Search

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a state of matter characterized by fractionalized quasiparticle excitations, quantum entanglement, and a lack of long-range magnetic order. However, QSLs have evaded definitive experimental observation. Several Yb$^{3+}$-based triangular lattice antiferromagnets with effective $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ have been suggested to stabilize the QSL state as the ground state. Here, we build a comprehensive magnetic temperature phase diagram of a high-quality single crystalline KYbSe$_2$ via heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect down to 30 mK with magnetic field applied along the $a$-axis. At zero magnetic field, we observe the magnetic long-range order at $T_N$ = 0.29 K entering 120 degrees ordered state in heat capacity, consistent with neutron scattering studies. Analysis of the low-temperature ($T$) specific heat ($C$) at zero magnetic field indicates linear $T$-dependence of $C/T$ and a broad hump of $C/T$ in the proximate QSL region above $T_N$. By applying magnetic field, we observe the up-up-down phase with 1/3 magnetization plateau and oblique phases, in addition to two new phases. These observations strongly indicate that while KYbSe$_2$ closely exhibits characteristics resembling an ideal triangular lattice, deviations may exist, such as the effect of the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction, calling for careful consideration for spin Hamiltonian modeling. Further investigations into tuning parameters, such as chemical pressure, could potentially induce an intriguing QSL phase in the material.

UTe2 is a newly discovered unconventional superconductor, where electron Cooper pairs combine into a spin-triplet ground state. Here we report the specific heat C(H,T) of a high-quality single crystal of UTe2 with a single specific heat anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature T_c {\approx} 2 K and a small zero-field residual Sommerfeld coefficient {\gamma}_0 = C/T (T=0) = 10 mJ/mol-K^2. We applied magnetic field up to 12 T along the three principal crystallographic axes of UTe2 to probe the nature of the superconducting state. The evolution of the residual Sommerfeld coefficient as a function of magnetic field, {\gamma}_0 (H), is highly anisotropic and reveals distinct regions. In magnetic field up to 4 T applied along a, b, and c axes, we find {\gamma}_0{\approx}{\alpha}_i {\square}H, with i=a,b,c, as expected for an unconventional superconductor with nodes (zeros) of the superconducting order parameter on the Fermi surface. A pronounced kink in {\gamma}_0(H), however, is observed at roughly 4 T for field applied along both a and b axes, whereas a smooth change from square-root to linear behaviour is observed at 4 T for H//c. These results strongly indicate that a zero-field ground state is stable up to 4 T and undergoes a field-induced evolution above 4 T. {\alpha_c} > {\alpha_a} > {\alpha_b}, indicating that the nodes in the low-field state are predominantly located in the vicinity of the a-b plane. The modification of the order parameter is strongest when field is applied in the a-b plane, which causes nodes to move away from the direction of the applied field. Both d_(B_2u)+id_(B_1u) and d_(B_2u)+id_(A_u) two-component order parameters can account for our observations, with d_(B_2u)+id_(B_1u) a more likely candidate. In either scenario, our measurements indicate that B_2u is the primary superconducting order parameter in UTe2.

We report new heat capacity measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ down to $\sim$ 0.1 K in a magnetic field along the $[1,\bar{1}, 0]$ direction. These new measurements show that the broad hump in the zero-field heat capacity moves higher in temperature with increasing field strength and is split into two humps by the $[1,\bar{1}, 0]$ field at $\sim$ 2 T. These separate features are due to the decomposition of the pyrochlore lattice into effectively decoupled chains for fields in this direction: one set of chains ($\alpha$-chains) is polarized by the field while the other ($\beta$-chains) remains free. Our theoretical modelling suggests that the $\beta$-chains are close to a critical state, with nearly-gapless excitations. We also report new elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in $[1, \bar{1}, 0]$ and $[0, 0, 1]$ magnetic fields at temperatures down to 0.03 K. The elastic scattering behaves consistently with the formation of independent chains for a $[1, \bar{1}, 0]$ field, while the $[0, 0, 1]$ field produces a single field-induced magnetic Bragg peak at $(0, 2, 0)$ and equivalent wavevectors, indicating a polarized spin ice for fields above $\sim$ 3 T. For both $[1, \bar{1}, 0]$ and $[0, 0, 1]$ fields, our inelastic neutron scattering results show an approximately-dispersionless continuum of scattering that increases in both energy and intensity with increasing field strength. By modelling the complete set of experimental data using numerical linked cluster and semiclassical molecular dynamics calculations, we demonstrate the dominantly multipolar nature of the exchange interactions in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ and the smallness of the parameter $\theta$ which controls the mixing between dipolar and octupolar degrees of freedom. These results support previous estimates of the microscopic exchange parameters.

