In univariate analyses, the percentage of activated platelets was significantly and inversely correlated with the collection time (ie, the time of day blood samples were collected) (r = – 0.35, p = 0.001) and positively correlated to mean platelet volume (MPV) (r = 0.29, p = 0.008). A weaker positive correlation was also observed with ABO blood group (r = 0.228, p = 0.036). Analysis of the collection time as a categorical variable showed a greater degree of activated platelets in samples collected between 8:00 h and 10:00 h than in samples collected during the hours of > 10:00 h ≤ 14:00 h (2.5 ± 1.8 versus 1.1 ± 0.74, p < 0.001). In the adjusted linear regression model, collection time was a significant independent predictor of platelet activation state in whole blood (β = – 0.26; p < 0.001), as did ABO blood group (β = 0.55; p = 0.019).Conclusion: Our results show that collection time is the most important predictor of platelet activation state in pre-donation whole blood among platelet donors. Objective: Neonatal Hydronephrosis is a common abnormality diagnosed ante- or postnatally. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in neonates with antenatal or postnatal hydronephrosis and the value of ultrasonography as a noninvasive tool for VUR prediction. Methods: In a prospective study, 202 infants with neonatal hydronephrosis were studied. Two successive renal ultrasound examinations were performed at 1 and 4-6 weeks after birth in neonates with antenatal hydronephrosis or immediately after presentation. Voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) was performed in all infants. Findings: The incidence of VUR was 29.7%, of which 17.8% had severe (grade IV-V) reflux. 27% of 133 neonates with unilateral and 34.8% of 69 cases with bilateral hydronephrosis had VUR. Although a significant association was observed between severity of hydronephrosis and VUR, 5.9% of normal appearing and 7.8% of grade 1 hydronephrotic neonates had high-grade reflux. Conclusion: VUR was observed significantly in hydronephrotic neonates. A normal or mildly hydronephrotic urinary tract on ultrasound scan cannot exclude presence of severe VUR. Abstract Background The SF-12v2 is the improved version of the SF-12v1. This study aimed to validate the SF-12v2 in Iran. Methods A random sample of the general population aged 18 years and over living in Tehran, Iran completed the instrument. Reliability was estimated using internal consistency and validity was assessed using known-groups comparison and convergent validity. In addition the factor structure of the questionnaire was extracted by performing both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA). Results In all, 3685 individuals were studied (1887male and 1798 female). Internal consistency for both summary measures was satisfactory. Cronbach's α for the Physical Component Summary (PCS-12) was 0.87 and for the Mental Component Summary (MCS-12) it was 0.82. Known-groups comparison showed that the SF-12v2 discriminated well between men and women and those who differed in age and educational status (P < 0.05). Furthermore, as hypothesized the physical functioning, role physical, bodily pain and general health subscales correlated higher with the PCS-12, while the vitality, social functioning, role emotional and mental health subscales correlated higher with the MCS-12. Finally the exploratory factor analysis indicated a two-factor structure (physical and mental health) that jointly accounted for 59.9% of the variance. The confirmatory factory analysis also indicated a good fit to the data for the two-latent structure (physical and mental health). Conclusion Although the findings could not be generalized to the Iranian population, overall the findings suggest that the SF-12v2 is a reliable and valid measure of health related quality of life among Iranians and now could be used in future health outcome studies. However, further studies are recommended to establish its stability, responsiveness to change, and concurrent validity for this health survey in Iran.

Abstract Background The 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) as a shorter alternative of the SF-36 is largely used in health outcomes surveys. The aim of this study was to validate the SF-12 in Iran. Methods A random sample of the general population aged 15 years and over living in Tehran, Iran completed the SF-12. Reliability was estimated using internal consistency and validity was assessed using known groups comparison and convergent validity. In addition, the factor structure of the questionnaire was extracted by performing both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: In all, 5587 individuals were studied (2721 male and 2866 female). The mean age and formal education of the respondents were 35.1 (SD = 15.4) and 10.2 (SD = 4.4) years respectively. The results showed satisfactory internal consistency for both summary measures, that are the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and the Mental Component Summary (MCS); Cronbach's α for PCS-12 and MCS-12 was 0.73 and 0.72, respectively. Known-groups comparison showed that the SF-12 discriminated well between men and women and those who differed in age and educational status (P < 0.001). In addition, correlations between the SF-12 scales and single items showed that the physical functioning, role physical, bodily pain and general health subscales correlated higher with the PCS-12 score, while the vitality, social functioning, role emotional and mental health subscales more correlated with the MCS-12 score lending support to its good convergent validity. Finally the principal component analysis indicated a two-factor structure (physical and mental health) that jointly accounted for 57.8% of the variance. The confirmatory factory analysis also indicated a good fit to the data for the two-latent structure (physical and mental health). Conclusion In general the findings suggest that the SF-12 is a reliable and valid measure of health related quality of life among Iranian population. However, further studies are needed to establish stronger psychometric properties for this alternative form of the SF-36 Health Survey in Iran.

