3. How HEXACO personality traits are involved in school performance of middle school adolescents (10–14 years)

Abstract

This paper aimed at investigating the relationship between HEXACO personality traits and academic performance in two samples of Italian 10–14 years old middle-school adolescents (N = 714 and N = 1093) using Multilevel Mixed Models. The main results show that: 1) Conscientiousness and Openness to Experience were the most important predictors of school performance, followed by Honesty-Humility; 2) a modest effect was present also for eXtraversion and Emotionality; 3) these influences occurred net of the influence of gender and class and could be generalized to male and female adolescents across 6th, 7th and 8th grade; 5) Perfectionism, Diligence and Prudence within Conscientiousness, Inquisitiveness within Openness, and Sincerity within Honesty-Humility were the facets more correlated with school performance; 6) results were replicated in two studies. Results are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

Abstract

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has had devastating effects on the Ukrainian population and the global economy, environment, and political order. However, little is known about the psychological states surrounding the outbreak of war, particularly the mental well-being of individuals outside Ukraine. Here, we present a longitudinal experience-sampling study of a convenience sample from 17 European countries (total participants = 1,341, total assessments = 44,894, countries with >100 participants = 5) that allows us to track well-being levels across countries during the weeks surrounding the outbreak of war. Our data show a significant decline in well-being on the day of the Russian invasion. Recovery over the following weeks was associated with an individual's personality but was not statistically significantly associated with their age, gender, subjective social status, and political orientation. In general, well-being was lower on days when the war was more salient on social media. Our results demonstrate the need to consider the psychological implications of the Russo-Ukrainian war next to its humanitarian, economic, and ecological consequences.

Abstract

Research assessing personality traits and religiosity across cultures has typically neglected variation across religious affiliations and has been limited to a small number of personality traits. This study examines the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and their facets, two theoretically distinct measures of religiosity, and twelve other personality traits across seven religious affiliations and 61 countries/regions. The proportion of participants following a religion varied substantially across countries (e.g., Indonesia = 99%; Estonia = 7%). Both measures of religiosity were related to agreeableness, conscientiousness, happiness, and fairness; however; relations with religiosity as a social axiom were stronger and less variable across religious affiliations. Additionally, personality-religiosity links were more robust in low-development, high-conflict, and collectivist nations.

8. The Role of HEXACO Personality Traits on Predicting Problematic and Risky Behaviors in Adolescents

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the HEXACO personality traits in predicting emotional and behavioral problems and risky behaviors in adolescents evaluated by an external observer (parent or legal guardian). To the study’s aim, 714 adolescents were recruited from seven schools in Campania (Italy), and for each adolescent, a parent (or legal guardian) was involved to obtain an indirect measure of adolescents’ behaviors. The adolescents filled out the HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI), the parents answered a set of items about emotional and behavioral problems and risky behaviors in adolescents instead. The results showed that Conscientiousness is the best predictor of youth risk behaviors, Honesty-Humility and eXtraversion are the best predictors of emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents instead. These findings extend our understanding of the relationship between HEXACO personality traits and emotional/behavioral problems and risky behaviors in young people, and further highlight the utility of Honesty-Humility, a dimension not considered in the Big Five model, in individual differences research.

9. Development and validation of an instrument to measure personality in adolescence: The HEXACO Medium School Inventory Extended (MSI-E)

Abstract

In this paper, we aimed at developing and validating a novel instrument to evaluate personality in 10-14 years old adolescents with six basic traits, with two dedicated studies. In Study 1, we generated a large pool of items (384 items) from three basic items sources, which we administered to 714 Italian adolescents. Using principal component analysis (PCA) and extension factor analysis, we selected the best eight items for each facet, and so the best 32 items for each factor, except for the Unconventionality facet of Openness to Experience (O) for which we selected the best six items. This resulted in a total of 190 items. The 190-item HEXACO-MSI had very good levels of dimensional validity and reliability, but it fell short in containing 8 items for each facet (i.e., for Unconventionality) and in balancing normal and reversed items within each facet. Therefore, in a second study we added items to the scale and verified again the dimensionality and reliability with the goal of developing a final version of the scale. In Study 2, we administered a version of the HEXACO-MSI consisting of 219 items to 1175 Italian adolescents. Using principal component analysis (PCA), we selected the best eight items for each facet equally balanced between normal and reversed items within each facet and factor. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the six-factor structure and its invariance. The results showed that the HEXACO-MSI-E had a clear six-factor structure in adolescents, that was invariant across gender and across the three middle school classes, and was reliable. Finally, we established temporal stability of each factor in two measurements after one year. Together with the positive results of this contribution, we discussed some aspects for future studies.

