Rotenone is a pesticide that causes complex I inhibition and is widely known to induce motor disability and experimental Parkinson's disease (PD) in rodents. Evidence suggests a crucial role for sirtuin/nuclear factor-kappaB/nod-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing 3 (SIRT1/NFκB/NLRP3) signaling and inflammation in PD and rotenone neurotoxicity. Hesperetin (C16H14O6) is a citrus flavonoid with documented anti-inflammatory activity. We investigated the value of hesperetin in delaying rotenone-induced PD in mice and the possible modulation of inflammatory burden. PD was induced in mice via rotenone injections. Groups were assigned as a vehicle, PD, or PD + hesperetin (50 or 100 mg/kg) and compared for the motor function, protein level (by ELISA), and gene expression (by real-time PCR) of the target proteins, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry for tyrosine hydroxylase enzyme. Hesperetin (50 or 100 mg/kg) alleviated the motor disability and the striatal dopamine level and decreased the expression of NLRP3 and NF-κB but increased SIRT1 expression (p < 0.05). Further, it enhanced the neural viability and significantly decreased neural degeneration in the substantia nigra, hippocampus, and cerebral cortex (p < 0.05). Taken together, we propose that hesperetin mediates its neuroprotective function via alleviating modulation of the SIRT1/NFκB/NLRP3 pathway. Therefore, hesperetin might delay the PD progression. The aim of this study was to determine the potential cognitive impairment associated with motor disability in a group of children attending regular schools and to analyze whether there were different cognitive profiles according to the type of motor disability they presented. The study had 87 participants, 31 healthy and 56 with three types of motor disability: Neuromuscular Diseases (NMD Group), Cerebral Palsy-Hemiparesis (CP- HPx Group) and Cerebral Palsy-Diplegia (CP-DP). Ages ranged from 6 to 18 years and they had medium and medium-high socioeconomic and cultural levels. All participants attended regular state-funded and independent schools in an inclusive modality. The neuropsychological assessment included the following cognitive domains: processing speed, working memory, verbal and visual episodic memory, language, visuo-perception and constructive praxis and executive functioning. A second analysis was performed with the groups with CP: one based on the severity of gross motor impairment (GMFCS-E&R scale) and the other based on the levels of manual dexterity (MACS scale). ANCOVAs were performed controlling for age and processing speed in the three analyses. The group with CP-HPx was shown to be the most cognitively impaired of the three groups, with significant deficits in visuo-perception, verbal working memory, and visuo-spatial memory. Subjects with greater gross motor dysfunction (GMFCS-E&R) did not show the greatest cognitive impairment, while those with worse manual dexterity (MACS) exhibited greater cognitive impairment. Children and adolescents with motor disabilities, a priori cognitively normal, present different levels of cognitive impairment. Aim: To assess the impact of late-onset neonatal sepsis (LONS) on the cognitive and motor development of five-year-old children who were born very preterm (VPT). Methods: This study included 327 VPT children from the Portuguese EPICE/SHIPS cohort who attended the neurodevelopment assessment. Neuropsychological tests such as WPPSI-R, MABC-2 and NEPSY-II (language domain) were used to assess the children's cognitive and motor development. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the socio-demographic, clinical and neurodevelopment outcomes of VPT children with and without LONS. Regression analysis adjusted for confounding variables was performed when applicable. Results: Underperformance in intelligence quotient and language development was similar regardless of a neonatal diagnosis of LONS. In contrast, VPT children with LONS had a higher risk of movement difficulties than those without LONS (p = 0.02). However, the association was lost after adjusting for confounders (β = -0.25; p > 0.05). Conclusion: LONS per se was not associated with the risk for poor long-term cognitive or motor outcomes in VPT children. Social-demographic and clinical characteristics assessed during the neonatal period and at the time of neurodevelopment assessment were similar between groups suggesting that social-related factors such as parents' educational level could have mitigated the LONS impact. Background: Social participation is a fundamental right; however, restrictions often arise due to environmental barriers, both physical and social. The ‘Handicap Innovation Territoire’ (HIT) project aims to enhance social participation for individuals with disabilities living in Brittany, France. To gain insight into the desired areas of intervention and evaluate the HIT project, an initial experiment was conducted to assess the level of social participation and perceived environmental quality among people with disabilities. Methods: A cross-sectional investigation was performed, utilizing the Assessment of Life Habits (LIFE-H) and Measure of the Quality of the Environment (MQE). Results: Twenty-five individuals with disabilities, with an average age of 46.0 ± 23.6 years, were recruited. The results indicated an overall high level of social participation, while work, education, and leisure showed participation restrictions. The MQE scores revealed variations in the environmental perception across disability groups concerning work environment (p = 0.035), stores and services (p = 0.014), health care services (p = 0.006), education (p = 0.043), access to radio and television (p = 0.002), road accessibility (p = 0.003), and time allowed for tasks (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The study identified factors that influence social participation among individuals with disabilities living in Brittany, and highlighted the actions implemented within the HIT project to address the challenges related to social participation.