Abstract Background The Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales 2 (AIMS2) has not been translated and validated for Persian-speaking patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. This was to provide a validated instrument to measure functional disability and health-related quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee in Iran. The aim of this study was to culturally adapt and validate the AIMS2 for Persian-speaking patients with osteoarthritis of the knee in Iran. Methods A consecutive sample of patients with knee osteoarthritis were asked to complete the AIMS2, the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and four visual analog scales for pain, joint stiffness, patient's and physician's global assessment. Internal consistency and convergent validity were applied to examine psychometric properties of the AIMS2. In addition, 30 randomly selected patients were asked to complete the questionnaire two days later for the second time for test-retest reliability. Finally factor structure of the Persian AIMS2 was performed using the principal component factor analysis. Results In all 230 patients were entered into the study. The mean (SD) age of the participants was 56.9 (8.7) years and the mean (SD) duration of disease was 7.2 (3.5) years. Cronbach's alpha coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the Persian AIMS2 scales ranged from 0.74 to 0.92 and 0.85 to 0.96, respectively. The correlation between most of the Persian AIMS2 scales and the physical and mental summary scores of the SF-36 and the visual analogue scales for pain, joint stiffness, patient's and physician's global assessment were statistically significant indicating a good convergent validity (p < 0.05). The results obtained from factor analysis indicated three latent factors that jointly accounted for 67.5% of the total variance. Conclusion The results showed that the Persian AIMS2 had reasonably good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent validity in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. It is simple and easy to use and now can be applied in the future studies in Iran. However, its sensitivity to change needs still to be studied.

Objectives: This is a critical review of anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL). Most prior reviews focus on the aPL syndrome (APS), a thrombotic condition often marked by neurological disturbance. We bring to attention recent evidence that aPL may be equally relevant to non-thrombotic autoimmune conditions, notably, multiple sclerosis and ITP.Organization: After a brief history, the recent proliferation of aPL target antigens is reviewed. The implication is that many more exist. Theories of aPL in thrombosis are then reviewed, concluding that all have merit but that aPL may have more diverse pathological consequences than now recognized. Next, conflicting results are explained by methodological differences. The lupus anticoagulant (LA) is then discussed. LA is the best predictor of thrombosis, but why this is true is not settled. Finally, aPL in non-thrombotic disorders is reviewed.Conclusion: The current paradigm of aPL holds that they are important in thrombosis, but they may have much wider clinical significance, possibly of special interest in neurology. In this study, we aimed to follow up on the surprising increase in the incidence of orbital subperiosteal abscesses (SPA) reported in the Iranian pediatric population in the post-COVID era. Pediatric patients (≤ 18 years old) diagnosed with orbital SPA following acute sinusitis who were hospitalized between October 1st, 2023, and March 31st, 2024 in Farabi Eye Hospital, Tehran, Iran, were included. Demographic, clinical, microbiologic, and radiological characteristics of patients were reviewed. During the 6-month study period, 39 patients were admitted to our tertiary referral hospital. The average age of patients was 7.29 ± 4.13 years and 30 patients (76.92%) were male. The ethmoid sinus was involved in 100% of patients, and SPA involvement was in the medial wall in 27 patients (69.23%). The mean volume of SPA was 1.45 ± 1.77 cm 3 . Nineteen patients (48.72%) underwent surgical interventions, however, 20 patients (51.28%) received only medical treatment. The best corrected visual acuity of patients increased from 0.63 (0.20 LogMAR) on the first day of admission to 0.84 (0.07 LogMAR) according to the Snellen chart in the first month after treatment. Infectious waste disinfection is an essential process in medical waste management that may cause release of some pollutants. In this study, the PAHs concentration at the disinfection was investigated. The change in the release rate of PAHs in two including infectious waste reduction and increasing the segregation ratio was estimated. The results showed that the PAHs concentration was 1172 - 2066 ng/m 3 . The specific concentration of PAHs was 852 ng/ton of infectious waste in average. The annual emission of the PAHs resulting from infectious waste disinfection is estimated to be 612.6 kg. Reduction of infectious waste caused by redefining infectious waste and increasing the segregation ratio leads to reduction of PAHs concentration by 50%. Increasing the ratio of segregation and redefinition of infectious waste that led to reduced waste loading volume are essential measures that reduce the emissions of pollutants as by-products of disinfection.

Modifying biochar with nano-nutrients is one of the most effective methods in improving the efficiency of biochar in reducing the adverse effects of environmental stresses such as salinity on plant growth and productivity. The possible effects of solid biochar, nano-silicon dioxide enriched biochar, nano-calcium carbonate enriched biochar, and combined application of these enriched biochars on physiological performance of safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius L.) were evaluated under different levels of salt stress (non-saline, 6 and 12 dSm -1 ). Salt stress increased sodium content, reactive oxygen species generation, and antioxidant enzymes activity, but decreased potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, silicon, photosynthetic pigments, leaf water content, and seed yield (by about 36%) of safflower plants. The addition of biochar forms to the saline soil improved growth (up to 24.6%) and seed yield (up to 37%) of safflower by reducing sodium accumulation (by about 32%) and ROS generation and enhancing nutrient uptake, photosynthetic pigments, and water contents of leaves. The combined forms of enriched biochars were the best treatment on reducing salt stress effects on safflower plants. Therefore, application of enriched biochars has a high potential to reduce the harmful effects of salt stress on plants.