Abstract

In this cross-sectional study we aimed at: 1) validating the observer (Obs) version of HEXACO Medium School Inventory Extended (MSI-E); 2) establishing convergent and divergent construct validity of the HEXACO-MSI-E; 3) establishing criterion validity of HEXACO-MSI-E. We administered the HEXACO-MSI-E, the Big Five Questionnaire-Children (BFQ-C), the Internalizing and Externalizing scales of Youth Self Report (YSR), some items of the 2019 Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRB) and some items about adolescents’ values, beliefs, behaviors, and desired features of a possible future job to 1175 adolescents (Mage = 12.03, SD = 0.89) and the observer version of these measures (except for BFQ-C) to 854 parents or legal guardians. The factorial structure and the reliability of the Observer Report of HEXACO-MSI-E were confirmed. Convergent and divergent validity were successfully established with a version of the inventory filled out by parents. Convergent and divergent validity were also established with BFQ-C notwithstanding some only apparent anomalies. Criterion validity was established with respect to four specific groups of criteria collected in both self-report and observer form. HEXACO-MSI-E traits were more predictive with respect to self-report than to observer criteria and the majority were common. Together with the positive results of this study, implications and issues for future studies are discussed.

Abstract

We present a global experience-sampling method (ESM) study aimed at describing, predicting, and understanding individual differences in well-being during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This international ESM study is a collaborative effort of over 60 interdisciplinary researchers from around the world in the “Coping with Corona” (CoCo) project. The study comprises trait-, state-, and daily-level data of 7490 participants from over 20 countries (total ESM measurements = 207,263; total daily measurements = 73,295) collected between October 2021 and August 2022. We provide a brief overview of the theoretical background and aims of the study, present the applied methods (including a description of the study design, data collection procedures, data cleaning, and final sample), and discuss exemplary research questions to which these data can be applied. We end by inviting collaborations on the CoCo dataset.

Abstract

People in economically advantaged nations tend to evaluate their life as more positive overall and report greater well-being than people in less advantaged nations. But how does positivity manifest in the daily life experiences of individuals around the world? The present study asked 15,244 college students from 62 nations, in 42 languages, to describe a situation they experienced the previous day using the Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ). Using expert ratings, the overall positivity of each situation was calculated for both nations and individuals. The positivity of the average situation in each nation was strongly related to the economic development of the nation as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). For individuals’ daily experiences, the economic status of their nation also predicted the positivity of their experience, even more than their family socioeconomic status. Further analyses revealed the specific characteristics of the average situations for higher HDI nations that make their experiences more positive. Higher HDI was associated with situational experiences involving humor, socializing with others, and the potential to express emotions and fantasies. Lower HDI was associated with an increase in the presence of threats, blame, and hostility, as well as situational experiences consisting of family, religion, and money. Despite the increase in a few negative situational characteristics in lower HDI countries, the overall average experience still ranged from neutral to slightly positive, rather than negative, suggesting that greater HDI may not necessarily increase positive experiences but rather decrease negative experiences. The results illustrate how national economic status influences the lives of individuals even within a single instance of daily life, with large and powerful consequences when accumulated across individuals within each nation.

