1. Stepping into the Sea of Instability: The New Sub-us Superheavy Nucleus 252Rf

Abstract

We report the discovery of the new isotope $^{252}$Rf. With its extremely short half-life of $60^{+90}_{-30}$~ns, it expands the range of half-lives of the known superheavy nuclei by about two orders of magnitude. This nucleus was synthesized in its high-$K$ isomeric state, for which we measured a half-life of $13^{+4}_{-3}$~$\mu$s. Our results confirm a smooth onset of decreasing ground-state spontaneous fission half-lives in the neutron-deficient Rf isotopes towards the isotopic border of $10^{-14}$~s, which is the time needed to form an atomic shell. Our findings set a new benchmark for further exploration of phenomena associated with high-$K$ states and inverted fission-stability in the heaviest nuclei.

Abstract

Polonium isotopes having two protons above the shell closure at $Z=82$ show a wide variety of low-lying high-spin isomeric states across the whole chain. The structure of neutron-deficient isotopes up to $^{210}$Po ($N=126$) is well established as they are easily produced through various methods. However, there is not much information available for the neutron-rich counterparts for which only selective techniques can be used for their production. We report on the first fast-timing measurements of yrast states up to the 8$^+$ level in $^{214,216,218}$Po isotopes produced in the $\beta^-$ decay of $^{214,216,218}$Bi at ISOLDE, CERN. In particular, our new half-life value of 607(14) ps for the 8$_1^+$ state in $^{214}$Po is nearly 20 times shorter than the one available in literature and comparable with the newly measured half-lives of 409(16) and 628(25) ps for the corresponding 8$_1^+$ states in $^{216,218}$Po, respectively. The measured $B(E2;8_1^+ \to 6_1^+)$ transition probability values follow an increasing trend relative to isotope mass, reaching a maximum for $^{216}$Po. The increase contradicts the previous claims of isomerism for the $8^+$ yrast states in neutron-rich $^{214}$Po and beyond. Together with the other measured yrast transitions, the $B(E2)$ values provide a crucial test of the different theoretical approaches describing the underlying configurations of the yrast band. The new experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations using the KHPE and H208 effective interactions and their pairing modified versions, showing an increase in configuration mixing when moving towards the heavier isotopes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures (main manuscript), 2 pages (supplemental material)

Abstract

Background: The mercury isotopes around $N=104$ are a well-known example of nuclei exhibiting shape coexistence. Mixing of configurations can be studied by measuring the monopole strength $\rho^2(E0)$, however, currently the experimental information is scarce and lacks precision, especially for the $I^\pi \rightarrow I^\pi$ ($I \neq 0$) transitions. Purpose: The goals of this study were to increase the precision of the known branching ratios and internal conversion coefficients, to increase the amount of available information regarding excited states in $^{182,184,186}$Hg and to interpret the results in the framework of shape coexistence using different models. Method: The low-energy structures in $^{182,184,186}$Hg were populated in the $\beta$ decay of $^{182,184,186}$Tl, produced at ISOLDE and purified by laser ionization and mass separation. The $\gamma$-ray and internal conversion electron events were detected by five germanium clover detectors and a segmented silicon detector, respectively, and correlated in time to build decay schemes. Results: In total, 193, 178 and 156 transitions, including 144, 140 and 108 observed for the first time in a $\beta$-decay experiment, were assigned to $^{182,184,186}$Hg, respectively. Internal conversion coefficients were determined for 23 transitions, out of which 12 had an $E0$ component. Extracted branching ratios allowed the sign of the interference term in $^{182}$Hg as well as $\rho^2(E0;0^+_2\rightarrow 0^+_1)$ and $B(E2;0^+_2\rightarrow 2^+_1)$ in $^{184}$Hg to be determined. By means of electron-electron coincidences, the $0^+_3$ state was identified in $^{184}$Hg. The experimental results were qualitatively reproduced by five theoretical approaches, the IBM with configuration mixing with two different parametrizations, the General Bohr Hamiltonian, the BMF model and the SCCM model. Abstract

