The practical utilization of TiO 2 as a semiconductor in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been set back by poor visible light absorption, high charge carrier recombination, and low electrical conductivity, which reduce the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and sustainability of the device. In this respect, perovskites with excellent properties, such as large surface area, good optical properties, high electrical conductivity, and superior electrochemical stability, have recently emerged as promising alternatives capable of overcoming the drawbacks of TiO 2 . Herein, Sr 0.7 Sm 0.3 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 2.65 (SSFC) perovskites were prepared via the ball milling method at various milling times of 0, 5, and 10 h, and the obtained samples were denoted by SSFC-0, SSCF-5, and SSCF-10, respectively. Increasing the ball milling time led to a significant reduction in nanoparticle size and agglomeration, which, in turn, increased the surface area and electrical conductivity of the samples. As a consequence, the SSFC-10 perovskite exhibited the smallest average particle sizes (18.9 nm) with the largest surface area (61.8 m 2  g -1 ) and minimum defects, which allowed for efficient electron transport, resulting in the best electrical conductivity of 49.8 S cm -1 . Ultimately, DSSCs fabricated using SSFC-10 semiconductor layers achieved an optimum PCE of 6.01 %, which is an improvement of 8.67 %, 1.1 %, and 6.56 % for SSFC-0 (3.69 %), SSFC-5 (4.96 %), and TiO 2 (5.64 %), respectively. Technological advancements are leading to an upsurge in demand for functional materials that satisfy several of humankind's needs. In addition to this, the current global drive is to develop materials with high efficacy in intended applications whilst practising green chemistry principles to ensure sustainability. Carbon-based materials, such as reduced graphene oxide (RGO), in particular, can possibly meet this criterion because they can be derived from waste biomass (a renewable material), possibly synthesised at low temperatures without the use of hazardous chemicals, and are biodegradable (owing to their organic nature), among other characteristics. Additionally, RGO as a carbon-based material is gaining momentum in several applications due to its lightweight, nontoxicity, excellent flexibility, tuneable band gap (from reduction), higher electrical conductivity (relative to graphene oxide, GO), low cost (owing to the natural abundance of carbon), and potentially facile and scalable synthesis protocols. Despite these attributes, the possible structures of RGO are still numerous with notable critical variations and the synthesis procedures have been dynamic. Herein, we summarize the highlights from the historical breakthroughs in understanding the structure of RGO (from the perspective of GO) and the recent state-of-the-art synthesis protocols, covering the period from 2020 to 2023. These are key aspects in the realisation of the full potential of RGO materials through the tailoring of physicochemical properties and reproducibility. The reviewed work highlights the merits and prospects of the physicochemical properties of RGO toward achieving sustainable, environmentally friendly, low-cost, and high-performing materials at a large scale for use in functional devices/processes to pave the way for commercialisation. Due to the finite nature, health and environmental hazards currently associated with the use of fossil energy resources, there is a global drive to hasten the development and deployment of renewable energy technologies. One such area encompasses perovskite solar cells (PSCs) that have shown photoconversion efficiencies (PCE) comparable to silicon-based photovoltaics, but their commercialisation has been set back by short-term stability and toxicity issues, among others. A tremendous potential to overcome these drawbacks is presented by the emerging applications of graphene derivative-based materials in PSCs as substitutes or components, composites with other functional materials, and enhancers of charge transport, blocking action, exciton dissociation, substrate coverage, sensitisation and stabilisation. This review aims to illustrate how these highly capable carbon-based materials can advance PSCs by critically outlining and discussing their current applications and strategically identifying prospective research avenues. The reviewed works show that graphene derivatives have great potential in boosting the performance and stability of PSCs through morphological modifications and compositional engineering. Semiconductor materials have been recently employed in photovoltaic devices, particularly dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), to solve numerous global issues, especially the current energy crisis emanating from the depletion and hazardous nature of conventional energy sources, such as fossil fuels and nuclear energy. However, progress for the past years has been mainly limited by poor electron injection and charge carrier recombination experienced by DSSCs at the