This article details the use of the phrase 'national security' in political and public discourse around the time of Australia's Federation (1881–1921). It finds that while it was not present in policy or legislation until later, the phrase enjoyed noteworthy use in political debates and news media during the early Federal period. Further, the article finds that while military and defensive concerns were a common consideration of this early 'national security', there also existed a strong economic and social element, prefiguring the 'broadening' of security following the Cold War. A study of both in situ and detrital gold from different deposit types in British Columbia was undertaken to establish deposit-specific compositional characteristics in terms of alloy composition and suites of mineral inclusions. The study is based on 11,840 particles from 160 localities in which nine gold deposit types are represented, although there is a strong bias towards gold of orogenic, low-sulphidation epithermal, and alkalic porphyry origin. In general, Ag values in gold alloys are not a powerful discriminator for deposit type, but minor metals may prove useful where detectable, e.g., Cu in gold from ultramafic associations and Pd and Hg in gold from alkalic porphyry systems. The characterization of inclusion suites is far more illuminating, as they correlate strongly with the mineralogy of auriferous ores from different deposit types. This outcome has confirmed the validity of designing an indicator methodology based on inclusion suites and has permitted the prediction of inclusion suites for gold from other deposit types where data are more scarce. The compositional templates generated in the study were applied to identify the source deposit type(s) of gold from 41 localities (a total of 2916 detrital gold particles) where gold genesis was previously unknown. Antarctica is a crucial regulator of the world's climate, and as environmental security permeates global security, using Antarctic science to better understand climate is becoming increasingly pressing. Although the Australian Government has recognised that climate change poses 'a current and existential national security' threat and has acknowledged Antarctica's importance regarding the earth's global climate system, the focus of Australia's intelligence community pertaining to Antarctica currently remains restricted to upholding the military-security and diplomatic goals of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). This current focus aims to hedge against the possibility of conflict on, or over, the frozen continent via 'working the ATS', however, this paper argues that Antarctic climate science holds a greater capacity to deliver security outcomes for Australia. Antarctic climate science offers opportunities regarding intelligence for Antarctica, that is, securing Australia's Antarctic interests, as well as regarding intelligence from Antarctica; by enhancing natural disaster preparedness, bolstering broader strategic planning, as well as furthering diplomacy and the legitimisation of Australia's leadership on, and over, the frozen continent. It is recommended that the Commonwealth Government establish a climate intelligence working group to ensure the utility of climate science to security and intelligence is realised. A suite of six Devonian granites and one syenite were emplaced into the upper crust of northern Yukon between 364.8 ± 2.7 and 371.2 ± 1.4 Ma. The Bear Mountain syenite and related rhyolite porphyry in adjacent Alaska intruded at 52.3 ± 0.4 and 53.5 ± 0.2 Ma, respectively. A felsic volcaniclastic unit and quartz-phyric sill are newly documented adjacent to the Mount Sedgwick granite. The volcaniclastic unit may indicate the presence of a related volcanic edifice. The presence of xenocrystic zircon grains in most of the intrusions suggests initial emplacement of magmas began 10–20 Myr before final emplacement into the upper crust. A Famennian final intrusion age coincides with Late Devonian encroachment of Ellesmerian deformation into the region. Attendant crustal flexure, or evolving foreland structures, may have facilitated upward migration of the magmas. Geochemistry of the intrusions indicates that the Devonian magmatism was largely derived from partial melting of lower and middle crust, implying widespread mafic magmatic underplating in Middle to Late Devonian time. Only Dave Lord syenite retains evidence of an original mantle geochemical signature. Mantle underplating may have played a role in localizing extension, volcanism, and rifting that led to the Late Devonian opening of the Angayucham ocean basin. Zircon grains from a granitic pegmatite clast from conglomerate at the base of the Ross Island Formation on Grand Manan Island indicate an igneous crystallization age of 664.1 ± 4.6 Ma. The clast also contains abundant older inherited grains back to the Archean. Muscovite in the same clast and an additional similar clast yielded cooling ages of 607.0 ± 3.7 Ma and 619.6 ± 4.1 Ma, respectively, providing a maximum depositional age for the host conglomerate of the Ross Island Formation. The Seven Hundred Acre Island Formation in the Islesboro block in Penobscot Bay, Maine, contains a granitic pegmatite dyke of similar age, suggesting that it was close to the site of deposition of the Ross Island Formation of Grand Manan Island in the late Ediacaran. This suggestion is supported further by similarity in rock types and detrital zircon spectra between the Seven Hundred Acre Island Formation and the Thoroughfare and Kent Island formations on Grand Manan Island. Metamorphosed felsic volcanic rocks occur interlayered with metasedimentary schist in close association with a 7 km long metabasaltic (greenschist) horizon in the Otago Schist belt of Central Otago. The felsic metavolcanic rocks are weakly foliated and locally segregated and consist principally of quartz and albite. Geochemical analyses suggest phonolitic compositions and a general within-plate affinity for the felsic metavolcanics rocks, and a MORB/back arc basalt affinity for the associated metabasalts. Zircons from two felsic metavolcanic samples are stubby, sharply faceted, prismatic grains with no visible inherited cores, and are considered to be of primary magmatic origin. Calculated weighted average 206Pb-238U ages for zircons from the two felsic metavolcanic samples are 190.5 ± 0.6 Ma and 190.1 ± 0.3 Ma. We interpret these ages (late Aratauran-early Ururoan; middle Early Jurassic) to date the deposition