Abstract

We demonstrate the simultaneous generation of second, third, and fourth harmonic from a single dielectric Bismuth Ferrite nanoparticle excited by a telecom fiber laser at 1560 nm. We first characterize the signals associated with different nonlinear orders in terms of spectrum, excitation intensity dependence, and relative signal strengths. Successively, on the basis of the polarization-resolved emission curves of the three harmonics, we discuss the interplay of susceptibility tensor components at the different orders and we show how polarization can be used as an optical handle to control the relative frequency conversion properties., Comment: include S.I. section at the end of the main pdf file

Abstract

Bismuth Ferrite (BFO) nanoparticles (BFO-NP) display interesting optical (nonlinear response) and magnetic properties which make them amenable for bio-oriented applications as intra- and extra membrane contrast agents. Due to the relatively recent availability of this material in well dispersed nanometric form, its biocompatibility was not known to date. In this study, we present a thorough assessment of the effects of in vitro exposure of human adenocarcinoma (A549), lung squamous carcinoma (NCI-H520), and acute monocytic leukemia (THP-1) cell lines to uncoated and poly(ethylene glycol)-coated BFO-NP in the form of cytotoxicity, haemolytic response and biocompatibility. Abstract

Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) from BiFeO3 nanocrystals is investigated for the first time to determine their potential as biomarkers for multiphoton imaging. Nanocrystals are produced by an auto-combustion method with TRIS as a fuel. Stable colloidal suspensions with mean particle diameters in the range 100-120 nm are then obtained after wet-milling and sonication steps. SHG properties are determined using two complementary experimental techniques, Hyper Rayleigh Scattering and nonlinear polarization microscopy. BiFeO3 shows a very high second harmonic efficiency with an averaged coefficient of 79+-12 pm/V. From the nonlinear polarization response of individual nanocrystals, relative values of the independent dij coefficients are also determined and compared with recent theoretical and experimental studies. Additionally, the particles show a moderate magnetic response, which is attributed to gamma-Fe2O3 impurities. A combination of high nonlinear optical efficiency and magnetic response within the same particle is of great interest for future bio-imaging and diagnostic applications.

17. Synergetic Peroxidase-Mimic Catalytic Activity of Noble-Metal-Decorated Lithium Niobate Nanozymes for Potential Biological Applications.

Abstract

In this paper, we report a simple, facile, and efficient method to obtain LiNbO3/Au and LiNbO3/Pt nanoparticles composed of LiNbO3 NPs (LN NPs) (30 nm) and ultrasmall nanoparticles (<5 nm, seeds) of Au and Pt, respectively. The synthesis of the nanocomposites followed a simple layer-by-layer method introducing branched poly-(ethyleneimine) (BPEI) as a linker. By varying the volume of metal seeds dispersion added to the LN coated with BPEI, the loading of metal on the surface of the LN is controlled. The morphology of the as-prepared composite is characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Its applicability as peroxidase mimics is investigated and compared to the separated counterparts (LN NPs, LN@BPEI, AuSeeds, PtSeeds, and a simple mixture of LN NPs and metal seeds). The synthesized nanoparticles follow the Michaelis–Menten kinetic model with enhanced catalytic activity compared to the metal seeds alone. This intrinsic peroxidase activity makes them promising candidates for applications in biomedicine. In particular, the low Michaelis constant Km and high maximum velocity Vmax for the H2O2 are of great interest for H2O2 sensing and generation of reactive oxygen species for antimicrobial applications. Abstract

International audience; Advances in nanosciences and nanotechnologies during the past two decades have greatly progressed the therapies and diagnostic tools possible in medicine and biology today. Nanoparticles in particular, can exhibit enhanced optical, magnetic and other physico-chemical properties as a result of their size, shape and composition, and have been the subject of special interest in their application to targeted cancer therapy. This work presents core-shell nanoparticles, the core material being LiNbO3 (LN) and the shell material being gold, designed for cancer theranostics. LN is a non-centrosymmetric metal oxide, capable of the second harmonic generation (SHG) of light. This property allows for SHG imaging, whose wavelength tuneability, photostability and inherent high spatial resolution gives it an advantage over traditional optical microscopy probes that rely on fluorescence/luminescence [1]. Gold nanoshells can convert light to thermal energy when the incident light absorbed is resonant to its plasmon oscillation, inducing a localized temperature elevation of the surrounding media, which in cellular media can cause cell death [2]. In addition, the resonant plasmon band of gold shells can be tuned by varying the ratio of the shell to core particle thickness. This work reports on the synthesis of LN@Au core-shell nanoparticles using a seeded-growth chemistry protocol, the pH and Au salt concentration effect on the gold shell growth onto the core, and the tuning of the plasmon band to the NIR region. The gold shell growth process was characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Abstract