Abstract Background Globally 1 in 7 people experience some type of disability. In Latin America, as in other regions, there are programs focused on the protection of sexual and reproductive rights of this population group. However, to date, in Peru there are no programs, protocols or guidelines that include a specialist (sexologist or trained health professional) in the health system to improve the quality of life and well-being of this population. Therefore, the objective of this article is to qualitatively analyze the experience of sexuality in people with acquired motor disabilities. Methods We used the interpretative phenomenological approach and the semi-structured in-depth interview composed of 60 questions, which was applied to 7 people (4 women and 3 men) with acquired motor disabilities. Results Diversity in the experience of sexuality was observed. While some experience it without fear, others have annulled their sexual encounters, because in addition to physical limitations, they experience psychosocial limitations such as pain, functional alterations, depression, low self-esteem, discrimination, exclusion, stigmas and socio-environmental barriers, among others. Likewise, the study reflected the double discrimination suffered by women (for being a woman and having a disability), as well as the lack of education, counseling or sex therapy by specialized professionals, and the influence of religion, society and culture as factors that condition and limit their sexuality. This reflects the current situation in Peru and other countries in the region, where the sexuality of people with disabilities continues to be a complex and ambiguous issue. Conclusions It is concluded that for some participants it is possible to experience sexuality without fear, while others hold back their experiences for reasons other than physical, self-esteem, social discrimination, among others. The review of the profile and level of specialization of the health services professionals involved in the integral medical care of people with disabilities and their couples is required because of their need for adequate and specialized attention for their better adaptation to the new condition.

Introduction: Oral health is extremely important for the quality of life and well-being. Findings reveal that people with special needs have difficulties in getting dental care, which increases their risk of oral diseases. The recommendations for dental examination are identical for patients with and without neurological impairment. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of caries and overall dental health among children with motor and mental disabilities in Northeastern Bulgaria. Methods: A total of 53 children with neurological impairment under the age of 18 were selected from Varna and Ruse from April to October 2017. Data on age, gender, height, weight, caregiver education level were collected. Information on oral hygiene behavior and diet was gathered as well. The 2013 World Health Organization standards for dental caries were used to assess the oral health status. The data were analyzed with the statistical package Jamovi v.2.2.2.0. Results: Children were divided into two groups – with predominantly motor or mental impairment. Both groups had high rates of caries and need for urgent dental treatment with no significant difference observed. The CPITN correlated positively with motor impairment (Spearman's rho= 0.393; p= 0.043). It was discovered that children with motor impairment had a higher prevalence of malocclusion than children with mental impairment (rho= -0.331; p= 0.016). The number of caries correlated as well with the type of occlusion (Spearman's rho=0.378; p=0.005), the dentition type (rho=0.343; p=0.012) and the age (rho= 0.372; p= 0.006). Conclusion: The study findings indicate that both types of neurological impairments were associated with a high frequency of caries and a significant need for urgent dental care. More frequent dental examination is thought to improve oral health. Nevertheless, more studies are required to substantiate this theory.

