Background: The Japanese quail (Coturinx coturnix japonica) has a crucial role in the lives of humanity since the 12th century and continues to play main roles in our industry and scientific research. The advantages that the Japanese quail has, such as heavy egg production and high-quality meat with low cholesterol and fat contents, Moreover, the Japanese quail is easily managed, with high feeding conversion, low cost of investment, and high rate of returns. Salivary glands are a part of the lingual apparatus that secretes serios and mucous saliva. Whereas, the saliva secretions have different roles in the food variation, apprehension, and moisture of food bolus. The morphological and cytochemical analysis are done on 20 healthy Japanese quail embryos of 6th, 10th, 11th, and 13th days of incubation and 25 healthy quail chicks at hatching day old, 7th, 14th, 30th, and 60th days old. These samples are investigated histologically, histochemically, and scanned by electron microscopy serially. Our purpose of the study is to highlight the area of the oropharyngeal salivary glands and their role in food variation, as few studies spoke about that in Japanese quail. Results: The primordia of the sublingual and mandibular salivary glands were noticed at the 6th and 10th days of the prehatching respectively as an epithelial bud. After hatching, both primordia were elongated and differentiated into secretory units. These glands were mucous polystomatic tubulo-alveolar paired glands, which were situated in the submucosa of the oropharyngeal floor (sublingual floor and paralingual grooves). The sublingual glands consisted of 3–5 lobes extended from the two Os ceratobranchial by their wide ends caudally, to beyond the median sulcus of the prefrenular part of the sublingual space rostrally. The taste buds were variable in size and position. The mandibular glands lay on the paralingual groove, which arose at the 10-day old embryo. The mandibular glands were located dorsomedial to the sublingual glands and extended longitudinally from the rostral border of the frenulum linguae to the caudal tips of the sublingual glands. The taste buds decreased in volume and number with advancing age. Conclusion: Overall, salivary glands increase in their alcianophilic activity of the secretions with advancing age, which indicates low PH within the secretory end pieces. Background and Objective Methods Results Conclusion Severe asthma is a heterogeneous disease with subtype classification according to dominant airway infiltrates, including eosinophilic (Type 2 high), or non‐eosinophilic asthma. Non‐eosinophilic asthma is further divided into paucigranulocytic or neutrophilic asthma characterized by elevated neutrophils, and mixed Type 1 and Type 17 cytokines in the airways. Severe non‐eosinophilic asthma has few effective treatments and many patients do not qualify for biologic therapies. The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is dysregulated in multiple respiratory diseases including cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has proven a valuable therapeutic target. We hypothesized that the CFTR may also play a role in non‐eosinophilic asthma.Patient‐derived human bronchial epithelial cells (hBECs) were isolated and differentiated at the air‐liquid interface. Single cell RNA‐sequencing (scRNAseq) was used to identify epithelial cell subtypes and transcriptional activity. Ion transport was investigated with Ussing chambers and immunofluorescent quantification of ionocyte abundance in human airway epithelial cells and murine models of asthma.We identified that hBECs from patients with non‐eosinophilic asthma had reduced CFTR function, and did not differentiate into CFTR‐expressing ionocytes compared to those from eosinophilic asthma or healthy donors. Similarly, ionocytes were also diminished in the airways of a murine model of neutrophilic‐dominant but not eosinophilic asthma. Treatment of hBECs from healthy donors with a neutrophilic asthma‐like inflammatory cytokine mixture led to a reduction in ionocytes.Inflammation‐induced loss of CFTR‐expressing ionocytes in airway cells from non‐eosinophilic asthma may represent a key feature of disease pathogenesis and a novel drug target. Amphibians, with their unique physiology and habitat requirements, are especially vulnerable to changes in environmental temperatures. While the activation of the physiological stress response can help to mitigate the impact of such habitat alteration, chronic production of elevated glucocorticoid levels can be deleterious in nature. There is no empirical evidence indicating the physiological response of African amphibians to temperature changes, where individuals are unable to emigrate away from potential stressors. To rectify this, we used the edible bullfrog (Pyxicephalus edulis) as a model species to determine the effect of elevated temperature on the adrenocortical response of the species using a recently established matrix. While a control group was kept at a constant temperature (25 °C) throughout the study period, an experimental group was exposed to control (25 °C) and elevated temperatures (30 °C). Mucous swabs were collected throughout the study period to determine dermal glucocorticoid (dGC) concentrations, as a proxy for physiological stress. In addition to this, individual body mass measurements were collected. The results showed that individuals within the experimental group who experienced increased temperatures had significantly elevated dGC levels compared to the control animals. Furthermore, there was a significant difference in the percentage mass change between experimental and control animals. These findings indicate the physiological sensitivity of the edible bullfrog to a thermal stressor in captivity. While this study shows the importance of proper amphibian management within the captive environment, it also highlights the coming danger of global climate change to this and similar amphibian species. Background: Patients with eosinophilic asthma often report poor symptomatic control and quality of life. Anti-IL-5 therapy, including anti-IL-5Rα (benralizumab), rapidly depletes eosinophils in the blood and airways and also reduces asthma exacerbations and improves quality of life scores. In patients with severe asthma, eosinophilic inflammation-driven airway mucus occlusions have been measured using thoracic x-ray CT imaging. Pulmonary 129Xe MRI ventilation defect percentage (VDP) also sensitively measures asthma airway dysfunction caused by airway hyperresponsiveness, remodeling, and luminal mucus occlusions. Using 129Xe MRI and CT imaging together, it is feasible to measure both airway luminal occlusions and airway ventilation in relationship to anti-IL-5 therapy to ascertain the direct impact of therapy-induced eosinophil depletion on airway function.Research Question: Does 129Xe MRI detect airway functional responses to eosinophil depletion after a single benralizumab dose and do airway mucus occlusions mediate this response?Study Design and Methods: MRI, eosinophil count, spirometry, oscillometry, Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ), Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ), and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire were completed on day 0 and 28 days after a single 30-mg subcutaneous benralizumab dose. CT scan mucus plugs were scored on day 0, and MRI VDP was quantified on days 0 and 28.Results: Twenty-nine participants (27 with baseline CT imaging) completed day 0 and day 28 visits. On day 28 after a single benralizumab dose, significantly improved blood eosinophil counts, VDP, ACQ 6 scores, AQLQ scores (all P < .001), and peripheral airway resistance (P = .04) were found in all participants. On day 28, significantly improved VDP and ACQ 6 scores also were found in the subgroup of nine participants with five or more mucus plugs, but not in the subgroup (n = 18) with fewer than five mucus plugs. Based on univariate relationships for change in ACQ 6 score, multivariate models were generated and showed that day 0 VDP (P < .001) and day 0 CT scan mucus score (P < .001) were significant variables for change in ACQ 6 score on day 28 after benralizumab injection.Interpretation: 129Xe ventilation significantly improved in participants with uncontrolled asthma and in those with significant mucus plugging after a single dose of benralizumab.Trial Registry: ClinicalTrials.gov; No.: NCT03733535; URL: www.Clinicaltrials: gov. The innate immune system provides an adequate response to stress factors and pathogens through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), located on the surface of cell membranes and in the cytoplasm. Generally, the structures of PRRs are formed by several domains that are evolutionarily conserved, with a fairly high degree of homology in representatives of different species. The orthologs of TLRs, NLRs, RLRs and CLRs are widely represented, not only in marine chordates, but also in invertebrates. Study of the interactions of the most ancient marine multicellular organisms with microorganisms gives us an idea of the evolution of molecular mechanisms of protection against pathogens and reveals new functions of already known proteins in ensuring the body's homeostasis. The review discusses innate immunity mechanisms of protection of marine invertebrate organisms against infections, using the examples of ancient multicellular hydroids, tunicates, echinoderms, and marine worms in the context of searching for analogies with vertebrate innate immunity. Due to the fact that mucous membranes first arose in marine invertebrates that have existed for several hundred million years, study of their innate immune system is both of fundamental importance in terms of understanding molecular mechanisms of host defense, and of practical application, including the search of new antimicrobial agents for subsequent use in medicine, veterinary and biotechnology. Abstract Background Fish skin represents an ancient vertebrate mucosal surface, sharing characteristics with other mucosal surfaces including those of the intestine. The skin mucosa is continuously exposed to microbes in the surrounding water and is therefore important in the first line defense against environmental pathogens by preventing bacteria from accessing the underlying surfaces. Understanding the microbe-host interactions at the fish skin mucosa is highly relevant in order to understand and control infection, commensalism, colonization, persistence, infection, and disease. Here we investigate the interactions between the pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas salmonicida (A. salmonicida) and Yersinia ruckeri (Y. ruckeri), respectively, and the skin mucosal surface of Atlantic salmon fry using AFM force spectroscopy. Results The results obtained revealed that when retracting probes functionalized with bacteria from surfaces coated with immobilized mucins, isolated from salmon mucosal surfaces, rupture events reflecting the disruption of adhesive interactions were observed, with rupture strengths centered around 200 pN. However, when retracting probes functionalized with bacteria from the intact mucosal surface of salmon fish fry no adhesive interactions could be detected. Furthermore, rheological measurements revealed a near fluid-like behavior for the fish fry skin mucus. Taken together, the experimental data indicate that the adhesion between the mucin molecules within the mucous layer may be significantly weaker than the interaction between the bacteria and the mucin molecules. The bacteria, immobilized on the AFM probe, do bind to individual mucins in the mucosal layer, but are released from the near fluid mucus with little resistance upon retraction of the AFM probe, to which they are immobilized. Conclusion The data provided in the current paper reveal that A. salmonicida and Y. ruckeri do bind to the immobilized mucins. However, when retracting the bacteria from intact mucosal surfaces, no adhesive interactions are detected. These observations suggest a mechanism underlying the protective function of the mucosal surface based on the clearing of potential threats by adhering them to loosely attached mucus that is subsequently released from the fish skin.