Optimum use of fertilizer plays an important role in increasing the performance of traits in rice and other agricultural products. The use of nano-fertilizers can be very important in the optimal use of fertilizer and in increasing the quantity and quality of agricultural products. To investigate the effect of iron and zinc nano-fertilizers on the physiological and morphological characteristics of rice plants (Tarom Hashemi variety) under drought stress conditions, a split plot experiment was carried out in the form of a randomized complete block design in three replications in Mazandaran region. The results of the combined analysis indicated that the effect of iron nano-fertilizer and zinc nano-fertilizer has a significant difference at the level of 0.01 and 0.05 in terms of all the evaluated traits. In the means comparison, it was concluded that normal humidity conditions can have a positive effect on the performance of the traits, but in the S1 stress conditions (drought stress at the rate of 50% of normal irrigation), the traits showed a good performance trend. Furthermore, increasing the amount of iron nano-fertilizer at the F2 level (Iron sulphate 100 kg/ha + 1 foliar spraying of iron chelate 2%) can be very effective in the growth of yield and the desirability of traits. In examining the amount of zinc nano-fertilizer consumption on the traits, showed the most positive performance on the traits at the level of Z2 (Use of 5 mg of zinc nano-fertilizer per kg of experiment soil), but with the increase to the level of Z3 (Use 7.5 mg of zinc nano-fertilizer per kg of experiment soil), this favorability was greatly reduced. The result of the correlation coefficients between the traits and the correlation diagram also showed a positive and significant correlation between the traits. In the graphical analysis, treatments tr33, tr8, tr19, tr24, tr7, tr6, and tr2 were selected as desirable treatments from the polygon graph. Treatments tr19, tr9 and tr6 were recognized as favourable treatments in terms of the treatment ranking diagram in terms of all traits. Based on the treatment selection diagram based on ideal treatment, tr19, tr9 and tr6 treatments were identified as desirable treatments. In general, it is possible to use tr19 (S1×F1×Z2), tr6 (N×F1×Z1) and tr9 (N×F2×Z0) treatments as treatments with high efficiency and power to increase the performance of traits and optimal use of nano-fertilizers in rice cultivation.

Background: Stem cell transplantation is a clinical approach used to treat certain types of cancers, such as hematologic malignancies. Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) occurs in 30-70% of cases and often diminishes the quality of life of transplant patients. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of vaginal complications of GVHD following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation., Methods: This study employed an analytical cross-sectional design. All patients referred to Shariati Hospital in Tehran between 2019 and 2020 who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation were considered for inclusion in this study if they met the inclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria encompassed nonnot sexually active women aged 18-70 who received stem cell transplantation more than 100 days prior. Exclusion criteria comprised patients who experienced GVHD during the first 100 days posttransplantation. Additionally, individuals over 75 and patients with metastatic cancer were excluded., Results: A total of 55 patients were recruited, with ages averaging 40±9.9 years for recipients and 38.5±12.8 years for donors. Notably, 63.3 and 58.2% of patients exhibited oral and ocular symptoms, respectively. Regarding genital involvement, 49.1% experienced vaginal symptoms, while 25.5% had vulvar involvement. Among the 27 patients with vaginal involvement, two (7.4%) were categorized as mild, 17 (63%) as moderate, and eight (29.6%) as severe. Univariate analysis identified reduced vaginal discharge [odds ratio (OR=6.56)], vaginal tightness (OR=6.23), pelvic pain (OR=5.50), and vaginal involvement (OR=3.81) as significant predictors of other organ symptoms. Moreover, vaginal involvement (OR=3.68) emerged as the sole significant predictor of the cooccurrence of oral, ocular, and other organ symptoms. Background: Astaxanthin is the most prevalent carotenoid in the marine environment and is widely used as an additive in formulated aquafeeds., Objectives: A 60-day feeding trial was conducted to consider the effect of dietary nanoliposome-coated astaxanthin (NA) on haematological parameters, serum antioxidant activities and immune responses of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss., Methods: A total of 450 healthy fish weighing 31.00 ± 2.09 g were randomly assigned in triplicate (30 fish per replicate) to 5 dietary treatments: 0 (control), 25.00, 50.00, 75.00, and 100.00 mg kg -1 NA., Results: Fish fed the diet supplemented with 50.00 mg kg -1 NA exhibited the highest values of red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin and haematocrit of 1.64 ± 0.01 × 10 6  mm -3 , 5.54 ± 0.21 × 10 3  mm -3 , 8.73 ± 0.24 g dL -1 and 46.67% ± 0.88%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those fed the basal diet (p < 0.05). The lowest and highest percentages of lymphocytes (67.67% ± 0.33%) and neutrophils (27.33% ± 1.20%) were also obtained in fish fed 50.00 mg kg -1 NA compared to those fed the basal diet (p < 0.05). Fish receiving diet supplemented with 50.00 mg kg -1 NA revealed the highest serum activity in superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, lysozyme and alternative complement and the lowest level of total cholesterol, cortisol, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase than fish receiving the basal diet (p < 0.05). Serum immunoglobulin (Ig) and ACH50 contents significantly increased with increasing dietary NA supplementation to the highest values of 43.17 ± 1.46 and 293.33 ± 2.03 U mL -1 , respectively, in fish fed diet supplemented with 50 mg kg -1 NA (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Supplementation of NA in rainbow trout diet at 50 mg kg -1 exhibited a positive effect on haematological parameters, antioxidant capacity and immune responses. Administration of such dosage can enhance rainbow trout immune responses against unfavourable or stressful conditions, for example disease outbreaks, hypoxic condition, thermal stress and sudden osmotic fluctuations, which usually happen in an intensive culture system., (© 2024 The Authors. The modeling and mapping of hotspots and coldspots ecosystem services (ESs) is an essential factor in the decision-making process for ESs conservation. Moreover, spatial prioritization is a serious stage in conservation planning. In the present research, based on the InVEST software, Getis-Ord statistics (G i * ), and a set of GIS methods, we quantified and mapped the variation and overlapping among three ESs (carbon storage, soil retention, and habitat quality). Furthermore, an approach was proffered for detecting priority areas to protect multiple ecosystem services. Hotspots recognized via the G i * statistics technique contain a higher capacity for supplying ESs than other areas. This means that protecting these areas with a bigger number of overlapped hotspots can provide more services. Results indicated that population growth accompanied by the increase in construction sites and low-yield agricultural lands in the Zayanderood dam watershed basin has resulted in ES losses. This situation is represented by increasing soil erosion, reduced carbon storage, reduced biodiversity, and fragmented habitat distribution due to land-use change. The statistically significant carbon storage, soil retention, and habitat quality hotspots with above 95% confidence level account for 21.5%, 39.3%, and 16.9% of the study area, respectively. Therefore, a clear framework was presented in this study for setting ES-based conservation priority. Rhizobia are bacteria that form nitrogen-fixing nodules in legume plants. The sets of genes responsible for both nodulation and nitrogen fixation are carried in plasmids or genomic islands that are often mobile. Different strains within a species sometimes have different host specificities, while very similar symbiosis genes may be found in strains of different species. These specificity variants are known as symbiovars, and many of them have been given names, but there are no established guidelines for defining or naming them. Here, we discuss the requirements for guidelines to describe symbiovars, propose a set of guidelines, provide a list of all symbiovars for which descriptions have been published so far, and offer a mechanism to maintain a list in the future.

Background: Graft failure (GF) is a rare but serious complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Prevention of graft failure remains the most advisable approach as there is no clear recommendation for the best strategies for reversing this complication. Administration of growth factor, additional hematopoietic progenitor boost, or a salvage HSCT are current modalities recommended for the treatment of GF. Autologous recovery without evidence of disease relapse occurs rarely in patients with GF, and in the absence of autologous recovery, further salvage transplantation following a second conditioning regimen is a potential treatment option that offers the best chances of long-term disease-free survival. The preconditioning regimens of second HSCT have a significant impact on engraftment and outcome, however, currently there is no consensus on optimal conditioning regimen for second HSCT in patients who have developed GF. Furthermore, a second transplant from a different donor or the same donor is still a matter of debate., Observations: We present our experience in managing pediatric patients with acute leukemia who encountered graft failure following stem cell transplantation., Conclusions and Relevance: Although a second transplantation is almost the only salvage method, we illustrate that some pediatric patients with acute leukemia who experience graft failure after an allogeneic stem cell transplant using Myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimen may achieve long-term disease-free survival through autologous hematopoiesis recovery., (© 2024. The biodiversity of an ecosystem is greatly influenced by the spatio-temporal pattern of the landscape. Understanding how landscape type affects habitat quality (HQ) is important for maintaining environmental and ecological sustainability, preserving biodiversity, and guaranteeing ecological health. This research examined the relationship between the HQ and landscape pattern. The study presented an interpretation of the biodiversity variation associated with the landscape pattern in the Zayanderud Dam watershed area by integrating the Land Change Modeler and the InVEST model. Landsat images and maximum likelihood classification were used to analyze the spatio-temporal characteristics of the landscape pattern in 1991 and 2021. The future landscape pattern in 2051 was simulated using a Land Change Modeler. Subsequently, the InVEST model and the landscape maps were used to identify the spatial distribution of HQ and its changes over three periods. The mean values of the HQ in the study area were 0.601, 0.489, and 0.391, respectively, demonstrating a decreasing trend. The effect of landscape pattern change on HQ was also assessed based on landscape metrics, including PD, NP, SHDI, and CONTAG. HQ had a significant positive correlation with the CONTAG parameter (R = 0.78). Additionally, it had a significant inverse correlation with NP (R = - 0.83), PD (R = - 0.61), and SHDI (R = - 0.42). The results showed that the habitats in the northern region had lower quality compared to those in the southern parts of the Zayanderud Dam watershed. The density, diversity, and connectivity of landscape patches significantly influence the HQ in the study area. This research has the potential to enhance understanding of the impacts of land change patterns on biodiversity and establish a scientific basis for the conservation of natural habitats. Background: Among neurological diseases, multiple sclerosis (MS) affects mostly young adults and can cause long-term disability. While