Background: Historically, intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) has been considered an important factor in choosing potential recipients of organ transplants among many transplant centers. This study evaluated the temporal changes at the national and regional levels in the proportion of heart transplantation in children with IDD. Methods: Children younger than 19 years in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database who received heart transplants from 2010 to 2021 were included in this study. The patients were grouped into only definitive intellectual disability, both definitive intellectual and motor disability, only definitive motor disability, and no developmental disability. Multinomial logistic regressions were used to examine the proportion of heart transplants in each category for the whole cohort and each geographic transplant region. Results: There were 4273 pediatric heart transplant recipients included in the study. From 2010 to 2021, the percentages of pediatric heart transplants increased from 3.8% (95% CI, 0.01–0.05) to 5.8% (95% CI, 0.03–0.08) in children with only definitive intellectual disability (OR 0.07; 95% CI, 0.02–0.1, ptrend <.002), from 3.4% (95% CI, 0.01–0.05) to 6.6% (95% CI, 0.04–0.09) in children with both definitive intellectual disability and motor disability (OR 0.09; 95% CI, 0.05–0.13, ptrend <.001), and from 5.2% (95% CI, 0.02–0.07) to 8.3% (95% CI, 0.05–0.1) in children with only definitive motor disability (OR 0.06; 95% CI, 0.02–0.09, ptrend <.002). There were several regional differences in the proportion of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who received heart transplants. Conclusion: There is increasing inclusion of children diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities in heart transplantation. This article presents the process of design, construction, application and lessons learned regarding a software tool that aims to be a support for programming activities, which is intended to support educational activities in areas of programming for people with motor disabilities, particularly with paresis (partial paralysis or weakening of muscle contractility), localized paralysis in arms, wrists or quadriplegia. The software functions are based on a set of instructions entered through voice commands, identified by reserved words, which allows the tool to differentiate language instructions and commands. The prototype of the tool was built and called Mancodev, in its first version with support for the JavaScript programming language. It was subjected to two tests: the first consisted of validating the software using disabled users. Five beginner's level programming participants completed a practice session and contributed their opinions, weaknesses and strengths. Subsequently, Mancodev was subjected to a second test, this time with the participation of ten university students from careers related to the programming area; in order to obtain feedback on the functionality of the tool from the point of view of an experienced programmer, the benefits and disadvantages detected were taken into account. In conclusion, the tests were considered positive because they allowed knowing the behavior of the tool, revealing some failures and opportunities, allowing to strengthen the prototype in future updates. Technological development offers new opportunities for people with disabilities, to improve their quality of life and increase their inclusion in society. Motor disability is an alteration that affects, at different levels, the movement or manipulation of a person. This paper presents the design and construction of the second version of an electronic device adaptable to a motorized wheelchair that serves as an intelligent navigation system. The first version of the electronic device only allowed for control of the wheelchair through head movements and voice commands. In this new version, the previous functions were improved and two new functions were incorporated. Muscle flexion and muscle contraction increase the options to control a motorized wheelchair by people with greater limitation of movement. Background: The provision of physical, psychological, and social rehabilitation becomes an important process for people with disabilities. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the degree of rehabilitation problems from caregiver's perspective at Babylon Center for Rehabilitation of the Disabled. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from the period from March 7th to May 4th, 2023. The study sample, consisted of 117 caregivers, is selected according to non-probability sampling approach. The validity of the questionnaire was verified by experts and its reliability was verified through a pilot study. Data were collected through the self-report techniques and analyzed by applying descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Results: The results indicate that the average age of the respondents was 42.15 ± SD = 4.39) years; they were mostly male respondents (79.5%), the Diploma graduated (57.3%), and less than 5 years experienced (59.8%). The degree of rehabilitation problems of people with motor disabilities was high in physical and psychological, and average in social problems. There is a negative correlation between rehabilitation problems and different genders, educational levels, and years of experience for caregivers. Conclusions: The study concludes that rehabilitation problems in terms of physical and psychological problems are very significant and are influenced by the professional characteristics of caregivers such as gender, educational level, and experience. It is recommended that the importance of educating and training various rehabilitation care providers about the nature of disability and ways to deal with it, especially for the physically disabled is highly recommended. Low back pain is one of the main causes of motor disabilities and psychological stress, with the painful process encompassing sensory and affective components. Noxious stimuli originate on the periphery; however, the stimuli are recombined in the brain and therefore processed differently due to the emotional environment. To better understand this process, our objective was to develop a mathematical representation of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) model of pain, covering the multidimensional representation of this phenomenon. Data from the Oswestry disability index; the short form of the depression, anxiety, and stress scale; and pain catastrophizing daily questionnaires were collected through online completion, available from 8 June 2022, to 8 April 2023 (1021 cases). Using the information collected, an artificial neural network structure was trained (based on