of the Torlesse Terrane metasediments at that locality, and also possibly the emplacement of the associated metabasalts. Abstract: A detailed study of apatite and biotite compositions in multiple intrusive phases from five composite plutons in the northern Canadian Cordillera was undertaken with the aim of determining the composition of magmatic fluids relative to F:Cl:OH for several plutons―both barren and mineralizing―and for specific intrusive phases from each pluton that may be related to nearby tungsten skarns. Magmatic apatite and biotite compositions are consistent with a crustal source of magma, either derived from predominantly supracrustal rocks, and (or) derived from predominantly infracrustal rocks and fractionated to felsic compositions. Increasing MnO (±FeO and XF:XCl) with decreasing CaO in apatite broadly correlates with an increasing degree of magmatic differentiation, although Fe# vs. total aluminum in biotite is a better indicator of inter- and intra-plutonic differentiation. Anomalously iron-rich biotites occur in highly fractionated and (or) wallrock-contaminated phases of plutons associated with tungsten skarns. Estimates of magmatic fluid composition―calculated as the activity ratios log[a HCl / a HF] and log[a HOH / a HF] from apatite and biotite compositions―show several trends with respect to magmatic differentiation. Two barren plutons demonstrate that fluids in silicic magmas become HF enriched relative to HCl with increasing differentiation, although re-equilibration with late-stage sub-solidus or hydrothermal fluids may obscure this trend. The three intrusions with associated tungsten skarn mineralization, including the world-class Cantung deposit, also become HF-enriched with magmatic evolution. However, magmatic apatite and biotite in individual intrusive phases that are the most closely associated with mineralization have equilibrated with compositionally distinct fluids. In these particular intrusive phases, apatite appears to have equilibrated with an earlier HCl- and H2O-rich magmatic fluid, and biotite appears to have equilibrated with a later HCl- and (a particularly) H2O-rich magmatic fluid. The fluid in these magmas apparently evolved to a H2O-rich (or less saline) composition as the temperature of the magma decreased. None of the other intrusive phases, from either the barren or tungsten-associated plutons, have apatite and biotite activity ratios that are suggestive of equilibration with such an HCl/HF- and H2O/HF-rich fluid. Instead, the activity ratios calculated from apatite and biotite in intrusive phases that are not as closely associated with mineralization are well-coupled and unremarkable (although small variations are common), which would suggest that both minerals equilibrated with similar fluids. These intrusive phases do not appear to have produced a large quantity of saline hydrous fluid capable of seggregating and transporting tungsten. The identification of intrusive phases that did produce magmatic fluids that were anomalously enriched in HCl and H2O could, therefore, be a predictor of nearby tungsten skarn mineralization. Between 1978 and 2009, approximately 430,000 oz of placer gold were obtained from the Indian River and Black Hills Creek, which equates to roughly 20% of the production for the entire Yukon Territory during that period. The area is unglaciated, exposure is poor, and there are few known lode gold occurrences present. The technique of microchemical characterization of placer gold grains has been applied to illuminate the style(s) of source mineralization and their relationship to placer gold from the Klondike gold district immediately to the north. A total of 2,613 placer gold grains from 22 localities were characterised in terms of the Au, Ag, Cu, and Hg content of their alloy and associated suite of opaque mineral inclusions. A combination of alloy and inclusion mineralogy was used to define gold signatures which augmented the previous classification of orogenic gold in the Klondike. Gold type 3b (8-25% Ag) is the main component of the placers in lower Dominion Creek but is augmented and eventually replaced by type 3a gold (10-40% Ag) in placers in the main Indian River valley, probably through erosion of gold-bearing veins in the valley floor. Type 4 gold exhibits highly variable Ag which may contain Hg to a maximum of 11 wt.%. This gold type also hosts a distinctive inclusion assemblage of complex polymetallic sulphides, tellurides, sulfotellurides, and sulfosalts and has previously been ascribed to local low sulfidation epithermal mineralization. Placer gold in drainages radiating from Eureka Dome exhibits various proportions of types 3 and 4 gold depending on location, but type 3 gold forms the major component in Black Hills Creek and northerly flowing tributaries of the Indian River with the exception of Eureka and Montana creeks. Type 5 gold is found only in placers in the middle and lower Indian River. It is distinguished by slightly elevated (0.05-0.17%) Cu in the gold alloy, together with low (5-9%) Ag contents. Inclusions of Bi minerals, Cr-bearing magnetite and molybdenite within type 5 gold suggest derivation from an intrusion-related source. Candidates for such a source include undiscovered lode occurrences associated with Cretaceous age intrusions to the south of the Indian River, or deformed Cu-Au (−Mo) porphyry occurrences which are known to be present in the same area. This analysis of placer gold has indicated that the contribution of low sulfidation epithermal gold from Eureka Creek to the larger placers of the Indian River is minor. Consequently, the placer gold inventory of the Indian River is primarily orogenic in origin. Similarly, the characterization of placer gold in Blackhills Creek strongly suggests an orogenic source. This study has demonstrated for the first time that orogenic lode gold mineralization extends a considerable distance to the south of the southern Klondike goldfield. Abstract: Cashes Ledge igneous suite in the central Gulf of Maine is represented by 10 granitic and two felsic tuff samples collected from bedrock outcrops using the submersible Alvin in 1971–1972 and archived at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Laser ablation ICP-MS analyses of zircon grains yielded crystallization ages of 414.9±1.1Ma and 399.7±1.5Ma for two alkali feldspar granite samples, 407.0±1.9Ma for a syenogranite sample, and 384.4±2.3Ma and 383.9±1.6Ma for two felsic tuff samples. The samples contain iron-rich mafic