Vegetation cover fraction (fCover) and related quantities are basic yet critical vegetation structure variables in various disciplines and applications. Ground- and aerial-based proximal and remote sensing techniques have been widely adapted across multiple spatial extents. However, the definitions of fCover-related nomenclatures have not yet been fully standardized, leading to confusing terms and making comparing historic measures difficult. With the issues potentially arising from an increasing diversity of fCover and related quantities estimation methods and corresponding uncertainties, there is also a growing need to spread knowledge on the current advances, challenges, and perspectives, especially in the context of no such existing review for ground- and aerial- based estimation. This paper provides the current knowledge mainly concerning passive image-based methods and active light detection and ranging (LiDAR) -based methods. We first harmonized the definitions of fCover and its related quantities (e.g., effective canopy cover, crown cover, stratified vegetation cover, and canopy fraction). Secondly, the typical applications of fCover and related quantities over a range of scales, fields, and ecosystems were summarized. Thirdly yet importantly, we offered a comprehensive review of traditional non-imaging methods, image-based methods (e.g., segmentation, unmixing, and spectral retrieval), point cloud-based methods (e.g., rasterization), and LiDAR return-based methods (e.g., return number index and return intensity retrieval) across different platforms (i.e., ground, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and airplane). Our investigation of fCover and related quantities estimation touches upon various vegetation ecosystems, including agriculture cropland, grassland, wetland, and forest. Finally, the current challenges and future directions were discussed, such as image signal processing under complex heterogeneous surfaces and stratified cover and non-photosynthesis cover retrieval. We, therefore, expect that this review may offer an insight into fCover and related quantities estimation and serve as a reference for remote sensing scientists, agronomists, silviculturists, and ecologists. The canopy bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) plays a pivotal role in estimating the biophysical parameters of plants, whereas soil background anisotropy creates challenges for their retrieval. Soil optical properties affect canopy anisotropic characteristics, especially in open-canopy areas. However, the remote sensing of background anisotropy is challenging due to the difficulties of information extraction in complex forest ecosystems and varying illumination conditions. This study develops an efficient photogrammetric technique to extract the background soil bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based multiangular images and to verify the need for accurate soil anisotropy information in canopy radiative transfer modeling. Soil BRF profiles were measured over three open-canopy sample plots from multiangular remotely sensed multispectral images collected with a hexacopter. As validation, reference soil BRF profiles were synchronously acquired by a ground-based multiangular imaging system. A high level of consistency between the ground- and UAV-measured soil BRF was observed with an RMSE of less than 0.012. Uncertainty analysis of the measured soil BRF showed that multiple scattering between sunlit soil in large sunflecks and foliage elements contributed less than 5%. Both results demonstrated that soil anisotropy can be accurately extracted from UAV multiangular measurements. To explicitly demonstrate that the use of soil anisotropy can reduce uncertainties in canopy radiative transfer simulations, we simulated the canopy BRF with Lambertian soil and with anisotropic soil using a three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer model under different soil moisture content (SMC) levels, canopy cover (CC) levels and solar zenith angles (SZAs) with simulated realistic forest scenes. We found that less CC, lower SZAs and less SMC lead to a more significant influence of soil anisotropy on canopy reflectance; e.g., the reflectance bias reaches up to 0.3 in the hotspot direction. This illustrates that neglecting soil anisotropy can cause considerable errors in the modeling of the canopy BRF of open forests (i.e., CC levels of less than 0.5). The proposed technique facilitates the characterization of anisotropic forest background soil, which is important for advancing canopy radiative transfer modeling and validation and for the retrieval of vegetation parameters. Occlusion effect, an inherent problem of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) measurements, limits the potential of TLS data in tree attribute estimation. Multiple scans seek to mitigate this effect to provide enhanced scan completeness. However, the numbers and locations of the scans (i.e., the scan design) are usually determined via a subjective assessment of the tree density, spatial patterns of trees, and attributes to be derived. These could cause suboptimal scan completeness and limit tree attribute estimation. This study proposed an iterative-mode scan design to minimize the occlusion effect. First, we introduced a PoTo index based on visibility analysis to evaluate how many trees can be scanned from a location and to select effective candidates for the optimal TLS location. Second, we introduced a cumulative degree of ring closure (CDRC) to quantify the scan completeness for each candidate and determine the optimal TLS location. The TLS data sets of virtual forests with field-measured and synthetic plot parameter settings were simulated according to iterative- and regular-mode designs by using a Heidelberg light detection and ranging (LiDAR) Operations Simulator (HELIOS). The results demonstrated that an iterative-mode design can improve the scan completeness of trees compared to the regular-mode design. The tree attribute (diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height, stem curve, and crown volume) estimates of the iterative-mode design were less erroneous than those of the regular-mode design (e.g., the root-mean-square error (RMSE) could decrease the stem curve estimation by 38% and the crown volume estimation by 15%). Accurate estimates of fractional vegetation cover (FVC) using remotely sensed images collected using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer considerable potential for field measurement. However, most existing methods, which were originally designed to extract FVC from ground-based remotely sensed images (acquired at a few meters above the ground level), cannot be directly used to process aerial images because of the presence of large quantities of mixed pixels. To alleviate the negative effects of mixed pixels, we proposed a new method for decomposing the Gaussian mixture model and estimating FVC, namely, the half-Gaussian fitting method for FVC estimation (HAGFVC). In this method, the histograms of pure vegetation pixels and pure background pixels are firstly fit using two half-Gaussian distributions in the Commission Internationale d’Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b* color space. Then, a threshold is determined based on the parameters of Gaussian distribution to generate a more accurate FVC estimate. We acquired low-altitude remote-sensing (LARS) images in three vegetative growth stages at different flight altitudes over a cornfield. The HAGFVC method successfully fitted the half-Gaussian distributions and obtained stable thresholds for FVC estimation. The results indicate that the HAGFVC method can be used to effectively and accurately derive FVC images, with a small mean bias error (MBE) and with root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 0.04 in all cases. Comparatively, other methods we tested performed poorly (RMSE of up to 0.36) because of the abundance of mixed pixels in LARS images, especially at high altitudes above ground level (AGL) or in the case of moderate vegetation coverage. The results demonstrate the importance of developing image-processing methods that specially account for mixed pixels for LARS images. Simulations indicated that the theoretical accuracy (no errors in fitting the half-Gaussian distributions) of the HAGFVC method reflected an RMSE of less than 0.07. The vegetation index-based (VI-based) mixture model is widely used to derive green fractional vegetation cover ( FVC ) from remotely sensed data. Two critical parameters of the model are the vegetation index values of fully-vegetated and bare soil pixels (denoted V x and V n hereafter). These are commonly empirically set according to spatial and/or temporal statistics. The uncertainty and difficulty of accurately determining V x and V n in many ecosystems limits the accuracy of resultant FVC estimates and hence reduces the utility of VI-based mixture model for FVC estimation. Here, an improved method called MultiVI is developed to quantitatively estimate V x and V n from angular VI acquired at two viewing angles. The directional VI is calculated from the MODIS Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF)/Albedo product (MCD43A1) data. The results of simulated evaluation with 10% added noise show that the root mean square deviation (RMSD) of FVC is approximately 0.1 (the valid FVC range is [0, 1]). Direct evaluation against 34 globally-distributed FVC measurements from VAlidation of Land European Remote sensing Instruments (VALERI) sites during 2000 to 2014 demonstrated that the accuracy of MultiVI FVC (R 2  = 0.866, RMSD = 0.092) exceeds than from SPOT/VEGETATION bioGEOphysical product version 1 (GEOV1) FVC (R 2  = 0.795, RMSD = 0.159). MultiVI FVC also exhibits higher correlation to the VALERI reference FVC than does the MODIS fraction of photosynthetically active radiation product (MCD15A2H; R 2 is 0.696). A key advantage of the MultiVI method is obvious in areas where fully-vegetated and/or bare soil pixels do not exist in moderate-coarse spatial resolution imagery when compared to the conventional VI-based mixture modelling. Accurate and efficient in situ measurement methods of leaf area index (LAI) and leaf angle distribution (LAD) are needed to estimate the fluxes of water and energy in agricultural settings. However, available methods: to estimate these two parameters, especially LAD, are limited. In this study, we propose a field measurement method using multi-angular digital images to estimate LAI and LAD simultaneously from the area proportions of: (i) sunlit soil; (ii) sunlit leaves; (iii) shaded soil; and (iv) shaded leaves. A new expression of the fraction of sunlit leaves is developed based on the radiative transfer theory. Coupling the measured and modeled fractions with an optimization scheme, LAI and the LAD parameters are derived from inverting a fractional model of sunlit and shaded leaves and soil. Through four tests using simulated scenes and in situ measurements for row crops, it is determined that our method performs well. The absolute error of LAI estimation is less than 0.1 when LAI is low (i.e., <1.2), and the absolute deviations of LAI estimates are approximately 0.5 when the reference LAI is 3.5. The estimation errors of LAI and the G function (a representative of LAD which quantifies the projection of unit foliage area) for in situ measurements are respectively less than 0.2 and 0.06 in general. In addition, the accuracy of estimation is even higher when leaves are simulated as randomly distributed disks or observations from multiple azimuth planes are used. One of the most interesting features of this method is its ability to estimate reasonable LAD directly from the fractions of sunlit and shaded leaves, even when LAI is high (i.e., >3), so little background soil is seen. The sensitivity and uncertainty analysis is consistent with the estimation errors. Theoretically, the application of this method is not limited to row crops or to field measurement, as the derived formulae of sunlit and shaded components can be used for other types of vegetation by introducing the clumping index and can be used in the modeling of canopy vegetation parameters (e.g., canopy reflectance). • Microscopic spectroscopy imaging is explored for needle reflectance measurement. • This method measures bidirectional reflectance and is easy to be implemented. • Needle azimuth and specular reflection affect correlations to chlorophyll content. • The method can eliminate specular reflection from reflectance of conifer needles. Leaf reflectance is widely used to retrieve leaf chlorophyll content (Cab) and parameterize canopy radiative transfer models. Measurements of broadleaf reflectance are typically made by using integrating sphere devices, but the approach is generally limited in conifer needle measurements due to the narrow needle coverage relative to the sample port of the integrating sphere. In this study, we proposed a method to measure the bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) of needles by integrating a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer and an optical microscope. Pure needle pixels can be easily extracted from hyperspectral images after microscope magnification. The method was first validated by the narrow strips of broad leaves as proxies of needles, resulting in the difference between the measured BRF of strips and the BRF of whole broad leaves in the visible bands (400–700 nm) and in the near-infrared bands (700–1000 nm) being 0.0043 and 0.019, respectively. The method was also indirectly verified by tracking the variation in the natural needle BRF with its Cab, resulting in the change in BRF being consistent with the change in Cab. In addition, linear relationships between the needle Cab and the classic vegetation indices (i.e. , the red-edge simple ratio and normalized difference vegetation index) calculated from the BRF were found. Apart from the above, we found that (1) the BRF of the abaxial side has a discrepancy with that of the adaxial side of needles, (2) the BRF of a needle varies with its azimuth, hence affecting the correlation between vegetation indices and Cab, and (3) filtering the specular reflection on the microsurfaces of the needle could enhance the correlation between the vegetation indices and needle Cab. The method is expected to accurately measure the BRF of needles and hence to improve the applications of needle optical properties in plant sciences, ecology, and remote sensing fields. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of highly dense vegetation (NDVI v ) and bare soil (NDVI s ), identified as the key parameters for Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) estimation, are usually obtained with empirical statistical methods However, it is often difficult to obtain reasonable values of NDVI v and NDVI s at a coarse resolution (e.g., 1 km), or in arid, semiarid, and evergreen areas. The uncertainty of estimated NDVI s and NDVI v can cause substantial errors in FVC estimations when a simple linear mixture model is used. To address this problem, this paper proposes a physically based method. The leaf area index (LAI) and directional NDVI are introduced in a gap fraction model and a linear mixture model for FVC estimation to calculate NDVI v and NDVI s . The model incorporates the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) model parameters product (MCD43B1) and LAI product, which are convenient to acquire. Two types of evaluation experiments are designed 1) with data simulated by a canopy radiative transfer model and 2) with satellite observations. The root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) for simulated data is less than 0.117, depending on the type of noise added on the data. In the real data experiment, the RMSD for cropland is 0.127, for grassland is 0.075, and for forest is 0.107. The experimental areas respectively lack fully vegetated and non-vegetated pixels at 1 km resolution. Consequently, a relatively large uncertainty is found while using the statistical methods and the RMSD ranges from 0.110 to 0.363 based on the real data. The clumping effect is the main issue causing the heterogeneity in vegetation canopies and the underestimation of leaf area index (LAI) obtained using indirect measurement methods. Significant efforts have been exerted to correct for the clumping effect and derive the true LAI. Recent research has shown that the fractal dimension (FD) is directly related to the clumping effect of foliage, yet practical methods are needed to calculate field estimates. Considering that widely used LAI applications such as digital hemispherical photography (DHP), tracing radiation and architecture of canopies (TRAC), and digital cover photography (DCP) estimate LAI with one-dimensional (1D) gap probability and gap size data, we propose a method to correct for the clumping effect using 1D FD. Resulting formulae describing the relationship between LAI, CI, and 1D FD were based on the box-counting method (BCM) and a binomial distribution model. Sixty-four simulated scenes including four RAdiation transfer Model Intercomparison (RAMI) actual canopies and field measurements from nine plots (four orchard plots and five coniferous forest plots) were used to validate the novel method. Results showed good agreement with reference LAI values for simulated scenes (R2 = 0.96 and RMSE = 0.35). The 1DFD method generated higher LAI estimates compared with the LAI measured using TRAC at the four orchard plots especially at high canopy closure, while its results were more consistent with LAI obtained by litter collection than those of comparable methods at coniferous forest plots (bias from −13.5% to 9.9% for DCP images, from −3.0% to 19.7% for DHP images, and from −3.8% to 17.0% for TRAC transects). Our validation efforts indicate that the method proposed herein corrects for the clumping effect of vegetated canopies more effectively with DCP images, DHP images, and TRAC measurement when compared with traditional indirect optical methods. Surface longwave radiation (SLR) plays an important role in the energy budget of the Earth's climate system. Remote sensing provides various data sources to retrieve SLR on a large scale and with high spatial resolution (e.g., 1 km). Multiple retrieval methods of surface downward longwave radiation (SDLR) based on satellite thermal infrared data produce different retrieval results for the same scenario. Therefore, validating these models is necessary to understand their characteristics and limitations. To this end, ground-based measurements were used to provide independent validation of six widely used SDLR models for clear sky conditions over 41 Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) stations worldwide. The Wang2020 model had the best overall performance (bias of −5.480 W / m 2, root-mean-square errors [RMSE] of 23.226 W / m 2, R 2 of 0.879), and Tang2008 model had similar retrieval capability. The errors of LST had limited influence on the retrieval accuracy of SDLR models. When using the near-surface air temperature, the retrieval accuracy of the Zhou2007 model was significantly improved with a range of ~9.5 W / m 2 for the RMSE. The uncertainty of TCWV had significant effect on all model performances, wherein the Zhou2007 model had stronger error resilience of TCWV. Moreover, MODIS TIR TCWV data provided better performance than NIR TCWV in most situations, and thereby are preferred to use in the SDLR retrieval. Surface altitude had a lesser impact on SDLR retrieval than terrain effects. All models overestimated SDLR for peak stations in mountainous areas, with biases reaching 56.614 W / m 2 and RMSE reaching 63.909 W / m 2. Land cover type also had a significant effect on retrieval accuracy; model performances were poorer in the desert and barren where atmospheric conditions are extremely dry and hot. Remote sensing SDLR data with high accuracy are needed for hydrological, agricultural, and climate change applications. Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) represents the planar fraction of the land-surface covered by green foliage, and its dynamics are important for an enhanced understanding of ecosystems especially how they respond to climate change. The lack of global near-real-time satellite-based products restricts the application of FVC in ecosystem modeling, climate change, and vegetation phenology studies. Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) onboard Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft provides daily spectral reflectance of the entire sunlit Earth in the near Hotspot directions. Hotspot observations (i.e., observation in Hotspot direction which has the peak backscattering reflected radiation) with only sunlit vegetation and sunlit soil components are more suitable for FVC estimation with a two-endmember mixture model as such observations exclude contributions from shaded vegetation and soil components. In this study, an algorithm for retrieving quasi-daily FVC from EPIC based on two-endmember mixture and gap fraction models is developed. Analyses of its performance predict that the average Root-Mean-Square Deviations (RMSDs) of retrievals in FVC units is below 0.050 when compared with reference values. The RMSD is 0.043 when compared to field-based Landsat reference FVC, which confirms lower retrieval uncertainty than FVC retrieved from Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellite products such as MODIS, VIIRS, and GEOV2 with RMSDs 0.049– 0.087. The comparison analyses suggest a good consistency between EPIC FVC and FVC products from LEO and geostationary (GEO) satellites sensor, SEVIRI, with RMSD values less than 0.129. The leaf area index (LAI), defined as one-half of the total green leaf area per unit horizontal ground surface area, is a key parameter in agriculture, forestry, ecology, and other fields. The clumping index (CI) accounts for the nonrandom spatial distribution of the foliage elements in the canopy, thereby considerably influencing the accuracy of LAI estimation with optical field-based instruments. Most of the traditional clumping effect correction methods for LAI measurements are based on the theory developed for one-dimensional (1D) data of the vegetation canopy. The development of new methods remains necessary for LAI measurement with two-dimensional (2D) data, including images from digital cover photography (DCP). We found that the fractal dimension (FD) of a 2D ground-based DCP image is an effective tool for correcting the clumping effect and estimating the LAI. The universal formula was derived to describe the relationship between the LAI and FD for randomly distributed leaves using the box-counting method (BCM) and the Boolean model. For the clumped leaves, the universal formula is related to the FD, LAI, and CI. The LAI and CI can be calculated with the FD and gap probability derived from DCP images. Eighteen simulated scenes of different vegetation structure patterns, three realistic canopy scenes of the fourth phase of the radiative transfer model intercomparison (RAMI), and field-measured data acquired from 5 plots in 4 temporal phases were provided to validate the method. The results showed good agreement with the reference (R2 = 0.93 and RMSE = 0.46 for simulated data; uncertainty from 0.31 to 1.05 for realistic canopy; R2 = 0.85 and RMSE = 0.34 for field-measured data). This validation with downward DCP images shows that the proposed FD method assesses the clumping effect more thoroughly compared to the clumping effect correction methods originally designed for 1D data. Question Although digital photography is an efficient and objective means of extracting green fractional vegetation cover ( FVC), it lacks automation and classification accuracy. How can green FVC be extracted from digital images in an accurate and automated method? Methods Several colour spaces were compared on the basis of a separability index, and CIE L * a * b * was shown to be optimal for the tested colour spaces. Thus, all image processing was performed in CIE L * a * b * colour space. Gaussian models were used to fit the green vegetation and background distributions of the a * component. Three strategies ( T 0, T 1 and T 2 thresholding method) were tested to select the optimal thresholds for segmenting the image into green vegetation and non-green vegetation. The a * components of the images were then segmented and the green FVC extracted. Results The FVC extracted using T 0, T 1, and T 2 thresholding methods were evaluated with simulated images, and cross-validated with FVC extracted with supervised classification methods. The results show that FVC extracted with T 0, T 1 and T 2 thresholding methods are similar to those estimated with supervised classification methods. The mean errors associated with the FVC values provided in our approach and supervised classification are less than 0.035. In a test with simulated data, our method performed better than the supervised classification method. Conclusions Methods presented in this paper were demonstrated to be feasible and applicable for automatically and accurately extracting FVC of several green vegetation types with varying background and shadow conditions. However, our algorithm design assumes a Gaussian distribution for both vegetated and non-vegetated portions of a digital image; moreover, the impact of view angle on the FVC extraction from digital images must also be considered. Optimization techniques are often used in remote sensing retrieval of surface or atmospheric parameters. Nevertheless, different algorithms may exhibit different performances for the same optimization problem. Comparison of some classic optimization approaches in this article aims to select the best method for retrieving aerosol opacity, or even for other parameters, from remotely sensed data. Eight frequently used optimization algorithms were evaluated using both simulated data and actual AATSR (advanced along track scanning radiometer) data. Several typical land cover types and aerosol opacity levels were also considered in the simulations to make the tests more representative. It was observed that the absolute error in retrieval would rise after a certain number of iterations due to the round-off error, and the algorithms showed different performances in the inversions without any a priori knowledge. When combined with reasonable a priori knowledge, the selection of various algorithms only slightly affected the retrieval accuracy. Given a summary of all the comparison tests, a special class named ‘trust-region methods’ (TR) was demonstrated to be the optimal choice in general cases. In contrast, some widely used optimization methods in aerosol research, for example, the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm, seemed not to display a persuasive performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a strategy to construct a priori knowledge in Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) model-based Leaf Area Index (LAI) inversion. In this strategy, the physical limitations, a best guess and its uncertainty for each parameter needed to be inverted were obtained from a spectral database. Vegetation index (VI) and growth date were used to provide more information about LAI. The relationship between LAI and VI was obtained by forward simulation using the BRDF model. The empirical model of the changing LAI and the growth date was obtained by statistical analysis of more than 600 field samples from a wheat paddock. A SAIL-reflectance model including the hotspot-effect (SAILH model) was used to generate bidirectional reflectance distribution. Gaussian distributed random noises were added on the reflectance as 'observation'. SAILH model was inverted to validate the effectiveness of this strategy. It was further validated using both of the ground measurements and airborne remote-sensing data. Inversion is an important process in remote sensing. To estimate the accuracy of retrieved parameters before inversion, we defined an Uncertainty and Sensitivity Ratio in the inversion of remote sensing models. It is a ratio of the priori uncertainty and sensitivity of one input parameter in the forward model to the sum of all parameters' uncertainty and sensitivity. USR was shown to reflect the variance of the retrieved parameter by error propagation theory. Subsequently, we took numeric experiments to illustrate the property of USR for typical vegetation cover scenes. Forty-eight multiangular datasets of Bidirectional Reflectance Factors were generated for these scenes by adding random noise to the Light Scattering by Arbitrarily Inclined Leaves model output. Seven parameters were retrieved for each scene. The results suggested that the Mean Square Error of the inversion results is highly correlated with USR. Based on this ratio, we selected two different angular observations in red and near-infrared (NIR) band to get a new Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which could produce less uncertainty to retrieve the Leaf Area Index (LAI) than using the conventional single-angular observations. The new NDVI was tested by retrieving LAI using the simulated multispectral and multiangular datasets. • The green (550 nm) light absorptance by the canopy (0.5–22 m) was 93.3 %. • Light absorption by the lower canopy was stronger for green than red (680 nm) light. • Under overcast skies, the lower canopy absorbed more green light. Leaves absorb red and blue light more efficiently than green light. Within a spatially heterogeneous canopy, both the sieve effect and the detour effect contribute to an increase in the absorption of green light relative to that of red and blue light. Such an increase in the relative absorption of green light tends to be intensified with increasing canopy depth. Consequently, the absorption of green light could be comparable to that of red and blue light when the leaf area index of a canopy is sufficiently high. However, there is no field observational evidence to test this hypothesis. We investigated the spectral composition of downward and upward solar radiation at multiple heights within a temperate larch forest and reconstructed light absorption profiles at three representative wavelengths. With increasing depths from the top of the canopy, absorption of red (680 nm) and green light (550 nm) decreased; but the latter decreased more gradually. Consequently, absorption of green light surpassed that of red light after an equilibrium point (e.g., 19.5 m height above the ground at high sun angles under clear skies) was reached. Absorptance of green light by the canopy (0.5–22 m) was 93.3 %, only slightly lower than that of red (95.0 %) and blue light (460 nm, 93.6 %). Moreover, absorption of green light decreased more gradually and the lower part of the canopy absorbed more green light at low sun angles and under overcast skies, in comparison with those at high sun angles under clear skies. Our results demonstrate that forest canopy can efficiently absorb green light. This finding calls for reconsideration on the role of green light in canopy photosynthesis and photomorphogenesis. The hotspot effect, which refers to the increased reflectance in the solar direction, relies on the canopy structure. Numerous bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models have been developed with careful attention to the hotspot effect. However, different assumptions may lead to very different shapes of BRDF, especially in the hotspot direction. With the development of high-resolution remote sensing satellites and three-dimensional (3D) mapping technologies, abundant 3D structural vegetation canopy information is available. However, traditional analytical