Background: Sleep apnea (SA) and insomnia (INS) are prevalent sleep disorders among referrals to sleep clinics. People with comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA) suffer both disorders simultaneously. The epidemiology of COMISA is not well known in the Middle East including Iran. We hypothesized that COMISA is prevalent in metropolitan sleep clinic cohorts in Iran., Method: The records of patients aged < 95 years referred to sleep disorders centers in four large metropolitan areas including Kermanshah, Tabriz, Shiraz, and Ahvaz were examined. Polysomnography (PSG) was performed in all these patients in specialized centers and the results were scored by a trained technician and interpreted by a sleep specialist. SA was defined as an Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI ≥ 5), INS was defined by psychiatrists according to self-report and clinical interviews, and COMISA was defined if both disorders were present. Participants with neither condition were included in as comparator group. One-way ANOVAs, correlation, and linear/logistic regression analyses were used., Results: This study included 1807 patients (Mean age 49.3, SE ± 13.7; 38.8% Female). Comparator, INS, SA and COMISA made up 7.2%, 16%, 50.2% and 26.6% of the sample, respectively. Logistic regression analyses showed that male gender, older age, and increasing neck circumference, but not BMI, were associated with COMISA. Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores were lower in INS (5.39 ± 5.78) compared to the other three groups., Conclusion: COMISA is a prevalent condition in metropolitan sleep centers in Iran among participants referred to sleep centers. A wide range of high-Z nanomaterials are fabricated to decrease radiation dose by sensitizing cells to irradiation through various mechanisms such as ROS generation enhancement. Alginate-coated silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag 2 S@Alg) were synthesized and characterized by SEM, TEM, DLS, XRD, EPS, FT-IR, and UV-vis analysis techniques. Cytotoxicity of nanoparticles was tested against HFF-2, MCF-7, and 4 T1 cell lines for biocompatibility and radio enhancement ability evaluation, respectively. Moreover, the hemolysis assay demonstrated that the nanoparticles were biocompatible and nontoxic. In vitro intracellular ROS generation and calcein AM/PI co-staining unveiled cancerous cell death induction by nanoradiosensitizer, Ag 2 S@Alg. Further, histopathology results emphasized the tumor ablation capability of Ag 2 S@Alg. Ischemic stroke is the most common among various stroke types and the second leading cause of death, worldwide. Edaravone (EDV) is one of the cardinal antioxidants that is capable of scavenging reactive oxygen species, especially hydroxyl molecules, and has been already used for ischemic stroke treatment. However, poor water solubility, low stability, and bioavailability in aqueous media are major EDV drawbacks. Thus, to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks, nanogel was exploited as a drug carrier of EDV. Furthermore, decorating the nanogel surface with glutathione as targeting ligands would potentiate the therapeutic efficacy. Nanovehicle characterization was assessed with various analytical techniques. Size (199 nm, hydrodynamic diameter) and zeta potential (-25 mV) of optimum formulation were assessed. The outcome demonstrated a diameter of around 100 nm, sphere shape, and homogenous morphology. Encapsulation efficiency and drug loading were determined to be 99.9% and 37.5%, respectively. In vitro drug release profile depicted a sustained release process. EDV and glutathione presence in one vehicle simultaneously made the possibility of antioxidant effects on the brain in specific doses, which resulted in elevated spatial memory and learning along with cognitive function in Wistar rats. In addition, significantly lower MDA and PCO and higher levels of neural GSH and antioxidant levels were observed, while histopathological improvement was approved. COVID-19 is an acute viral disease that has so far infected more than 200 million and killed more than four million worldwide. It affects the immune system and other organs. Here, we investigated the level of free plasma amino acids in COVID-19 patients and compared them with non-COVID-19 subjects. We also compared amino acids levels in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with non-ICU patients and expired and recovered patients. Twenty-six COVID-19 patients and 32 non-COVID-19 subjects were included in the study. The mean of glutamic acid, serine, glycine, threonine, phenylalanine, leucine, lysine, alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, and ornithine was significantly higher in cases than controls. In addition, the mean of glutamine was significantly lower in patients than controls (443.89 ± 254.31 vs. 651.73 ± 107.38, PV < 0.001). Low level of glutamine and isoleucine was seen in the majority of ICU and expired patients, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed low level of isoleucine as a predictor variable in mortality ( P = 0.02, EXP ( B ) = 16.5, and CI 95% = (1.48, -183.07)). There was a positive and significant relationship between some amino acids levels, serum liver enzymes, and sodium concentrations. There was also a significant but negative correlation between histidine levels, ESR, and ferritin. Phenylalanine had a highly positive relationship with serum procalcitonin in patients ( R 2 = 0.534, PV = 0.015). Our studies have shown the alteration of plasma amino acids concentration in COVID-19 patients. COVID-19, as an emerging infectious disease, has caused significant mortality and morbidity along with socioeconomic impact. No effective treatment or vaccine has been approved yet for this pandemic disease. Cutting-edge tools, especially nanotechnology, should be strongly considered to tackle this virus. This review aims to propose several strategies to design and fabricate effective diagnostic and therapeutic agents against COVID-19 by the aid of nanotechnology. Polymeric, inorganic self-assembling materials and peptide-based nanoparticles are promising tools for battling COVID-19 as well as its rapid diagnosis. This review summarizes all of the exciting advances nanomaterials are making toward COVID-19 prevention, diagnosis and therapy.