The new neutron-deficient isotope $^{249}$No was synthesized for the first time in the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{204}$Pb($^{48}$Ca,3n)$^{249}$No. After separation, using the kinematic separator SHELS, the new isotope was identified with the GABRIELA detection system through genetic correlations with the known daughter and granddaughter nuclei $^{245}$Fm and $^{241}$Cf. The alpha-decay activity of $^{249}$No has an energy of 9129(22)$~$keV and half-life 38.3(2.8) ms. An upper limit of 0.2\% was measured for the fission branch of $^{249}$No. Based on the present data and recent information on the decay properties of $^{253}$Rf and aided by Geant4 simulations, the ground state of $^{249}$No is assigned the 5/2$^+$[622] neutron configuration and a partial decay scheme from $^{253}$Rf to $^{245}$Fm could be established. The production cross-section was found to be $\sigma$(3n)=0.47(4) nb at a mid-target beam energy of 225.4 MeV, which corresponds to the maximum of the calculated excitation function. Correlations of the $^{249}$No alpha activity with subsequent alpha decays of energy 7728(20) keV and half-life $1.2_{-0.4}^{+1.0}$ min provided a firm measurement of the electron-capture or $\beta^{+}$ branch of $^{245}$Fm to $^{245}$Es. The excitation function for the 1n, 2n and 3n evaporation channels was measured. In the case of the 2n-evaporation channel $^{250}$No, a strong variation of the ground state and isomeric state populations as a function of bombarding energy could be evidenced.

Abstract

The decay properties of the ground state and excited states of $^{257}$Rf have been investigated with the detector array GABRIELA at the FLNR, Dubna. The electromagnetic decay of a new excited state in $^{253}$No has been observed. The state lies 750 keV above the ground state and is favourably populated in the alpha decay of the low-lying spin isomer of $^{257}$Rf. It decays to the 9/2$^-$ ground state by an M1 transition and is assigned the 11/2$^-$[725] Nilsson configuration. The presence of this state suggests a possible reinterpretation of the decay of the high-K isomer in $^{253}$No., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Decay spectroscopy of the long-lived states in $^{186}$Tl has been performed at the ISOLDE Decay Station at ISOLDE, CERN. The $\alpha$ decay from the low-spin $(2^-)$ state in $^{186}$Tl was observed for the first time and a half-life of $3.4^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ s was determined. Based on the $\alpha$-decay energy, the relative positions of the long-lived states were fixed, with the $(2^-)$ state as the ground state, the $7^{(+)}$ state at 77(56)~keV and the $10^{(-)}$ state at 451(56) keV. The level scheme of the internal decay of the $^{186}$Tl($10^{(-)}$) state ($T_{1/2} = 3.40(9)$ s), which was known to decay solely through emission of 374 keV $\gamma$-ray transition, was extended and a lower-limit for the $\beta$-decay branching $b_\beta > 5.9(3)\%$ was determined. The extracted retardation factors for the $\gamma$ decay of the $10^{(-)}$ state were compared to the available data in neighboring odd-odd thallium isotopes indicating the importance of the $\pi d_{3/2}$ shell in the isomeric decay and significant structure differences between $^{184}$Tl and $^{186}$Tl., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Chemical reactivity of the superheavy elements nihonium (Nh, element 113) and moscovium (Mc, element 115) has been studied by the gas-solid chromatography method using a new combined chromatography and detection setup. The Mc isotope 288 Mc, was produced in the nuclear fusion reaction of 48Ca ions with 243Am targets at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum Darmstadt, Germany. After isolating 288Mc ions in the gas-filled separator TASCA, adsorption of 288Mc and its decay product 284Nh on silicon oxide and gold surfaces was investigated. As a result of this work, the values of the adsorption enthalpy of Nh and Mc on the silicon oxide surface were determined for the first time,(Mc) = 54+51 kJ/mol and -AHSdO2 (Nh) = 58+8 kJ/mol (68% c.i.). The obtained ^Hads values are in good agreement with results of advanced relativistic calculations. Both elements, Nh and Mc, were shown to interact more weakly with the silicon oxide surface than their lighter homologues Tl and Bi, respectively. However, Nh and Mc turned out to be more reactive than the neighbouring closed-shell and quasi-closed-shell elements copernicium (Cn, element 112) and flerovium (Fl, element 114), respectively. The established trend is explained by the influence of strong relativistic effects on the valence atomic orbitals of these elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Knowledge of the ac loss generated in a superconducting cable during variation of magnetic field is essential when considering its use in pulsed magnets. In round high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables made from coated conductor (CC) tapes, the hysteresis loss is proportional to the tape width. Then an effective measure for reducing the loss is the division of the superconducting layer into parallel filaments. We investigated the ac loss in short models of round cables, containing in different arrangements two layers of 10 standard helically laid tapes. At magnetic field amplitudes surpassing 0.1 T the loss did not depend on the cable architecture, in agreement with simple analytical prediction. Substantial reduction of magnetization loss was obtained in the cable models from novel coated conductor (CC) tapes with a low-cost filamentized REBCO layer produced in an industrial process utilizing a special 3D patterned metal substrate. Further research should address the improvement of critical current and optimization of metallic layers, allowing a migration of current between filaments without substantial increase of coupling loss.