In his comment [arXiv:2209.03235], S. W. Lovesey argues that our analysis of neutron scattering experiments performed on Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ is invalid. Lovesey argues that we have not properly accounted for the higher-order multipolar contributions to the magnetic scattering and that our use of pseudospin-$1/2$ operators to describe the scattering is inappropriate. In this reply, we show that the multipolar corrections discussed by Lovesey only become significant at scattering wavevectors exceeding those accessed in our experiments. This in no way contradicts or undermines our work, which never claimed a direct observation of scattering from higher-order multipoles. We further show that Lovesey's objections to our use of pseudospins are unfounded, and that the pseudospin operators are able to describe all magnetic scattering processes at the energy scale of our experiments, far below the crystal field gap. Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular lattice resonating valence bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$. We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe$_2$ heat capacity using high temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe$_2$ fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg $J_2/J_1$ to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$ shows that smaller $A$-site Na$^+$ ion has a larger $J_2/J_1$ ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe$_2$ increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases $J_2/J_1$. In most superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs in a spin-singlet state mediated by either phonons or by long-range interactions such as spin fluctuations. The superconductor UTe$_2$ is a rare material wherein electrons are believed to form pairs in a unique spin-triplet state with potential topological properties. While spin-triplet pairing may be mediated by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic fluctuations, experimentally, the magnetic properties of UTe$_2$ are unclear. By way of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on independently grown UTe$_2$ single crystals we demonstrate the existence of magnetic clusters that gradually freeze into a disordered spin frozen state at low temperatures. Our findings suggest that inhomogeneous freezing of magnetic clusters is linked to the ubiquitous residual linear term in the temperature dependence of the specific heat ($C$) and the low-temperature upturn in $C/T$ versus $T$. The omnipresent magnetic inhomogeneity has potential implications for experiments aimed at establishing the intrinsic low-temperature properties of UTe$_2$., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures

The Heisenberg triangular lattice quantum spin liquid and the phase transitions to nearby magnetic orders have received much theoretical attention, but clear experimental manifestations of these states are rare. This work investigates a new spin-half Yb$^{3+}$ delafossite material, KYbSe$_2$, whose inelastic neutron scattering spectra reveal a diffuse continuum with a sharp lower bound. Applying entanglement witnesses to the data reveals significant multipartite entanglement spread between its neighbors, and analysis of its magnetic exchange couplings shows close proximity to the triangular lattice Heisenberg quantum spin liquid. Key features of the data are reproduced by Schwinger-boson theory and tensor network calculations with a significant second-neighbor coupling $J_2$. The strength of the dynamical structure factor at the $K$ point shows a scaling collapse in $\hbar\omega/k_\mathrm{B}T$ down to 0.3 K, indicating a second-order quantum phase transition. Comparing this to previous theoretical work suggests that the proximate phase at larger $J_2$ is a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid, resolving a long-debated issue. The Ce$^{3+}$ pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ degrees of freedom in the pyrochlore magnet Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ are known to possess dipole-octupole (DO) character, making it a candidate for novel quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground states at low temperatures. We report new polarized neutron diffraction at low temperatures, as well as heat capacity ($C_p$) measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. The former bears both similarities and differences from that measured in the canonical dipolar spin ice compound Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, while the latter rises sharply at low temperatures, initially plateauing near 0.08 K, before falling off towards a high temperature zero beyond 3 K. Above $\sim$0.5 K, the $C_p$ data set can be fit to the results of a quantum numerical linked cluster (NLC) calculation, carried out to 4$^{\mathrm{th}}$ order, that allows estimates for the terms in the near-neighbour XYZ Hamiltonian expected for such DO pyrochlore systems. Fits of the same theory to the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and unpolarized neutron scattering complement this analysis. A comparison between the resulting best fit NLC calculation and the polarized neutron diffraction shows both agreement and discrepancies, mostly in the form of zone-boundary diffuse scattering in the non-spin flip channel, which are attributed to interactions beyond near-neighbours. The lack of an observed thermodynamic anomaly and the constraints on the near-neighbour XYZ Hamiltonian suggest that Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ realizes a U(1)$_\pi$ QSL state at low temperatures, and one that likely resides near the boundary between dipolar and octupolar character., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