Quantum compilation is the task of translating a quantum algorithm implemented in a high-level quantum programming language into a technology-dependent instructions flow for a physical quantum computer. To tackle the large gap between the quantum program and the low-level instructions, quantum compilation is split into a multi-stage flow consisting of several layers of abstraction. Several different individual tasks have been proposed for the layers in the flow, many of them are NP-hard. In this article, we will describe the flow and we will propose algorithms based on Boolean satisfiability, which is a good match to tackle such computationally complex problems. Introduction: Dignified care is one of the moral responsibilities of professional caregivers. However, in many cases the dignity of hospitalized patients, especially women in the delivery room, is not maintained. Dignity is an abstract concept and there has been no previous research exploring the dignity of pregnant women in the delivery room in Iran., Objectives: The objective of this study is to define and explain the concept of dignity for pregnant women in the delivery room from the perspectives of professional caregivers., Research Design: This is qualitative research. The data were collected through in-depth semi-structured individual interviews. The conventional content analysis method was used to analyze the data. In qualitative content analysis, participant narrative is examined in-depth and sorted into categories and themes., Participants and Research Context: Potential participants who met the entrance criteria for this study were approached between July 2016 and February 2017. In all, 20 professional caregivers working in the delivery room setting within Iranian general hospitals were invited to participate in the study. The sampling was done through targeted sampling until saturation was achieved., Ethical Considerations: The research ethics committee of the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences has approved the study's protocol and all commonly recognized ethical principles were followed throughout the study., Findings: The findings of this study were presented in three main themes, including "privacy," "respecting patients' preferences," and "comprehensive attention" and eight categories., Discussions and Conclusion: Women in the delivery room need to be taken care of in an environment where healthcare staff promote the preservation of dignity through maintaining privacy, by providing attentive care and through ensuring that patient preferences regarding care and treatment are respected. In such an environment, the dignity of these women would be maintained and desirable outcomes achieved.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a subgroup of lysosomal storage disorders. The underlying mechanism of MPS disorders are deficiency in specific enzymes which leads to accumulation of partially degraded glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in various tissues. A wide variety of manifestations are reported but musculoskeletal complaints are common among them. In milder forms of MPS, musculoskeletal complaints are presenting symptoms. Delays in diagnosis due to unspecific and mild symptoms is common. Misdiagnosis of MPS as juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other inflammatory arthritis disorders is frequent. Early diagnosis and treatment prevents irreversible cellular damages and is a key factor in efficacy of enzyme replacement therapy. In this study we described two MPS patients with musculoskeletal complaints who were not diagnosed for a period of time. Although musculoskeletal manifestation are common in a variety of clinical conditions, their presence at low ages or co-occurrence of other manifestations (such as cardiac, respiratory, neurologic, etc.) in multiple systems should prompt evaluation of patients for MPS and other metabolic disorders. The rheumatologists' awareness on MPS should be promoted to achieve timely diagnosis and subsequent early treatment.