photoanode. Thus, novel semiconductor materials such as bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) have been investigated as an alternative photoanode material. In this study, Bi 2 O 3 was integrated with nitrogen- or boron-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO or B-rGO, respectively) via a hydrothermal approach at a temperature of 200 °C. Various instrumental techniques were used to investigate the morphology, phase structure, thermal stability, and surface area of the resulting nanocomposites. The incorporation of N-rGO or B-rGO into Bi 2 O 3 influenced the morphology and structure of the nanocomposite, thereby affecting the conductivity and electrochemical properties of the nanocomposite. B-rGO/Bi 2 O 3 exhibited a relatively large surface area (65.5 m 2 g -1 ), lower charge transfer resistance (108.4 Ω), higher charge carrier mobility (0.368 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ), and higher electrical conductivity (6.31 S cm -1 ) than N-rGO/Bi 2 O 3 . This led to the fabrication of B-rGO/Bi 2 O 3 photoanode-based DSSCs with superior photovoltaic performance, as revealed by their relatively high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.97%, which outperformed the devices based on N-rGO/Bi 2 O 3 , rGO/Bi 2 O 3, and Bi 2 O 3 photoanodes. In recent years, carbon-based materials, particularly carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have gained intensive research attention in the fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their outstanding physicochemical properties, low-cost, environmental friendliness and the natural abundance of carbon. In this regard, the low sheet resistance and high optical transmittance of CNTs enables their application as alternative anodes to the widely used indium tin oxide (ITO), which is toxic, expensive and scarce. Also, the synergy between the large specific surface area and high electrical conductivity of CNTs provides both large donor-acceptor interfaces and conductive interpenetrating networks for exciton dissociation and charge carrier transport. Furthermore, the facile tunability of the energy levels of CNTs provides proper energy level alignment between the active layer and electrodes for effective extraction and transportation of charge carriers. In addition, the hydrophobic nature and high thermal conductivity of CNTs enables them to form protective layers that improve the moisture and thermal stability of OSCs, thereby prolonging the devices' lifetime. Recently, the introduction of CNTs into OSCs produced a substantial increase in efficiency from ∼0.68 to above 14.00%. Thus, further optimization of the optoelectronic properties of CNTs can conceivably help OSCs to compete with silicon solar cells that have been commercialized. Therefore, this study presents the recent breakthroughs in efficiency and stability of OSCs, achieved mainly over 2018-2021 by incorporating CNTs into electrodes, active layers and charge transport layers. In the past few years, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have received considerable research attention, as potential alternatives to the commonly used, but expensive, silicon-based solar cells owing to the low-cost, facile fabrication procedures, less impact on the environment, capability of working even under low incoming light levels, and flexibility of DSSCs. However, the relatively low power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) and poor long-term operational stability of DSSCs still limit their large-scale and commercial applications. As a consequence, this has prompted tremendous research effort towards the realization of high performance and sustainable devices, through tailoring of the properties of the various DSSC components, via approaches such as introducing novel materials and new synthesis techniques. Among these, the application of novel materials, especially carbon-based materials, such as graphene and its derivatives, is more appealing due to their excellent optoelectronic, mechanical, thermal and chemical properties, which give them ample potential to replace or modify the traditional materials that are commonly used in the fabrication of the various DSSC components. In addition, the low-cost, abundance, non-toxicity, large specific surface area, flexibility and superior stability of graphene-based materials have enabled their recent use as photoanodes, i.e. , transparent conducting electrodes, semiconducting layers and dye-sensitizers, electrolytes and counter electrodes in DSSCs. Recently, the introduction of graphene-based materials into DSSCs resulted in a pronounced increase in PCE from ∼0.13 to above 12.00%. Thus, employing the recent breakthroughs can further improve the optoelectronic properties of the various DSSC components and, hence, close the gap between DSSCs and their silicon-based counterparts that are currently exhibiting desirable PCEs of above 26%. Therefore, this review focuses on the recent applications of graphene-based materials as photoanodes, electrolytes and counter electrodes, for the possible fabrication of all-carbon-based DSSCs.
