17. Designing and Implementing Peer Formative Feedback within Online Learning Environments

Abstract

With increasing need to achieve appropriate balance between learning support and self-regulation within the context of online learning, formative feedback has been identified as a viable means to achieve meaningful engagement. Specifically, this study sought to establish how peer-peer formative feedback was facilitated in an online course and to what extent this engaged students in meaningful learning experiences. This case study entailed an in-depth investigation into the design and implementation of an online course in a New Zealand university. The studied course was part of a postgraduate programme in continuing (in-service) teacher education. The study adopted a case study methodology with a bias on qualitative techniques. Online observations, analysis of the archived course discourse and interviews were utilised as sources of data. The data from multiple sources were subsequently triangulated to corroborate the evidence. The findings indicate that peer formative feedback promoted active learners' participation and meaningful engagement. The findings further showed that opportunities for dialogic peer formative feedback promoted learning support and self-regulation.

Abstract

Power systems are rapidly transitioning towards having an increasing proportion of electricity from inverter-based resources (IBR) such as wind and solar. An inevitable consequence of a power system transition towards 100% IBR is the loss of synchronous generators with their associated inertia, frequency, and voltage control mechanisms. To ensure future grid needs can be met, the source of system services to meet these needs must change from synchronous plants to IBR. Under this context, the main objective is to extensively review grid frequency stability challenges concerning the massive integration of IBR from the perspective of system operators. Following that, the newly established international fast frequency response services in different renewable dominant power systems to address low inertia challenges are compared from various perspectives. Finally, potential solutions based on various renewable enabling technologies and renewable sources are investigated from the standpoint of their expectation to play an active role in the energy system and to provide a wide range of system frequency services. The findings of this study provide a deep understanding of prospective frequency control solutions and an actionable dataset that will support various research and policy needs as we approach net-zero targets.

25. Online Formative Assessment in Higher Education: A Review of the Literature

Abstract

As online and blended learning has become common place educational strategy in higher education, educators need to reconceptualise fundamental issues of teaching, learning and assessment in non traditional spaces. These issues include concepts such as validity and reliability of assessment in online environments in relation to serving the intended purposes, as well as understanding how formative assessment functions within online and blended learning. This article provides a systematic qualitative review of the research literature on online formative assessment in higher education. As an integrative narrative review, the method applied in this review entailed systematic searching, reviewing, and writing this review of the literature to bring together key themes and findings of research in this field. The authors applied qualitative thematic criteria in selecting and reviewing the available literature from which they focused on identifying and analyzing the core themes that are central to the concept of formative assessment with a key focus on application of formative assessment within blended and online contexts. Various techniques were identified for formative assessment by the individual, peers and the teacher, many of which were linked with online tools such as self-test quiz tools, discussion forums and e-portfolios. The benefits identified include improvement of learner engagement and centrality in the process as key actors, including the development of a learning community. The key findings are that effective online formative assessment can foster a learner and assessment centered focus through formative feedback and enhanced learner engagement with valuable learning experiences. Ongoing authentic assessment activities and interactive formative feedback were identified as important characteristics that can address threats to validity and reliability within the context of online formative assessment. Abstract

This paper proposes a two‐phase optimization methodology to optimally dispatch the active/reactive power of battery energy storage systems (BESS) installed on the medium voltage distribution network to manage the violations and enhance the power quality and security. The first phase is look‐ahead scheduling that aims to flatten the grid power curve and optimize the network power factor over the scheduling horizon using forecasted demand and generation. The second phase is a real‐time model predictive control (MPC) introduced to adjust the BESS real power setpoints against network violations due to high uncertainties associated with the renewable generation and low carbon technologies as well as other unexpected events. Simulations were carried out for an actual 11 kV, 53‐node distribution network located in Northern Ireland for two case studies representing the winter and summer. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in enhancing the network operation through optimizing the power factor, reducing line losses, and mitigating stresses. Sudden over/under voltage events were solved through the real‐time phase efficiently without affecting the power factor or the line losses in a fast manner with a computation time of 0.52 s/time‐point which makes it suitable for real‐time control implementation. Abstract

Residential batteries are attracting prosumers due to their ability in reducing the electricity bill by maximizing the solar PV self-consumption as well as optimizing the time of use tariff (ToUT). Furthermore, the deployment of residential batteries is increasing due to their potential in supporting the network from the operator’s point of view. The control of residential batteries can be categorized into real-time and look-ahead. The real-time control usually aims to achieve self-consumption maximization (SCM) by charging the battery using the excess PV generation. The SCM can be adjusted to optimize the ToUT by charging during low ToUT periods when the PV generation is insufficient. The look-ahead control utilizes the forecasting to schedule the battery using an optimization solver. This work investigates the impact of these three different control strategies on battery degradation for different capacities. Other comparisons for the electricity bill reduction and network losses are also considered.