20. Impact of Anticlastic Deformation on REBCO Tapes Wound in Multilayer Round Cable

Abstract

The aim of this work was to study the effect of anticlastic deformation on the coated conductor (CC) tape wound in multilayer round cable. As the edges of the CC tapes tend to lift after bending (effect of anticlastic deformation), in multilayer round cable with tapes in opposite directions, this causes local contact stress between the layers and consequently crossover kinking of the outer tape. The impact of tape kinking was investigated as a comparison between critical currents (Ic) measured on the tapes wound in a single-layer (not affected by kinking) and outer tapes wound in double-layer configuration (affected by crossover kinking) at the same winding parameters. The investigation was performed on the tapes wound by using tensioning force of 3 N, lay angle of 45° and tube diameters of 8 mm and 6 mm. The results showed that Ic of the tape affected by kinking is approx. 19% lower at tube diameter of 6 mm and 15% lower at tube diameter of 8 mm compared to tape not affected by kinking. The SEM analysis showed delamination of the REBCO layer in the place of contact stress that was obviously responsible for Ic degradation of the outer tapes in double-layer configuration.

A preferred Iπ=(8-) assignment was suggested for this state based on the β-decay feeding pattern to levels in Po214 and shell-model calculations. The half-life of the Iπ=(8-) state was deduced to be T1/2=9.39(10) min. The deexcitation of the levels populated in Po214 by the β decay of this state was investigated via γ-γ coincidences and a number of new levels and transitions was identified. Shell-model calculations for excited states in Bi214 and Po214 were performed using two different effective interactions: the H208 and the modified Kuo-Herling particle interaction. 27. Longitudinal Critical Current Profiles in Coated Conductors Examined by Transport and Magnetization Measurements

Abstract

Critical current (Ic) variations along the coated conductor (CC) have a significant impact on the conductor stability and quench behavior. In the direct current (DC) transport case, localized Ic minimum can lead to the formation of a region with a higher electric field. Joule heating in such a region can disable the operational functionality of the device. Then a sufficiently detailed knowledge of the longitudinal profile of the conductor Ic is in the first place necessary in assessing the conductor eligibility for a specific application. In the second place, it serves to design appropriate electro-thermal stabilization, securing an effective operation, and reducing the probability of conductor degradation during the quench. We report on the experimental investigation of longitudinal Ic homogeneity of CC observed by means of transport and magnetization measurements. Basic information is the CC data from the producer on Ic profiles obtained with ∼1-milimeter spatial resolution by TapestarTM XL. We compare it with the result obtained by multi-channel DC transport measurement with 3-millimeter spatial resolution between neighboring contacts on a multiprobe device. Then the whole sample is characterized by a complex AC susceptibility experiment. We analyze possible causes of observed discrepancies between respective methods and discuss the relevance of various techniques for the determination of longitudinal Ic profiles in commercial CC.

28. The Critical Current of REBCO Coated Conductors Subjected to a Mechanical Loading at Varying Angles

Abstract

High-temperature superconducting REBCO coated conductors and cables made from them are required in the building of fusion reactors, high-field magnets, and other high-current and high magnetic field devices. In the construction phase, the coated conductors undergo mechanical loading throughout the coated conductor production, cable manufacturing and when the resulting device is put in operation. Therefore, a simple method for investigating the loss of critical current after bending at different diameters and angles would be helpful. Here, we present a setup designed with simplicity in mind, allowing easy replication of testing conditions. As an example, the behaviour of two conductors has been characterized. We found differences in critical bending diameter when CC tapes were bent at 30 degrees angle and 45 degrees angle. The measurements were complemented by numerical and analytical calculations. The analytical calculations are an idealized 2D model serving as a first approach method for a fast prediction of loading severity. 3D numerical modelling of the measurement setup was performed in finite element software ANSYS, allowing us in-depth investigation of the strain/stress distribution in the multilayer structure of REBCO coated conductors. Scanning electron microscope study of the surface of the superconducting layer on one of the samples helped explain the measurement results.

Abstract

β-delayed fission (βDF) decay of a low-spin (ls) and a high-spin (hs) isomer in Bi188 was studied at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. Isomer-selective laser ionization and time gating were employed to investigate each isomer separately and their βDF partial half-lives were determined: T1/2p,βDF(188Bihs)=5.6(8)×103 s and T1/2p,βDF(188Bils)=1.7(6)×103 s. This work is the first βDF study of two states in one isotope and allows the spin dependence of low-energy fission to be explored. The fission fragment mass distribution of a daughter nuclide Pb188, following the β decay of the high-spin isomer, was deduced and indicates a mixture of symmetric and asymmetric fission modes. Experimental results were compared with self-consistent mean-field calculations based on the finite-range Gogny D1M interaction. To reproduce the measured T1/2p,βDF(188Bihs), the calculated fission barrier of Pb188 had to be reduced by ≈30%. After this reduction, the measured T1/2p,βDF(188Bils) was in agreement with calculations for a few possible configurations for Bils188. Theoretical βDF probabilities for these configurations were found to be lower by a factor of 4-9 than the βDF probability of Bihs188. The fission fragment mass distribution of Pb188 was compared to the scission-point model SPY and the calculations based on the finite-range liquid-drop model. Abstract