models might not fully use these kinds of information. As a result, most of them are still very limited by their assumptions, such as the shape and spatial distribution of crowns. One BRDF model may do well only for one vegetation type and shows significant errors under other scenarios. We propose a new model named PATH_RT, which can model the hotspot effect at both the leaf and crown levels using the path length distribution (PLD). PLD can be easily obtained with the 3D information of the canopy at given remote sensing geometries. We validated the bi-directional reflectance factor (BRF) predicted by the PATH_RT model with the simulated scenes and field measurements which were produced by a 3D radiative transfer model LESS and UAV observations respectively. Compared to traditional analytical models SAILH, 4SAIL2, GORT, and 5SCALE, the PATH_RT model exhibits the highest accuracy, reducing the average RMSE by 86%, 66%, 52%, and 58% for the hotspot region respectively. PATH_RT accurately depicts the hotspot effects at the canopy and leaf levels and is highly efficient (99%, 75%, 86%, 99%, and 99% less time spent for one repeat run compared to LESS, SAILH, 4SAIL2, GORT, and 5SCALE models, respectively). Terrestrial LiDAR (TLS) instruments have great capability to describe canopy structure with unprecedented levels of detail in plot-scale forest measurement. However, in most cases, only parts of the trees within the sample plot are scanned due to occlusion effects from the other trees in the direction of the laser beam. These obstructions cause incomplete observation and missing features, resulting in the underestimation of tree attributes. Typical data acquisition with multi-scan mode seeks to mitigate occlusion effect and then provide almost full coverage of plot. The density of scan stations is determined by plot size, the density of plants and the metrics to be measured. Currently, the determination of density and locations of multiple scans depends on surveyor's experience and is lack of scientific protocols, generally, causing data redundancy and low efficiency of measurement, e.g. time cost in moving devices and scan registration. In fact, the occlusion effect primarily comes from the unknown complex spatial pattern of trees in natural forest conditions. UAVs are able to map the spatial locations of trees and are expected to provide basic knowledge for the optimization of TLS sampling pattern in forest conditions. The focus of this study is on strategies to derive multi-scan locations over forest plots. A novel chain-mode optimization of TLS sampling pattern was designed to maximize visibility of trees with minimum scans, hence improving the data quality and the efficiency of measurement. We proposed three basic optimization rules: (1) scan candidates prefer to locate on those positions undergoing low occlusion effect; (2) cumulative angular sampling (CAS) of each tree scanned from several directions satisfies the requirement user defined; (3) scan locations are uniformly distributed. In the implementation, 2D visibility analysis is firstly conducted for all the trees, simplified as circles in a plot, based on tree location map derived from UAV images. This step aims to find locally optimal scan locations following the first rule. Secondly, the CAS of each tree is geometrically computed. This step is devoted to select those trees requiring more scans to meet user level following the second rule. Thirdly, the former two steps are consecutively repeated in consideration of the third rule, only for those selected trees, until the CAS of each tree meets the user's requirements. Through two simulated forest plots where trees respectively distributed follow a spatial random pattern and a row-spaced pattern, the proposed chain-mode scans yielded comparable data quality with regular scans whereas the efficiency is improved by up to 30%. Reliable tree canopy cover (TCC) products are vital for national forest inventory, land process modeling and forest dynamic monitoring. The new generation of space-based laser altimeter, GEDI, offers a three-dimensional (3D) insight on the forest structure, shaping the paradigm of structural variable estimation. However, the generality of newly released GEDI level-2 TCC product version 2 was less investigated across various forest types. Additionally, satellite-derived product validation usually suffers from the geolocation mismatch between satellite and reference data. In this study, we comprehensively validated the GEDI TCC product across seven forest types using the reference TCC derived from several public and private aerial LiDAR datasets after geographical registration, and crossly compared with a commonly-used passive satellite product (i.e., GFCC TCC). As the reference aerial TCC maps were derived using various aerial LiDAR instruments, we investigated the consistency of TCC estimation among them using simulation datasets and found that the distributions of TCC relative bias (biasR, %) were almost identical and the differences of relative RMSE (rRMSE, %) was less than 0.2%. Through the registration process, we found that the geolocation offsets of GEDI footprints tended to be independent of azimuth directions and their average was about 10 m, verifying the necessity of registration during the validation process. Importantly, the post-registration validation of GEDI TCC showed an average RMSE of 0.10 and an average R2 of 0.85 for all forest types, resulting in a decrease of RMSE of up to 0.15 and an increase of R2 of up to 0.33 compared to the pre-registration validation. The inter-comparison also exhibited improved consistency between GEDI and GFCC TCC products after registration. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a widely used technology for the acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) information about a wide variety of physical objects and environments. However, before conducting a campaign, a test is typically conducted to assess the potential of the utilized algorithm for information retrieval. It might not be a real campaign but rather a simulation to save time and costs. Here, a multi-platform LiDAR simulation model considering the location, direction, and wavelength of each emitted laser pulse was developed based on the large-scale remote sensing (RS) data and image simulation framework (LESS) model, which is a 3D radiative transfer model for simulating passive optical remote sensing signals using the ray tracing algorithm. The LESS LiDAR simulator took footprint size, returned energy, multiple scattering, and multispectrum LiDAR into account. The waveform and point similarity were assessed with the LiDAR module of the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer (DART) model. Abstract and realistic scenes were designed to assess the simulated LiDAR waveforms and point clouds. A waveform comparison in the abstract scene with the DART LiDAR module showed that the relative error was lower than 1%. In the realistic scene, airborne and terrestrial laser scanning were simulated by LESS and DART LiDAR modules. Their coefficients of determination ranged from 0.9108 to 0.9984 . Their mean was 0.9698 . The number of discrete returns fitted well and the coefficient of determination was 0.9986 . A terrestrial point cloud comparison in the realistic scene showed that the coefficient of determination between the two sets of data could reach 0.9849 . The performance of the LESS LiDAR simulator was also compared with the DART LiDAR module and HELIOS++. The results showed that the LESS LiDAR simulator is over three times faster than the DART LiDAR module and HELIOS++ when simulating terrestrial point clouds in a realistic scene. The proposed LiDAR simulator offers two modes for simulating point clouds: single-ray and multi-ray modes. The findings demonstrate that utilizing a single-ray simulation approach can significantly reduce the simulation time, by over 28 times, without substantially affecting the overall point number or ground pointswhen compared to employing multiple rays for simulations. This new LESS model integrating a LiDAR simulator has great potential in terms of simultaneously simulating LiDAR data and optical images based on the same 3D scene and parameters. As a proof of concept, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) results from multispectral images and the vertical profiles from multispectral LiDAR waveforms were simulated and analyzed. The sky view factor (SVF) is a crucial variable widely used to quantify the characteristics of surface structures and estimate surface radiation budget. Many SVF models based on raster data have been developed but not yet evaluated in a more quantitative and uniform manner. In this paper, four typical SVF models (Dozier‐Frew (D‐F), Manners, Lindberg‐Grimmond (L‐G), and Helbig_h) are evaluated using the SVF derived from simulated fisheye images based on the digital surface model (DSM) and digital elevation model data. The SVF calculated by D‐F method using DSM data has the best accuracy, with a mean bias error of −0.007, root‐mean‐square error of 0.069, and coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.914. For the SVF value derived from digital elevation model data, L‐G method shows good performance, with an mean bias error of 0.013, root‐mean‐square error of 0.032, and R2 of 0.897. The pixels near the edges of buildings, within the valley or along ridgelines, have higher SVF deviations. In addition, the slope angle calculated using DSM data has some artificial defects that make the significant impact on the SVF biases due to their calculation method and the discontinuous surface in urban areas. Thus, L‐G and Helbig_h methods are more applicable for the DSM data due to the difficulty in defining slope and aspect angles. Moreover, the high accordance of SVFs between Helbig_h and L‐G methods implies that the Helbig_h method is an alternative in virtue of its simpler form and lower computation cost than L‐G method. Plain Language Summary: Four typical sky view factor (SVF) models are evaluated and compared using simulated SVF data based on two kinds of raster terrain data to estimate models' accuracies and their different spatial characteristics. They show that different calculation accuracies and large SVF bias are mainly near the edges of buildings, along the valley and ridgeline. The slope angle can cause larger SVF biases than the aspect angle, and the influence on the SVF derived from DSM data is more significant than that derived from digital elevation model data. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data can provide 3D structural information of objects and are ideal for extracting individual tree parameters, and individual tree segmentation (ITS) is a vital step for this purpose. Various ITS methods have been emerging from airborne LiDAR scanning (ALS) or unmanned aerial vehicle LiDAR scanning (ULS) data. Here, we propose a new individual tree segmentation method, which couples the classical and efficient watershed algorithm (WS) and the newly developed connection center evolution (CCE) clustering algorithm in pattern recognition. The CCE is first used in ITS and comprehensively optimized by considering tree structure and point cloud characteristics. Firstly, the amount of data is greatly reduced by mean shift voxelization. Then, the optimal clustering scale is automatically determined by the shapes in the projection of three different directions. We select five forest plots in Saihanba, China and 14 public plots in Alpine region, Europe with ULS or ALS point cloud densities from 11 to 3295 pts/m2. Eleven ITS methods were used for comparison. The accuracy of tree top detection and tree height extraction is estimated by five and two metrics, respectively. The results show that the matching rate (Rmatch) of tree tops is up to 0.92, the coefficient of determination (R2) of tree height estimation is up to.94, and the minimum root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.6 m. Our method outperforms the other methods especially in the broadleaf forests plot on slopes, where the five evaluation metrics for tree top detection outperformed the other algorithms by at least 11% on average. Our ITS method is both robust and efficient and has the potential to be used especially in coniferous forests to extract the structural parameters of individual trees for forest management, carbon stock estimation, and habitat mapping. Shortwave radiation (0.3–3.0 μm) is a dominant component of land surface all-wave radiation budget. Reliable estimation of shortwave radiation throughout the globe is particularly important for an in-depth understanding of global changes. Unfortunately, a large number of existing space-based algorithms ignore the effects of topography by simply assuming that the surface is ideally flat. As pointed out by many studies, such neglect toward topographic effects leads to significant errors in derived radiation. This study proposes a shortwave topographic radiation model (SWTRM) by quantifying solar direct radiation shielding, occlusion of sky radiation, reflected radiation from nearby terrain, and invisibility of certain targets. To drive the SWTRM, an artificial neural network (ANN) approach was employed to generate multiple components of the shortwave radiation budget. The new model was run over the Tibetan Plateau region and used MODIS products coupled with digital elevation data (DEM). Topographically corrected shortwave fluxes were derived by coupling SWTRM and ANN outputs. The results show that: (1) the proposed SWTRM works well over mountainous regions; (2) the ANN-based shortwave model provides reasonable retrieval accuracy (RMSE < 60 W/m 2 , bias < 13 W/m 2 for all shortwave radiation components). More importantly, the ANN model can simultaneously provide all radiation components that are indispensable for driving the SWTRM; (3) over mountainous areas, the induced error can exceed 600 W/m 2 for shortwave net flux. Hence, topographic effects cannot be neglected; and (4) topography and solar illumination angle are key modulators in deriving shortwave radiation from space, which control the magnitude and spatial distribution of shortwave radiation over mountainous regions. Based on the strict radiative transfer algorithm, a new method is developed to derive the precipitable water vapor (PWV) and aerosol optical depth (AOD) from the ground-based direct sun irradiance measurements. The attenuated direct irradiance from 300 to 1700 nm was measured by a pair of grating spectroradiometers, MS711 and MS712 produced by EKO Instruments, located at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beijing (39.98 ∘ N, 116.38 ∘ E), from June 2020 to March 2021. Compared with regular sun photometers such as CE-318 and POM, EKO instruments can measure a wider range of continuous spectra, but their field of view (FOV) is also relatively large. In the PWV inversion of this work, a strong water vapor absorption band around 1370 nm is introduced to retrieve PWV in a relatively dry atmosphere. The circumsolar radiation (CSR) of the EKO instruments is corrected to reduce the influence of scattering from a relatively larger FOV on the AOD inversion. The PWV and AOD inversion results obtained by MS711 and MS712 are compared with the synchronous data of the CE-318 sun photometer. The two retrieval results are highly consistent. The correlation coefficient, mean bias, and standard deviation of PWVEKO and PWVCIMEL are 0.999, -0.027 cm (-2.42 %), and 0.054 cm (3.93 %), respectively, and the relative deviations of the differences between the two are slightly larger for drier air (PWV < 0.5 cm) and lower solar elevation angle. The correlation coefficients of AODEKO and AODCIMEL at 380, 440, 500, 675, 870, and 1020 nm are greater than 0.99, and the relative deviations vary between -6.59 % and 4.27 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As China has recently launched the GaoFen-1 satellite (GF-1) carrying on the wide-field view (WFV) sensor, it is a challenging task to make full use of its observations to produce the fractional vegetation cover (FVC). In light of this, our study presents a comprehensive algorithm to generate a 16 m/10-day FVC product by considering the vegetation types characteristics. For forests, considering the foliage clumping effect, FVC was estimated from the gap probability theory using GF-1 leaf area index (LAI) and clumping index (CI) as a priori knowledge; for non-forests, FVC was estimated from the dimidiate pixel model using GF-1 normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The performance of GF-1 FVC from 2018 to 2020 was evaluated using FVC ground measurements obtained from 7 sites for crops, grasslands, and forests in China. The direct validation indicated that the performance of the FVC product was satisfactory, as evidenced by R2 = 0.55, RMSE = 0.15 and BIAS = 0.01 for all vegetation types. Furthermore, the GF-1 FVC exhibited better performance compared to the GEOV3 FVC at a spatial resolution of 300 meters. Moreover, the 10-day temporal interval of GF-1 FVC product successfully facilitated the extraction of regional phenological information at a spatial resolution of 16 meters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• 3D RT simulations are used to assess the VI performance for estimating forest chlorophyll concentration. • Influences of saturation effect, soil backgrounds, and leaf area index disturbance on the chlorophyll concentration retrieval are evaluated. • Concern about decoupling vegetation canopy structure and spectral information. Remote-sensed vegetation indices (VIs) have emerged as essential tools for retrieving forest chlorophyll concentration. Although VIs are widely used, some concerns regarding VIs for estimating chlorophyll remain to be addressed, such as saturation effect, leaf area index (LAI) disturbance, and soil brightness influence. Currently, a systematic study on such performance evaluation of chlorophyll-related VIs considering these issues is still insufficient. This study coupled two radiative transfer models, the PROSPECT model and the LESS model, to simulate Eucalyptus monocultures with different chlorophyll content and systematically evaluated the 18 broad-band VIs' ability in chlorophyll estimation at different scales. Our results indicate that most VIs designed for chlorophyll estimation were relatively resistant to saturation, except for SIPI and some classical VIs (e.g., NDVI and DVI), which were insensitive to chlorophyll decreases and tended to reach saturation quickly (when leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) exceeded 40 ug/cm2). The relationships between NDVI, SR, DVI, and LCC were easily influenced by soil brightness and LAI. S2REP, MTCI, TGI, TCARI, and EVI were insensitive to soil brightness when estimating LCC. Overall, S2REP was best at quantitatively retrieving chlorophyll and resisting interference from other factors. For practical applications, our study suggests that it is preferable to use S2REP for LCC estimation when the red-edge band is available; otherwise, CVI can be used instead. The judicious utilization of VI can effectively depict chlorophyll levels and improve the understanding of vegetation response to climate change. Accurate leaf area index (LAI) measurements are important for understanding and evaluating global mass and energy cycle. Foliage clumping serves an important function in traditional indirect LAI measurement methods. The clumping index has been used to modify effective LAI for decades. However, the change in path length within canopies is often the most uncertain factor in indirect LAI estimation using Beer's law. A simple clumping index is incapable of describing the heterogeneity of a canopy and may cause large errors in calculating true LAI values. We proposed a new LAI estimation method by using path length distribution functions in optical measurement. Both simulation and field measurements show that the path length-based method can effectively characterize the LAI values of heterogeneous canopies. Deviation is less than 10% for all the validations. One of the advantages of path length distribution theory is that it can characterize and handle crown shape-induced non-randomness within canopies. Such non-randomness, which may cause underestimation of up to 25%, has not been well addressed by existing algorithms. The availability of these experimental datasets allows researchers to develop physical models to replicate and understand remote sensing observations, to develop innovative retrieval algorithms for remote sensing products and to enhance their applications in Earth system science. Remote sensing observations with a physical connection to the evolution of atmosphere, land and ocean variables will promote the incorporation of remote sensing into Earth system research. Coincidentally, a comprehensive remote sensing experiment involving carbon, water and energy cycle studies was conducted in China, including a special soil moisture experiment in the Luan River in 2018 (SMELR18; Zhao et al. Estimation of downward shortwave radiation (DSR) is of great importance in global energy budget and