Harmonic nanoparticles (HNPs) have emerged as appealing exogenous probes for optical bioimaging due to their distinctive features such as long-term photostability and spectral flexibility, allowing multiphoton excitation in the classical (NIR-I) and extended near-infrared spectral windows (NIR-II and -III). However, like all other optical labels, HNPs are not suitable for whole-body imaging applications. In this work, we developed a bimodal nonlinear optical/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent through the covalent conjugation of Gd-(III) chelates to coated lithium niobate HNPs. We show that the resulting nanoconjugates exert strong contrast both in T1-weighted MRI of agarose gel-based phantoms and in cancer cells by harmonic generation upon excitation in the NIR region. Their capabilities for dual T1/T2 MRI were also emphasized by the quantitative mapping of the phantom in both modes. The functionalization protocol ensured high stability of the Gd-functionalized HNPs in a physiological environment and provided a high r1 relaxivity value per NP (5.20 × 105 mM–1 s–1) while preserving their efficient nonlinear optical response. Abstract

We developed a wavelength-tunable second harmonic scattering experimental setup to investigate dispersion of the nonlinear optical response of three different nanocrystal suspensions (LiNbO3, ZnO and BiFeO3). Special attention was paid to reproducibility issues with the implementation of a detailed protocol that allows correcting for the setup spectral response. The absolute, orientation-averaged second order susceptibilities of the three nanomaterials were then assessed in the 700-1300 nm spectral range evidencing very specific optical signatures. The well-defined resonances observed for ZnO and BiFeO3 near their electronic transitions were found to be poorly described by the Miller's rule.

International audience; Votre résumé : Les nanoparticules (NPs) biphotoniques (inorganiques telles que BaTiO3 [1], KTiOPO4 [2] ou fluorophores organiques de type CMONS [3]) sont des sondes de choix dans le domaine de la biologie pour la localisation et le ciblage de cellules cancéreuses grâce à une excitation dans le domaine de transparence des tissus (0,7-1,3 μm) et à leur grande sélectivité spatiale. Le but de ce travail est d'étudier les iodates métalliques et plus particulièrement l'iodate de lanthane, α-La(IO3)3, présentant une structure noncentrosymmétrique ainsi que des coefficients de Génération de Seconde Harmonique (SHG), à l'échelle micronique, comparables à l'iodate de lithium (LiIO3) [4], référence dans le milieu des iodates. Un dopage par ions terres rares peut également être effectué, amenant au système une fonctionnalité supplémentaire : la photoluminescence (PL). La synthèse de nanocristaux de α-La(IO3)3 est développée par voie hydrothermale assistée par micro-onde. Grâce à une optimisation des paramètres de synthèse (température, pression, temps, stoechiométrie, concentration en précurseurs, …) il est possible d'obtenir des NPs de taille submicronique actives en SHG. Des études optiques effectuées sur des nanocristaux de α-La(IO3)3 dopés à 15% par des ions Er 3+ en solution ont permis la mise en évidence d'une émission simultanée du signal de SHG et de PL par up-conversion, sous excitation dans le proche infra-rouge (~ 1 µm). De plus, le rapport des intensités de PL de Er 3+ à 525 et 546 nm, correspondant aux transitions électroniques des niveaux 2 H11/2 4 S3/2 à l'état fondamental 4 I15/2 dépend de la température locale des NPs, ce qui permet d'envisager des applications en nanothermométrie.

Abstract

Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) from BiFeO3 nanocrystals is investigated for the first time to determine their potential as biomarkers for multiphoton imaging. Nanocrystals are produced by an auto-combustion method with 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3-diol as a fuel. Stable colloidal suspensions with mean particle diameters in the range 100-120 nm are then obtained after wet-milling and sonication steps. SHG properties are determined using two complementary experimental techniques, Hyper Rayleigh Scattering and nonlinear polarization microscopy. BiFeO3 shows a very high second harmonic efficiency with an averaged hdi coefficient of 79±12 pm/V. From the nonlinear polarization response of individual nanocrystals, relative values of the independent dij coefficients are also determined and compared with recent theoretical and experimental studies. Additionally, the particles show a moderate magnetic response, which is attributed to γ-Fe2O3 impurities. A combination of high nonlinear optical efficiency and magnetic response within the same particle is of great interest for future bio-imaging and diagnostic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