Aim: This paper reports a case of mucocele in the left side of the lower lip treated by conventional surgical excision of the lesion.Background: Mucoceles are most frequently occurring benign salivary gland lesion. The most common site of occurrence of mucocelein the oral cavity is the lower lip. Extravasation type is most frequently occurring lesion because of the extravasation of mucus secretion into the fibrous connective tissue that result from an alterationof minor salivary glands and ducts. The main etiological factors are trauma or lip biting habit. Because of its pathognomonic presentation, the diagnosis is mainly clinical. Histopathogical investigation is also necessary to rule out other salivary lesions or tumours.Case Report: In this report, a mucocele developed in the fourteen old year female patient is described. Surgical excision of the lesion was planned followed by the gentle dissection of the lesion. Histopathological examinationrevealed the presence of cystic cavity surrounded by the underlining connective tissue stroma, which consist of numerous salivary gland tissues lined by inflammatory cell infiltration suggestive of mucous extravasation cyst.Conclusion:Out of various treatment modalities, Simple surgical excision is the treatment of choice, alleviating patient’s distress and discomfort.Clinical significance: Oral mucocele is the most common benign lesionoccuring in the oral cavity in children. Mucocele is a salivary gland disorder that can appear in the oral cavity, Lacrimal sac, Paranasal sinuses, Appendix, or gall bladder but lower lip is the most common site. These lesions occur due to mucous retention resulting from the alteration of minor salivary glands. Most common cause to develop mucocele is trauma or habit of lip biting. Diagnosis is mainly clinical due to its characteristic pathognomonic presentation. Treatment encompasses complete surgical excision with intact lining. Proper diagnosis and application of surgical skill leaves almost nil chances to reoccur. We report a case of mucocele lower lip in adult treated by conventional surgical excision of the lesion. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the utility of fluorescence-guided biopsy in suspected lung cancer patients with bronchial mucosal lesions. We conducted a retrospective study in a single screening center to assess the sensitivity and specificity of fluorescence-guided biopsy compared with white light bronchoscopy (WLB) in patients with bronchial mucosal lesions. A total of 301 patients with bronchial mucosal lesions were enrolled in this study. The sensitivity for patients with fluorescence-guided biopsy was 60.3 % (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 53.1 %–67.1 %), which was higher than that of patients with WLB alone (45.2 %, 95 % CI: 38.2–52.4 %) (P = 0.0026). Additionally, compared with the WLB group, the fluorescence -guided biopsy group was found to have a significantly higher specificity (100 %, 95 % CI: 95.5–100 % versus 69.6 %, 95 % CI: 59.6–78.1 %), positive predictive value (100 %, 95 % CI: 96.1–100 % versus 74.3 %, 95 % CI: 65.5–81.7 %) and negative predictive value (56.3 %, 95 % CI: 48.8–63.6 % versus 39.4 %, 95 % CI: 32.3–47.0 %). Abstract Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a systemic cicatrizing autoimmune disease that primarily affects orificial mucous membranes, such as the conjunctiva, the nasal cavity, the oropharynx, and the genitalia. Ocular involvement occurs in about 70% of all MMP cases. Ocular MMP (OcMMP) also encompasses the conditions linear immunoglobulin A disease, mucosal dominated epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, and anti-laminin 332/anti-epiligrin/anti-laminin 5 pemphigoid. It is a complex clinical entity that may lead to ocular surface failure and result in inflammatory and infectious complications, as well as potentially devastating visual loss. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are of paramount importance and require a high level of expertise as this condition can be extremely challenging to diagnose and treat even for experienced clinicians. In this review we provide an up-to-date insight on the pathophysiology of OcMMP, with an emphasis on the current state of its diagnostics and therapeutics. Our the aim is to increase our understanding of OcMMP and highlight modern diagnostic and therapeutic options.