Nanotechnology advances wastewater treatment through the application of Nano entities that optimize contaminant removal and enhance water purification efficacy. In this study, ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were synthesized using Klebsiella pneumoniae, subsequently, a chitosan/ZnO nanocomposite (CS/ZnO NC) was prepared for removing reactive black 5 (RB-5) dye from synthetic wastewater. The biosynthesized nanomaterials were characterized using UV–VIS, FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. The UV–Vis absorbance peaks at 370 nm and 350 nm corresponded to the characteristic surface plasmon resonance of ZnO NPs and the CS/ZnO NC, respectively. Additionally, FTIR analysis identified the various functional groups associated with ZnO NPs and the CS/ZnO NC. XRD analysis revealed their crystallinity to be approximately 22.44 and 25.76, respectively. The SEM images of ZnO NPs and the CS/ZnO NC show hexagonal plate-like particles with sizes of 33.66 nm and 38.64 nm, respectively. Four concentrations of ZnO NPs and CS/ZnO NC (0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/mL) were evaluated for RB-5 degradation at three different levels (25, 50, and 100 mg/L). Statistical analysis showed that chitosan/ZnO NC achieved 95 % dye degradation, compared to 81 % degradation with the same amount of ZnO nanoparticles. Furthermore, a pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the phytotoxicity effects of treated wastewater on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Both ZnO NPs and CS/ZnO NC did not significantly affect the viability of epithelial retinal cell lines at concentrations up to 100 µg/mL, suggesting a safe cytotoxic profile within this dosage range. Overall, CS/ZnO NC proved effective for treating industrial wastewater, making it suitable for recycling in agricultural applications

Trillions of micro- and nanoplastics are ubiquitously dispersed in the environment owing to relentless human reliance on plastics implying constant human exposure to these tiny synthetic particles. Unlike terrestrial and aquatic microplastics, research on airborne microplastics (MPs) is very limited and needs to be expanded to explore their prevalence, fate, and health risks fully. This study effectively assesses available studies conducted on microplastics’ presence in atmospheric deposition, and indoor and outdoor air samples, and highlights disparities in employed methodological approaches. Six different databases have been consulted to procure data (2015–24) for this review study. The number of studies directly investigating MPs in the air is very low which limits knowledge concerning the sources, fate, and attributable human health risks. MPs abundance indoors ranges from 0.13 to 14088.05 items/m ^3 , while in outdoors it ranges from none to 393 items/m ^3 . Indoors are significantly more contaminated than outdoors, raising considerable health concerns given that people spend most of their time indoors. Airborne microplastics are predominately fibrous (88%) indicating textiles as a major source. Nitrogen (N) losses from conventional fertilizers in agricultural systems are very high, which can lead to serious environmental pollution with economic loss. In this study, innovative slow-release fertilizers were prepared using zinc (Zn) [nanoparticles (NPs) or in bulk], using molasses as an environmentally friendly coating. Several treatments were prepared using Zn in different concentrations (i.e., 0.25%, 0.5%, and 4% elemental Zn). The zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were prepared from zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4·7H2O), and were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, the Zn-loaded urea samples were tested for urea N release rate, leaching of water from soil, and crushing strength to assess the impact of coating on the final finished product. Pot experiments were conducted simultaneously to check the agronomic effects of Zn-coated slow-release urea on the growth and development of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The laboratory and pot results confirmed that the ZnO-NP treatments boost wheat growth and yield as a result of reduced N and Zn release. UZnNPs2 (urea coated with 0.5% ZnO-NPs and 5% molasses) demonstrated the best results among all the treatments in terms of slow nutrient release, N and Zn uptake, and grain yield. The UZnNPs2 treatment increased plant yield by 34% (i.e., 4,515 vs. 3,345 kg ha–1) relative to the uncoated prill-treated crop because of the slower release of Zn and N.