CeCd$_3$As$_3$ is a rare-earth triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with large inter-layer separation. Our field-dependent heat capacity measurements at dilution fridge temperatures allow us to trace the field-evolution of the spin-excitation gaps throughout the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions. The distinct gap evolution places strong constraints on the microscopic pseudo-spin model, which, in return, yields a close {\it quantitative} description of the gap behavior. In search of novel, improved materials for magnetic data storage and spintronic devices, compounds that allow a tailoring of magnetic domain shapes and sizes are essential. Good candidates are materials with intrinsic anisotropies or competing interactions, as they are prone to host various domain phases that can be easily and precisely selected by external tuning parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Here, we utilize vector magnetic fields to visualize directly the magnetic anisotropy in the uniaxial ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B. We demonstrate a feasible control both globally and locally of domain shapes and sizes by the external field as well as a smooth transition from single stripe to bubble domains, which opens the door to future applications based on magnetic domain tailoring.

We have investigated polycrystalline samples of the zigzag chain system BaTb$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation measurements. Despite the onset of Tb$^{3+}$ short-range antiferromagnetic correlations at $|\theta_{CW}|$ $=$ 18.5 K and a very large effective moment, our combined measurements indicate that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ remains paramagnetic down to 0.095 K. The magnetic properties of this material show striking similarities to the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and therefore we propose that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ is a new large moment spin liquid candidate., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present experimental results for the heavy-electron compound CeCu$_{4}$Ga which show that it possesses short-range magnetic correlations down to a temperature of $T = 0.1$ K. Our neutron scattering data show no evidence of long-range magnetic order occurring despite a peak in the specific heat at $T^{*} =1.2$ K. Rather, magnetic diffuse scattering occurs which corresponds to short-range magnetic correlations occurring across two unit cells. The specific heat remains large as $T\sim0$ K resulting in a Sommerfeld coefficient of $\gamma_{0} = 1.44(2)$ J/mol-K$^{2}$, and, below $T^{*}$, the resistivity follows $T^{2}$ behavior and the ac magnetic susceptibility becomes temperature independent. A magnetic peak centered at an energy transfer of $E_{\rm{c}}=0.24(1)$ meV is seen in inelastic neutron scattering data which shifts to higher energies and broadens under a magnetic field. The AR$_2$O$_4$ family (R = rare earth) have recently been attracting interest as a new series of frustrated magnets, with the magnetic R atoms forming zigzag chains running along the $c$-axis. We have investigated polycrystalline BaNd$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements. Magnetic Bragg peaks are observed below $T_N$ $=$ 1.7 K, and they can be indexed with a propagation vector of $\vec{k}$ $=$ (0 1/2 1/2). The signal from magnetic diffraction is well described by long-range ordering from only one of the two types of Nd zigzag chains, with collinear up-up-down-down intrachain spin configurations. Furthermore, low temperature magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal two field-induced spin transitions at 2.5 T and 4 T for $T$ $=$ 0.46 K. The high field phase is paramagnetic, while the intermediate field state may arise from a spin transition of the long-range ordered Nd chains, resulting in an up-up-down intrachain spin configuration. The proposed intermediate field state is consistent with the magnetic structure determined in zero field for these chains by NPD, as both phases are predicted for the classical Ising chain model with nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor interactions., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to Phys. We report the influence of intrinsic superconducting parameters on the vortex dynamics and the critical current densities of a MgB$_2$ thin film. The small magnetic penetration depth of \lambda = 50 nm at T=4 K is related to a clean \pi-band, and transport and magnetization data show an upper critical field similar to those reported in clean single crystals. We find a high self-field critical current density Jc, which is strongly reduced with applied magnetic field, and attribute this to suppression of the superconductivity in the \pi-band. The temperature dependence of the creep rate S(T) at low magnetic field can be explained by a simple Anderson-Kim mechanism. The system shows high pinning energies at low field that are strongly suppressed by high field, which is consistent with a two-band contribution.