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common type of autoimmune bullous disease and is characterized by the presence of circulating anti-BP180 and/or anti-BP230 autoantibodies. Patients with BP often present with tense blisters and erythema, mainly on the trunk and limbs, but a few patients also have mucosal involvement. In this article, we discuss the fact that BP patients with mucosal involvement tend to have more serious conditions and their disease is more difficult to control. Potential risk factors for mucous involvement include earlier age at onset, drugs such as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, cancer, and blood/serum biomarkers, including lower eosinophil count, higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate, IgG autoantibodies against both the NH2- and COOH-termini of BP180, and the absence of anti-BP230 antibodies. IgA and C3 deposition at the dermo-epidermal junction may also be present. Understanding these risk factors may benefit earlier diagnosis of these patients and promote the development of novel treatments. What's more, it's helpful in deeper understanding of BP development and the relationship between BP and mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP).

The bivalve Corbicula japonica is a popular food in Japan. The abundance of the clam in a lake changes over time. Clam transport is assumed to be passive even after the clam's settlement. But it is not clear whether clams can be considered like sand particles, or whether biological features of the clams affect their movement. Features of clams that differ from sediment particles and may affect movement include secretion of mucous threads, use of the foot byssus, burrowing, as well as the clam's shape. The aim of the work was to determine whether these biological features modified the interaction with the hydrodynamics which would affect the transport of juvenile and adult clams within a lake. We performed a series of laboratory experiments to measure the critical shear stresses of clams for transport. The mucous threads substantially decreased critical shear stress and in contrast, the byssus significantly increased critical shear stress. We then performed field measurements in Lake Shinji and evaluated the possibilities of clam transport depending on these biological behaviors. Thus, the evaluated shear stresses for clams will be applied into a clam dispersal and transport simulation model, which can be useful to understand the strategy of clams' survivals. Background Ephippidae fish are characterized by a discoid shape with a very small visceral cavity. Among them Platax orbicularis has a high economic potential due to its flesh quality and flesh to carcass ratio. Nonetheless, the development of its aquaculture is limited by high mortality rates, especially due to Tenacibaculum maritimum infection, occurring one to three weeks after the transfer of fishes from bio-secure land-based aquaculture system to the lagoon cages for growth. Among the lines of defense against this microbial infection, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is less studied. The knowledge about the morphofunctional anatomy of this organ in P. orbicularis is still scarce. Therefore, the aims of this study are to characterize the GIT in non-infected P. orbicularis juveniles to then investigate the impact of T. maritimum on this multifunctional organ. Methods In the first place, the morpho-anatomy of the GIT in non-infected individuals was characterized using various histological techniques. Then, infected individuals, experimentally challenged by T. maritimum were analysed and compared to the previously established GIT reference. Results The overlapped shape of the GIT of P. orbicularis is probably due to its constrained compaction in a narrow visceral cavity. Firstly, the GIT was divided into 10 sections, from the esophagus to the rectum. For each section, the structure of the walls was characterized, with a focus on mucus secretions and the presence of the Na+/K+ ATPase pump. An identification key allowing the characterization of the GIT sections using in toto histology is given. Secondly, individuals challenged with T. maritimum exhibited differences in mucus type and proportion and, modifications in the mucosal and muscle layers. These changes could induce an imbalance in the trade-off between the GIT functions which may be in favour of protection and immunity to the disadvantage of nutrition capacities.