Only 47% nitrogen of fertilizer is taken up by a plant whereas more than 40% nitrogen of total applied fertilizer is lost to environment that causes several environmental as well as economic consequences. Slow-release fertilizers are considered as a possible large-scale solution for nitrogen loss. The present study aims to stabilize urea by coating with four different materials including calcium phosphate (CP), gypsum powder (GP), calcium nitrate (CN), and gelatin (G) individually and in combination for slow release of nitrogen to sorghum crop. The physical and chemical characteristics of coated urea were examined by FT-IR, powder XRD, SEM, and rushing strength. Results showed that coating of CP, GP, and CN over urea was uneven and rough while G coating was smooth and admirable, and no pore was observed on the surface and indicated a weak water-urea interaction. Similarly, CPG coating over urea showed a maximum crushing strength of 2.38 N/m2. Slow-release and soil leaching analysis revealed that G coated urea showed the maximum 39.12 and 779.36 ppm nutrient loss after 15- and 480-min treatment, respectively which is much better than uncoated urea (99.81 and 993.65 ppm). Results reported that the maximum plant height, diameter, and chlorophyll were observed as 132.91 ± 1.52 cm, 24.56 ± 1.00 mm, and 56.30 ± 1.03 mg/m2 with CNG coated urea. Similarly, CNG also revealed the maximum dry matter yield (DMY) of 25226.15 kg/ha in shoots and 2633.50 kg/ha in roots, nitrogen uptake (NU) of 18153.75 kg/ha in shoots and 233.99 kg/ha in roots, and apparent nitrogen recovery (ANR) of 71.14% in shoots and 4.55% in roots. It is concluded that CNG coated urea showed better DMY, NU, ANR, and pot analysis, and it is recommended as a slow-release fertilizer for large scale application to minimize nutrient loss and maximize crop production.

The rise in global population, urbanization, and desertification pushes the farming community toward intensive cropping to meet the augmented food demands with consequent exhaustion of soil’s nutritional status and fertility. In recent times, environmental pollution and cost of crop production have been enhanced due to excessive and inefficient use of nitrogenous fertilizers. As an abatement strategy, seven different coated urea fertilizers, namely, gelatin-coated (G), zinc oxide with gelatin-coated (ZnOG), zinc oxide-coated (ZnO), sonicated zinc oxide-coated (ZnO-Son), zinc oxide with molasses-coated (ZnOM), zinc sulfate with molasses-coated (ZnSM), and zinc sulfate-coated (ZnS) were prepared in a fluidized bed coater. The coated samples were characterized through XRD, SEM, and FTIR techniques, while a crushing strength test was carried out to assess the impact of inventory operations on physical integrity of coated prills. Pot tests with ryegrass (Lolium perenne) as a test crop were carried out to evaluate the effect of coated urea fertilizers on yield and nitrogen (N) and zinc uptake in order to enhance nitrogen use efficiency and reduce pollution. Our results suggest that the affinity between urea surface and coating materials was of physical nature. All zinc oxide- or gelatin-coated treatments significantly increased the dry matter yield, nitrogen uptake, apparent nitrogen recovery (ANR), zinc uptake, and apparent zinc recovery (AZnR). ZnOG was proved to be the best sample in terms of balancing soil chemical properties with improved soil nutrition and producing best with plant yield (94% higher than UC), N uptake (75% higher than UC), Zn uptake (450% higher than UC), and nitrogen use efficiency (48 vs. 23% for UC). Our results suggest that the use of such coated fertilizers can lead to improve yields, nutritional values of crops, and overall agro-ecological scenario.

The CO2 capturing is much more important not only in fuel upgrading but also for controlling global warming issues. Although much Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) exhibited great potential, the interfacial fine-tuning of inorganic MOF and organic membrane matrix was still a big obstacle. Herein, a novel bimetallic Pyrazine-functionalized MOF based polysulfone (PSf) mixed matrix membrane was prepared with adaptive interfaces via the interfacial plasticizer polyethylene glycol (PEG). The filler MOF greatly enhanced the CO2 capturing ability of pure PSf and PSf/PEG blend membranes. Structural characterizations revealed defect-free membranes. The mechanical test implied that by adding MOF in PSf, brittleness appeared and strength decreased from 2.84 to 2.26 MPa, but this strength increased up to 4.11 MPa by adding PEG. The interfacial-controlled PSf/PEG/Pyrazine-MOF membranes showed the highest CO2 permeability and solubility without loss of selectivity compared to regular MOF blended MMMs or PSf/PEG blend membranes. The permeability of CO2 significantly increased from 6.82 Barrer (for pure PSf membrane) to 17.13 Barrer (for PSf/PEG/Pyrazine-MOF membrane only adding 0.2% ultra-low-dose Pyrazine-MOF with 2% PEG). The study revealed a robust and efficient strategy to elevate gas separation performances of MMMs via the interfacial engineering.

