We present high time resolution optical photometric data of the polar VV Puppis obtained simultaneously in three filters (u', HeII $\lambda$4686, r') with the ULTRACAM camera mounted at the ESO-VLT telescope. An analysis of a long 50 ks XMM-Newton observation of the source, retrieved from the database, is also provided. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are clearly detected in the optical during the source bright phase intervals when the accreting pole is visible, confirming the association of the QPOs with the basis of the accretion column. QPOs are detected in the three filters at a mean frequency of $\sim$ 0.7 Hz with a similar amplitude $\sim$ 1\%. Mean orbitally-averaged power spectra during the bright phase show a rather broad excess with a quality factor Q= $\nu$/$\Delta \nu$ = 5-7 but smaller data segments commonly show a much higher coherency with Q up to 30. The XMM (0.5--10 keV) observation provides the first accurate estimation of the hard X-ray component with a high kT $\sim$ 40 keV temperature and confirms the high EUV-soft/hard ratio in the range of (4--15) for VV Pup. The detailed X-ray orbital light curve displays a short $\Delta \phi \simeq 0.05$ ingress into self-eclipse of the active pole, indicative of a accretion shock height of $\sim$ 75 km. No significant X-ray QPOs are detected with an amplitude upper limit of $\sim$30\% in the range (0.1--5) Hz. Detailed hydrodynamical numerical simulations of the post-shock accretion region with parameters consistent with VV Pup demonstrate that the expected frequencies from radiative instability are identical for X-rays and optical regime at values $\nu$ $\sim$ (40--70) Hz, more than one order magnitude higher than observed. A new target design is presented to model high-energy radiative accretion shocks in polars. In this paper, we present the experimental results obtained on the GEKKO XII laser facility for the POLAR project. The experimental results are compared with 2D FCI2 simulations to characterize the dynamics and the structure of plasma flow before and after the collision. The good agreement between simulations and experimental data confirm the formation of a reverse shock where cooling losses start modifying the post-shock region. With the multi-material structure of the target, a hydrodynamic collimation is exhibited and a radiative structure coupled with the reverse shock is highlighted in both experimental data and simulations. The flexibility on the laser energy produced on GEKKO XII, allowed us to produce high-velocity flows and study new and interesting radiation hydrodynamic regimes between those obtained on the LULI2000 and Orion laser facilities., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, accepted in High Power Laser Science and Engineering journal

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of a few seconds have been detected in some Polars, the synchronised subclass of cataclysmic systems containing a strongly magnetised white dwarf (WD) which accretes matter from a red dwarf companion. The QPOs are thought to be related to instabilities of a shock formed in the accretion column, close to the WD photosphere above the impact region. We present optical observations of the polar V834 Centauri performed with the fast ULTRACAM camera mounted on the ESO-VLT simultaneously in three filters (u', He II 4686A, r') to study these oscillations and characterise their properties along the orbit. Fast Fourier transforms and wavelet analysis have been performed and the mean frequency, rms amplitude, and coherence of the QPOs are derived; a detailed inspection of individual pulses has also been performed. The observations confirm the probable ubiquity of the QPOs for this source at all epochs when the source is in a high state, with observed mean amplitude of 2.1 percent (r'), 1.5 percent (He II), and 0.6 percent (u'). Trains of oscillations are clearly observed in the r' light curve and can be mimicked by a superposition of damped sinusoids with various parameters. The QPO energy distribution is comparable to that of the cyclotron flux, consistent for the r' and He II filters but requiring a significant dilution in the u' filter. New 1D hydrodynamical simulations of shock instabilities, adapted to the physical parameters of V834 Cen, can account for the optical QPO amplitude and X-ray upper limit assuming a cross section of the accretion column in the range (4-5) E14 cm2. However, the predicted frequency is larger than the observed one by an order of magnitude. This shortcoming indicates that the QPO generation is more complex than that produced in a homogeneous column and calls for a more realistic 3D treatment of the accretion flow in future modelling., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We model the observed X-ray spectral continuum shape, ionic column densities, and absorption measure distribution (AMD) of the warm absorber in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3783. We assume a photo-ionized medium with a uniform total (gas+radiation) pressure. The irradiation causes the wind to be radiation pressure compressed (RPC). We compare the observational characteristics derived from the 900 ksec Chandra observation to radiative transfer computations in pressure equilibrium using the radiative transfer code TITAN. We explore different values of the ionization parameter xi of the incident flux and adjust the hydrogen-equivalent column density, N_H0 of the warm absorber to match the observed soft X-ray continuum. We derive theoretical column densities for a broad range of ionic species of iron and neon and an AMD that we compare to the observations. We find an extension of the degeneracy between xi and N_H0 for the constant pressure models previously discussed for NGC 3783. Including the ionic column densities of iron and neon in the comparison between observations and data we conclude that a range of ionization parameters between 4000 and 8000 ergs cm/s is preferred. For the first time, we present theoretical AMD for a constant pressure wind in NGC 3783 that correctly reproduces the observed level and is in approximate agreement with the observational appearance of an instability region. Using a variety of observational indicators, we confirm that the X-ray outflow of NGC 3783 can be described as an RPC medium in pressure equilibrium. The observed AMD agrees with a uniformly hot or a uniformly cold thermal state. The measured ionic column densities suggest that the wind tends to the uniformly cold thermal state. The occurrence of thermal instability in the warm absorber model may depend on the computational method and the spatial scale on which the radiative transfer is solved., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed in the optical flux of some polars with typical periods of 1 to 3 s but none have been observed yet in X-rays where a significant part of the accreting energy is released. QPOs are expected and predicted from shock oscillations. Most of the polars have been observed by the XMM-Newton satellite. We made use of the homogeneous set of observations of the polars by XMM-Newton to search for the presence of QPOs in the (0.5-10 keV) energy range and to set significant upper limits for the brightest X-ray polars. We extracted high time-resolution X-ray light curves by taking advantage of the 0.07 sec resolution of the EPIC-PN camera. Among the 65 polars observed with XMM-Newton from 1998 to 2012, a sample of 24 sources was selected on the basis of their counting rate in the PN instrument to secure significant limits. We searched for QPOs