Mangroves are critical marine habitats. High hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a feature of these important ecosystems and its toxicity creates a challenge for mangrove inhabitants. The mangrove rivulus (Kryptolebias marmoratus) is a selfing, hermaphroditic, amphibious fish that can survive exposure to 1116 μM H2S in the wild. These fish rely on cutaneous respiration for gas and ion exchange when emerged. We hypothesized that the skin surface is fundamentally important in H2S tolerance in these mangrove fish by limiting H2S permeability. To test our hypothesis, we first disrupted the skin surface in one isogenic lineage and measured H2S tolerance and sensitivity. We increased water H2S concentration until emersion as a measure of the ability to sense and react to H2S, which we refer to as sensitivity. We then determined H2S tolerance by preventing emersion and increasing H2S until loss of equilibrium (LOE). The H2S concentration at emersion and LOE were significantly affected by disrupting the skin surface, providing support that the skin is involved in limiting H2S permeability. Capitalizing on their unique reproductive strategy, we used three distinct isogenic lineages to test the hypothesis that there would be genetic differences in H2S sensitivity and tolerance. We found significant differences in emersion concentration only among lineages, suggesting a genetic component to H2S sensitivity but not tolerance. Our study also demonstrated that external skin modifications and avoidance behaviours are two distinct strategies used to tolerate ecologically relevant H2S concentrations and likely facilitate survival in challenging mangrove habitats. Introduction: Histoplasmosis is the main opportunistic infection and cause of death in HIV-infected persons living with HIV in French Guiana and probably in most of Latin America. The objective of the present study was to compare cutaneomucous histoplasmosis to non-cutaneomucous histoplasmosis in French Guiana. Methods: Between 1981 and 2014 AIDS-related disseminated histoplasmosis patients followed in the three hospitals of French Guiana were retrospectively studied. Only proven incident cases of histoplasmosis, either by pathology and/or mycological analysis, were considered. Mucocutaneous histoplasmosis was ascertained by a positive mucosal or cutaneous biopsy. Results: Thirty-one patients had mucocutaneous lesions, and 318 had no mucocutaneous lesions. Patients with cutaneomucous lesions were more likely to have had prior opportunistic infections (35.5%) than those who did not have cutaneomucous lesions (19.5%). They were more likely to be very severely immunocompromised (CD4 count < 50) (90.3% versus 62.8%) and less likely to have digestive signs (32.3% versus 74.1%) and superficial adenopathies (29% versus 50.2%) than those without cutaneomucous lesions. In terms of simple biological examinations, patients with cutaneomucous lesions had fewer signs of cholestasis. The diagnosis was significantly more likely to be performed by direct examination and pathology in those with cutaneomucous lesions than in those without such lesions. On the contrary, patients with cutaneomucous lesions were less likely to be diagnosed by fungal culture than those without cutaneomucous lesions. There was a greater but non-significant risk of early death in those with cutaneomucous lesions relative to those without (OR = 2.28 (95%CI = 0.83–5.7), p = 0.056. Background. Ephippidae fish are characterized by a discoid shape with a very small visceral cavity. Among them Platax orbicularis has a high economic potential due to its flesh quality and flesh to carcass ratio. Nonetheless, the development of its aquaculture is limited by high mortality rates, especially due to Tenacibaculum maritimum infection, occurring one to three weeks after the transfer of fishes from bio-secure land-based aquaculture system to the lagoon cages for growth. Among the lines of defense against this microbial infection, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is less studied. The knowledge about the morphofunctional anatomy of this organ in P. orbicularis is still scarce. Therefore, the aims of this study are to characterize the GIT in noninfected P. orbicularis juveniles to then investigate the impact of T. maritimum on this multifunctional organ. Methods. In the first place, the morpho-anatomy of the GIT in non-infected individuals was characterized using various histological techniques. Then, infected individuals, experimentally challenged by T. maritimum were analysed and compared to the previously established GIT reference. Results. The overlapped shape of the GIT of P. orbicularis is probably due to its constrained compaction in a narrow visceral cavity. Firstly, the GIT was divided into 10 sections, from the esophagus to the rectum. For each section, the structure of the walls was characterized, with a focus on mucus secretions and the presence of the NaC/KC ATPase pump. An identification key allowing the characterization of the GIT sections using in toto histology is given. Secondly, individuals challenged with T. maritimum exhibited differences in mucus type and proportion and, modifications in the mucosal and muscle layers. These changes could induce an imbalance in the tradeoff between the GIT functions which may be in favour of protection and immunity to the disadvantage of nutrition capacities. The Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri (Krefft 1870), is the sole extant member of the Ceratodontidae within the Dipnoi, a small order of sarcopterygian (lobe-finned) fishes, that