anomaly detection methods) to identify the patterns that emerge from the relationship between the variables. The developed model proved to be robust and able to show the patterns and the relationship between the variables, and it allowed for differentiating the groups with altered patterns in the context of low back pain. The distinct groups all behave according to the main finding that psychological and pain events are directly associated. We conclude that our proposal is effective as it is able to test and confirm the definition of the IASP for the study of pain. Here we show that the fiscal and mental dimensions of pain are directly associated, meaning that mental illness can be an enhancer of pain episodes and functionality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motor disability includes the lack of sensation, movement, or coordination, and Assistive Technologies (AT) can help overcome these challenges. Motordisabled students need different ATs and configurations depending on courses and individual needs, and some solutions can be expensive. Some affordable AT has roots in gaming but can also be used for other purposes. However, there is little research on how they can be combined to define a personalized setting. Therefore, we performed a literature review to identify challenges and solutions to support students with motor disabilities in using information systems. The result defines a framework for identifying personalized settings. The usability of the result was demonstrated by performing a self-experimentation study of the first author, who has a motor disability. The results show its utility while learning process mining using the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and code-based tools. We identified challenges in using different User Interface (UI) elements, which can be used as a guideline for designers of process mining tools as well as other information systems to support diversity. Background. The development of the nervous system is a long-term and very complex process; at birth, the cerebral hemispheres are well outlined, and the maturation process continues at an accelerated rate. In cerebral palsy, there is damage or lack of development in one or more brain areas. The term “cerebral palsy” has been around for over a century. Aims. Through this research, we wanted to highlight the importance and effectiveness of physical therapy in recovering children with cerebral palsy. An effective recovery program is adapted, specific and individualised to the needs of each child. Methods. The research was conducted within the Maria Beatrice Socio-Medical Complex in Alba Iulia. It is a daycare center for recovering disabled children, especially those diagnosed with infantile cerebral palsy. This was comparative, prospective and interventional and took place over six months between 10.01.2022-10.06.2022. In the implemented study, 20 subjects participated; they were selected based on some inclusion criteria, namely: to be aged between 5 and 12 years, to be classified in GMFCS stage I or II, and not to present comorbidities such as hydrocephalus, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, or surgery that involved joint replacements in the lower limbs and spine surgery. The subjects in the experimental group benefited in addition to the control group from 16 minutes of exercises using the Galileo Board at each physical therapy session. The subjects were divided into two equal groups/groups, namely: group 1, the experimental group consisting of 5 girls and 5 boys aged between 6 and 11 years, classified as GMFCS stages I and II, and group 2, the control group, which also consists of 5 girls and 5 boys between the ages of 5 and 13 and placed in GMFCS stages I and II. Results. The highlighted percentage results of this study confirm the importance and effectiveness of physical therapy in the recovery of a child with infantile cerebral palsy spastic paraparesis. After the final assessment, itwas observed that each child evidenced an increase in gross motor function. Conclusions. This study again confirms the importance of physical therapy in recovering a child with a cerebral motor disability and spastic paraparesis. In collaboration with other supportive therapies, physical therapy contributes to independence and allows the child to enjoy a high quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is not a disease, however a syndrome advanced characterised by associate aberrant management of movement or posture, that seems early in life and ends up in long motor incapacity. The underlying causes of CP are still poorly understood. Many individual risk factors of CP are known, however less is understood concerning their interaction and the way they could relate to completely different pathophysiological pathways. The risk factors may be prenatal, intrapartum, neonatal or combined. Articles were searched to identify risk factors for CP, published from 2001 to 2021. A total of 43 relevant articles including randomised and non randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and comparative studies were included in this review. From selected analysis reports, most of the studies enclosed within the review showed sturdy strength of association as a causative factor responsible for CP. From this review, it had been ended that multiple risk factors overcome the defence mechanisms and lead to CP. Although any one factor, if severe, may be sufficient to cause CP so preventive strategies and early intervention for high-risk infants are needed.

Proper nutritional management is important for the growth and development of children with motor or intellectual disabilities; however, few studies have investigated the nutrient intake of children with disabilities. This study aimed to investigate the nutrient intake and food groups that are the main sources of nutrients for children with disabilities. This cross-sectional observational study included twenty-five children (mean age, 11⋅8 years) from five hospitals in Japan. Using a 3-d weighed dietary record, we estimated the daily nutrient intake and food and beverage sources that contributed to nutrient intake. The mean values of calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, and vitamin C intake were below the recommended dietary allowance, and those of dietary fiber and potassium were below the levels recommended by the Tentative Dietary Goal for Preventing Lifestyle-related Diseases (DG). In contrast, the mean intake values of fat, saturated fatty acids, and sodium were above the DG levels. Dairy products, meat, vegetables, and cereals were found to be the major contributors of nutrients. Increased intake of vegetables may help alleviate insufficient micronutrient intake in children with disabilities.

