measuring the energy expenditure of animals in the field has proved difficult, especially for aquatic taxa. Accelerometry presents a means of translating metabolic rates measured in the laboratory to individuals studied in the field, pending appropriate laboratory calibrations. Such calibrations have only been performed on a few fish species to date, and only one where the effects of temperature were accounted for. Here, we present calibrations between activity, measured as overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA), and metabolic rate, measured through respirometry, for nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum), lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) and blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus). Calibrations were made at a range of volitional swimming speeds and experimental temperatures. Linear mixed models were used to determine a predictive equation for metabolic rate based on measured ODBA values, with the optimal model using ODBA in combination with activity state and temperature to predict metabolic rate in lemon and nurse sharks, and ODBA and temperature to predict metabolic rate in blacktip sharks. 17. Outcome of valve repair and the cox maze procedure for mitral regurgitation and associated atrial fibrillation

Abstract

Objective: The objective was to determine whether the Cox maze procedure provides adjunctive benefit in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing mitral valve repair. Methods: We compared the outcome of 39 patients who had the Cox maze procedure plus mitral valve repair between January 1993 and December 1996 (maze group) with that of 58 patients with preoperative atrial fibrillation who had mitral valve repair during the same interval by the same surgeons (control group). Patients in the 2 cohorts were similar for age, gender, preoperative New York Heart Association class III or IV, and duration of preoperative atrial fibrillation. The control group had a higher incidence of previous heart surgery and coronary artery disease. Results: No operative deaths occurred, and 1 patient in each group required pacemaker implantation after the operation. Duration of cardiopulmonary bypass (122 +/- 40 minutes vs 58 +/- 27 minutes, P < .0001) and hospitalization (12.6 +/- 6.4 vs 9.3 +/- 3.4 days, P < .0025) were prolonged in patients having the Cox maze procedure. Overall, 2-year survival was similar (92% +/- 5% for maze patients and 96% +/- 3% for controls). Freedom from atrial fibrillation in the maze group was 74% +/- 8% 2 years after the operation compared with 27% +/- 7% for the control group (P < .0001). Freedom from stroke or anticoagulant-associated bleeding in the maze group was 100% 2 years after the operation compared with 90% +/- 8% in the control group (P = .04). At most recent follow-up, 82% of maze patients were in normal sinus rhythm (53% in control group). Conclusion: The addition of the Cox maze procedure to mitral valve repair is safe and effective for selected patients, and elimination of atrial fibrillation decreased late complications. 18. Bypass conduit vessel wall biology substantially influences downstream myocardial contractile response to injury from ischemia and reperfusion

Abstract

Coronary vascular intraluminal release of endogenous endothelium-derived substances, such as prostacyclin, may affect downstream cardiac myocyte contractile function. With a ''chronic'' canine model of endothelialized and deendothelialized internal thoracic artery coronary grafts, we tested the hypothesis that higher basal release of endothelium-derived prostacyclin in internal thoracic artery bypass conduit effluent accelerates functional recovery of postischemic stunned myocardium in the intact circulation. Eleven dogs underwent left internal thoracic artery-left circumflex artery bypass, and the proximal circumflex artery was then ligated. Internal thoracic artery conduit endothelium was denuded by balloon catheter in five dogs before grafting and left intact in six dogs. After 7 days, awake dogs were studied to measure myocardial segment length in the circumflex region with ultrasonic dimension transducers, left ventricular pressure with micromanometers, and circumflex artery flow with an ultrasonic flow probe. Regional contractile function was quantified by the area beneath the linear preload recruitable stroke work relationship at baseline and at intervals after a 15-minute circumflex graft occlusion followed by 3 hours of reperfusion. Heart rate, left ventricular peak pressure, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, left ventricular peak first derivative of pressure (dP/dt), and circumflex flow were similar (all p not significant) in endothelialized and nonendothelialized dogs during ischemia and reperfusion. Ischemia reduced the preload recruitable stroke work relationship to 44% +/- 35% of control values ( p < 0.01) in endothelialized dogs and to 47% +/- 18% of control values in nonendothelialized dogs ( p < 0.01) at 15 minutes of reperfusion, indicating a similar ( p not significant) initial degree of injury. During 3 hours of reperfusion, the preload recruitable stroke work relationship returned to 51% +/- 17% of control values in endothelialized dogs but to only 35% +/- 20% of control values in nonendothelialized dogs ( p < 0.02). Basal intraluminal release of endogenous prostanoids in excised internal thoracic artery conduits was subsequently quantified by ex vivo bioassay of vasoactive properties of conduit effluent on normal coronary artery smooth muscle. Endothelialized conduits induced greater smooth muscle relaxation than did nonendothelialized conduits (67% vs 23%), and this increased relaxation by endothelialized conduits was eliminated by indomethacin, a blocker of prostanoid synthesis. These data indicate that coronary bypass conduit endothelium-derived substances, such as prostacyclin, significantly influence downstream myocardial contractile response to ischemia and reperfusion, independent of alterations in coronary flow in the intact circulation. 19. Aortic valve replacement in patients aged eighty years and older: Early and long-term results