is thought to be the earliest branching species of extant lungfishes, having changed little over the last 100 million years. To extend studies on anatomical adaptations associated with the fish-tetrapod transition, the ultrastructure of the cornea and iris is investigated using light and electron (transmission and scanning) microscopy to investigate structure-function relationships and compare these to other vertebrate corneas (other fishes and tetrapods). In contrast to previous studies, the cornea is found to have only three main components, comprising an epithelium with its basement membrane, a stroma with a Bowman's layer and an endothelium, and is not split into a dermal (secondary) spectacle and a scleral cornea. The epithelial cells are large, relatively low in density and similar to many species of non-aquatic tetrapods and uniquely possess numerous surface canals that contain and release mucous granules onto the corneal surface to avoid desiccation. A Bowman's layer is present and, in association with extensive branching and anastomosing of the collagen fibrils, may be an adaptation for the inhibition of swelling and/or splitting of the stroma during its amphibious lifestyle. The dorsal region of the stroma possesses aggregations of pigment granules that act as a yellow, short wavelength-absorbing filter during bright light conditions. Desçemet's membrane is absent and replaced by an incomplete basement membrane overlying a monocellular endothelium. The iris is pigmented, well-developed, vascularised and contractile containing reflective crystals anteriorly. Based upon its ultrastructure and functional adaptations, the cornea of N. forsteri is more similar to amphibians than to other bony fishes and is well-adapted for an amphibious lifestyle., (© 2023 The Authors. The microstructure of the oral cavity and alimentary canal of herbivorous fish Siganus rivulatus collected from the Red Sea were investigated by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that S. rivulatus has three types of teeth, tri‐cusped, bi‐cusped, and papilliform. A taste bud (Type I) was recorded in the oropharyngeal cavity. Characteristic styles of microridges on the cell's surface inside the buccal cavity were recorded. Also, the distribution of the mucous cells in the lining of the mouth cavity, alimentary canal was observed. Mucosal folds along the distinct parts of alimentary canal, showed characteristic pattern which was complex in the intestinal mucosa. The results concluded that there are characteristic microstructures according to feeding habitat compared with other bony fishes. The buccal cavity of the Siganus rivulatus was studied.Scanning electron microscope was used to identify the layers differences in the alimentary canal.Intestinal mucosa showed complex patterns of the folds and mucous cells.Gastric pits represented the emergence of the gastric glands were recorded. Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a systemic cicatrizing autoimmune disease that primarily affects orificial mucous membranes, such as the conjunctiva, the nasal cavity, the oropharynx, and the genitalia. Ocular involvement occurs in about 70% of all MMP cases. Ocular MMP (OcMMP) also encompasses the conditions linear immunoglobulin A disease, mucosal dominated epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, and anti-laminin 332/anti-epiligrin/anti-laminin 5 pemphigoid. It is a complex clinical entity that may lead to ocular surface failure and result in inflammatory and infectious complications, as well as potentially devastating visual loss. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are of paramount importance and require a high level of expertise as this condition can be extremely challenging to diagnose and treat even for experienced clinicians. In this review we provide an up-to-date insight on the pathophysiology of OcMMP, with an emphasis on the current state of its diagnostics and therapeutics. Mucocele is a common salivary gland disorder that can appear in the lacrimal sac, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, appendix, or gall bladder. These lesions occur due to mucous accumulation resulting from the alteration of minor salivary glands. Lower lip is the most common site of occurrence of these lesions in the oral cavity and most probable cause is trauma or habit of lip biting. Diagnosis is mainly clinical due to its pathognomonic presentation. We report a case series of mucocele in children treated by conventional surgical excision of the lesion.

Lichen is a common chronic inflammatory dermatitis that can affect the skin, mucous membranes and phaneres. The simultaneous involvement of the three compartments is rare and testifies to the severity and activity of the disease. We present a case of this triple involvement. However, the complete muco-cutaneous and phanerienic forms are rare, testify to the severity of the disease and justify a systemic treatment and a regular and long-term monitoring view the risk of degeneration of the mucous lesions. We report the case of this 60-old-man, followed for papular dermatosis, hyperpigmentary, very itchy, generalized, with involvement of the genital mucosa, in the form of erosive balanitis and nails of the hands and feet. The cutaneous histology was in favor of lichen. The biological examinations did not show any dysthyroidism, liver or autoimmune diseases. The patient was placed on systemic and topical corticosteroids. A pigmentogenic evolution of the cutaneous lesions, a beginning of bleaching of the nail lesions and a resistance of the genital lesions were noted.