using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods and defined limits of detection using statistical tools. Among the sample surveyed, none shows QPOs at a significant level. Upper limits to the fractional flux in QPOs range from 7% to 71%. These negative results are compared to the detailed theoretical predictions of numerical simulations based on a 2D hydrodynamical code presented in Paper II. Cooling instabilities in the accretion column are expected to produce shock quasi-oscillations with a maximum amplitude reaching ~ 40% in the bremsstrahlung (0.5-10 keV) X-ray emission and ~ 20% in the optical cyclotron emission. The absence of X-ray QPOs imposes an upper limit of ~ (5-10) g.cm-2.s-1 on the specific accretion rate but this condition is found inconsistent with the value required to account for the amplitudes and frequencies of the observed optical QPOs. Magnetic cataclysmic variables are close binary systems containing a strongly magnetized white dwarf that accretes matter coming from an M-dwarf companion. High-energy radiation coming from those objects is emitted from the accretion column close to the white dwarf photosphere at the impact region. Its properties depend on the characteristics of the white dwarf and an accurate accretion column model allows the properties of the binary system to be inferred, such as the white dwarf mass, its magnetic field, and the accretion rate. We study the temporal and spectral behaviour of the accretion region and use the tools we developed to accurately connect the simulation results to the X-ray and optical astronomical observations. The radiation hydrodynamics code Hades was adapted to simulate this specific accretion phenomena. Classical approaches were used to model the radiative losses of the two main radiative processes: bremsstrahlung and cyclotron. The oscillation frequencies and amplitudes in the X-ray and optical domains are studied to compare those numerical results to observational ones. Different dimensional formulae were developed to complete the numerical evaluations. The complete characterization of the emitting region is described for the two main radiative regimes: when only the bremsstrahlung losses and when both cyclotron and bremsstrahlung losses are considered. The effect of the non-linear cooling in- stability regime on the accretion column behaviour is analysed. Variation in luminosity on short timescales (~ 1 s quasi-periodic oscillations) is an expected consequence of this specific dynamic. The importance of secondary shock instability on the quasi-periodic oscillation phenomenon is discussed. The stabilization effect of the cyclotron process is confirmed by our numerical simulations, as well as the power distribution in the various modes of oscillation., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. The peculiar low mass X-ray binary XSSJ12270-4859, associated with the Fermi/LAT source 2FGLJ1227.7-4853, was in a X-ray, gamma-ray and optical low-luminosity persistent state for about a decade until the end of 2012, when it has entered into the dimmest state ever observed. The nature of the compact object has been controversial until the detection of a 1.69ms radio pulsar early 2014. We present optical spectroscopy and optical/near-IR photometry during the previous brighter and in the recent faint states. We determine the first spectroscopic orbital ephemeris and an accurate orbital period of 6.91246(5)h. We infer a mid G-type donor star and a distance d=1.8-2.0kpc. The donor spectral type changes from G5V to F5V between inferior and superior conjunction, a signature of strong irradiation effects. We infer a binary inclination 45deg <~ i <~ 65deg and a highly undermassive donor, M_2 ~ 0.06-0.12M_sun for a neutron star mass in the range 1.4-3M_sun. Thus this binary joins as the seventh member the group of "redbacks". In the high state, the emission lines reveal the presence of an accretion disc. They tend to vanish at the donor star superior conjunction, where also flares are preferentially observed together with the occurrence of random dips. This behaviour could be related to the propeller mechanism of the neutron star recently proposed to be acting in this system during the high state. In the low state, the emission lines are absent at all orbital phases indicating that accretion has completely switched-off and that XSSJ12270-4859 has transited from an accretion-powered to a rotation-powered phase., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables accepted for publication in Monthly Notices Royal Astronomical Society, Main Journal

The INTEGRAL and Swift hard X-ray surveys have identified a large number of new sources, among which many are proposed as Cataclysmic Variables (CVs). Here we present the first detailed study of three X-ray selected CVs, Swift J1907.3-2050, IGRJ12123-5802, and IGRJ19552+0044 based on XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift observations and ground based optical and archival nIR/IR data. Swift J1907.3-2050 is highly variable from hours to months-years at all wavelengths. No coherent X-ray pulses are detected but rather transient features. The X-ray spectrum reveals a multi-temperature optically thin plasma absorbed by complex neutral material and a soft black body component arising from a small area. These characteristics are remarkably similar to those observed in magnetic CVs. A supra-solar abundance of nitrogen could arise from nuclear processed material from the donor star. Swift J1907.3-2050 could be a peculiar magnetic CV with the second longest (20.82 h) binary period. IGRJ12123-5802 is variable in the X-rays on a timescale of ~7.6 h. No coherent pulsations are detected, but its spectral characteristics suggest that it could be a magnetic CV of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. IGRJ19552+0044 shows two X-ray periods, 1.38 h and 1.69 h and a X-ray spectrum characterized by a multi-temperature plasma with little absorption.We derive a low accretion rate, consistent with a CV below the orbital period gap. Its peculiar nIR/IR spectrum suggests a contribution from cyclotron emission. XSSJ1227.0-4859 is a peculiar, hard X-ray source recently positionally associated to the Fermi-LAT source 1FGLJ1227.9-4852/2FGLJ1227.7-4853. Multi-wavelength observations have added information on this source, indicating a low-luminosity low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB), but its nature is still unclear. To progress in our understanding, we present new X-ray data from a monitoring campaign performed in 2011 with the XMM-Newton, RXTE, and Swift satellites and combine them with new gamma-ray data from the Fermi and AGILE satellites. We complement the study with simultaneous near-UV photometry from XMM-Newton and with previous UV/optical and near-IR data. The X-ray history of XSSJ1227.0-4859 over 7yr shows a persistent and rather stable low-luminosity (~6x10^33 d_{1\,kpc}^2 erg/s) source, with flares and dips being peculiar and permanent characteristics. The associated Fermi-LAT source 2FGLJ1227.7-4853 is also stable over an overlapping period of 4.7\,yr. Searches for X-ray fast pulsations down to msec give upper limits to pulse fractional amplitudes of 15-25% that do not rule out a fast spinning pulsar. The combined UV/optical/near-IR spectrum reveals a hot component at ~13\,kK and a cool one at ~4.6\,kK. The latter would suggest a late-type K2-K5 companion star, a distance range of1.4--3.6kpc and an orbital period of 7--9 h. A near-UV variability (>6\,h) also suggests a longer orbital period than previously estimated. The analysis shows that the X-ray and UV/optical/near-IR emissions