The results showed that all traits reflected specific goals and motivations, albeit some traits seemed to be more imbued with goal content than others. Having available a taxonomy and assessment of personality-related goals opens new possibilities for investigating motivational personality processes.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the inclusion of a battery energy storage system equipping a photovoltaic generation system in an industrial facility. The main objective of the analysis is the evaluation of the economic and environmental implications related to the design choices. Besides the economic viability evaluation, two indices have been used for the analysis, namely the self-consumption rate and self-sufficiency rate, which allowed evaluating the ability of the system to reduce energy request to the grid. As an economic indicator, a modification of the levelized cost of use index is proposed and its application on a prosumer facility is consider so assessing also the benefit derived from selling energy to the grid. A total cost analysis has been carried out in order to discuss the optimal battery sizing solution.

Abstract

Waveform distortions are one of the most diffused Power Quality disturbances and are nowadays gaining a growing interest by the researchers of modern smart grids where a massive presence of new technologies in distributed energy resources and in advanced smart metering systems is expected. Shunt active power filters are considered a high performing solution to limit the impact of this disturbance on the smart grid equipment, but their location and size in a multi-converter smart grid requires an optimization approach that should contemporaneously consider different and, sometimes, conflicting objectives. In this paper, a multi-objective optimization model is formulated to solve the problem and a new simplified approach is proposed to solve the model under non-certainty. The proposed approach applies the Rank-order centroid weights method and a criterion of the Decision Theory under non-certainty, assuming a complete knowledge of the future probabilities. Numerical applications to a test network permit to highlight the ease of application of the proposed method and the interest in the obtained results.

Abstract

Starting from the novel evaluation given in the recent Italian regulation to voltage dip costs, this paper focuses on distribution level and proposes to face voltage quality problems through the use of electrical energy storage systems which are supposed to provide voltage compensation in a medium voltage microgrid. The storage systems are assumed to be employed also for the reduction of the cost of energy sustained by the microgrid operator. A siting and sizing methodology of the electrical energy storage systems is proposed. For the economical evaluation, probabilistic distributions are used for some of the inputs of the procedure. Eventually, a sensitivity analysis is proposed aimed at analyzing the effects of different values of the penalties given for voltage dips.

The aim was establishing if the observer HEXACO-MSI personality traits predict academic performance beyond the same self-report traits. Participants were 1089 children and 1089 Observers. The results showed that ratings by observer add something more to the self-report evaluations. The observer HEXACO-MSI personality traits predict scholastic performance beyond the same self-report traits. Parents or caregivers provide an evaluation that can complement the one provided by the adolescents themselves.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the performance analysis of the corrosion protection system of HV power cables for undersea applications. The aim of the work is to describe the relations between the main electrical parameters affecting the electric potential distribution in the cable layers and in the surrounding medium, when an active cathodic protection (CP) arrangement is used. In particular, the analysis focuses on the design of an active CP for reducing corrosion phenomena of the cable metallic shield. This study is based on a 2D analytical approach supported by a detailed 3D finite element analysis (FEM). It gives evidence to the relation between the electrical variables and the design criteria of the active cathodic protection system.

We present the evaluation of the induced voltages in a lossless single transmission line, located at a given height over an infinite conductivity ground plane, and exited by an external field due to a step current moving along a vertical channel. This is a classic topic of the theory of lightning-induced voltages on power lines. The technical literature related to this topic has performed a significant effort; however, only approximated formulas have been obtained so far. In this paper, we derive the exact closed-form solution. We also will discuss, evaluate, and compare the approximated formulas with reference to the proposed exact one, thus contributing to clarifying a matter that still is debated and sometimes misleading, as we will show in the paper. We furthermore recall that the examined lightning-induced voltages model is fundamental for the IEEE standard 1410, a guide for improving the lightning performance of power distribution line. Abstract

As of January 2020, a new pandemic has spread from Wuhan and caused thousands of deaths worldwide. Several studies have observed a relationship between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection and the cardiovascular system with the appearance of myocardial damage, myocarditis, pericarditis, heart failure and various arrhythmic manifestations, as well as an increase in thromboembolic risk. Cardiovascular manifestations have been highlighted especially in older and more fragile patients and in those with multiple cardiovascular risk factors such as cancer, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. In this review, we will examine the cardiac involvement associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, focusing on the pathophysiological mechanism underlying manifestations and their clinical implication, taking into account the main scientific papers published to date.