A new beta-decaying state in Bi-214 has been identified at the ISOLDE Decay Station at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. A preferred I-pi = (8(-)) assignment was suggested for this state based on the beta-decay feeding pattern to levels in Po-214 and shell-model calculations. The half-life of the I-pi = (8) state was deduced to be T-1/2 = 9.39(10) min. The deexcitation of the levels populated in Po-214 by the beta decay of this state was investigated via gamma-gamma coincidences and a number of new levels and transitions was identified. Shell-model calculations for excited states in Bi-214 and Po-214 were performed using two different effective interactions: the H208 and the modified Kuo-Herling particle interaction. Both calculations agree on the interpretation of the new beta-decaying state as an I-pi = 8 - isomer and allow for tentative assignment of shell-model states to several high-spin states in Po-214.

Abstract

The changes in the mean-square charge radius (relative to Bi209), magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole moments of Bi187,188,189,191 were measured using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique at ISOLDE (CERN). A large staggering in radii was found in Bi187,188,189g, manifested by a sharp radius increase for the ground state of Bi188 relative to the neighboring Bi187,189g. A large isomer shift was also observed for Bi188m. Both effects happen at the same neutron number, N=105, where the shape staggering and a similar isomer shift were observed in the mercury isotopes. Abstract

Decay spectroscopy of the long-lived states in 186Tl has been performed at the ISOLDE Decay Station at ISOLDE, CERN. The α decay from the low-spin (2−) state in 186Tl was observed for the first time and a half-life of 3.4+0.5−0.4 s was determined. Based on the α-decay energy, the relative positions of the long-lived states were fixed, with the (2−) state as the ground state, the 7(+) state at 77(56) keV, and the 10(−) state at 451(56) keV. The level scheme of the internal decay of the 186Tl(10(−)) state [T1/2=3.40(9) s], which was known to decay solely through emission of 374-keV γ-ray transition, was extended and a lower limit for the β-decay branching bβ>5.9(3)% was determined. The extracted retardation factors for the γ decay of the 10(−) state were compared to the available data in neighboring odd-odd thallium isotopes indicating the importance of the πd3/2 shell in the isomeric decay and significant structure differences between 184Tl and 186Tl. peerReviewed

Abstract

International audience; Spontaneous fission properties of the isotopes Rf255, Rf256, and Rf258 produced in the reactions Ti50+Pb207, Ti50+Pb208, and Ti50+Bi209 were studied. The method of time and position correlations was used to identify spontaneous fission events. The correction to the energy deficit in measured total kinetic energy (TKE) determined on the basis of a study of No252 was applied to evaluate the TKE¯ of investigated rutherfordium isotopes. A signature which we assigned tentatively to bimodal fission was observed in TKE distributions of Rf255 and Rf256. Two new high-K isomeric states in Rf255 were identified by ER-CE-(CE)-α/SF correlation search, with half-lives of 38−7+12 and 15−4+6 μs at excitation energies 1150–1450 and 900–1200 keV, respectively. Including those metastable states a tentative partial level scheme was proposed.

Abstract

The first accurate measurements of the α-decay branching ratio and half-life of the Iπ=1/2+ ground state in $^{181}$Tl have been made, along with the first determination of the magnetic moments and I=1/2 spin assignments of the ground states in $^{177,179}$Au. The results are discussed within the complementary systematics of the reduced α-decay widths and nuclear g factors of low-lying, Iπ=1/2+ states in the neutron-deficient lead region. The findings shed light on the unexpected hindrance of the 1/2+→1/2+, $^{181}$Tl→g177Au$^{g}$ α decay, which is explained by a mixing of π3s1/2 and π2d3/2 configurations in $^{177}$Au$^{g}$, whilst $^{181}$Tl$^{g}$ remains a near-pure π3s1/2. This conclusion is inferred from the g factor of $^{177}$Au$^{g}$ which has an intermediate value between those of π3s1/2 and π2d3/2 states. A similar mixed configuration is proposed for the Iπ=1/2+ ground state of $^{179}$Au. This mixing may provide evidence for triaxial shapes in the ground states in these nuclei.

Abstract

In the reaction of complete fusion of 48Ca-ions with a 204Pb target, a new α line, related to the decay of a new, previously unknown isotope (249No), has been detected in an experiment carried out at the SHELS separator. The α decay energy (Eα = 9129 keV) and the half-life (T1/2 = 38.1 ± 2.5 ms) are measured using the GABRIELA detector array. The SF branching ratio was estimated (bSF ≤ 0.2%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