are more compatible with an accretion-powered compact object than with a rotational powered pulsar. The X-ray to UV bolometric luminosity ratio could be consistent with a binary hosting a neutron star, but the uncertainties in the radio data may also allow an LMXB black hole with a compact jet. The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultra-dense matter. These primary science goals will be addressed by a payload composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a collimated (<1 degree field of view) experiment operating in the energy range 2-50 keV, with a 10 m^2 peak effective area and an energy resolution of 260 eV at 6 keV. The WFM will operate in the same energy range as the LAD, enabling simultaneous monitoring of a few-steradian wide field of view, with an angular resolution of <5 arcmin. The LAD and WFM experiments will allow us to investigate variability from submillisecond QPO's to year-long transient outbursts. We aim at characterizing a sample of 9 new hard X-ray selected Cataclysmic Variable (CVs), to unambiguously identify them as magnetic systems of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. We performed timing and spectral analysis by using X-ray, and simultaneous UV and optical data collected by XMM-Newton, complemented with hard X-ray data provided by INTEGRAL and Swift. The pulse arrival time were used to estimate the orbital periods. The X-ray spectra were fitted using composite models consisting of different absorbing columns and emission components. Strong X-ray pulses at the White Dwarf (WD) spin period are detected and found to decrease with energy. Most sources are spin-dominated systems in the X-rays, though four are beat dominated at optical wavelengths. We estimated the orbital period in all system (except for IGR J16500-3307), providing the first estimate for IGR J08390-4833, IGR J18308-1232, and IGR J18173-2509. All X-ray spectra are multi-temperature. V2069 Cyg and RX J0636+3535 posses a soft X-ray optically thick component at kT 80 eV. An intense K_alpha Fe line at 6.4 keV is detected in all sources. An absorption edge at 0.76 keV from OVII is detected in IGR J08390-4833. The WD masses and lower limits to the accretion rates are estimated. We found all sources to be IPs. IGR J08390-4833, V2069 Cyg, and IGR J16500-3307 are pure disc accretors, while IGR J18308-1232, IGR J1509-6649, IGR J17195-4100, and RX J0636+3535 display a disc-overflow accretion mode. All sources show a temperature gradient in the post-shock regions and a highly absorbed emission from material located in the pre-shock flow which is also responsible for the X-ray pulsations. Reflection at the WD surface is likely the origin of the fluorescent iron line. There is an increasing evidence for the presence of a warm absorber in IPs. We review the X-ray spectral properties of magnetic cataclysmic binaries derived from observations obtained during the last decade with the large X-ray observatories XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku. We focus on the signatures of the different accretion modes which are predicted according to the values of the main physical parameters (magnetic field, local accretion rate and white dwarf mass). The observed large diversity of spectral behaviors indicates a wide range of parameter values in both intermediate polars and polars, in line with a possible evolutionary link between both classes., Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of "The Golden Age of Cataclysmic Variables (Palermo 2011)", in Mem. The X-ray source XSS J12270-4859 has been first suggested to be a magnetic cataclysmic variable of Intermediate Polar type on the basis of its optical spectrum and a possible 860 s X-ray periodicity. However further X-ray observations by the Suzaku and XMM-Newton satellites did not confirm this periodicity but show a very peculiar variability, including moderate repetitive flares and numerous absorption dips. These characteristics together with a suspected 4.3 h orbital period would suggest a possible link with the so- called "dipping sources", a sub-class of Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXB). Based on the released FERMI catalogues, the source was also found coincident with a very high energy (0.1-300 GeV) VHE source 2FGL J1227.7-4853. The good positional coincidence, together with the lack of any other bright X-ray sources in the field, makes this identification highly probable. However, none of the other standard LMXBs have been so far detected by FERMI. Most galactic VHE sources are associated with rotation-powered pulsars. We present here new results obtained from a 30 ksec high-time resolution XMM observations in January 2011 that confirm the flaring-dipping behaviour and provide upper limits on fast X-ray pulsations. We report an analysis and modelling of new Suzaku observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxies Mrk509 and Mrk841, taken between April and November 2006,for Mrk509,and between January and July 2007,for Mrk841,for a total exposure time of ~100 ks each.Data from XIS and HXD/PIN instruments,going from 0.5 to 60 keV,represent the highest spectral resolution simultaneous broad-band X-ray spectrum for these objects.We fitted the broad-band spectrum of both sources with a double Comptonisation model,adding neutral reflection from distant material and a two-phase warm absorber.We then studied the two competing models developed to explain the soft excess in terms of atomic processes:a blurred ionised disc reflection and an ionised absorption by a high velocity material.When fitting the data in the 3-10 keV range with a power law spectrum,and extrapolating this result to low energies,a soft excess is clearly observed below 2 keV:its strength is however weak compared to previous observations of both sources.A moderate hard excess is seen at energies greater than 10 keV,together with a neutral Fe K_a narrow emission line at E~6.4 keV and a broad Fe emission line.For Mrk509,the broad Fe emission line is required in all the three physical models in order to have a good fit to the data:this finding suggests that the blurred reflection model correctly describes the soft excess,but that it underestimates the broad Fe emission line.For the smeared absorption model,this suggests instead that the continuum spectrum absorbed by the outflowing gas should contain indeed a reflected component.For Mrk841,all three models that we tested provide a good fit to the data,and we cannot invalidate any of them.A broad emission line is required in the double Comptonisation and smeared absorption models,while the blurred reflection model consistently fits the broad-band spectrum,without adding any extra emission-line component., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The nature of the hard X-ray source XSSJ12270-4859 is still unclear though it was claimed to be a magnetic Cataclysmic Variable. We here present a broad-band X-ray and gamma ray study based on a recent XMM-Newton observation and archival INTEGRAL and RXTE data. From the Fermi/LAT 1-year point source catalogue, we tentatively associate XSSJ12270-4859 with 1FGLJ1227.9-4852, a source of high energy gamma rays with emission up to 10GeV. We complement the study with UV photometry from XMM-Newton and ground-based optical and near-IR photometry. The X-ray emission is highly variable showing flares and intensity dips. The X-ray flares consist of flare-dip pairs. Flares are also detected in the UV range but not the dips. Aperiodic dipping behaviour is also observed during X-ray quiescence but not in the UV. The 0.2-100keV spectrum is featureless