Green nanomaterials have gained much attention due to their potential use as therapeutic agents. The present study investigated the production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from a silver-resistant Bacillus safensis TEN12 strain, which was isolated from metal contaminated soil and taxonomically identified through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The formation of AgNPs in bacterial culture was confirmed by using UV–vis spectroscopy with an absorption peak at 426.18 nm. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the involvement of capping proteins and alcohols for stabilization of AgNPs. Moreover, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) confirmed the crystalline nature and spherical shape of AgNPs with particle size ranging from 22.77 to 45.98 nm. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) revealed that 93.54% silver content is present in the nano-powder. AgNPs showed maximum antibacterial activity (20.35 mm and 19.69 mm inhibition zones) at 20 µg mL−1 concentration against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively and significantly reduced the pathogen density in broth culture. Furthermore, AgNPs demonstrated significant anticancer effects in the human liver cancer cell line (HepG2) in MTT assay, whereas, no cytotoxic effects were demonstrated by AgNPs on normal cell line (HEK293). The present study suggests that the biogenic AgNPs may substitute chemically synthesized drugs with wider applications as antibacterial and anticancer agents.

Low nitrogen (N) use efficiency from urea fertilizers due to environmental losses results in high cost of fertilizers for agricultural productions. Coating of urea with biodegradable polymers makes them effective for control and efficient N release. In this study, starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used in combination with acrylic acid (AA), citric acid (CA) and maleic acid (MA) for the coating of urea prills. Different formulations of the coating were prepared and applied on urea prills such as urea coated with starch (10%) and PVA (5%) with acrylic acid: 2, 4 and 6% (USP-A2, USP-A4, USP-A6), with citric acid: 2, 4 and 6% (USP-C2, USP-C4, USP-C6), and with maleic acid: 2, 4 and 6% (USP-M2, USP-M4, USP-M6). After urea coating in fluidized bed coater, all uncoated and coated urea samples were characterized by scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), crushing strength and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The morphological and XRD analysis indicated that a new uniform coating with no new phase transformation occurred. Among all urea coated samples, USP-A2 and USP-C2 showed the highest crushing strengths: 12.08 and 13.67 N with nitrogen release efficiency of 70.10 and 50.74% respectively. All coated urea samples improved the spinach plants’ foliage yield, chlorophyll content, N-uptake and apparent nitrogen recovery (ANR) than uncoated urea and control plants. However, USP-A2 and USP-C2 provided promising results among all coated samples with dry foliage yield (2208 ± 92 and 2428 ± 83 kg/ha), chlorophyll (34 ± 0.6 and 34 ± 0.4 mg/g), N-uptake (88 ± 4 and 95 ± 6 kg/ha) and ANR (59 ± 4 and 67 ± 6%). Therefore, urea prills coated with a combination of biodegradable polymers can be a better choice for the farmers to enhance agronomical productions by controlling the fertilizer nutrient release rate.

The negative effects of salinity on plant growth and physiology are well-established, which is one of the major threats to food security in semi-arid and arid regions of the world. The current research focuses on biosynthesis of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) from a bacterial strain NST2, which was genetically identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae based on taxonomic identity of 16S rRNA gene. The strain was selected for bioprospecting of CuNPs owing to its Cu tolerance potential. The biologically-synthesized CuNPs were confirmed in culture by using ultraviolet visible spectroscopy. The material characteristics of green CuNPs were further investigated by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, where crystallite size was ranged from 22.44 nm to 44.26 nm and particles were stabilized by various functional groups, such as carbonyl and amine groups. When 100 mg kg−1 of green CuNPs were mixed in saline soil in a pot experiment, the maize plants showed increased root and shoot length (43.52% and 44.06%, respectively), fresh weight (46.05% and 51.82%, respectively) and dry weight (47.69% and 30.63%, respectively) in comparison to control maize plants without CuNPs application. Moreover, green CuNPs at their highest treatment level (100 mg kg−1 of soil) counteracted the lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage in maize plants by promoting the activities of antioxidants and demoting the cellular levels of reactive oxygen species and ionic contents of Na+ and Cl-. Conclusively, biogenic CuNPs is an emerging and promising technique, which could replace traditional methods of salinity management in agricultural soils.