Introduction: While the role of physiotherapy as part of a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation is indisputable, clear evidence concerning the effectiveness of different rehabilitation managements [interdisciplinary implementing the International Classification of Functioning, disability and health (ICF) vs. multidisciplinary model] and physiotherapy categories (neuroproprioceptive "facilitation, inhibition" vs. motor/skill acquisitions using technologies) are still lacking. In this study, four kinds of comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation with different management and content of physical therapy will be compared. Moreover, focus will be placed on the identification of novel biological molecules reflective of effective rehabilitation. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts (>200 bps) of limited coding potential, which have recently been recognized as key factors in neuronal signaling pathways in ischemic stroke and as such, may provide a valuable readout of patient recovery and neuroprotection during therapeutic progression. Methods and analysis: Adults after the first ischemic stroke in an early sub-acute phase with motor disability will be randomly assigned to one of four groups and undergo a 3 weeks comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation of different types: interdisciplinary team work using ICF model as a guide; multidisciplinary teamwork implementing neuroproprioceptive "facilitation and inhibition" physiotherapy; multidisciplinary teamwork implementing technology-based physiotherapy; and standard multidisciplinary teamwork. Primary (the Goal Attainment Scale, the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System, and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule) and secondary (motor, cognitive, psychological, speech and swallowing functions, functional independence) outcomes will bemeasured. A blood sample will be obtained upon consent (20 mls; representing pre-rehabilitation molecular) before and after the inpatient program. Primary outcomes will be followed up again 3 and 12 months after the end of the program. The overarching aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of various rehabilitation managements and physiotherapeutic categories implemented by patients post ischemic stroke via analysis of primary, secondary and long non-coding RNA readouts. This clinical trial will offer an innovative approach not previously tested and will provide new complex analysis along with public assessable molecular biological evidence of various rehabilitation methodology for the alleviation of the effects of ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to determine the potential cognitive impairment associated with motor disability in a group of children attending regular schools and to analyze whether there were different cognitive profiles according to the type of motor disability they presented. The study had 87 participants, 31 healthy and 56 with three types of motor disability: Neuromuscular Diseases (NMD Group), Cerebral Palsy-Hemiparesis (CP- HPx Group) and Cerebral Palsy-Diplegia (CP-DP). Ages ranged from 6 to 18 years and they had medium and medium-high socioeconomic and cultural levels. All participants attended regular state-funded and independent schools in an inclusive modality. The neuropsychological assessment included the following cognitive domains: processing speed, working memory, verbal and visual episodic memory, language, visuo-perception and constructive praxis and executive functioning. A second analysis was performed with the groups with CP: one based on the severity of gross motor impairment (GMFCS-E&R scale) and the other based on the levels of manual dexterity (MACS scale). ANCOVAs were performed controlling for age and processing speed in the three analyses. The group with CP-HPx was shown to be the most cognitively impaired of the three groups, with significant deficits in visuo-perception, verbal working memory, and visuo-spatial memory. Subjects with greater gross motor dysfunction (GMFCS-E&R) did not show the greatest cognitive impairment, while those with worse manual dexterity (MACS) exhibited greater cognitive impairment. Children and adolescents with motor disabilities, a priori cognitively normal, present different levels of cognitive impairment. This should be considered when planning educational adaptations for this infant-juvenile population.

The primary goal of adaptive physical and special education is to increase the participation of individuals with special motor needs in educational and social activities. Current behavior modification and motivation techniques are based on descriptive explanations of physical activity behaviors and exercises provided by special educators to patients and parents; however, the efficacy of such techniques is largely unknown. The main purpose of this review was to determine how effective different special education techniques and behavior change interventions are for different domains of physical activity for patients with cerebral palsy spastic motor type. A scoping review of scientific/medical databases was conducted to identify relevant studies matched the pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Four studies were selected (n=173) implementing behavioral interventions across internet-based and in-person settings. Three of these studies were randomized controlled trials with pre-post differences in physical activity observed in youth with cerebral palsy following behavioral intervention, although improvements were not statistically different from controls. This scoping review collectively demonstrates that design and implementation of behavioral change interventions lead to improvements of specific motor skills and highlights the need for ongoing research in children and adults with special motor needs.

Low back pain is one of the main causes of motor disabilities and psychological stress, with the painful process encompassing sensory and affective components. Noxious stimuli originate on the periphery; however, the stimuli are recombined in the brain and therefore processed differently due to the emotional environment. To better understand this process, our objective was to develop a mathematical representation of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) model of pain, covering the multidimensional representation of this phenomenon. Data from the Oswestry disability index; the short form of the depression, anxiety, and stress scale; and pain catastrophizing daily questionnaires were collected through online completion, available from 8 June 2022, to 8 April 2023 (1021 cases). Using the information collected, an artificial neural network structure was trained (based on anomaly detection methods) to identify the patterns that emerge from the relationship between the variables. The developed model proved to be robust and able to show the patterns and the relationship between the variables, and it allowed for differentiating the groups with altered patterns in the context of low back pain. The distinct groups all behave according to the main finding that psychological and pain events are directly associated. We conclude that our proposal is effective as it is able to test and confirm the definition of the IASP for the study of pain. Here we show that the fiscal and mental dimensions of pain are directly associated, meaning that mental illness can be an enhancer of pain episodes and functionality.