minerals, including aegirine-augite, grunerite/ferroedenite, and annite. Most of the samples are alkaline to slightly peralkaline, with high concentrations of SiO2, Y, Zr, Nb, and REE, strong negative Eu anomalies, and positive epsilon Nd values (1.8 to 3.7). The suite resembles part of a belt of similar Silurian–Devonian rocks with ages between 426 and 370Ma now recognized in the central part of Avalonia in southeastern New England. They formed in a long-lived, likely extensional regime linked to subduction and subsequent complex transcurrent motions among Ganderia, Avalonia, and Meguma, culminating in the closure of the Rheic Ocean. Machias Seal Island in the northern Gulf of Maine consists of fine- to medium-grained weakly foliated quartz monzodiorite. Although previously inferred to be as young as Devonian, the quartz monzodiorite yielded an Ediacaran-Early Cambrian U-Pb (zircon) age of 542.0 ± 0.9 Ma. Typical Machias Seal Island quartz monzodiorite contains strongly zoned plagioclase (50%), about 30% mafic minerals (biotite and amphibole with relict cores of both ortho- and clinopyroxene, and 20% interstitial quartz and orthoclase. The average chemical composition (5 samples) has 60.6% SiO2, with relatively high Al2O3 (over 16%) and low K2O (2.8%). Overall, the chemical characteristics, including low Rb, Y, and Nb, are consistent with emplacement in a continental margin subduction zone. The quartz monzodiorite contains abundant ovoid metadioritic enclaves, likely of cognate origin. Age and compositional similarities strongly suggest correlation of Machias Seal Island quartz monzodiorite with the abundant ca. 550-525 Ma gabbroic to granitic plutons of the Brookville terrane on the mainland of southern New Brunswick. Its age is similar also to the ages of volcanic and some plutonic rocks on Grand Manan Island and in the New River terrane in mainland southern New Brunswick, strengthening the interpretation that all of these areas are part of Ganderia. Hence the Fundy Fault southeast of Machias Seal Island likely marks the boundary between Ganderia and Avalonia in the Gulf of Maine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New detrital mineral age and whole-rock geochemical data provide the first constraints on the composition and source of North American Triassic strata in the northern Canadian Cordillera. Conodont-bearing Triassic strata collected from five locations across west-central to southeastern Yukon contain trace-element ratios ((La/Yb)N = ~8; Eu/Eu* = ~0.66), εNd(248 Ma) values (–9 to –10), and detrital zircon ages (400–680, 980–1200, 1500–1650, 1800–2000 Ma) that correspond with those of coeval rocks in the Canadian Arctic Islands and the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin of British Columbia and Alberta. The majority of detrital zircons were cannibalized from Ellesmerian clastic wedge and western Laurentian margin strata and recycled into Triassic rocks. Conspicuous early Paleozoic and Neoproterozoic detrital zircons may have been ultimately derived from allochthonous rocks of Caledonian–Baltican affinity in northern North America, such as the Pearya and Arctic Alaska – Chukotka terranes. One Early Triassic unit in eastern Yukon contains ca. 360 Ma detrital muscovite, and samples from several localities include single-grain occurrences of Mississippian detrital zircon. Mississippian detrital mineral ages likely record a partial source from mid-Paleozoic rocks of the allochthonous Slide Mountain and Yukon–Tanana terranes following their Late Permian – Early Triassic emplacement onto the Cordilleran margin. More substantial evidence of terrane-derived sediment deposited along the North American margin may be further identified within Triassic strata that are exposed to the west (outboard) of our sample sites, immediately adjacent to the Slide Mountain and Yukon–Tanana terranes. Abstract: A new method for the fast, quantitative, automated morphological analysis of large numbers of discrete particles is reported. The method is built around a Java plugin coded for the open source program ImageJ, and utilizes automated image analysis to record morphological parameters. Conventional measurements (e.g., area, perimeter) as well as Fourier shape analysis parameters are produced. Preliminary results from the study of morphological changes of placer gold during alluvial transport using samples from the Klondike placer gold district in the western Yukon Territory, Canada show that the data produced by this model should allow for a quantitative transport distance:shape relationship to be defined. The large data set generated is also used to make a first examination of the utility of a number of previously unevaluated morphological parameters. Quantitative morphological characterization has numerous applications including the study of placer and tracer minerals, sedimentology, descriptive biology and archeological artifact examination. The >5 Moz (1 oz (troy) = 31.103 g) gold veins of the Liese Zone and nearby prospects in the Goodpaster Mining District of east central Alaska are spatially and temporally associated with late-Early to Late Cretaceous reduced granitoids that are divided into a granite suite, tonalite suite, and diorite suite in decreasing age. Synkinematic to postkinematic biotite ± hornblende granite, granodiorite, pegmatite, and two-mica granite with accessory garnet compose the granite suite (109–107 Ma). The tonalite suite (107–103 Ma) forms small to large bodies of postkinematic hornblende–biotite granodiorite to tonalite with rare granite. Intruding the granite and parts of the tonalite suites are aplite and pegmatite that grade through sugary pegmatoidal or aplitic quartz veins and finally into quartz veins along strike. The diorite suite (95.4–93.7 Ma) consists of small stocks of diorite to tonalite that intrude the older suites and are inferred to intrude the shallowly dipping auriferous quartz veins. Limited data indicate granitoid emplacement at 5–9 km depths, consistent with formation of the auriferous quartz veins based upon published fluid inclusion data. The weakly peraluminous granite and tonalite suites are distinguished by variable amounts of monazite and zircon whereas the diorite suite is metaluminous, contains <5% magnetite, and lacks monazite. All suites are subalkalic, calc-alkaline and have low magnetic susceptibilities, high large-ion lithophile element/high field-strength element (LILE/HFSE), and depleted Nb and Ti. The granite suite has higher 206Pb/204Pb values (19.4–19.6) than the diorite (19.1). Overall the granite and tonalite suites likely represent melts generated late during crustal thickening that intruded along shallowly dipping faults during exhumation, whereas the diorite suite represents postdeformation melts that underwent less interaction with the old silicic crust. This paper provides an integrated field and geochemical study of weakly alkalic, ~360 Ma mafic rocks from the Yukon–Tanana terrane in the Finlayson Lake region, southeastern Yukon. These mafic rocks occur as dykes and sills that crosscut older felsic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks (Kudz Ze Kayah unit) or as flows interlayered with carbonaceous metasedimentary rocks. The mafic rocks have signatures similar to those of ocean-island basalts, moderate TiO[sub 2] and P[sub 2] O[sub 5] contents, elevated high field strength element and light rare earth element contents, and ℇNd[sub 350] = +1.1. A subset of the dykes (group 4b) has similar geochemical characteristics but with higher Th/Nb and lower Nb/U ratios, higher Zr and light rare earth element contents, and ℇNd[sub 350] = –2.8. The geochemical and isotopic attributes of these rocks are consistent with formation from either lithospheric or asthenospheric sources during decompression melting of the mantle, with some rocks exhibiting evidence for crustal contamination (group 4b). The alkalic basalts are interpreted to represent ~360 Ma ensialic back-arc rifting and basin generation. It is envisioned that east-dipping subduction, represented by slightly older magmatic suites (Fire Lake unit), was disrupted by subduction hinge roll-back, westward migration of arc magmatism, and the onset of back-arc extension. Decompression melting of the mantle associated with back-arc generation resulted in mantle melting and the formation of the alkalic basalts. The spatial association of this mafic magmatism with crustally derived felsic volcanic rocks and contained volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralization suggests that the associated deposits (Kudz Ze Kayah, GP4F) formed within an ensialic back-arc environment.Cet article présente une étude intégrée de données de terrain et de géochimie de roches mafiques, ~360 Ma, faiblement alcalines, du terrane Yukon–Tanana dans la région du lac Finlayson, dans le sud-est du Yukon. Calc-alkaline batholiths of the Archaean Minto block, northeastern Superior Province, Canada, have pyroxene- and hornblende-bearing mineral assemblages inferred to have crystallized from hot, water-undersaturated magmas at 2·729–2·724 Ga. A regional amphibolite- to granulite-facies tectonothermal event at 2·70 Ga resulted in mild to negligible metamorphic effects on the dominantly granodioritic units. Geochemical, textural and thermobarometric studies define the crystallization history in compositions ranging from cumulate pyroxenite through quartz diorite, granodiorite, granite, and syn-magmatic gabbroic dykes. Early magmatic assemblages include orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, biotite, Fe–Ti oxides and ternary feldspar, indicating crystallization from magmas containing <2 wt % H2O at 1100–900°C. Water enrichment in the residual melt induced hornblende crystallization at 5 ± 1 kbar, 800–600°C. Characterized by a continuum of large ion lithophile element (LILE)-enriched, high field strength element (HFSE)-depleted compositions, the I-type suite resembles modern continental arc batholiths in composition and size but not primary mineralogy. Magmatic arcs produced between 2·75 and 1·85 Ga commonly have charnockitic components, possibly because slab-derived fluids interacted with mantle wedges at ambient temperatures higher by ∼100°C than at present, producing large volumes of water-deficient magma. Northwestern Laurentia, after cratonization at about 1.85 Ga, underwent a series of tectonic and magmatic events during the Proterozoic that were followed by separation of Laurentia from another landmass, probably Australia. The oldest magmatic event produced the Bonnet Plume River Intrusions (BPRI), which intruded the Wernecke Supergroup as short dikes and small stocks. The BPRI are hydrothermally altered tholeiitic diorites, gabbros, and subordinate anorthositic and syenitic rocks, with trace element signatures consistent with a rift origin. Depleted mantle model ages range from 2.29 to 2.57 Ga and ℇ[sub Nd] values range from +0.7 to –1.7. An increasing crustal component is apparent in rocks with more evolved compositions. Four U–Pb zircon ages (1705.9 ± 0.7, 1709.4 ± 1.4, 1711.1 ± 5.1, and 1713.6 ± 12.7 Ma) indicate a Paleoproterozoic age for the BPRI. These dates constrain the age of the Wernecke Supergroup to ca. 1710 Ma, making it the oldest supracrustal succession in western Laurentia, e.g., >240 Ma older than the Belt Supergroup of southeastern British Columbia and the northwestern United States. The Wernecke Supergroup was deposited in the first rift basin to open along the western margin of Laurentia, but was later inverted by the pre-1.6 Ga Racklan Orogeny, an event possibly influenced by transmission of compression from the Yavapai and Mazatzal orogenies in southern Laurentia. The Neoproterozoic southwestern United States – east Antarctica (SWEAT) reconstruction, which places Australia next to northwestern Laurentia, is supported by linkages between Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic geological features in northwestern Canada and Australia.Après une cratonisation vers 1,85 Ga, le nord-ouest du continent laurentien (Laurentia) a subi une série d'événements tectoniques et magmatiques au cours du Protérozoïque; ces événements ont été suivis par la séparation de Laurentia d'une autre masse continentale, probablement l'Australie. This paper provides a comprehensive synthesis of virtually all units and events of Early and Middle Proterozoic age in the Yukon, spanning ~1 Ga. Early and Middle Proterozoic time was dominated by a series of extensional-basin-forming events punctuated by orogenesis, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. Basinal deposits include the Wernecke Supergroup (>1.71 Ga), Pinguicula Group (~1.38 Ga), and Mackenzie Mountains Supergroup (1.00–0.78 Ga). Igneous rocks include the Bonnet Plume River Intrusions (1.71 Ga), Slab volcanics (≥1.6 Ga), Hart River sills and volcanics (1.38 Ga), and Bear River (Mackenzie) dykes (1.27 Ga). A voluminous hydrothermal event generated the widespread Wernecke breccias at 1.60 Ga. The Racklan orogeny deformed the Wernecke