most medications with approval from regulatory agencies are very effective in treating MS disease, they are unable to repair the tissue damage found in the central nervous system (CNS). Consequently, Cell-based therapy particularly using mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs), holds promise for neuroprotection and tissue repair in MS treatment. Furthermore, placenta-derived MSCs (PLMSCs) have shown the potential to treat MS due to their abundance, noninvasive isolation from discarded tissues, no ethical problems, anti-inflammatory, and reparative properties. Accordingly, good manufacturing practices (GMPs) plays a crucial part in clinical SCs manufacturing. The purpose of our article is to discuss GMP-grade PLMSC protocols for treating MS as well as other clinical applications., Methods and Results: Placental tissue obtained of a healthy donor during the caesarean delivery and PLMSCs isolated by GMP standards. Flow cytometry was used to assess the expression of the CD markers CD34, CD105, CD90, and CD73 in the MSCs and the mesodermal differentiation ability was evaluated. Furthermore, Genetic evaluation of PLMSCs was done by G-banded karyotyping and revealed no chromosomal instability. In spite of the anatomical origin of the starting material, PLMSCs using this method of culture were maternal in origin., Conclusions: We hope that our protocol for clinical manufacturing of PLMSCs according to GMP standards will assist researchers in isolating MSCs from placental tissue for clinical and pre-clinical applications., (© 2024. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic value of [ 68 Ga] Ga-Pentixafor in malignant melanoma patients., Methods: In this prospective study, patients with histology-proven melanoma were included and underwent [ 18 F]fluoro-D-glucose ([ 18 F]FDG) and [ 68 Ga] Ga-Pentixafor PET/computed tomography (CT) within a week. Suspicious lesions were interpreted as benign vs. malignant, and the corresponding semi-quantitative PET/CT parameters were recorded and compared., Results: Twelve consecutive melanoma patients (mean age: 60 ± 6) were included. Two patients were referred for initial staging, two for detecting recurrence and eight for evaluating the extent of metastases. Overall, [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT showed 236 tumoral lesions, including two primary tumors, two recurrent lesions, 29 locoregional metastases and 203 distant metastases. In [ 68 Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT, 101 tumoral lesions were detected, including two primary tumors, one recurrence, 16 locoregional metastases and 82 distant metastases. Notably, a documented brain metastasis was only visualized on [ 68 Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT images. Compared with [ 18 F]FDG, [ 68 Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT provided a 42% detection rate. Regarding semi-quantitative measures, the intensity of uptake and tumor-to-background ratios were significantly lower on [ 68 Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT [average maximum standard uptake value (SUV max ) of 2.72 ± 1.33 vs. 11.41 ± 14.79; P value <0.001 and 1.17 ± 0.53 vs. 5.32 ± 7.34; P value <0.001, respectively]., Conclusion: When comparing [ 68 Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT with [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT, not only did [ 68 Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT detect fewer lesions, but the intensity of uptake and the TBRs were also lower on [ 68 Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT. Thus, our results may indicate a limited potential of this novel tracer in cutaneous melanoma patients compared to [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT. Introduction: Donor choosing remains to play a pivotal role in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Numerous criteria beyond HLA compatibility impact the selection of a suitable donor., Methods: We evaluated the effect of donor parity on transplant outcomes in a large homogeneously treated population that received an HLA-matched allo-HSCT between 2010 and 2021 at our center. All patients were transplanted from a peripheral blood stem cell source following a myeloablative Busulfan-based conditioning and an identical protocol for graftversus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis regimen., Results: A total of 1103 allo-HSCT recipients were included. 188 (17%) had transplants from parous female donors, whereas 621 (56.30%) and 294 (26.70%) received transplants from male and nulliparous female donors, respectively. HSCTs from parous female donors compared to male and nulliparous females were associated with a significantly higher incidence of grade III-IV acute (a) GVHD (55.27% vs. 11.34 and 10.84%) and extensive chronic (c) GVHD (64.32% vs. 15.52 and 13.65%), as well as lower relapse incidence (RI)., Discussion: This study finds that while parous female donors are associated with higher incidences of grade III-IV aGVHD and extensive cGVHD post-allo-HSCT, the advantages, such as a lower RI, outweigh the risks. Systemic inflammation can cause chronic neuroinflammation, which is a significant risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders. Therefore, anti-inflammatory agents that reduce peripheral inflammation are potential targets for the prevention or treatment of these debilitating diseases. In the present study, we investigated whether gamma-oryzanol (ORY) could protect against chronic neuroinflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in adult male mice. Mice were injected with LPS (0.75 mg/kg/day) or saline for 7 consecutive days and orally received ORY (100 mg/kg) or vehicle for 14 days (7 days before LPS injections and 7 days co-treated with LPS). After two weeks, mice were subjected to behavioral assessments using the Morris water maze and Y-maze. Moreover, the expression level of several inflammatory mediators was measured in the hippocampus of treated animals. Also, neuronal loss, microglia, and astrocyte densities were evaluated in the CA1 and CA3 hippocampus. We found that ORY treatment significantly improved spatial and