and described by a power law model with Gamma=1.7. The 100MeV-10GeV spectrum is instead represented by a power law index of 2.45. The luminosity ratio between 0.1-100GeV and 0.2--100keV is ~0.8, hence the GeV emission is a significant component of the total energy output. Furthermore, the X-ray spectrum does not greatly change during flares, quiescence and the dips seen in quiescence but it hardens during the post-flare dips. Optical photometry reveals a period of 4.32hr likely related to the binary orbit. Near-IR, possibly ellipsoidal, variations are detected. Large amplitude variability on shorter (tens mins) timescales are found to be non-periodic. The observed variability at all wavelengths and the spectral characteristics strongly favour a low-mass atypical low-luminosity X-ray binary and are against a Cataclysmic Variable nature. The Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk841 was observed five times between 2001 and 2005 by the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory. The source is well known for showing spectral complexity in the variable iron line and in the soft X-ray excess. This paper reports on the first study of Mrk841 soft X-ray spectrum at high spectral resolution. The availability of multiple exposures obtained by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) cameras allows a thorough study of the complex absorption and emission spectral features in the soft X-ray band.The three combined exposures obtained in January 2001 and the two obtained in January and July 2005 were analysed using the SPEX software. We detect a two-phase warm absorber: a medium ionisation component (logxi~1.5-2.2 ergs s cm^{-1}) is responsible for a deep absorption feature in the Unresolved Transition Array of the Fe M-shell and for several absorption lines in the OVI-VIII band; a higher ionisation phase with logxi~3 ergs s cm^{-1} is required to fit absorption in the NeIX-X band. The ionisation state and the column density of the gas present moderate variation from 2001 to 2005 for both phases. The high ionisation component of the warm absorber has no effect in the Fe K band. No significant velocity shift of the absorption lines is measured in the RGS data. Remarkably, the 2005 spectra show emission features consistent with photoionisation in a high density (n_e>10^{11} cm^{-3}) gas: a prominent OVII line triplet is clearly observed in January 2005 and narrow Radiative Recombination Continua (RRC) of OVII and CVI are observed in both 2005 data sets. A broad Gaussian line around 21.7 Angstrom is also required to fit all the data sets. We present 139 spectra of 124 Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) that were observed at the ESO/VLT during the first three years of the Canada-France-Hawai Telescope (CFHT) Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). This homogeneous data set is used to test for redshift evolution of SNeIa spectra, and will be used in the SNLS 3rd year cosmological analyses. Spectra have been reduced and extracted with a dedicated pipeline that uses photometric information from deep CFHT Legacy Survey (CFHT-LS) reference images to trace, at sub-pixel accuracy, the position of the supernova on the spectrogram as a function of wavelength. It also separates the supernova and its host light in 60% of cases. The identification of the supernova candidates is performed using a spectrophotometric SNIa model. A total of 124 SNeIa, roughly 50% of the overall SNLS spectroscopic sample, have been identified using the ESO/VLT during the first three years of the survey. Their redshifts range from z=0.149 to z=1.031. The average redshift of the sample is z=0.63+/-0.02. This constitutes the largest SNIa spectral set to date in this redshift range. The spectra are presented along with their best-fit spectral SNIa model and a host model where relevant. In the latter case, a host subtracted spectrum is also presented. We produce average spectra for pre-maximum, maximum and post-maximum epochs for both z<0.5 and z>=0.5 SNeIa. We find that z<0.5 spectra have deeper intermediate mass element absorptions than z>= 0.5 spectra. A significant number of cataclysmic variables were detected as hard X-ray sources in the INTEGRAL survey, most of them of the magnetic intermediate polar type. We present a detailed X-ray broad-band study of two new sources, IGR J00234+6141 and 1RXS J213344.1+510725, that allow us to classify them as secure members of the intermediate polar class. Timing and spectral analysis of IGR J00234+6141 are based on a XMM-Newton observation and INTEGRAL publicly available data. For 1RXS J213344.1+510725 we use XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations at different epochs, as well as INTEGRAL publicly available data. We determine a spin period of 561.64 +/- 0.56 s for the white dwarf in IGR J00234+6141. The X-ray pulses are observed up to about 2 keV. From XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of 1RXS J213344.1+510725, we find a rotational period of 570.862 +/- 0.034 s. The observations span three epochs where the pulsation is observed to change at different energies both in amplitude and shape. In both objects, the spectral analysis spanned over a wide energy range, from 0.3 to 100 keV, shows the presence of multiple emission components absorbed by dense material. The X-ray spectrum of IGR J00234+6141 is consistent with a multi-temperature plasma with a maximum temperature of about 50 keV. In 1RXS J213344.1+510725, multiple optically thin components are inferred, as well as an optically thick (blackbody) soft X-ray emission with a temperature of about 100 eV. We use three years of data from the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) to study the general properties of core-collapse and type Ia supernovae. This is the first such study using the "rolling search" technique which guarantees well-sampled SNLS light curves and good efficiency for supernovae brighter than $i^\prime\sim24$. Using host photometric redshifts, we measure the supernova absolute magnitude distribution down to luminosities $4.5 {\rm mag}$ fainter than normal SNIa. Using spectroscopy and light-curve fitting to discriminate against SNIa, we find a sample of 117 core-collapse supernova candidates with redshifts $z<0.4$ (median redshift of 0.29) and measure their rate to be larger than the type Ia supernova rate by a factor $4.5\pm0.8(stat.) \pm0.6 (sys.)$. This corresponds to a core-collapse rate at $z=0.3$ of $[1.42\pm 0.3(stat.) \pm0.3(sys.)]\times10^{-4}\yr^{-1}(h_{70}^{-1}\Mpc)^{-3}$., Comment: accepted Astronomy and Astrophysics