Supergroup prior to emplacement of the Wernecke Breccia. The Corn Creek orogeny deformed Mackenzie Mountains Supergroup and older rocks prior to deposition of the Windermere Supergroup (<0.78 Ga). Long intervals with scanty rock records extended for as much as 300 Ma and appear to represent periods of crustal stability and subaerial conditions. By the time of Windermere rifting (<0.78 Ga), the supracrust of northwestern Laurentia was a mature, largely denuded orogenic belt with a composite sedimentary–metamorphic–igneous character. New isotopic data include Nd depleted mantle model ages for the Wernecke Supergroup (2.28–2.69 Ga) and Wernecke Breccia (2.36–2.96 Ga), a U–Pb zircon age for a Hart River sill 1381.9+5.3-3.7 (Ma), detrital U–Pb zircon ages from the basal Pinguicula Group (1841–3078 Ma), detrital muscovite ages from the Mackenzie Mountains Supergroup (1037–2473 Ma), and muscovite 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages from the Wernecke Supergroup (788 ± 8 and 980 ± 4 Ma). The Fire Lake formation of the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the Finlayson Lake region, Yukon, Canada, consists primarily of Late Devonian (ca. 365–360 Ma) mafic metavolcanic rocks and smaller volumes of mafic and ultramafic subvolcanic metamorphosed intrusions. In this paper, field, geochemical, and Nd isotope attributes of these rocks are presented in an attempt to understand their tectonic setting, the magmatic processes involved in their formation, and their roles in Cordilleran crustal growth. The mafic rocks of the Fire Lake formation exhibit a wide diversity of geochemical signatures and are classified into seven chemically defined suites: (1) backarc-basin basalt, (2) enriched mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (E-MORB), (3) oceanic-island basalt (OIB), (4) Th-rich OIB, (5) boninite, (6) island-arc tholeiite, and (7) fight rare earth element (LREE)—enriched island-arc tholeiite. The diversity of geochemical signatures is interpreted to represent variable mixtures of asthenospheric (MORB-type) mantle, subarc mantle wedge, and lithospheric (OIB-type) mantle with or without elemental contributions from the subducted slab and/or continental crust. These suites of rocks are also associated with fine-grained basinal sedimentary facies, variations in metavolcanic and metasedimentary unit thickness, extensional synvolcanic faults, and apparent extensional-fault—controlled emplacement of mafic intrusive rocks and hydrothermal volcanic-hosted massive sulfide mineralization. The suites also exhibit a broad spatial distribution; those with “arc” signatures (Nb/Thmn. < 1; mn—normalized to primitive mantle values) are located primarily in the western parts of the formation, and suites with “nonarc” signatures (Sb/Thmn ≥ 1) are located primarily within the eastern parts of the formation. Collectively, these geologic and geochemical attributes are interpreted to stem from the transition from arc magmatism to the initiation of an extensional backarc basinal environment associated with an east-dipping subduction zone. The initiation of backarc-basin magmatism recorded in the Fire Lake formation was part of a much larger Late Devonian backarc basinal system forming along the western edge of the margin of North America. The Fire Lake formation is interpreted to represent (1) the commencement of Yukon-Tanana arc rifting and separation from the North American cratonic margin, and (2) the initiation of a marginal (backarc) basin (now the Slide Mountain terrane) inboard of the Yukon-Tanana arc system. This tectonic evolution likely occurred either as a result of slab rollback toward the west within the convergent margin responsible for Yukon-Tanana arc activity or as a result of the propagation of the Slide Mountain backarc-basin spreading ridges into the Yukon-Tanana arc system. This Yukon-Tanana arc rifting episode was also broadly coincident with rifting and hydrothermal activity within rocks of the North American craton. The geochemical and isotopic signatures of magmatic rocks in the Fire Lake formation have some features similar to intraoceanie arc rocks (e.g., boninites, island-arc tholeiites), and many have juvenile Nd isotope signatures (i.e., εNd(t) > 0; most have εNd(t) > +5), suggesting that the pericratonic terranes of the northern Cordillera have a significant juvenile component. If this is the case throughout the Yukon-Tanana terrane, then the pericratonic terranes may have contributed much more juvenile material to Cordilleran crustal growth in the Phanerozoic than has previously been considered. The 1.27 Ga Mackenzie dyke swarm, the largest on Earth, radiates from a point in the western Canadian Arctic and extends across much of the Canadian Shield. Possible western extensions of the swarm are largely obscured by younger sedimentary cover. Paleoproterozoic inliers in northern Yukon host the Bear River dykes (BRD), herein dated by U–Pb baddeleyite and zircon methods at 1268.5 ± 1.5 Ma and 1264.6 ± 1.2 Ma. The BRD share similar geochemical and Nd-isotopic characteristics with the Mackenzie dykes and the coeval Coppermine River basalts, and are regarded as products of the same plume. Hydrothermal activity at ∼1270 Ma in breccia of the Nor mineral occurrence, northwest of the BRD, was probably generated by BRD at depth. The BRD generally strike northwest, approximately 90° to the orientation predicted by the radiating dyke model. This difference may be explained by an anomalous local stress field at the time of BRD emplacement, or reorientation of BRD during subsequent events of Cordilleran deformation. Using the Nor mineral occurrence as the westernmost locale of Mackenzie dyking, and assuming a model of uniform dyke radiation, the arc of the Mackenzie swarm is at least 50° greater than previously recognized, bringing the total arc of dyke radiation to >150°. Jurassic sedimentary rocks of southern to central Quesnellia record the history of the Quesnellian magmatic arc and reflect increasing continental influence throughout the Jurassic history of the terrane. Standard petrographic point counts, geochemistry, Sm–Nd isotopes and detrital zircon geochronology, were employed to study provenance of rocks obtained from three areas of the terrane. Lower Jurassic sedimentary rocks, classified by inferred proximity to their source areas as proximal or proximal basin are derived from an arc source area. Sandstones of this age are immature. The rocks are geochemically and isotopically primitive. Detrital zircon