working memory in LPS-treated mice. This behavioral improvement was accompanied by a significant reduction in the number of microglia and astrocytes in the CA1 and CA3 hippocampus. Moreover, ORY treatment effectively prevented LPS-induced increases in the expression of inflammatory mediators and enhanced neuronal survival in the CA1 hippocampus. Plant invasions can have major impacts on ecosystems, both above- and belowground. In particular, invasions by legumes, which often host nitrogen-fixing symbionts (rhizobia), are known to modify soil bacterial communities. Here, we examined the effect of the invasive herbaceous legume Lupinus polyphyllus on the alpha diversity and community composition of soil bacteria. We also explored the relationships between these bacterial communities and vegetation cover, the cover of other (non-invasive) legumes, or the number of vascular plants present. For this, we sampled rhizosphere soil and surveyed vegetation from ten paired sites (uninvaded versus invaded more than 10 years ago) in southwestern Finland, and identified bacterial DNA using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The presence of the plant invader and the three vegetation variables considered had no effect on the alpha diversity of soil bacteria in terms of bacterial richness or Shannon and Inverse Simpson diversity indices. However, the composition of soil bacterial communities differed between invaded and uninvaded soils at four out of the ten sites. Interestingly, the relative abundances of the top bacterial families in invaded and uninvaded soils were inconsistent across sites, including for legume-associated rhizobia in the family Bradyrhizobiaceae . Other factors-such as vegetation cover, legume cover (excluding L. polyphyllus ), number of plant species-also explained a small proportion of the variation in bacterial community composition. Background:  Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with hematological malignancies. Given the considerable prevalence and consequences of IFIs, hence revealing the exact cause of fungal infections, their rate, associated risk factors, and complications could contribute to reducing both financial and life costs, choosing targeted antifungal treatment, and avoiding unnecessary toxic treatments in individuals who are not suffering from mycoses. Materials and Methods:  This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the first semester of 2019. All patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) admitted to Dr. Shariati Hospital were studied. Only those with probable/proven IFIs defined according to the last update of EORTC/MSG criteria were included in the study. The demographic and clinical data were recorded from the hospital information registration system using a questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 24. Results: Out of 1109 HM patients hospitalized during the study period, 67 (6.04%) IFIs were diagnosed. Of these, 57 (85.04%) were aspergillosis, 7 (10.4%) were mucormycosis, and 3 patients developed other fungal infections. Males constituted 67.2% of the entire IFI population. The mean±SD age of the samples was 43.16 ± 13.8 years. The most common type of malignancy was AML. Lung imaging showed lesions associated with fungal infections in 52 cases (77.6%), with multiple nodules as the most prevalent pattern being observed in 64.2% of cases. Sinus involvement was evidenced in the PNS CT scan of 46 (68.6%) patients. The attributable mortality rate for IFIs was 62.7%. Both the types of IFI and malignancies had no significant relationship with the outcome of patients. Central venous catheter, mucositis, and antibiotic use were the most frequent risk factors. Conclusion:   IFI represents a frequent complication for HM patients with high mortality. Aspergillus species are the predominant etiology in these settings. While exagamglogene autotemcel (Casgevy) and lovotibeglogene autotemcel (Lyfgenia) have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first cell-based gene therapies for the treatment of patients 12 years of age and older with sickle cell disease (SCD), this treatment is not universally accessible. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) has the potential to eradicate the symptoms of patients with SCD, but a significant obstacle in HSCT for SCD is the availability of suitable donors, particularly human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched related donors. Furthermore, individuals with SCD face an elevated risk of complications during stem cell transplantation due to SCD-related tissue damage, endothelial activation, and inflammation. Therefore, it is imperative to consider optimal conditioning regimens and investigate HSCT from alternative donors. Breast cancer is a hormone-dependence and heterogenic disease. Drug resistance is the main reason for the failure of breast cancer treatment. Combinatory medications are methods for treatment but they are not sufficient in action. However, new approaches like molecular therapy reveal a new insight into cancer treatment. Studies show that Bcl-2 gene family inhibitors and ER blockers cause the improvement of recovery. Interfering molecules such as antisense ones can inhibit the expression of Bcl-2 and push the cancer cells to apoptosis. Our team designed a new Antisense Oligonucleotide (ASO) based on Antisense oligo G3139. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines were used to evaluate cellular proliferation. Liposomes and cationic nano-complex (Niosome) are used to increase the cellular delivery of ASO and Tamoxifen. We also investigated the cytotoxicity and apoptotic effects of Tamoxifen, naked ASO and Nano-packed ASO. The results indicated significant down-regulation of the Bcl-2 gene and inhibition of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cellular proliferation. Flow-cytometry showed early apoptosis in all cell groups. The newly designed ASO reduced the expression of the Bcl-2 gene. It also had a synergistic effect with the Tamoxifen. The cationic nano-complex (Niosome) was more efficient than the liposome in delivering designed oligo antisense Bcl-2 in the cancer cells.

