2. Determinant Factors to E-wallets Adoption among Small-Sized Muslim Merchants: A Preliminary Analysis

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study are to determine factors influencing the small-sized Muslim merchants in Malaysia to adopt e-wallet and to validate their relationship. Design/methodology/approach: A set of questionnaires was distributed to the 380 small-sized Muslim merchants in two traditional market in Kelantan and Terengganu, Malaysia. This study employed a descriptives statistics for preliminary analysis using SPSS. Findings: The results reveal that all independent variables such as perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use trust, technology self-efficacy, government support and structural assurance are significantly positively correlated to e-wallet adoption. Research limitations/implications: This study focused on two states only, therefore the findings from this study limits its generalizability. Future research may empirically test these antecedents to other regions in Malaysia and other Muslim countries. Practical implications: This study provides valuable insight for the e-wallet providers and government as well in leveraging their strategies to increase e-wallet adoptions among small-sizes Muslim merchants and accelerating the national aspiration towards a cashless society. Originality/value: The study is the first study that comprehensively identified determinant for e-wallet adoption from merchant context that integrating both technological and religious contexts. The study confirms that the variables identified from previous researchers on customer's perspective of e-wallet adoption also applicable for merchant's context. Notably, structural assurance emerges as a new variable influencing e-wallet adoption among Muslim merchants. 16. New enhancement of Shariahgovernance in Islamic finance and Halalsectors in Malaysia: bridging a gap towards integration

Abstract

This study examines the similarities and differences between the Shariah Governance Policy Document(SGPD 2019) and Malaysia Halal Management System(MHMS 2020) on Shariah governance structure and functions and requirements for Shariah/Halalcommittee. This study finds that SGPD 2019 is more comprehensive compared to MHMS 2020. Although both SGPD 2019 and MHMS 2020 emphasise Shariahgovernance in their policy documents and guidelines, however SGPD 2019 has specific indication Shariahgovernance compared to MHMS 2020. In addition, SGPD 2019 also has an extensive requirement for the Shariahcommittee as compared to the internal Halalcommittee by MHMS 2020. This study provides a comparison of Shariahgovernance that would be beneficial to authorities in the Islamic finance and Halalsectors to strengthen the industry. This study is exclusively calibrating the integration of Shariahgovernance guidelines from different authorities to be benefited in both Islamic finance and Halalsectors practices.

Abstract

E-Wallet has been applied in Muslim and non-Muslim jurisdictions in many parts of the world including Malaysia, China, India, and Korea. The application is widely used and has raised questions with regard to legal and shariah issues. This paper aims to analyse specifically, legal issues affecting e-wallet practices. This paper adopted a qualitative research approach. The data collected include document reviews, ethnographical interviews and observations. This study found several legal issues related to e-wallet inter alia, an unclear position on the liability of board directors of e-wallet operators, breach of mandate and exclusion of liability of e-wallet operators. As e-wallet is important as an enabler to increase financial inclusion, it is important to address the legal issues on e-wallet to enhance good governance and best practices of e-wallet in Malaysia. The findings from this paper can be used as a basis for policymakers including scholars in the formulation of guidelines on legal and shariah compliance of e-wallets.

Abstract

Introduction: Insurtech refers to the use of technology innovations designed to squeeze cost and maximize efficiency from the current insurance industry model. Insurtech is a combination of the word's "insurance" and "technology," inspired by the term fintech i.e. financial technology. Whilst insurance company already move forward, Islamic Insurtech seems not a popular terminology. It may not have unique characteristic from stakeholder's perspective and therefore it may only be embedded in insurtech definition. Purpose: This paper aims to explore the potential of having Islamic insurtech in the global market and analyze the opportunity to establish a conceptual framework for Islamic Insurtech. Methodology: This study uses qualitative approach based on analyzing content analysis. A report from government agencies and corporate include website propose subject of the study were review to developing insurtech framework for takaful. Abstract

Payment is the heart of businesses. For an online business, electronic-payment (e-payment) plays a significant role to expedite the transaction. Online or e-payment system is not crafted for business as merely profit-oriented but it is offered to all, including government and other non-profit organisation institutions. Nowadays, it can be witnessed that there are various types of e-payment systems available to facilitate online selling and buying transactions. However, e-payment system at philanthropy institutions has received fairly little attention from the public. This is happening even though these institutions have invested a lot of money on e-payment systems. Thus, this study attempts to identify types of e-payment systems at one of the Islamic philanthropic institutions in Malaysia and analyse the performance of e-payment in that institution. The result of this study is hoped to contribute to the body of knowledge particularly in terms of information technology and performance measurement in Islamic philanthropy institutions.

Abstract

This research intends to analyze the association of health status perception, disease duration and complications towards diabetes control of Malaysian elderly living with diabetes mellitus (DM). A survey among 210 elderly patients with DM was conducted. Although they consider themselves as 'healthy', such perception is not significantly related to their levels of HbA1c, which is also independent of disease duration. Additionally, certain complications such as retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy and limb amputation are considered significant predictors of HbA1c levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the nature and structure of Islamic investment funds and evaluate their governance and operation from a shari’a perspective. From beginnings in the 1990s, the funds have grown to a global industry with investors and assets drawn from many different countries. However, the industry has developed in a particular way, by taking the easy route and focusing on negative screens, and removing from investments those activities deemed to be unacceptable to Islamic precepts. It is argued here that Islamic finance and investment should be defined by what they stand for, not only what they are against. As well as complying with the ‘negatives’, Islamic investment funds need to pursue and implement the ‘positives’ in the Islamic ethos, by engaging in active monitoring of investments, participating in decision making and promoting justice, honesty and trust in economic affairs, while seeking out investments that have a positive impact on society and the environment and promote the welfare of the community. Although these issues have been largely unexplored by the industry, Western systems of socially responsible investment provide one model for how Islamic investment funds may develop in the future in terms of moving from a negative to a more positive agenda.