Salivary gland (SG) development involves dynamic epithelial-mesenchymal interactions resulting in the formation of highly branched epithelial structures that produce and secrete saliva. The SG epithelium differentiates into saliva-producing terminal buds, i.e., acini, and transporting ducts. Most studies on the salivary gland have focused on branching morphogenesis; however, acinar cell differentiation underlying the determination of serous or mucous salivary glands is unclear. The objective of this study was to identify the mesenchymal signaling molecules involved in the epithelial differentiation of the salivary gland type as serous or mucous. Salivary glands undergoing stage-specific development, including the parotid gland (PG) and the sublingual gland (SLG) at embryonic day 14.5 (E14.5) were dissected. The glands were treated with dispase II to separate the epithelium and the mesenchyme. RNA from mesenchyme was processed for microarray analysis. Thereafter, microarray data were analyzed to identify putative candidate molecules involved in salivary gland differentiation and confirmed via quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The microarray analysis revealed the expression of 31,873 genes in the PG and SLG mesenchyme. Of the expressed genes 21,026 genes were found to be equally expressed (Fold change 1.000) in both PG and SLG mesenchyme. The numbers of genes expressed over onefold in the PG and SLG mesenchyme were found to be 5247 and 5600 respectively. On limiting the fold-change cut off value over 1.5 folds, only 214 and 137 genes were expressed over 1.5 folds in the PG and the SLG mesenchyme respectively. Our findings suggest that differential expression patterns of the mesenchymal signaling molecules are involved in fate determination of the salivary acinar cell types during mouse embryogenesis. Introduction: Nano-scale formulations are being developed to improve the delivery of orally administered medicines, and the interactions between nanoformulations and the gastrointestinal luminal, mucosal and epithelial environment is currently being investigated. The mucosal surface of the gastrointestinal tract is capable of trapping and eliminating large particles and pathogens as part of the natural defences of the body, it is becoming clearer that nanoformulation properties such as particle size, charge, and shape, as well as mucous properties such as viscoelasticity, thickness, density, and turn-over time are all relevant to these interactions. However, progress has been slow to utilise this information to produce effective mucous-penetrating particles. Areas covered: This review focuses on delivery method of nanomedicines both into and across the gastrointestinal mucosal surface, and aims to summarise the biological barriers that exist to successful oral nanomedicine delivery and how these barriers may be investigated and overcome. Expert commentary: Despite successes in the laboratory, no nanotechnology-enabled products are currently in clinical use which either specifically target the intestinal mucous surface or cross the epithelial barrier intact. New nanomedicine-based treatments of local diseases (intestinal cancer, inflammation, infection) and systemic diseases are advancing towards clinical use, and offer genuine opportunities to improve therapy. Embryonic development of the mouse salivary glands begins with epithelial thickening and continues with sequential changes from the pre-bud to terminal bud stages. After birth, morphogenesis proceeds, and the glands develop into a highly branched epithelial structure that terminates with saliva-producing acinar cells at the adult stage. Acinar cells derived from the epithelium are differentiated into serous, mucous, and seromucous types. During differentiation, cytokeratins, intermediate filaments found in most epithelial cells, play vital roles. Although the localization patterns and developmental roles of cytokeratins in different epithelial organs, including the mammary glands, circumvallate papilla, and sweat glands, have been well studied, their stage-specific localization and morphogenetic roles during salivary gland development have yet to be elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the stage and acinar cell type-specific localization pattern of cytokeratins 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 14, 18, and 19 in the major salivary glands (submandibular, sublingual, and parotid glands) of the mouse at the E15.5, PN0, PN10, and adult stages. In addition, cell physiology, including cell proliferation, was examined during development via immunostaining for Ki67 to understand the cellular mechanisms that govern acinar cell differentiation during salivary gland morphogenesis. The distinct localization patterns of cytokeratins in conjunction with cell physiology will reveal the roles of epithelial cells in salivary gland formation during the differentiation of serous, mucous or seromucous salivary glands. The mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, eyes, nose, lungs, cervix and vagina is lined by epithelium interspersed with mucus-secreting goblet cells, all of which contribute to their unique functions. This mucus provides an integral defence to the epithelium against noxious agents and pathogens. However, it can equally act as a barrier to drugs and delivery systems targeting epithelial passive and active transport mechanisms. This review highlights the various mucins expressed at different mucosal surfaces on the human body, and