climatic modeling. Although various algorithms have been proposed, effective validation methods are absent for rugged terrains due to the lack of rigorous methodology and reliable field measurements. We propose a two-step validation method for rugged terrains based on computer simulations. The first step is to perform point-to-point validation at local scale. Time-series measurements were applied to evaluate a three-dimensional (3-D) radiative transfer model. The second step is to validate the DSR at pixel-scale. A semiempirical model was built up to interpolate and upscale the DSR. Key terrain parameters were weighted by empirical coefficients retrieved from ground-based observations. The optimum number and locations of ground stations were designed by the 3-D radiative transfer model and Monte Carlo method. Four ground stations were selected to upscale the ground-based observations. Additional three ground stations were set up to validate the interpolated results. The upscaled DSR was finally applied to validate the satellite products provided by MODIS and Himawari-8. The results showed that the modeled and observed DSR exhibited good consistency at point scale with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.995. The average error was around 20 W/m2 for the interpolated DSR and 10 W/m2 for the upscaled DSR in theory. The accuracies of the satellite products were acceptable at most times, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.94. Vegetation cover estimation for overstory and understory layers provides valuable information for modeling forest carbon and water cycles and refining forest ecosystem function assessment. Although previous studies demonstrated the capability of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) in the three-dimensional (3D) characterization of forest overstory and understory communities, the high cost inhibits its application in frequent and successive survey tasks. Low-cost commercial red–green–blue (RGB) cameras mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as LiDAR alternatives, provide operational systems for simultaneously quantifying overstory crown cover (OCC) and understory vegetation cover (UVC). We developed an effective method named back-projection of 3D point cloud onto superpixel-segmented image (BAPS) to extract overstory and forest floor pixels using 3D structure-from-motion (SfM) point clouds and two-dimensional (2D) superpixel segmentation. The OCC was estimated from the extracted overstory crown pixels. A reported method, called half-Gaussian fitting (HAGFVC), was used to segement green vegetation and non-vegetation pixels from the extracted forest floor pixels and derive UVC. The UAV-based RGB imagery and field validation data were collected from eight forest plots in Saihanba National Forest Park (SNFP) plantation in northern China. The consistency of the OCC estimates between BAPS and canopy height model (CHM)-based methods (coefficient of determination: 0.7171) demonstrated the capability of the BAPS method in the estimation of OCC. The segmentation of understory vegetation was verified by the supervised classification (SC) method. The validation results showed that the OCC and UVC estimates were in good agreement with reference values, where the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of OCC (unitless) and UVC (unitless) reached 0.0704 and 0.1144, respectively. Green fractional vegetation cover (f c) is an important phenotypic factor in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and ecology. Spatially explicit monitoring of f c via relative vegetation abundance (RA) algorithms, especially those based on scaled maximum/minimum vegetation index (VI) values, has been widely investigated in remote sensing research. Although many studies have explored the effectiveness of RA algorithms over the past 30 years, a literature review summarizing the corresponding theoretical background, issues, current state-of-the-art techniques, challenges, and prospects has not yet been published. The overall objective of the present study was to accomplish a comprehensive and systematic review of RA algorithms considering these factors based on the scientific papers published from January 1990 to November 2019. This review revealed that the key issues related to RA algorithms is the determination of the appropriate normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values of the full vegetation cover and bare soil (denoted hereafter by NDVI ∞ and NDVI s , respectively). The existing methods used to correct for these issues were investigated, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed in depth. In literature trends, we found that the number of reported studies in which RA algorithms were used has increased consistently over time, and that most authors tend to utilize the linear NDVI model, rather than other models in the RA algorithm family. We also found that RA algorithms have been utilized to analyze the images with spatial resolutions ranging from the sub-meter to kilometer, most commonly, using images of 30-m spatial resolution. Remote sensing via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is becoming a very important tool for augmenting traditional spaceborne and airborne remote sensing techniques. Commercial RGB cameras are often the payload on UAVs, because they are inexpensive, easy to operate and require little data processing. RGB images are increasingly being used for mapping of fractional vegetation cover (FVC). However, the presence of significantly mixed pixels in close-range RGB images prevents the accurate estimation of FVC. Even where pixel unmixing is applied, limited quantitative spectral information and colour variability within these images could lead to profound errors and uncertainties. This paper proposes a colour mixture analysis (CMA) method based on the Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) colour space to alleviate the above-mentioned concerns, thereby improving the accuracy and efficiency of FVC estimation from UAV-captured RGB images. First, the a priori colour information of the pure vegetation and background endmembers are extracted from the Hue channel of the UAV proximal sensing images, obviating ground-based image capture and the attendant cost and inconvenience. Second, the relationship between the probability distribution of mixed pixels and that of the two endmembers is estimated. Finally, we estimate FVC from UAV remote sensing images with a maximum a posteriori parameter (MAP) estimator. Two UAV-captured RGB image datasets and a synthetic RGB image dataset were used to test the new method. CMA was compared with three other FVC estimation algorithms, namely, FCLS, HAGFVC and LAB2. The FVC estimates by CMA were found to be highly accurate, with root mean squared errors (RMSE) of less than 0.007 and mean absolute error (MAE) of less than 0.01 for both field datasets. The accuracy was shown to be superior to that of all three algorithms. A comprehensive analysis of the estimation accuracy under various spatial resolutions and vegetation cover levels was conducted using both field and synthetic datasets. Results show that the CMA method can robustly and accurately estimate FVC across the full range of vegetation coverage and various resolutions. Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of colour variability due to heterogeneity and shadow were also tested. Overall, CMA was shown to be robust to variation in colour and illumination. Optical indirect methods based on the Beer-Lambert law are widely adopted in numerous fields given their high efficiency and feasibility for LAI estimation. These methods have undergone considerable progress in the past decades, thereby making them operational in ground-based LAI measurement and even in airborne estimation. However, several challenges remain, given the requirement of increasing accuracy and new applications. Clumping effect correction attained significant progress for continuous canopies with non-randomly disturbed leaves while non-continuous canopies are rarely studied. Convenient and operational measurement of leaf angle distribution and woody components is lacked. Accurate and comprehensive validations are still very difficult due to the limitations of direct measurement. The introduction of active laser scanning technology is a driving force for addressing several challenges, but its three-dimensional information has not been fully explored and utilized. In order to update the general knowledge and identify the possible error source, this study comprehensively reviews the temporal development, theoretical framework, and issues of indirect LAI measurement, followed by current methods, instruments, and platforms. Latest methods and instruments are introduced and compared to traditional ones. Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer modeling of the transport and interaction of radiation through earth surfaces is challenging due to the complexity of the landscapes as well as the intensive computational cost of 3D radiative transfer simulations. To reduce computation time, current models work with schematic landscapes or with small-scale realistic scenes. The computer graphics community provides the most accurate and efficient models (known as renderers) but they were not designed specifically for performing scientific radiative transfer simulations. In this study, we propose LESS, a new 3D radiative transfer modeling framework. LESS employs a weighted forward photon tracing method to simulate multispectral bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) or flux-related data (e.g., downwelling radiation) and a backward path tracing method to generate sensor images (e.g., fisheye images) or large-scale (e.g. 1 km2) spectral images. The backward path tracing also has been extended to simulate thermal infrared radiation by using an on-the-fly computation of the sunlit and shaded scene components. This framework is achieved through the development of a user-friendly graphic user interface (GUI) and a set of tools to help construct the landscape and set parameters. The accuracy of LESS is evaluated with other models as well as field measurements in terms of directional BRFs and pixel-wise simulated image comparisons, which shows very good agreement. LESS has the potential in simulating datasets of realistically reconstructed landscapes. Such simulated datasets can be used as benchmarks for various applications in remote sensing, forestry investigation and photogrammetry. Estimation of daily downward shortwave radiation (DSR) is of