The aim of the present article was to study the healing of wounds using spider silk. Eight New Zealand female rabbits were selected as animal model. First, 3 identical wounds with length of 15 mm and a depth of 4 mm on the back of each rabbit were created. The first group, as standard control, did not receive any special treatment, they were treated only with saline and Vaseline locally. The second group, as positive control, received a thin film of phenytoin 1% ointment locally. The third group, as treated group, received a thin film of spider silk protein. At the end of the study, a biopsy of skin was done. After tissue preparation, all sections were evaluated. Some morphometrical parameters such as counting cells, fibroblasts, blood vessels, determination of the area of the wound closure, necrotic tissue, speed of wound healing, and epidermal thickness were done, and for data statistical analysis, SPSS software and Excel software were used. The results of this study showed that spider silk dressing may benefit as a possible effect of nanoparticles in the test preparation in wound healing.

We studied variation of ectoparasite load in a free ranging populations of Mehely's horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus mehelyi) on five successive occasions in a nursery roost in western Iran. In total, 87 Rhinolophus mehelyi were captured. The patterns of abundance differed greatly among parasite species but total parasite load was markedly higher in pregnant females in spring and early summer and lower in solitary males. On average, 90% of bats were infested by Eyndhovenia sp. with a mean intensity of 13.79 individuals per bat. Penicillidia sp. and one species from Streblidae were found in 66.7% and 11.49% of bats with parasite load of 2.31 and 1.8 parasite per bat, respectively. Using ratio of forearm length to body mass as an indication of bat health the correlation coefficient between parasite load and the health indicator was 0.002 for males and 0.06 for females indicating that parasite load has no apparent impact on bat's health.

We studied seasonal variation of ectoparasite load (number of parasites per individual bat) in free-ranging populations of the lesser mouse-eared bat Myotis blythii in western Iran. Data for 1 species each of batfly (Nycteribidae), tick (Ixodidae), and mite (Spinturnicidae) are reported for a 1 yr period. Patterns of parasite load during this time differed considerably among species. However, the parasite load increased markedly in pregnant females in spring and early summer. During the same time frame, parasite load decreased in solitary males when they roosted apart from maternity clusters. However, in late summer, when bats began swarming, males showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in parasite load. Using the ratio of body mass to length of forearm as an index of body condition, no significant correlation was found.

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the etiologic agent for adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. Tax(1) is a 40-kDa phosphoprotein, predominantly localized in the nucleus of the host cell, which functions to transactivate both viral and cellular promoters. It seems likely that HTLV-1, through expression of the viral regulatory protein Tax(1), provides some initial alteration in cell metabolism predisposing the development of ATL. Here, we demonstrate that HTLV-1 infection in T-cell lines and patient samples causes overexpression of an early G(1) cyclin, cyclin D2. The transcriptional up-regulation of the cyclin D2 gene is due to activation of Tax on the cyclin D2 gene. More important, we find that overexpression of cyclin D2 is accompanied by acquisition of new partners such as cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (cdk2), cdk4, and cdk6 in infected cells. This is in contrast to uninfected T cells, where cyclin D2 associates only with cdk6. Functional effects of these cyclin-cdk complexes in infected cells are shown by hyperphosphorylation of Rb and histone H1, indicators of active progression into S phase as well as changes in cellular chromatin and transcription machinery. These studies link HTLV-1 infection with changes of cellular cyclin gene expression, hence providing clues to development of T-cell leukemia.