In this work we report the influence of intrinsic superconducting parameters on the vortex dynamics in an overdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.14) single crystal. We find a superconducting critical temperature of 13.5 K, magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_{ab}$(0) = 660 $\pm$ 50 nm, coherence length $\xi_{ab}$(0) = 5 nm, and the upper critical field anisotropy $\gamma_{T\rightarrow Tc}$ $\approx$ 3.7. In fact, the Ginzburg-Landau model may explain the angular dependent $H_{c2}$ for this anisotropic three-dimensional superconductor. The vortex phase diagram, in comparison with the optimally doped compound, presents a narrow collective creep regime. In addition, we found no sign of correlated pinning along the c axis. Our results show that vortex core to defect size ratio and $\lambda$ play an important role in the resulting vortex dynamics in materials with similar intrinsic thermal fluctuations.

We studied the ferromagnetic topology in a Y$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ thin film with a combination of magnetic force microscopy and magnetization measurements. Our results show that the spin-glass like behavior, reported previously for this system, could be attributed to frustrated interfaces of the ferromagnetic clusters embedded in a non-ferromagnetic matrix. We found temperature dependent changes of the magnetic topology at low temperatures, which suggests a non-static Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ ratio.

We report on the dramatic effect of random point defects, produced by proton irradiation, on the superfluid density $\rho_{s}$ in superconducting Ca$_{0.5}$Na$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. The magnitude of the suppression is inferred from measurements of the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ using magnetic force microscopy. Our findings indicate that a radiation dose of 2$\times10^{16}$cm$^{-2}$ produced by 3 MeV protons results in a reduction of the superconducting critical temperature $T_{c}$ by approximately 10%. % with no appreciable change in the slope of the upper critical fields. In contrast, $\rho_{s}(0)$ is suppressed by approximately 60%. This break-down of the Abrikosov-Gorkov theory may be explained by the so-called "Swiss cheese model", which accounts for the spatial suppression of the order parameter near point defects similar to holes in Swiss cheese. Both the slope of the upper critical field and the penetration depth $\lambda(T/T_{c})/\lambda(0)$ exhibit similar temperature dependences before and after irradiation. This may be due to a combination of the highly disordered nature of Ca$_{0.5}$Na$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with large intraband and simultaneous interband scattering as well as the $s^\pm$-wave nature of short coherence length superconductivity.

A current of electrons traversing a landscape of localized spins possessing non-coplanar magnetic order gains a geometrical (Berry) phase which can lead to a Hall voltage independent of the spin-orbit coupling within the material--a geometrical Hall effect. We show that the highly-correlated metal UCu5 possesses an unusually large controllable geometrical Hall effect at T<1.2K due to its frustration-induced magnetic order. The magnitude of the Hall response exceeds 20% of the \nu=1 quantum Hall effect per atomic layer, which translates into an effective magnetic field of several hundred Tesla acting on the electrons. The existence of such a large geometric Hall response in UCu5 opens a new field of inquiry into the importance of the role of frustration in highly-correlated electron materials., Comment: article and supplemental information