Aim: We present new extraction and identification techniques for supernova (SN) spectra developed within the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) collaboration. Method: The new spectral extraction method takes full advantage of photometric information from the Canada-France-Hawai telescope (CFHT) discovery and reference images by tracing the exact position of the supernova and the host signals on the spectrogram. When present, the host spatial profile is measured on deep multi-band reference images and is used to model the host contribution to the full (supernova + host) signal. The supernova is modelled as a Gaussian function of width equal to the seeing. A chi-square minimisation provides the flux of each component in each pixel of the 2D spectrogram. For a host-supernova separation greater than <~ 1 pixel, the two components are recovered separately and we do not use a spectral template in contrast to more standard analyses. This new procedure permits a clean extraction of the supernova separately from the host in about 70% of the 3rd year ESO/VLT spectra of the SNLS. A new supernova identification method is also proposed. It uses the SALT2 spectrophotometric template to combine the photometric and spectral data. A galaxy template is allowed for spectra for which a separate extraction of the supernova and the host was not possible. Result: These new techniques have been tested against more standard extraction and identification procedures. They permit a secure type and redshift determination in about 80% of cases. We analyze the first X-ray observations with XMM-Newton of RXS J070407.9+262501 and 1RXS 180340.0+401214, in order to characterize their broad-band temporal and spectral properties, also in the UV/optical domain, and to confirm them as Intermediate Polars. For both objects, we performed a timing analysis of the X-ray and UV/optical light curves to detect the white dwarf spin pulsations and study their energy dependence. For 1RXS 180340.0+401214 we also analyzed optical spectroscopic data to determine the orbital period. X-ray spectra were analyzed in the 0.2-10.0 keV range to characterize the emission properties of both sources. We find that the X-ray light curves of both systems are energy dependent and are dominated, below 3-5 keV, by strong pulsations at the white dwarf rotational periods (480 s for 1RXS J070407.9+262501 and 1520.5 s for 1RXS 180340.0+401214). In 1RXS 180340.0+401214 we also detect an X-ray beat variability at 1697 s which, together with our new optical spectroscopy, favours an orbital period of 4.4 hr that is longer than previously estimated. Both systems show complex spectra with a hard (up to 40 keV) optically thin and a soft (85-100 eV) optically thick components heavily absorbed by material partially covering the X-ray sources. Our observations confirm the two systems as Intermediate Polars and also add them as new members of the growing group of 'soft' systems which show the presence of a soft X-ray blackbody component. Differences in the temperatures of the blackbodies are qualitatively explained in terms of reprocessing over different sizes of the white dwarf spot. We suggest that systems showing cooler soft X-ray blackbody components also possess white dwarfs irradiated by cyclotron radiation., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the first X-ray observations with the XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL satellites of the recently discovered cataclysmic variable 1RXSJ173021.5-055933, together with simultaneous UV and coordinated optical photometry aiming at characterising its broad-band temporal and spectral properties and classifying this system as a magnetic one. We find that the X-ray light curve is dominated by the 128s spin period of the accreting white dwarf in contrast to the far-UV range, which turns out to be unmodulated at a 3sigma level. Near-UV and optical pulses are instead detected at twice the spin frequency. We identify the contributions from two accreting poles that imply a moderately inclined dipole field allowing, one pole to dominate at energies at least up to 10keV, and a secondary that instead is negligible above 5keV. X-ray spectral analysis reveals the presence of multiple emission components consisting of optically thin plasma with temperatures ranging from 0.17keV to 60keV and a hot blackbody at ~90eV. The spectrum is also strongly affected by peculiar absorption components consisting of two high-density (~3x10^(21)cm^(-2) and ~2x10^(23)cm^(-2)) intervening columns, plus a warm absorber. The last is detected from an OVII absorption edge at 0.74keV, which suggests that photoionization of pre-shock material is also occurring in this system. The observed properties indicate that the accretor in 1RXSJ173021.5-055933 is a white dwarf with a likely weak magnetic field, thus confirming this cataclysmic variable as an intermediate polar (IP) with one of the most extreme spin-to-orbit period ratios. This system also joins the small group of IPs showing a soft X-ray reprocessed component, suggesting that this characteristics is not uncommon in these systems., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present multi-band light curves and distances for five type Ia supernovae at intermediate redshifts, 0.18

[abridged] We model the X-ray reprocessing from a strong co-rotating flare above an accretion disk in active galactic nuclei. We explore the horizontal structure and evolution of the underlying hot spot. To obtain the spectral evolution seen by a distant observer, we apply a general relativity ray-tracing technique. We concentrate on the energy band around the iron K-line, where the relativistic effects are most pronounced. Persistent flares lasting for a significant fraction of the orbital time scale and short, transient flares are considered. In our time-resolved analysis, the spectra recorded by a distant observer depend on the position of the flare/spot with respect to the central black hole. If the flare duration significantly exceeds the light travel time across the spot, then the spot horizontal stratification is unimportant. On the other hand, if the flare duration is comparable to the light travel time across the spot radius, the lightcurves exhibit a typical asymmetry in their time profiles. The sequence of dynamical spectra proceeds from more strongly to less strongly ionized re-emission. At all locations within the spot the spectral intensity increases towards edge-on emission angles, revealing the limb brightening effect. Future X-ray observatories with significantly larger effective collecting areas will enable to spectroscopically map out the azimuthal irradiation structure of the accretion disk and to localize persistent flares. If the hot spot is not located too close to the marginally stable orbit of the black hole, it will be possible to probe the reflecting medium via the sub-structure of the iron K-line. Following an extensive survey of the galactic plane by the INTEGRAL satellite, new hard X-ray sources are discovered with a significant fraction of Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) among them. We report here the identification of one of these hard X-ray sources, IGR J00234+6141, as an accreting magnetic white dwarf of intermediate polar type. We analyse the high energy emission of the INTEGRAL source using all available data and provide complementary optical photometric and spectroscopic data obtained respectively in August and October 2006. Based on a refined INTEGRAL position, we confirm the proposed optical identification. We clearly detect the presence of a 564 s periodic optical modulation that we identify as the rotation of the white dwarf. The analysis of the optical spectrum also demonstrates that the emission lines show a modulation in radial velocity with an orbital period of Porb = (4.033 +/- 0.005) hr. The two periodicities indicate that IGR00234+6141 is a magnetic CV of the intermediate polar type. This is one of the faintest and hardest sources of this type detected by INTEGRAL. Mkr 841 is a bright Seyfert 1 galaxy known to harbor a strong soft excess and a variable K$\alpha$ iron line. It has been observed during 3 different periods by XMM for a total cumulated exposure time of $\sim$108 ks. We present in this paper a broad band spectral analysis of the complete EPIC-pn data sets. We were able to test two different models for the soft excess, a relativistically blurred photoionized reflection (\r model) and a relativistically smeared ionized absorption (\a model). The continuum is modeled by a simple cut-off power law and we also add a neutral reflection. These