great importance in global energy budget and climatic modeling. The combination of satellite-based instantaneous measurements and temporal extrapolation models is the most feasible way to capture daily radiation variations at large scales. However, previous studies did not pay enough attention to topographic effects and simple temporal extrapolation methods were applied directly to rugged terrains which cover a large amount of the land surface. This paper, divided into two parts, aims at analyzing the topographic uncertainties of existing models and proposing a better method based on a mountain radiative transfer (MRT) model to calculate daily DSR. As the first part, this paper analyze the spatiotemporal variations of DSR influenced by topographic effects and checks the applicability of three temporal extrapolation methods on cloud-free days. Considering that clouds also have a strong influence on solar radiation, cloud-free days are chosen for targeted analysis of topographic effects on DSR. Three indices, the coefficient of variation, entropy-based dispersion coefficient (CH), and sill of semivariogram, are put forward to give a quantitative description of spatial heterogeneity. Our results show that the topography can dramatically strengthen the spatial heterogeneity of DSR. The index, CH, has an advantage for quantifying spatial heterogeneity as it offers a tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency. Spatial heterogeneity distorts the daily variation of DSR. Application of extrapolation methods in rugged terrains leads to overestimation of daily average DSR up to 60 W/m2 and a maximum 200 W/m2 error of instantaneous DSR on cloud-free days. The airborne laser scanner (ALS) provides great potential for mapping the leaf area index (LAI) at the landscape scale using grid cell statistics, while its application is restricted by the lack of clumping information, which has been an unsolved issue highlighted for a long time. ALS generally provides an effective LAI because its footprint is too large to capture small gaps to apply traditional ground-based clumping correction methods. Here, we present a grid cell method based on path length distribution model to calculate the clumping-corrected LAI using ALS data without the requirement of additional field measurements. We separated the within- and between-crown areas to consider between-crown clumping, and used the path length distribution as estimated by local canopy height distribution to consider 3-D foliage profile and within-crown clumping. The path length distribution model takes advantage of the 3-D information rather than the gap size distribution, thus avoiding the limitation of large ALS footprint. With the 0.4-m-footprint ALS data, the results are generally promising and a multilevel clumping analysis is consistent with landscape flown. The ALS LAIs of different resolutions are consistent, with a difference of less than 5% from 5- to 250-m resolutions. Due to its consistency and simple configuration, the method provides an opportunity to map the clumping-corrected LAI operationally and strengthens the ability of airborne lidar to monitor vegetation change and validate the satellite product. Surface shortwave (SW) irradiation is the primary driving force of energy exchange in the atmosphere and land interface. The global climate is profoundly influenced by irradiation changes due to the special climatic condition in Antarctica. Remote-sensing retrieval can offer only the instantaneous values in an area, whilst daily cycle and average values are necessary for further studies and applications, including climate change, ecology, and land surface process. When considering the large values of and small diurnal changes of solar zenith angle and cloud coverage, we develop two methods for the temporal extension of remotely sensed downward SW irradiance over Antarctica. The first one is an improved sinusoidal method, and the second one is an interpolation method based on cloud fraction change. The instantaneous irradiance data and cloud products are used in both methods to extend the diurnal cycle, and obtain the daily average value. Data from South Pole and Georg von Neumayer stations are used to validate the estimated value. The coefficient of determination (R2) between the estimated daily averages and the measured values based on the first method is 0.93, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is 32.21 W/m2 (8.52%). As for the traditional sinusoidal method, the R2 and RMSE are 0.68 and 70.32 W/m2 (18.59%), respectively The R2 and RMSE of the second method are 0.96 and 25.27 W/m2 (6.98%), respectively. An automatic fractional vegetation cover (FVC) estimation method based on image characteristics in an agricultural region was proposed in this study to remove the empiricism in determining the key parameters of empirical methods. The proposed method automatically determined the soil and vegetation lines in the two-dimensional space of the red and blue band reflectances, which involved an iterative soil and vegetation pixels selection procedure, and then estimated FVC of a pixel based on its distances from the soil and vegetation lines. The accuracy assessment using field survey data indicated that the performance of the proposed method (R2 = 0.69, RMSE = 0.072, Bias = 0.014) was comparable with several commonly used empirical methods. Landscape heterogeneity is a common natural phenomenon but is seldom considered in current radiative transfer (RT) models for predicting the surface reflectance. This paper developed an analytical RT model for heterogeneous Agro-Forestry scenarios (RTAF) by dividing the scenario into nonboundary regions (NRs) and boundary regions (BRs). The scattering contribution of the NRs can be estimated from the scattering-by-arbitrarily-inclined-leaves-with-the-hot-spot-effect model as homogeneous canopies, whereas that of the BRs is calculated based on the bidirectional gap probability by considering the interactions and mutual shadowing effects among different patches. The multiangular airborne observations and discrete-anisotropic-RT model simulations were used to validate and evaluate the RTAF model over an agro-forestry scenario in the Heihe River Basin, China. The results suggest that the RTAF model can accurately simulate the hemispherical–directional reflectance factors (HDRFs) of the heterogeneous scenarios in the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands. The boundary effect can significantly influence the angular distribution of the HDRFs and consequently enlarge the HDRF variations between the backward and forward directions. Compared with the widely used dominant cover type (DCT) and spectral linear mixture (SLM) models, the RTAF model reduced the maximum relative error from 25.7% (SLM) and 23.0% (DCT) to 9.8% in the red band and from 19.6% (DCT) and 13.7% (SLM) to 8.7% in the NIR band. The RTAF model provides a promising way to improve the retrieval of biophysical parameters (e.g., leaf area index) from remote sensing data over heterogeneous agro-forestry scenarios. Longwave radiation (5–100 μm) is a critical component of the Earth's radiation budget. Most of the existing satellite-based retrieval algorithms are valid only for flat surfaces without accounting for topographic effects. This causes significant errors. Meanwhile, the fixed spatial resolution of remote sensing data makes it difficult to link the satellite-derived longwave radiation to different land models running on various scales. These deficiencies result in an urgent need for topographic modeling and spatial scaling studies of longwave radiation. In this paper, a longwave topographic radiation model (LWTRM) is proposed that quantifies all possible radiation-affecting factors over rugged terrain. For driving the LWTRM, a hybrid method for simultaneously deriving multiple components of longwave radiation from MODIS data is suggested based on artificial neuron networks (ANN) and the radiative transfer simulation. Topographically corrected longwave radiation is then derived by coupling the ANN outputs and LWTRM. Based on this, a general upscaling strategy for longwave radiation is presented. The results demonstrate that: (1) both the proposed LWTRM and the upscaling strategy are rather effective and work well over rugged areas; (2) the ANN-based retrieval method can produce longwave radiation with better accuracy(RMSE < 23 W/m 2 , bias < 9 W/m 2 ). More importantly, it can simultaneously derive multiple components of longwave radiation in a consistent manner; (3) over mountainous areas, the radiation cannot be accurately characterized in terms of either spatial distribution or specific values if topographic effects are neglected, for instance, the induced error can reach up to 100 W/m 2 for the longwave net flux; and (4) the topographic effects cannot be ignored below spatial scale of approximately 5 km in the selected study area. The Complicate Observations and Multi-Parameter Land Information Constructions on Allied Telemetry Experiment (COMPLICATE) comprises a network of remote sensing experiments designed to enhance the dynamic analysis and modeling of remotely sensed information for complex land surfaces. Two types of experimental campaigns were established under the framework of COMPLICATE. The first was designed for continuous and elaborate experiments. The experimental strategy helps enhance our understanding of the radiative and scattering mechanisms of soil and vegetation and modeling of remotely sensed information for complex land surfaces. To validate the methodologies and models for dynamic analyses of remote sensing for complex land surfaces, the second campaign consisted of simultaneous satellite-borne, airborne, and ground-based experiments. During field campaigns, several continuous and intensive observations were obtained. Measurements were undertaken to answer key scientific issues, as follows: 1) Determine the characteristics of spatial heterogeneity and the radiative and scattering mechanisms of remote sensing on complex land surfaces. 2) Determine the mechanisms of spatial and temporal scale extensions for remote sensing on complex land surfaces. 