We report the temperature dependent magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ and the superconducting critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ in a 500-nm MgB$_{2}$ film. Our analysis of the experimental results takes into account the two gap nature of the superconducting state and indicates larger intraband diffusivity in the three-dimensional (3D) $\pi$ band compared to that in the two-dimensional (2D) $\sigma$ band. Direct comparison of our results with those reported previously for single crystals indicates that larger intraband scattering in the 3D $\pi$ band leads to an increase of $\lambda$. We calculated $\lambda$ and the thermodynamic critical field $H_{c}\approx$2000 Oe employing the gap equations for two-band superconductors. Good agreement between the measured and calculated $\lambda$ value indicates the two independent measurements, such as magnetic force microscopy and transport, provide a venue for investigating superconducting properties in multi-band superconductors.

We present an experimental approach using magnetic force microscopy for measurements of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda$ in superconductors. $\lambda$ is obtained in a simple and robust way without introducing any tip modeling procedure via direct comparison of the Meissner response curves for a material of interest to those measured on a reference sample. Using a well-characterized Nb film as a reference, we determine the absolute value of $\lambda$ in a Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal and a MgB$_2$ thin film through a comparative experiment. Our apparatus features simultaneous loading of multiple samples, and allows straightforward measurement of the absolute value of $\lambda$ in superconducting thin film or single crystal samples.

We have measured the temperature dependence of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ in a Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$)[(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$]$_{5}$ (x=0.097) single crystal using a low-temperature magnetic force microscope (MFM). We obtain $\lambda_{ab}$(0)$\approx$1000 nm via extrapolating the data to $T = 0$. This large $\lambda$ and pronounced anisotropy in this system are responsible for large thermal fluctuations and the presence of a liquid vortex phase in this low-temperature superconductor with critical temperature of 11 K, consistent with the interpretation of the electrical transport data. The superconducting parameters obtained from $\lambda$ and coherence length $\xi$ place this compound in the extreme type \MakeUppercase{\romannumeral 2} regime. Meissner responses (via MFM) at different locations across the sample are similar to each other, indicating good homogeneity of the superconducting state on a sub-micron scale.

We report extensive measurements on a new compound (Yb0.24Sn0.76)Ru that crystallizes in the cubic CsCl structure. Valence band photoemission and L3 x-ray absorption show no divalent component in the 4f configuration of Yb. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) indicates that the eight-fold degenerate J-multiplet of Yb3+ is split by the crystalline electric field (CEF) into a {\Gamma}7 doublet ground state and a {\Gamma}8 quartet at an excitation energy 20 meV. The magnetic susceptibility can be fit very well by this CEF scheme under the assumption that a {\Gamma}6 excited state resides at 32 meV; however, the {\Gamma}8/{\Gamma}6 transition expected at 12 meV was not observed in the INS. The resistivity follows a Bloch- Gr\"uneisen law shunted by a parallel resistor, as is typical of systems subject to phonon scattering with no apparent magnetic scattering. All of these properties can be understood as representing simple local moment behavior of the trivalent Yb ion. At 1 K, there is a peak in specific heat that is too broad to represent a magnetic phase transition, consistent with absence of magnetic reflections in neutron diffraction. On the other hand, this peak also is too narrow to represent the Kondo effect in the {\Gamma}7 ground state doublet. On the basis of the field-dependence of the specific heat, we argue that antiferromagnetic shortrange order (possibly co-existing with Kondo physics) occurs at low temperatures. The long-range magnetic order is suppressed because the Yb site occupancy is below the percolation threshold for this disordered compound.

Inhomogeneous electronic states resulting from entangled spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are hallmarks of strongly correlated electron materials; such behavior has been observed in many classes of d-electron materials, including the high-Tc copper-oxide superconductors, manganites, and most recently the iron-pnictide superconductors. The complexity generated by competing phases in these materials constitutes a considerable theoretical challenge-one that still defies a complete description. Here, we report a new manifestation of electronic inhomogeneity in a strongly correlated f-electron system, using CeCoIn5 as an example. A thermodynamic analysis of its superconductivity, combined with nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements, shows that nonmagnetic impurities (Y, La, Yb, Th, Hg and Sn) locally suppress unconventional superconductivity, generating an inhomogeneous electronic "Swiss cheese" due to disrupted periodicity of the Kondo lattice. Our analysis may be generalized to include related systems, suggesting that electronic inhomogeneity should be considered broadly in Kondo lattice materials., Comment: 27 pages