observations reveal the extreme and puzzling spectral and temporal behaviors of the soft excess and iron line. The 0.5-3 keV soft X-ray flux decreases by a factor 3 between 2001 and 2005 and the line shape appears to be a mixture of broad and narrow components. We succeed in describing this complex broad-band 0.5-10 keV spectral variability using either \r or \a to fit the soft excess. Both models give statistically equivalent results even including simultaneous BeppoSAX data up to 200 keV. Both models are consistent with the presence of remote reflection characterized by a constant narrow component in the data. However they differ in the presence of a broad line component present in \r but not needed in \a. We present spectra of six Type Ia and two Type II supernovae obtained in June 2002 at the William Herschel Telescope during a search for Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) at intermediate redshift. Supernova type identification and phase determination are performed using a fitting technique based on a Xi2 minimization against a series of model templates. The spectra range from z=0.033 to z=0.328, including one spectroscopically underluminous SNIa at z=0.033. This set of spectra significantly increases the sample of well-observed type SNIa supernovae available in the range 0.15< z <0.35. Together with the twelve supernovae observed by our team in 1999 in the same redshift range, they form an homogeneous sample of seventeen type Ia supernovae with comparable signal-to-noise ratio and regular phase sampling in a still largely unexplored region of the redshift space., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures. We present modeling results for the reprocessed radiation expected from magnetic flares above AGN accretion disks. Relativistic corrections for the orbital motion of the flare and for the curved space-time in the vicinity of the black hole are taken into account. We investigate the local emission spectra, as seen in a frame co-orbiting with the disk, and the observed spectra at infinity. We investigate long-term flares at different orbital phases and short-term flares for various global parameters of the accreting black hole. We discuss implications of a strong flare event observed in the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15 assuming that the emission is due to localized magnetic reconnection. We conduct detailed radiative transfer modeling of the reprocessed radiation for a primary source that is elevated above the disk. The model includes relativistic effects and Keplerian motion around the black hole. We show that for such a model setup the observed time-modulation must be intrinsic to the primary source. Using a simple analytical model we then investigate time delays between hard and soft X-rays during the flare. The model considers an intrinsic delay between primary and reprocessed radiation, which measures the geometrical distance of the flare source to the reprocessing sites. Using Monte-Carlo simulations of X-ray flare distributions across the accretion disk of active galactic nuclei (AGN), we obtain modeling results for the energy-dependent fractional variability amplitude. Referring to previous results of this model, we illustrate the relation between the shape of the point-to-point fractional variability spectrum, F_pp, and the time-integrated spectral energy distribution, F_E. We present a progress report on a project to derive the evolution of the volumetric supernova Type Ia rate from the Supernova Legacy Survey. Our preliminary estimate of the rate evolution divides the sample from Neill et al. (2006) into two redshift bins: 0.2 < z < 0.4, and 0.4 < z < 0.6. We extend this by adding a bin from the sample analyzed in Sullivan et al. (2006) in the range 0.6 < z < 0.75 from the same time period. We compare the derived trend with previously published rates and a supernova Type Ia production model having two components: one component associated closely with star formation and an additional component associated with host galaxy mass. Mkn 841 has been observed during 3 different periods (January 2001, January 2005 and July 2005) by XMM-Newton for a total cumulated exposure time of ~108 ks. We present in this paper a broad band spectral analysis of the complete EPIC-pn data sets. These observations confirm the presence of the strong soft excess and complex iron line profile known to be present in this source since a long time. They also reveal their extreme and puzzling spectral and temporal behaviors. Indeed, the 0.5-2 keV soft X-ray flux decreases by a factor 3 between 2001 and 2005 and the line shape appears to be a mixed of broad and narrow components, both variable but on differen timescales. The broad-band 0.5-10 keV spectra are well described by a model including a primary power law continuum, a blurred photoionized reflection and a narrow iron line, the blurred reflection fitting self-consistently the soft excess and the broad line component. The X-ray spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are complex and vary rapidly in time as seen in recent observations. Magnetic flares above the accretion disk can account for the extreme variability of AGN. They also explain the observed iron Kalpha fluorescence lines. We present radiative transfer modeling of the X-ray reflection due to emission from magnetic flares close to the marginally stable orbit. The hard X-ray primary radiation coming from the flare source illuminates the accretion disk. A Compton reflection/reprocessed component coming from the disk surface is computed for different emission directions. We assume that the density structure remains adjusted to the hydrostatic equilibrium without external illumination because the flare duration is only a quarter-orbit. The model takes into account the variations of the incident radiation across the hot spot underneath the flare source. The integrated spectrum seen by a distant observer is computed for flares at different orbital phases close to the marginally stable orbit of a Schwarzschild black hole and of a maximally rotating Kerr black hole. The calculations include relativistic and Doppler corrections of the spectra using a ray tracing technique. We study intermediate--z SNe Ia using the empirical physical diagrams which enable to learn about those SNe explosions. This information can be very useful to reduce systematic uncertainties of the Hubble diagram of SNe Ia up to high z. The study of the expansion velocities and the measurement of the ratio $\mathcal{R}$(\SiII) allow to subtype those SNe Ia as done for nearby samples. The evolution of this ratio as seen in the diagram $\mathcal{R}$(\SiII)--(t) together with $\mathcal{R}$(\SiII)$_{max}$ versus (B-V)$_{0}$ indicate consistency of the properties at intermediate z compared with local SNe. At intermediate--z, the expansion velocities of Ca II and Si II are similar to the nearby counterparts. This is found in a sample of 6 SNe Ia in the range 0.033$\leq z \leq$0.329 discovered within the {\it International Time Programme} (ITP) of {\it Cosmology and Physics with SNe Ia} during the spring of 2002. Those supernovae were identified using the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. Two SNe Ia at intermediate z were of the cool FAINT type, one being a SN1986G--like object highly reddened. The $\mathcal{R}$(\SiII) ratio as well as subclassification of the SNe Ia beyond templates help to place SNe Ia in their sequence of brightness and to distinguish between reddened and intrinsically red supernovae. This test can be done with very high z SNe Ia and it will help to