3) Determine synergist inversion mechanisms for soil and vegetation parameters using multi-mode remote sensing on complex land surfaces. Here, we introduce the background, the objectives, the experimental designs, the observations and measurements, and the overall advances of COMPLICATE. Canopy radiative transfer (RT) modeling is critical for the quantitative retrieval of vegetation biophysical parameters and has been under intensive research over the decades. RT models of discontinuous canopies, such as three-dimensional (3D) RT models, posed challenges for the early one-dimensional (1D) hypothesis. Although 3D RT models have higher accuracy, theoretically, they suffer from two problems: detailed scene parameters and complex computational steps. To overcome these problems, the stochastic radiative transfer (SRT) theory, which is known to have the accuracy of 3D RT while being as simple as 1D RT, has been adapted from atmospheric research to the study of vegetation canopies. While the SRT model has been adopted into the operational production of vegetation parameters, its accuracy needs further improvement because of the insufficient consideration of hotspot effects. Additionally, the evaluation and validation of SRT process are still preliminary, which hinders its further development and application. To provide the community with missing information and a scientific basis for subsequent model improvement, we modified, evaluated, and validated the SRT model in this study. First, we proposed the new version of SRT model to better achieve the coupling of SRT process and hotspot effect by dividing the previous SRT into four subproblems. Then, we evaluated the performance of the modified SRT by comparing multiple intermediate variables in the SRT process with 3D computer simulations, and analyzed the model sensitivity to key input parameters as well as the spatial distribution and conservation of radiation energy. Our findings reconfirmed that the SRT theory can well describe the radiation regime of discontinuous canopies with balanced efficiency and accuracy. Moreover, the newly proposed coupling scheme of hotspot effect further improves the model performance in the hotspot regions. Finally, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) observations served as a reference to validate the modeled canopy reflectance, which shows a high concordance. Accurate spectral calibration of the in-flight sensors is crucial for processing and exploration of remotely sensed data. This paper developed a strategy to make spectral recalibration (i.e., spectral response function, central wavelength, and bandwidth) for in-flight broadband sensor using a device-responsivity-decomposition model with a priori knowledge and an optimization algorithm. Sensitivity analysis indicates that an accurate result requires the targets to be observed under a dry and clear atmospheric condition (column water vapor <2\ \g/cm^2 and visibility > 23 km) and no more than 5 \% error is included in the measured data. The new strategy was used to retrieve the spectral parameters along with radiometric calibration coefficients for a multichannel camera onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle from simultaneously remotely sensed and ground measured data sets over 19 (15 color-scaled and four gray-scaled) man-made surface targets, and the retrieved results were validated with a similar data set over another four man-made targets. Accurate radiometric and spectral calibrations of hyperspectral remote sensing instruments are essential for optimum data processing and exploitation. Two improved methods for the refinement of the spectral calibration of air- and spaceborne imaging spectrometers are presented in this paper. Both spectral channel position and width can be retrieved by modeling the atmospheric absorption features around 760, 940, 1140, and 2060 nm without making use of external atmospheric or surface parameters. A sensitivity analysis based on synthetic data demonstrated that, for each of the two methods, the root-mean-square errors to be expected were less than 0.18 nm for the retrieval of channel wavelength center and less than 0.8 nm for channel full-width at half-maximum. The application of the proposed methods to a real Hyperion data set showed quite-similar cross-track variations in the spectral calibration for the two methods, although relatively large differences in magnitude were found near the 940- and 1140-nm \H2\O absorption features. The significant improvement of the reflectance spectra derived after the refinement of the instrument spectral calibration confirms the good performance of the proposed methods. Analysis Ready Data (ARD) has been greatly recommended by the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) for simplifying and fostering long time series analysis at large scale with minimum additional user effort. Landsat ARD has been successfully made and widely used for large scale analysis. Subsequently, the Chinese satellite data similar to Landsat data have been processed and will be processed into ARDs to promote the use of the Chinese satellite data. At the first stage of the mission, the 4 Wide Field Viewing (WFV) data on GaoFen 1 (GF1) covering the whole of China and the surrounding areas have been processed into ARD. The ARD is provided as standard tiles under a common and unified projection with per pixel quality assurance and metadata for tracing back and further processing data, which are finally stored into a Hierarchical Data File (HDF); furthermore, all spectral bands are georegistered and radiometrically cross-calibrated as top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and are atmospherically corrected as surface reflectance (SR). Leaf angle distribution (LAD) is an important attribute of forest canopy architecture and affects the solar radiation regime within the canopy. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has been increasingly used in LAD estimation. The point clouds data suffer from the occlusion effect, which leads to incomplete scanning and depends on measurement strategies such as the number of scans and scanner location. Evaluating these factors is important to understand how to improve LAD, which is still lacking. Here, we introduce an easy way of estimating the LAD using open source software. Importantly, the influence of the occlusion effect on the LAD was evaluated by combining the proposed complete point clouds (CPCs) with the simulated data of 3D tree models of Aspen, Pin Oak and White Oak. We analyzed the effects of the point density, the number of scans and the scanner height on the LAD and G-function. Results show that: (1) the CPC can be used to evaluate the TLS-based normal vector reconstruction accuracy without an occlusion effect; (2) the accuracy is slightly affected by the normal vector reconstruction method and is greatly affected by the point density and the occlusion effect. The higher the point density (with a number of points per unit leaf area of 0.2 cm−2 to 27 cm−2 tested), the better the result is; (3) the performance is more sensitive to the scanner location than the number of scans. Increasing the scanner height improves LAD estimation, which has not been seriously considered in previous studies. Thermal anisotropy is an important phenomenon in thermal infrared remote sensing as it restricts the retrieval accuracy of surface longwave radiation (SLR). Topography is an essential controlling factor for the directionality of SLR for high-relief regions (e.g., mountain regions) where there is land surface heterogeneity and non-isothermal properties at pixel scales. However, satellite sensors can only receive radiance from a specific surface object at a small number of simultaneous viewing angles, which makes the quantitative modeling of thermal anisotropy challenging. Therefore, we developed the topographic longwave radiation model (TLRM) to describe the directionality of SLR components taking into account the variability of both subpixel topography and thermal anisotropy in high-relief regions. The reliability of TLRM was validated using the Discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer (DART) model over two typical geomorphic areas: a valley scene and a peak scene. The preliminary validation shows good agreement in terms of surface upward longwave radiance, which confirms the potential of TLRM for capturing the anisotropic patterns of land surfaces. The radiance values simulated by the DART model were first revised for the spectral mismatch. Then, they are used to correct residual deviation for TLRM using linear regressions. The root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R 2 ) were 0.830 W/(m 2 ∙ sr) and 0.746 for the valley scene, respectively, and 0.239 W/(m 2 ∙ sr) and 0.711 for the peak scene, respectively. Compared with TLRM, models that do not consider terrain effects generate significant discrepancies in high relief SLR components. The differences in downward longwave radiation can reach −60 W/ m 2 in valleys without considering terrain effects. Based on the reference of hemispherical upward longwave radiation, surface upward longwave radiation estimated by the direct estimation method had a bias of 11.41 W/ m 2 and standard deviation (STD) of 7.30 W/ m 2, while the directional upward longwave radiation had a bias of 5.99 W/m2 and STD of 4.08 W/ m 2, showing lower estimation variation. The discrepancy between surface net longwave radiation (NLR) and terrain-corrected NLR ranged between 50 and −130 W/ m 2 with clear negative biases mainly occurring in valleys. With higher spatial resolutions of remotely sensed imagery, the influence of complex terrain on land surface radiative flux has become more significant. Many studies have been focusing on reconstructing the branch skeleton of a three-dimensional (3D) tree structure that is based on photos or point clouds scanned by a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS), but leaves, as the important component of a tree, are often ignored or simplified because of their complexity. Therefore, we develop a voxel-based method to add leaves to a reconstructed 3D branches structure based on TLS point clouds. The location and size of each leaf depend on the spatial distribution and density of leaves points in the voxel. We reconstruct a small 3D scene with four realistic 3D trees and a virtual tree (including trunk, branches, and leaves), and validate the structure of each tree through the directional gap fractions calculated based on simulated point clouds of this reconstructed scene by the ray-tracing algorithm. The results show good coherence with those from measured point clouds data. The relative errors of the directional gap fractions are no more than 4.1%, though the method is limited by the effects of point occlusion. Therefore, this method is shown to give satisfactory consistency both visually and in the quantitative evaluation of the 3D structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