populations, based on a limited number of analyses, have homogeneous Late Triassic or Early Jurassic ages, reflecting local derivation from Quesnellian arc sources. Middle Jurassic proximal and proximal basin sedimentary rocks show a trend toward more evolved mature sediments and evolved geochemical characteristics. The sandstones show a change to more mature grain components when compared with Lower Jurassic sedimentary rocks. There is a decrease in εNdT values of the sedimentary rocks and Proterozoic detrital zircon grains are present. This change is probably due to a combination of two factors: (1) pre-Middle Jurassic erosion of the Late Triassic – Early Jurassic arc of Quesnellia, making it a less dominant source, and (2) the increase in importance of the eastern parts of Quesnellia and the pericratonic terranes, such as Kootenay Terrane, both with characteristically more evolved isotopic values. Basin shale environments throughout the Jurassic show continental influence that is reflected in the evolved geochemistry and Sm–Nd isotopes of the sedimentary rocks. The data suggest southern Quesnellia received material from the North American continent throughout the Jurassic but that this continental influence was diluted by proximal arc sources in the rocks of proximal derivation. A concordant U–Pb zircon age of 569.6 ± 5.3 Ma from synrift volcanic rocks of the Hamill Group, southeastern Canadian Cordillera, provides the first direct U–Pb geochronologic constraint on timing of latest Neoproterozoic rifting along western Laurentia. This age confirms a previous estimate of 575 ± 25 Ma for timing of continental breakup, as derived from the analysis of tectonic subsidence in lower Paleozoic miogeoclinal strata of the North American Cordillera. It also corresponds to the timing of passive margin deposition in the "underlying" Windermere Supergroup of the northern Cordillera, as determined by chemostratigraphic correlations. These timing relationships imply a different breakup history for the northern, as compared to the southern, Cordillera. We propose a model that attempts to explain this paradox of Cordilleran geology. The earlier Neoproterozoic (Windermere-age) rifting event probably records breakup of a continental mass from northern Laurentia followed by development of a passive margin. Accordingly, the Windermere Supergroup of the southern Canadian Cordillera was deposited in an intracontinental rift. Abstract The Ushuaia pluton (UP) and the Ushuaia Peninsula Andesites (UPA) are intrusive units of a Late Cretaceous rear-arc in the Southernmost Andes. We report new LA-ICP-MS zircon ages from ∼71 to 75 Ma for the UP, and of ∼84 Ma for the UPA, which allow to differentiate these two magmatic events; consistent with their distinct petrography and geochemistry. The UP is a composite, incrementally assembled pluton in upper crustal levels. Successive injections of magma batches define two main sections, each in turn constructed by several smaller pulses: an early ultramafic-mafic section consists mainly of hornblende pyroxenite, hornblendite and gabbro/diorite with reverse concentric zonation, and a later intermediate section built up mainly by monzodiorite. Mingling and layering between mafic and intermediate facies along the contact point to simultaneous emplacement at the end of one main pulse and the beginning of the other. Mineralogy and geochemistry suggest the rock sequence in the UP is cogenetic. In part it resulted by in-situ magmatic processes that included crystal-melt fractionation during injection of magma mushes, mingling, local melt segregation and mixing with crustal partial melts. The country rock is affected by penetrative ductile deformation and regional metamorphism developed during mid-Cretaceous Andean main orogenic phase. It also shows an overimposed pluton-margin parallel foliation and a post-kinematic contact metamorphic aureole. On the other hand, the UP has a concentric igneous foliation parallel to pluton margins interpreted as a primary magmatic feature. The above evidences, along with absence of subsolidus fabrics and metamorphism, indicate the pluton post-date peak regional metamorphism and ductile structures in the country rock. The new zircon ages constrain the top age of early Andean deformation, as well as the magmatic gap registered for the end of the Cretaceous, and confirm an emplacement during a recorded compressive regime that transmitted shortening to the foreland. The Tapajós Domain in the Amazonian Craton comprises hundreds of gold occurrences mainly hosted by Paleoproterozoic granitic rocks, whose geotectonic evolution and deformation style are poorly understood. The Tocantinzinho granite hosts a large amount of gold, forming the largest gold deposit known in the Tapajós Domain. The Tocantinzinho area is formed by plutonic rocks cut by subvolcanic rocks shallowly emplaced and constrained by NW-SE strike-slip faults, probably in a transtensive site. The magmatism started with the emplacement of huge granodiorite that presently formed the basement country rocks (2007–1997Ma), it was followed by the Tocantinzinho granite magmatism (1989–1979 Ma), and the coeval to late andesite emplacement. Petrological and textural evidence suggest the complex and synchronous occurrence of tectonics and few magmatic events expressed by the emplacement of successive granite, aplite, pegmatite, andesite, and dacite. The magmatic event finished with the cooling of this set of rocks below c . 320 °C, at c . 1950 Ma. The cooling rates vary from c . 3.6–14.7°C/Ma, with an average of 7.5°C/Ma, indicating no important vertical exhumations. The elongated geometry of the Tocantinzinho granite and related rocks, features of solid-state deformation within granites and syntectonic deformation of some andesite dikes imply the existence of wrench type tectonic control. The I-type signature of these rocks, their high-K calc-alkaline and metaluminous to peraluminous affinities combined with the tectonic style indicate a post-collisional tectonic setting. Based on geochemical and structural constrains, the rocks from the Tocantinzinho area are interpreted as a part of the Creporizão Suite and probably represent the first expressions of this syn-to late-tectonic magmatism in the region. Mineral de Talca is a rare occurrence of Mesozoic, gold-bearing quartz vein mineralisation situated within the Coastal Range of northern Chile. Quartz veins controlled by NNW-SSE-trending faults are hosted by Devonian-Carboniferous metasediments of greenschist facies and younger, undeformed granitoid and gabbro intrusions. The principal structural control in the area is the easterly dipping, NNW-SSE-trending El Teniente Fault, which most likely developed as an extensional normal fault in the Triassic but was later reactivated as a strike-slip fault during subsequent compression. A dilational zone in the El Teniente Fault appears to have focussed fluid flow, and an array of NW-SE-trending veins is present as splays off the El Teniente Fault. Mineralised quartz veins typically up to a metre thick occur in three main orientations: (1) parallel to and within NNW-SSE-trending, E-dipping faults throughout the area; (2) along NW-SE-trending, NE-dipping structures which may also host andesite dykes; and (3) rarer E-W-trending, subvertical veins. All mineralised quartz veins show evidence of multiple fluid events with anastomosing and crosscutting veins and veinlets, some of which contain up to 3.5 vol.