We have performed low-temperature specific heat $C$ and thermal conductivity $\kappa$ measurements on the Ni-pnictide superconductors BaNi$_2$As$_2$ ($T_\mathrm{c}$=0.7 K and SrNi$_2$P$_2$ ($T_\mathrm{c}$=1.4 K). The temperature dependences $C(T)$ and $\kappa(T)$ of the two compounds are similar to the results of a number of s-wave superconductors. Furthermore, the concave field responses of the residual $\kappa$ for BaNi$_2$As$_2$ rules out the presence of nodes on the Fermi surfaces. We postulate that fully gapped superconductivity could be universal for Ni-pnictide superconductors. We investigated the effect of electron and hole doping on the high-field low-temperature superconducting state in CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$M$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with M=Sn, Cd and Hg and $x$ up to 0.33% at temperatures down to 0.1\,K and fields up to 14\,T. Although both Cd- and Hg-doping (hole-doping) suppresses the zero-field $T_c$ monotonically, $H_{c2}$ increases with small amounts of doping and has a maximum around $x$=0.2% (M=Cd). On the other hand, with Sn-doping (electron-doping) both zero-field $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$ decrease monotonically. The critical temperature for the high-field low-temperature superconducting state (so called {\it Q}-state) correlates with $H_{c2}$ and $T_c$, which we interpret in support of the superconducting origin of this state., Comment: Phys. From small-angle neutron scattering studies of the flux line lattice (FLL) in CeCoIn5, with magnetic field applied parallel to the crystal c-axis, we obtain the field- and temperature-dependence of the FLL form factor, which is a measure of the spatial variation of the field in the mixed state. We extend our earlier work [A.D. Bianchi et al. 2008 Science 319, 177] to temperatures up to 1250 mK. Over the entire temperature range, paramagnetism in the flux line cores results in an increase of the form factor with field. Near H_c2 the form factor decreases again, and our results indicate that this fall-off extends outside the proposed FFLO region. Instead, we attribute the decrease to a paramagnetic suppression of Cooper pairing. When subjected to pressure, the prototypical heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 becomes superconducting, forming a broad dome of superconductivity centered around 2.35 GPa (=P2) with maximal Tc of 2.3 K. Above the superconducting dome, the normal state shows strange metallic behaviours, including a divergence in the specific heat and a sub-T-linear electrical resistivity. The discovery of a field-induced magnetic phase that coexists with superconductivity for a range of pressures P < P2 has been interpreted as evidence for a quantum phase transition, which could explain the non-Fermi liquid behavior observed in the normal state. Here we report electrical resistivity measurements of CeRhIn5 under magnetic field at P2, where the resistivity is sub-T-linear for temperatures above Tc (or T_FL) and a T^2-coefficient A found below T_FL diverges as Hc2 is approached. These results are similar to the field-induced quantum critical compound CeCoIn5 and confirm the presence of a quantum critical point in the pressure-induced superconductor CeRhIn5., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We report the local measurements of the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda$ in a superconducting Nb film using magnetic force microscopy (MFM). We developed a method for quantitative extraction of the penetration depth from single-parameter simultaneous fits to the lateral and height profiles of the MFM signal, and demonstrate that the obtained value is in excellent agreement with that obtained from the bulk magnetization measurements., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, submitted to APL on 08/18/09

