The incidence in Israel of genital infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been increasing steadily over the last two decades. During the years 1973-91, 1,508 patients had an HSV infection confirmed by viral culturing. The yearly incidence of new cases rose from sporadic cases in the seventies to 32.4 cases per 1,000 patients in 1990. The age distribution pattern did not change since 1980 and showed a peak incidence in subjects aged 20-40 years. The increase of HSV type 2 (HSV-2) infection rate in the Israeli population, as judged from specific geometric mean titers (GMT), rose from 15.25 in 1970 to 89.3 in 1991, while the GMT for HSV type 1 (HSV-1) did not increase significantly. The incidence of HSV-2 positive subjects (HSV-2/HSV-1 antibody ratio > or = 1) was low in the Jewish Israeli population, compared to other demographic areas. The predominant type of genital infection was HSV-2, although 21% of genital isolates were HSV-1.

A nested case control study of persons who developed skin cancer after scalp irradiation in childhood revealed two risk factors for the appearance of radiation-induced skin cancer: (a) an apparently higher radiation dose delivered inadvertently, manifested by a higher prevalence of alopecia and radiation dermatitis (RR = 3.4; CI 1.3-8.8); (b) a more frequent exposure to the sun, manifested by summer sunbathing (RR = 2.6; CI 1.1-6.1). These findings may have certain implications with regard to the understanding of radiation-induced cancer, after low-dose radiation exposure, in general.

A family in which two sisters are affected by pemphigus is described. Literature research has revealed the presence of 25 families, comprising 53 patients, in which pemphigus existed in more than one member. The relationships between those affected were mainly parent-child or sibling-sibling. Pemphigus was found to be associated with specific HLA antigens: A26, Bw38, DRw4, and additionally occurred with a higher frequency in certain ethnic groups. The variety of etiologic factors in the pathogenesis of pemphigus is discussed and the significance of a genetic role elucidated.

A family with a four-generation history of steatocystoma multiplex is presented. The subject described had unusually large tumors on his scalp and forehead which were successfully excised and closed with skin grafts.

The efficacy of topical interferon-beta (IFN-beta) treatment was assessed in 25 patients with herpes of the lips or genitals who completed a 2-year follow-up in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial. IFN-beta gel (10(5) U/g) 4 times daily (about 2 x 10(4) U) applied locally during eruptions (about 10 days) reduced the mean number of recurrences (p less than 0.007) and the duration of eruptions (p less than 0.007): in the placebo group these indices did not change significantly. Reduction of symptoms and severity was noted in 11 of 12 patients on IFN-beta and in only 1 on placebo. No important side-effects were recorded. Topical IFN-beta may therefore be advantageous as a time-limited local treatment of recurrent herpes simplex virus infections of the genitals and lips.

Favus has become a rarly found chronic fungal infection mainly caused by Trichophyton schoenleini and occasionally by Trichophyton violaceum or Microsporum gypseum. It can still be found in areas where the population suffers from poor hygiene and malnutrition. Cases are seen in the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, Asia, Poland, Russia, France, and the Balkans. Isolated cases have also been reported from South Africa, Mexico, Central America, and Canada. Cases are encountered occasionally in the United States, almost exclusively in immigrants.