Background: Multidrug resistant MDR bacterial strains are causing fatal infections, such as mastitis. Thus, there is a need for the development of new target-oriented antimicrobials. Nanomaterials have many advantages over traditional antibiotics, including improved stability, controlled antibiotic release, targeted administration, enhanced bioavailability, and the use of antibiotic-loaded nanomaterials, such as the one herein reported for the first time, appear to be a promising strategy to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The use of rationally designed metallic nanocomposites, rather than the use of single metallic nanoparticles (NPs), should further minimize the bacterial resistance. Aim: Green synthesis of a multimetallic/ternary nanocomposite formed of silver (Ag), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3), conjugated to chitosan (CS), in which the large spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) has been encapsulated. Methods: The metallic nanoparticles (NPs) Ag NPs, TiO2 NPs, and Fe2O3 NPs were synthesized by reduction of Moringa concanensis leaf aqueous extract. The ternary junction was obtained by wet chemical impregnation technique. CIP was encapsulated into the ternary nanocomposite Ag/TiO2/Fe2O3, followed by chitosan (CS) conjugation using the ionic gelation method. The resulting CS-based nanoparticulate drug delivery system (NDDS), i.e., CIP-Ag/TiO2/Fe2O3/CS, was characterized in vitro by gold standard physical techniques such as X-ray diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Pharmacological analyses (i.e., LC, EE, ex-vivo drug release behavior) were also assessed. Further, biological studies were carried out both ex vivo (i.e., by disk diffusion method (DDM), fluorescence-activated single cell sorting (FACS), MTT assay) and in vivo (i.e., antibacterial activity in a rabbit model, colony-forming unit (CFU) on blood agar, histopathological analysis using H&E staining). Results: The encapsulation efficiency (EE) and the loading capacity (LC) of the NDDS were as high as 94% ± 1.26 and 57% ± 3.5, respectively. XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of the prepared formulation. FESEM revealed nanorods with an average diameter of 50–70 ± 12 nm. FTIR confirmed the Fe-O-Ti-CS linkages as well as the successful encapsulation of CIP into the NDDS. The zeta potential (ZP) of the NDDS was determined as 85.26 ± 0.12 mV. The antimicrobial potential of the NDDS was elicited by prominent ZIs against MDR E. coli (33 ± 1.40 mm) at the low MIC of 0.112 μg/mL. Morphological alterations (e.g., deformed shape and structural damages) of MDR pathogens were clearly visible overtime by FESEM after treatment with the NDDS at MIC value, which led to the cytolysis ultimately. FACS analysis confirmed late apoptotic of the MDR E. coli (80.85%) after 6 h incubation of the NDDS at MIC (p < 0.05 compared to untreated MDR E. coli used as negative control). The highest drug release (89% ± 0.57) was observed after 8 h using PBS medium at pH 7.4. The viability of bovine mammary gland epithelial cells (BMGE) treated with the NDDS remained superior to 90%, indicating a negligible cytotoxicity (p < 0.05). In the rabbit model, in which infection was caused by injecting MDR E. coli intraperitoneally (IP), no colonies were detected after 72 h of treatment. Importantly, the histopathological analysis showed no changes in the vital rabbit organs in the treated group compared to the untreated group. Conclusions: Taken together, the newly prepared CIP-Ag/TiO2/Fe2O3/CS nanoformulation appears safe, biocompatible, and therapeutically active to fight MDR E. coli strains-causing mastitis.

Treatment of pandrug resistant (PDR) Escherichia coli strain is the leading causative agent of bovine mastitis worldwide. Hence, becoming a potential threat to veterinary and public health. Therefore, to control the infection new nontoxic, biocompatible antimicrobial formulation with enhanced antibacterial activity is massively required. Current study was planned to synthesize chitosan coated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (CS-NPs coated TiO2). Coating was being done by chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) using ionic gelation method. Aqueous solution of Moringa concanensis leaf extract was used to synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). The synthesized nanoformulations were characterized by using XRD, SEM, and FTIR. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the crystalline phase of TiO2 NPs and CS-NPs coated TiO2 NPs. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed spherical shaped nanoparticles size of chitosan NPs ranging from 19–25 nm and TiO2 NPs 35–50 nm. Thesize of CS-NPs coated TiO2 NPs was in the range of 65–75 nm. The UV-Vis Spectra and band gap values illustrated the red shift in CS-NPs coated TiO2 NPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the linkages between TiO2 NPs and chitosan biopolymer, Zeta potential confirmed the stability of CS-NPs coated TiO2 NPs by showing 95 mV peak value. In-vitro antibacterial activity of CS-NPs coated TiO2 NPs and Uncoated TiO2 NPs was evaluated by disc diffusion method against PDR strain of E. coli isolated from mastitic milk samples. The antibacterial activity of all the synthesized nanoformulations were noted and highest antibacterial activity was shown by CS-NPs coated TiO2-NPs against pandrug resistant (PDR) E. coli strain with the prominent zone of inhibition of 23 mm. Morphological changes of E. coli cells after the treatment with MIC concentration (0.78 μg/ml) of CS-NPs coated TiO2 NPs were studied by transmission electron microscopy TEM showedrigorous morphological defectand has distorted the general appearance of the E. coli cells. Cytotoxicity (HepG2 cell line) and hemolytic (human blood) studies confirmed nontoxic/biocompatible nature of CS-NPs coated biologically synthesized TiO2 NPs. The results suggested that biologically synthesized and surface modified TiO2 NPs by mucoadhesive polysaccharides (e.g. chitosan) coating would be an effective and non-toxic alternative therapeutic agent to be used in livestock industry to control drug resistant veterinary pathogens.