Background & Aims: Malnutrition is common in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients. However, there are few studies on the association between malnutrition and post-transplant outcomes, with inconsistent results. No standard screening tool has been established for malnutrition in these patients. Previous research suggests the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria is effective in predicting outcomes in other cancers. This study investigates the link between malnutrition based on the GLIM criteria with mortality and complications following allogeneic HSCT., Methods: This single-center, observational, longitudinal, and prospective study of 98 adult leukemia patients at the Hematology Center of Shariati Hospital in Tehran, Iran, monitored patients before transplantation until 100 days after the procedure, focusing on overall survival and mortality as a primary outcome, and secondary endpoints including oral mucositis, acute GVHD, infection during hospitalization, and readmission rates., Results: This study involved 98 allogeneic HSCT patients with a median age of 38 years old, 64.3 % with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and 35.7 % with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Among them, 26.5 % were categorized as malnourished based on GLIM criteria. During 100 days of follow-up, 13 patients died, but there was no significant difference in overall survival and mortality between malnourished and well-nourished patients. Malnourished patients demonstrated a noticeable upward trend in the incidence of oral mucositis, hospital readmission, and infection during their hospitalization. Cerium-based UiO-66 (Ce-UiO-66) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized via a facile solvothermal method and fully characterized using FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM, EDX, and zeta potential techniques. The synthesized Ce-UiO-66 particles were embedded into an electrospun cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan (CTS) nanofiber (EPCNF), and then employed to remove organic dyes from water. The adsorption results demonstrated that the adsorption capacities of both anionic (Congo Red (CR), Methyl Orange (MO) and Methyl Red (MR)) and cationic (Methylene Blue (MB)) dyes over the fabricated electrospun nanofibers (ENFs) increased with increasing the loadings of Ce-UiO-66 MOFs. Accordingly, the adsorption performance of EPCNF-10 (containing 10 wt% of Ce-UiO-66 MOFs) adsorbent toward these organic dyes is in the order of CR (102.04 mg/g) > MO (87.71 mg/g) > MR (65.35 mg/g) > MB (34.24 mg/g). Moreover, it was found that the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model were appropriate for describing the adsorption behaviors of EPCNF-10 adsorbent toward both anionic and cationic dyes. Human cerebral organoids (COs) are self-organizing three-dimensional (3D) neural structures that provide a human-specific platform to study the cellular and molecular processes that underlie different neurological events. The first step of CO generation from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) is neural induction, which is an in vitro simulation of neural ectoderm development. Several signaling pathways cooperate during neural ectoderm development and in vitro differentiation of hPSCs toward neural cell lineages is also affected by them. In this study, we considered some of the known sources of these variable signaling cues arising from cell culture media components and sought to modulate their effects by applying a comprehensive combination of small molecules and growth factors for CO generation. Histological analysis demonstrated that these COs recapitulate the neural progenitor zone and early cortical layer organization, containing different types of neuronal and glial cells which was in accordance with single-nucleus transcriptome profiling results. Moreover, patch clamp and intracellular Ca 2+ dynamic studies demonstrated that the COs behave as a functional neural network. Thus, this method serves as a facile protocol for generating hPSC-derived COs that faithfully mimic the features of their in vivo counterparts in the developing human brain. Background: Previous studies have shown that malnutrition before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is associated with poor patient prognoses. There is inconsistency among studies on which nutritional status screening tool is appropriate for malnutrition diagnosis before allo-HSCT. The present study aimed to compare nutritional screening tools in patients with leukemia before allo-HSCT., Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, and single-center study was conducted in Tehran, Iran. One hundred four adults allo-HSCT candidates aged 18-55 years with leukemia were selected sequentially. Malnutrition assessment was done using three tools, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM), nutritional risk screening 2002 (NRS-2002) and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) criteria. The agreement between malnutrition assessment tools was evaluated with Cohen's kappa., Results: The agreement between GLIM and NRS-2002 was perfect (κ = 0.817, p < 0.001), while the agreement between GLIM and ESPEN was fair (κ = 0.362, p < 0.001). The agreement between NRS-2002 and ESPEN was fair (κ = 0.262, p < 0.001). We also found a moderate agreement for all tools (κ = 0.489, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: NRS-2002 is an accepted tool for screening malnutrition in hospitalized patients. In the current study, the GLIM criterion perfectly agreed with the NRS-2002. Aim: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a common age-related neurodegenerative disorder with a rising prevalence. Human pluripotent stem cells have emerged as the most promising source of cells for midbrain dopaminergic (mDA) neuron replacement in PD. This study aimed to generate transplantable mDA progenitors for treatment of PD., Materials and Methods: Here, we optimized and fine-tuned a differentiation protocol using a combination of small molecules and growth factors to induce mDA progenitors to comply with good manufacturing practice (GMP) guidelines based on our clinical-grade human embryonic stem cell (hESC) line., Key Findings: The resulting mDA progenitors demonstrated robust differentiation and functional properties in vitro. Background: Neonatal intestinal obstruction is a challenging issue, especially in developing countries. There is an apparent difference in the etiology, complications, and mortality of intestinal obstruction in neonates in different countries., Objectives: We aimed to describe the causes, early postoperative outcomes, and predictors of morbidities in neonates with intestinal obstruction in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Iran., Design & Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on neonates who were admitted with intestinal obstruction requiring surgery in the NICU of Boo-Ali Sina Hospital in northern Iran during 2018 to 2022. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the newborns, final diagnosis, postoperative complications, and mortality rate were documented. Also, the relationship between postoperative complications and risk factors, including birth weight, gestational age, and surgical intervention time, was evaluated., Results: A total of 169 neonates with intestinal obstruction requiring surgery were admitted with a male ratio of 60.9% and mean age of 3.85 ± 8.01 days. Imperforate anus with a prevalence of 42% was the most common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction, followed by Hirschsprung's disease and duodenal atresia. Death after surgery occurred in 4.1% of the patients. Sepsis with a prevalence of 1.4% was the most common early postoperative complication. The late surgical intervention had a statistically significant relationship with the increase in postoperative sepsis ( P  = .048)., Conclusion: The time of surgical intervention is the main predictor of complications in neonatal intestinal obstruction, so prompt diagnosis and timely treatment of these babies can significantly improve the prognosis. Background: The accurate identification and isolation of ovarian stem cells from mammalian ovaries remain a major challenge because of the lack of specific surface markers and suitable in vitro culture systems. Optimized culture conditions for in vitro expansion of ovarian stem cells would allow for identifying requirements of these stem cells for proliferation and differentiation that would pave the way to uncover role of ovarian stem cells in ovarian pathophysiology. Here, we used three-dimensional (3D) aggregate culture system for enrichment of ovarian stem cells and named them aggregate-derived stem cells (ASCs). We hypothesized that mimicking the ovarian microenvironment in vitro by using an aggregate model of the ovary would provide a suitable niche for the isolation of ovarian stem cells from adult mouse and human ovaries and wanted to find out the main cellular pathway governing the proliferation of these stem cells., Results: We showed that ovarian aggregates take an example from ovary microenvironment in terms of expression of ovarian markers, hormone secretion and supporting the viability of the cells. We found that aggregates-derived stem cells proliferate in vitro as long-term while remained expression of germline markers. These ovarian stem cells differentiated to oocyte like cells in vitro spontaneously. Transplantation of these stem cells in to chemotherapy mouse ovary could restore ovarian structure. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that interleukin6 is upregulated pathway in ovarian aggregate-derived stem cells. Our data showed that JAK/Stat3 signaling pathway which is activated downstream of IL6 is critical for ovarian stem cells proliferation., Conclusions: We developed a platform that is highly reproducible for in vitro propagation of ovarian stem cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of gallic acid (GA) and essential oil (EO) of Anethum graveolens L. seed (forms of nanoliposome and free) on bacteriological, chemical and sensory properties of minced meat during storage. In this research, Escherichia coli (gram negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (gram positive) were used to examine the effect of these compounds on meat. The particle sizes (z-average diameter) of prepared nanoliposomes of EO and GA were in the range of 141 to 165 nm and 146-160 nm, respectively and the efficiency of encapsulation (EE %) in the current research was 51.76-69.8% in nano EO (NEO) and 53.23-67.07% in nano gallic acid ( N -GA). Also, the outcomes indicated the treatment containing nano-liposomes had a better antimicrobial effect in both of bacteria. In present study, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of GA, N -GA, EO and NEO for S. aureus was 0.62 ± 0.01, 0.62 ± 0.02, 0.62 ± 0.01 and 0.62 ± 0.01 mg/mL, respectively, and for E. coli was 0.62 ± 0.01, 0.62 ± 0.01, 1.25 ± 0.1 and 1.25 ± 0.1 mg/mL, respectively. Also, the results showed MBC (The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration) of GA, N -GA, EO and NEO for S. aureus was 0.62 ± 0.02, 0.62 ± 0.03, 1.25 ± 0.1 and 1.25 ± 0.1 mg/mL, respectively, and for E. coli was0.62 ± 0.01, 1.25 ± 0.1, 2.5 ± 0.2, 2.5 ± 0.2 mg/mL, respectively. The highest and lowest of 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging were detected, in the Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) 200 and EO1%, respectively. Furthermore, after 18 day, minimum pH and Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) value were related to the N-GA2% on S. aureus with pH = 6.5 and NEO group (27 mg N/100 g), respectively. Finally, the treatment of NEO showed a higher acceptance score of sensory evaluation after 18 days. In order to study the local interactions between facial soft-tissues and a Silhouette Soft ® suspension suture, a CE marked medical device designed for the repositioning of soft tissues in the face and the neck, Finite element simulations were run, in which a model of the suture was embedded in a three-layer Finite Element structure that accounts for the local mechanical organization of human facial soft tissues. A 2D axisymmetric model of the local interactions was designed in ANSYS, in which the geometry of the tissue, the boundary conditions and the applied loadings were considered to locally mimic those of human face soft tissue constrained by the suture in facial tissue repositioning. The Silhouette Soft suture is composed of a knotted thread and sliding cones that are anchored in the tissue. Hence, simulating these interactions requires special attention for an accurate modelling of contact mechanics. As tissue is modelled as a hyper-elastic material, the displacement of the facial soft tissue changes in a nonlinear way with the intensity of stress induced by the suture and the number of the cones. Our simulations show that for a 4-cone suture a displacement of 4.35 mm for a 2.0 N external loading and of 7.6 mm for 4.0 N. Increasing the number of cones led to the decrease in the equivalent local strain (around 20%) and stress (around 60%) applied to the tissue.