their role in creating a mucoid architecture to protect epithelia with specialized functions. Various factors compromising the barrier properties of mucus have been discussed, with an emphasis on how disease states and microbiota can alter the physical properties of mucus. For instance, Akkermansia muciniphila , a bacterium found in higher levels in the gut of lean individuals induces the production of a thickened gut mucus layer. The aims of this article are to elucidate the different physiological, biochemical and physical properties of bodily mucus, a keen appreciation of which will help circumvent the slippery slope of challenges faced in achieving effective mucosal drug and gene delivery. Purpose To study the time to wound healing and recurrence rate achieved in the treatment of distal interphalangeal joint mucous cysts using the Zitelli modified bilobed flap. Methods We surgically treated 33 patients from January 2006 to June 2015. We assessed demographic data, comorbidities, location and size of the cyst, time to wound healing, and complications. Results The most affected finger was the right middle finger. All flaps survived and wounds healed in 14 days on average. The mucous cyst recurred in 1 of 33 cases. There were no major complications. Conclusions The Zitelli bilobed flap can provide good-quality skin coverage over the distal interphalangeal joint in a short period. Type of study/level of evidence Therapeutic IV. Human ascariasis has been characterized as the most prevalent neglected tropical disease worldwide. There is an urgent need for search to alternative prevention and control methods for ascariasis. Here we aimed to establish a protocol of oral immunization with a previously described chimera protein capable of resist through digestion and induce mucous protection against Ascaris suum infection. Mice were oral immunized with seven doses with one day interval and challenged with A. suum ten days after the last dose. In vitro digestion showed that 64% of chimeric protein was bioaccessible for absorption after digestion. Immunized mice display 66,2% reduction of larval burden in lungs compared to control group. In conclusion we demonstrated that oral immunization with chimera protein protects the host against A. suum larval migration leading to less pronounced histopathological lesions. Surface architecture of the buccal cavity and the surface organization of the luminal mucosa of the oesophagus, stomach, and intestine of the carnivorous fish M. flavolineatus from the Red Sea were studied by using SEM. The results revealed that M. flavolineatus has four kinds of teeth; curved-blunt, wedge-shaped, flattened crowns, molariform and papilliform. Three types of taste buds (type I, II and III) were recorded in the oropharyngeal cavity. It was observed that taste buds and teeth are co-located in the pharyngeal region. Characteristic patterns of microridges of the surface cells in the oral cavity and oesophagus were observed. Mucous cells are distributed in the lining of the mouth cavity, oesophagus, stomach, and intestine. Characteristic patterns of mucosal folds throughout the alimentary canal, concerning oesophagus, stomach, and intestine were revealed. Numerous gastric pits, which represents the emergence of the gastric glands, were recorded in the anterior and middle regions of the stomach. Background Chronic otitis media (COM) is one of the most common childhood diseases. Its pathophysiology is complex and multifactorial. The role of specific mucin glycoprotein subtypes in OM is only recently being elucidated. Objective To determine the relationship between middle ear fluid mucins and clinical variables of patients needing tympanostomy tubes (TT). Methods Middle ear effusions (MEE) from children receiving TT were collected over a 2-year period. Western blot characterization of mucins MUC5B and MUC5AC along with chart review of age, gender, effusion viscosity, hearing loss >30 dB, history of allergies, and/or respiratory disease were performed. Results MEE samples from 58 patients were available for analysis. Overall, MUC5B was significantly more often detected in middle ear fluid relative to MUC5AC (90% vs. 51%, p = 0.005). MUC5B presence was statistically associated with mucoid effusions relative to serous effusions (100% vs. 57%, p = 0.0064), MUC5AC presence was not significantly different in mucoid and serous fluid (55.1% vs. 37.5%, p = 0.447). Patients younger than 48 months were more likely to present with mucoid effusion, compared to those older than 48 months of age (p = 0.038). Finally, patients with effusions positive for MUC5B were younger than those with effusions negative for MUC5B (35.1 vs. 76 months, p = 0.045). No other variables correlated to either effusion viscosity or specific mucin content. Conclusion Patients younger in age needing TT placement are more likely to present with mucoid effusions, predominantly containing MUC5B mucin. Mucoadhesion describes an attractive interaction between dosage form and mucosal membrane. The evaluation of mucoadhesive excipients often requires the use of ex vivo mucosal tissues taken from laboratory animals. These can be difficult to source, highly heterogeneous, and require the use of animal products. Thus, from both a user-convenience and ethical point-of-view, it is desirable to produce a synthetic alternative to these tissues—a mucosa-mimetic material. In this mini-review, the use of alternative materials to test the performance of mucoadhesives is reviewed and discussed.