Abstract

We have studied 322 patients, 80 years of age or older, who underwent aortic valve replacement between June 1971 and December 1992. Two hundred six patients (64%) have had surgery since the end of 1985. Their mean age was 82.7 years (range 80 to 92 years). One hundred seventy-one (53%) were male and most (86%) were in New York Heart Association class III-IV. Fifty-seven patients (18%) required admission to the coronary care unit before the operation. One hundred seventy-nine patients (56%) underwent an urgent or emergency operation. Known cerebrovascular disease was present in 77 (24% of patients), aortic stenosis in 79%, aortic incompetence in 9%, and combined stenosis and incompetence in 12%. Associated procedures included bypass grafting in 139 (43%), mitral valve replacement/repair in 20 (6%), tricuspid valve repair in 6 (2%), and aortic annular enlargement in 38 (12%). Thirty patients (9.3%) were undergoing reoperation. Hospital mortality was 44 of 322 (13.7%). The median hospital stay was 11 days. On univariate analysis, significant predictors of hospital mortality were female sex, preoperative rest pain, New York Heart Association class III-IV, admission to the coronary care unit, heart failure, mitral valve disease, emergency/urgent operation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bypass grafting, valve size, peripheral vascular disease, and ejection fraction less than 0.35. On multivariate analysis the most important independent predictors of operative mortality were female gender ( p = 0.0001), renal impairment ( p = 0.001), bypass grafting ( p = 0.005), ejection fraction less than 0.35 ( p = 0.01), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( p = 0.028). Age and year of operation did not influence mortality. Five-year survivals for all patients and for operative survivors were 60.2% +/- 3.2% and 70.3% +/- 3.4%, respectively. On univariate analysis, factors that adversely affected long-term survival were coronary bypass grafting ( p = 0.007), more than two comorbidities ( p = 0.02), male gender ( p = 0.04), and ejection fraction less than 0.35 ( p = 0.04). On multivariate analysis, no factor was consistently significant for long-term survival. At most recent clinical follow-up 85% were angina free and 82% were in class I-II. At least 92% of patients, both at 1 year and at most recent clinical follow-up, believed they had significantly benefited from the operation: Conclusion: Risk factors for aortic valve replacement in octogenarians include female gender, unstable symptoms, poor ejection fraction, renal impairment, and bypass grafting. However, despite a hospital mortality higher than that reported for younger patients, the outlook for operative survivors is excellent, with good relief of symptoms and an expected survival normal for this particular age group. 20. Accelerated recovery of postischemic stunned myocardium after induced expression of myocardial heat-shock protein (HSP70)

Abstract

In vitro studies suggest that interventions targeted at myocardial gene regulation of endogenous cytoprotective elements, such as heat-shock protein, may attenuate myocardial ischemic injury. We tested the hypothesis that heat shock-induced expression of myocardial heat-shock protein before ischemia accelerates functional recovery of postischemic stunned myocardium in the intact circulation. Sixteen dogs underwent partial femoral arteriovenous bypass and core temperature was raised to 42^o C for 15 minutes in eight dogs (heat-shocked) and maintained at 37^o C in eight dogs (nonheat-shocked). After 24 hours dogs were studied to measure myocardial segment length in the circumflex artery region with ultrasonic dimension transducers, left ventricular pressure with a micromanometer, and circumflex coronary flow with an ultrasonic probe. Regional contractile function was quantified by the area beneath the linear preload recruitable stroke work relationship at baseline and at intervals during reperfusion after a 15-minute circumflex artery occlusion followed by 3 hours of reperfusion. Baseline and peak reperfusion hyperemic circumflex flows were 37 +/- 9 ml/min and 154 +/- 33 ml/min, respectively, in heat-shocked dogs (p < 0.001) and 46 +/- 24 ml/min and 171 +/- 57 ml/min, respectively, in nonheat-shocked dogs (p < 0.001), with no differences between groups (p = not significant) at any time during reperfusion. Heart rate and left ventricular peak pressure, end-diastolic pressure, and first derivative of left ventricular pressure were similar (all p = not significant) in heat-shocked and nonheat-shocked dogs during ischemia and reperfusion. Before ischemia, preload recruitable stroke work relationship did not differ (p = not significant) in heat-shocked and nonheat-shocked dogs. Ischemia reduced preload recruitable stroke work relationship to 32% +/- 8% control (p < 0.001) in heat-shocked dogs and to 19% +/- 15% control in nonheat-shocked dogs (p < 0.001) at 15 minutes of reperfusion, indicating a similar (p = not significant) initial degree of injury. During 3 hours of reperfusion, preload recruitable stroke work relationship returned to 80% +/- 38% control in heat-shocked dogs but to only 33% +/- 13% control in nonheat-shocked dogs (p < 0.0001). Myocardial expression of heat-shock protein, quantified by optical densitometry of Western blots using an antibody specific for HSP70, was greater in heat-shocked than in nonheat-shocked dogs (108 +/- 27 versus 71 +/- 14 densitometry units, p < 0.005). Exact causal mechanisms remain to be defined, but these data indicate (1) hyperthermic bypass triggers induction of myocardial heat-shock protein and (2) elevated myocardial heat-shock protein is associated with accelerated recovery of stunned myocardium.