% base metal sulphides. Mineralogically, Au is present in three textural occurrences, identified by 3D CT scanning: (1) with arsenopyrite and pyrite in altered wall rock and along the margins of some of the veins; (2) with Cu-Pb-Zn sulphides within quartz veins; and (3) as nuggets and clusters of native Au within quartz. Fluid inclusion work indicates the presence of CO-CH-bearing fluids with homogenisation temperatures of ∼350 °C and aqueous fluids with low-moderate salinities (0.4-15.5 wt% NaCl eq.) with homogenisation temperatures in the range of 161-321 °C. The presence of Au with arsenopyrite and pyrite in structurally controlled quartz veins and in greenschist facies rocks with evidence of CO-bearing fluids is consistent with an orogenic style classification for the mineralisation. However, the significant amounts of base metals and the moderate salinity of some of the fluids and the proximity to felsic granitoid intrusions have raised the possibility of an intrusion-related origin for the mineralisation. Vein sulphides display S isotope signatures (δS +2.1 to +4.3 ‰) that are intermediate between the host rock metasediments (δS +5.3 to +7.5 ‰) and the local granitoids (δS +1.3 to +1.4 ‰), indicating a distinct crustal source of some of the S in the veins and possibly a mixed magmatic-crustal S source. The local granite and granodiorite give U-Pb zircon ages of 219.6 ± 1 and 221.3 ± 2.8 Ma, respectively. Lead isotopic compositions of galena in the veins are consistent, suggesting derivation from a homogeneous source. Differences, however, between the isotopic signatures of the veins and igneous feldspars from nearby intrusions imply that these bodies were not the source of the metals though an igneous source from depth cannot be discounted. The Triassic age of the granitoids is consistent with emplacement during regional crustal extension, with the El Teniente Fault formed as an easterly dipping normal fault. The change to a compressional regime in the mid-Jurassic caused reactivation of the El Teniente Fault as a strike-slip fault and provided a structural setting suitable for orogenic style mineralisation. The intrusions may, however, have provided a structural competency contrast that focused the mineralising fluids in a dilational jog along the El Teniente Fault to form WNW-trending veins. As such, the mineralisation is classified as orogenic style, and the identification of the key mineralogical, isotopic and structural features has implications for exploration and the development of similar deposits along the Coastal Range. The Mesozoic magmatic history of the North American margin records the evolution from a more segmented assemblage of parautochthonous and allochthonous terranes to the more cohesive northern Cordilleran orogenic belt. We characterize the setting of magmatism, tectonism, and epigenetic mineralization in the western Fortymile mining district, east-central Alaska, where parautochthonous and allochthonous Paleozoic tectonic assemblages are juxtaposed, using sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb zircon geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, and feldspar Pb isotopes of Mesozoic intrusions and spatially associated mineral prospects. New SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages and published U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar ages indicate four episodes of plutonism in the western Fortymile district: Late Triassic (216-208 Ma), Early Jurassic (199-181 Ma), mid-Cretaceous (112-94 Ma), and Late Cretaceous (70-66 Ma). All age groups have calc-alkalic arc compositions that became more evolved through time. Pb isotope compositions of feldspars from Late Triassic, Early Jurassic, and Late Cretaceous igneous rocks similarly became more radiogenic with time and are consistent with the magmas being mantle derived but extensively contaminated by upper crustal components with evolving Pb isotopic compositions. Feldspar Pb isotopes from mid-Cretaceous rocks have isotopic ratios that indicate magma derivation from upper crustal sources, probably thickened mid-Paleozoic basement. The origin of the mantle component in Late Cretaceous granitoids suggested by Pb isotopic ratios is uncertain, but we propose that it reflects asthenospheric upwelling following slab breakoff and sinking of an inactive inner subduction zone that delivered the previously accreted Wrangellia composite terrane to the North American continental margin, after the outer Farallon subduction zone was established. Epigenetic Pb-Zn-Ag ± Cu prospects in the western Fortymile district are spatially associated with splays of the northeast-trending Kechumstuk sinistral- normal fault zone and with ca. 68-66 Ma felsic intrusions and dikes. The similarity between Pb isotope compositions of feldspars from the Late Cretaceous igneous bodies and sulfides from the epithermal prospects suggests a Late Cretaceous age for most of the mineralization. Fluid flow along the faults undoubtedly played a major role in mineralization. We interpret displacement on the northeast-trending faults to be a far-field effect of dextral translation along Late Cretaceous plate-scale boundaries and faults that were roughly parallel to the subsequently developed Denali and Tintina fault systems, which currently bound the region. Geochemistry and Sm-Nd and U-Pb (magmatic zircon) isotope data from a postcollisional batholith that crosscuts the allochthonous South Portuguese Zone (SPZ) of southern Iberia suggest that the basement is compositionally more juvenile than the exposed