Environmental concerns due to excessive use of synthetic or petroleum-based materials have encouraged scientists to develop novel, sustainable, and multifunctional material using abundant lignocellulosic biomass. In this work, a study was conducted on the isolation of cellulose from wheat straw using two different methods: acidified sodium chlorite and alkaline hydrogen peroxide. A comparative study was carried out based on the yield and properties of extracted cellulose. The final product (after treatments) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) for the identification of properties. Both the treatments isolated pure white color cellulose. However, the yield of cellulose isolated through acidified sodium chlorite treatment (81.4%) was higher than alkaline hydrogen peroxide treatment (79%). Moreover, no huge difference was observed in the crystallinity and thermal properties of extracted cellulose.

The design of actively efficient and low-toxicity formulations against virulent bacterial strains causing skin infections remains a challenging task. The aim of the present study was to develop and evaluate in vitro a hydrogel impregnated with a known plant extract for topical applications against major skin bacteria. A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/gelatin hydrogel, namely HG, was prepared by esterification following the solution casting method. The gelling process was realized by cross-linking the synthetic polymer PVA and the biopolymer gelatin in the presence of hydrochloric acid (HCl). A crude extract of Nigella sativa seeds was then encapsulated in HG, and the resulting HGE was characterized morphologically (by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)), structurally (by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy), behaviorally (by swelling behavior), and biologically (by the agar well diffusion method). The results of HGE were compared to HG and HG impregnated with 10% acetic acid (HGAA). SEM sections of HGE revealed a dense and porous surface, suggesting a good hydrophilicity. X-ray diffractograms indicated that HGE and HG had a similar degree of crystallinity. FTIR spectra confirmed that esterification occurred between PVA and gelatin suggesting that the amine group is involved in the intercalation of the plant extract components in HG. Further, HGE was found to be as wettable and swellable as HG, suggesting a good biocompatibility. Eventually, HGE exerted a pronounced inhibitory effect against two major skin pathogens, the Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, suggesting a good extract release. Taken together, the experimental data indicated that HGE might be a promising wound dressing.

The rise in energy requirements and its shortfall in developing countries have affected socioeconomic life. Communities in remote mountainous regions in Asia are among the most affected by energy deprivation. This study presents the feasibility of an alternate strategy of supplying clean energy to the areas consisting of pristine mountains and forest terrain. Southeast Asia has a much-diversified landscape and varied natural resources, including abundant water resources. The current study is motivated by this abundant supply of streams which provides an excellent environment for run-of-river micro vertical axis water turbines. However, to limit the scope of the study, the rivers and streams flowing in northern areas of Pakistan are taken as the reference. The study proposes a comprehensive answer for supplying low-cost sustainable energy solutions for such remote communities. The suggested solution consists of a preliminary hydrodynamic design using Qblade, further analysis using numerical simulations, and finally, experimental testing in a real-world environment. The results of this study show that the use of microturbines is a very feasible option considering that the power generation density of the microturbine comes out to be approximately 2100 kWh/year/m2, with minimal adverse effects on the environment.