We report Ferromagnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (FMRFM) experiments on a justaposed continuous films of permalloy and cobalt. Our studies demonstrate the capability of FMRFM to perform local spectroscopy of different ferromagnetic materials. Theoretical analysis of the uniform resonance mode near the edge of the film agrees quantitatively with experimental data. We report low-temperature thermal conductivity down to 40 mK of the antiferromagnet BaFe$_2$As$_{2}$, which is the parent compound of recently discovered iron-based superconductors. In the investigated temperature range below 4 K, the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ is well described by the expression $\kappa$ = $aT$ + $bT^{2.22}$. We attribute the ``$aT$''-term to an electronic contribution which is found to satisfy the Wiedemann-Franz law in the $T$ $\to$ 0 K limit, and the remaining thermal conductivity, $\sim$ $T^{2.22}$, is attributed to phonon conductivity. A small influence on thermal conductivity by magnetic fields up to 8 T is well accounted by the observed magnetoresistance. The result is consistent with a fully gapped magnon spectrum, inferred previously from inelastic neutron scattering measurements., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (MRFM) measurements of Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) in a 50 nm thick permalloy film, tilted with respect to the direction of the external magnetic field. At small probe-sample distances the MRFM spectrum breaks up into multiple modes, which we identify as local ferromagnetic resonances confined by the magnetic field of the MRFM tip. Micromagnetic simulations support this identification of the modes and show they are stabilized in the region where the dipolar tip field has a component anti-parallel to the applied field., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We review the properties of Ni-based superconductors which contain Ni2X2 (X=As, P, Bi, Si, Ge, B) planes, a common structural element found also in the recently discovered FeAs superconductors. Strong evidence for the fully gapped nature of the superconducting state has come from field dependent thermal conductivity results on BaNi2As2. Coupled with the lack of magnetism, the majority of evidence suggests that the Ni-based compounds are conventional electron-phonon mediated superconductors. However, the increase in Tc in LaNiAsO with doping is anomalous, and mimics the behavior in LaFeAsO. Furthermore, comparisons of the properties of Ni- and Fe-based systems show many similarities, particularly with regards to structure-property relationships. Superconductivity without phonons has been proposed for strongly correlated electron materials that are tuned close to a zero-temperature magnetic instability of itinerant charge carriers. Near this boundary, quantum fluctuations of magnetic degrees of freedom assume the role of phonons in conventional superconductors, creating an attractive interaction that glues electrons into superconducting pairs. Here we show that superconductivity can arise from a very different spectrum of fluctuations associated with a local or Kondo-breakdown quantum-critical point that is revealed in isotropic scattering of charge carriers and a sub-linear temperature-dependent electrical resistivity. At this critical point, accessed by applying pressure to the strongly correlated, local-moment antiferromagnet CeRhIn5, magnetic and charge fluctuations coexist and produce electronic scattering that is maximal at the optimal pressure for superconductivity. This previously unanticipated source of pairing glue opens possibilities for understanding and discovering new unconventional forms of superconductivity., Comment: Supplementary information is also included

We have performed low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements of the Ni-based superconductor BaNi$_2$As$_2$ ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 0.7 K) in magnetic field. In zero field, thermal conductivity shows $T$-linear behavior in the normal state and exhibits a BCS-like exponential decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The field dependence of the residual thermal conductivity extrapolated to zero temperature is indicative of a fully gapped superconductor. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of the specific heat data, which are well fit by the BCS temperature dependence from $T_\mathrm{c}$ down to the lowest temperature of 0.1 K., Comment: Physical Review Letters, to be published