reduce systematic uncertainties due to extinction by dust. We present a measurement of the distant Type Ia supernova rate derived from the first two years of the Canada -- France -- Hawaii Telescope Supernova Legacy Survey. We observed four one-square degree fields with a typical temporal frequency of ~ 4 observer-frame days over time spans of from 158 to 211 days per season for each field, with breaks during full moon. We used 8-10 meter-class telescopes for spectroscopic followup to confirm our candidates and determine their redshifts. Our starting sample consists of 73 spectroscopically verified Type Ia supernovae in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.6. We derive a volumetric SN Ia rate of r_V(=0.47) = 0.42^{+0.13}_{-0.09} (systematic) +- 0.06 (statistical) X 10^-4 yr^-1 Mpc^3, assuming h = 0.7, Omega_m = 0.3 and a flat cosmology. Using recently published galaxy luminosity functions derived in our redshift range, we derive a SN Ia rate per unit luminosity of r_L(=0.47) = 0.154^{+0.048}_{-0.033} (systematic) ^{+0.039}_{-0.031} (statistical) SNu. Using our rate alone, we place an upper limit on the component of SN Ia production that tracks the cosmic star formation history of 1 SN Ia per 10^3 M_sun of stars formed. [abridged] Extending the work of Czerny et al. (2004), we model the fractional variability amplitude due to distributions of hot spots co-orbiting on the accretion disk around a supermassive black hole. From defined radial distributions, our code samples random positions for the hot spots across the disk. The local spot emission is computed as reprocessed radiation coming from a compact primary source above the disk. The structure of the hot spot and the anisotropy of the re-emission are taken into account. We compute the fractional variability spectra expected from such spot ensembles and investigate dependencies on the parameters describing the radial spot distribution. We consider the fractional variability F_var with respect to the spectral mean and also the so-called point-to-point F_pp. Our method includes relativistic corrections for the curved space-time; the black hole angular momentum is a free parameter and subject to the fitting procedure. We confirm that the rms-variability spectra involve intrinsic randomness at a significant level when the number of flares appearing during the total observation time is too small. Furthermore, F_var is not always compatible with F_pp. For MCG -6-30-15, we can reproduce the short-timescale variability and model the suppressed variability in the energy range of the Kalpha line without any need to postulate reprocessing farther away from the center. An increasing rate of energy production by the flares toward the center of the disk, a fast rotation of the central black hole, and considerable suppression of the primary flare emission are required. (Abridged) Many active galactic nuclei exhibit X-ray features typical of the highly ionized gas called "Warm Absorber" (WA). Such a material appears to be stratified, displaying zones of different density, temperature, and ionization. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of modelling the WA gas in NGC 3783 as a single medium in total pressure equilibrium, in contrast to the current descriptions that are based on the presence of multiple regions, each in constant density. The assumption of total pressure equilibrium yields a more physical description of the WA, resulting in the natural stratification of the ionized gas, and providing an explanation for the presence of lines from different ionization states, as observed in WA spectra. We have used the photoionization code TITAN to compute a grid of constant total pressure models with the purpose of fitting the WA in NGC 3783. We have compared our models to the 900 ks Chandra spectrum of NGC 3783 and to previous studies where the WA was described by multiple zones of constant density. Our results show that the WA features in NGC 3783 can be well reproduced by a clumpy, ionized gas with cosmic abondances, ionization parameter = 2500 erg cm s^-1, column density = 4 10^22 cm^-2, and constant total pressure. We have shown that the WA in NGC3783 can be modelled by a single medium in total pressure equilibrium; this is probably the case for other WAs currently described by multi-zone, constant density models., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters

XMM-Newton observations aimed at determining for the first time the broad-band X-ray properties of the faint high galactic latitude Intermediate Polar UU Col are presented. We performed X-ray timing analysis in different energy ranges of the EPIC cameras which reveals the dominance of the 863s white dwarf rotational period. The spin pulse is strongly energy dependent. Weak variabilities at the beat 935s and at the 3.5hr orbital periods are also observed, but the orbital modulation is detected only below 0.5keV. Simultaneous UV and optical photometry shows that the spin pulse is anti-phased with respect to the hard X-rays. Analysis of the EPIC and RGS spectra reveals the complexity of the X-ray emission, being composed of a soft 50eV black--body component and two optically thin emission components at 0.2keV and 11keV strongly absorbed by dense material with an equivalent hydrogen column density of 10**(23)cm**(-2) partially (50%) covering the X-ray source. The complex X-ray and UV/optical temporal behaviour indicates that accretion occurs predominantly (80%) via a disc with a partial contribution (20%) directly from the stream. The main accreting pole dominates at high energies whilst the secondary pole mainly contributes in the soft X-rays and at lower energies. The bolometric flux ratio of the soft-to-hard X-ray emissions is found to be consistent with the prediction of the standard accretion shock model. We find the white dwarf in UU Col accretes at a low rate and possesses a low magnetic moment. The 2-10 keV continuum of AGN is generally well represented by a single power law. However, at smaller energies the continuum displays an excess with respect to the extrapolation of this power law, called the ''soft X-ray excess''. Until now this soft X-ray excess was attributed, either to reflection of the hard X-ray source by the accretion disk, or to the presence of an additional comptonizing medium, giving a steep spectrum. An alternative solution proposed by Gierlinski and Done (2004) is that a single power law well represents both the soft and the hard X-ray emission and the impression of the soft X-ray excess is due to absorption of a primary power law by a relativistic wind. We examine the advantages and drawbacks of reflection versus absorption models, and we conclude that the observed spectra can be well modeled, either by absorption (for a strong excess), or by reflection (for a weak excess). We present the first time resolved medium resolution optical spectroscopy of the recently identified peculiar Intermediate Polar (IP) 1RXSJ154814.5-452845, which allows us to precisely determine the binary orbital period (Porb=9.87+/-0.03hr) and the white dwarf spin period Pspin=693.01+/-0.06s). This system is then the third just outside the purported 6-10hr IP orbital period gap and the fifth of the small group of long period IPs, which has a relatively high degree of asynchronism. From the presence of weak red absorption features, we identify the secondary star with a spectral type K2+/-2V, which appears to have evolved on the nuclear timescale. From the orbital radial velocities of emission and the red absorption lines a mass ratio q=0.65+/-0.12 is found. The masses of the components are