upper crust. The SPZ is an allochthonous terrane of the late Paleozoic Variscan orogen. The oldest exposed units in the SPZ are Late Devonian continental clastics, and as a result, the origins of the SPZ are unknown. Multifaceted inherited zircon cores from a granitoid batholith (Sierra Norte Batholith, SNB) reveal Neoproterozoic (ca. 561-647 Ma) and Mesoproterozoic ages (ca. 1075 - ca. 1116 Ma). Granitoid samples are characterized by εNd values ranging from +1.4 to -9.6 and model ages ca. 0.76-1.8 Ga. Conversely, the exposed Late Devonian clastics of the SPZ are characterized by more negative εNd values (-7.5 to -10.4). Taken together, U-Pb and Sm-Nd data indicate the lower crust that melted to yield the SNB was ( i) Neoproterozoic (ca. 560-650 Ma) to Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.0-1.2 Ga) in age, ( ii) was not compositionally similar to the overlying Devono-Carboniferous continental detritus but was instead more juvenile, with model ages between ca. 0.9-1.2 Ga. This unusual relationship is similar to the relationship between the relatively juvenile basement and ancient upper crust documented in the exposed portion of the Meguma terrane in the northern Appalachians, which paleogeographic reconstructions show was immediately outboard of southern Iberia in the Late Devonian. Abstract: Xenoliths collected from Prindle volcano, Alaska (Lat. 63.72°N; Long. 141.82°W) provide a unique opportunity to examine the lower crust of the northern Canadian Cordillera. The cone''s pyroclastic deposits contain crustal and mantle-derived xenoliths. The crustal xenoliths include granulite facies metamorphic rocks and charnockites, comprising orthopyroxene (opx)–plagioclase (pl)–quartz (qtz)±mesoperthite (msp) and clinopyroxene (cpx). Opx–cpx geothermometry yields equilibrium temperatures (T) from 770 to 1015 °C at 10 kbar. Pl–cpx–qtz geobarometry yields pressures (P) of ∼6.6–8.0 kbar. Integrated mesoperthite compositions suggest minimum temperatures of 1020–1140 °C at 10 kbar using solvus geothermometry. The absence of garnet in these rocks indicates a range of maximum pressure of 5–11.3 kbar, and calculated solidi constrain upper temperature limits. We conclude that the granulite facies assemblages represent relatively dry metamorphism at pressures indicative of crustal thicknesses similar to present day (∼36 km). Zircon separates from a single crustal xenolith yield mainly Early Tertiary (48–63 Ma) U–Pb ages which are considerably younger than the cooling ages of the high-pressure amphibolites exposed at the surface. The distribution of zircon ages is interpreted as indicating zircon growth coincident with at least two different thermal events as expressed at surface: (i) the eruption of the Late Cretaceous Carmacks Group volcanic rocks in western Yukon and adjacent parts of Alaska, and (ii) emplacement of strongly bimodal high level intrusions across much of western Yukon and eastern Alaska possibly in an extensional tectonic regime. The distributions of zircon growth ages and the preservation of higher-than-present-day (>25±3 °C km−1) geothermal gradients in the granulite facies rocks demonstrate the use of crustal xenoliths for recovering records of past, lithospheric-scale thermal–tectonic events. In central Yukon, the pericratonic Yukon–Tanana terrane (YT) is juxtaposed with the Cassiar terrane (CT, parautochthonous North America) along the Tummel fault zone (TFZ), a 3–4 km wide, northwest-trending belt comprising imbricate fault slices of Slide Mountain terrane (SM, greenstone, chert, serpentinite) and synorogenic clastic rocks. Northeast of the TFZ, the CT comprises Paleozoic metapelitic rocks, marble, and amphibolite of continental margin affinity. To the southwest, the YT consists of a pre-Late Devonian metasedimentary complex overlain and intruded by Mississippian clastic, volcanic, and plutonic successions of continental arc affinity. In the TFZ, Middle to Late Permian ocean-floor basalt of the SM shows evidence of crustal contamination, suggesting deposition at the edge of a marginal ocean basin. Deformation features in the TFZ include early ductile fabrics overprinted by younger brittle structures. Triassic synorogenic clastic rocks in the TFZ, and at the base of a klippen above the YT, suggest that terrane imbrication began shortly after the Early Triassic. 40Ar/39Ar mica ages from the region suggest cooling of the YT, SM, and part of CT below 300 °C by Early Jurassic time. Pervasive brittle structures in the Ragged Lake klippe, which roots into the TFZ, indicate brittle thrusting of the SM over the CT in post-Triassic time. Early Cretaceous plutons intrude the CT (Glenlyon Batholith) and the TFZ (leucogabbro) and impose a contact aureole that extends westward into the YT. Steep brittle structures that deformed the TFZ also affect, in part, the Glenlyon Batholith but do not significantly offset its contact aureole. Knowledge of the time-scales of emplacement and thermal history during assembly of composite felsic plutons in the shallow crust are critical to deciphering the processes of crustal growth and magma chamber development. Detailed petrological and chemical study of the mid-Cretaceous, composite Emerald Lake pluton, from the northern Canadian Cordillera, Yukon Territory, coupled with U–Pb and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, indicates that this pluton was intruded as a series of magmatic pulses. Intrusion of these pulses produced a strong petrological zonation from augite syenite, hornblende quartz syenite and monzonite, to biotite granite. Our data further indicate that multiple phases were emplaced and cooled to below the mineral closure temperatures over a time-scale on the order of the resolution of the 40Ar/39Ar technique (∼1 Myr), and that emplacement occurred at 94.3 Ma. Simple thermal modelling and heat conduction calculations were used to further constrain the temporal relationships within the intrusion. These calculations are consistent with the geochronology and show that emplacement and cooling were complete in less than 100 kyr and probably 70±5 kyr. These results demonstrate that production, transport and emplacement of the different phases of the Emerald Lake pluton occurred essentially simultaneously, and that these processes must also have been closely related in time and space. By analogy, these results provide insights into the assembly and petrogenesis of other complex intrusions and ultimately lead to an understanding of the processes involved in crustal development.