To improve the efficacy of existing classes of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin), allow dose reduction, and minimize related toxicity, this study was executed because new target-oriented livestock antimicrobials are greatly needed to battle infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. The present study aims to green synthesize a biocompatible nanohybrid of ciprofloxacin (CIP)-Ag/TiO2/chitosan (CS). Silver and titanium nanoparticles were green synthesized using Moringa concanensis leaves extract. The incorporation of silver (Ag) nanoparticles onto the surface of titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) was done by the wet chemical impregnation method, while the encapsulation of chitosan (CS) around Ag/TiO2 conjugated with ciprofloxacin (CIP) was done by the ionic gelation method. The synthesized nanohybrid (CIP-Ag/TiO2/CS) was characterized using standard techniques. The antibacterial potential, killing kinetics, cytotoxicity, drug release profile, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were determined. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed spherical agglomerated nanoparticles (NPs) of Ag/TiO2 with particle sizes of 47–75 nm, and those of the CIP-Ag/TiO2/CS nanohybrid were in range of 20–80 nm. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) patterns of the hetero system transmitted diffraction peaks of anatase phase of TiO2 and centered cubic metallic Ag crystals. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the Ti-O-Ag linkage in the nanohybrid. The zeta potential of CIP-Ag/TiO2/CS nanohybrid was found (67.45 ± 1.8 mV), suggesting stable nanodispersion. The MIC of CIP-Ag/TiO2/CS was 0.0512 μg/mL, which is much lower than the reference value recorded by the global CLSI system (Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute). The CIP-Ag/TiO2/CS nanohybrid was found to be effective against mastitis causing MDR E. coli; killing kinetics showed an excellent reduction of E. coli cells at 6 h of treatment. Flow cytometry further confirmed antibacterial potential by computing 67.87% late apoptosis feature at 6 h of treatment; antibiotic release kinetic revealed a sustained release of CIP. FESEM and TEM confirmed the structural damages in MDR E. coli (multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli). The CIP-Ag/TiO2/CS nanohybrid was found to be biocompatible, as more than 93.08% of bovine mammary gland epithelial cells remained viable. The results provide the biological backing for the development of nanohybrid antibiotics at a lower MIC value to treat infectious diseases of cattle and improve the efficacy of existing classes of antibiotics by conjugation with nanoparticles.

Amongst serious biotic factors deteriorating crop yield, the most destructive pathogen of rice is Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), which causes bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease. This study involved targeted use of biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to control BLB in order to cope with the disadvantages of chemical disease control. AgNPs were biologically synthesized from natively isolated Bacillus cereus strain SZT1, which was identified through 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Synthesis of AgNPs in bacterial culture supernatant was confirmed through UV-VIS spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that the existence of AgNPs was stabilized with proteins and alcoholic groups. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data revealed the crystalline nature and imaging with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showing the spherical shape of AgNPs with particle sizes ranging from 18 to 39 nm. The silver presence in AgNPs was further confirmed by energy dispersive spectra. Biogenic AgNPs showed substantial antibacterial activity (24.21 ± 1.01 mm) for Xoo. In a pot experiment, AgNPs were found to be effective weapons for BLB by significantly increasing the plant biomass with a decreased cellular concentration of reactive oxygen species and increased concentration of antioxidant enzyme activity.

The present work is focused on preparation, characterization, and antibacterial activity evaluation of graphene oxide/polyethersulfone mixed matrix filtration membranes. Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized via improved Hummer’s method and characterized by XRD, FTIR, and SEM. FT-IR spectra showed the presence of carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups on GO nanosheets. Different concentrations of the synthesized GO at 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 wt. % were incorporated in polyethersulfone (PES) matrix via phase inversion method to fabricate GO-PES membranes. Increasing porosity and formation of wider, finger-like channels were observed with increased GO concentrations relative to pristine membranes as evident from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of the fabricated membranes. However, membranes prepared with 1 wt. % GO appear to contain aggregation and narrowing of pore morphology. GO-incorporated membranes demonstrated enhanced flux, water-retaining capacities, and wettability as compared to pristine PES membranes. Shake flask and colony counting methods were employed to carry out antibacterial testing of synthesized GO and fabricated GO-PES membranes against Salmonella typhi (S. typhi)—a gram-negative bacteria present in water that is known as causative agent of typhoid. Synthesized GO showed significant reduction up to 70.8% in S. typhi cell count. In the case of fabricated membranes, variable concentrations of GO are observed to significantly influence the percentage viability of S. typhi, with reduction percentages observed at 41, 60, and 69% for 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 wt. % GO-incorporated membranes relative to 17% in the case of pristine PES membranes. The results indicate a good potential for applying GO/PES composite membranes for water filtration application.

Graphite was exfoliated to graphene by tip sonic using sodium cholate as a surfactant in the presence of Millipore water as a medium. The use of water as a solvent for exfoliation purposes is very important due to its environ‐ mentally friendly nature and almost no cost, contrary to organic media. Two different concentration ratios of surfactants are used in the present work. As a result, graphene dispersions with two different concentrations of 5 mg/ml and about 7 mg/ml respectively were obtained in aqueous media. It was observed that the optimum concen‐ tration of surfactant has an effective role in the exfoliation of graphite to graphene. Concentrations of graphene dispersions were studied through UV spectroscopy, while Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to study the quality of the exfoliated graphene flakes.