We report the synthesis and physical properties of single crystals of stoichiometric BaNi2As2 that crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2 structure with lattice parameters a = 4.112(4) \AA and c = 11.54(2) \AA. Resistivity and heat capacity show a first order phase transition at T_0 = 130 K with a thermal hysteresis of 7 K. The Hall coefficient is weakly temperature dependent from room temperature to 2 K where it has a value of -4x10^{-10} \Omega-cm/Oe. Resistivity, ac-susceptibility, and heat capacity find evidence for bulk superconductivity at T_c = 0.7 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient at T_c is 11.6 \pm 0.9 mJ/molK^2. The upper critical field is anisotropic with initial slopes of dH_{c2}^{c}/dT = -0.19 T/K and dH_{c2}^{ab}/dT = -0.40 T/K, as determined by resistivity., Comment: Published version: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have developed the experimental approach to characterize spatial distribution of the magnetic field produced by cantilever tips used in magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). We performed MRFM measurements on a well characterized diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) film and mapped the 3D field profile produced by a Nd2Fe14B probe tip. We investigated the effect of Cd and Hg doping on the first order superconducting (SC) transition and the high field-low temperature SC state of CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring the specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Cd$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.0011, 0.0022 and 0.0033 and CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Hg$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.00016, 0.00032, and 0.00048 at temperatures down to 0.1 K and fields up to 14 T. Cd substitution rapidly suppresses the cross-over temperature $T_{\rm 0}$, where the superconducting transition changes from second to first order, to $T$=0 K with x=0.0022 for $H\parallel$ [100], while it remains roughly constant up to x=0.0033 for $H\parallel$ [001]. The associated anomaly of the proposed FFLO state in Hg-doped samples is washed out by x=0.00048, while remaining at the same temperature, indicating high sensitivity of that state to impurities. We interpret these results as supporting the non-magnetic, possibly FFLO, origin of the high field - low temperature state in CeCoIn$_5$.

We report the properties of two new isostructural compounds, U3Bi4Ni3 and U3Bi4Rh3. The first of these compounds is non-metallic, and the second is a nearly ferromagnetic metal, both as anticipated from their electron count relative to other U-based members of the larger 3-4-3 family. For U3Bi4Rh3, a logarithmic increase of C/T below 3 K, a resistivity proportional to T^4/3, and the recovery of Fermi-liquid behavior in both properties with applied fields greater than 3T, suggest that U3Bi4Rh3 may be a new example of a material displaying ferromagnetic quantum criticality., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review B

NaV2O4 crystals were grown under high pressure using a NaCl flux, and the crystals were characterized with X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization. The structure of NaV2O4 consists of double chains of edge-sharing VO6 octahedra. The resistivity is highly anisotropic, with the resistivity perpendicular to the chains more than 20 times greater than that parallel to the chains. Magnetically, the intrachain interactions are ferromagnetic and the interchain interactions are antiferromagnetic; 3D antiferromagnetic order is established at 140 K. First principles electronic structure calculations indicate that the chains are half metallic. Ferromagnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (FMRFM) offers a means of performing local ferromagnetic resonance. We have studied the evolution of the FMRFM force spectra in a continuous 50 nm thick permalloy film as a function of probe-film distance and performed numerical simulations of the intensity of the FMRFM probe-film interaction force, accounting for the presence of the localized strongly nonuniform magnetic field of the FMRFM probe magnet. Excellent agreement between the experimental data and the simulation results provides insight into the mechanism of FMR mode excitation in an FMRFM experiment., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Magnetization measurements were performed on CeCoIn_5 at temperature down to 30 mK with the magnetic field applied in three different orientations: parallel, near parallel ($\sim$ 10$^{0}$ rotated) and perpendicular to the ab-plane. For these three orientations we have observed crossover features in the torque/magnetization traces at fields just below $H_{c2}$, giving further evidence for the formation of a high field Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting state in CeCoIn_5 for $H \parallel ab$-plane and newly indicates that the FFLO state persists for out-of-plane field orientations. Furthermore, for the (near) parallel to $ab$-plane field configurations and $T\leq \mathrm{50 mK}$, we have found an anomalous peak effect(APE) just below the crossover field when the magnetic field is sweeping down from normal to superconducting state. The dynamics of this peak suggests the existence of a metastable phase occurring in the vicinity of the FFLO phase and raises questions about the order (first or second) of the transition from FFLO to the superconducting state. None of the above features were found in a Ce_{0.98}Gd_{0.02}CoIn_{5} crystal., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present specific heat and susceptibility data on Sm(La,Sr)CuO4 in magnetic fields up to 9 T and temperatures down to 100 mK. We find a broad peak in specific heat which is insensitive to magnetic field at a temperature of 1.5 K with a value of 2.65 J/mol K. The magnetic susceptibility at 5 T continues to increase down to 2 K, the lowest temperature measured.