estimated to be Mwd >= 0.5Msun and Msec=0.4-0.79Msun and the binary inclination 25deg < i <=58deg . A distance between 540-840pc is estimated. At this distance, the presence of peculiar absorption features surrounding Balmer emissions cannot be due to the contribution of the white dwarf photosphere and their spin modulation suggests an origin in the magnetically confined accretion flow. The white dwarf is also not accreting at a particularly high rate (Mdot<5x10**16g/s), for its orbital period. The spin-to-orbit period ratio Pspin/Porb=0.02 and the low mass accretion rate suggest that this system is far from spin equilibrium. The magnetic moment of the accreting white dwarf is found to be < 4.1x10**32 Gcm**3, indicating a low magnetic field system., Comment: 10 pages, 8figures. We present distance measurements to 71 high redshift type Ia supernovae discovered during the first year of the 5-year Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). These events were detected and their multi-color light-curves measured using the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), by repeatedly imaging four one-square degree fields in four bands. Follow-up spectroscopy was performed at the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes to confirm the nature of the supernovae and to measure their redshift. With this data set, we have built a Hubble diagram extending to z=1, with all distance measurements involving at least two bands. Systematic uncertainties are evaluated making use of the multi-band photometry obtained at CFHT. Cosmological fits to this first year SNLS Hubble diagram give the following results : Omega_M = 0.263 +/- 0.042(stat) +/- 0.032(sys) for a flat LambdaCDM model; and w = -1.023 +/- 0.090(stat) +/- 0.054(sys) for a flat cosmology with constant equation of state w when combined with the constraint from the recent Sloan Digital Sky Survey measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations., Comment: (The SNLS Collaboration) 24 pages, 13 figures, Accepted in A&A. We report the first time-resolved photometric and spectroscopic optical observations of the X-ray source RX J2133.7+5107, identified in the ROSAT survey. A clear persistent optical light pulsation is discovered with fast photometry at a period of P_{omega} =(570.823 +/-0.013) s which we associate with the spin period of an accreting white dwarf. Radial velocity curves of the strong emission lines show modulation with a period of P_{Omega} =(7.193 +/- 0.016) hr, identified as the orbital period. These observations establish that the source is a member of the intermediate polar class (IPs) of magnetic cataclysmic variables. With only 4 IPs with longer orbital periods, RX J2133.7+5107 is among the widest systems. It is a unique IP with an orbital period in the middle of the so-called (6-10)hr IP gap and it shows a significant degree of asynchronism with a ratio P_{omega}/P_{Omega} of 0.02. When attributed to the motion of the white dwarf, the emission lines orbital modulation yields a mass function of f_m = (1.05 +/- 0.21) 10^{-2} Msun which, for a probable inclination i < 45 deg and a white dwarf mass M_{wd} = (0.6-1.0) Msun, corresponds to a secondary mass M_{s} > (0.27-0.37) Msun., Comment: 6 pages, 3 tables, 6 figures. accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present spectra of twelve Type Ia supernovae obtained in 1999 at the William Herschel Telescope and the Nordic Optical Telescope during a search for Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) at intermediate redshift. The spectra range from z=0.178 to z=0.493, including five high signal-to-noise ratio SN Ia spectra in the still largely unexplored range 0.15 < z < 0.3. Most of the spectra were obtained before or around restframe B-band maximum light. None of them shows the peculiar spectral features found in low-redshift over- or under-luminous SN Ia. Expansion velocities of characteristic spectral absorption features such as SiII at 6355 angs., SII at 5640 angs. and CaII at 3945 angs. are found consistent with their low-z SN Ia counterparts., Comment: 45 pages, 23 figures. We present optical spectra of the peculiar Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 1999ac. The data extend from -15 to +42 days with respect to B-band maximum and reveal an event that is unusual in several respects. Prior to B-band maximum, the spectra resemble those of SN 1999aa, a slowly declining event, but possess stronger SiII and CaII signatures (more characteristic of a spectroscopically normal SN). Spectra after B-band maximum appear more normal. The expansion velocities inferred from the Iron lines appear to be lower than average; whereas, the expansion velocity inferred from Calcium H and K are higher than average. The expansion velocities inferred from SiII are among the slowest ever observed, though SN 1999ac is not particularly dim. The analysis of the parameters v_10, R(SiII), dv(SiII)/dt, and d_m15 further underlines the unique characteristics of SN 1999ac. We find convincing evidence of CII 6580 in the day -15 spectrum with ejection velocity v > 16,000 km/s, but this signature disappears by day -9. Short-term variability of X-ray spectra has been reported for several Active Galactic Nuclei. Significant X-ray flux variations are observed within time scales down to 10^4 -- 10^5 seconds. We discuss short variability time scales in the framework of the X-ray flare model, which assumes the release of a large hard X-ray flux above a small portion of the accretion disk. The resulting observed X-ray spectrum is composed of the primary radiation as well as a reprocessed/Compton reflection component that we model performing numerical radiative transfer simulations. We report on the first pointed X-ray observations with XMM-Newton and RXTE satellites of the X-ray source RXJ0757.0+6306=HT Cam. We detect a strong 515s X-ray modulation confirming the optical photometric period found in 1998, which definitively assigns this source to the intermediate polar class of magnetic cataclysmic variables. The lack of orbital sidebands in the X-rays indicates that the X-ray period is the spin period of the accreting white dwarf. Simultaneous ultraviolet and optical B-band photometry acquired with the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor and coordinated optical UBVRI photometric data acquired at the Nordic Optical Telescope (La Palma) show that the optical pulse is in phase with the X-rays and hence originates in the magnetically confined accretion flow. The lack of ultraviolet spin modulation suggests that accretion-induced heating on the white dwarf surface is not important in this source. Spectral analyses of XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS spectra show that HT Cam has a multi-temperature spectrum and, contrary to most intermediate polars, it does not suffer from strong absorption. With its 86min orbital period, HT Cam is then the third confirmed system of this class below the 2-3hr period gap accreting at a low rate., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. We present the type Ia rate measurement based on two EROS supernova search campaigns (in 1999 and 2000). Sixteen supernovae identified as type Ia were discovered. The measurement of the detection efficiency, using a Monte Carlo simulation, provides the type Ia supernova explosion rate at a redshift ~ 0.13. The result is $0.125^{+0.044+0.028}_{-0.034-0.028} h_{70}^2$ SNu where 1 SNu = 1 SN / $10^{10} L_{sun}^B$ / century. This value is compatible with the previous EROS measurement (Hardin et al. 2000), done with a much smaller sample, at a similar redshift.
